Review Ichi Ni Nana - Fitzroy

Binx Jetajobe
We had amazing dinner today at Ichi ni Nana. This is out first time here and we enjoyed the food so much. I love the ambience too. With an open area at the back. We will definitely come back and try the other items in the menu.

We had the set menu that was offered. This place does amazing food. Each dish had a unique flavour that provided an adventure in your tastebuds. There was a lot of food for a set menu. I would highly recommend this place and would love to try their other dishes!

Neither the best, nor the worst. The service is good, the vibe is cool but the food is meh. The best dish I had was the karaage chicken. The skewers were overcooked and a bit on the chewy side. The sashimi was average and so was the agedashi tofu. Okay if you're looking for a spot to grab a few drinks as well, but I won't be rushing back.

-If you are one of those instagramers who just cares about looks and not the taste of the food, this is the perfect place. -Food quality was a hit and miss. -Most definitely should drop the name Izakaya if you are going to be serving skewers that either come slightly pink or extremely dry and overcooked. Had the ichi ni maki roll to start off with, is ok for overall quality but definitely not worth $30, salmon was definitely over seared/cooked to what im use to. Presentation is what you would expect a higher end resturant to showcase. Next i had the slow cooked beef curry. This was a decent meal but nothing that couldnt be done easily done at home minus the slow cooked beef. The slow cooked beef was definitely was what kept the dish to it's high asking price. The curry was abit watery to my liking. (Roughly 15% too watery) Next came one of the worst parts to the night The yakitori set. Standard yakitori execpt Two sticks stood out (forgot their name) One chicken thigh was pink And the mince chicken balls were really dry and overcooked... Seemed like something a gym rat would cook to fullfill their protein needs. Seriously if you are going to call yourself an izakaya atleast have good skewers. The first gojo platter came out... Nothing overly special and the quality of fish was not upto standard. Especially when Hinoki Pantry sells a platter (or you can pick and choose from them) to give you a much higher standard of sushi and sashimi for a fraction of the price. Actually most platters in a decent restaurant elsewhere is either the same quality but 2-4 times cheaper. The only highlight was the scallops today were great. Desserts - Chocolate Harumaki - nutella filled spring rolls with vanilla ice cream on the side... So couldnt go wrong -Matcha creme brulee- if they call this a cremee brulee, than they must think a hard boiled egg is considered a runny egg. Their creme brulee was mushy and had a bad grainyish texture... The crack that you expect on a creme brulee was hardly their. Portion is large so that could be a pro... But due to how overcooked and uncreme brulee like it was... It was definitely a con. The rest of the food can be pretty much summed up as overpriced, hit or miss.

Ichi Ni Nana was recommended to us and we were excited to check it out. We were seated upstairs that overlooked the city skyline - it was beautiful. They had a very extensive menu and the options were enderless. The food was a hit & miss - Scallops prepared 5 ways: we love the option of trying the different flavours in this one dish - Okonomiyaki - Soft shell crab Maki - Ichi ni Maki - Chicken ribs - it was ok - Large beef curry - portion size was huge! - +8 Wagyu steak - this was a disappointment, it came out last and was very dry. Not worth $55 Overall, the service was great, definitely a social place for a larger group as it does get quite loud. If I had to I would go back again and try more of their maki rolls and possibly the desserts.

I know this place gets quite pricey but oh my god! Come here with 4 friends and go hard on ordering the seared salmon! I do have to say I’ve never drank a cider so good in my life on the way the served it. It went down and really just hit all the spots on how perfect it was. Will be coming back with a bigger group for sure!! 😍

Nice presentation of the food but nothing special in terms of taste. I expected so much more for the ratings and the price list of this restaurant. The Ebi Mayo was disgustingly soaked in mayonese, the rest of the food was nothing that you wouldn't find at a Japanese shop at a shopping center food court. The experience felt greatly disappointing, not just for the unexpectedly average tasting food, but because the service felt rushed. We ordered the banquet menu and within 20min since we ordered we were served 80% of the dishes included in the banquet. They didn't wait for us to finish with one when they were bringing the next one and so on. It felt like they were trying to kick us out fast. I always appreciate a fast service but this was way too rushed. Waiters were around us all the time either checking any half empty dishes to take them away or serving water or bringing the next food. I had to tell them a couple of times not to take the plates away because we were still working on those. The rushed service together with the loud ambience in the terrace and the constant interruption from waiters completely prevented us from having a pleasant conversation and relaxed dining experience. I will not come back here.

Atmosphere was great, food tasted awesome. However serving sizes could be bigger for the price though. Ordered: tuna tataki, scallops, salmon ichi taco, curry, chashu pork

Insta: melbfoodie_mark
YT: MelbFoodieMark
** Check them out for more food reviews in Melbourne!
-
A popular Japanese restaurant in Fiztroy - one of my friend's favourites so we decided to visit. As soon as you enter, you will be amazed by its beautiful courtyard and decos which completes this mysterious funky vibe. We ended up ordering Chef's Selection Plate that came with assorted nigiri and sashimi. Overall, it was good - food was decent and presentation was overwhelmingly beautiful. However, I did get the impression that they focused more on the presentation of their dishes than actual foods. The presentation in deed was excellent and did make it more enjoyable to dine but considering how it was a $100 platter, I expected more in terms of quality and taste. If you are looking for a proper sushi dining experience, I wouldn't recommend this place. But if you are hoping to drink and dine with your mates at a cool funky venue, I can't think of anywhere else other than Ichi Ni Nana Izakaya.

Takeaway menu too limited. Dumplings were good, rice dishes boring, fish had no flavour and tasted way too fishy. Not worth a repeat visit for these dishes.

We were made to sit in the basement which was suffocating. It was my birthday and I was looking forward to some nice dining, the food was average but the desert was good. I think the staff could have helped us with ordering the food but nothing worked out for us so big no no for next time.

From the food to the service to the ambiance, this restaurants rating is well deserved.
The food is flawlessly photogenic adding to the fine dining experience.
While the menu is pricey, this can be easily overlooked by the immaculate quality of the food and the drinks.
LittleMushroom
I went there end of 2019. Very pricy with disappointing food. Food is not special, quite average for the price. And it took a loooooong time to serve. We had to get the last 2 dishes as takeaway eventually and ate them at home later.

Best way to experience this place is by ordering every entree dish and trying everything! Actually can not fault this place, so delicious
We wanted a Japanese experience since our trip to Japan was cancelled due to COVID. The food was delicious, our favourites were the Chicken Kaaraage and Wagyu Ribs (OMG SO YUM) , sushi & gyozas were delicious . A bit pricey but totally worth it for a special night out.
Anna Shannon
Had the chefs banquet here last night! The food was very tasty, I will definately be back. The sliced scotch fillet in the ginger & soy was to die for! Amazing Gyozas, sashimi & lobster sushi roll 😍 overall the food & atmosphere was great!
FoodieQueen21
The dishes I had were so incredible! I admit they are a bit pricey but honestly they are worth the price for such quality taste. I can’t pick one as a favorite, I honestly love them all 😝
•
I went here with my friend, so next time i’ll be back and take my bf here, he’ll love it too 😍
Momojojo
The ambient and music are awesome - like it a lot! But to be honest, the food is overpriced, for sashimi and sushi in particular. Salmon and tuna are very bland. The pork belly is good.
Ennis
Their confit sucks puff is always my favorite. The duck is soft and the pastry is crispy.
Also love their lamb. Tender and juicy. The sauce is sweet with sesame.

If you’re feeling like Japanese in Fitzroy. This is the place to go!

Cool decor and an active vibe with everyone in there.
Service is served with a smile and is fast.

Not somewhere to go if you like a quiet dinner as it gets loud. I noticed booths there for groups which looked good.

Will be coming here again!

My aunt visited from New York, you know that city where the coolest of the cool make it first, and we catch on to food trends a decade later. So where in Melbourne could I take her for dinner? It had to be healthy, it had to be fun, it had to be open late on a Tuesday evening. Ichi Ni Nana is part of a three story enterprise (Village People above, and Upside on the rooftop). It definitely has the cool factor – dim lighting, clean but with quirky Japanese inspired décor, so much to choose from that my aunt spent almost 20 minutes picking what to order…

Ordered the banquet for 4. All the food was amazing, however there was not enough of it. Ordered more dishes on top of that. This was a massive let down. I’d expect that after a banquet I would be very full. Sashimi was good but not mind blowing. Karage chicken was yum and so were the ribs. So tender. Another point of disappointment was that the food came out way too quickly. We didn’t even get a chance to savour the flavours before another dish came out. It was a lovely meal but for the price point you expect more food. We were still hungry when we left and spent nearly $450.

From booking to dessert, the whole experience was flawless. The atmosphere alone is worth the 5 stars. Food was good, nothing we haven't had before. But the whole package is something worth going for. Had a small group dinner there and was quite busy so bear that in mind. Otherwise, very impressive overall!

Ichi Ni Nana Izakaya

Was distracted from taking photos of the rest of the meals.

Sashmi Platter (Large), Wagyu Sliders, Soft Shell Crab Roll, Nama Kaki (Oysters) and Oriental Sour (Cocktail).

Everything was simply amazing as usual. Ichi Ni Nana has always been a welcoming treat, from the food to the drinks, highly recommended visit for diners and date nights.

There’s not much to say about the place, the service was great, the food was amazing, just don’t forget to put lemons on the oysters and come prepared, book in advance!

@ichininanaizakaya #food #foodporn #japanese #sashimi #oysters #wagyu #softshellcrab #melbourne #foodblogger

We have wanted to go to Ichi Ni Nana Izakaya for a little while now, so when the weather cleared up we decided to head here to try out a well received and recommended sushi restaurant.

As we entered, we were greeted by enthusiastic Japanese chefs which brought some warmth- and whilst some staff didn't reciprocate this sentiment as much, we were still served promptly and respectfully throughout our meal. Today we ordered the pork belly, soft shell crab and salmon rolls (chef prepared). The pork belly was a little dry, however had an amazing sauce that we would drink in a cup if we could HAHA. The soft shell crab is definitely higher quality than most; good texture and taste, whilst the salmon rolls were gorgeous. Very high grade salmon with a wonderful sauce, tasting very delicious. One of the better sushi rolls we have had.

An overall good restaurant experience hosting some very good quality sushi. Whilst price is a little on the pointy end, you pay for the experience and quality of sushi.

Food: 4/5
Service: 3/5
Ambience: 5/5
Value: 3.5/5

Overall: 4/5

Ordered salmon and chicken donburis for dinner. Dry, lacking in flavour and hardly anything in it besides rice. So disappointing for $20-$22. Won’t be back.

Came here on date night, great atmosphere and music. Booked a table and was seated quickly. Slow to get service, then the waitress forgot to place our orders and then even after being made aware of mistakes forgot to order the food and drinks again. Ended up taking 1 hour for sake to arrive, and over an hour for gyoza. The saving grace was the food- absolutely amazing chicken gyoza and Nasu dengaku. Will come back another day once I’ve gotten over the poor service.

Pros: the place and interior looks amazing, really nice vibes. The duck pastries were something else! The meat filling was generous and paired amazingly with the hoisin sauce. Tempura vegetables were great with the ginger soy sauce. Skewers were seasoned well.

Cons: the lamb chops were a bit too sweet to liking. Tempura vegetables were a bit too oily. Sushi was average.

3.5

Food: I went here with my sisters and we got the sake yakitori, pork baos and the Ichi Ni Nana platter. The salmon yakitori was pretty average. It had a nice salmony flavour and was cooked nicely but nothing out of the ordinary. The pork baos were really delicious! They were flavourful, the pork was marinated perfectly and the pickle and chilli in the bao gave it the extra flavour that stood out. The highlight would obviously be the platter. The presentation made the food look extra appetizing (just in case you didn't realise, the dry ice is only there for decoration. Do not eat it! 😂). The best part about this platter was the variety of sashimi it had on it. It had about 6 or 7 different fishes, some of which I had never had before. The sushi was really nice, but I didn't like that it was all made with brown rice and there was no option for white rice. I thought that the brown rice made the texture of the sushi a bit dryer and rougher as it didn't have the same texture as normal sushi rice, therefore I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually would. If I went back again, I would just get the sashimi platter so I don't have to have brown rice sushi.

Service: the waiters were attentive and helpful. They mentioned the different stuff on the platter so I knew what I was eating.

Ambiance: if you're looking for a fine dining, quiet experience this is probably not the place for you as this had more of a hip and livelier crowd/atmosphere to it, especially with the bar upstairs. But still an enjoyable experience nonetheless. There was also this cable car table area that looked really cool to sit in, but since there was only one I'm assuming you have to book it in advance. If I went back there I'd definitely try and get that table.

Food was tasty and beautifully presented but the service was terribly slow. They forgot to bring us tap water to the table. Had to ask to order food 3 times and to try and locate our waiter. Everyone else on my table got served 30 minutes before me. Not worth the price

I came here on a Thursday night and wasn’t expecting it to be so busy! The vibe was really great, especially sitting in the covered courtyard section which was just stunning.

There is a really wide variety of both food and drink options to choose from, all of which are presented beautifully. Taste wise, there were definitely some stand out dishes for me, which I’ve highlighted with a * below.

We had the:
- Renkon chips // lotus root chips with shichimi salt, served with sweet potato and yuzu pepper dip
- * Ebi Mayo // battered prawns tossed in spicy Japanese mayo - this was simple but one of my favourites. The prawns were fresh and crunchy, and the dressing was creamy with a slight wasabi kick.
- Maguro Tataki // thinly sliced seared tuna with soy, yuzu and shallot dressing on shredded daikon
- * Wagyu Rib // boneless slow braised, charcoal grilled wagyu ribs with sautéed seasonal vegetables and yakiniku sauce - hands down my favourite dish of the night! The meat was so incredibly fall-apart tender!
- Wagyu Shabu Shabu Roll // inside out roll filled with prawn, asparagus, and avocado topped with thinly sliced wagyu beef and coated with sesame ponzu
- Volcano Roll // inside out roll filled with asparagus, salmon and prawn, coated in flamed spicy scallop sauce
- Green Tea & Biscuit Ichi Licks
- * Banoffee // banana and caramel pie on an Oreo base topped with mascarpone cream - I love banana desserts and this was no exception. Perfect end to the meal.

Whilst the service was friendly, it was a bit off at times. Twice there were dishes brought to our table that we didn’t order, and when we enquired about what the special flavour for the Ichi Licks was, the server didn’t know. For the price we were paying for our dinner, I would expect service to be at a slightly higher level that that. But otherwise it was a very enjoyable meal, although I have definitely had better Japanese meals in Melbourne for a lot cheaper.

Also, as a side note, for the love of god get public transport here if you have a choice! I spent a good half an hour or more pulling my hair out trying to find parking on a Thursday night. I don’t think I have ever seen so many permit zones in my entire life. Thank goodness the restaurant was very understanding and still held my booking even though I was half an hour late (I did call to let them know my situation).

Had dinner here recently, the design of the place itself its amazing, however the food we had were a bit average, and the service was not very good, the staff seem to had very little idea of the menu.

Such a pleasure to eat here with the friendly staffs and a great food!!! We had such a big meal, with 5 sushi roll, lamb miso, edamame with the chilli, sashimi plater, skewers, gyoza, pork, and desserts.
The tempura roll and the lamb miso is the mvp for the night!!! I love it so much!! The chilli from the edamame is nice as well. The price is worth for every single cent 😂😂 the sashimi is so fresh too. eventhough its not cheap, but it’s satisfying! Good ambiance as well. Love this place ❤️

Super tasty but make sure you book or at least aren't in a rush because you may be asked to wait a while for a table otherwise, definitely worth it though, great ambience/food. (=

This one is indeed better than the one on st kilda. The environment is a great plus, the food is also better than st kilda ones. Sushi is still a main part from the menu, and you can never get wrong with sushi in this place.

Food arrived at a good pace, staff were knowledgeable and attentive although did seem to try and slide in upsells as opposed to ask. The fitout is one of a kind, love it. I wasn’t blown away with any of the food that we’d ordered, I’ve had similar at cheaper prices. The sake was lovely

Quince And Cheese
Haven't had any food here, but I've been for drinks on the rooftop. Decent selection of Japanese beers but I really was there for the ambiance, which is a bright and sunny and spacious oasis from the hustle and bustle of Brunswick.

the information is wrong, we went there at Thursday lunch time. paid $4 one hour parking, then the door just never open. called to the restaurant, they told us that they don't open for lunch on Thursday. zomato is absolutely misleaded us, wasted out time and parking fee, ridiculous.

This place is amazing! The flavours in every dish just wowed us every time! Well thought out menu and prompt service. Bit pricy but you pay for what you get!!

Everything here was delicious. Nice fit out with a few booths. Food was amazing. Recommendations were the volcano roll and ebi mayo which was on point. Sashimi here is also fresh and delightful.

We loved 😍
The sashimi dishes were delicious and very fresh!
They were all beautifully presented. We ordered a few desserts to share also. The chocolate fondue really hit the spot.

We disliked 😖
Parking around the area was a nightmare! We spent 30 minutes circling around on a Saturday night.

The ambience and the staff were great and friendly. However what took me away from the overall experience were the price of the food did not match the quality of the food. I was expecting more as I dined in at ichi ichi ku and it was amazing. What I ordered here at ichi ni nana were ( soft shell crab maki, pork gyoza, angus beef set, chicken karage) soft shell crab were falling apart and that made it hard to eat. Pork gyoza wasn’t as nice as the one in ichi ichi ku as it wasn’t juicy enough. Angus beef were dry and the brown rice were dry too. Chicken karage were too sweet and way too less meat. I was quite sad as I felt like I wasted my money. Please improve the quality of the food I’m sure that will make everything better.
Lee Yue Yu
Overall the ambience is good and service is great . HOWEVER, the quality of the food despite that it’s in the Afternoon and there’s only my friend and I. The food wasn’t hot enough. I felt cheated having to pay so much with such low quality of the food. Soft shell crab Maki were falling apart makes it hard to eat, brown rice was way too dry to eat. The Angus beef set, beef was disappointing and too dry despite that it was medium rare. Chicken karage was too sweet that my friend and I got sick of it. It doesn’t worth the money at all and definitely won’t be coming back.
Came here the other night for my birthday with a group.. they put us downstairs in a booth which was nice/away from the busy area upstairs. The food was pretty yummy!! However, the service was terrible.... Took about 15-20 mins just to get our drinks served to us (not even cocktails as well just beers and wine...) Also the waiter would comment on our choices from the menu saying "no not that one, that's terrible" "that's tasteless" this was a surprise to us.... And then once served, waiter would just put the meals on the table and leave without describing to us what it was/who ordered it. This was very frustrating for a group like us that had vegetarians and vegans.. Probably would not go back.

There was something about this place that I just didn't love. The food and service were perfectly acceptable, but the vibe was just off. Too many people in one place just made it lose its X factor. It's like the Fitzroy Social - just one massive space filled with Brunswick Street types. Add to that the fact that the tables near the entrance cop a massive freezing whack every time the door opens in winter, and you've got yourself a fairly average night.
Sanny
I used to love this restaurant but I feel like it's going down hill. It was not a busy night. The wagyu beef sizzling came out literally in 4 minutes after I ordered which means they simply reheat the meat on the pan? The chicken skewer was a bit dry. Ebi mayo the prawn was soggy which means it was not freshly fried. Portion size was small as usual. Two of us ended up spending $100 and still hungry... For the price I pay I expect more delicate taste
Simmyeats.Melb
Friends of mine invited me here and I am glad they did as I must admit this place was not on my radar.

The restaurant fit out is really cool, we sat in a booth which was comfortable and gave you some privacy. A solid menu with many great options, staff very helpful and friendly.

We ordered so much food!! Haha All were very delicious but the stand outs for me were the hand rolls, in particular the dragon and ebi tempura rolls, they were just so tasty. The soft shell crab was also amazing. The ingredients on all the dishes were fresh and of good quality, presentation was outstanding.

A definite must if you are keen to try this place out, I thoroughly enjoyed the food here.
Jill
Been here numerous times, and they’ve all been great experiences. The food is delicious and the service is good. The booth seats can get a bit dark though, but I guess it adds to the ambience.

Definitely had some high expectations coming to the restaurant from friends and having read reviews online. The food was good (however quite overpriced in my opinion) but it did not matter because of the terrible service. Drinks took longer than 30 minutes to arrive, even after asking twice for the order. We were led to believe that the waiter did not actually put the drinks order through and only had when we asked for it the second time. Some meals did not take long, however, they all arrived at different times. We asked the waiter about it and turns out he had lost our docket, claimed he remembered everything on it, and only put through our order a lot later compared to when we ordered. Once we finished the first set of our meal, we proceeded to ask about two dishes that never arrived. Turns out he had forgotten those two dishes. We arrived at the venue at 745 and only got all of our meals and drinks at around 915. Absolutely would not recommend this restaurant and will not be visiting again. I am usually lenient to service staff on Saturday nights, however, this was absolutely unbelievable.

This place is the right choice for a night out with friends. The food is punchy, the vibe is bustling and it’s packed to the rafters. The food? Loads of choices, all of them well thought out and presented with pride. Our fave is the lobster rock n roll. Great drinks list too... Japanese with a Melbourne soul 🍣

We selected this place based on the reviews.
The Ambience was nice until 8.30ish, then it got quiet loud.
The food and the pricing didn't match. We had:
- fried chicken which was the only solid dish.
- tempura prawns (soggy prawns and the tempura was too oily)
- field mushroom (in the menu it shows two, we only got 1... it was a nice dish but 1 mushroom with salsa on top for $8 sounds like a lot, plus it's completely misleading to have a photo of that dish with two mushrooms that we thought we could share )
- cha shu pork kakuni. (an ok dish. nothing bad about it, nothing outstanding)
- and two more dishes which we really didn't like (one of them was supposed to be crispy tofu that was all soggy and seemed tasteless to me).

Having tried 6 or 7 dishes and only liked one, I would not go back or recommend.

I was very surprised knowing the great reviews I read before choosing this place.

Also, found the customer service very average as they did not even realised when we were ready to order or ready for the bill (which also surprised me given the reviews!)

Definately one of my favourite Japanese restaurants! This is my third time back and it never fails. The food here is delicious! My favourite is the fried chicken, sashimi and the dragon roll. Will definitely continue coming back here. I am always amazed by the fast service and friendliness of the staff.

Arrived in a group of four, and we were shown downstairs to a booth... a good start we thought. The restaurant was fairly busy but there were still some vacant tables to be seen. Our service was slow, it took far too long to order our drinks and again too long a wait for the menus to be handed to us. Oh and it was stiffling hot down stairs, a sentiment shared by other patrons that could be seen fanning themselves for a bit of relief. The food looks great, really well presented and served on lovely and interesting crockery. Serving sizes are more than adequate and we could not fault the food... but it did come out too slow and it was a constant battle to get the attention of one of the waiters. Would I go back? Not for the service, the food yes.

Excellent decor, service, food and cocktails. We ordered a range of tapas and everything was cooked and served well, with almost all plates being totally cleaned.

The nasu dengaku was so tender, I have never had eggplant that just explodes with juiciness. Yakitori were well cooked but on the smaller side, order a couple of different ones to be satisfied. I loved the pork bao and how crunchy the bao was! It had been deep fried I think so the outside had a crust but the inside was still soft and fluffy, this added a great texture to the dish.

Will be back to try the sushi.
Reiijoce
Beautiful menu.Food presentation as pictured.Service? Oh my...i think they are way over their heads with the restaurant's reputation that they can't be bothered with good service.
Would i go again? Would one pay for such food which many other Japanese restaurants can do well equally or better and with even better service?
The answer is pretty clear.

This place is awesome. Had dinner and drinks here a few weeks ago and the vibe was great. Food was fresh and delicious and the drinks were off the charts. Great place for a dinner for 2 or a large group. This is a place you take people if they want a real Melbourne vibe dinner

What a pretty, pretty, pretty venue. Can easily miss the place as their sign outside is prrtty small. Place is huge and thr courtyard is so nice. Got the dragon roll which came out well-presented. Fresh, light, with a some chilli sauce/mayo as well. The roe.. Really good! A bit on the pricey side but I enjoyed every dollar

Delicious food, great service and excellent prices. My friend and I were blown away at the value and variety of food that we could get. Thoroughly enjoyed our time and the incredible ambience. I’ll be back!

Such an incredible Japanese restaurant with a huge list of options on their menu. Great for birthdays and small catchup with a beautiful interior! I love the sashimi platter we ordered and the entrees and matcha dessert. Everything was fresh and tasted amazing with great flavours! They also take bookings online or by phone.

High quality of Japanese in Fitzroy!
Their karaage is my favourite!
Soba salad is bit weird taste for me tho but generally so good.

Highly recommend to people who loves Japanese cuisine!

Went here for my birthday and it was a really nice experience. The cocktails were delicious and the overall vibe of the restaurant was really relaxing. Initially they sat us outside which I was skeptical about because it was cold but after dark, they close the roof and it was a lot warmer.
The service was ok and the price in my opinion was a bit high hence my rating.
Great food, great people, great venue, great everything!. Servings are on the small end but quality. Just came in for a snack and beer, possibly be back if I wanted to impress someone on a date.
Service ★ ★ ★ ★
Food ★ ★ ★
Ambience ★ ★ ★ ★
The atmosphere in the store is very good, staff are friendly. They have all the traditional Japanese food in the menu, all you will see in other Japanese izakaya restaurant as well. I was look forward about maybe they have something different can surprise me...... yes, i found it, the dessert that we ordered.
First time visit with my boyfriend, the atmosphere is good, very relaxed! We ordered salmon salad and tuna tataki, the entree is okay, nothing special. But we really like the beef curry, they have fair portion of beef. The highlight is the sushi roll, we order wagyu roll and volcano roll! Impressed by the volcano roll, it tastes amazing!

3.5. Came for a weekend lunch and was seated in the lovely outdoors area of the restaurant. Had the karaage tori, soft shell crab tempura and wagyu shabu shabu roll which were ok. The volcano roll and small sashimi were delicious and the highlights of the meal. Would come back to try more of the sushi and sashimi.

Jan 2020: Came back again to try the dragon roll, pork belly and sushi sashimi platter. Again, very good food although on the expensive side. The matcha cheesecake and chocolate harumaki desserts were ok.

Highly recommended place. Food was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere was fantastic.
Would recommend the $100 sushi/sashimi platter - plenty to go around. The pork belly was also amazing, super tender and flavoursome.

3.5/5
I had dinner w some family here last night. The service was nice and friendly.

We ordered a home made sake which had a milky texture and a strawberry flavour which was nice.

We ordered a $100 sushi and sashimi platter, which was really good.

The pork gyozas were delicious, the small sushimi platter was of similar quality to the big platter of course.

The spicy edamame and plain edamame were good but teriyaki chicken skewers which were soo dry and burnt that I couldn’t eat them off the stick.

We also tried some tuna sushi and they were nice but they fell apart as I tried to get them off the plate.

Overall it was above average but I’ve eaten a lot better Japanese. The presentation however was excellent and some of the best I’ve seen. But it was the food that mattered most to me!

I used to love this place as it is different and easy to book. However the last time I went with other people I was extremely dissatisfied with the experience. The waitress we had rushed us and made us feel nervous about every order we made. We were rushed out of the restaurant even though we were bringing a large amount of money to the restaurant. When we brought this to their attention at the conclusion of our meal, we were dismissed. I will not be returning

My friends and I went here for a birthday. The atmosphere was good. At first they put us in the “cable car”, it’s quite catastrophic in there. The waiter then realised that we did make a booking and moved us to a better outdoor table. We started off with some cocktails, they were all delicious! We ordered quite a lot of food. My highlight was the volcano roll and the wagyu steak. I would probably come back as we had a very enjoyable night. Only downfall was that I felt like we were forced out as we were given our bill as soon as we finished eating.

Ordered:
- scotch fillet tataki
- small sashimi
- wagyu sliders
- pork baos
- ebi mayo (prawns)

Stand out dishes were the ebi mayo prawns and pork baos; everything else was a disappointment!

I have returned to this restaurant many times and enjoyed my visit every time. Love the cocktails. My go to dishes are the beef takaki, Ebi Mayo, tuna takaki & the chef selection sashimi platter.

Bad service. Overall very average for the price. Cocktail (Japanese monk) was nice.
Volcano roll: 4/5
Dragon roll: 3/5
Ichi platter: 2.5/5 (Not worth the price)

Cool venue with multiple levels including restaurant and rooftop bar. I found the menu a little bit limited but most offerings were appealing. Between two we shared the ma hor, the kingfish sashimi, the fried chicken, the duck bao and stir fried greens. The ma hor and the kingfish were amazing. I found that the fried chicken was a bit dry and lacked enough meat. The duck bao were tasty but fairly standard. Wine list left a little to be desired (each bottle we ordered was out of stock).

Funky Japanese restaurant with very cool seating arrangements especially in the fully enclosed courtyard! All the food is super fresh particularly the sashimi and sushi. Cocktail menu is also a plus. Will be back again

This place and the other branch of them in St kilda is one of my favourite places for Japanese food. The first 5 in Melbourne. Never disappoints! Very fresh and flavourful and the menu is quite extensive as in you get many options.

They have one of the best sashimi in town. The decor of the restaurant is cozy and bring me the feeling like Twilight. I’ll definitely come back to try more delicious dishes.
Emptystomach
Cute place for fusion Japanese dishes. Not for the purist who wants tradition sushi dishes. Brilliant cocktails and colourful and spectacular plating. Suitable for intimate dates. Again not when your date is looking for Japanese dishes the authentic way. Love the volcanic lobster rolls!
For more foodie goodness follow my ig: emptystomach

The Good:
- Great Decor & Ambience
- Fantastic Sushi
- A real cool bouncer

The Bad:
- Inattentive Staff

The Ugly:
- A volcano roll lacking the volcano

Ichi Ni Nana is a great Japanese restaurant with a few rough edges.

The beginning of the night saw me greeted by the bouncer who, like a father meeting their boyfriends daughter for the first time, quizzed me on my intentions. We shared a laugh and i proceeded to the restaurant.

The wooden decor and open court yard area provide a space that is both intimate and relaxed. The sushi bar provides an insight into the kitchen and the bar is setback far enough as to not disturb the diners with the clanking of glasses and cocktail shakers. The one thing i really appreciated about this space was its ability to diffuse the noise. Even when the restaurant was packed it is easy to maintain a conversation without having to shout.

After being seated i was immediately poured a glass of water and given a menu. After looking at it i decided that i would order a cocktail for my guest who hadn’t arrived yet. I waited, and waited, and waited for what seemed like an eternity (15 minutes) until finally i managed to catch the eye of one of the waiters who took my order. Having worked in a restaurant before i can understand that the start of a shift is often a little more chilled out but this is a great opportunity to build rapport with customers and up-sell rather than standing around the kitchen waiting for orders to be plated.

Moving onto the food and we decided we would start with the renkon chips and spicy edamame. The edamame was grouse. It was spicy without setting fire to the face and a really great start to the meal. Next the renkon chips. My God these crispy, starching gems make regular chips look like garbage. I could’ve eaten a kilo of them. The sweet potato mash that was served with them provided a great contrast between salty chip and sweet dip.

Having temporarily stifled my hangriness we moved onto some pork gyoza and the coveted volcano roll. The gyoza were ok however they seemed a little rushed. They lacked the outer crust expected when ordering a pan fried dumpling. The filling was tasty though and the spring onion chopped into the soy sauce provided a little texture to cover the lack of pan frying.

Next came the volcano roll minus the volcano. As the waiter placed the sushi in front of me i was met with immediate disappointment. They had forgotten to add the signature touch, a smoking ramekin of soy sauce. That being said the sushi was tasty. I really enjoyed the contrast between the crisp asparagus and the chewy sushi rice.

Finally we ordered mains. I had the beef curry and my partner had the yasai don. Both were very good and the servings were huge. The curry balanced spice with umami and the addition of the Japanese pickles kept me interested right until the end. The meat was a little stringy and dry however a fattier cut may have made the dish too rich. It was a small price to pay for such a tasty meal.

The yasai don was also very impressive. The copious amounts of mushrooms, tofu and zucchini made the meal filling. To my partners disdain, the savoury teriyaki sauce was too addictive and kept me coming back for more. I was scorned numerous timed for pinching a mouthful off her plate.

Overall this is one of my favourite restaurants. The food, when at its best, is a testament to why Japanese is one of the most satisfying cuisines. If the service was dialled in i have no doubt this would have been a 5 Star experience.
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:
+ Renkon Chips
+ Karaage Tori
+ Field Mushroom
+ Wagyu Steak
+ Volcano Roll

Ichi Ni Nana has a great, intimate ambience in a modern rustic space that makes you happy being there. The food was modern Japanese, with a large selection of tapas type dishes, as well as your usual rolls, sushi and sashimi and other mains. I loved the renkon chips (fried lotus chips) to start the meal. These were super crispy and matched with chunky pumpkin mash and a real delight. The Karaage tori (fried chicken) was fried crunchy, but still remains succulent and juicy inside (this one could do with a nice thick aoili sauce). We also had the salmon salad, but unfortunately this one was slightly fishy. The field mushroom was fresh, and light and gets the juices in your mouth going. The wagyu steak was super tender, and delicious. And the volcano roll was super creamy, textural and delightful. Everything was on point but serving sizes were on the small side. Prices are fine dining level also, so be prepare for that. Service was exceptional and friendly. Overall, a great dining experience and certainly one for special occasions.

We have been to Ichi Ni Nana for at least 10 times in the past 2 to 3 years. My family loves this place - the food, the service, the decor and the atmosphere. We came here for whatever reasons - family gathering, bring a friend that came from overseas, show off this place to a friend that hasn’t been, and just because we can’t think of anywhere else to eat. We usually order their signature Ichi Ni Nana platter to wow people first and then some tapas to share.

Last night my family came here again with 2 friends that came from overseas. I have to say this was the first time we felt disappointed by their food. Service and atmosphere are still great. However the food last night was a let down. We ordered that huge platter first as usual. I realized the platter’s price has gone up to $160. It was $127 two years ago then went up to $145 then now $160. We are ok with the price increase as we understand the raw material and labor cost has been increased over the years. We just hope the quality of the food would at least stay the same. However we were disappointed when it was served. The big fish head and bone are not on the plate anymore. The amount of sashimi is so much less than before. The variety of fish has reduced. The beautiful scallops has also disappeared - they were so fresh and sweet. Although the sashimi is still so fresh, it’s just not as wow as it used to be. First time no one took out their phones to take photos of the platter. As for their tapas, they are also not as good as they used to be. One of our favorite is Ebi Mayo but the flavor was just average last night. My husband said I made this dish better at home. Overall we were disappointed with all the dishes we ordered last night.

Ichi Ni Nana’s serving size is always small but now with average taste, higher price and smaller serving, we don’t think we will come back anytime soon. I hope they can bring up the quality of the food. That way we can still justify the higher price. Bring back the original Ichi Ni Nana platter please! I still rate them 4 out of 5 since the service and atmosphere are still as good and overall it’s still a good experience for people that have never been. However I would prefer to give them 3.5 due to the let down of the food but Zomato doesn’t allow.

Ichi Ni Nana Izakaya was one of the most popular Japanese restaurant located in Fitzroy. When I first walked in to the restaurant, it was dark and traditional looking. However, when you go farther, there was a spacious outdoor space with modern setting. The place was good for groups and events.

Hotate 5 Ways
Price: $27
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌝🌜
The scallops were all very tender. The different dressings bring variety to the dish, so you won’t get bored. Would definitely recommend this one.

Field Mushroom
Price: $10
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌜
Never thought mushroom could be this good! The mushroom itself was very juicy and tender. The sauce was sweet, although I wished the mango salsa flavour could be a bit stronger to balance out the sweetness. But overall a really nice dish.

Dragon Roll
Price: $27
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌜
Really liked the filling on this one! You get a generous amount of seared tuna which was delicious. The tobiko really adds a nice touch to the dish as well. Although I don’t recommend getting too much of the mayo and chilli sauce on the side, as it can be a bit overwhelming.

Volcano Roll
Price: $27
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌝🌜
The sauce on top was flavourful, but not overwhelming. I liked the filling more on the other one, but the sauce really take this dish to the next level. Definitely a must-try!

Unagi Nigiri
Price: $10
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌝
You can’t go wrong with unagi. The sweet sauce paired with tender eel was a perfect match!

Sashimi Small
Price: $39
Taste: 🌝🌝🌝🌝🌝
The platter consists of 12 pieces of sashimi. If you’re a fan of sashimi, definitely have to order this one, or even the large one. The sashimi were thick cut, so you get a good taste of everything. You can tell that they were high quality sashimi. I really enjoyed them all.

Overall, Ichi Ni Nana Izakaya did not disappoint! It lives up to the hype. I would go with more people next time because I really want to order the Ichi Ni Nana Platter, which is a selection of assorted sashimi and sushi. Would definitely come back!

Favourite place for Japanese. Such a variety of food and never disappoints. Bill can definitely add up but quality of ingredients shines through.

Ichi ni nana was a hidden and hippy Japanese Izakaya style restaurant in Fitzroy area. If you don’t look carefully, you might miss the entrance door.

The staff was very friendly and gave clear explanation of some popular dishes for us. The service was pretty fast too. There were lots of dishes to choose from included cold and warm appetisers , maki sushi, sashimi, yakitori, salad, tempura, salad, noodles , dessert etc... it was impossible to have them all, just pick the ones you like.

#Ebi mayo#-deep fried lightly battered prawns tossed in karashi (mustard) mayo. The dish was very simply, but just couldn’t resist eating them. I loved the combination of hot and tingling sensation from the mayo with crunchy and sweet from the prawn. They just matched perfectly.
#chicken Yakitori#-charcoal grilled chicken thigh skewers with yakitori sauce. There were not many choices for yakitori, but I couldn’t say no to charcoal grilled skewers, these were my favourites! The chicken was quite good with tender and juicy texture. Not amazing but good enough.
In stead of ordering traditional Agedashi tofu, we tried #Atsuage#-grilled tofu with sweet miso sauce. That was a great dish if you like tofu. It used semi-firm tofu so was slightly harder, but has more flavour and texture. The sweet miso sauce was a really great added-on to the dish.
#lamb saikyo yaki#-grilled sweet miso glazed lam cutlets. Lamb meat was not very often used in Japanese dishes. But this dish was really nice with tender lamb meat and as well as charcoal burnt fragrant.
Ichi nana was a nice cozy restaurant that not only for intimate dining experience but as could be your causal gathering place for good quality of Japanese food.
Foodie Cafe
As a customer , I love to see how the chef prepared food. Ichi ni nana has very nice ambiance! Helpful stuff to explain every dish.
Food - 3/5
Service - 4/5
Ambiance - 4/5
I really dissatisfied and disappointed when I walk pass Sushi bar and I saw the chef already pre-made some / all sushi roll. For charging me 25$ for a dragon roll...
nahhh .. not going back anymore. Doesn’t looks fresh and sauces overpower the sushi itself , it is a smart move so I can’t tell how fresh is it .
Thanks

Pretty good food but would honestly rather go elsewhere. Service was decent i guess, actually was really annoyed and disappointed. Wanted a chill and relaxed dinner with my partner and unfortunately the waitress assigned to our table ruined it for us. The food came so quick, cleared the plates and was about to clear 1 that we were not even done with, immediately handed us the bill after eating my last spoon of dessert. Couldn't even have a conversation with my partner without food in my mouth. On that note, i will not be returning.

I went here last and absolutely enjoyed the place. The staff were really attentive and provided great service. The last time I went here was possibly 1 year ago and not too sure if the seating had always been situated like the way it was however I loved it! Very cosy. Food wise - we ordered a few tapas and sushi and they were all very tasty. I would definitely come back. Couldn’t really fault the place so I gave it a 5/5! Also make sure you don’t forget the deserts !! We ordered the chocolate spring rolls with Vanilla icecream and it was BLESS.

I’m not going to lie. I would come back again. I’ve been here twice already and this place has not failed to serve aesthetically pleasing and delicious dishes. Aesthetics and vibes of this restaurant is just as amazing as the presentation of their dishes too! Defs recommend the wagyu beef. And sashimi platters if dining in a big group of people.
Eating Away Melbourne
Visited Ichi Ni Nana again last Saturday. Booked for a super early dinner and it wasn't too busy at that time, it could get quite busy and they have a 2 hour seating rule so be prepared.

Ordered beef slider, eggplant, lotus chips, prawn, and a few grilled items. Really loved the eggplant, so much flavour in the sauce and eggplant was cooked nicely. The rhubarb cocktail was super delicious so was the green tea cheesecake. Will be back!

This place is so cool, from decor, ambience to the food. Caught up with my friends over dinner on a wed night, the place is spacious but it is all packed up even though it’s week night. Food was amazing, liked the way they did their sauce especially. Beautifully seasoned with fresh produce. Highlight of the night for me was the scallops 5 ways. 5 different sauces with lightly seared scallops. Heaven!!! Dragon rolls and the mince pork fried rice were delicious too. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Love to come back another time.

We came here for lunch on a Tuesday and were seated immediately. We decided to order the tuna karaage bentos and the brown rice chirashi. I thoroughly enjoyed the chirashi and the brown rice was very well flavoured. The portions were sizable which made it worth the price. Service was friendly too.
Do They Have Cold Brew?
You need to visit. Don't plan on reading a book if you're dining alone because it's a moody dim lit place, but the food, staff, restaurant, experience: ALL INCREDIBLE! A fantastic venue that ties in nicely with the upstairs Hawkers. I want to visit again and again.

The outdoor seating area is absolutely gorgeous. The service was good, we ordered a selection of different meals which came out quickly. Everything was fresh and delicious. Well worth a visit.
