Review Smith And Daughters - Fitzroy

Loved the menu, its really refreshing to see items that are good for your gut. The mushroom taco and the chicken Bao was really good but the salad and the noodles were a let down. Noodles were too oily Good vibe Would come here again

Fantastic place, wanted to go to a veg/vegan restaurant to expand our horizons, and for a dear friend that is vegan. The service staff were funny and friendly, many yummy things to try, stand out was the mushroom taco, it was hard choosing something to eat. Grabbed dessert next door, made our own sundae, they warmed up the brownie and we got a scoop of biscoff ice cream on top, perfect way to end the night. You’ll always find paid parking on the street, best part about the area.

First of all I probably need to say I think I’ve been coming here for about 20 years. How is that even possible?? As per the last several years when ever I eat here which isn’t frequent at all I always get the burrito. It was delicious and very filling surprisingly. But from memory that always happens. My friend and I were out for lunch for both of our birthdays. Jewelz My friend has lots of food requirements. She was pretty excited to be able to order a gluten-free dairy free vegan barbecue ‘chicken’ pizza. It was a really good size and looked delicious. We’ve had a full day of sightseeing in our home city Melbourne So we were hungry. We had my puppy with me so we sat out the front but it was sunny and they had nice umbrellas up. The waiter was extremely friendly with a cool accent and just the right amount of flirtatious chatter. We also had the berry smoothie and it was the most delicious drink I’ve had this year. The toilets were small but clean and tidy as always. I love that this place is in its original location and still serving up the goods, I just wish I could’ve fitted in one of those deserts. Next time! Veggie bar please don’t go anywhere you’re like a warm big hug for me after the last few years here in Melbourne. Thank you!

Great place! We loved how many options they offer, with a wide variety of styles. Most dishes are well balanced and nutritious and the desserts are amazing. All vegan!

Got there early so we are still able to get a table without waiting in a long queue. Vegie Bar has always been very well known and good however 3 out of 5 dishes we ordered this afternoon do not seem to be up to the Vegie Bar standard. Vietnamese Noodle Salad, the noodle is not cooked and no extra Nuoc Nam sauce is given on the side. Mee Goreng with peanut sauce? Yaki Udon seems like the wrong type of udon is used.

Cheeseburger pizza on a gluten free base - the yummiest pizza I've had in a while! The mushroom tacos are our fave staple when we are here. Love the people too. Super friendly.

Amazing Vegan selection, clean and nice atmosphere. Very professional and attentive staff. Highly recommended the Korean Tofu Burger! (I added Sriracha to give a little bit more of a kick!)

You can never go wrong with a visit here. Even after so many years, Vegie bar is still producing insanely delicious food. The only thing I didn’t like - the coconut yogurt next to the burrito and the service (which was not friendly in anyway as it was almost like we were offending the waiter my friend was asking questions to).

I'd been waiting for this day for a long time. Wanted to take someone who would appreciate this place as much as I did. Hungover af we got there a little late for our 1015 brunch booking and the waitress seated us straight away, no drama. The food was epic, like "sex in your mouth" as my friend said. Ordered strong coffees (best I've had in a while), the spag fritata, breakfast pizza (so much love) and mushroom & ricotta. The staff were super friendly, always topping up our waters and food was delivered quickly. Next level effort guys!!! Will be back for sure!!

I want to say i loved this place, the food was amazing dont get me wrong. But i went there for the first time to celebrate my friends birthday and we were all treated with no respect, i asked if the cake was stored in the fridge and the waitress hesitated and then brought it out half melted with no knife (we brought our own cake they just had to fridge it) then i asked for a knife please and the waitress said “yeah!! Hang on ok!!” I was shocked with how blunt she was. We were all their for my friends birthday to have a good time and we didnt feel welcome at all My plate still had food on it and it was taken away from me as i was still eating which was odd. This place could be amazing if the staff were my friendly. I have worked in hospitality for 5years i do know how hard it can be but your getting paid to be nice!

Such an amazing place and very attentive and friendly staff! The food was beyond anything I've ever had it was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented! Definitely recommend especially the chocolate tart which was out of this world!

What I love about this place is that the staff are so attentive and friendly. There is a great vibe to Smith & Daughters - buzzing energy, amazing cocktails, delicious food. What I also love about this establishment is that it is owned by two incredibly talented women. One of whom (Moe), my girlfriend and I had the privilege of meeting. She is incredibly humble and quite obviously a boss ass b*tch (in the best way possible, of course). Thank you for a great evening !

Hands down the best restaurant I’ve ever been to! Amazing service, delicious vegan food! Everyone is so lovely. Highly recommend going here

Not being a vegan and have been such to some very poor tasting food in other vegan restaurants this was amazing lots a flavour and a great space. Just needs some sound deadening it was abit loud.

Delicious food, great friendly staff and a really good vibe. We were really impressed with this place. A must visit if you haven't already.

I recommend S&D without any hesitation. Love the food (& I am not vegan or vego). Staff and service were welcoming, friendly & warm. Felt like a regular coming home from he moment I walked in.

The new menu completely exceeded all expectations, it is on par with the best Italian i was eating prior to becoming vegan - for those of you who may remember cafe bedda. So many amazing dishes to choose from so we went with the ‘feed me’ keen to try the carrots, broccoli and the tiramisu was non negotiable. We were not disappointed and were blown away by the ragu and polenta. Cocktails also on point. Meal was great, service was spot on, thank you for delivering the goods on my birthday. We will be back soon - seriously could not love you guys any more xo

The first began restaurant I went to in Fitzroy years ago and it is still one of my faves. Hard to get into as it is often fully booked so plan ahead. <br/>The food is great, vegan and incredibly tasty.

We had an excellent vegan Saturday brunch here. We ordered the pizza and meatball sub and both were great!
Prashun Thipaiah
Incredibly mediocre. We waited an hour and twenty minutes for our food as the waitress forgot our order. Mistakes happen and we weren't too bothered with it as we were looking forward to the food. The portions were ridiculous for the price we paid and the food wasn't that tasty either.

Dined here a few months ago with a party of 10 which meant we were at the mercy of a set menu which is never my ideal dining experience. Much to my surprise the food and service was excellent, the quality and quantity of food was excellent with the eggplant being a highlight. The service was excellent and will be heading back for sure.
Zomatoaddict
One of the best vegan restaurants/bars in Melbourne! I think they change the menu quite often so you may not get the second chance to try the same dishes! It’s busy so book in advance if you can, a bit slow in service!
SouthEastEater
Smith and Daughters is in a historic bluestone piece of Fitzroy history, said to be the oldest pub in the neighbourhood,<br/><br/>Food: very clever tasty vegan / vegetarian menu. <br/><br/>Service: 5/5 excellent
Melbourne Lifestyle Blog
A girlie night out, it’s Saturday and a group of us long-term friends are sitting at this buzzing vegan eatery like we’re out of Sex and the City. Only it’s not the early 2000 with tutu fashion and flat hair. It’s 2019 and vegan food is fast becoming a thing. The first time I went to Smith and Daughters, I loved it. I loved the strong flavours, I loved the rich mushroom dish, I loved that it was vegan. I had not been here for years. The mushrooms of my memories are no longer on the menu, and instead is a full suite of Italian yumminess.
Yeah Nah Ok Alright
Best restaurant in Melbourne.
Liv
What a disappointment! I really don't understand how this place has such high ratings. I am a self proclaimed foodie who has eaten at quite a lot of restaurants in Melbourne and I'd have to say this was the worst food I have ever eaten. Tiny portions for the price and the flavours were not pleasant. We ordered the chickpea with polenta which was extremely salty. The brocollini dish had a weird fishy taste which as a meat eater even I couldn't stand. The eggplant ''main'' was horribly sweet and could've been passed off as a dessert. We left the entire plate and barely touched it. The ''main'' meatball pasta was ridiculously small, passable in taste but no where near worth the exorbitant price.
Madeline
The food wasn’t amazing enough to justify the high prices & pretentious portions. The entree’s were supposed to be shared but were very small. Also, one of the mains was a pasta dish which was only entree sized and didn’t contain much. It was eaten and cleared up so quickly that a waitress asked if she had even received the meal. The other main was an eggplant dish which was delicious but very spicy and required some rice or something to balance things out. None of us were full after this food. We didn’t order dessert as we were worried we would have the same issues. I am honestly not sure why this place is so popular when there are so many better value great tasting vegan restaurants to choose from these days in Melbourne. Perhaps it is a matter of knowing what to order.

Good food:)

AMAZING! What a bloody gem. These guys have nailed the vegan feast. I've been here four times and absolutely never disappointed. I had the best Bomb Alaska dessert I've ever had and the eggplant pasta was so melt in your mouth I honestly didn't want to share.<br/><br/>If you're skeptical, I get it but you won't be disappointed, we took a few skeptics and even they came out raving. Cute af date night, great friend catch up spot. Drinks menu is delightful.

This place lived up to its reputation - I'll definitely be back!<br/>My friend and I shared an eggplant dish and a pasta + meatball dish and they were both delicious.<br/>The staff were nice and it was a fun but chill atmosphere.<br/>Will be back to try the rest of the menu 😊

Everything about this place is wonderful.<br/><br/>They are absolutely on top of their game for everything they are going for.<br/><br/>Badass wholesome vegan food showing everyone the future of food.<br/><br/>Very heavy female floor team, would be good to see some diversity there but even the floor carried the style the place was going for with precision.<br/><br/>Will be visiting again soon for sure
CJ Helena
I have been to a fair share of vegan restaurants, but this one made first place - on the bad list.<br/>The price you're paying for the amount of food you're getting is ridicoulous, unless you choose the Feast menu, which STARTS at $55 per head. If this is the only option of getting a decent meal in this restaurant, I'm not paying for it. If you have cashiolas to spend, go ahead, but for the average punter this is way too expensive. I've been around to other vegan places that have banquets, BANQUETS, for only half that price, and food that has been more impressive.<br/>When you go to a Restaurant paying that kind of money, you expect it to be mind blowing, or at least mouth watering or have some sort of uniqueness to it. I did not experience that.<br/>Servings are small, we thought the mains were entrés. And for $25 for a main that doesn't make me full, I'm not happy. We all left hungry and unimpressed.
Whalesfoodadventure
Very friendly and happy staff. Garlic bread needed abit more “butter” as it was lacking abit of flavour. Loved the beef ragu pasta, tastes just like beef. Great flavours and texture. The eggplant was the best dish. Cooked to perfection and heaps of flavour
Arosha Fernando
Im not a vegan... and was skeptical... but i was very wrong.<br/><br/>The vegan garlic bread was actually very nice... freshly baked and super hot.<br/><br/>For mains we had the meetballs and the beef ragu... both dishes were seriously good... i didnt miss the meat at all... and i could have it a few times a week with no issues.<br/><br/>Desert... very generous servings... tiramisu and the quince crumble... both were absolutely delicious... but the crumble was quite heavy... food coma...<br/><br/>Service was very good...Setting was ok.... would like more light but i guess thats the trend now.....<br/><br/>Make a reservation well ahead... we dined on a saturday it was packed! and i doubt we would have gotten a table had we just walked in.<br/><br/>Price.... not particularly cheap... but we had a pretty good meal 1x entree... 2 mains... 2 desserts... 2 glasses of wine... all came to a bit over a $100... id say its fairly reasonable.<br/><br/>Will be returning for another meal....<br/><br/>

Small portion sizes that are very over priced. My friend had a pasta dish that you could barely call entree sized which was purely the handful of spaghetti and a some white sauce for $25. Suffice to say flavour wise the food was either bland or incredibly over salted. The place is packed so clearly they are doing something right but unfortunately nothing that came to our table was enjoyable let alone worth the price tag.

Knock out food. Every dish was delicious although a couple of dishes were overly salty. We had a table of six and shared about half the dishes on the menu between us. The evening would have been perfect except the music is SO loud! We had to shout at each other and keep switching seats so we could hear each other as needed to yell into each other’s ears to be heard. After twenty minutes and rapidly developing hoarse throats we asked if they could please turn the music down. We were told “No, the owner likes it this way.” By the time we left, although we all loved the food it was a relief to get away from the noise. My dinner companions said it was so unpleasant sitting through all that noise that they’d never go back. I urge the owners to open another restaurant with softer music for people who don’t like screaming to be heard. I’d love to go back as the food was so good, but I’ll wait for warm weather so we can sit outside, away from the noise. Please Smith & Daughters, think about your poor customers going deaf! It must be hard to work there. Great food though.

Great vegan feast here at Smith & Daughters.<br/><br/>I loved the rock & roll vibes & the bar display inside was great! All of the photos on the wall, including the eat vegan sign, were also great. <br/><br/>Out of the three dishes I shared with my friend, I enjoyed the ragu the most especially because the non-meat meat tasted so much like actual meat! The the pasta dish was nice but the meat balls were a bit too soft for my liking. The panzerotti were nice and crispy, had great flavour but pretty small.<br/><br/>The service was alright but nothing amazing. It took us a while to get our orders taken but once we ordered the food came in good time.

Clever and creative choice of vegan ingredients to remarkably mimic conventional animal-based foods. We had the "feast-me" option at $55pp, excluding desert, and did not leave hungry. Missed top score for two things: 1. too much salt across most dishes (and we like salt), 2. inattentive service (repeated requests for water, drinks mistake, setting prepared for 3 rather than 4 as booked in advance). It's a tad expensive, although rents on Brunswick St must be high. The pasta dishes are a little dull, but the melon and "prosciutto" was delicious. Updated menu pics attached.

Great dinner for three last night! Highly recommend the ragu or schnitzel. Service times are slightly odd as share plates are brought out one at a time, rather than all to share. Have always loved Smith & Daughters and will continue to dine here!

I pre booked on a Saturday night at 5:15pm. I had the Ragu & polenta and my wife had the vodka red sauce meatballs with calamaratta pasta. The meatballs and pasta were amazing, well balanced sauce, pasta cooked to perfection. Another amazing dish in the Ragu, the fake meat I really enjoyed and the flavors were unique. On the down side portions were small, although an increase of about %25 should fix it. I would also ask the chef to increase the amount of veggies in the dish as both dishes lacked bulk. Maybe add a couple more mains to the dinner menu. The staff were quick to react when we walked in and sat us down immediately. They poured water straight away and ask if we wanted drinks. I put away the menus after a couple of minutes but still had to ask the nearest waitress to order, which is fine. Meals came out within 10 mins. Ambience was moderate and the music wasn’t too loud. I had read reviews about it being in a pub environment, but it wasn’t like that at all. Pretty Please add more veggies to the meals it’s cheap and they fill you up. I would go back again to try the other dishes for sure.

We came late and they were kind enough to still hold the table for us - the start of something good! We ordered the panzerotti which had amazing pastry and crunch. Next was the melon and prosciutto panzanella which had such beautiful flavours. My favourites however were the pasta - the cacio e pepe (sharp pepper and garlic flavours wrapped up in a buttery fragrance) and the meatballs in vodka red sauce are definitely definitely worth a try!!
OliviaMelbFood
We were blown away by the incredibly delicious vegan menu. We wrote to our friends about our experience afterwards it was that good!!! We have plans to go back and bring friends.
Judene Messi
It was a tad busy when my friend and I rocked up. The food was abit bland for our liking and there wasn’t much selection on the menu. The cold spaghetti dish (can’t remember the name) was what I ordered and it was really crumbly and dry. The one thing I did like was their mocha ☕️
Serena Cheung
The food tasted so amazing and imitated non vegan food perfectly! We had a bit of a wait for the food but the restaurant gave us a complimentary dish for the wait. Would definitely recommend the cacio e pepe and the fried calamari!

I’d like to point out that I am not vegan or vegetarian; I do like my meat every now and then!<br/>In my opinion this restaurant is overrated. When I read the menu I was so excited, everything sounded amazing and I wish the dishes were made with the real and original ingredients. I gave it a go and ordered the spaghettini and the braised beef. The spaghettini were quite nice, although way too salty and the portion was not generous. The braised beef smelled amazing but I didn’t enjoy the texture of the faux meat and the polenta was not enough. <br/>The restaurant was very busy which makes me believe vegans really enjoy the food here. I guess this place gives vegans a great variety of dishes and something a bit different from the usual vegan options you find at traditional restaurants. <br/>I’m glad I tried it, but as a meat eater I will not go back.

BOOK IN ADVANCE!!! Smith & Daughters is the pinnacle of Vegan dining and lots of people know it! Great entry to the Vegan world if you're going with omnivores.<br/><br/>We haven't been hear enough being that each time we come they give us so many reasons to be back the next night.<br/><br/>The Italian menu is astonishingly amazing! I hope that the next menu can live up to the brilliance of this menu.<br/><br/>Mock meat that is too crazily similar to the real thing that'll even have the most avid meat eaters questioning the validity of the plant they're eating.<br/><br/>Could not recommend this place more.
Lesley Luo
A popular vegetarian place with the nice local vibe in Fitzroy. We got Parma Potato/Smokey Eggplant/Warm Potato Salad. Recommend: Parma Potato (like the crispy outside and Napoli).<br/>Also ordered the virgin sherbet mocktail, which is good.
Anna Banana
So delicious -- I ordered the ragu and polenta and it was one of the best meals I've ever had. Such a great restaurant for vegans and non-vegans alike. Wonderful!
Carmel
Well, I knew this might be good, based on the reviews, but this place took vegan food to a new level! I went with two friends who aren’t vegan. We ordered the potato salad, the ragu with polenta, the spaghetti with peas and ricotta, and the schnitzel. Everything was absolutely delicious. Our waitress was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. She gave us some great recommendations. I don’t normally eat dessert, but we went ahead and ordered the tiramisu and cannoli. The tiramisu tasted exactly like the real thing (I think- its been so long!). I urge anyone, vegan or not, to visit this place! Now I need the cookbook, as I cannot go on without eating this food again. Can’t wait to visit here with my husband!!
S
Loved it when it was Mexican. Still love it now it’s Italian. Also hats off to the staff. Very friendly, never overbearing, very attentive and knowledgeable
Prachi Tyagi
A cute place in Fitzroy, this is heaven for vegans. I had a sound milk hot chocolate which was yum! Definitely check it out if you're into trying new dishes with interesting ingredients.
Kelly Belly
Prepare to have your mind blown. It’s not just that these vegan dishes taste and feel so similar to their meaty counterparts, it’s the fact that, importantly, each dish is delicious in its own right. There wasn’t a meal we sampled here that disappointed with the ragu, parma potato and orange pudding (with a cream that was better than, well, cream) all stand out dishes. Chef Shannon Martinez is making serious shapes here.

For a restaurant that features so frequently and positively in the food media you might expect it to be one of Melbourne's best and really something special. Instead, the place I visited is easily one of the worst I've ever been to. Arriving at 7:44pm for a 7:45pm booking we were told our table wasn't ready. So we sat outside to wait. We were actually almost forced out there by the volume of the music and yelling patrons overcoming the din of hard surfaces and hard rock music. When the waitress returned and said our table was ready we asked if we could stay outside so we could have a conversation over dinner, but needed to check with our friend who was 2 minutes away. She said she would need to give our (booked) table away, but we asked if she could wait 2 minutes to confirm with our friend. Exactly 2 minutes later our friend arrived and wanted to eat inside. We went in. Our table had been given away. What?<br/><br/>We were assigned a new waitress and she found us another. We ordered quickly, screaming at each other over the noise to make the decision. The food came quickly (the one positive of the night). My partner and I had schnitzel and caesar salad. All of it was a good variation on the meat eaters versions, but so, so salty, unneccesarily so. Then my friend's spaghetti arrived. See the photo. About 20 thick strands in a creamy peppery sauce. For $25. Nothing else on the plate. We all questioned the waitress and she said it has some really expensive pepper in it. What? Hand ground and gold plated? It was like a really bad joke. So my friend asked for some bread to go with it and the waitress said she'd have to clear it with her manager!!! 5 minutes later a small slice of dried toast hit the table next to her without a word. Atrocious. That bit of toast made it onto our bill too with a $2 discount showing that we'd been generously provided with it for free. Yes, that petty. That waitress never returned to us either. <br/><br/>Before we'd finished, another (different) staff member stopped to refill our water. I bellowed politely for the bill please. She said 'sure' and started to clean up our plates while one member at the table was still eating. Did anyone here go to hospitality school?<br/><br/>We put the money out asap (no split bills and no credit cards either as they'll hit you with a surcharge) and left, our ears ringing and our expectations shattered after an entire 45 minutes and $86 in hell. What an utterly horrendous experience. I'll get my vegan meals in great places like Yong Green Food and Finas2 down the road next time and have a wonderful experience without the attitude and the wallet gouging. <br/><br/>Don't believe the media hype. It's solely an example of an extremely good marketing and publicity machine at work.<br/><br/>

My favourite dish of the night was the ragu and polenta - I haven’t eaten meat in 25 years but geez did that beef taste legit, it was scary but good.

The staff and service, THE FOOD, the drinks, the motive - love it all!! Showed my family full of carnivores that vegan is delicious. Definitely try the tofu scramble and the pizza! And the doughnuts... all of it!
Wraith_kabab
I was with my friend and she said that she would stop being my friend if I didn't find her a good place to eat that was vegan and Italian and had a rustic feel just like her nonnas in Rome. She was serious cause she don't see Janet anymore and Janet used to be best friends with my friend all because she said that pizza huts deep pan was better than dominos thin base. I know, right.<br/><br/>So anyways I went to the restaurant with her and we shared some vegan meatballs which I could tell weren't real cause the waiter said they weren't and I said oh?<br/>I had the schnitzel and it was good, She had some pasta dish that looked good and it was.<br/>Anyways she is still my friend and jannete is not my her friend or her friend.<br/>Thanks smith and daughters for saving my marriage of friendship.<br/>

My all time favourite restaurant. The music is always great, the food is PHENOMENAL and the service is always amazing. I've eaten there when it was there old spanish menu and now their italian menu and both equally blow my mind.  This is where I take all my meat eating friends to show them how good vegan food can be. 20/10

If I knew in advance it was a vegan restaurant I would have kept walking. The thought of eating Vegan has always scared me for some reason! Fortunately I didn’t! There seemed to be an awesome vibe from outside which got us in. Took a seat at the bar and the staff were incredibly friendly and willing to educate on the menu. Ordered the ‘meat balls’, gnocchi and a pumpkin dish encrusted in bread crumbs. In short every dish was amazing. All dishes were amazing and very satisfying, even for a habitual meat eater like me! The limoncello rice pudding was frickin awesome, and there were also a good selection of Victorian beers. Really cool venue and every dish is a talking point. Will be back!!
Claire
I came here on Thursday night (26th) with my friend and our starter of garlic bread took almost half an hour to come out and only when we requested it. We waited almost one hour for our food and had to ask twice for it’s whereabouts, and the staff did not come back to give us an update on our food. One of the guys working clearly heard and saw us with our hands raised and saying excuse me but still ignored us not just once but multiple times. I get it was busy but he could at least acknowledge us and say “i won’t be a moment” instead of ignoring us when we were in plain sight. That’s disgustingly rude. I got the baked eggplant dish and I have no doubt that it was microwaved because theres no way food can get that hot without it being microwaved, it was steaming and I couldn’t physically eat it until it cooled down a bit. My friend got the braised beef and her mash was like jelly. We won’t be coming back, it was an overall bad experience. I suggest you train your staff in customer service and being more receptive as opposed to ignoring us when they’re right next to us, and if someone asks to check up on their food, to update them. “Bad customer service” wouldn’t even justify this experience, we felt like we didn’t even exist to them! I don’t expect perfect service because as a waitress in Crown I know how stressful it can be to work in a restaurant of high customer capacity, but at least to be acknowledged as customers and given the respect.
Sanyk28
My friend and I ordered gnocchi and cacio e pepe. We both barely feel eaten. <br/><br/>For the spaghetti, we can literally count the number of unexpectedly-dense strands on the plate, and there is nothing else on the plate. It is not a finished dish. It is not a balanced dish either - overpowering of pepper. <br/><br/>To be fair, the gnocchi was reasonable, small quantity but tasty. <br/><br/>Slow serving of food - 20-30mins wait after order. <br/><br/>Also, this is a solely vegan restaurant but the tags in the website include vegetarian. It is confusing for people who are looking for vegetarian but not vegan. <br/><br/>It was also confusing when I saw many meat items (without quotation mark) in the menu. It’s hypocritical.
Virgil
I'm not a vegan but I loved the menu! Loved the ambience and the service was exceptional. Super chilled and loved the vibe. Had brunch here and had the mushroom and ricotta cheese on sourdough toast (which was my favourite!), spaghetti frittata, meatball sub and potato skins. Coffee was good. It was all so tasty! Definitely coming back!
SK
I really wanted to visit Smith and Daughters, but the menu on their website has got to be the most annoying and pretentious menu I've ever read. Take the silver spoon out. I honestly don't want to visit anymore because it genuinely sounds like they would snob people off. <br/>Now before I go on, I don't have any allergies whatsoever. I can thankfully eat absolutely everything and don't substitute often either.<br/>However the first thing you read is "your allergy is your responsibility" <br/>Then "you're eating Italian food, onion and garlic are prevalent" <br/>Then "we suffer when you dissect perfection" <br/>Then "use the ATM across the street or transfer using NetBank, it's the future!" <br/>Wow. Just wow.
Sebastien
The baked cauliflower is to die for!! <br/><br/>A great atmosphere for dinner and drinks with friends; not too loud.<br/><br/>Be sure to book in advance as this is a popular spot

Whether you are a vegan or not this place is a great restaurant. They have great food rich with flavour and thoughtfulness. I am not a vegan but I had a really lovely meal. There is an Italian menu on at the moment and it is creative and delicious. The staff are great and the service is solid. It is a good meal out. I was impressed and happy I went.
Le_orange
This place was alright. Some dishes exceptional (meatballs & ragu) and some where very unappetising (paella and eggplant). Very hit and miss. Service was super friendly, but we had to continue calling for it. Would I return? Nah. Tick and flick.

I've been wanting to come to Smith and Daughters for a while now so I'm glad I have finally done so. I was keen to try the new Italian menu and also to see what the "meat" options were like. Our table had the Feast Me option because there was more than 8 of us and I could not believe how many dishes came out. They have done a great job in ensuring that a range of their dishes were included and then were happy for us to take the leftovers home. They were also very accommodating for food intolerances.<br/><br/>My favourite dish was the beef ragu, mainly because I was amazed at how similar the texture of it was to real beef and also to find out that it is made from mushroom. So delicious!<br/><br/>The staff were attentive and friendly, which made our overall experience great. I am definitely planning to return. Even the hardcore meat eaters enjoyed the food and said they would also go back! I can't wait to try the desserts, unfortunately I was too full this time to venture there but I will get my second stomach ready next time.
Halo
LOVE the new menu! We got the 'feast me' and boyyyy it was good. We got to try a variety of schnitzels, meatballs, garlic bread, pasta and tiramisu and more! The staff were really friendly and were really attentive throughout the night. It's so awesome to see a busy restaurant serving 100% vegan food to the general public and showing that you can get alternatives to the food you love without the cruelty!
Dan Stevens
Me and my family went here for my birthday and chose the "feast me" option, where the waiter brings out a selection of foods to share tapas style until you have had enough.<br/><br/>Unfortunately I left hungry and disappointed, which I didn't expect for $40 per head. We were each served one croquette, one roasted leek, and a roasted pepper. Then to share a plate of corn chips with guac, bowl of green beans and a cold mushroom salad. Some nice flavours but it was mostly underwhelming.<br/><br/>Not filling, not satisfied. Most expensive vegetables I've ever paid for.

Went with a table of thirteen and even the meat eaters were blown away! The food is amazing and those that were gluten free were catered to with great diligence!<br/>I dislike the taste of red meat and I don’t know how they do it but the ragu has same texture as meat but thankfully for me a beautiful flavour!<br/>Thoroughly recommend only gripe being they struggled to keep the dishes flowing for such a large table.

Came here on a Saturday night with some friends for a few cocktails and a nice dinner. I’m usually somebody who looks up restaurants before arrival, out of curiosity, but it was a last minute decision and I really didn’t have time. Upon arrival, I looked at the menu and realised it was plant based dining. Oh dear. Now I’m not one who is against vegetarian/vegan food, in fact, I love it (although I do love my meat too) but on intending to have a few cocktails I was certainly hoping that there were some substantial options to keep the alcohol at bay. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was share plates, which I love when you’re out with friends and my favourite dish was the pickled mushrooms with smoked tofu. Their cocktail list was also amazing, I think between 3 of us, we tried nearly every one on the menu! Service wasn’t bad, although, the staff were quite abrupt and didn’t really seem happy to be there. All in all though, definitely somewhere to take your vegan friends!

Have wanted to come here for forever - was even gifted the S&D cookbook for Christmas. Don’t know why it took so long for me to get here, but I did for my birthday recently and dayum it was amazing. Food is definitely unique and I imagine a lot of experimenting went into getting those dishes so perfect. Between bae and I, we ordered four dishes because we were both so hungry, and managed to demolish it all and then follow it with dessert. Absolutely fantastic experience, and what made it even better was getting to see the staff sit down for a big staff dinner close to closing - that definitely screamed “family” and it’s always good to know staff are well looked after. <br/>Now I just need S&D to open up a restaurant Southside! 👏
Veganaut
Tried the new Italian menu, nice and creamy. A little pricey but if you want vegan Italian check it out. Just wish there were fewer communal tables especially at the price paid.

If this is the first time that you are hearing a boat Smith and Daughters… Where have you been? If you have been following me for a little while, you will know that Mr B has been following a vegan diet. Smith and Daughters was one of the first places he went for breakfast and this was rather daunting to me as I have only tried a few places that have been completely vegan.

Had the Guacamole, Tamales, Chilli Rellenos, Tacos and of course their famous Cauliflower Con Queso. Loved everything but our favourites were definitely the Chilli Rellenos and Cauliflower Queso. Staff were super friendly and attentive and even advised us that we may have ordered too much initially, which reinforced their philosophy of minimal waste- which I thought was amazing to see in practice. <br/>Will definitely come back to try their other dishes!

Came here last week for brunch and ordered the mushrooms dish and an almond latte. The mushrooms were delicious, they were super creamy and flavoursome! Can’t believe it’s vegan! Coffee was good too.

I had been wanting to try this place out for a long time as I had heard great feedback amongst the vegetarian community.<br/>I came here with a group of friends for my birthday and we ordered the feed me option so that we could try everything! <br/>Unfortunately I was not impressed at all by the array of menu items that came out. There was plenty of food, however I found none of the dishes that delicious or tasty, if anything I found the flavor combos and textures a bit strange and in satisfying.<br/>I was particularly disappointed by the kimchi taco which I was excited to try, the flavor combo was weird and not pleasant, something we all agreed upon around the table. <br/>So despite having a great ambience, I personally found the food disappointing which was sad as I’m always keen to promote vegetarian/vegan dining options! <br/>

Well, I learnt something about myself today. I learnt that I am a fat bastard first and only a meatatarian second. We strolled down Brunswick Street looking for a place I had in mind to check out but it turned out to be closed and suddenly, I found myself in front of Smith and Daughters with Paola quickly losing interest in this whole "I know we had brunch not long ago but since we are here, why not have dinner before we head home!". So fearing she’d pull the plug on the whole plan I panicked and figured “Oh well, might as well have some vegan food” (rather than having to figure out what to eat at home knowing we had a pretty empty fridge).<br/><br/>And so in we went... to eat vegan... not vegetarian, vegan. And after all the teasing I've done...<br/><br/>Anyway, so, I'm not gonna lie. This place was delicious! Everything we had was very good, though an extreme highlight would have to be the roasted cauliflower, by far. The croquettes were delicious and crunchy and the salad was very nice (though I wished they had topped, tailed and de-stringed the snow peas). We also had a blood sausage dish and though (obviously) the beetroot-based faux boudin noir tasted nothing like the real thing, it was actually extremely tasty and very delicious. Texture was awesome too.<br/><br/>Has this changed my mind about considering veganism? Hell to the no! Sorry Morrissey. But being a meat lover as I am, I just could not help but think that it'd all be just that much better with a side of slow-roasted lamb or something... It all tasted like superb "side-dishes" to something else that never arrived.<br/><br/>But I am, after all, a big protein lover. And yet I had, undeniably, a very delicious meal that I can recommend. To anyone. Would I come here regularly? Probably not. Would I be here like weekly if I was a vegan? Probably yes!<br/><br/>It is all sort of Latin inspired so there was plenty of flavour packed on every dish we tried, and hot sauces for you to abuse on your own.<br/><br/>We also had a Piña Colada (it was meant to be a virgin one but we were served -and charged- for the rum version and so we had no choice but to indulge) and the Jalapeño Margarita. Both drinks were delicious too. All in all, vegan or not, highly recommended.

The food here is delicious! Came with a group of six for a meal and will definitely return. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The service in regards to food was a little slow, however this could also be because I was very hungry when I arrived. As for the food itself, it’s a tapas style restaurant! I would definitely recommend sharing with friends (not because the portion sizes are small, they were a really good size for the price!) so you can fully experience the menu, as there are so many great dishes on offer. My personal favourite was the croquettes, they blew my mind with how good they were! Also the mushroom and whipped tofu dish we ordered was delicious! Will definitely come back here again. <br/>

I loved their menu when I visited 2 years back, the recipes were so full of innovation, went a couple times after that, but the menu is becoming more safe and what would be mock meat, so Ive given up.....

We were in a group of 7, and whilst only one of us was vegetarian, we all agreed at the end of the meal that we would happily come back. This vegan restaurant has a Spanish tapas style menu and we opted for the Feast Me, which included: guacamole (pretty good), croquettas (nice), tortilla (my fav dish), tacos (very interesting and we couldn't work out what was in it although it tasted nice), cauliflower (my least fav dish), and possibly one or two other mains but there was so much food that I can't remember them all. We had two desserts but were so full by this stage, we had to take most of it away. The food comes out fast and there is a lot of it!

Amazing vegan dishes!!<br/>Not a vegan myself, meatlover actually. But came with my vegan friend and smith and daughters did not disappoint! You can still enjoy food and they presented it really well.<br/>Started off with the garlic bread, just like a bruschetta but more puréed and the bread was amazing! Not dry or tough.<br/>Then had the croquettes which turned out really well with the aioli sauce provided. <br/>The guacamole dip was great to share. The tortilla chips were fresh and crunchy.<br/>We had to get the cauliflower. Turned out perfect, also a great dish to share. <br/>We tried their European hot chocolate hazelnut and mint choc, both go really well with either almond milk or soy milk :) <br/>Our tacos were forgotten :( but it’ll definitely be on our next order for our next visit.<br/>Take your lover, friends and family here, even your vegan and non-vegan friends :)
Mo
Ate here and had a good time. Ordered several dishes to share among 6. Most were tasty though none of us liked the “prawn” tacos. Also the pacing of the food was very drawn out with one dish at a time to share among the group. It took ages to eat the whole meal and was harder to fill up our tums.
The Gluten-Free Foodie
Really great food and good service. We were impressed with how quickly the meals came out and presentation was awesome.<br/>80s tunes and ambience wouldn’t suit just anyone and pub noisiness wouldn’t be great for a first date or time to catch up with the ‘rents. <br/>Carnivore father was impressed with the food so need I say more.
Melbourne To Mouth
Celebrated Vegan establishment Smith & Daughters was high on my list of ‘must try’ places for ages when I decided to go vegan for a while. Stoked to find out they take bookings too. Great cocktails and service, my favorite thing on their menu was the Guacamole which had the perfect amount of spice. Their croquettes were good too. The Palm heart tacos were a divisive item at our table with some interesting flavour combos! I’d definitely go back to try more of their very intriguing menu.

Before I start, the deduction of 0.5 was due to the acoustics.  It was loud, not that it'the venues fault, but it made our evening slightly less pleasurable.  We dined like kings - everything vegetarian and you wouldn't know it.  It's a case of food cooked well, that just doesn't happen to contain meat.  Service was mega friendly, and they even brought out a slice of cake for my daughter's birthday (which we were celebrating).   Speaking of kids, they also note items on the menu that contain chili, so the 3 amigos ate well (her, and her american cousins).  Thankyou S&D
Vegetarian Food Lover
Smith and Daughters is very busy so I highly recommend booking or turning up at open time for a table. Ordered smoky tasty croquettes, tortilla (would be better if it was served warm & softer), mushroom salad & amazing nutty baked cauliflower. Service was friendly & fast. Well deserved top vegetarian restaurant in Melbourne.

Food was delicious - a really hearty brunch brimming with flavour. Staff greeting was grumpy and my food was bashed down in front of me without a word plus no one checked in on me whilst I was eating or anytime after. I would go again for the food but the service and attitude is a shame and a bit of a put off.
HotChipy
The first time I went to Smith & Daughters I was a little underwhelmed, I thought it was a little bland but my second visit certainly did not disappoint. <br/><br/>The tortilla was INCREDIBLE so eggy & delicious, the tomato heirloom salad was just to die for, the ricotta cheese was...well I have no words. I can’t believe it’s VEGAN & so incredibly delicious.

Good surprise, seasonal and fresh food, look good, taste good, service very pleasant, <br/>We took <br/>Picked mushrooms and cumcumber as starter <br/> refreshing, colorfull<br/>Followed by some tacos,<br/> Perfect!!<br/>A cauliflower con queso<br/> cooking was right, crispy outside and tender inside<br/>And some raspberry doughnuts<br/> Killed it!!!<br/>Liked this place and the vegan dishes <br/><br/><br/>
Daniel Rubin
Over rated, bland menu. Just because it’s a vegan place doesn’t mean it has to fake meat with flavoured tofu for each single dish. There are far more imaginative vegan options there, is really just a bar with over priced cocktails that markets itself as some trendy original vegan place. Very disappointing.

Loved it!!! My partner and I were so wowed by the array of realistic dishes at this restaurant! Being a vegan, my partner doesn't often get to eat creamy or overly cheesy dishes and you guys did such a great job of blowing our minds with the bomb desserts and amazing Cheesy Eggplant Bake. Totally worth trying out if in Melbourne. Lovely staff also!

The chocolate butter that comes with the almond Turron bun (basically a scroll) was delicious and should be sold in a jar so I could use it on toast at home. It had a mousse texture and is what dreams are made of.<br/>The tofu scramble is creamyyyyy.<br/>I really miss the American dinner menu: the shrimp po boy, the gravy and cheese chips, the calamari salad (the calamari tasted and had the same texture as actual calamari!) and the amazing cheesecake on chocolate biscuit base. Omg my mouth is watering thinking about it.<br/>On the regular menu I love the garlic prawns and the tortilla (even tho I prefer it hot not room temp). <br/>Oh and a past menu item: the mushroom pate!! Omg this is so good ! Unfortunately I'll have to make it from their cookbook if I'm to eat it again.<br/>And always, the service is top notch.

Wow! I came here for my birthday dinner and really didn't expect it to be so good! I'm vegetarian, not vegan, but was blown away by how realistic all the dishes were. This is an amazing restaurant aside from the fact that it's vegan. The Spanish flavours are authentic and so much love was in each dish. My Elderflower Sour Cocktail was amazing! We had the Salt Cod Fritters, Padron Peppers, Spanish Hot Chips, Seafood Stew, Cheesy Eggplant Bake and Brussel Sprouts with Smokey Bacon. All the dishes were fantastic and you really do have to second guess that there is no meat, seafood, eggs or dairy in anything. They were kind enough to put a candle and sparkler in my Crema Catalana (also incredible) for desert! Will definitely be back!
Veggin' Around
Been wanting to go here for so long and managed to snag a table on a Sunday for brunch. Firstly, it's been a while since I've been able to go somewhere and eat everything on the menu, so I love what they are doing here! I went for the Spicy Sausage and Beans dish and my friend went for the Mushrooms. I didn't mind the food but it was lacking the excitement that I expected, whether that's my fault for building it up in my head or the actual food is another question. The service was friendly but a couple of things went a little awry. I asked for an orange juice that never came and my friend was sold a gluten free dessert that the waitress got her excited about and then they didn't have any. Again, not really their fault but kinda disappointing. All-in-all I really liked the layout inside and the the dining experience was not too bad, just not quite the level that I thought it would be!
Merry Rourou
I've been there during the week end, it's a noisy place (didn't really suit a date), the food had a lot of mock meat and was a little bit to salty for me but it's a fully vegan place so yayy guys!
Kristina
Every time I have come to Smith and Daughters my stomachs grown a centremetre fatter, I swear! I try something new every time I come here and I always feel as though I have ordered the best things on the menu! I cant belive food can be this delish! The decor is beautiful and the staff are friendly enough.

Never been ignored so many times by wait staff. Also super rude over the phone when trying to book for a Saturday night. Food was OK but not good enough to justify the tiresome experience.

We hadn't been here for years and came for a birthday but we were let down by the food. The lentil dish is exactly as everyone was saying, the only flavour you can taste on it is lemon/or vinegar. We mixed it with the Russian salad (potato salad) which made it more tasty. We also had the artichoke hearts, Brussels sprouts and garlic mushrooms. Everything we had (other than the lentils) felt very simple like one flavour profile, there was no depth or anything special to it. The cocktails were amazing, the delicate pear was a favourite. The wine was lacklustre though. The pinot gris and the tempranillo were very average. A lot of the wine menu is from Spain which I can understand the intention behind but usually with imported wine you're paying for the transportation rather than the quality. Service was great and they gave us a table to wait for another table while we had some drinks. Overall not super keen on coming back anytime soon. I feel like if this many reviews say the lentils have an overwhelming taste of lemon/vinegar perhaps they should rethink the dish entirely.

Had their Tortilla, Creamy Garlic Mushrooms and Cheesy Eggplant Bake. The Tortilla was rustic yet flavoursome and went very well with the garlic aioli and lemon. It was probably my favourite dish even though it was the simplest to execute. The Creamy Garlic Mushrooms was slightly disappointing as it was lacking in depth of flavours and it was just too creamy and hence, oily. I was expecting it to be more garlicky and flavourful. The Cheesy Eggplant Bake was appealing, with the crispy layer of cheese on top encompassing the creamy cheesy interior. The eggplant was noteworthy as I loved how the chunks of eggplants were cooked until soft and smooth, while keeping its shape and without becoming a mash. It was great being able to see the chunks of eggplants within the baked dish even though I would personally prefer it to contain stronger cheese flavours.

I am no vegan but the food was absolutely amazing! This place is definitely for those who make fun of vegan food because I can guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised. Cool vibes and the staff were 5 stars. Definitely coming back when I'm back in Melbourne.

One of my favourite places on Brunswick st, it's a great place to bring friends who might not be so sure about vegan food. The food is always well flavoured and diverse and I appreciate the creative meat substitutes
Eatdrinkbe_merry
Dined here with a vegan friend on a busy Friday night, who after so many oohs, aahs and cries of sheer delight whilst reading the menu made me wonder what has she been eating for the past year! Great, fun, rock and roll vibe which was like being back in Brunswick St in a previous era. Three of us started at the communal table in the centre of the room but was a little cramped and not perfect for conversation. Managed to be moved after the first course was served so really enjoyed spreading out and more comfort. All dishes were warming and tasty such as fried artichoke w quince aioli, creamy garlic mushrooms, Spanish hot chips, cheesy eggplant bake and an orange and fennel radicchio salad. I think the highlight of dining here is somewhat lost on the omnivore but for a vegan who has not had anything like cheese or cream for a long time..... the cheesy eggplant bake would be a relief and potentially a very powerful moment! Didn't try any of the meat sounding dishes like the blood sausage empanada (plant based) because quite frankly, I wouldn't choose to eat normal blood sausage. For dessert we chose to share a panna cotta which was fine but not a super standout dish. For my vegan friend she was shrieking with "it's amazing; the best ever!" Would have preferred to have seen more salads and fresh produce on the menu, rather than fried, cheesy and creamy!

After hearing some good things about this place I expected to be blown away. Unfortunately, it was the complete opposite. Was seated fast enough, but took a while to get my order taken, but that doesn't bother me as it was a Saturday afternoon and the place was relatively quiet no one was in a rush. What bothered me was ordering a $17 sandwich, expecting something worthwhile and receiving something that looked like it was left over from last week and slapped on a plate. I paid $17 for two soggy pieces of bread with 3 small strips of roasted capsicum and 2 pieces of vegan chorizo, I felt like a sucker. So much hype for rubbish, don't waste your time, go and visit one of the hundreds of other small businesses in Melbourne who actually care and put some love into what they are dishing out.

Incredible food, drinks, and dessert. Great vibe and friendly staff - absolute treat. Only criticism from my partner was some prawns in the seafood stew were a bit tough. Favorites were the brussel sprouts and artichokes.
Erin Morrissy
Horrible, horrible food. Dark vibe through the whole place, maybe some people like that but it felt really dark and heavy there. The staff were quite rude and unfriendly. My partner saw a staff member take the trash out and come back and just start serving customers and handling glasses and drinks without washing her hands. We ordered the lentil dish and the whole thing reeked and tasted of just vinegar. Yes, the dish has a vinegar dressing, but what we were given was drenched in it. I tasted it and it was revolting! It was not an attractive dish either. When I took it back, the owner was very hard to deal with, saying she couldn't take it back because I had "eaten it" (I had literally taken a tiny taste and gagged.) We were just going to leave but after the owner's insistence decided to give them another shot at wow-ing us. We ordered the chickpea soup. It came out looking like a small bowl of slop and tasted like something I've had at camp- you know, the kind of camp food you make when you need to feel lots of people with ingredients from cans and leftovers. There was no flavour and it was just not worth the price. It was like they just threw left overs together to make the dish. <br/>The overall experience was unenjoyable and I will not be going back to this dark dungeon again. Poor service, rude staff, rude owner and horrible food for high prices. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

The service is always amazing - Mo knows the regulars and even remembers their favourites. She was born for hospitality as she clearly is passionate about the customer experience and making people feel welcome. The winter menu features the most incredibly delicious spicy chickpea and pepper soup which bursts on life changing. The hot toddy is also worth traveling miles for - warming, delicious. The aioli is literally good on or with everything and is the sole reason I bought the recipe book. This place is a treasure offering the best of everything, a true Melbourne foodie find. I love you Smith and Daughters!
Emilyjane
We had a group of 10 eat here for dinner and had the banquet dinner which is mixture of everything on the menu and it was delicious! We all left with happy and incredibly full tummies. My favourites were the creamy mushrooms and the cheesy eggplant bake. The two desserts we got were the churros and the Creme caramel and they were the stand outs for the night. Highly recommend this place for not only vegans but everyone! :))
Ellie
The Salt Cod fritters... Oh my god. Love this new menu so much more, hopefully get to try the American menu one day though!<br/>And missing the paella fritters, if those or paella as a meal would be brought back would be a godsend!
Affogato Addiction
Excellent menu, rich tasty options. Highly recommend the salt cod fritters and eggplant bake. Crema catalana is a silken tofu sort of custard, would have preferred a creamier texture to it but was nice. <br/>Very dim venue, book ahead for groups, the menu works well for sharing.<br/>Cute small bathrooms, to get to them you get to spy some of the kitchen. Bathroom rating 7/10.

Oh so delicious food & wine; especially the baked eggplant and cheese and the SA Pinot Noir 😍 Wonderfully attentive, friendly service & warm atmosphere!

Normally this is a average place, but terrible experience with the staff and Tracey extremely rude.<br/>The lentil dish like eating vinegar, staff said do you want us to replace this. Of course to anyone else but them, it would mean you wouldn't be charged for the dish, but it was on the bill.<br/>Even the other dishes weren't worth the money.<br/><br/>Met with attitude when we questioned it, we let it go as they clearly just care about the money not costumers. <br/>There are so many great vegan/vegetarian places like The Alley and loving hut.<br/>so don't compromise, go somewhere better.
Lee Phoenix
Was amazed at how delicious the food is here and the staff is lovely. This is my go too for people who are wanting to try vegan food for the first time. They are left amazed by how beautiful and tasty the food is. Xx
