The most delishious fragrant and exciting food I've tasted ! I really enjoyed the way that I could share dinner with my friends and try so many dishes together on the Injera platter .. Saba and her mother are just the best 🙏🏽Thank you for a beautiful evening .

Stumbled across this authentic Ethiopian restaurant. Food was very hearty and yummy. Served in their traditional way on fermented bread and eaten with fingers. Great experience! And everything is gluten free. Also the coffee experience was very unique. Watched someone blacken coffee beans on a stove on the floor and brew with a traditional wooden jug

Yep, Good food, great value and excellent service. Walked us through the menu explaining the options. We decided to go with the vege platter for two. Excellent quality curries and plenty of it.

Amazing food & great service! Highly recommend. Loved their vegetarian combo with injera. Fava beans with boiled egg and feta was a taste sensation and went well with the other two dishes, their red lentils and dinish. Thank you, will definitely be back.

My friends and I found Saba's after getting Zomato Gold (great rating btw) so we decided to visit! First time trying Ethiopian foods so I was excited to try something new. I really enjoyed reading about how this restaurant was founded which gave a humane personal touch to the restaurant - all mom's recipes! Our main waitress was Saba who was wonderful - attentive and friendly throughout the evening. We ordered pretty much every meat and vegetarian dishes on the menu - around $20 per dish. Everything tasted fresh and home-cooked :) My favourites were Tel Sebhi ($25) and Dorho Sebhi ($25). .
Tel Sebhi = Diced goat that's slow-cooked in berbere until it's super tender with rich red colour. It was slightly too spicy for me but actually went well together with fluffy injera. .
Dorho Sebhi = Chicken that's slow-cooked served with hard-boiled egg (tradionally cooking this dish used to be the test given by mother-in-law to their daughter-in-law). Kinda reminded me of Korean Dak-doritang which is braised spicy chicken with chili paste. It was a familiar taste but regardless, tasted good.
.
Overall, it was a pleasant experience. It took a bit of time for the dishes to come out but it made sense once they came out - the way it was set up required for all the dishes to be presented together. It was a wonderful introduction to Ethiopian/Sudanese cuisine and I highly recommend it to those who enjoy trying new foods. FYI - vegetarian dishes were also great! Just too many to mention them all :)

Coffee experience was authentic. Injera was a bit sour to my partner’s taste but I love it. Downside is my hair and clothes absorb the smells of the spices and dishes (shows how full of aroma those delicious dishes are) Great experience!

I visited Saba’s last night with my partner and young baby. The staff were very accommodating to our little one and welcoming.
The beautiful smells of spices could be smelt when entering the restaurant and didn’t disappoint when we ordered our food.
We tried a deconstructed samosa, a vegetarian and meat mixed plate, all delicious.
Additionally I was very happy that all food was gluten free as I’m a coeliac and dining out can often be difficult.
Will definitely be returning for another delicious and delightful experience.

Came here once with a friend. Didn't know the name of the restaurant but the location stuck in my mind. I ended up returning here later on a date and realised I was back in the location that had given me the good memories. Definitely worth coming here. Food is amazing.

We love the earthy feel and vibe this place has, which serves home-cooked Ethiopian recipes that are essentially Saba's (owner) mother's recipes. What this dinning place appreciates (very close to Indian traditions) is eating together and using your hands to eat.

Ordered a Slow-cooked Chicken on the Bone, and a Vegetarian and a Non Vegetarian platter (allowed to choose three.from the menu for.each platter) wherein we chose an okra based lamb dish, yellow split-peas cooked in turmeric paste, rwd split peas, potato and cabbage vegetable, diced beef in Ethippian spices and slow cooked goat. All the above was served with plenty of fermented Injera (very similar to dosas but made from the staple teff flour). We also ordered Ethiopia's gift to the whole world - Coffee (Which the owner boasted, was high on demand and there's always a waiting...But were lucky as we were the only ones who ordered it at that particular time).

Clearly the coffee (as claimed by the owner), slow cooked chicken on the bone and Injera were the winners. Flavorful, tender and perfectly spiced, slow cooked chicken lived up to its name. Slightly savory, slightly sour, this super soft sourdough bread went well with everything we ordered (and guess what? It's.glutenfree). Coffee was one among the best we have tried in Melbourne.

Everything else was pretty decent and nice...although, we weren't too fascinated by the Split red-peas and yellow-peas as it is something we have grown-up with (as it's staple to Indian cuisine too). In fact, it was exactly like one of the variations we make at home.

We were warned that the coffee will take 20 minutes to serve, and we were fine with it, but seemed like it took forever (almost 35 to 40 minutes...Even though we had ordered it at the time of ordering food). Although worth the wait we almost missed going to a very famous croissant place (few steps away from here).

Pricing is decent and service is friendly. Plenty of Vegetarian and Vegan options to choose from.

Went to the place for lunch. Had the Vegetarian combo meal which included Shiro, A potato carrot dish and some greens. To go along with it was injeera. It was a unique experience as it was the first time I was having Ethiopian cuisine. Liked the food and was actually similar to some dishes back home in India, so I was pleasantly surprise. Had a pot of coffee which was served along with popcorn and it was truly one of the best coffee I've had. Will definitely go to this place again.

We had the pleasure of being served our first Ethiopian cuisine by Saba and it was wonderful. There was a very nice variety of meat (beef, goat, chicken) and veggies as recommended by Saba based on her family experience with the traditional Ethiopian/Sudanese cuisine. We were curious and left with the regret that we don’t have a similar experience to look forward to when we return home. I will definitely recommend Saba’s to any of our friends who visit Melbourne as it was a fantastic dining experience made all the better by the personalised outstanding service by Saba.

Even better, everything is gluten free and there's so many veg/vegan options. Couldn't have asked for a better introduction to this wonderful cuisine! Just a heads up, this place is NOT byo, as one of the websites states! 5 stars!

The vegan options here are incredible. The injera is spot on. I love that it is a family business - the type of business people should support. The waiting times can be very very long but if you have time to spare and you’re not in a rush it is well worth it.

My favourite restaurant! I'm a coeliac and absolutely everything is gluten-free, so no worries about cross-contamination! The restaurant is colourful and bright, with delicious smells and the friendliest staff. Food is DELICIOUS, but not for those who can't handle getting their hands dirty (literally), and there's a varying range of spiciness to accomodate everyone. Fantastic vegan and vegetarian option too!

Exquisite! I miss shared eating since coming to Australia, so this left me warmly nostalgic as it satisfied my hunger. I love the injera, doro wat, and Ethiopian tea; there were more dishes but we ordered several, I can't remember them all. I usually come here with several friends and it's been delightful so far. Finally, if you choose to eat out here, be ready to use your hand to eat up. It's truly not difficult and if you're still struggling with that, a little brain-hand-eye coordination should help. But if that fails, just ask for cutlery.

I loooooove Ethiopian food and Saba's is no exception to my love. When ordering, we stated the vegetarian meal (most Ethiopian is vegan so we didnt think we'd have to specify) but the waitress double checked with us (thankfully) as one of their dishes is vegetarian and not vegan. Relaxed atmosphere and fresh food. You do have to wait time for the meal so if you're starving and need something super quick, heres not the place (or in my experience, most African food) but its worth it- freshness and quality presides over fast food any day.

Having never eaten Ethiopian food I had absolutely no idea what to expect when a friend selected this venue for a group meal. I must say I had a delightful evening, not only in trying a new cuisine and sharing many really tasty dishes with friends but the young lady serving us was such a pleasure to deal with & so bright and bubbly she was one of the highlights of the entire meal! As far as I know this is a family owned restaurant and she was a relative of the two chefs out the back. If you aren't aware, the way to eat the food here is by sharing a flat bread with the table called an injera and you pick salads or curries to go on top of the flat bread and you eat it all by hand wrapping things up with your bread.  We tried the foul, dorho sebhi, denish and peanut salad. All these complimented each other and were very mild in flavour. While I won't be heading back in a rush due to Brunswick being quite out of my way I can certainly recommend Saba's for a unique dining experience, which is tasty and met with lovely customer service.

Never tried Ethipioan before so it's hard to compare. But for me it was amazing. The experience itself (sharing your food with your friends and eat without cutlery) is worth it! We shared 3 vegetarian combos and a the slow cooked lamb dish (Keyho Sebhi) with 4 people. Although 3 plates would have been enough to fill our stomaches, we couldn't resist to take another one! Personally I preferred the lamb dish as it was the most spicy one. Unfortunately they ran out of Hamli that day so out of the vegetarian meals I prefer Foul. The staff was more than friendly and made it even more an unique experience :) Only thing to complain about: could have been a bit warmer in there what doesn't matter anymore after you ate the hot dishes!

The menu is exceptional for people with allergies, I'm coeliac, and both my partner and I are vegetarians and I can say as I have now had everything on the menu multiple times from so many revisits to this extraordinary restaurant that EVERYTHING is DELICIOUS and we always waddle out because we are so full. The meals are incredibly cheap as well. I cant really put into words how much my partner and I love this place!!!! 15/5 ✨

The desire for trying cuisines from all over the world is something that my Father and I have in common. Fortunately for him, it’s a lot easier. So, when I find a treasure like Saba’s Ethiopian restaurant I just have to share the experience with him. The idea of indulging in  100% Gluten Free, traditional Ethiopian cuisine is why dad, nanna, Brody and I met up in the hectic Brunswick street in Fitzroy one Saturday back in January.

The staff know us now 😊 the food is wonderful - traditional Ethiopian food is eaten with your hands and their tradition flat bread injera is made with Teff flour so it is gluten free and not heavy at all! Which means you can eat loads more! The curries were full of flavour and I can't wait to go back soon. Most people I speak to have never tried Ethiopian food but honestly you're missing out!! In this restaurant you are treated as guest to an Ethiopian home as the very friendly hostess take you through the cultural experience.

Just sit back and let the hostess organise the menu for you. She would even roast your coffee for you at the front of the restaurant just as it is done in a typical Ethiopian home.

We decided to come here after reading that they offered gluten free injera. In fact, the whole menu was gluten free and they were very accommodating to other dietary requirements (dairy free). We were very impressed with the waitress who was very friendly and knowledgeable. When we ordered she enquired about any food allergies/intolerances and offered to separately serve the feta cheese so others could still enjoy it.

They even have free traditional coffee around lunch time on Fridays and Saturdays. They'll roast the beans right in front and serve it to you after your meal.

Perfect restaurant for coeliacs wanting to try another cuisine.

Visited here with my sister a couple of weekends ago and left very happy. You can tell it is a small family run restaurant, with the front of house staff bringing a homely welcoming vibe to Saba's. We decided to let them choose what we would be served, and ended up with the injera with a slow cooked lamb curry, the "foul" curry (vegetarian), and the peanut salad. The only thing I would have changed was the peanut salad as we didn't enjoy this...we preferred the hot dishes with the injera. It's hard to eat (until you get the hang of it I guess) but the injera was lovely and spongy and the curries had tonnes of flavour. We both left very satisfied and looking forward to returning!

Great experience, very friendly waitress who was full of fun banter. My first time eating at an Ethiopian restaurant and it was a lovely experience. Saba's was selected by a friend but it had been on my to-do list for a while. The flavours were incredible. We just told the waitress to bring us out a selection of her choosing. It's a messy affair eating with your hands but hey let's face it, isn't that secretly what we all would like to do everywhere we go. Would certainly return!!

My first Ethiopian dining experience and safe to say I'm loving it! Had the vegetarian combination (chef’s selection of three vegetarian stew) and Dorhi Sebhi (slow cooked chicken). I was particularly loving the unique taste of each individual dishes as itself with or without the Injera (flat bread). The Dorhi Sebhi is full of flavour and spices. Each meat that was peeled was soft and and flavourful. For beverage, I had the Ethiopian coffee which was roasted and brewed fresh. Overall, great ambience, friendly staff and authentic taste.

Located in Fitzroy, Saba's Ethiopian Restaurant made its name by humbly serving only traditional Ethiopian dishes. It was the first time TwoPaperPen tasted traditional Ethiopian food and we gladly opened our taste palette to a new cuisine. The dining area is decorated with woven basket and painted lanterns to set a traditional vibe. As we entered the restaurant and set to dine, we had a little introduction to Ethiopian cuisine. We had their Vegetarian Combination and Dorho Sebhi.

First time I had Ethiopian food and surprised with the flavour and spiciness.
I had the Dorho Sebhi - it's a slow cooked chicken, which mean the texture is so soft and easy to peel. It comes with injera - a fermented flat bread made out of teff. Also with 3 vegetarian combination: Chinese broccoli dish (HAMLI); Potatoes, cabbage & carrots (DINISH); split red lentils (BIRSEN). For veggies, i love the hamli & dinish!

Being caught up in the cyclonic whirlwind of today’s technological age is a blessing and a curse in the way that it slowly separates us from core belief systems we are afforded during childhood. The simple pleasures in life.. like the touch from a loved one, having a laugh and sharing precious moments become lost in the daily routine, lessons learn’t become background noise and softly fade into the past.

Saba's is one of my favourite restaurants on Brunswick St. The service is fantastic, all of the people involved are passionate, friendly and knowledgeable about their food and are more than happy to do the ordering for you (which I love!). The food is so delicious, there is a fantastic variety of vegetarian dishes (make sure to try the Foul - fava beans, feta and egg...yummm) and some hearty meat dishes for the carnivores (try the lamb!!!). The meals are just the right kind of spicy. Saba's is the kind of place you go for an experience, not just a meal. The food is based around sharing meals and you eat with your hands, which enhances the whole experience. This is a family-owned business and you can taste and see all the love that is channelled into it. Saba also does great work supporting local community projects. So go and support this wonderful business!!!

Food and service wise it's 5/5, the waitress was so lovely and friendly, she chose our dishes and it was delicious. also very reasonable price wise (food for 3ppl and 3 beers came to $65 and we left full and happy). Knocking off 1 point because it took 40 minutes from the point of ordering to get food on the table. The table that ordered just before us had eaten and left before our food was even served. Not surprising given there was only one person serving and one person in the kitchen, but maybe we just went on a night they didn't anticipate would be so busy. Would still happily recommend and I'll be back, I'll just try and get there a bit earlier next time.

Do you know what's the best way to know a culture? Through their food. How so, you asked? I have to be honest. I know nothing about the African culture as I've never travelled to that part of the world as yet. But, after having a taste of the food, I got a glimpse of the culture and what they represent.

Went there for the first time.

Everything we ate was just fantastic, and the waitress, who appeared to be the sole person looking after every table (the restaurant was 70% full), was incredibly helpful. Also, the service was surprisingly speedy.

It's great to go as a group because everything just ends up becoming finger food.  Just fantastic.  The menu was primarily vegetarian, with some meat dishes (I think 4 of them).  We ordered 2 meat dishes, and 2 vegetarian dishes.  Both the meat dishes were mildly spicy, and I don't think you can get Ethiopian food completely non-spicy.  The vegetarian dishes weren't spicy at all, but if you want meat, you'll need to suck it up and deal with mild to moderate spicyness.  Two of the dishes can be varied to suit the customer, but the other 2 cannot be altered in terms of spicyness.   I'd suggest ordering a mix of both meat and vegetarian dishes, because the meat can have a strong flavour, but the vegetarian dishes balance them out well.

The bread you use to scoop everything up with is the Ethiopian equivalent of naan bread in Indian cuisine, except the taste is completely different. It tastes like a larger, thinner English muffin made of rye (like rye bread) and lemon juice.  It's really different. I asked the waitress about the bread, and she said it was fermented.

I have no idea if I just ate good Ethiopian food, or bad Ethiopian food.  This is my first time eating Ethiopian food, so I can't tell you whether or not the food I had was considered good or bad by their standards.  By MY standards, it was really good.   It tasted good, my picky parents didn't complain, and the experience was very positive overall.

I'd happily recommend the restaurant to anyone I know, and that includes vegetarians and those who feel they need to eat meat.

Went to Saba on a busy Saturday night in Brunswick street. Its a small busy restaurant that opened in the middle of 2015 and is in the heart of Brunswick street. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was authentic and the staff knew their food, how it was made and were friendly and attentive. The pricing was very reasonable and eating communal food with fingers is always interesting. We were certainly full by the time the Ehtiopan coffee was served. My favourites were the spicy goat made with Ethiopian Berbere spice, while the ouzo teas was very refreshing,  a kind of "African gluhwein". Highly recommended for an informal dinner with friends and family.

I went there with 5 friends for the coffee ceremony on a Saturday for lunch. A very beautiful traditional lunch that filled me up for a very reasonable price. The cuisine and coffee were very tasty with different spices and aroma. This is definitely a must go and see for the welcoming atmosphere of the place, a fantastic meal and also the owners are pretty

Love this place, such great food! Authentic enjera made with real Teff. The service is fantastic, although it can get busy on weekends, if you can get in then go for it. The birsen lentils and fit fit are my favourite dishes, also try the lamb or beef. The beer is a real surprise, Castel is a full malt brew that is excellent with the cuisine. The wine list is damn respectable, and is the best I've seen in an ethiopian restaurant, and Ive tried most of them across Footscray, Flemington and Collingwood. Definitely the best, and our host told us this is because no corners are cut and it's pretty much home cooled Ethiopian food. Amazing.

My first foray into Ethiopian food and we had a wonderful dinner. Be sure to book - there are limited seats and many prospective couples who walked in were sadly turned away - Saba's was at capacity! I loved the injera. It reminded me of a savoury pancake-crumpet. Springy and delicious and perfect to soak up the toppings. We had the keyih sebhi - a tender lamb stew; dinish - potatoes, carrots and cabbage cooked with tumeric and other spices; alicha birsen - yellow split peas; and key sir - beetroot. All delectable. Also, try the Ethiopian beer - it was excellent.

Absolutely amazing meal here at Saba's Ethiopian Restaurant. They managed to squeeze us in early on a Friday night and the food was amazing. The service is really fast, very friendly and the spicy tea was heavenly.  We can't wait to go back!

Had the best  lunch at Saba's. If you want to try truly authentic Ethiopian food this is the place! I had a delicious vegetarian curry, soaking up all the sauce with that wonderful bread (injara?) All washed down with a nice red. I finished with an Ethiopian coffee - and as we know Ethiopia is famous for its coffee! The service was excellent and the decor is light, bright and colorful. I will definately be returning

Amazing food, great service and authentic vibe! Recommend going with people who like to try different foods as its a shared food dining experience (which means you can try a few different dishes)! The brownies are to die for as well!

Excellent service. They found a away to accommodate 5 of us even though it was full and we didn't have a booking. The concept is great. The share plate was well presented and it was easy to add more. The food was good but not quite as tasty as it's made in Africa. Have the white tea.

What a great find! At Saba's all their food is served with traditional Ethiopian bread (Injera) made from gluten free Teff, in fact, there are lots of GF and Vegan options on the menu. Creative food presentation (dishes are placed on traditional African woven baskets), prompt in their service and super polite. Thanks for sharing your passion and delicious food, we'll be back.
