Review St Andrews Hotel - Fitzroy - Fitzroy

Gaetana Lucci
I can’t thank the staff at St Andrews Hotel enough for helping make my daughter's Christening day extra special. The Room with a View was a great space. The food was delicious. The staff were so friendly and attentive. All my guests have spoken so highly of the service and day. We really appreciate it and will highly recommend St Andrews Hotel to family and friends. Thanks again!!

I booked the private dining “Room with a View” for my daughters christening and I am so glad I did. Organising everything was so easy, staff were thorough and went through all the little details to ensure a smooth night. On the night, service was fantastic. Staff ensured every guest was well taken care of all night long, the food was lovely and there were options to suit everyone. We all left super full and happy!

We recently had our engagement lunch at St Andrews Hotel in Fitzroy in their "Room with a View". We had a fabulous day! The team were so lovely to deal with, professional, friendly and organised. The food was excellent with very generous portions. The room was a lovely size for our party of 24 with a great view on a perfect Autumn day. I would definitely recommend this space for any small-medium functions.

Was there for group Xmas lunch. Food was delicious. Generous portion size for a set menu. Staff there was very attentive and lovely. Room was beautifully decorated for xmas functions. Shout out to the two young bartenders (1 in the front room and 1 in the back room). I was looking for a cocktail not on the menu, the bartender in the back room said he couldn't but the front bar has all the ingredients and can make it for me. Front room bartender, although he didn't how to make it was willing to google and make it. Drink was spot on. The other bartender even came over to my table to check if I was able to order my drink. Cudos to both 😀. Only negative (hence 4 star and not 5 star). I found the older barman/ manager rude, unfriendly and grumpy. When i arrived was not welcoming at the door. Asked me "which group"that was it. I dismissed that, then when i went to the bar later to ask for an off menu cocktail, same demeanour. "Don't know what that is, how you make it." Didn't seem like he cared. The young bartender then chimed in and said he would look it up and make it for me. Loved the drink but didn't want to stay for drinks after that. May consider coming back just in case it was a once off. Feedback to the older man is don't make a paying customer feel unwelcome or that you couldn't care less. There are a lot of great bars and pubs around Fitzroy to choose from.

I recently celebrated my 30th Birthday at The St Andrews Hotel, Room With View. From the moment I made the booking the team at St Andrews were onto everything. On the day of my event the team were ready to help set up flowers, decorations and cake. The table was beautifully set with antipasto platters and glasses of prosecco on arrival for my guests. The service was beyond what I had imagined and everyone commented on how attentive the staff were. The food was great and there was plenty of it!!! I could not be happier with how my event went and could not recommend The St Andrews Hotel more for your next party or event. Thank you to the amazing team for helping me to create beautiful memories with my loved ones on my birthday. I can't wait to come back 😊 Ebony!

Never fails! Excellent food, impossible to select a bad vintage and service exemplary, attentive and not obtrusive. If you're wanting a fail-safe experience in a well appointed hotel overlooking a park go to St Andrew's.

I love coming here for a good steak and mash potato. The service was excellent and the fold was even better. They treat you like one of the family at this place. Highly recommend.

Went here for dinner last night and only one word - WOW. We had the Crispy pork belly and the Seafood Linguini and neither dish disappointed. The flavours were just sublime and the service - spot on, attentive without being overbearing. Will definitely visit again.

Here in a group of six for dinner. It was a lovely night and we were surprised that it wasn't busier. This great looking pub come restaurant really does have a bit of wow factor when it comes to looks... simply stunning inside.  There's a large central bar area and a separate dining room. All our meals and great, no one complained about the quality or serving sizes and they really were decent in size. The only let down was the friendliness of the waitress, she wasn't. Staff attentiveness and making patrons is a huge part of the overall experience for diners. I will return as it's in a great location across from the Carlton Gardens and along the tram route..<br/>

From the moment you open the door at St Andrews you receive a warm welcome.<br/>The staff were attentive, knowledgeable and outstanding (Management - make this a prerequisite in the future)<br/>The steak range and swordfish cooked to perfection.<br/>The wine is a little on the pricey side, but remember ordering starters and mains doesn't sustain businesses like St Andrews. <br/>Get a dessert and bottle of vino into you and we'll be seeing reviews for this place in 20 years time.

Absolutely amazing from start to finish. Fillet Steak was cooked to medium rare perfection and the choice of sides and ability to mix it up worked well. My companions sampled the full range of steaks and the swordfish special and all devoured their meals. Sticky date pudding and cheesecake were an outstanding finish. Service from the lovely English lass was attentive and professional. Talented chef in the kitchen. Will return.

Ate here recently with a friend, it is a beautiful pub that has a real country feel about it.  I loved the decor, it reminded me of a family friends farm with the old photos and decor.  Really is lovely, service was great too.<br/><br/>Our wines were nice, a good wine list and food menu  We shared the pork belly which was nice, good crackling on the pork.  My kangaroo was really delicious and I enjoyed this with the beetroot risotto, the beetroot risotto was a first for me and I loved it.  Unfortunately my friends curry wasn't that great.  It was very sweet and a whopping $28! Very expensive for a curry and the fact that it wasn't even enjoyable seemed to hurt the pocket even more.<br/><br/>A nice pub, but next time I will skip the food and just have a bevie.
Nikki
Just had a wedding here yesterday and would say the space is great for a ceremony/reception, ambience is really great and wine selection was delicious. Food highlights for me as it was cocktail was: crumbed prawn with a sauce , pulled pork roll, mini hamburgers and duck pancake , lamb skewers with cheese a must and chicken skewers nice too. <br/>Staff friendly if anything a bit too tidy , I’d put my wine down for two minutes and it seemed to disappear every time. Lol <br/>Would recommend that’s for sure !!
Linda
I quite enjoy this place and will often turn to it if I’m after a relatively quiet, warm and inviting pub meal that serves all the pub classics to a good standard. Good hospitality can be expected here too!
Jess_e88
Their food is always cooked very well and delicious, and the staff are lovely. Definitely above average pub fare! They renovated awhile back too so it's got a nice atmosphere.
Hello. Imnikki
Charming and cosy pub overlooking Carlton Gardens. We dined on a Saturday night without a booking and were seated straight away by the friendly staffs.<br/><br/>We were blown away by the food when our dishes arrived. The Chicken Parma was huge, and it was covered on top by gooey creamy cheese and surrounded by crisped crunchy cheese on the edges. Cheese done two ways on a Parma that was moist and tender - loved it! The chips however weren't that great.<br/><br/>The Spanish Chorizo Pappardelle was coated in a rich creamy sauce and accompanied by pieces of chorizo and roasted pumpkins. The salty chorizo and the sweet pumpkins worked wonders to create a beautiful balance of flavours in such a decadent dish.<br/><br/>The Eye Fillet was cooked to perfection. My partner asked for medium rare and received a sexy piece of meat that was pink in the middle, with some juice flowing, and soft yet slightly springy. Safe to say that he polished off everything on his plate.<br/><br/>While the 3 mains were excellent, the lamb, feta and mint croquettes for starter was just slightly above average. While the execution was spot on - creamy on the inside, and crispy on the outside, the mint somewhat overpowered the signature gamey taste of the lamb.<br/><br/>Not the cheapest meal when alcohol is added into the equation, but it was a very tasty meal indeed.<br/>

Second time here and just as good as the first.<br/>I had the Eye Fillet with tossed vegies and mash. Steak was cooked to Medium perfection and melted in my mouth. Vegies fresh and crisp and mashed potato smooth and delicious. Tried the Anchovy and Mustard butter with my steak which I enjoyed (although it was so cold it took quite a while to melt on my steak).<br/>He had the Black Angus Porterhouse with Steak Fries and Salad. Only criticism was not enough dressing on the salad but otherwise very enjoyable.<br/>Pub has a great classy atmosphere and staff are very attentive.<br/>Prices seem to have increased since last visit - normally a glass of wine from a pub bistro is around $7.50 their wine list was on average $10 a glass which to me is a little high.<br/>Nevertheless a very good experience overall.

My partner and I had dinner there last night. It was a relatively quiet night w only 2 tables full, yet we were sat next a kitchen door. This is one of the worst seats in the house! <br/><br/>The food on the other hand was really good. We started w duck spring rolls which were full of meat and excellent quality, but some seasoning would help. <br/><br/>Then some wedges which were the best I’ve had. For mains we had pork belly which was great but unfortunately too fatty overall. <br/><br/>Then it was a chicken parma of course, which was HUGE! Tasty too, but the salad and the chips let this dish down. <br/><br/>The drinks were good but definitely not cheap. A small range of craft beers and tassie cider. Overall it was a solid night.

3G:Great ambient,Great food & Great service. Had the rib eye & porterhouse steak cooked according to how we like it. The steak chips & creamy mashed potatoes on the side were delicious.Kid was given the activity pack without us asking. Overall, good family dining experience. Will be back again.
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:<br/>+ Porterhouse<br/>+ Pannacotta<br/><br/>Came here with some mates to grab a feed and we tried out the set menu for the day. Food was great and consistent across the board. These guys just serve generous and tasty food. I ordered the calamari entree (these were ok, but lack a bit more flavour), the porterhouse (cooked medium, tender and delicious), and the panna cotta to finish off (another nice dish, light and tangy - a perfect finish to the meal). Service was attentive and fast and the place had a great vibe. Will definitely be back!<br/><br/><br/>

I came here the other night with a friend as it was in the entertainment guide. It was well worth the visit, we both ordered the eye fillet, which was delicious. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Will definitely recommend.

What an interesting specials list! We were told it was all "game meat" this Sunday. I had a BEAUTIFUL venison & bacon pot pie, so rich & delicious, & my partner had camel rump rigatoni pasta, which was also Delilah. Great wine list, including organic. I think we were $7 or so overcharged for a drink (maybe it gets confusing for staff as to small or large glasses) as they have the option for both. Overall, quality gastropub with a bit of extra interest.
Daniel Wirjoprawiro
Great pub. Great for a quiet chill day with friends! Good selection of your favourite pub food and vegetarian options. The specials are amazing! <br/><br/>Make sure you get a seat with a good view of the beautiful Carlton Gardens!
Meeee Hungry!
We were in the area and in need of a feed! Given they were on the Melbourne Entertainment Card (2 for 1), we thought we would give The Pumphouse a go. <br/><br/>The eye fillet was cooked incredibly well for medium-rare. It just melted in your mouth. Great flavour combo with the buttery mash and the mushroom sauce. The pistachio crusted lamb rump was very flavoursome with its mint puree and potato rosti. Was perhaps a little bit too cooked for my liking, but was saved before becoming too overcooked!<br/><br/>Staff were super friendly and attentive. We were able to sit in the more formalised dining area to watch the 20-20, which was separate to the relaxed atmosphere of the bar where the cricket was the highlight!<br/><br/>A rather pleasant dinner!
Spolj
The Pumphouse is so much more than a pub. A great variety of excellently executed dishes from a simple saganaki with balsamic glaze to a perfectly cooked eye fillet absolutely made pur night! The function room out the back looks perfect for any occasion with some great beers on tap. Professional staff and relaxed atmosphere make for a very enjoyable meal. Couldn't recommend this place enough!
Good Food Good Mood
My sister had her engagement party yesterday in the private function room (called St Andrews Conservatory) of the Pumphouse Hotel. Chosen purely because she loves the meals at said hotel, the finger food was fantastic. It’s such a gorgeous space too I can see why she was stuck with a Sunday as the place was all booked up on Saturday’s with peoples weddings. The high glass ceilings and lantern like lighting were really beautiful and we got plenty of sunlight filling the room. There was more than adequate seating, a lovely fireplace and they even filled the space with pretty posies of flowers.<br/>The food was really plentiful to the point where people were so full they had to turn it away. My favourites were the calamari, the sweet chilli prawns and the satay chicken skewers. Also the pesto chicken gnocchi that I wasn’t supposed to eat (diet life). Great venue for an event
Mandi Vegan
Service here is amazing! Feel like they really care for their customers and nothing seemed like an imposition for them. We had the vegetable risotto and eggplant involtini which were enjoyable.

As pub meals go it doesn't get much better than the Pumphouse Hotel. <br/>Relaxed ambience, great service from a young staff, good wine and beer choices and affordable and quality food. <br/>Since our last visit the bar and dining room have had a makeover. More open plan but still delightful👍😊
Hailey
We had booked the private function room and were so pleased with the service. They always made sure you had a drink and were so friendly. The eggplant rolltini was excellent. I'm not big on soup but didn't mind that either! Really great.

Really good food. We had gnocchi and eggplant involtini which were great and higher than expectation.<br/>Food came on time and tasted delicious<br/><br/><br/>

Very attentive staff with amazing tap beer; had the Wild Yak and house wine; Shiraz Cab. Roast garlic jus with the steak is absolutely to die for!

Really loved this place! The ambience was the highlight and the staff were friendly and accomodating. We came for a small birthday gathering with family, and this place was perfect for the occasion. My meal was filling, and I enjoyed the roesti and greens that came with it. I had the Green with Envy mocktail which was also nice. Altogether, a pleasant evening and recommended establishment.

Kangaroo burger, Slowly braised lamb ragu pappardelle, Slowly braised lamb shanks and Banana and Baileys bread and butter pudding!!!! 🍽🍽<br/>The Pumphouse is one of the best pubs in Melbourne in my opinion, I really enjoyed coming here as the atmosphere was really friendly and really upbeat 😊<br/>The food was amazing and I highly recommend coming here for a really warm and hearty meal! 😍😍
Hello World!
Pumphouse hotel is one of oldest hotels in Melb. Thus inner deco is very 19th century, with a big yak head hanging near the bar and a real fireplace burning wood in the dining room! We ordered salmon and curry of the day. The salmon had a crisp skin and matches with the mashed potato. The curry of the day was gigantic! You can have it for at least 2 meals! Worth of mention is their bread before meals, it was the best bread in Melbourne!
Fiona
Came for a quick after work dinner with my partner. The food was delicious - chicken parmigiana was  normal-human size and seemed like real chicken breast (a healthy parma, if ever there was such a thing), and my barramundi was delicious - crispy skinned, with a smoked tomato accompaniment on a lovely bed of risotto. <br/><br/>~ $70 for two main meals and two beers

Was treated to Mother's Day lunch today had a wonderful experience great food the staff were welcoming and friendly and the venue was great
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
From the outside, Pumphouse Hotel looks like a typical brown-brick pub, but once you walk through the doors you’re greeted with a neat and modern dining area and cosy bar. I have lunch in the bistro section, where the menu offers traditional pub fare as well as other seasonal dishes with more of a European-influence.

Good solid pub meal. Had steak which was very nice with mushroom sauce and mash side. Pretty impressed for first visit. Unpretentious pub food.
Kruger
Great well furnished pub. Restaurant area is nice and the noise level is low enough to be able to hold conversations easily. Good pub menu supplemented by a good range of chef specials. Steaks are excellent. Good for couples, friends and groups.

The web site suggests, amongst other things,  for "a quick drink with friends", well forget it.  Today, a friend and I went in for coffee in the afternoon.  When we ordered we were asked abruptly if "the cafe up the road was closed".  Although put out we ordered coffee and the reaction was "well aren't you going to order lunch" - at that stage we weren't sure if we would, but we might have.  Then the response was - well at least you could order some beers.  This was disgraceful customer service and I felt completely humiliated.  I would never go back into that hotel-even if the food was extraordinary.  No wonder there was no-one in the entire dining room.  Massive training or destress program needed.  Not somewhere to take a business associate.
John Parry
Great meal. 10 of us went here for dinner. I was a bit sceptical as the place was very quite. Meals came out and I was very impressed. I got the Lamb Shoulder and both portion size and quality was great. Everyone else was wrapped with their meal. To top it off $8 Pints of craft beer.
J0rdz
Modest, oldstyled pub that doesn't disappoint. Standard no frills menu, which is in no way a negative. Place doesn't try to be something it isn't. Staff are amazingly friendly and very welcoming. Loved the place!
Sandy Jeffries
Nope. Keep walking.. Fish n chips shouldn't be that hard! I have never been given fish that was so dry and stringy that it was inedible! Chicken parma just tasted of deli ham, not good enough for any pub. Salad and chips were good, thank goodness as that was all that was edible. Nice venue in a great spot but skip the food and eat elsewhere.
JLR50
No complaints. Had an early in the week lunch at the Pumphouse. Eye filet steak was good quality, cooked to perfection, accompanied by good quality, tasty vegetables. The Shiraz by the glass was excellent. The service was faultless - admittedly we were the only people in the restaurant, and it is a nice environment. To top it off, we used the Entertainment book and got one meal for free. Happy customer.

The Pumphouse is another pub looking to give patrons greater refinement in its dining experience. Though pleasant in food, atmosphere and service it needs to go a little further...
Skinny Glutton
The lamb shoulder was tender, succulant and the jus seeped through the delicate meat. The polenta was slightly herbed, but not overally flavourful. Yet when paired with the lamb it was a perfect marriage of flavour and texture. The serving size was surprisingly generous for the price – I was quite full by the end of my meal and I can eat a helluva lot of food in one sitting. Rosemary and smoked paprika cutlets w/ black olive and tomato tapenade, smoked tomato salsa, kipflers, sauteed spinach. ($34.90) The cutlets were cooked perfectly, with a subtle balance of rendered fat and succulent meat. The creative force at work in the kitchen was evident on the plate; a sprinkling of baby capers and the tapenade offering some considered and well-measured complimentary tastes to the dish. The most surprising inclusion was the two little mounds of smoked tomato salsa – I can’t say I’ve ever had smoked tomato before and the experience gave depth and character to the meal. The Pumphouse Hotel offers u

Nice food here for a hotel and pleasant surroundings as well. The relatives who recommended this (and joined us) were right on the money here. The food was tasty, the servings were a good size and the dessert menu tempted us and won.
Parma Daze
The moment I walked in I liked the pub. Open fire, lots of wood, the whole place was warm and cosy, yet spacious (if thats possible) Plenty of leaning space over one side of the bar, and opening up to a rather large bistro over the other side
Hungry Sasha
Me, the burger and the ice-cream sandwitch. At the pumphouse hotel I had the 200g black angus cheese burger and for dessert I had a strawberry choc - chip ice-cream sandwitch. The burger was a decent size an tasted very nice. The ice-cream sandwitch came with fary floss and the strawberrys with alcahole

Visited the Pumpahouse on Sunday night. All i will say is service was perfect food was the best pub meal I have eaten ever and the atmosphere was great . Guys please continue what you are doing . And to the chef please continue with the fantastic meals that you provided to me and my family .
Sarena Strong
Rude old bartender. My husband and I just moved into the neighbourhood and started going to The Pumphouse a couple times a week. The older balding man behind the bar is one of the rudest and most bitter I've had to deal with. Each time I've been in there he has been patronizing and clearly hates his life.<br/><br/>I'm from Canada so maybe I'm too polite, but I'm also a bartender and find his attitude unacceptable for someone in hospitality, regardless of continent. <br/><br/>Unfortunately we won't be going back, which is a shame, because their pumpkin salad was awesome and the waitresses were all lovely.
Tim
Best pub in the area.. Very cozy little hotel on Nicholson street. Had dinner last night before going to the theatre with a few friends. Great staff, prompt service & a better steak than Squires. Nice array of tap beer and not a pokie in sight makes this pub my new local.
Landrfrancis
50th Wedding Anniversary Lunch at 'Room with a View', the Pumphouse Hotel, 31 August 2014.. 'Room with a View' was an excellent location for a celebratory lunch for 39 people. The private space, the atmosphere, the table settings, the food and staff were excellent. The outlook across to the Carlton Gardens enhances the venue.
Hellojimmorrison
Don't eat here as vegetarian. The chef obviously has no respect for vegetarians. Incredibly boring and bland options, everything else smelt and looked great though. You are in fitzroy in 2014, grow up. Also costs WAY too much for these small plates of boring. Should of had weetbix at home. Cashew salad and the beer of the month was nice actually, but don't go here
Urbanette
Easter Sunday lunch = delicious. I went here on Easter Sunday with my mother over from Perth. I had a Barramundi and she had a peri peri chicken dish. Both were fantastic. The service was also very good as the waiter was attentive and didn't keep us waiting. There was a big group of people using the centre table but this didn't negatively impact our experience. We used the Entertainment Book voucher as well which offered good value.<br/><br/>Will definitely recommend.
Love It Or Like It
Found a fabulous Melbourne pub . Lovely staff, delicious food, smashing decor ,beautiful energy on my way back there ! Thanks for a very pleasent evening .

Service,Space & Value. I recently organised a business lunch for 7 people at The Pumphouse Hotel in Fitzroy (our 2nd get-together at this pub) and was more than happy with the service and the food. I chose one of their daily specials - slow cooked lamb neck with parsnip mash etc. and it was delightful. <br/>Special thanks to Tony (the manager) for his hospitality and kind attention - surprising to find in a large metropolitan pub. Some of my guests had been there for the first time and were pleased with my choice. Thanks Tony - we will be back in a few weeks.

The food here is amazing. Very good service by the guy & girl behind the bar, despite being a full house. I naturally ordered a burger it was massive. Juicy pattie, crispy bacon & home made relish. Top notch meals!!!
Jessica Nicholson
After hearing the great reviews, came here for a steak and was recommended the 'butcher's choice' special. I ordered it medium rare and it arrived medium well done (if that). I was disappointed ($34 later) and sent the steak back to the kitchen. To our astonishment the chef then sent the steak back to our table stating it was medium rare. Staff were not particularly professional, and I am certainly not a person who habitually returns their meals - I have never seen one be rereturned to the customer!! I won't be coming again.

Tough Meat. We have visited the pumphouse twice recently. Nice surroundings, clean bathrooms but the service is reeeeaaallyyyyy slow...on both occasions we were almost the only ones there...what are the staff doing??? First visit was a round fish dishes and chicken all of which really nice but not sure what happens to the meat!! First visit was kangaroo, next visit was eye fillet. How is eye fillet tough and for $32 it needs to be good.
Sarah
Well they couldnt get one dish right out of six - dry chicken burger, dusted flour calamari x2 , disgustingly fish risotto which smelt like it was off, undercooked gooey fritters, and prawn and scallop risotto without a scallop. Very disapointed
Fi Maxwell
Good beer, good food, good service. I come to this lovely little pub fairly often and I always have a great time. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the pub-style food is simple and delicious. The staff and fun and friendly and the pub itself is cosy and comfortable. They seem to have quite a large number of loyal regulars which speaks to the quality of this pub if these people keep coming back. Will keep going!
Sarah Marie
Hidden treasure. Ive never really noticed this pub, despite it being on a main road. Friendly service, delicious meals, best chicken parma!
Matt Sev
Great!. A must before every Imax visit, they have one of the best burgers in Melbourne! Add some craft beer and a nice atmosphere, the place has it all.
CCs
Great food!!! Casual, cosy & fantastic friendly staff! Will be defidently visiting again!!!
Daniel
• Friendly staff <br/>• Speedy service (~18 minutes order time)<br/>• Excellent food – Pumphouse Burger was exquisite and calamari was beautiful. The chips were a bit undercooked.
Mark Traynor
Head barman/waiter rude. Food overpriced and portions pitiful. Ordered the "small calamari" at $18. Basically paid for a plate full of rocket salad and 6 small rings of calamari. Seem to have encountered the EXACT same experience as another user "gourmetting gallop" and that review was posted 12months ago....some things never change then eh?? Will not return.
Cam
I'm a regular at this cozy pub. The staff are really friendly and know their products- had a great wine recommendation from the barman (and even a taste before I settled on the bottle, classy service!). Nice shady outdoor seating and yummy food add up to a winning pub combo for me
Glassed
Great place. Awesome hotel, it's a regular for us. Friendly staff and the food is excellent.
Mitch Cameron
Cool hotel, very friendly and approachable staff. The meals are excellent, i had the rib eye, cooked perfectly med rare. Will defo go back.
Jenny Kmox
Very disappointing. Had dined here in the past and enjoyed it. Would not dine here again. My freind said his steak was the worst he had eaten in a very long time. He said it tasted like it was thawed out from frozen in a microwave and then grilled. Wines very expensive. The restaurant has a lot of potential, but chairs and tables and set up very baisc for elegant surroundings. Service average. Could do a lot better.
Mike W
Dont like it. My first visit to the Pumphouse HOTEL was recommended by a relative. Firstly its overpriced for the quality of the food. Soon after entering we were greeted by a male staff member “You can’t just stand there”... I think he meant “Can I help you’’ but seemed to think we were intruders? Once we explained we had a booking we were seated and drinks order taken. The décor was well done and was a great trip back in time though paper napkins struck me as unusually cheap. The place is not full by a long shot. We order dips to begin while we think about mains. It was a mix of dips distinguishable only by colour not taste, too much bread (which tasted OK) for too little dip and 4-5 olives. I would have got a dozen Oysters but $30 is just pushing it. We order mains. I order special of the day the waitress returns “No Rib eye left but you can still get rump steak’ I order chicken stuffed with brie. My friends get Prawn Rissotto which as described as “too salty” by one and “not enough” by the other. My Chicken was juicy but tasteless and almost missing the supposed Brie stuffing, the Leek and Potato Gratin was wayyyyy too oily and was served with spot of Jus and small serve of Broccolini. When it came time to pay they charged my credit card twice and couldn’t give me a receipt. This was all handled by the lead waiter who seemed to be amused by the whole incident. If you go, don’t go near him. Not returning.
Unforkettable
What a burger. This place is such a hidden gem - it's unpretentious and serves up great meals. Ever since I had the dreamy rich duck ravioli before it renovated, it has always been on my mind... Went back today again and had the pumphouse burger - it was divine. Although the thick chips were a letdown, the beef patty was perfectly seasoned (better than the gourmet burger joints) with caramelised onions on a toasted panini. The portion was massive but I gladly accepted the challenge. The chicken Parma was a thick breast encased in what seemed like herbed polenta crumb.. Sadly it was a lil soggy Nonetheless I love this place - burgerlicious. Please put the duck ravioli back on the menu!!

The restaurant is nice and clean but my partner and I both agreed the balance wasn't quite right. It's a pub, with a great looking eating area, meal prices would suggest you are in for something special but it was nice - nothing more. Don't agree with other reviews for best steaks in Melbourne, they were nice but I've made nice ones at home too. The stand out on my plate was the truffle mash!
Cookiemonsta
I was preparing to write a scathing review, as our first meal was terrible. We ordered the rib eye steak, and both sent it back. Dreadful quality - tough, with gristle & fat throughout the entire piece. However the chef was fully redeemed with the replacement: our porterhouse steak was magnificent. Perfectly done, delicious truffle mash & accompaniments. Well done Pumphouse, we had heard the steak was good and the second version certainly was!
Laura
Like it.. We ate here recently and enjoyed the outdoor seating area. Although the hotel is located on busy Nicholson St, the outdoor eating area is on the side street which is nice and quiet. I ordered the Pumphouse Burger and thought it was great. Very tasty and lots of food in it - it was massive! My friend ordered the catch of the day (fish and chips!) which was also really good.
Charlie
Never again. As part of a family group we visited The Pumphouse Hotel to celebrate a birthday, for a Saturday lunch. The place was fairly quiet. Not always a good sign.<br/>Service was erratic and we placed our orders, which arrived in reasonable time. <br/>For the prices and trying to be a cut above the rest, it was quickly evident that it is only trading on reputation, not quality.<br/>I ordered the Angus steak, it was medium and pink. But fatty bits were hidden under the mushroom sauce. The chips were frozen variety and the salad a bunch of leaves, lacking inspiration.<br/>My daughter's chicken was too dry, and my wife's pork belly had a burnt caramelized sauce.<br/>Others complained the duck, so it was pretty much a hit and miss affair. <br/>The waiting staff never asked how we enjoyed the food - clearly less interested and dispassionate. <br/>We ordered desserts and the sticky date pudding was inedible and overheated. We asked for it to be removed from the bill. Other desserts were average, and when we asked for coffee, we were told the coffee machine was broken. This is the ultimate sin in Melboune!<br/>Overall a very unsatisfactory $500 plus meal for our group. They won't see us again.

Good Food and Beer and a Nice Atmosphere.. Went here for a quick diner, had some Barramundi which was tasty and washed it down with a pint of the Yak, pretty decent pub.

Average, Average, Average. Good things about this place: Presentation for food, ideas on menu.<br/><br/>Not so good things: Price is way to high for quality of food, food is very average (and bland)<br/><br/>With all the great places in Melbourne to eat, I wouldn't return.

Very enjoyable experience. Enormous serving sizes. Food was great. Good range in the normal menu, and the specials made it hard to choose what to have!

Fitzroys Best steaks by far. It is hard to find a good decent pub these days, bistro dining, gastro pub, restaurant quality? will you have to take a number or recieve table service. Can you get a parma that doesn't come from a deep frier or frozen along with a good vego dish and a steak that is not card board or overcooked. Well you can look no further, The Pumphouse will cater to all needs and excel. Head Chef Daniel Whitehead has taken the tired old girl to new levels in the past 12 months with innovative seasonal menu changes and refined the experience of pub dining. Including all the old favorites you expect at your local-burgers, chicken parmas, Angus steak sandwiches and market fresh beer battered fish n chips, to possibly the best selection of steaks available in the area. From Wagyu rumps, Black Angus Sirloins, Grain fed Scotch and High Country Rib Eyes. Coupled with house made sauces to rival Melbournes best eateries!! The Pumphouse has it all. An intimate dinner for two next to the open fire, a hens night, birthday party or a wedding in the famous Conservatory function room, catered from the same kitchen with the same eye for detail on every plate and dish, this is one pub to return to time and time again and never be disappointed.
