Review Afghan Gallery Restaurant - Fitzroy

Onnida Thammapratheep
Very nice decoration. Food was great and flavorsome especially spiced stew beef. We had chef's selection for entree to try few different things. The taste was nice but it wasn't warm, not cold though but I expected it to be warmer as it's deep fried and steamed. We didn't send it back because it's only one piece for each of us so we just finished it. Service wasn't great with the price they charged but I think because they were busy as well. By saying that, we would definitely come back to try other dishes on the menu.

Delightful restaurant! First time trying this food and we loved it! So delicious!! Especially the lamb with the yogurt! And the creme brulé but with a special touch
Jason Minter
Such beautiful food in a really nice setting.. We had the sizzling lamb, eggplant, dhal, naan, plus a few nibbles to start.. very satisfied and will be back.. We were here on a quiet weeknight.

Overall: 5/5 experience! A MUST TRY. Very glad to have been invited out to a highly authentic Afghan restaurant. Entree (Pictured last) - Qoroutti. The soup was amazing, I think there's a few times in life I've stopped to say "wow I am really enjoying soup right now." This was one of those moments. The melting of nan as you take a sip was the cherry on top. The Qorma-e-Gosht (LAMB) is a must try. Brave diners should opt for at least a 7 (out of 10) spice level. The softness of the meat and perfect balance of spices leaves you wanting more. The dish is best enjoyed mixed with rice as it comes separate. Highly recommend the vegetarian dishes too, especially the Kabuli Palau. Only critiques: Cost of yoghurt served separately is pretty steep. Alcohol mixer is charged separately, which is a bit confusing (Don't think anyone drinks Gin straight these days). Regardless, 5/5 - A must have dining experience that supports the loveliest Afghani staff you will encounter.

The food was fragrant, not spicy. The cherry juice divine. Lovely decor and atmosphere. Happy helpful staff. A lot of choices for vegans and vegetarians. Do yourself a favour and have a traditional coffee or tea after your meal. I'll definitely be back. Highly recommend.

Food is amayzing! Very tasty and delicious! Beef and chicken were cooked perfectly. The best afghan food that I have ever eaten! The atmosphere is also amazing. Relaxing with nice decorations. The could have played a nice relaxing afghan or persian music to increase the authenticity. Overall very good. Price: its $$$ but worth it! Parking: hard to find, but there is a paid in the street next to the restaurant! Service; Staff were friendly but were not great.dishes were brought into table one by one, and it took 5 min to bring the last one. They could have brought it all together. they took my knife but never give another one, had to take it from another table. Water finish many times but didnt give us another one unless we asked 2 time. They keep moving around the dishes. Our table was too small, however we asked and they gave us a bigger table. I am saying all of these to just let them know that these things are happening, in overall we were very satisfied! Specially with atmosphere and the food! Will be definitely back! So its a 4.5 * restaurant (service could be improved) but there is no 4.5 option, so I give 4. Its not a 5 stars restaurant.

Authentic delicious food, amazing flavours. However we were forgotten a little, 30 minutes before someone came back to our table to take our order, and left with dessert menu another 20 minutes until close to closure. But otherwise the meal was faultless, dessert incredible and the Afghan tea was so spiced it was unlike anything I've tasted. Would definitely be back.

The food was really good with amazing vegeterian options. But my friend had a lamb curry with glass piece in it and it kind of killed the mood there . They did offer us a dessert attend of meal but still it was kinda mood killer. The service was nice but the prices are pretty steep.

My partner and I had the special banquet menu for $45 per person. Amazing for start to finish! We couldn't finish our mains, we were lucky to get them to go. Will definitely be back!

Last Thursday we celebrated my wife's birthday with our daughters and daughter's partner. The food was excellent. We had the Banquet and the service was excellent. We would come back again for another meal.

Very lovely service and great food👍👍👍

Food here is mediocre but what made it very good was the owners since of humour. Food was well presented and fresh but it was lacking care.

VERY tasty food in a quaint little restaurant. Nothing to extravagant but an enjoyable place to go for dinner for sure.

I ordered food and asked for beef qabuli pilaw i got served chicken instead. The waiter picked up dirty dishes from the customers and served other new customers with the forks using the same hands with out washing. I'm surprised this is happening.

Really average food , not really impressed. No flavour, taste everything same, rice was okay, food needs to be fresh and bring more flavour! Not coming back!

Delicious, hearty comfort food. Warm, caring, hospitable staff. Perfect for long, relaxing catch-ups. What more could you want?

vegeterian dishes are awesome, friendly staff and nice atmosphere, perfect for small group of friends

Love the good amount of delicious vegan options! Staff are helpful with letting us know what's vegan etc. One thing we ordered was the panear made vegan, which was absolutely delicious, though I'd like to see them use a vegan cottage cheese/make a vegan cottage cheese, instead of using bio cheese block as its nothing like that type of cheese. The prices are a bit expensive. Service was great and the place is nice.

Humble, modest and nourishing for the soul. Afghan Gallery is all about a good and honest dinner night out. We ordered the Sholla Gorbandi (rice, mung beans and my choice of cauliflower) and the Qorma Panir (rice with paneer stew) and it's everything we could've asked for; smooth sauce, tender vegetables and rice with a zing. But the best part of all is the service - it's homely, just like a second Mother. The fact they're Fitzroy's longest-standing restaurant speaks for itself.

If you didn't order any curry/soup based dish, you're in for a dry time.

Ordered:
🍢 Kebab Sultani: mixed kebab of my choice ($27.50)

Review:
With a central heap of rice to share, I was on my own with the kebab mix. Delicious smokey meats with the charcoal flavour... yum. But it all gets dry quick when all you have is sparse vegetables and rice to keep you going.

At one point I was desperate for more oil so I could have more liquid, and had to beg my friend for some of her curry soup to mix into my rice. I wish there was a yoghurt or a sauce on the side to make it a much more delicious experience.

Interior was flooded with yellow light which makes the food look warm, but also very enclosing. Can't say my experience at Afghan Gallery was great, but I would be open to giving them another try - ensuring I get a "liquid" dish on the next round.

This place is quintessential Fitzroy - quirky, homely, cozy and unpretentious. I can here with my family for birthday dinner, the atmosphere was buzzing, the service was wonderful and the food was utterly delicious! I can’t fault anything I ate it was all wonderful. Just to add icing on top of the cake - it’s BYO wine ;)

Delicious, authentic food and awesome service! Lovely night out.

Love love love Afghan Gallery!! Had such a lovely experience dining there with my mother & sister. The staff and ambience were both absolutely wonderful and the food.. man.. THE FOOD!! Glorious!! Will be back very soon I'm sure of it!!

As soon as you waltz in the door and you're surrounded by distinctive Afghani tribal décor, you know the Afghan Gallery Restaurant is a special place to dine. While not one of the more mainstream cuisines going around, it certainly merits a more mainstream place in the Melbourne dining circuit based on the food I've sampled here.

To start - the vegetable samosas and the Manfu meat dumplings. The former were relatively run of the mill, but the latter were very different from anything I've had: tasty and pleasant in texture, making a very satisfying starter. In fact it is the one dish that stands out most when I think of the night we dined here.

Mains were a mixture of mixed kebabs (sensational), and Chicken Qandahari (also excellent). I would describe these dishes as more homely, less spicy and yet more fragrant versions of sub-continental and other regional foods - different and definitely worth trying. I understand that upstairs has a different dining experience from downstairs as well. Whether it's for upstairs or downstairs, I'll be back either way.

Fantastic service and we were made to feel right at home. The food was good, although the eggplant dish we had as entree wasn’t as flavourful as we have had at our regular Afghan restaurant we frequent and in comparison was a little bit bland. The beef curry and lamb yoghurt dish were fantastic though and the serving sizes were very generous. Would not hesitate to visit again.
Quince And Cheese
Came here late on night and heard some passersby talking about how they'd been coming for decades - a good sign. I'd never had Afghani cuisine, which I've likened somewhat to North Indian with a rustic twist (at least as far as the vegetarian options are concerned). The service was slow (waited a while to receive water and menus after sitting, and a while again to order) but it can be attributed to the one lone but very nice server (and I assume owner) operating the restaurant. To start, I ordered a large garlic dahl which was very moreish and served with a dense, wholemeal nan, plus a small eggplant dish served on pita and topped with scattered lentils. The main was my favourite - a panir in an oil-based spinach and lentil gravy. The panir chunks were very large and soft compared to the small, firm varieties I've eaten in palak paneer. I think I prefer this take. If you're in the mood for a hearty meal, patient enough to linger over a BYO wine or wait on the slow service, and up for chats with the owner, I recommend this spot.

OMG!! I never tried Afghanis food so didn't expect much. I was thinking maybe it is similar to Indian? NO WAY! This restaurant served amazing dishes! Try bean soup with spices. None of these dishes were heavy or greasy. I ordered 7 dishes.. so.. I had to take away some.. lol I absolutely loved every single food here. I am going to come back here with my vegetarian friend! 😍
Whalesfoodadventure
Got the eggplant curry and goats curry. Tasted really good! Eggplant curry had big chunks of eggplant. Amazing flavours! Great service here also

Went for the banquet and enjoyed every course! The Chicken Kandahari and Lamb Korma were standouts. The chicken curry had a delectable smoky flavour and the lamb was beautifully tender. They went really well with the Kabuli Polow, which was moreish on its own. Lovely dessert platter to cap off a hearty meal. Amazing value!

I’ve been to Afghan gallery a few times. The food is good and upstairs setting is pretty cool. The only problem I see with this place is that it’s poorly maintained.
Daniel Wirjoprawiro
A local Fitzroy classic with the tastiest curries and best service. I’m slowly becoming a regular - highly recommended!

Best with a group so you can try the range of dishes. My personal favourite is the the Kofta meatballs. The novelty of Afghan cuisine is also a sure fire hit with the crowd!

Had a great time - the waiter really wanted to stay and chat, he was so funny and friendly. Couldn’t get enough of the spinach. Had a good perona.

Had never tried afghan food until this evening
Easy to book via quandoo
Friendly efficient quick staff
Parking is tough in their neighbourhood

Some Dishes on menu sound familiar and very Indian like korma, firnee and samosa possibly due to cultural influences
Food is not spicy and very mild

Not flavoursome enough for me and lacked oomph

Main Portion sizes are for one and not to share

All mains come with yellow coloured rice
Afghani naan bread is whole meal and very thick. Doesn’t taste like Indian naan bread but more like healthy bread.

Their curries are watery with oil floating on top. Not thick and gravy like

Glad I tried it but won’t be rushing back
Casey Nole
The best food!!!
So tasty.
If you want food packed full-of-flavour you have to try this place out.
While a bit on the pricey side I think it's definitely worth it.
The atmosphere in the place is quite warm and cozy. Can get a bit noisy (as you would expect) on Friday and Saturday evenings."
Nathan Grimaldi
Place looked nice enough and other tables seemed to be getting served however my partner and i waited nearly an hour and a half for our starter. To make matters worse the couple we were with ordered the exact same dishes and never received there food. Unfortunate because the starter was actually good but with the time we waited, definitely not worth it.
Hello. Imnikki
A wonderful introduction to Afghan cuisine with Timinmelbourne and his partner. Being all unfamiliar with Afghan cuisine, we decided to order the banquet menu so that we wouldn't have to worry about choosing a dish.

A hearty selection of entrees, grilled meat, bread, rice and both vegetarian and meat curries arrived on our table in quick succession.

We enjoyed all the dishes but what really stood out for me were the chicken curry and cauliflower curry. The sauce was rich and flavourful, with hints of spices present throughout. The chicken was wonderfully moist and tender, and cauliflower was soft but yet firm to bite.

We ended the night with coffee and a very lovely dessert - a rosewater and cardamon custard. It was light and silky, and I'm sure I could eat more than one serve!

The service was incredibly charming and friendly, and matches the homely and cosy vibe of the place perfectly.
Timinmelbourne
My partner met Bearabbit and her partner here tonight for dinner.

Initially we were warmly greeted by the waiter and shown to our table. This place is BYO wine which is excellent.

For dinner we shared a banquet of food as some of us weren’t entirely familiar with Afghan food... i.e me hahaha

We shared a mixed entree of vegetarian and non vegetarian options which were delicious. For
mains we had a number of curries including chicken beef and lamb. They were all moorish but I really enjoyed the spinach dish ... yummo!

This restaurant has a number of gluten free options too. The banquet finished w a milk based dessert and a very very strong coffee.... which is why I am
still awake at ...???? OMGosh!!! Hahahaha

This is a lovely place to visit for an outstanding meal w excellent service. Definitely worth a visit but go hungry as the banquet is a lot of food.
Spice Up Your Life
Really enjoy coming back to this place, the owner remembers us every time, which gives the restaurant a very family vibe. Upstairs is a beautiful area decorated with Afghan designs, rugs and furniture.
Would recommend the Kabouli Palow. I ordered the ash (Afghan soup) and eggplant curry which was a bit too oily for me.

Unassuming little dinner spot on Brunswick Street. Service is unique and delightful. Menu is varied and easy to find something for everyone. Absolutely delicious dishes and relaxed atmosphere - and BYO which is a bonus. We didn’t eat upstairs, but if you book ahead, you can experience a more authentic dining experience. Would definitely recommend!

The food is not authentic Afghani food. Those who have tasted real Afghan food know how bad this restaurant’s food is. Also, it’s v expensive. My friend and I ordered something for $40 but we were charged $80 at the end. We were told that we were served extra food, that we didn’t even order. Please be careful!
Rinny Wang
Just be here to try something different.order few dishes recommended by owner. My friend like the food Full of spice aroma but not my type.not recommend the dessert.
Gursharan Chana
Nice kebabs in a warm and friendly environment. The mince meat kebab's and rice are particularly good. Definitely worth a try, would score higher if it weren't for other really good kebab places around.
Melb_Belly
Amazing food with amazing staff.

Could not fault any of the dishes. The rice was cooked perfectly, meat was all tender and juicy. Everything had excellent flavour. Even the bread served was soft and fluffy.

The highlight were the mantoos. Delicious flavour and amazing texture. Highly recommend them.

Every staff member were friendly and accommodating, even the workers in the kitchen were friendly through the peep hole.
Tara Nath
Came here for dinner with a friend and we loved it! This was my first time trying Afghani cuisine. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The food is very flavoursome and reasonably priced! I love that they have lots of options for vegetarians and vegans. I will be back the next time I’m in Melbourne.
Shiv
Amazing place for a quiet dinner or a family or friends catch ups/celebrations as well.

The owner and staff are friendly and welcoming. The food is simply out of this world especially the Dal and the Chicken Kandahari.

The guys clearly know what they are doing and that shows through in the terrific hospitality and quality of food.

Everything about this place is wonderful!
Ramp It Up
Small step. Appropriate for manual wheelchairs. The waiters organised some wood planks to make shift a ramp for us. Next time we'll bring our own small ramp. No specific wheelchair accessible bathroom but there is a larger toilet that can be used by a manual chair.

Such genuine accommodating service. The food was delicious! We booked for 8 and could've fit multiple chairs. We went off peak (a Sunday night) and it was fairly quiet.

We had a mix of meat, vegetarian and vegan meals. All wonderful! We recommend!!

While trying to find somewhere to eat before meeting up with my mates i happened upon this little gem. Really great service with a smile and very friendly staff. The food was quite delicious the spicy spinach and rice seems so simple but so good 👌

I can't fault this place - every time I've been I've had the best meals and amazing flavours.
Last time we went my boyfriend and I shared two mains and 2 entrees, just to try to get as much deliciousness as possible! The portions sizes are great value, so we did have quite a bit left while full - had to squeeze it in!
Great dips with a beautiful depth of flavour and yummy fresh bread. Samosas were full of fresh, juicy vegetables and delightfully crunchy. Lamb Qorma (and all of the lamb dishes) are amazing - meat is so tender, sauce is rich, full of subtle hints of different flavours. Sholla Gorbandi is also a standout.
Staff are so friendly and if it's a quiet night you can hear some great stories and beautiful insights.
Kate Louise Macfarlane
Fantastic food, friendly service, will definitely be back. The vegetarian mains were deliciously, delicately spiced and the ashak for entree were simply superb.
Adam
Great food and service from the staff. I'll definitely being coming back soon. I'd recommend the mixed entrees. The atmosphere was nice and it's great that it was BYO

I love this place! Best lamb skewers - kebab barg. The portion is generous served with rice. The owner is very lovely and humble, always up for a chat whenever I have visited. My go to place for chunky grilled lamb skewers- it's perfectly cooked and just delicious.
Prashanth Sam Nallathamby
The moment you step in you are struck by the rustic Afghan decor and warm hospitality of the host. The menu is well thought out and a great representation of the culinary culture of Afghanistan.
The portions are very generous and great value for money.
Make sure you try out a Kebab for the main . The Sheerpera dessert is nothing like I have ever tasted before - make sure you order some.
Brijesh Munyal
fantastic food .. ambiance 4/5 food .. 4.5/5 quantity 4.5/5.. Rice with Lamb is a must try mince lamb kebab must try.. and its a value for money location
James Raftkis
My mouth waters just thinking about the food. It was just delicioussss. Service was made even better when I got a $50 chargeback from Liven App. Am I lucky or what? I plan to eat here everyday if I could!
Chris Priestley
I have been coming here for many years and many reviews say this places hasn't changed and to their credit they haven't and that's a good thing. Always loved the food and always love the character and friendliness of the staff.
Sharna
Came back here last night after a couple years of not being to this resteraunt, safe to say nothing has changed. The food is still as good as I remember, and the staff are extremely friendly and love to have a joke. The food is also cheap for what you get, you definitely won't be leaving hungry.
Alli Browning
We ordered the eggplant dish and the daal - both were excellent. What I loved about this place is that it was not the usual loud and frenzied dining experience that you often get on Brunswick Street. This place is one where you can hear each other talk. The wait staff are polite, softly spoken and prompt on service. What you'll get is delicious authentic food in a calm environment. This is no hipster joint and it's loveable for that factor. Good wholesome food, good service, good vegan and GF options. Thumbs up!
MelbfoodCritic
First when we went in there we were greeted by an Afghan guy. We ordered mince kebab style dish, chicken with rice Afghan style dish. It had that authentic style of flavours however nothing super excited about food. Something you would get in an ordinary style takeaway joint. Interior was nice. Rugs handing on the walls & upstairs lounge was really nice for a group of people to hang out. Owner was very nice & showed us upstairs. Good service+++ overall rating 3.7*
Inostram
What a treat... good food, tasty entree, spicy, not hot... and a varied selection... the chef made a great choice! Then the main with the succulent lamb, Dahl and fragrant rice! Yum! Friendly staff... entertaining... come and enjoy!

Highly recommended by friends . Thought I'd finally give it a go . Glad we did . Owner is a nice man and was happy to explain the menu . I really enjoyed the food , visited the restaurant late Tuesday night, it wasn't busy so serving time was good , food arrived not too quick to suggest microwaved food ...So happy there .
Rice was lovely very aromatic and fresh , chicken yogurt curry lovely texture , melt in your mouth chicken and nice authentic flavoured curry sauce. The lamb curry was good too , a little fatty but lamb usually is nice amount of heat / spice . We thoroughly enjoyed the entrees too . We found the meals good size and reasonable priced

Service : 5/5
Food : 5/5

I liked the music in the background , the owner and staff spoke their native language when in communication to one another which to me is a plus and the owner ate some food prepared by the chefs for what I presume was his dinner , it's good to see they cook , eat and speak their passions at the afghan gallery .

Would I personally Recommend? : yes ! I Will be back :) to try more yummy authentic afghani food .
Preetraj Sethi
The taste of the food was really nice but there was only one problem. There was a hair in one of the dishes. Other than that the service was okay. Not shore if I will be back
Renee Chan
I love this place - the ambience, the charming Pashtun owner who told us stories about Afghanistan while serving us delicious mantu
If you've never tried afghan food this is the place to get your introduction

I don't know of a place in Melbourne with a cozier atmosphere than the Afghan Gallery. The food and service is fantastic, and the owners are great people.
Tim Priestley
I've been coming to the Afghan Gallery for many years, in fact my first time was when I was 13 years. Now in my late 30's, this place is still the same, the service is among the best and most friendliest I've even come across and experienced. The food is always brilliant and ever so tasty, the setting still the same as when I was young and makes you feel your in some Afghan setting.
I still go often, and see many people look in the window at the menu and I think, If only they knew what they'd be missing out on if they don't come in'...

I recommend it to all people I know, family, friends and anybody I know who appreciates good food...
You'd be doing yourself an injustices not trying this place....
Ginny
Loved it. Great vegetarian options. The eggplant main was to die for, completely silky and when paired with the yoghurt - amazing. The Chicken Kebab was HUGE, enough for two people.Very friendly staff :)
Matt Rosamilia
Amazing place. We have been coming here for years and it only gets better and better. Plenty of vegan and vegetarian options.
Could be one of our favourites on Brunswick St and a much better alternatives to the places in dandenong

First time eating Afghan food... very impressed! The yoghurt lamb and flavoured rice went well with the chef special entree platter. Recommend to anyone who hasn't tried it before! very friendly and warm staff, cozy and quaint atmosphere. nice music!!!!
Out And About
Established in the 1980s as a project to support Afghani refugees and immigrants this has the makings of a strong ethical foundation. We enjoyed a delicious paneer cheese curry and a tasty eggplant curry. The service was genuine and kind. The space was cool with some traditional seating arrangements and you can't help but imagine being in a very different place.
Sofie Angel
Really yummy dips and perfectly barbecued kebabs. The waiters are entertaining. Lots of meat on the menu so don't go there looking for veggies.
Dina Kerr
Afghani food is excellent. But not at this place. The rice which is a national afghan speciality isn't even fresh. The sizes are ridiculously small and the presentation is so poor. Desserts were a disappointment and the waiter had no idea how to describe them. Not impressed.
Simon Lord
Appalling. No service: forgotten drinks orders, slow food arrival, clueless on cutlery and glassware. Bland, overpriced food. ($17 for basically chicken & rice!?) Nan bread was chewy, tasteless dough. Decor upstairs is tacky and seating is uncomfortable. I don't want to sledge any restaurant, but this place deserves it.
Dined Saturday evening, Aug 1, upstairs, in a group.
Tracey.martin
Foodie. Have been to this restaurant a few times each time we loved it the food was really good, so was the service never had afghan food before we went here so I was pleasantly surprised the ambience was great. Well be going back and have recommended this restaurant to a few people who have tried it
Vivi S
Private functions can be booked upstairs at Afghan Gallery. With curtains and lights hanging from all four walls, this would make for a special event! My housemates love this restaurant and come often. The owner is a lovely man, who also sponsors Afghan kids for better education.
Melbourne Lifestyle Blog
Despite the busy streets outside, Afghan Gallery Restaurant had only two tables filled. On top of that, their CD player loudly filled the space with clam traditional music, which was a bit too relaxing for us after the rush of finding a last minute place
Melbourne Glutton
Overall, I quite liked this quaint little place and it's definitely worth a try. Even if it is just to experience the novelty of Afghan cuisine.
Murrayhead
Pretty solid food, wouldn't say it was the most mind-blowing I've tasted but definitely worthwhile, the dahl being the highlight. Also certainly unique in that there aren't too many Afghani restaurants around. Extra marks for the great sense of humour the waiters and manager displayed, as well as the relaxed decor.

Just delicious. I love the rice here!! It's flavourful and delicious and goes so well with everything on the menu. I especially enjoy the kebabs and their boneless chicken in yoghurt dish. YUM!
Never had a problem with staff, they're always so friendly and accommodating. Will return, time and time again.

Good Food but Better Value for Money Elsewhere. Food was nice but servings are not huge - supposedly designed to be enough for one person rather than allowing e.g. 3 or 4 people to share 2 or 3 dishes.

Waiter was very friendly. Service was reasonably fast although there weren't many people there.

Chicken Kebab was the best of the meals presented compared to a couple of the curries we ordered
Monica
Came here the other night with a large group of people and this place was the biggest rip off. Paid $38 per person to share a small entree plate amongst 3 other people. Next the mains come out served on the smallest plates, and not even $38 worth.

The service was awful too. Waited over an hour and a half for the entrees; and had to get my own water after anxiously waiting for drinks that long. The man serving us was rude. He started talking Chinese and then french to us?! I don't know if he was trying to be funny, but it just made us all more pissed off.

The food quality was ok. Again, not worth the money you pay for and definitely nothing special.
Anastasiya P
Not that cheap for pretty average food.microwaved pita!?. Well, I cant say it was bad. It s already good, cos I am very picky with food.
Also, I can make better at home.
Kebabs tasted good but were dry.
MUST order with yogurt or salad which we didnt, our bad.
Bread felt as tho it was microwaved.
Fizzy bottled drinks were poured in advance and brought out to us in half filled cups instead of opening them in our presence (!!!!)
Prices call for better quality, too, considering that we dined on paper table 'cloths'.
Either they should become cheaper or make food better.
Yet it s a nice looking quiet place, one of the few of its kind in the hipster area of Brunswick st.
I'd give it a 6.5-7/10
Not the worst, especially considering that waiting time was short & service, was good & friendly.

Fantastic food. Best Dahl on Brunswick st. kind and friendly staff, great atmosphere, great prices. highly recommended.

Excellent Service, Delicious Meals & Outstanding Decor. I visited the Afgan Gallery for the first time last night and was thoroughly impressed. The service was exceptional, our food came out quickly..and was very tasty and the tent party upstairs is so impressive. What a hidden gem! I will definitely be returning soon. The restaurnt is licenced but also BYO so we were able to take in our own wine. Perfect!

Christie

Lamb lawand was great, rice was brown basmati and really nice, preferred the rice to the naan bread. Eggplant Qorma was delicious..friendly service. Would defiantly return!

Loveeee afghan gallery. All the food was amazing and pretty cheap.
All our meals came out fast aswell.
Friendly waiter aswell

Delicious and well priced. Mains are all around the $20 mark. Servings were generous and flavours were fresh and wholesome. The atmosphere is traditional and the service is friendly. Definitely recommend.

Tasty and a great experience overall. Hadn't been for 20 years. My daughter and I went out for dinner. Got a great front row seat to Brunswick st and watched the world go by. Food was really good, very subtle flavours, welcoming service which makes you feel at home. The kofta was great and we ended up with complementary desserts which were equally tasty. We will be back.

Went for a quick meal on a Sunday. Very welcoming staff - lovely service, ambience and food!

Felt like something different and this really hit the mark. Never had Afghani food before so it was nice surprise, for me it fell into the "comfort food" category being a lover of curries and other Middle Eastern food. Try the entre mixed plate for 2 or 3 for a good overall view of the style of food.
Amanda
Little Gem. I have been five times now with different friends each time and I just love it. The menu is small but varied and is reasonably priced. The food is exquisite and was cooked perfectly. The owner/manager was very friendly and helpful when asked about the menu.
Loveroffood
Really delicious authentic dishes with awesome flavours! A great aftertaste and guaranteed satisfaction at he end. The owner/manager and chef are extremely friendly. Have already come here twice and would return any time

Very disappointed, drove across the city just to eat here, 15 minutes to order another 30 mins to get our order and then 30 to find out our main dishes was never ordered in the first place, grumpy and hungry. Rated 3/10

I am in love with Afghan Gallery! Me and my partner are addicted to this place, we are now regulars. The food is so so delicious! I really cannot understand people's comments that the good was bland. We've been there more then twenty times and the food and customer service is consistent! Definitely worth a try!

Service was great! We had the lamb kebab and a chicken curry. Kebab needs some kind of accompaniment but was well cooked and tender. Nice experience!

A great choice if you want to try something different. Not a huge selection of vegie options, but what there is is lovely. Helpful and pleasant staff all happy to help with meal choices. Would love to go back and sit upstairs next time!

Amazing food. The flavours were incredible and really well balanced spices! I've tried a lot of Afghan food and this is my favourite!!
We got the Mantoo entree (like dumplings - pastry stuffed with meat), eggplant in yoghurt, dips and nan, lamb curry and chicken kebab.
I would highly recommend this place, it's always good to try something new!!

Fantastic food and everything.. The lamb kebab is just incredible...

Enjoyed a new experience. Good food, but they need to work on service skills!!! We could have been easily tempted by traditional desserts, but I think sitting upstairs reduced customer service dramatically!! A real shame...

Good food, poor service. Went there the first time for Father's Day. It was early during the night, the owner was very hospitable and brought out our food in decent time. The food was amazing.

Following this good experience, went there two more times with friends. I was really let down! Both times we had to wait for over 50mins for our mains AND entrees even after warning them that we were in a hurry to attend a Salsa class. Food is still not bad.

Only go there if you really want afghani food and have all night to waste.

Not a happy customer:My partner and I wanted to dine somewhere different. So we decided to try afghan food as my partner had heard from a friend that the food there was delicious. I have tried afghan food before at another restaurant in woodville and thought the food was amazing so I thought it would be a great idea as he has never experienced the food before and my last experience tells me the food was great. So off we went. We got there and we were immediately given a table with menu's so we decided to have the feast for 2 people which involves a 5 course meal. We ordered and approx 15 minutes later we are served our entree. Entree was dumplings which were were nice but seemed like they were microwaved as one i had was partially cold and warm. Anyway we wait for our second meal which was a "kebab" We waited 50 minutes before we got our so called "kebab" only to find that some packet salad was put on the plate with 6 small meat patties and a small yogurt dip in the middle with 6 thin flat breads. Main meal came with a plate of rice, with some sort of chicken curry and also a beef curry. Chicken curry was below average in flavour and the beef had all beef nerves on it which made it chewy and unpleasant to eat. By the end of the main meal my partners experience of afghani food was quite negative. I had mentioned to him that the food that we had was no where near afghani food. We decided to leave after the main meal and did not finish the last 2 courses. we were walking back to the car and we thought that the experience was so bad that a pizza from wollies would of been way better.Note to self. Never go back there for afghani food.

Whole in your pocket. Amazing Afghan food. The range of kebabs and kabuli rice were sensational. However, a bit pricey.

Really enjoyed dinner here, lovely atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. Drinks were reasonably priced and the food was delicious. I went with a small group and we shared 1 entree, 2 mains, a vegetarian dish and a salad, which was the perfect amount. My favorite was the Chicken Makhanwala.

Not impressed. I was recommended this place by friends but unfortunately I wasn't impressed at all. The service was nil. The entrees were re-heated and chewy when they shouldn't have been. The curry wasn't disgusting but it was very bland. I was looking forward to trying a new cuisine but for us nothing at all stood out about this place and I am sorry but I cant recommend it.

I didn't know what to expect About this place, it looked a bit shady - but I was really blown away! Food was great, especially the meatballs and the sweets. If there wasn't a war going on there, I would defs go to Afghanistan to eat more of this stuff! Luckily j have this place in theean time!
Bimbii
Delicious food, really hospitable & friendly service & great cosy atmosphere. Will DEF be back!

Aunauthentic flavours, very high prices. save ur money and go to Reza kebab in sydney rd, or even better Salang on Dandenong! Afghan gallery is also changed and caters for an 'Aussie' taste, which isnt a good thing...Go to salang and u will see what I mean...Wast of money if u go here

Doesnt cease to amaze me how easily impressed people are. Most afghans would tell you, the food here is rather average. Indeed afghan food in melbourne is not mainstream, so there are few real competitors out there. Cant say this was a memorable experience at all.

Delicious rich flavours at reasonable prices. Beautiful traditional ambiance with warm service. We had a lovely Sunday late evening meal here and would return again.
Good Taste
Tasty & Consistent. Walked past this many times before I finally stepped in this place two years back. As a local who likes good consistent food, this place ticks all the boxes. Our very friendly and worldly waiter is always up for a chat and the food is very tasty and satisfying. Never had a bad experience in dozens of visits whether eating in or taking away.

Two of our meals didn't come out and one of the orders was wrong. The food was alright if not ridiculously overpriced for what it was. Nothing above average and didn't sense that it was very authentic, lacking any real identifiable 'afghani' flavour. Owner is completely over the top with his phony 'friendly' persona.

Divine Food Fantastic Service. Having lived just off Brunswick St for over 10 years, I am kicking myself over missing out on a decade of fine food! Haven't experienced this level of service in my time as a local and the food was incredible. Miced entree, Chicken w/ yogurt and a lamb grill with rice was more than enough for two hearty eaters and my mouth is watering just thinking about it! Welcoming service from engaged and attentive staff. Looking forward to coming back again...and again!

We were so lucky to get the amazing little room that was decorated with cushions and carpet and a tent... it felt like a Moroccan igloo!
The lamb and chicken kebabs were ridiculously amazing, we were fighting over the last piece! The mixed platter of entrees were sensational; especially the eggplant and some pastry thing with spinach and ricotta. Rice was plentiful, so was the naan bread; everything we ate was fantastic!
Service was prompt and very attentive, the manager kept coming in to check on us and was so friendly and funny.
Great place for dates, family get- togethers, dinner with friends/ work and birthdays. Definitely going back again!

Great tasty food, lovely staff, super ambiance. A new regular!

This place has friendly staff with excellent food. Cosy ambience great for a winter night out.

This place used to be a favourite, but unfortunately the quality of the Afghan Gallery has really deteriorated recently. The food is pleasant but the quality seems to be going backwards. Still rated a solid 3, but it's not what it used to be.

Loved the cosy relaxed atmosphere.
We went with friends and we all really enjoyed the set menu which was quite reasonably priced. The food was hearty and very homely. The staff were friendly and we didn't get kicked off our table after two hours like most resturants these days. We had a great night at afghan gallery

We had a group of 16, fior a birthday paid $30, with no desert and no where near enough food for so many people! Complete disappointment!!

Its the sex. Without sounding completely biased to this restaurant, Afghan Gallery has got to be one of best places I've dined. The food was exotic, the service was great, prices reasonable and it leaves you talking about the experience you've just enjoyed for hours to come. Its exotic, adventurous and the is menu completely other worldly to anything you'll ever try. My recommendations from memory ;The Lamb Quorva and the an Eggplant dish i can't remember. A definite winner
Karma Clarke
Lovely food- slightly overpriced. But still, a great place with welcoming staff.

I ate here tonight with my boyfriend, food was amazing! We had the chicken and lamb kebab's, the eggplant entree and the Dahl absolutely delicious food came out very quickly and waiter was very friendly, gr8 wine list....so glad we tried it after reading mixed reviews. We will definitely be back.....I definitely recommend
Vanilla
Ok for something different, cosy atmosphere & love head guys leather vest! Portions on the small side & the mixed entree is a great way to taste different items of chefs choice. If new to the Afgahn cuisine this would be a safe place to try.

Different but Good. We booked a table upstairs for a birthday dinner after hearing good things. If you are going here i recommend asking for a table upstairs as there is a real authentic feel and comfy low couches and tables make it a better night out! Downstairs are more traditional tables. The sole waiter was good value and had a laugh throughout the night. Although he did disappear downstairs for long periods and when we wanted something we had to wait a while for him to return.
We ordered the Banquet No. 1 at $38 per person. First up we had 4 different entrees with a small basket of toasted bread (they needed to give a bit more i think). The entrees were very good though. A mixture of flavours - eggplant, vegie somosas, and 2 others that while i didn't know what they were they tasted amazing.
Next course was a beef rissole type dish. There were about 3 or 4 pieces each and when paired with the yoghurt dipping sauce it was very satisfying - amazing flavours again.
For mains we received long grain rice, a chicken dish, a lamb dish, spinach and chickpea dish and a marinated pea dish. The meats were so tender. The spinach looked a bit different but had a moreish effect. I loved the marinated pea dish -unexpectedly nearly the pick of the bunch. All mains went down well and there was plenty to go around.
Dessert was a miss, with a milky, sticky rice custard like dish topped with pistachio shavings served up. It was pretty bad and we only had a couple of teaspoons each. We then ordered some ice cream that we had seen kids on the next table eating and it definitely topped us off.
I would encourage people to come here as it really was a great evening in an authentic environment - you don't feel like your in Melbourne. They also have BYO wine which was a bonus.

Wonderful. I love the atmostphere, seating arrangement and food. I felt like I was beamed to another country instantly. Will be back.

Nice. Did me a treat and hit the spot
Thats The Way I Like It
Had a late dinner here tonight with a friend.the waiter was very friendly and answered our questions about the items on the menu.simple menu.entree was nice, we got the large mantoo.for main we got lamb in yoghurt sauce, very tender and nice dish. We also ordered a chicken pilaf, that was nice.this place is worth a try, not too expensive, not too spicy either.
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
Great food and great wine list to match the food. Excellent value and tasty food. Found the lamb kofta on the drier side but everything else was yummy. Highy recommend the mixed entree plate.

AMAZING!!. It was so good, It is a different experience but a good one! So relaxed. Delicious food great time food takes long but worth it
MelbourneEater87
Not bad, not great. This place seems to have gone downhill in the last few years. Food is still delicious and great value, but service is pretty terrible. No one is expecting to be doted on in a cheap BYO joint, but having to find our own menus and chase down the waiter was a bit much. Not terrible... but probably won't be going back anytime soon.

Lovely food. Small servings. Staff were friendly but slow and not very attentive. Recommended for a casual night out if your not in a rush!
Saris
Be careful of your bill. Had a party on saturday night and with their smile they attempted to add more than what we had.Clearly tried to overcharge us.They have lost us and all our 46 guests, never again will I walk in this place , I will not tolerate getting "ripped off"
JD
Meuh. Service was inattentive and slow, food was very average and overpriced. Always has people in it though, maybe they're all first timers, or they just see something I don't.

The Turkish coffee was fantastic. The lamb kofta was slightly dry and the curry certainly wasn't 'saucy' enough.the atmosphere however is relaxed and the knick knacks are quite adorable.
Anthony Ciavarella
Only occasionaly. Food is really delicious but there is not really enough for what you are paying and service doesn't really exist.
Mr. White
Rather yummy. I didn't know exactly what to expect on my first venture into the world of afghan gastronomy, and I've come out the other side quite delighted. Every dish tasted was interesting at least, and absolutely delicious at best. The service was friendly and the ambiance enjoyable. The Afghan Gallery doesn't produce "fine food", and it's not sensational value, but I'd happily return for another sitting.
Suse
Really disappointed. Surprisingly Bland cold dishes. Some type of pasta dish that was really disinteresting and what seemed like dry reheated samosas. Really small servings for way too much money. This place is over rated and a bit of a rip off really.

Macaroni?. I feel ambivalent about writing a negative review for Afghan Gallery because the owner is so ebullient, but I can't ignore the fact that we were served cold macaroni shells during our vegetarian banquet.

Cold, bland, MACARONI. Seriously, is this Afghan food? Is it a political statement ... military rations?
Nom Nom Nom
Never going back. I went for a birthday with 12 or so friends and were convinced by the waitress to order a banquet rather then the separate meals we were intending to order.

The food ranged from good, to ok to bland and poorly cooked. The service was disdainful and the the banquet was barely enough for half of us to eat a decent meal.

In the end one of my friends spoke quietly with the manager about the lack of food and they sent out a few bowls of dry, undercooked rice and some dip. When my friend appealed to them that this wasn't acceptable the manager got very aggressive. We gave up and left feeling unsatisfied and ripped off by shoddy operators.

Never again Afghan Gallery - there are plenty of much better options in town!
Melissa
Rustic but not the food.... Not a place I recommend taking date, or meeting the in-laws, it's more of a can't find a place to eat, let's try here. Do not pass go, do not order the Chef's entree special, if you must have a starter, go for the eggplant. Otherwise, stick with water. Mains, nothing spectacular, the right flavors are there but it's not anything to ties your tongue in a knot. The dessert made it for me, the baklava was not sickly sweet but light and well textured and the cardamon rose-water pastry, well it was like biting into a warm spring day.
Suedy
Great expectations. I had heard amazing things about this restaurant and was very excited to go there for dinner. Sadly though, we found the food a bit bland and the serving sizes shockingly small for the price tag. What a shame.
Loz
Yum yum yum. Love the banquet, especially the pea dish. Great fun upstairs with a group.
Carley Ludlow
Great food, very authentic!!
Jess
Service is very friendly, even if you do have to seek out the waiters yourself sometimes! Food is delicious, love the banquets, and great atmosphere for groups upstairs.
Catrina
Delicious food and the staff were really friendly. It was my sisters birthday and they brought her out a plate of all different deserts with a candle in it! And the meat was really good quality! Sometimes you can go to an indian restaurant and the chicken is squishy and purple. But their chicken and lamb were the best quality ever!! I loved everything!
Sean Hibberd
We found the food and service fantastic! Our waiter was extremely helpful, polite and well presented. We read Ness' review previously and found people who were ubrupt to our waiter had to wait longer. The food was delicious and came in good time. A her enjoyable dining experience.
Ness
I went here one night with some mates. It took us 20 minutes to get drink service, one hour to get entrée and another hour to get mains, this was while everyone else who was seated after us was served before us. When I complained to the manager he said that the chef had called in sick, when I pointed out that this did not effect anyone else's meal I was told to deal with it! All in all not very impressive, service basically non existant, food was ok but not worth the 2 and a half hour wait. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone
