Review Trippy Taco - Fitzroy

Angel Khong
Trippy Taco was popular for their Mexican vegetarian/vegan meals. Their food was fresh, well-portioned, and quite flavourful especially the French fries. However the venue was uncomfortably small and tight, and service was so slow that we waited an hour for our food.
Fitzroy Forager
Sunny space & friendly staff delivering fresh, vibrant & tasty Mexican dishes & drinks. Not huge portions so definitely worth ordering a few things, but the quality is on point. Loved the nachos & cheeeeesy quasadillas!
Emma Brooks
Delicious burritos and the staff were incredible helpful and friendly! The rating would be 5 stars but sadly the fries didn’t quite match the amazing standard of the burritos. But definitely worth a visit if your in town

I was misguided by the reviews, it was not good at all. I have ordered Burrito and Nachos and they both were bad. The Tufo Nachos was smell of burnt oil and the Burrito was only full of Black Beans. There was not even enough verity of Mexiacan souce to use.

Dropped in here on a ‘let’s try here’ whim, and so glad we did. Everything we had was awesome. The sangria was fruity, punchy and had a great depth of flavour. Trippy corn, Special Quesadilla and Original Trippy Tacos with black beans all super delicious, extremely generous fillings and punchy flavours, dripping with juices down our hands in all the best ways. Definitely a winner that I’d come back to time and again if I lived in Melbourne

I've been going to Trippy for the past 5+ years, and sadly the quality of the food & value for money has dropped quite a bit as of the past year. The mixed burrito was always my favourite goto, now it's no longer as well wrapped and the grilled/charred tofu doesn't bite as it used to. The salad/salsa they use now includes pickles? It's nowhere near as fresh as it used to be... Where have you gone trippy?! 😭

Food was delicious, good sized portions, quick service and food came out fast, all the staff were lovely, is hard to find good quality vegetarian/vegan food and this place definitely delivered that! Would eat here again was happy with all, can’t wait to try the desserts next time
Kiki
Friendly staff but below average tacos... was soggy and blend had to keep adding chilli sauce lol. Expected something much better for the price. And when you tagged yourself vegan food, you shall do it better otherwise ppl will think that vegan food taste blend like this... Also not sure on the hygiene part, looked like the dish washer missed out on this poor water bottle...was really not appetising.

They serve the best food in the whole world. If I had the money I'd travel to Melbourne from Germany only for one of those super tasty Special Quesadillas with a side of these unique and extremely delicious fries. If I could, I would eat there every single day until I die. If I were you, I'd go there immediately.

It seems every time I go to a Mexican place I leave thinking I can make better at home. Also it's not acceptable to play the entire Kings Wood album while your customers dine. I couldn't leave quick enough to get away from that horrible whiny racket.
Rebecca Green
I've been a long faithful customer of Trippy Taco but the last time I went 2 weeks ago I got a take away chocolate and banana melt. I got it home and it had dairy chocolate and not the vegan chocolate I ordered. I rang to let them know, gave them my contact details and left it up to them to do what they felt was appropriate. Which to date is nothing at all. Disappointing.

Simply amazing food!!! Taco's were awesome, the menu contains really creative vegetarian dishes that taste great!!!

Went to the Saint Kilda store. The food was cold and the chips were soggy and had way too much seasoning on them. Was really looking forward to trying this place but was rather disappointed ;(
Penelope Hardy
Amazing food and the waitress gave my dog some water which was sweet(:
Liarne Clarke
Fantastic Mexican!! Went there for dinner but had to leave and was forced to leave some of my burrito!! I never waste food, especially not food that great! Will definitely be going back!
Miles Davis
Hey my burrito was cold as hell fries were soggy as shit too
Neats Frank
The most amazing vegan burrito ever!!!! Always look forward to a trippy taco vegan burrito with vegan cheese-delicious!
Nicole Nicole
Thankyou for the best freaking Mexican since San Francisco. Extra points for the vegan option. x

Can you please start up a delivery service Trippy X X

I usually love trippy taco but just placed an Order for takeaway that included the tamale dessert and the syrup was so badly packaged that it leaked through the container, through the bag, all over my car's carpet, all my other food and then my phone and legs when I tried to stop it going everywhere. I got a refund but I've still wasted 30 minutes and now have to go home and scrub sticky syrup off of my car:(
Kateriina Frolova
AMAZING!!! We had nachos and a mixed burrito. The portions are big and good value and the food is delicious!! Definitely worth trying out! Also the atmosphere is really nice as cosy:)
Jovana Subotic
The vegan tamales is so good! Love the name :)

Ordered a bean and cheese burrito

Got ONLY beans and cheese in the burrito

Tried to get a store credit for another burrito with no response. Pretty crap if you ask me!
Jerrin Reji
Terrible food with extreme oily consistency. Oil was literally dripping down the fingers. Sangria was way too bitter to drink and overall food flavor was awful. I’m pretty sure Mex food isn’t anywhere close to what we had just now. Extremely disappointed.
George Yi
Very disappointed with the service. The burrito I ordered had marker pen drawn onto it because there seemed to be a crack in the protective foil, and there was a clear line of marker ink on the burrito wrap itself. When I showed the waitress, she never apologised, didn’t offer a discount or refund, and I had to insist on having a new one made, by saying that I didn’t want to eat marker pen ink. The re-made burrito was also significantly smaller than the original one. They also served the wrong burrito to the friend I was dining with. Perhaps the key is to ask the chef to use a better way to determine which recipe to cook (rather than marker pen) when you order, to avoid catastrophe; and for wait staff to be trained that marker pen is not food safe.
Ninilovesfood
Lovely place! Love the vegetarian spin on mexican food. Love the tofu tacos! And taquitos! Not a fan of black bean taco tbh they were quite dry.
The selection of sauces is quite good! Will come back!
Luke Natoli
Food was just boring lacking flavour. Front door slams every single time someone walks

I have come past this place so many times and finally, my regular dining buddies chose it for our catchup dinner. It’s a funky little (as in small space inside) restaurant but big on popularity. There is seating outside on the pavement which is popular with dog owners, families or just people wanting to enjoy the lifestyle of Fitzroy / Collingwood.
Menu is extensive and caters for all tastes and dietaries. Vegetarians and vegans can be assured of a variety of choices here. A jug of sangria is $20 and there is enough for two drinks for four people. I had the double tofu asada with grilled tofu which was plenty for me.
Portion sizes are generous. Service is fast. Kid friendly. Wheelchair accessible (but only just). Trippy Taco do a cracking take away business here as well. Parking is okay after 6pm otherwise the trams are good.

2.5/5
I’ve wanted to visit trippy tacos for a while now so when my partner suggested it off we went.

The service was alright I guess. Food wise we ordered some different dishes and they were really average. There was no spice, the chips were lukewarm and they lacked any flavour even w some additional powder on top. Gosh.

The tacos were ok I guess, but they were missing something to make them exciting.

The margaritas were good though, and they packed a punch lol

Overall though, this was a really expensive meal for some pretty average food.

Great food and vibe :)

Triply taco turned out to be a huge disappointment in terms of the food. We ordered a Burrito and a quesadilla. Both of it did not taste that good. Definitely not visiting this place again.

Always our favourite local mexican joint- burritos tacos to die for and the nachos! Trippy fries was great and ample chilli to take from, great value for money
Oc
Great food and cozy atmosphere! The vegetables, guacamole and salsa are all fresh. The serving size of nacho for 1 is rather large, definitely filling and great for sharing!
Omnomnic
Have you ever heard of addiction to burritos? This is the place that started it all for me.

I love their casual setting, range of hot sauces, margaritas, moreish Trippy Fries and of course, their burritos. The breakfast burrito that can be eaten for lunch and dinner! That's crazy!
Em C
Absolutely can’t fault this place. The serving sizes are great for the price and the amount of guac and vegan cheese is more than generous with no extra charges attached unlike many other eateries ✨
The Gluten-Free Foodie
Trippy Taco is such an upbeat and welcoming little spot in Fitzroy. I sat out in the sun with a friend and we enjoyed a GF Vegan Special Quesadilla, GF corn chips and guac. The quesadilla was a bit smaller than expected but I assume this is because there aren’t any big GF tortillas on the menu. It is not enough for lunch on its own. The taste was delicious though and the vegan cheese had a great melty quality. Plenty of quac on top of it though! Will definitely be back to try the nachos or small tacos.
Elleymaree_91
Every time I have come eat at Trippy Taco, it has always been consistent (at both locations!). I love the food, staff are usually pretty friendly.
Hannah
I got a breakfast burrito with scrambled tofu and vegan cheese. At first, it tasted ‘Okay’ but the next bites were really bad. It contains a lot of turmeric and the sauce was not nice. I was trying so hard just to finish this horrible burrito. Oh my God! I vomited everything on the next morning and felt very sick of this. This left me a nightmare about burritos in general. I will say no to every Mexican burritos from now. And of course, I will never come back to this place. It was such a very bad experience!
PekoPeko
Had the mixed taco combo which had 1 x blackbean and 1 x Asada. Flavoursome and fresh. Not the biggest feed so if you're looking for something a little more filling you may want to go for the burrito.
Karma Clarke
I love this place!

Delicious, colourful and fresh vegan tacos in a vibrant atmosphere.

Staff are friendly and the restaurant is warm, cosy and fun.

The tofu is marinated beautifully - it is addictive.

Veggies and salad are crisp and tortillas are fresh.

Burritos are massive!

It is no wonder that this place has been around for so long. Seriously fresh and yummy food. Highly recommend.
Vasisht Ram
The best taco joint in the city hands down! Nice variety of appetisers and sides. Friendly and polite staff with trippy ambiance. Would highly recommend this place for vegetarians and vegans.
Good Food Good Mood
Hubby selected TT for dinner last night a decision I wasn’t entirely aligned to given I prefer my taco with chicken and this is an entirely vegetarian place, an institution though so I was somewhat intrigued to try it.

As a group of 6 we struggled as it’s a small spot that doesn’t actually have seating for parties of that size. Staff created a makeshift table for us outside the front by tacking on some tables pulled out of storage to some other diner’s table. It was on a slant and not ideal but they did try to be accommodating.

You pay upfront at the counter and I was relatively happy with my special quesadilla. It did mention goats cheese, not sure if that went in there though as I certainly couldn’t detect it. We also tried the fries with trippy seasoning which were quite flavoursome.

Others at the ‘table’ were less impressed. Soggy nachos for one diner, inconsistent nachos given we had ordered a small and a large and they were effectively the same size, and a daiquiri which didn’t remotely resemble a daiquiri in appearance and, so I’m told, in taste. Somehow I think we’ll stick to Fonda next time
Vivian
We came here for a dinner catch up for a vegetarian/vegan meal

The place is quite small and consistently busy , we ordered 2 plates of corn which was delicious and seasoned and charred nicely and 3 tofu burritos. The tofu was marinated well and tasty which some places fail to achieve. The burrito was abit sickening after some time and not as good as a meat one but still not bad for a vegetarian option
Rifan Thamrin
If you love Mexican food and love tofu, you should definitely visit this place and try their Tofu Asada Burrito! Their tacos and quesadillas are as good but it's so trippy that their burrito is my favourite around Collingwood!
RunnyYolko
On the menu today was the trippy fries with guacamole, mixed combo tacos and vegan quesadilla (Black bean). The fries were nicely seasoned with paprika however lacked a lot of salt which you need for great chips. The tacos were wonderful, fresh and and delicious toppings with the tofu being a personal favourite. Thoroughly enjoyed my vegan quesadilla and feeling very satisfied afterwards.
Great place for a quick Mexican feast with friends which is guaranteed cruelty free!
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: a humble little place in the busy strip of Fitzroy - but it gets quite busy especially on a Friday night so make sure you get in early.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: the trippy fries are super delicious as they season it really well and very crispy - so make sure to order them! The quesadillas was yummy with the melted cheese.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: the tacos were nothing special as they tasted a little bland - especially the black beans one.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place for a Mexican feast over sangria too!

This place was so funky! All vego which is fine but menu seemed slightly limited. However what was on there was done well and whatever the menu lacked the amazingly friendly staff made up for! Such lovely people who, when questioned about the weak tasting mojito they went above and beyond to ensure we were happy; they tried it themselves and agreed (it’s a pre batched mix) so they gave us an extra half shot of rum and another shot of sugar syrup, which is rarely ever done when complaining about drinks! Small cost for the business but made a huge difference to us!! My only gripe with the food was the nachos needing more cheese but that’s a personal preference and I will be sure to ask for more next time. Will definitely return!
Demi-Rose Karibian
The vegan nachos are amazing and the chips are to die for. I wouldn’t recommend getting the tacos though as they are bland, tiny and overpriced.
Diva Isabel Nebreda
I really love the meat! But when I found this place I have to come! This is a vegetarian Mexican Restaurant, the food is really good but the star plate here is the sweet corn tamale! I can go a several time to this restaurant only for eat this amazing dish!
Me
I do love embracing vegetarian but I’ll be honest I did find the mains stodgy and a little boring. The churros on the other hand were very tasty.
Krishna Muppasaani
This is my go to place when I want to eat a great vegetarian food with some heat. Foods always on point and yummy. We had nachos, burritos and corn. Everything is spot on with flavour and taste. We get a variety of chilli sauces to add to dishes and to play with heat which is always good. And to top it up we had churros with Nutella for which just one word awesome.

I like places that offer vegan options for comfort food, especially when I have craving at night and I want to eat light, without feeling bloated afterwards. I ordered Mixed taco combo and changed to vegan cheese, as well as Tofu asada taco with chargrilled tofu. They were great, I wish I had beer or margs as well.... but that would completely cancel out my purpose for getting tacos here
Amysyder
I really enjoyed this place because they do vegan options. It’s great for someone with dietary requirements who still wants to enjoy Mexican. I wouldn’t say it’s the best Mexican food I’ve ever had, but my quesadilla was very tasty, the vegan cheese was good quality, and it filled me up! However my friend was a little disappointed with her tacos, both were small and didn’t really fill her up considering the price, they weren’t particularly well seasoned either and she couldn’t taste the goats cheese that was suppose to be on it. If you want a filling dinner I would say stick to a burrito or quesadilla, you definitely get more bang for your buck!

Ordered:
🌮 Tofu Asada Taco (2): Chargrilled tofu with mozzarella, salad, salsa, avocado slices, goats cheese ($15.50)
🥙 Quesadilla: Corn wheat flour tortilla with melted mozzarella and salsa filling ($9.50)
🍟 Large Nachos: Corn tortilla chips topped with smokey ranchero sauce, mozzarella and black beans baked in the oven, with fresh salsa, guacamole and sour cream on top ($18.50) + jalapenos ($2.00)
🥙 Bean and Cheese Burrito: Large wheat flour tortilla wrap, mozarella, black beans and salsa ($11.00)

Review:
When you thought vegetarian Mexican could work but I'm glad I gave it a go anyway.

Would highly rate the Salsa - very tangy, sweet and fresh. Mimicking the other reviews... I can understand why multiple reviewers have mentioned the blandness of the food. Considering there was no meaty element, hence missing that bold and dark character, a few other elements of the dishes could've done with a punch of flavour to the face to compensate.

My favourite meal out of the four was the Quesadilla. It was simple and toasted which made it great to bite in to!
My vegan mate recommended the Tamale which was unfortunately, unavailable that night.

The service was practically nonexistent but friendly for when we did have an interaction. We arrived early enough (around 6:30pm) and chose our own table then went to the counter to order. It got very packed around the 7pm mark! So I would definitely considering avoiding that time slot.

I like the idea of a fully vegetarian and vegan Mexican but unfortunately, not for me.

Love the tempeh taco and breakfast burrito. Have wanted to try this place for a while since it always looks so jam-packed! Didn’t disappoint.

I have no idea what the fuss is about. Rather average all round. Paid $8.50(!) for a handful of tasteless corn chips and salsa but received guacamole instead. Used chili sauce to add flavour. Also ordered two different burritos but they tasted exactly the same. So again we had to add chili sauce to add flavour. The whole bill came to just under $50 (add 15% surcharge for public holidays!). Felt ripped off to be honest. The service was indifferent and we could hear the staff talking about their weekend activities. I wouldn't mind so much if the place was loud and busy but it was dead quiet. Definitely not worth the hype.
Comfy Chairs
Had been meaning to go here for ages as always seemed vibrant and busy. Vegetarian Mexican food that is tasty and filling. This is not a fancy place but somewhere to go and enjoy the company of your friends and know you will get good, tasty food, friendly service and a fun start to your night as you watch the hustle and bustle of Gertrude street. Next time I will add some jalapeño as I like my Mexican a little more spicy but I really enjoyed my visit to Trippy Tacos and left happy.
Kevin
Super impressed with this place! Didn't realise that it was vegetarian/vegan only (no meat options) but it was still so good! I ordered the tofu tacos and they were really clean and fresh! Tofu was seasoned well and you get a decent amount for the price. My friend got the nachos for 1 and they were good too.
Only down side is the place is small, a bit sticky and doesn't have the best air con (not sure if they had air con at all...)
So on a hot day it was a little uncomfortable. Still good though!
Food Hoarder
There is nothing more that annoys me than restaurants who over charge their food because it’s somehow trendy or in a hip area.

I ordered the mixed taco combo which consisted of 1 tofu & 1 black bean. Each taco was the size of a tea cup saucer & cost me $15:00. I don’t have an issue with the portion sizes, but I do have a problem with being charged this amount for something so small. Yes, perhaps they hand make everything, but I still think $15 is far fetched.

In terms of flavour it was just ok. Mexican food is meant to burst with flavour, however this was quite bland. The black bean taco was also extremely sloppy and falls apart as you try to make it to your mouth.

Sure it’s hip, sure it’s cool but come on Hipsters, if you’re going to charge this much, make it worthwhile for the guest at least.

I won’t be revisiting unfortunately. A total ripoff.
Mo
I’ve been here and had the taquitos and a burrito. It’s all vegan here so it’s quite healthy, but it tastes great too. You have to order and pay at the bar, then they bring the food out to your table. The decor is very bright and sets a fun mood.
Sasha
Came here for lunch. The food is very filling, portion sizes are quite generous and the price was reasonable. (note: chip portions are large) We did not have to wait long for the food to arrive.
The shop is small, I found that it was very warm inside. Also there isn't heaps of shade for the outdoor seating.
Hailey
Not particularly anything special. Burrito was filling and they don't skimp on black beans but I'm still not sure I'd hurry back as the flavours were lacking and it wasn't as fresh as other mex places.
Kimdows1
I never review but this place was so bad I had no choice. The food took forever to come out and was bland despite the colourful appearance. The waiter was wondering around confused the whole time. I ordered two tacos which were VERY small in size, two mouthfuls which cost almost $15! I had to go home and cook myself lunch afterwards as I was still hungry (and I have a tiny appetite). Avoid at all costs.
Julian
This place is amazing! The service, the decor, the menu variety, the quality of the food, the speed of which the food came out, the taste of the food.
This place gets hyped up a lot, it’s actually the real deal though. Check it out.

We often eat at trippy taco for almost 9 yrs, we travelled for 1 1/2 hrs to visit this restaurant and enjoy their foods, today when we dine in to have some lunch, we are very frustrated, feel so angry and very disappointed with one staff who kicked us out from the table where we are sitting just to cater this whole bunch of idiots (10 people) because they want to sit altogether in one long table. When they came they didn’t even wait and ask if the table they moving is available or not. They just did it by themselves because they want to sit altogether. My point of view?, we purely understand that the restaurant is small and people have a choice where you want to sit and share your table, and there is no booking, but really? To tell us to move to another table is a big joke. We came first and we ordered already, we are just waiting for our food to be serve, and when this bunch of idiots come because they want a long table for all of them you will tell us to move just to cater them? We can share tables if they have a big group like that but not to the point that you will tell to your other customers to move just for the sake of them, just to cater them, beside don’t expect that there’s no one eating at trippy taco, it’s always busy during lunch. So if you want to bring your big group let them know that you can’t eat all together in one long table, or they need to wait until the table becomes available! The staff with RED HAIR EXTENSION is not really approachable and those group we encounter today doesn’t care and didn’t even say thank you to us for giving them the table where we are sitting! Ridiculous! We end up throwing the food we ordered we can’t eat because of the frustration we had today! Hope we will never experience it again.

Mexican with a vegetarian twist! The corn are grilled nicely and the cheese combination with the mayo hits the spot. Queasadillas are cheesey and soft. Burrito is filling and great if you're looking for a quick bite. The fries are my favorite although it would be better if it is crispy.
Speccy
Cheap & cheerful. The mixed burrito extra grilled was so amazing & I didn't want it to finish! Loved the smokey tofu asada throughout. Only downside was, they were a bit stingy on the small amount of guacamole in it. Also no heaters on outside, & inside is incredibly noisy & crowded at peak dinner time. The burrito bowl is also super yum.
VodkaO_ZS
Nice taco with a very fresh taste, perfect for this hot weather. I didn't notice this is a vegan spot until I couldn't find any prawn or chicken on menu. The black bean taco and spicy tofu taco are both great, I like the tofu one better as it has more layers of taste. The drink is nice as well.
Bob Weis
As a Vegan and living nearby with an amazing number of choices that will take another couple of years to eat at this boisterous little Mexican styled cafe is gratifying for a quick hit safe in the knowledge that what you are getting is Vegan and tasty.
My favourite is the Vegan Quesadilla special. You can add heat and spice if you wish. There are tables outside as well.
Definitely one for trying.
Over the road is Neko Neko. But that’s another story.
FoodHedonist
One of my favourite Mexican places in Melbourne. I like my chicken and meat but coming here I feel vegan can be really delicious. With more such places it won't be hard to turn vegan. I have been here a couple of times before and have always enjoyed my meal. Quesadilla and mixed burrito are my favourite. Was a bit disappointed with the quantity of my fresh OJ but overall a very satisfying meal. I would have given it a 4-4.5 in the past but I feel they need to make some variations in their menu.
H
Delicious quesadillas, breakfast tacos and chips! The taquitos are ok, the filling is like bean paste but maybe that's just what taquitos are like.
Julie Williams
I had my daughter’s 21st at Trippy Tacos. The food was delicious and the staff were all wonderful. The night went smoothly. We had our own room which holds around 22. They also have their own pastry chef who made my daughter’s 21st cake which was enjoyed by all. Highly recommend. Thank you Trippy Taco. xx
Baby Kitty
Surprisingly goood. Great vegetarian tacos. The chips here were nice as well. Burrito was good. Just very enjoyable and would definitely return
Foram Trivedi
The food was very nice. We ordered the Trippy fries and large portion of nachos. The quantity for both were good sized. In terms of taste the trippy fries were excellent. As for the nachos, they tasted delicious too. Overall the food was scrumptious.
For the ambience - the Trippy Taco located in Fitzroy has a great cozy and vibrant atmosphere.
Julia Liow
service wise, they seem like they are understaffed with only one waitress waiting the whole restaurant (she was very nice though!) hence it was a bit slow especially when it came to ordering food. the food itself came pretty quickly which was a saving point, plus it tasted really good as well. despite the small-ish portions, it was really filling. i definitely recommend it if you're extremely hungry and craving something substantial. (it was vegan friendly too) Adelle Yen
Madeleine Scerri
So many options for vegans. I had the nachos and was full after I finished the generous serve of corn chips and delicious toppings. It can get a bit squishy inside so come during off peak times or order for takeaway.
Sanj Tanya
Decent Mexican food, but sadly expected a little more from this place, I'm not sure if I just had my hopes up or if that's the quality of their food. It's worth a try to experience it but I personally don't think I'll be going back. The nachos weren't the best, it was rather dry and didn't have a lot considering the price.
Caity Sage H-w
Tried the tofu burrito and nachos (vegan). The vegan cheese is pretty good however the burrito was terrible it was just diced poorly prepared/uncooked tofu with a lot of red sauce & cheese - no salad & no guacamole at all. The nachos were nice, good vegan sour cream, but nothing special.
Sherie Ryan
Hmm, tasteless, no flavour, cold tofu,. no spice , a real let down, took forever to get it. cold room. ..maybe it was just today but... the staff were friendly. wouldnt go back here.
Erin Morrissy
Trippy Taco is a cute, colourful place. The food is pretty good, but often quite bland. Very small serves for the prices. My partner and I always order the same dish and it has come to us different every single time, sometimes it's a big plate of food, sometimes it's all and awkwardly presented. Staff often seem a bit all over the place. My stomach was upset after eating there last time I went.
It would be great if they had more gluten free options and more flavour! That being said, I love the vegan cheese they have available.
Toni-Rose
I'm always filled with so much excitement when coming to Trippy Taco. But after tonight I won't be coming again. The food wasn't how I know it. It tasted like they just emptied a can of beans and a can of tomatoes on the bland nachos. It was extremely bland, I couldn't taste any seasoning. Burrito was the same. Bland but spicy. No seasoning. Hot chips are usually a winner but this time they were powdery and cold.

To top things off they gave us the wrong cheese, then the waitress took it to the kitchen the chef made it fairly obvious how annoyed he was. Also saw a waitress eat a chip from the chips she was about to take to a table!!!!
Brunch Diaries
Really really disappointing. No flavour in the salsa. No flavour in the guacamole. The burritos are bland, as are the tacos. However If I was passing by and fancied some fries I would pop in for some. They also seem to make their own corn chips. But on the whole very, very poor Mexican food.
Laiken
My friend who loves this place brought me here to try it out on my recent visit to Melbourne. I ordered the burrito with beans and tofu with guac and she ordered the burrito with just beans and a side of fries with vegan aoli.
They brought out my burrito quite quickly but I didn't want to eat it alone so I waited. My friends fries arrived with the wrong sauce, so we got that changed and that took a little while. The chips were good though. We waited approx. 20 - 30 minutes for my friends burrito and they came over and apologised and said they were busy and offered to put my burrito in the warmer while we waited which was a nice gesture. They also gave us a $20 voucher which I thought was really nice too.
It was quite clear they were understaffed.

The burrito itself wasn't too bad, but it was a lot spicier than I would have liked. If the spice wasn't there, I would have rated it higher!
VegTreats
Not a shabby burrito but this outlet has a few areas to improve on! The food itself was pretty decent. I inhaled the vegan mixed burrito (with asada tofu and black beans) but the contents/texture seemed a little too watery for my taste. Still filling and relatively healthy. Although, complaints must be made about the extra charge on the vegan option: I asked for no vegan cheese, no guacamole and still had to pay extra...doesn't really make too much sense. Atmosphere and music were very niche and stereotypically Mexican. Unfortunately, the real downfalls were the staff. Being dismissive and blatantly rude, the girl at the counter grew immediately agitated when she didn't understand my order. I understand if you've been working a long shift but customer service is an integral part of any establishment. Nevertheless, I appreciate the presence of a vegetarian/vegan restaurant and recommend Trippy Taco...but maybe for takeaway.
Andrew
I was expecting something more. My 'Traditional Burrito' wasn't very flavoursome at all (quite bland to be honest). I've had much better. 3/10.
Kell
The service here is a bit of a failure, and I've given this place too many chances for how mediocre the food is and how painful the staff are to deal with. During one of our visits, the girl at the counter handled the situation so poorly when the EFTPOS machine apparently stopped working. Instead of putting the orders through to the kitchen manually or even requesting cash payments from the customers, she halted service entirely and left the 5-6 parties in the queue waiting for at least twenty minutes. The girl never managed to sort out the EFTPOS, but someone from the kitchen was smart enough to finally prompt her on proceeding with the orders. No apologies for the wait. No thank yous for being patient. The nachos and burrito were pretty bland as well. Not worth the pain you have to go through, not to mention that the food here is pretty expensive for a pile of beans and sour cream... Don't waste your time here. Further, we had a few stomach problems after dining here. I'm not one for accusations but it has happened multiple times.

I love tacos and nachos more than most things in life. Their vegan tacos and nachos are on point! It's a small venue with more of a fast food vibe which is nice depending on the experience you are looking for. I don't like feeling rushed which I did on a Saturday night (fair as it was super busy) and the wine list is limited. Regardless, I will definitely be back.
MissGenWhy
Great when it opened. The food takes much, much longer to come out than before. Staff are now really cocky and brings lots of unnecessary attitude. I watched one staff member openly mock a customer with the kitchen staff at the back. Not so good when diners sit back there! I'm out.
Kristina
Cheap and ridiculously delicious veg/vegan mexican food! Im here almost weekly and will never bloody stop. No matter what mood im in, trippys always hits the spot. 💖
Michael Borg
Always love stopping in and getting an after work vegan tofu asada burrito. It always hits the spot after a long day. I highly recommend getting the tofu asada burrito pimped out with vegan sour cream, jalapeños, cheezly vegan cheese and extra toasty 👌 you can thank Lauren Hammel from Melbourne band 'High Tension' for that life hack. 🤙

I was super excited from the hype ive seen of this place through fellow reviews. I decided to stop by and try this place out. I ordered a burrito and it was not what i expected. Soggy, 90% full of lettuce, with sultanas?. The kitchen looked dirty and not maintained. I was honestly so disappointed. This place has a good potential with a university around the corner and a good location unfortunate that they dont take advantage of that.

Came here for my birthday and everything I had was absolutely delicious and fresh. The cheese in the quesadilla is to die for. Will definitely go back.

I was suggested to go here from a vegan friend and I was super excited known vegan and vegetarian Mexican can be really good! The shop was laid out a little cramped, service was average and I didn't enjoy my food. I didn't like the chip seasoning and my burrito was watery and flavourless. I really wish I enjoyed it! Not for everyone but I know a lot of people who love it! Corn was delicious but

The greatest burrito I've ever had! Nothing compares to the vegan burrito with everything in it, and I'm not even vegan. Can't talk this place up enough.
Michelle Young
The food was pleasant here but pretty small portion sizes considering the price and not the best Mexican food I've ever had either. Not too bad and not great either.

What the hell... was that?

If a plate of Nachos would taste better if made by a dyspeptic three year old from ingredients that might be found in the pantry at home then something is seriously, seriously wrong.

Trippy Taco was busy, packed and with a line waiting to be served, and the food was just... just... WRONG.

No seasoning, bland salsa, dry and unappetising black beans, soggy flavourless cardboard chips, microwaved crap.

Oh no. HELL no.

Cost: $20 PP
Ambience: Fitzroy Casual
Stand Out Item: Special Quesadilla, Trippy Fries

True to Fitzroy's spirit Trippy Taco is a small vegetarian Mexican joint. This is probably healthiest Mexican I have ever eaten. The food is fresh and nice. We started by ordering some Trippy fries and cold drinks. The fries were truly 'Trippy' and we couldn't stop munching on them.

We dug into the Special Quesadilla and Trippys Original Burrito as mains and also ordered some sweet corn tamale go give it a try. Tamale for those who don't know is like a sweet corn cake. While i quite enjoyed the Special Quesadilla, the Burrito dint do it for me, as i just expected it to be more spicy. There is a variety of Mexican hot sauces available to spice up your food and did use a lot of it generously. Most of the food is black bean or tofu based with lots of salad and the usual guacamole, salsa and sour cream. It definitely makes you feel light after eating it and not heavy like after your usual Mexican meal.

The food is quite different at Trippy and is not for everyone. It is definitely for those who don't enjoy grease. Its where you go if you want some cheap, healthy Mexican cuisine. It is definitely worth giving it a go, and some items like the tamale might take time to grow on you. I did find the food to have less alt, but that might be going hand in hand with the whole healthy thing. The less sodium, the more healthy.

The concept is simple: find yourself a table, take a menu and order at the counter and the food comes to you. The place does quite busy, so be ready to wait if necessary as there are no table bookings available.

All in all it was good spending the evening at this joint, full of people just full of people of all ages looking for some healthy non-fast-foody food and a pleasant evening in Fitzroy.

Yummy food .................................……................................... ..........................................................
Always good to have more vegetarian options and overall this place delivers a decent feed.

The thing is, without adding the sauces (which they do not make themselves), all the food has the same combination of quite bland tasting ingredients. For instance, the black beans they put in everything have not been jazzed up with any mexican flavours - they are just black beans from a can. That's kinda boring, and so you get 3.5.

Finally got myself down to Trippy Taco, of which I've heard so much about! Was really looking forward to trying their burritos, having recently transitioned to a plant-based diet. I wasn't disappointed - the food was tasty and filling, with vegan options available for every menu item (from what I could see). Food came quickly and staff were friendly. Will definitely return - plus looking forward to the vegan pizzeria the owners are opening soon!

We came here on a weeknight. We had the nachos to share. The serving was fairly small and sadly didn't have a lot of taste. Good atmosphere though and friendly staff.
Tyler
If you're after Mexican food, Trippy Taco is a bland, tasteless substitute. Not only did I not enjoy the original burrito and trippy fries that I ordered but I was left with violent food poisoning keeping me awake for half the night.
Mrs Lavender
Friendly staffs , exotic feeling , love the graffiti and the vibe in Fitzory . We had the grill tofu taco and a nacho, and a corn chips. Love the grill tofu , it doesn't taste like vegetarian but it is ! Taste healthy and mild . Even I had a very sensitive digestion system but I feel fine after the meal.
Annannann
Trips Taco unfortunately was very disappointing. The food was bland, lacked flavour, seasoning, acidity and freshness. The only positive we're the drinks which we're fantastic.

We got Trippy Tacos and a Trippy burrito. Both were spot on, though I did have some food envy when my burrito didnt have avo in it (I know its not traditional but I want some avo!). The food came out quickly and with a smile. They didnt have too many staff on but everyone got the level of service they deserved which was really impressive too. You get what you pay for which is honest, healthy delicious food. If they could teach me how to wrap a burrito as taught as that every time I could die a happy lady. Thanks Trippy!
MandyToorak
Had fries and shared a burrito at this establishment many moons ago. Fries were spicy and good. However the burrito was not very memorable... More raisins than I ever want in a (savoury) wrap. Did not finish. Could never recommend in good conscience.

The vegetarian-Mexican mixes of Trippy Taco have saved me on many an occasion, no less after one disastrous dinner attempt over at the heavily overpriced foil that is Transformer. Over at Trippy Taco it’s great value, quick outputs and service was a smile and that’s all good stuff. Getting a table can be tough at busy times, but I think it’s mostly worth the wait.
Paige M
I see what they are trying to achieve at tippy taco, but for me everything just falls a bit too flat. The tacos just tasted bland. No heat and not a lot of spice. Certainly not what I was expecting. Better options nearby.
VegoLover
Fast friendly service for either a snack or light meal.
Vegan surcharge is well with it.
Place gets crowded on weekends during meal times.
Satisfied with the tofu taco and nachos.
Tried burritos previously and they were too filling.
Tweei Nguyen
Amazing vegetarian vegan place. Good Mexican food just enough and not too small of a serve nor too big. Their chips and nachos are to die for, must try the tacos!!
Let Laura Eat
I really enjoyed my mixed burrito until I got to some goats cheese which I had requested not to be added. Until then it was super tasty for a vegan burrito, but I just couldn't finish it after that as I can't stand that flavor. I would come back again in hope the same mistake didn't happen a second time.
Selina
Small Mexican food cafe where you order & pay at the counter first. The Vegan nachos were nice but a bit too mushy/soggy! The Mocktail was good and decorations are cute! Probably not going to be a regular hang out for me but worth a visit especially for Vegans.
Kim
Great vegan burritos and tacos. Looking forward to trying nachos in the future. Good service too. The fries seasoning could be improved however, like make it more salty and spicy. UPDATE: nachos are great but overpriced.
Alex Campbell
When I am sad my go to place is the comforting lure of songs so depressing that they sound like they were crafted from the salty tears of Drake himself. If he was stuck on the side of the Eastern freeway. And it was raining. And it was Tuesday. And his stove top didn't work. And he'd forgotten his sandwiches. And his thesis was due.

The only way of clamoring out of such depths, at least in so far as I know, is with the Trippy Taco mixed burrito.

10/10, would definitely cure bouts of planetary self pity with again
Skellie
Enjoyed my experience here but there is definitely room for improvement.
We had bean tacos, tofu tacos, fries and a quesadilla.
The tacos were nice but lacked any Mexican punch. Needed more spices or heat. You NEED flavour or heat. You can't do neither. Was basically like a bean or tofu salad wrap, not really punchy... but hey- I like salad wraps.
I liked the sultanas in the tacos. Good touch.
Paprika fries were great. Mexican cola was yummy and different.
Vegetarian/vegan menu gets a whole bonus point.
Eatwithhendri
Tofu burrito - unique, moist and delicious
Quesadilla - cheesy and yum
Nachos - ok nothing to rave
Corn cob - hmmm I want more cheese please..
Trippy fries - Smoky and tasty
Queen Of Food
Had a burrito here the other night and was sadly very disappointed. I chose the beans and cheese burrito and it was essentially like eating nothing. It had no favour at all and lacked any imagination - even the cheese was bland! Where's the delicious spices that make a burrito?! I think you have to be "tripping" to enjoy the food here. Won't ever return.
Caffiend
Next time you have a hankering for a burrito and you come across this place, my advice is to keep walking, go to a supermarket, buy one of those Old El Paso kits and make it yourself.
Olivia Wadham
In love. I an absolute fan of their burritos ! So many flavours ! The tomato gravy is to die ! The service is really speedy. The sangria is also really yum. It's a local for me! Fave Mexican in Melbourne , hands down

Stopped in quickly with a friend on the way to a seminar; grabbed the Cheese & Bean Burrito. I'd forgotten just how good black beans can taste! Unfortunately had to rush as we were running a little late, but looking forward to coming back here and spending more time enjoying the food and taking in the ambiance.
Let Me Out
Eaten a lot of burritos in my life and this wasn't the best. I ordered the tofu asado borrito which was suppose to include Tofu, goats cheese and mozzarella. After a few tasteless bites it seems weird to me that I didn't get to the cheesy part yet....hmmmm. into another bites and I had the feeling I wasn't given what I ordered. Went back to the register and let the guy know that there is no cheese as was described in the menu. he said " oh it should be mixed in and melted" which there was none of that. then he said " I can make you another burrito but you won't finish it" what kind of customer service is that??? I said never mind and left. total disappointment, never be back again. The burrito that was given to me was very bland, there wasn't a good mix of flavors, felt like the ingredients didn't really mix well together.
Ab_cat
I love this places mixed burrito. It's perfect food on a weekend when you want really tasty takeaway that's not full of greasey meat (let's face it we all love meat but don't need it all the time). The beans and Beetroot in the burrito are a hit and the tortilla wrap is Warm and a little crispy to bite into. The service is good though a little slow when it's busy, well worth ringing ahead to order takeaway it awkward in there waiting cos it's so small, or go for a walk while waiting and checkout the record store next door!
Foodie
A great laid back eatery to grab a quick fresh bite.
Love that it's vegetarian with vegan options. Yes servings are a tad small but I appreciate that the ingredients are super fresh. I'd rather have the quality not be compromised for quantity. So yes you may have to order a few servings and it then gives you the option to have a bit of variety at least at each sitting which I don't mind. This was my first time there and yes, I did go and order another serving after 2 of the yummy soft shell taco. The corn was cooked perfectly and the nachos was tasty and fresh. I will be going back this week with more friends. I would recommend this place to vegetarians for a tasty meal.
Service staff make the place friendly with warm service which is always nice to receive.
Teeny Reeny
I've been here a couple of times, but only because I happen to be passing and hungry, I wouldn't make an extra trip to come here. The food is fine and I find the portions a little small. The atmosphere is great and it's usually hustling and bustling!
Julycheee
Lots of seats were available before 6:30pm on Saturday but soon after, people were piling in and there was a huge queue snaking through the tiny restaurant. The food was good overall and we didn't feel like there was anything "missing", being vegetarian food. Tofu tacos were indeed delicious, although very soggy to eat. Nachos were excellent and pretty filling. Give the corn a miss - ours was burnt and there wasn't enough flavour on it. Trippy seasoning on the fries was also pretty underwhelming. We had a nice meal and it was great value but I'm not sure there was enough in the menu to entice us back very soon.
Vkap8
Good vegetarian food. Have gotten food from here on a couple of occasions. Was seemingly unaware that it is 100% vegetarian on the first visit. The food is good and is generally helped by the hot sauces.
CLABEL
Tried the cheese beans burrito last time with a side dish of the trippy fries. The burrito was so big and filled with so much beans. In terms of the flavour, it's not bad but nothing wow from it. The trippy fries was good as it is crunchy and seasoned well. This is a perfect dish for vegetarian.
Ange
Had the mixed taco pack for $13.50. Taco is soft taco as opposed to hard taco. The ingredients in both were quite wet which resulted in the taco being soggy and extremely hard to pick you. Serving definitely on the smaller size. Flavour of both were quite bland which was disappointing. Won't be returning.
Andrew
It was litt fam. Ordered the Mixed Burrito,Trippy fries and Nachos. All vegan options. They were delicious, nutritious, and absolutely shocking. The Nachos were so good, we couldn't believe it was vegan.

If you're keen on some quality food and you love Burritos, head down there. It's awesome!

Only wish the burritos were more spicy.
Out And About
Probably one of the best Mexican spots in Fitzroy! We had a great "special quesadilla" with extra tofu (comes with guacamole) and the tofu tacos (excellent). We also had a side of fries which were divine👌
Mr Koul
Ordered the Nachos at Trippy Taco. The flavours were bland and the serving size was tiny. Terrible, feel ripped off, we all left hungry, underwhelmed and with a much lighter wallet. On top of this we had a long wait. There are better places. Not recommended.
Phlebebe
I love this place. Especially when they have a drinks special. I love the nachos, burritos and the tacos look really good. I was there last night and with a friend, we both had a piña colada. It was ok. I make a good piña colada, so to have an average one that I paid $14 for was a bit of a...

I'm a big fan of the tofu asada burrito (ordered vegan, of course). But burritos aside, the real reasons to write home about this place are the legendary Trippy Fries, of course. That seasoning is enough to get me out the door and on my bike in hail or shine. Don't pass them up, whatever you do!

In a turn of events I’ve found myself on bed rest in hospital, AGAIN! And as much as I love hospital food (sarcasm much?), I look forward to the days my husband picks up dinner on his way in to see me. I must say, if you get stuck in hospital you really want it to be inner city. I’m fortunate enough to be based in East Melbourne, which means some of the best eateries in town are just a hop, skip and a jump away (well not for me, but for anyone I can convince to do a food run).
Experiencejoysoflife
The first time I came here I had the Black Bean Burrito with Vegan Cheese. Thought it was okay, pretty basic. The chips were good too. I decided to give this place another shot, and I'm glad I did. I got the Tofu Assada Burrito which was beautiful, was really satisfied after. The trippy fries also go down with this well. I think there should be an option when ordering to include some salt in the burrito, this can do wonders too. I thought the corn was pretty average and overpriced for what it was though.. That being said, I will be back to try more food.
Chris
Located next to one of my favorite record stores, I have been to Trippy Taco on a few occasions. The food is well portioned and tasty and the restaurant is vibrant and has a casual vibe 'eat in or take away' vibe with a selection of mexican beers in the fridge.
Mary
I love this place! (Helped that there was a ridiculously cute puppy outside while I was eating.) The tacos and burritos are so tasty, great flavours, great quality. Cool vibe and delicious!
Stephanie
The food is really tasty, the serving sizes are substantial too.
I was really happy with all the vegan options, the burritos and nachos are more highly recommended from me than the tacos, but that's just personal preference.
Definitely recommend some fries on the side.
Kitty Robertson
This place never disappoints; as a hungry vegan I always leave satisfied for less than $20. Excellent guac, top notch vegan cheese and the level of spicyness is easily adjusted by the wide range of hot sauces they have up the front (the really pale green one is super hot!) so it's okay for people who aren't that into chilli. The nachos are fantastic (I always share a big one with whoever I take) and the vegan burrito is huge and a steal at $13. Hot tip: the tofu is a much better option than the beans if you're getting tacos - I don't know what they do to it but it's super flavoursome.
Mobasshera Jabbar
Took a to-go from here,Classic burrito and a bean and cheese. The difference between the two being the former contained salad. However getting Chinese cabbage in a burrito is not to my liking.Had ordered extra sour cream on my bean and cheese, however could have been little more generous..Also I am not too sure that I did not taste flavour enhancer in my food...Never mind!
Cheese quesadila was not the moist cheesy kind but still decent enough. Will have to try again to get a better picture.
Shanna Johnson
The service was good and the food came out quickly. Lucky we got there early because it got quite busy very quickly(Sunday night)
I had a fantastic quesadilla and even my meat loving husband enjoyed his bean burrito.
Well priced and would go again.
Secret Chef
We arrived at the Mexican joint and was really small but inviting as the interior does go well with the food they have on the menu. They are all reasonably priced as I had the Tofu Asada Burito which tofu basically replaces the usual meet and it tasted light and the guacamole was addictive. Also had their fries and really goes well with the mains as the spice is on the mild side. I also like the fact that they have a vegan option as well which will try next time. Will add this place as one of the best vegetarian places to eat at.
Johnny :):)
Omg i love eating burritos so much I never want to stop. Used to love the taco bill but nup, not anymore trippy is the best. Consuming their food is so pleasurable I will eat the whole shop one day. You think I'm joking but I'm not, I will do it.
MSY123
Probably one of the only mexican vegetarian eatery that exists. The burrito's hefty in size, nachos are spot on and the range of Mexican beers and tequilas are delightful.
Came here with my housemates and sat outside, it's quite a tiny place and can get packed up.
Claudia Facy
Awesome vegetarian place in Fitzroy. Pretty much a vegan option for every meal as well. The tacos had excellent presentation and nachos are a standout. The quesadilla was nice but lacked in flavour a little. The service was okay and their no reservation policy made getting a table a little difficult but other than that it was a great experience. Definitely check it out.

Food: Taquitos were rather tasteless and bland, as was the burrito. Just tasted of unseasoned refried beans.

Service: No order to the line snaking outside, contributed to my friends having an argument over a table. Anyways, the staff initially seemed ok until the waiter realised my partner took a burrito which was intended for another table (not his fault, they delivered a burrito to our table number, and my partner bought a burrito too except with extra jelapenos...). The waiter asked my partner if he wanted the burrito with jelapenos, and my partner was like "well i'd like to try the one i ordered" (as mentioned the burrito was bland), then the waiter retorted that he couldn't let my partner have an extra one for free (err why bother offering the burrito then?!) and also emphasised that my partner taking the burrito was the reason there were all these other problems with the order. You guys stuffed up the order by delivering the wrong burrito to the wrong table - don't blame us!

I'd rather get the burrito from veggie bar any day
Xyn
Pay adult price for pathetic kiddy size taco; queue up first to pay for your order but get your food last! What kind of service if this? It doesn't take a minute to make a taco! I'm never going back!
Mia
Absolutely fantastic. Fresh, quick delicious food served by friendly and attentive staff. I bring meat eaters here all the time and they're amazed the food is vegetarian/vegan. Thanks Trippy Taco. 5 stars.
Brian M
Consistently great veggie Mexican food. Friendly service. Good selection of Mexican hot sauces, and drinks. Well priced. The only drawback is that the store is quite small, even with the outside seating. However, the chips rock!
Suishavingfun
You may not call it authentic Mexican but it is the best place for Mexican food! The mixed burrito with black beans and tofu is absolutely delicious, and I also love the casual and relaxed atmosphere.
George
Love this place and just discovered I can have my mixed burrito naked . Not that the tortilla isn't delish but just counting the calories .

My favorites are the mixed burrito , Trippy corn and the quesadillas when not counting calories .

Best Mexican in Fitzroy by far !!!

Jeez. What happened here? Trippy Taco always has had a reputation for being inconsistent but whilst there is a lot of variation between visits it's always erred on the side of being decent in my experience. Except until now. We were one of about three tables in the restaurant (the quietest I've ever seen it). We ordered two burritos which took a very long time (so did everyone else's food). That was fine, we weren't in a hurry. But when they came they were...truly inedible. Both were so, so burnt that my friend likened it to licking the bottom of a dirty, greasy barbecue grill. Neither of us could get through more than about two bites. We took them back inside and they couldn't care less. With barely a shrug they gave us our money back (didn't bother asking if we'd like new ones) and we left. This has always been one of my regular places, I come here at least once a month. But I'd really reconsider coming back again after this.
Ezio Hungary
It was so packed when I was there, tiny restaurant but with quality food and extremely friendly staffs. Start to love this place now, will come back more often now.
Jessie Hams
Been here a couple times now. The menu has a generous range, and is quite affordable. Service was quick, casual and friendly. The seasoning on the trippy fries is tasty, but can be overpowering if there's too much of it. I've had the special quesadilla and the taquitos, both were quite nice, particularly the quesadilla.
I. D.
This place has been on my list to try for a while and now I finally did. It was quite busy on a Thursday night, but there wasn't much of a wait to order. The service was friendly. The aircon was too high inside, it was really cold, which wasn't pleasant. When we could, we moved outside. We took the special quesadilla and the mixed taco meal. The special quesadilla was delicious! The mixed taco meal was nice, but not as good as the special quesadilla. Those two things were not enough for two people, so we ordered another special quesadilla. I would definitely go back here and try some of the other things!
Irene Khoo
Stumbled upon this place on our first day in Melbourne and very happy that we did. We're not vegetarian but found that the burritos were so flavoursome that we didn't miss having meat. There are options with and without tofu to suit your preference.
Jodie
This place used to be favourite but the last two times we've gone, the food has been cold in the middle. Don't think we'll be rushing back.
Nick
Im not a vegetarian and usual love meat in my burrito but this was really delicious! I had the tofu burrito and it was awesome..fries were also the bomb..staff were nice and not a long wait at all...will be back!!
Food Baby
The special quesadilla here, with goat's cheese, salsa and guacamole, doesn't get the balance quite right. It comes off as too cheesy. I'd like to be able to taste a little more of the salsa and guacamole. Both of which, don't really shine. I'm still looking for a salsa that delivers a depth of fresh tomato balanced with sweetness and heat, and will keep looking.
Joede Walters
The vegan options are great and recommended for everyone to try. Service has always been good.
Tofu Asada Burritos are amazing as are the fries . Due to its' popularity, TT's need more seating :)
Tyrone Biggums
If you don't get the mixed burrito you may as well kill yourself, because it's amazing and you'd be making a huge mistake. The sauces are neat, the staff are chilled as. Probably one of the best burritos I've ever had and I'm not vegetarian.
Aussie Nawaab
Trippy Taco Dudeeeeeeee!!!

A very Hipster-esque joint with a cool vibe and good food. The team running this place serves up good quality home style fresh Mexican food quickly, cheaply and with a great attitude. Even though the food did not blow me away it was the entire package that will make me come back for more.

We ordered the mixed Tacos which half good half boring. The tofu taco was really nice and a version Ive never had before. The regular black bean taco had this weird beany smell which didn't make me love it but it was edible nevertheless. We got the regular nachos which are good for two, freshly made with loads of toppings and cheese. My friend tried the Quesadilla with black beans and that was pretty good although the beany smell which I earlier spoke about was still there. I also ordered a Tropical non alcoholic Draiquiri which and awesome trippy drink and I totally loved it.

Unlike other Mexican joints this place specializes in vegetarian food which is awesome, the pricing is very good and the food quality is nice. Staff are friendly and helpful and the vibe is pretty good too. A must recommend place if your around Fitzroy and in the mood for trippy food.
LC.
This vegetarian (with many vegan options) has found its niche in Fitzroy. While I'm usually a meat eater, some decent vegetarian Mexican never goes astray and they do it well here, hearty and filling no matter what you order. Not my favourite Mexican in Melbourne but if you are passing through and craving some burritoy goodness, it is cheap, quick and friendly.
Keen For Cuisine
If you're vegetarian... or even if you're not the food here is really nice! Mexican inspired cuisine with tacos, quesadillas and plenty other options. Quick and easy take away food option or there's option to dine in.
Bonsaisly
I can only really rate the tofu asada burrito as it's the only thing I've had, and I loved it so much I can't bare to get anything else. I did have a nibble on the special quesadilla which was magical in the most cheesy sense.
Pat Casten
Super casual, cute little place. The best burritos in Melbourne. Chips are great too. Cheap, filling and delicious. Friendly staff. Can't go wrong.
FatGuy In A SkinnyGuy's Body
Drop by for a casual bit of chow. The tamales are fresh and generous with the good ingredients. Burrito- although classed as filling - just didn't do it for me. I guess my neglect for not realizing it's vegetarian had me wishing it were choc full of carne. The sauces tasted a little strange too. All in all; good for a quick fun bite
Iris Myandowski
Everything here tastes like tinned spaghetti and there's not nearly enough cheese. But it's so popular that there are people eating takeaway in the freezing cold side alleyway because they can't get a table. I'll never work that out.
Cam Perry
Big fan of this place! Staff was really nice and the interior looked Mexican.
The food came really quick to your table, and it's very tasty (excellent fries). Doesn't burn a hole in your wallet either!

Recommended!
MelbFoodsta
Not a bad little mexican place... probably not what i was expecting but overall still enjoyed it.
Staff were friendly and accommodating, cant book but doesn't take long to get a table.
Expecting more variety on the menu, nachos were ok, highlight would be the Sangria.

Menu choices 5/10
Venue 7/10
N.
Came here on a whim for a late lunch and was super keen for a vego mexican feed. Though the portions were pretty small (we had the taquitos and a tofu taco) and I found the food to be incredibly bland.
The guac was amazing and the salad was rather nice, but please don't go for the taquitos!
Ben Scolyer
This place has the best Mexican in Melbourne . It is worth the Trip to Trippy Tacos, cocktails are cheap as well.
I'm going back real soon..
Cordelia
The girl working there on the 27th July 2015 around 8 at night: fix your attitude. All I asked was a simple question as to why the tofu tacos didn't come with salad anymore (they always did in the past) She basically called me a liar and was incredibly condescending to me. My husband and I have been coming to trippy taco since it opened but would hesitate to come back now. Not only was the service poor, but the portion sizes have become considerably smaller. After spending $45 we should be full but we were still hungry. You're better off going to a pub or a restaurant and getting a real meal. This is basically Mexican fast food that is overpriced. Oh trippy you have made me so sad.
Possum
We love it here. No fuss vegetarian food. We always order the trippy fries and they are moorish. Love the tofu burrito. Highly recommend, it's been round for years which is also a good sign.
Fainzee
First time for dinner here the other night. Good to see it was busy. Took a meat eater here and he even loved it which was great. I had nachos which were tasty, the only negative here was I asked for vegan nachos and they still put yoghurt on top which is obviously not vegan, and the tamales had a strange after taste like bicarb soda or something... So I'd pass on the tamales but the taste of everything else we had was awesome! I would recommend this place but make sure if you're vegan you specify no yoghurt as well as having soy cheese.
J
Awesome vegetarian Mexican. The burritos are huge and I always get them to cut them in half so I can save some for later. Shame it's a bit far of a drive for me to get to!

Trippy Taco is a casual place, serving Mexican food. The menu includes a range of tacos, quesadillas and burritos at reasonable prices, with all items being vegetarian. On a Sunday evening, it was relatively busy, and being a large group, we sat outside. The food did take some time to arrive, with two of our orders needing chasing up. However, the staff were friendly and helpful throughout the process.
I ordered the special quesadilla ($11.50) - a large wheat tortilla with melted mozarella, goats' cheese, black beans, salsa and guacamole. The quesadilla itself was crispy and the abundant filling was full of flavour, with melted quality cheese and freshness coming from the salsa and guacamole. Black beans provided the protein necessary in a vegetarian dish, and I did not notice the lack of meat in the meal. Overall, I thought that the food was definitely worth the reasonable price and even the lengthy wait.

Been coming here since it was originally on Smith St. Gradually, as the years went on I've seen both the quality and service drop off. I've lost count of the times I've ordered take away only to arrive and have the incorrect order, or some sort of mishap that only seems to happen here. When we first discovered TT we told everyone and basically took as many people here as we could. Unfortunately now it's just become a last resort for us.

The chips have this magical delicious dust sprinkled on them that is highly addictive. Beware..............
Fast and tasty, never fails to disappoint.

Simple elements packed with tonnes of flavour and punch. Each dish we ordered had simple regular Mexican components to it (namely, guac, beans, salsa and sour cream) yet stood out because of being used in just the right manner and proportion with the appropriate seasoning. The best part is that most items on the menu are Gluten Free or Vegan but that difference cannot be noted in the flavour, which is always a plus. Would definitely recommend trying the special quesadilla!

The service is quick, staff is super friendly, portions are generous and the food is absolutely delicious.

I used to always get Smith Street and Brunswick Street confused, the thing is, they just both have a bajillion restaurant on them and it's hard to remember what's where! One time, my friends and I were on Brunswick Street, and we literally walked for half an hour trying to find Trippy Taco, because we kept on thinking it was on the next corner, super sad story I know :( A year later, I finally got over that traumatising experience and found it with the help of good ol' Google Map!

Food: amazeballs Staff: amazeballs Space: not amazeballs Wait: Sucks balls :( ....totally worth it though... All the vegan goodness. Trippayyyyy fries till I die!

Tofu asada burrito. This is all you need to remember when you come. Don't worry about the sour cream or jalapeños, I don't even think I tasted them the one time I ordered. Grab a burrito, find your hot sauce of choice and let your stomach smile.

Note: if you want traditional Mexican (US style), this isn't it but damn it's tasty.

Simple and good. Had a lunch and dinner at this place and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. The seating is tight but on a sunny day seats outside are a good option.

Food is always great. Been here many times now and the service is quick, the food awesome and the atmosphere fabulous. Definitely recommend for a quick eat

One of my Favourites!. I don't even know where to start, the food is amazing! The French fries are the best in whole australia I think, thinly cut and sprinkled with paprika powder. The tamales are amazing, the guacamole super tasty, well, everything is tasty! The home made sangria is great too.

Best Mexican food in Melbourne! I'm coeliac and I regularly eat here without a problem :)

There’s a reason this place has been so popular for so long – good service, great food, happy atmosphere, and definitely worth visiting over and again!

I think it’s safe to say it won’t be long before I’m back to sample more of the menu at Trippy Taco – there’s still nachos, quesadillas and other varieties of the burritos and tacos to try and I have no doubt they will all be as delicious as everything I have already tried!

I went to Trippy Taco on Sunday with 2 acquaintances and left with heart burn and a truckers arm. We wait for half an hour for an obnoxious group of individuals, who probably live in Fitzroy, to leave one of the tables outside. One was cleaning his shoe with a napkin. When they finally left, their dishes and leftovers remained at the table for 10 more minutes until we decided to take it in ourselves. I had the Tofu Asada Burrito and tried the chilli fries and nachos. The asada burrito is good, I do enjoy raisins in savoury dishes and I found their secret use of beetroot in the burrito to be interesting. The spices used on the chilli fries left a dry feeling on my tongue and the nachos were average. I just don’t get why people like the chilli fries here. The Reverence do better seasoned Mexican fries. There is a lack of tables for patrons (only 2 outside) and non existent shade outside. My entire right arm and shoulder got extremely sunburnt. I recommend Trippy Taco to people wearing co

Trippy Taco is not to be compared with the dining experience or ambience you would find at Mexican restaurants like Fonda, Newmarket Hotel, Mamasita or Touche Hombre, however Trippy Taco is an easy choice if you are after a quick, cheap and hearty meal, especially if you are nearby on Smith Street or Brunswick Street.

Do you love delicious mexican food? Are you vegan or vegetarian (or can you tolerate meat free dishes)? Can you stand waiting in line with hipsters for a while and eating in a packed restuarant (this being a good sign)? Then Trippy Taco is for you! Delicious mexican tacos, burritos, quesadilla plus a whole lot more. Served with delicious sides and hot or extra hot chilli sauce. Gluten free and vegan options available. No meat on the menu. Get yourself down there and eat eat eat!

Overall I would definately go back and perhaps try the burritos or sweet corn tamale.

Trippy Taco is a popular vegetarian joint in food-happening Gertrude Street. Recognized by its standout orange façade, it was well-patronized by welfare-advocating vegans, hippy vegetarians and even meat-loving carnivores.
Goodhearted
Trippy Taco is a popular all vegetarian restaurant that has been churning out Mexican style fare to hungry Melburnians since 2006. By replacing dairy cheese with vegan cheese, and egg with tofu, almost all of the menu is on offer to vegans. The vegan 'Tofu Asada' burrito ($12.50) is a favourite choice, with spicy chargrilled tofu, salad, salsa, vegan cheese, fresh lime and if you're lucky you might even find a couple of sultanas hidden in there (trust me, it works!).
Epicurean Of Southbank
This seems to be the dining mecca for the hipsters. An innocent and unassuming bunch normally however the popularity of this restaurant with this subculture makes it hard to secure a table either inside or outside. Inside caters for about twenty-five people in a clean space with ample natural light.
Expensive Delicious Habit.
I went for the asada tofu burrito because I'm a sucker for it. All that charry spicy tofu is such a winner. This isn't a meal to eat on a date, because there's juices and sauces and avocado and tofu that will go everywhere. Go with your friends and enjoy yourself...

Despite the Tex-Mex appearance, the food here seams to lean more towards authentic Mexican. (I have to tell this to people who 'don't like Mexican food', when they really mean they are averse to copious amounts of cumin and/or sour cream). I had the 'taco meal', which consisted of two house-made soft tortillas filled with a delicately spiced black bean mixture, fresh salad, goat's cheese and lime. I'll spare you the spiel about how much I love goat's cheese, but it really did make the meal. It just had a great 'freshness' and mix of flav

Hello dear Readers I wasn’t going to blog about any Melbourne places for a little while, because I still have so many posts about Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide ~ But I couldn’t help but blog about our experience at Trippy Taco immediately, because I have a really funny story to go with it. Trippy Taco So the story is, I read Ms I-Hua’s post about Mexican food the night before, and had huge food envy and really wanted good Mexican food, so after convincing Mr Bao that Trippy Taco was the best place to go for dinner It was quite busy for a Saturday night and we weren’t able to get a table immediately, but after a short 10 minute wait, we got a table right next to the bar. Everything was fine, until I looked at the menu while Mr Bao was in the toilet, I realised…that Trippy Taco was a vegetarian restaurant with vegan options LOL And if you haven’t noticed…Mr Bao a 100% CARNIVORE, this man needs his meat He came back from the toilet and the first thing I said to him was, “Listen to me…take
The World Loves Melbourne
Trippy Taco is a fantastic restaurant! And unique! Uber cool - possibly hipster! As a meat lover I love this vegetarian place with it's quality and variety. As a chip lover I consider their fries to be the best in Melbourne with a killer smoky seasoning. Have been known to eat two bowls... Oops! The staff are great here! Engage you and interesting trippy banter. I can kick back and chill here - no formalities... When I wrote this the move was on with change of premises to Gertrude St. Coffee here is excellent apart from the day the coffee machine broke down - but that happens to the best of them! But managed to get a coffee elsewhere - this being Melbourne. Did I mention the Nachos? A small serve was more than enough for a whole tribe! Everything fresh and tasty with a black bean key ingredient… Sort of place you love to come back to… We love doing the double with a visit to Lost and Found then Trippy Taco… Lost and trippy! Get to Trippy Taco!

The tacos and quesadillas looked very yummy, so I’ll have to try that next time. I do have a couple of critiques: a bit too cheesy – overpowered the taste, too salty – all the sauce drained to the bottom of the burrito, and too much tofu – would have better with a mix of more lettuce and more guac. Other than those critiques, there’s nothing stopping me from frequenting this place again! Yay I’m not longer Mexican food deprived!

Famed for its made to order, Mexican menu, as well as it’s vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options, the two of us thought it was high time we actually tried this Smith Street institution. Unfazed buy the myriad of burrito’s and taco’s on offer, we come here to indulge in the chips. My stomach feels as though it is eating it’s own lining, so decide order a serve each. As we wait, I take my surroundings in- and though I do love all things deep fried, I realize that sitting literally three feet away from the actual deep fryer is probably not the best seat in the house. Contemplation of seating aside, the chips arrive. I notice that my serve is slightly bigger than Adam’s, sucker! They don’t come with any dipping sauce, but flavorless they are not. Some kind of smokey, paprika-ey, type of seasoning coats the crispy shoestrings, as it does my fingertips. Conversation between the two of us slows as we tuck into our respective bowls, this signals that the feasting isn’t worth the interrupt

The food overall was pretty good, can be quite filling due to all the black beans. Although portions for the Tacos are quite small for the price, it was tasty nonetheless. Make sure you try the hot sauce that’s provided t

The lime provided a zesty punch that suited perfectly with the herbed salsa and soft, almost creamy-like avocado. The black beans on their own were a little bland (and very filling!) and you needed to make sure your bites were balanced.

Trippy Taco is a casual vegetarian Mexican joint on Gertrude street in Fitzroy. The space is small and gets very busy and crowded but I believe it is bigger than their old premises in Brunswick street. You order at the counter and collect water, serviettes and hot sauce from the table in front of the drinks fridge. I was there with KB1 and KB2 for a very overdue catch-up and before KB1 arrived I took the liberty of ordering a serve of the Trippy fries (French fries with Trippy’s yummy seasoning). They landed at our table just after KB1 did, so perfect timing! It was ageed that these were amazing and moriesh. We couldn’t figure out all the seasoning flavours, but paprika stood out. We then shared a small serve of the nachos (corn tortilla chips topped with melted cheese, smokey ranchero sauce, black beans, fresh salsa, avocado and sour cream). KB1 said these weren’t as good as they looked and KB2 claimed them to be ordinary. I concur. They had the ingredients to be great but ended u

For a few years now Mexican food would have to be classified as my favourite, and places like Trippy Taco have helped me come to that conclusion. With a menu of selected classic Mexican staples, Trippy Taco takes a vegetarian approach but when you eat you don’t miss the meat. Enjoy.

We order lots and lots for us all to share on our first trip to trippy! Quesidilla, large flour totilla with melted cheese and salsa, described as a bit like a big cheese toasty it is comfort food-tastic! Heaps of melted cheese and black beans hmmmmm!! Original Trippy Tacos are fresh, gorgeous corn tortillas with cheese, black beans, salad, salsa, avocado and a squeeze of lime! Yum!! It's a generous serve of super tasty, fabulous taco. The Trippy Chippies are fantastic and finger dying yum!!

I will say that food and drinks were really good. For $11 I got a really big tofu burrito. Which was yummy but cold. I didn't mind it being cold as it was vegetarian with a hint of cheese in there and the tofu was cooked well.
A burrito is a Mexican dish. It can be filled with meat or vegetables and the filling is rolled inside a tortilla. Students when you come to Melbourne you'll get to try this and many more foods which makes Melbourne unique.

Highlight - Trippy fries! Lowlight - Beans and more beans Tofu asada burrito – flour tortilla wrap filled with spicy chargrilled tofu, mozzarella, goats cheese, salad, salsa, avocado, fresh lime Quesadilla with black beans FOOD? We were shopping along Smith Street on Saturday and just before lunch I had a browse on Urbanspoon and came across Trippy Taco on Gertrude. We chose a dish each, shared a bowl of french fries and ginger beer. I highly recommend the Trippy fries with paprika seasoning and freshly squeezed lime juice. It has a strong resemblance to the El Maco shaker fries from McDonald’s. Trippy fries – french fries with Trippy’s yummy seasoning The food came out quickly, fresh and hot on the plate. To be honest both the quesadilla and the burrito had very similar fillings. The former was just more mushy, not in a bad way though. Lots of mozzarella, some veggies, avocado, salsa, and beans, beans, beans!
Sweet And Sour Fork
The chewy chunks of tofu, subtly bitter and smoky from the grill, could’ve fooled all but the most die-hard of carnivores. The tortilla was soft and unusually thin, but then again the burrito was unreasonably huge, so maybe it was a relative thing. I had so much trouble with the size of it that I ended up with salsa and two types of cheese on my cheek, and possibly my forehead too.

...wasn't tremendiously blown away with anything other than their fries. It's the only fries that I don't savour... which sounds like a bad thing but I have a habit of eating fries in small bites to savour the taste. But with these, I shove them so fast down my mouth because it's like an atomic explosion of taste. But today I tried their Quesadilla with Black Beans and my taste buds were left striken by delight. The cheese just sent it all over the top and even though the serving was really generous I devoured it like Apple fans devour iPad 2s. Check it out. It's on Smith Street in Collingwood. They were surprised at how filling the food was, and how delicious it tasted... The burritos arrived in baskets, tightly packed in a paper bag – perfect for take-away. Mine was packed with soft tofu.

When I first mentioned it to someone at work they thought I said something about going for lunch with Tripitaka, presumably to make Pigsys of ourselves. But rather than referring to the androgynous Buddhist monk character from a cult TV series I was talking about visiting Trippy Taco, a small but very popular Mexican vegetarian café on Smith Street in Collingwood. Given that Trippy Taco is so busy, popular response is generally so positive and it should be my kind of food, I was surprisingly underwhelmed by the whole experience. There wasn't anything about it I found particularly objectionable, just nothing about it that I particularly liked either (excluding the delicious dessert tamale). For starters it is small, slightly dark and overwhelmingly orange, and so I didn't find Trippy Taco the best of places to eat. While it has a good relaxed vibe going, it did feel kind of cramped and after a while the overwhelming orange tinge on everything (food, drink, the pages of the book I was r

I love the concept but they need someone on quality control - making sure the burritos are hot and seasoning is right. I gave up after sending mine back the second time for heating, was I sooooo hungry that I devoured a huge lukewarm bean-flavoured clag burrito and most of the serviette underneath it.

What it says on the box. Interesting to odd, mostly very yummy, vego burritos and tacos.

Trippy yes, Chocolatie no!. Revved up my insulin-dependent engines; preceding our entry to this pocked-sized bizarre decked out establishment. We’re carnivores by nature who stay clear from vegan/vegetarian institutions so we wouldn't participate at this particular juncture unless a night out in the area would come to pass strictly for the intention, suspension, and attention towards the ‘Nutella melts.’ Although incomprehensively enjoyable, the melts are quite an artless dish to which anybody can sample up the food chemistry for themselves. A Liberal scoop of ice cream, and a large flour tortilla in a quesadilla fashion which articulates service genuinity to me, but y’all could have gone heavier on the Nutella upon the heavy request guys.

Delicious burritos.... Love this place!

Hardly Hypeworthy. Splashed out and ordered a $12.50 Burrito which was bland and almost tasteless. What is all the fuss about? The young lady behind the counter couldn't even remember what I ordered, 2 minutes after I ordered it. Won't be back i'm sorry! For almost the same price you can get 3x Banh Mi from right around the corner.

Best place for a small budget. Eaten here a number of times and you do no wrong. Fresh, fast and delicious food. Service is always warm and friendly even though you routinely get slammed. Maybe you could turn down the air conditioner on cold days though? Will be returning back here forever.

Didn't know it was vegetarian. -BUT- didn't stop me from enjoying the food. Fries were crisp and well spice. Tacos were amazing, from the savoury to dessert tacos. Can't believe I would love a vego joint as much as trippy taco. Would mos. def. come again. And again and again.

Tofu tacos were really good and yummy nachos. Didn't love the bean taco, but did love the Mojito!

Really decent margaritas. I like the guacamole and salsa but thin warm chips would be an improvement. Otherwise really good.

Vegan Mexican food, need I say more?!. I love that they cater for vegans!
Really flavoursome and fresh and fun (albeit quite messy!) to eat.
It can get pretty packed, so we always play it safe and get early dinner.

Liked the food, looking for a little upmarket place to take guests. I loved the food here. While great fun, it is not suitable for taking official guests. Someone should make a little upmarket version of good vegetarian place.

Good food but too overpriced. I don't mind paying a bit more for quality sometimes but when it's really just glorified Mexican fast food paying $13.50 for two tacos seems a little excessive.

Yummm burritos. Don't make it here very often since it's far away and have only had their burritos but they are always yum. Get yourself a burrito, it's like a mexican kebab. Also you can douse as much hot sauce on it as you want. Perfect.

First time tripper.... We checked out Trippy Taco the other day as a treat for my boyfriend because he loves Mexican food, and I wasn't really expecting to enjoy it. I was very surprised - the food was amazing, and Trippy Taco is now one of my favourite places to eat in Melbourne. I had a vegan quesadilla with the lot I think, which was delicious. My boyfriend had taquitos, which I also loved. The guy behind the counter was helpful and happy to discuss the dishes, and the service was very quick. It wasn't too busy as we went around 3pm for a late lunch. Can't wait to go back there next time I'm in Melbourne.

Amazing. Trippy Tacos menu is amazing and almost everything can be made vegan. Even though the restaurant is small they were happy to accommodate 8 of us!

I've been here several times and have no complaints. Everything I've tried has been awesome.

Surprisingly good. Me and a pack of friends wandered in here part way through a bar crawl.
There were about 8 of us and thought there'd be no way we'd get tables (this place is tiny) but as we all ordered take away tables cleared out and we managed to all fit in.
No mention was made of us sitting down and taking the tables, all the staff were pretty chill.

We didn't realise until looking at the menu that this was a vego place and, as most of us in the pack were massive meat-eaters, there were a few disappointed people and a few weren't fully satisfied without carne.

I, however, really enjoyed my meal, despite being a massive carnivore. I got the tofu assada burrito and it was super tasty. Heaps of flavour, lots of sauce, the tortilla was perfect and all round it was super good. The fries were awesome, I really liked the flavouring which kiiiinnnndda tasted like cheese and bacon shapes... definitely a smokey flavour going on. They have a bunch of hot sauces to choose from as well.

I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here, partly because of the lack of meat options, but if I am back in the neighbourhood in the future I'd definitely give it another go. :)

Not good Mexican. I went to Trippy Taco based on the reviews on Urbanspoon. I have no idea how people think this is in any way good food, you people mustn't ever had decent Mexican before ! The food was bland and had no flavour! The packet Old El Paso is fine dining compared to this place!!! If your looking for good Mexican food you will be disappointed.

Going downhill. My opinion, this used to be a great place, but over the last 3 months they've dropped the ball a bit with overly overly salty chips (and I like my food pretty darn salty), semi-cold and overly salty burritos. Hopefully they pick up they're game, but at the moment I think Vegie bar burrito is better.

I wanted to like it.... I really enjoy Mexican food so I was keen to try Trippy Taco. If you remove the hype the food is just ok and a little bland. I will give it another shot but the burrito was quite dry.

Even with their selection of hot sauces the burritto's were very bland. And considering all they do is tacos, burritos and quesadillas I thought they would have more flavor.

Nowhere near real Mexican food. Australia does many types of ethnic cuisine well, but Mexican is not one of them. Every now and then I stop in some Mexican restaurant here to remind myself of that fact. Trippy Taco was no exception. I went here when I was doing a shift at St. Vincent's looking after someone who was loopy from overdosing on schizophrenia meds and I needed a quick lunch. The bean and cheese burrito I had was technically proficient -- black beans cooked well enough so they weren't tough, cheese melted inside, tortilla was soft... But it didn't taste like Mexican food. And it wasn't just because it was veggo.

For one thing, Mexican restaurants would never use mozzarella cheese in a burrito. The taste and stringiness made me think of a pizza, not Acapulco. The beans weren't mashed up and muddled together like they are in any North American Mexican restaurant. The flavour was insipid compared to authentic burritos -- no chile pepper heat to it, no richness like you get from the manteca -- i.e. lard -- in Mexican cuisine, no cilantro, cumin or other spices that Mexicans use. Anyone who opines that Trippy's burritos are good Mexican food has never been to the Mission District of San Francisco or pretty much any Tex-Mex eatery anywhere in the U.S. Plus the price was too high -- $10.50 for what would be considered a small burrito in the U.S. costing maybe $6.50 in the big Yankee dollar.

Australia needs Mexican illegal immigrants if it ever aspires to have decent Mexican restaurants. Maybe Tony Abbott can have the Navy haul the Indonesian refugee boats to the west coast of Mexico and bring them back full of real Mexican boat people. Until that happens, I'll be giving Australianised Mexican food a miss.

I am not a fan of meat free meals but this place was excellent, fresh and quick. Tacos excellent with plenty of flavour

I've been here a few times and the burritos are always sensational. Really really fast service as well. I've also had the nachos and they were yummy too. Keep up the great work guys! I'll be back for more!

Great vegetarian food. The tofu burrito is actually really tasty, I recommend this place to all my vegetarian friends.

Cheap and Tasty Vegitarian. I have to say I had reservations when I saw tofu used in a burrito however, I was pleasantly surprised at the flavour and contents of my mixed burrito. I never thought a vegetarian burrito could taste so damn good. Yes the service may not resemble what you experience at a two hat restaurant but it’s good enough and at $12 for a massive burrito who cares? IT does get busy during peak times but the turnover at tables is pretty quick.

Very fresh ... Very good tacos and healthy...you can tell because the avocado is always green and perfect...I'm a bit of a freak in that regard. I'm a regular as I work nearby

I ordered a regular burrito, and when I took a bite, I realized it had beetroot in it. And I'm allergic to beetroot.

It didn't say anywhere on the menu that it included beetroot, and it is not a standard burrito filling.

And since they took so long to make it, I didn't have time to get anything else for lunch instead.

I have a bunch of difficult food intolerances and the staff were super awesome with us! They made me a super yummy meal and went CRAZY out of their way to accommodate me. Thanks so much :)

Trippy Tacos food is generally quite good although for a business that states that it does ‘mexican street food’ it is not ‘street food’ cheap. We tried the mixed tacos and they were well done, the tofu taco was particularly tasty and all of the fillings are beautifully prepared but the piece of lime that they came with was ancient.Don’t bother putting lime on the plate if you begrudge buying fresh ones regularly (I know they are dear at the moment). The serving staff on Thursday 3rd October also let the experience down. Very patronising and unhelpful and although this should have little or no effect on the dining experience, sadly it does and owners should realize that visiting a dining establishment is as much about feeling happy as filling up on food.

Hearty feed. I find it hard to go past the tofu asada burrito, it's my Friday treat. Big, hearty, warm and spicy, comfortin and just the right amount of greasy. I like to think that because it's vegetarian that it's also slightly better for me! I'm always left feeling satisfied (perhaps slightly too full, but no complaints there). For a lighter option, the tofu burritos are great.

Despite the constant queue of hungry people always out front of Trippy's the service is fast and comes with a smile. Cheap and delicious. Make sure you order the fries!

The menu is a treasure trove of vegan and vegie options, which was awesome! We shared the Smokey tofu enchiladas, which was nice. The quesadillas were very yummy, but I could taste the cheap cheese. The good thing was that all the trimmings like avo were included, it tasted fresh and the price very good, but I would have liked the option of refried beans, cause I prefer them to black beans.

Cheap and quick. Trippy Taco its a fast food style place i have never tried eating in as it seems to be a bit of a hipster nest but i live round the corner so i will phone in an order and pick up it is nice that it is healthy and easy for the price so i cant really justify moaning about the quality and service i tend to go here in a mcdonalds frame of mind.

Got here early on a Saturday evening and found a table inside without any dramas. Nice vibe, service was fine and the food was delicious. My burrito was huge and flavoursome and I enjoyed having a range of sauces to add. My margarita was fine enough, a little on the small side but for the price, not bad at all. I rather liked this place.

Hit and Miss. Trippy Taco is amazing when it's good but at times can be really poor. I go here all the time because the majority of the time its really, really good. I'm in love with the tofu asada tacos and the margaritas. Have had some really bad experiences here though too, including having an order forgotten about then wrong, then what was brought to me was inedible, and other times the portions are just tiny for what your paying. Just makes it all the more disappointing when you know how good they can be!
Jo
Not my favorite Mexican I needed salt for my breakfast taco. Margarita top notch

Food OK - Avoid Eating In. Thought the food was good, nothing amazing just good. Such a stupid system for getting a table, basically just fight over them, staff won’t help at all. We were told to order our food as there was a 20 min wait and a table would free up, never did we imagine people who hadn’t even ordered food would push in and take tables and when approached just shrug their shoulders, staff wouldn’t assist either, waitress stating "it’s not her job" and suggesting we eat standing up or sit outside when it’s a cold and wet winters night...

Probably wouldn’t go back, would maybe get takeaway in the future if I was in the area but wouldn’t travel to go there out of my way. It is just burritos and tacos so nothing truly amazing in any case.

A vegetarian place meatlovers will be able to enjoy. Per title of review - husband & I are both meat eaters and stumbled upon her after not being bothered to deal with the line @ Huxtaburger.

We've lived in the States so know reasonable Mexican - this definitely meets the grade and is far better than Fonda's in Richmond. Smoked cheese quesadilla was a highlight.

Left feeling full and satisfied - highly recommend.

Trippy Hippy Taco. Not a vegan but absolutely enjoyed the tofu burrito.
love the exterior and the interior (green and orange tiles combination )adding that mexican touch to the place.
tables were small but then again wont be needing them anyway.
will be back

Get take away to avoiding invading on their sacred space. The food definitely makes up for the crappy, arrogant staff. Getting a smile from the front of house staff would be as hard as pulling teeth. Great food tho
Sweetie Gee
The food was good, especially the nachos, but not worth all the hype. A little bland.

Vegan order, given dairy cheese.. I love the food here. The vegan tofu asada burrito is my personal favourite and every time I am in Melbourne I make sure to pick one up.

BUT BEWARE check your burrito before you dig in!
Especially if you are vegan or can't eat dairy.
I ordered the above burrito for takeaway dinner. The lady came out to me and said "Order 47, vegan burrito". This was indeed my number and order so I accepted it.

I took a few mouthfuls as I walked away from the store and noticed the taste was just beans.
I'd had the tofu asada burrito before and knew there were no beans in it. I thought maybe they'd change the recipe and guessed the tofu would be further down. So I took a few mouthfuls.

It was dark so I was just relying on my tastebuds, but I then walked underneath a light and saw cheese in the burrito that was very melted. Most vegan soy cheeses have a very high melt temperature and do not melt very easily. I immediately became suspicious that they had in fact made the wrong order for me.

I ran back to the store and asked them whether my burrito was a vegan tofu asada. The lady inspected it and informed me that it was not.
I was growing increasingly upset as I am a strict vegan for ethical reasons.
They did not seem that concerned about stuffing up the order and how it was effecting me. They casually just brushed it off with a "sorry for the inconvenience, we'll make another one up".

As I waited I was trying to brush away tears and stop from crying with all my might. I was extremely disturbed but they didn't seem that phased with what they had done. After a couple minutes waiting, one guy noticed I was on the verge of tears and offered me a free drink for their mistake. But that was about as sympathetic as they got. I declined the free drink because I saw nothing I liked.

SWEET LIKE CHOCOLATE. Tonight, Zit and I ordered dessert after devouring our usual favourite meals (tacos and nachos). We chose the Nutella and Banana Melt and the Tamale Dessert, something different you know? Taking into account the portion size, price and flavour, I'd suggest ordering the Nutella and Banana Melt to share. A side of ice-cream will complete this dish quite nicely.

-----03 Jun, 2013-----

DELICIOUS. Trippy Taco is my favourite place to eat in Melbourne with my friend Zit.
Alexandra
Great Vegan Options. Yummmmmmmy hot sauce, and i love that they have REAL hot sauces, not wimpy ones. Good food and friendly staff
AlexAvtz
More goodness?. Great food! Have loved it long time, but maybe a menu change is due?
Danielle Jones
Love it!. Awesome food and very cool set up.

Can't go wrong with the tofu asada burrito with extra hot sauce!

Delish. Only problem is way too many people know how good it is and it is ALWAYS jumping! Worth the crowds though.
Jisda_1
A little bland. I went here for the first time today for lunch. I found it to be quite bland and too many beans as others have noted too. I also didn't realise it was vegetarian. The place was quite busy but the flavour wasn't great for me, sorry.
Mexllas
The only Mexican thing about this place is the beer, the imported hot sauces from Mexico and the word 'taco'. Overrated place with nothing close to real Mexican cuisine. It's vegetarian so I guess it suits certain type of people... The Burritos (original) are below average, it's a good cheap feed after a few beers..
Goinghome04
It's fine.... Went here for dinner on a Friday. The staff are really nice and the food comes out quickly. As for the actual food.... yeah... it's okay, perhaps on the bland side. I had the taquitos which I would call adequate and my wife had the original trippy taco tacos which had so many black beans that it made the whole dish soggy. I think it was just lacking a bit of spice/kick/zest. All a bit beige and if we go back we will perhaps try some different dishes.
Markyg76
Gertrude St Goodness!. Trippy's have now become a fav haunt for several friends and I, some days you just crave their special fries and a tofu taco spectacular! Great vibe, gets very busy and run by people who care about great tasting food. A vegie heaven.
Sarah B
Mexi-CAN!. The shop is a little cramped and always full of hipsters -both of which are off-putting so it's always take-away for me! The tofu burritos taste so fresh, healthy and they don't leave a heavy feeling compared to the other Mexican crap that's out there. They are very filling and sadly, I can never finish a whole one - but maybe that's 'cause the Trippy Fries are so freakin' delicious that I can never resist ordering a serve everytime with my burrito. Love Trippy!
Viviennesaysso
Yum...and I thought I didn't like Mexican!. Tofu burrito...smoky and delicious.
Yee Sang
Awesome. Haven't managed a month without eating here - hope I never have to. It is the BOMB ~ love the corn tamale and tacos wayyy too much
Thurnis
If you were to eat a mixed burrito and say you didn't like it, you would be lying. these guys do an excellent job!!!
Moluck
Tofu burrito is the Mexican tits.
Carmen N
Slightly different Mexican, in a good way. Wanted to try Trippy Taco from a recommendation. Cute sit down place, some benches outside. Wasn''t aware that it was all vegetarian! Didn't matter and tasted great! If my boyfriend had of known there was no meat we may not have tried it, but he thoroughly enjoyed it too. Got the Trippy Fries with a Tofu Asada Burrito. Nice amount of Paprika on the chips and the Burrito was fresh. washed it down with Pacifico beer which was tasty! All in all. another great Mexican joint!
Chris Littler
Good. We ordered the tofu burrito, it's was a good size, flavours ok.
Was quite busy, waited about 25 mins for meals. Also ha the Nutella and banana desert, it was nice.
Overall rest prices are maybe a bit on the high side. Staff friendly.
But we wouldn't be rushing back there again.
Matt Connole
There's no meat in any of their food :-( the staff are nice though
Awells70
Pretty good. It's not overly authentic but I don't ever recall them claiming to be.
It's pretty tasty & good value for money. The fit-out is a bit budget though.
RotKW
Lo Siento!. Are you kidding? This is one of the mysteries of Melbourne. Why is it a success? Certainly not because it's authentic and not because it's tasty. I have tried it twice and both times would have preferred to get Old El Paso from the supermarket. Feed it to the dogs and move on.
Lakni
The folks at trippy taco are sitting on a pinto-bean gold mine! if only they kept their kitchen open past 9pm...
Johnny
Love the food. Good wholesome food with a reasonable price
Reality Check
Hit and Miss. Love the vibe of the venue when its busy and all the hipsters are out and about. The food is hit and miss, all items have the same fillings which are often very, very bland. I have eaten here a few times now(mainly due to being dragged along by friends that wanting to go). Good for a cheap eat or a hangover but that's about it.
Dane
Trippy Taco is just the best. I resisted for a while because of the name, thought it sounded cheap and nasty. But I was wrong. Stopped in here today after a big bike ride. Chilled vibe, cool decor, food was incredible, staff were nice. I had a Tofu Burrito with soy cheese. It was simply the best Burrito I've ever had and for $10. Check it out, 10/10 for me.
Dancing Around The World
What an awesome little place. Other reviews on TripAdvisor said "authentic". I'd have to say- no way!!! Fresh and healthy and nothing I generally associate with "authentic" Mexican cooked with real lard vs. oil. No oil or lard- just amazing fresh, healthy, tasty food. Gluten free and vegan friendly- I didn't even notice that there wasn't any meat. ;-) Loved the tacos and nachos. Hubby said his burrito was delish!
Northside
Always the Burrito. I love Trippy Taco's Burritoes. They are so satisfying to eat, a great price and nice and quick. My only gripe is that everything in the resturant has the same filling, its jus served on a different medium (tacos, Burritoes, enchiladas etc).
On one hand it would be nice to have some diversity in flavours across the meal options, on the other hand I always order the burrito, so maybe, who cares?
Getaround
One of our favs. This little place does a roaring trade so get in early to nab a seat. The atmosphere is always big and bright with all types of people chewing down on the mexican cuisine. My fav is the nachos which I get with extra jalapeños to really tantalize those tastebuds. The trippy fries are phenom with lashings of their secret flavoring it is always hard to say no!
Mistermister
Bland. Boring. Cool venue. I love the venue, but the food is average. Too many black beans. They do let you add your tabasco though - bonus. A little dirty tables and baskets seemed like they haven't been cleaned properly. I would prefer go to Zambero's for my burrito fix.
Josephine
Love quik fast fresh friendly & do what ever I want straight up no questions asked. Positive attitude
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
Simple Mexican done well. Special quesadilla was awesome!
Malloriah Carey
Yummy. Kind of bland without sauces, but I like how you can add your own to your spice tolerance. It brings out the flavours perfectly.
Charlie B
Awful food!. This place is always packed so I thought it must be good. A friend and I went there for lunch and I had the mixed tacos - one with beans and one with tofu. They were both awful!
Seriously, Old El Paso from the supermarket is tastier than this. The soft tacos were kind of crumbly, a really weird texture, and the fillings were very bland. No spice at all, but worse still, just no flavour! Also the tofu taco was served lukewarm.
Waitress was miserable and the little table hadn't been cleaned properly.
Never again!
Dan Da Man
Tripped and fallen for TT. The quesadilla special is impressively flavourful and freshly filling. This food should be in my life at least once a week. Great prices, sizes and service too. My Mexican friend liked it a lot, though he found a spelling mistake on the menu (for the tofu tortilla, I think).
Mel
The Tofu Asada Burrito is the most brilliant thing on the menu. I recommend that everyone who comes here orders it and be really surprised with how much the actually shove in the tortilla.
EastVillage
Great food, prices were pretty good and the Mexican is reasonably authentic. It's a but of a free for all and you have to fight for a seat but that's part of the charm. I would go back forsure.
Charlie
Yum Yum Yum..great food n great beer...make sure u have a plan B as it gets very busy
Andy G
Cheap as tacos.. It seems to be a real fad but I have to confess I do love a taco. Cool place and super cheap prices but hated the line to order with pretentious collingwooders all too cool for school with the attitude. Food awesome.
Priscilla-ielasi
Yummy!!!. I love the food & atmosphere here. I usually get the chargrilled tofu burrito or black bean burrito, but all their food is really nice. The have outdoor dining too which is lovely on a sunny day
Tiges
Decent for fast food. Hey it's vego fast food - cheaper than a trip to Veggie Bar. Can't imagine why people would compare it to other restaurants in the area when it's really standing on it's own,,, except for Huxtaburger (if you like those buns).

Tasty take on a burrito, nothing authentic but fresh and flavoursome nonetheless.
Tina BW
Very good for what it is. I liked the Margarita a lot but could have used some ice. Beans a bit bland could use a bit more seasoning. Tacquitos were a winner. My kids lived their tacos.
Meaghan
Beany Goodness. I love Trippy Taco. It's well priced, tasty and has a good vibe. I'm a firm believer that a meal doesn't NEED meat to be delicious and Trippy Taco proves this theory. The Trippys Original Burrito is delicious .
Angelo
Original!. I went there last weekend for this great taco! I ordert an original burrito and it was dream of a taco... very very tasty and authentic mexican classics plus it is a great price. I definitely recommend giving this place a go.
Stevemanphillips
Bland and boring.. Was really looking forward to trying out trippy taco, went last weekend and was so underwhelmed.

The food was really boring and just felt like there was no effort at all.
Gulliver Gullible
Viva Mexico, Cabrones!. As a seasoned traveller to Mexico, I like Trippy Taco.
The place is fairly authentic. In lots of eateries in Mexico the spiciness of the food comes from sauces put on the table. Good effort is made to give vegetarian and vegan options. Sure, you would have a problem getting a tofu burrito in Mexico, but this burrito is pretty good nevertheless!

I like that Trippy Taco offers Tamales, it is a very typical food of Mexico and Central America, but not often found in Mexican restaurants here and in Europe.

Sure, it would be awesome if TT could increase the range of their menu to cover more Mexican specialties.

Staff is very friendly. It is not their fault that this tiny restaurant is crowded and a bit noisy. I wish they had more space.

Best nachos!:)

A favourite. Super popular on Gertrude Street, Trippy Taco is a great cheap option for a decent feed. Frequented by hipsters, students and now the Melbourne foodie elite Trippy Taco shouldn't go avoided. I'm adoring Gertrude Street, Cutler & Co is up the road along with newly renovated Builders Arms Hotel. This is the street to be seen in. I've tried a few different tacos from here, but my favourites are the vegetarian ones. The char grilled spicy tofu one is delicious.
Ray Anthony
Lunch at Trippy Taco. The food was excellent , although it could have been better presented on the plates, and hot plates would have improved the meal immeasurably. The downside was that the front door did not have an automatic closer ,which meant that almost every diner left the door open which resulted in an arctic gale blowing onto already cool meals and frozen diners . Overall good , but can be improved with a little attention to detail .
Robert Ellul
A truly, truly bland experience and one that I will never be repeating again.

My partner and I ordered 4 dishes, every. single. one. came with the same bland, flavorless filling.

Perhaps they should start using meat, this would at least add Somme flair to the cardboard experience.

Probably the blandest Mexican place in Melbourne.
Intan Tan
This place has made me realise that if i were a vegan i would still have a chance to be obese...the foods, the beers, the chilli sauces..EVERYTHING is perfect!! And oh my God the fries! Seriously this place is just the right place when u feel like being naughty but don't wanna get too much guilty feeling afterwards
Joshy Nom Noms
Tofu Burrito. You have to eat it alone, so messy, so good.
Daniel Barwick
Boring, bland and tasteless. Shared with several people and disappointed to find that the menu has literally one flavour.
Coffe Killer 666
Burrito. Is big is tasty and pretty decent on the wallet will forever being going here.
Grace
I loved eating here, food is so tasty , I had some soft tacos and avoided the burrito this time as its quite big! I like the new Gertrude st spot and will def be back !
Red Rooster
Need to lift. Needs to add more flavour to the food dished-up and is a very small pokey place.Good beer selection .
Cant sit and relax at a table when you have customers ready to jump all over you .
Jake Malkuth
Yum town. Great selection of hot sauce to go with burrito fun times. can get quite busy so its a good thing they moved to gurtrude street
DeColonel
Happy place. Only issue : packed during dinner (usually)

However the place is good, a bit pricey but service is excellent.
Food is worth trying, vegan friendly place.
Ideal for take-outs
J
Trippy Trippy. Thanks guys, your existence has made my life so much better haha
These tacos are cheap, popular and awesome.
Beezus
Truly a flip of the coin.... ...on whether you have a good experience here or not as it depends on who makes your food. Sometimes the burritos and quesadillas will be out-of-this-world delicious, other times they will be bland and maybe even taste a bit too funny to finish eating. Good thing there's heaps of complementary hot sauce! Of course if you are eating IN (provided you catch a table of hipsters right as they are leaving) then the staff are completely laid-back and totally happy to make you a new one. The vibe here is great, and while it doesn't have quite the charm of the old place, it's still marked on my map as the place to go for mexican food in Fitzroy. 8/10
Matt
My partner and I went here last weekend with high hopes after a friend recommended this place. We ordered a large nachos and were highly disappointed. The chips were stale and the plate was overpriced for what we received (we could count the number of black beans on our plate). No flavor without adding some tapatio. Definitely not going here again.
Shahanalovesmelbourne
I love vegetarian food. The food here I found very bland. There is no reason for it to be so boring, it's Mexican food it's suppose to have spices and flavor.
City Dweller
Fresh and Tasty. Small venue with a Vegan, Hippy, Student vibe.
Great for a quick healthy bite with a buzzy atmosphere.

$12 meal with a drink, very fresh indeed although lacked a little in flavor.
Condiments on standby help with the extra kick.

Staff were friendly and polite which always goes down well.

Will go back :D
Mifune
Socrates would eat here!. This place has a wired kind of vibe and people just love it. I'm in the love it camp but Swerve is not convinced. I guess I'll have to take her back to convince her.

The hipster intelligentsia would definitely be fodder for Socrates.
Dcee
I dun like it, everything on the menu taste the same, like rabbit food and bland. The fillings always the same, tofu black bean salsa etc. can't feel any tastiness in it
Bcscribe451
Outstanding vegetarian tacos, etc. beautiful black bean burritos.
Rachel
Was so good!. I went to Trippy Taco last week with the girls, had so a great time chowing down my veggie burrito, so god damn tasty! x
Blacklisted
I'm pretty sure the burrito from here gave me Gastro. I can overlook all the hipsters in this place but not the side effects.
Melita Gul
Staff were friendly and helpful, and the place was packed for a Thursday rainy night. Good music too! We ordered a couple of things one being the tofu burito which was a decent size but tasted like crap. The tofu was burnt and the whole thing had this horrible smokey taste. Would definatly not recommend. They remade it for us and wasn't as bad the next time but still only had a couple of mouthfuls. However, the special quesadilla was fab and tasted great!
Josie
Worth the wait!
Wanz
Attention all Mexican Lovers. You MUST try this place !!! fresh, yummy and did i mention YUMMY ???!!!

Vegan options too = )
Tyler Cameron
The vegan tofu asada burrito is a mist have! Plus it's massive so it's great value for money. I've never had any trouble waiting for my meal here either.. Just go before or after the peak times and the food will come out quick!
Wanz
Simple, fresh and YUMZ YUMZ YUMZ !!!!

I only wish they would open one on the west side of town !!!!

Highly reccomend - vego's and non vego's will all love !
Nicole
Love the quesedillas. Although i miss the old shop...well i miss talking to the kitchen staff while i wait for my take away. The vibe of the new place is great. And the quality and price you cannot beat.
Sanpedro667
Tasty good value Mexican. The Original Burrito is a simple but tasty combo of flavours and filling. The smoked tofu in the tacos is superb, as I'm usually a tofu-skeptic. This edges out the Taco Truck for a cheap Mex meal.
Liam Pooleson
Cheap, quick and delicious vegetarian Mexican. Can't fault.
Anna Minbro
Beautiful, fresh, vegetarian Mexican. My favorite is the mixed bean and tofu asada burrito with chipotle. Yummy! We have been going to Trippy Taco for years and don't intend to change that any time soon.
Dave Webb
Service was fast, had the chargrilled spicy tofu burrito and nachos. Both were great, enjoyed the chilli sauces you could add yourself and the nacho chips were nice and crispy with a tasty salsa. Would go again!!!
Michael
Service was poor, tacos were bland.
J.jacqui
The homemade tacos are nice but the fillings are comparable to mad mex (not saying its not yummy). They don't have an air con or a fan which is almost unbearable on a hot day. All in all, a good experience but not a standout
Masha
These burritos will cange your life for the better. They are like chilli-filled, tortilla wrapped boons from the gods of happiness.
Waiter
Reading other reviews, I didn't have high expectations, but you have to take this place on face value. It's not claiming to blow your mind with Mexican food innovations. But it is cheap and cheerful. The serves were generous, with a heap of fresh avocado, homemade chips, chunky sauce and a pile of beans, with a squeeze of lime. For the price I paid, I left very happy
Natasha C
Verrrrrrry nice. Will be back! Loved the tacos and nachos accompanied by the Mexican hot sauces. Corn chips were homemade mmmmmhhhhmmmm. Loved the buzz, so busy, so goooood
Matthew Anderson
Tripy taco seems to be the cool place to go for local hippies between 'occupy melbourne' protests. It's okay... Really cheap for a meal, like $10 bucks - but as a couple of others have said its actually sorta bland in flavor when Mexican should be bursting with a bit of zing! I don't know... Perhaps there stoned out the back Im not sure? That could explain why theyre so slow...
JJ
Burritos are more like a vegetarian wrap and the nachos are slop. Worst Mexican I've ever eaten.
Gingerbreadgirl
Yum!. It's really good, honest, wholesome food. I love the huevos rancheros; a pile of salsa, beans, and avocado with tortillas and fried eggs. Amazing. To those who said it isn't authentic mexican food - who cares? Guilty as charged: I've never been to mexico. But love it for what it is: Australian, mexican-inspired food that's generous and tasty.
Geeps
Good nachos. Service is nice and friendly, nachos were good, tacos and burritos were very ordinary and lacking flavour. But the freshness of the ingredients in the tacos was good. Chips were good, but the highlight was the nutella and banana flatbread thingy...that was nice.

Great concept but the flavours just need a bit more zing.
Rebecca Lim
Good value for $. Had the Original trippy tacos which were simple n tasty. Service was really slow even though I visited the joint at 3.30pm (offpeak)
Michael Rose
Finding it's feet.... Even though the restaurant is still getting off it's feet in it's new location (evidenced by the very slow, but apologetic, service), the freshness and flavour of what's presented was top notch. The bean burrito and a range of taco's that we ordered were mouth watering, and at a little over $10 a pop, it also incredible value for money.

Go not expecting thrifty service (we waited 45min for our meals!!) and you won't be disappointed.
The_d_rock
Vego Mehican. Walking past at lunch time yesterday so stopped in for some food with the fam. I had the classic burrito it was good, but needed the extra chili sauce that was available on the table.
There are alot of hipsters coming and going, but the food makes a visit worthwhile.
Service is pleasant enough too.
Only issue was the tamales were definitely not fresh and caused some issues later.
Jo Q
I was hoping that the 'new improved' location would mean a 'new improved' food menu, but no such luck. The food is still bland, takes a long time and is a far stretch from authentic Mexican. Melbourne really needs a flavorsome Mexican casual spot. And anyone who likes trippy taco knows nothing about Mexican food. Bring back the basics of salt.
Snowflower
Love the breakfast quesadilla! Didn't quite like the original taco as there was a funny taste to it (but it's probably just me not liking the cheese in it). Would still recommend!
Ange Ella
I can't stop the wanting.... Quiet lunch alone, I get a wall table. I ask for a standard burrito but with extra salad and an earl grey tea. The tea has the milk warmed and in the pot like a chai, it's good...damn good. The burrito arrives, hot hot and chilli hot and with the extra salad which suprises me with the addition of sultana's through out, who'da thought fruitiness would work here, but it's so, so delicious. The meal's cheap, filling, and wonderful...win! Service is friendly and quick. Trippy Taco, I was late to get to the party but I'll be the last to leave...
The Deacon
I'm thinking blah to blah blah blah. I had high hopes for this hole in the wall taqueria when I first tried it a few years back. It looks like it could be straight out of East LA or Ensenada, but the food is bland and nowhere close and the service shows that this place is a looooong way from Mexico (where people are nice). Honestly, I don't really get why all the hipster Mexican has to be too-cool-for-school surly in this town (see taco truck). Where's the good honest food?

I had a burrito which was totally unremarkable. I understand the ingredients are hard to come by and it's really difficult to get fresh mexican ingredients. The tortillas though taste like cardboard and the small amount of filling they give you makes for a paltry-sized burrito. And what the heck is that sweet sauce they put in it!? Thankfully this place is loaded with great bottled salsas to douse your food with for flavour.

Beer selection is also great, if you are willing to put down the *GULP* $7.50 for a bottle of Mexican beer. It's worth chasing down your meal with, though, but who said this place was cheap!

Luckily, things in town have changed quite a bit in the past few years and you've got better quality taquerias like High Tech and Mad Mex that care a lot more about the food and much less about the scene (and offer some pretty tasty veggie options).

This place is stagnate.
Joss Marcs
Tofu burrito is a total hit!. Recently tried this place, loved it,h ow could I have missed it before! Quick and easy, great service, cant go wrong.
Shui
Like it for what it is. Heard good things about this pokey little eatery so I braved the crowd and was rewarded with a huge, hot, dripping burrito. Was in a hurry to get somewhere so I ate on the run, which turned out not to be a good idea cos I ended up with beans all over my face and had to go to 7-11 to buy tissues. The burrito didn't blow me away with taste but it was wholesome and filling, and the place is kinda cute so I'll probably be back.
Foodoholic
I can't believe they are still I'm business. Although I loved the idea of the menu, I have to say what we ate was nothing short of revolting. Tofu was burnt and dry, tacos were far from trippy - more like drippy. Nice friendly service but a bit hopeless with getting the order right.
Nicky Broadley
On the fence on this one!!!!. Good food, but very bad service, the waiter with the blonde and trippy clothes and hair isnt adding value or making the place feel good, waiters are meant to be attentive not space cadets, get the service together and the place would be top class and also get an EFTPOS machine the walk to the bank after the meal is a pain. Great nachos though and loose the drum and bass make you on edge while eating
Em Peacock
Totally terrible. I had high expectations of Trippy Taco and I was sorely disappointed. My immediate impression of the place was poor - the space is cramped (though I am informed it is soon to be moved), the music is loud, and the service is slow. I thought perhaps the food would make up for the uncomfortable eating experience, but I was wrong.

I love vegetarian food and I love mexican food, but it seemed as if Trippy Taco went out of its way to take the joy out of both fine cuisine types. My original trippy tacos were flavourless. The soft taco shell was unpleasantly mealy, a little soggy and not quite warm, and the beans were tepid and watery. We also had a side serve of 'Trippy Fries' which were, as far as I could tell, frozen shoestring fries with a dusting of paprika. Though edible, the small bowl was by no means worth the $5.50 we paid for it.

The only thing to recommend this place is low prices and charming, cheerful staff.
Linh
Had the original burrito - it was very bland. I paid extra for sour cream and didn't get it.
Devan
Food was good but for veg/vegan I think a bit exensive for what u get
Allitnils
Not the best experience. Okay, I can see the appealing factors of Trippy Taco.
Personally, I found the black beans overwhelming and bitter. The food was also uninspiring and boring. I ordered the tacos, my partner the burrito. They were basically the same meal in different wrappings.
Thankfully we got a bowl of fries, which were cooked to a crispiness perfection, and the sprinkle of paprika, albeit unusual, was definitely a nice touch.

Apropos, for a vegetarian restaurant, they should cater a bit more exclusively for vegans. They serve non-vegan cheese, with the option of soy. I'd be as bold to say it's not necessary.
Georgia
Ok if you're desperate for a mexican fix. I was super excited while ordering my tacos at this insanely small restaurant. The tacos were average...too many wet ingredients made for a soggy mess after the 2nd bite. The most disappointing thing was the salsa...didn't taste homemade at all. Perhaps my expectations to find authentic Mexican at a reasonable price in Melbourne are unrealistic, but let's be honest here...it's not the most difficult/exotic food to make!
Purple Bear
Trip to Mexico. I have to write to confirm the hype. Trippy Taco serves yummy mexican inspired food at a very reasonable price in a no frills setting.

Mr P and I arrived on a Thursday evening before 7pm and the place was packed. All the tables were taken (albeit there were only about 5 tables squished in the back) and there was a line forming to place orders at the counter. We ordered the tofu burrito with hot sauce, special quaseallida and the fries. I really enjoyed the tofu burrito, the texture of the tofu holds very well and the sauce makes me feel like I'm eating a real burrito, meat, fillings and all. The fries were great too. It kind of reminded me of Maccas fries but with a sprinkling of Mexican seasoning to make it even better.

Yum!

Love it! Tacos, beer, friendly service, although this is a tiny place and is always busy, the kitchen is so fast I have never had to wait more than a few minutes for a table, even with a small group.

Winner. I love this little tiny place. Everything is just perfect - the daggy, tight and low budget interior. Best of all are the TACO's and NACHOS. I've not made the big trip to Mexico like some of my Trippy friends but I always feel like I get a bit closer when I eat here. Not often enough.
Word is they are moving to the slightly up a notch Gertrude St location near Aesop, Birdman Eating, The Organic Baker and Ladro. Me think I need to move to Fitzroy?

Ummmmmmmm.... I just don't know. I'd heard such good things about this place and the only point that i agree with is that it's cheap. Cheap food? Yes. Cheap decor? Yes. Cheap quality of food? Yes. Staff that look a little pissed off? Yes.

The food was just soggy and bland resembling nothing of the Mexican flavours I'm used too which was disappointing.

On the upside two mains and a side of fries only came to $21 which is pretty awesome!

Would try it again just to make sure but first impressions were pretty poor...

Mmmm Burritos. Great for a quick work lunch with the food always arriving within 10 mins. The hot sauce that comes with the dish isn't really hot but there are loads of additional hot sauces to add
yourself,
Very small and cramped so looking forward to the move to Gertrude St in the next few weeks.

Tiny and grungy; good food and nice prices. Not a first date type of place, more of a lazy weekday feed.

Good veg mexican food bt slow & lacking in service. Went there for dinner and it was pretty busy. The waiter couldn't be bothered and suggested we 'takeaway' instead. We decided to takeaway and it was still quite a long wait. We even managed to get a table before the takeaway was ready, so we decided to have it there. One of our orders came wrongly, but the kitchen staff did give us the correct order after we told them about the mistake. The food overall was pretty good, make sure you try the hot sauce that's provided there but make sure you have a glass of water near. Not sure if we'll be returning anytime soon but would recommend anyone going to try the Tofu Asada and the Original Burrito

And they have wine!. One thing that's put me off trying this place is I thought it wasn't licensed, but they have wine and it's not bad either! Or have a beer if you like. As for the food, they use good fresh ingredients and really good value. Nice staff too. Try the tamales for something different and sweet as a side.

Tasty quesadilla. The special quesadilla was delicious, but I didn't like the flavour of the tamale.
Service was nice & quick. Value for money is pretty good. Overall, I was happy with my meal.

Trip me out anyday. Love this great value for money lunch spot. A bit dingy, not great service but hey the food is great and very cheap. Try any of the tacos (soft style) and the ..... In fact you cannot go wrong.

Iffy Taco. Schme...Just schme.

Great food, it's our office's regular lunch venue. Burritos are brilliant. Nachos good. (Not sure about sultanas in the salad - why would anyone do that to an otherwise perfect SAVOURY dish?!) The only bummer is the staff, they are mostly grumpy older types who really need to lighten up and perhaps smile once a year. Really really miserable to each other and to clientele. Unfriendly service aside, the food is darn tasty, cheap and sizable.

I heart Trippy Taco!. I am quite surprised to see some of the bad reviews of this place because I loved it! I had never heard of it before but a friend wanted to go there. It is very small - only seats about 15 inside, 4 outside. There is no table service, which is the only part I found annoying because the table we sat at still had the previous occupants' leftovers and drinks and the table was dirty.

But you go there for food and the food is GREAT! I had an original burrito and thought it was divine... very tasty and authentic mexican. Another bonus - it is a great price. I definitely recommend giving this place a go.

Tofu tacos FTW!. Ohhh the tofu tacos here are amazing. I crave them every day! Great spot for vegetarians. Prices are great, staff are pleasant, and they do great drinks too. The chai is yummeh. A bit crowded, but worth it for good noms.

Nope. Everyone raves about this place. I love mexican food but it is so hard to find fresh tasting stuff, which is what you want really, otherwise you would just go buy a can of refried beans for dinner.
I went with a friend and I felt like ordering lot's of food and having a beer in the sun. My friend had heard the burrito was good so we ordered the vegan asada tufo buritto, the vegan taquitos and some corn chips with guacamole.
One thing for sure was that the burrito was a mistake, it was pretty much just all this tofu that was overcooked and tasted like burnt spice inside a soggy bit of bread. They seemed to add some kind of "salsa" that was more like cooked tomato sauce. Could not eat it at all.
taquito was okay! corn chips were deluxe!
Over all, overcooked, not spicy, not fresh, actually kind of rubbish.
The beer and corn chips were probably the only thing i would bank on.
I may go there again but will not be expecting much.
Definitely not a place I would recommend.

Wow. My sister has been meaning to take me to Trippy Taco for about a year now, so as a spur of the moment decision we went there for lunch. I ordered a Special Quesadilla, filled with avocado, black beans, tomato and a few other things.
But who know melted goats cheese could taste so good! I'll be definitely going back to try some other things on the menu next time I'm near by.

Terrible Taco!. I was really excited to hit this place with all the great reviews out there! They were ultra busy, so I opted to order a beer & chill outside (literally - it was freezing!) while we waited for a table. 15 mins later, I returned to order and noticed 2 new people seated at the table of 4 that had just come free. I asked the staff "had we missed out on the table?" and was told he wasn't watching. I reminded him that I had been waiting outside for him to come and get me, and he replied that he was busy, had too many things to do and couldn't do "everything around here". This went back and forth, but all I got from him was a shoulder shrug and a "Oh well". Stupidly, we ordered anyway. My friend is allergic to capsicum and asked if all the food contained capsicum - this took the guy 3 times to answer her asking if she was eating take-away or not ??????? Then she told him she was part of our table that had been denied a seat inside. A half bowl of fries came out cold and the waitress said sorry, and she would bring out another bowl..... but didn't (we had to ask her for it). Then our mains came out... all cold. My sister's burrito had so many beans in it, it exploded into the little basket like a mass of wallaby droppings!! My other friend couldn't eat her taco at all.. and mine was only bearable because I was so hungry!!!

To top it all off, while we finished our meals, the guy from inside came out and said to a number of people waiting "Come in, your table is ready" !!!!!

Will NEVER go here again.

Amazing. Some of the best South American vegetarian/vegan cuisine you will find in Melbourne and a crazy low price. I love this place even if it can be a little hard to get a table.

Having left San Diego 3 months ago and settling here, I was relieved to find Trippy Taco and it's great burritos. Nachos were so-so but got the job done. It was the regular house burrito that did the trick. Beware meateaters, there is none here.

When I die, bury me here!. If I'm in the area, I always eat here: the food is perfection, and the busy staff are always friendly.
It can be tiresome waiting in line, but the payoff is delicious.

Awesome Mexican. Actually the best. Usually quite busy so can be hard to get a table as the place is tiny, can be a bit slow but well worth the wait. Love the place!

Collingwoods best kept secret... For locals in the know this rad little spot is one of the many cool things about Collingwood.

The tofu tacos or burritos with soy cheese are my reccomendation but im a sucker for the trippy fries..

...nachos... chipotle.... special sth american hot chocolate! what more could one want.

My favourite spot for coffee (im a soy drinker & a coffee snob) and a guaranteed way to get me out of bed on a saturday.

The Trippy ladies make them burritos with love and make this cantina one of my favourite places to eat.

Go. Just go. Tasty, affordable and fun. Even I you can't get a seat, take it away. Go!

This little place is amazing. Very delicious burittos and they even have gluten-free dishes!

As a Mexican I know it's too much to hope to find authentic Mexican food but for Australian standards this place is not too bad. The service is very friendly and the food is close enough to what they eat in northern Mexico or the southern US. It's sad that there are no other good Mexican places to have breakfast around Melbourne.
Anaya
Hella yes. Delicious burrito goodness - ask for it hot and use the hot sauce bottles for extra zing!

Great newcomer to melbourne! Food is fresh, fast and delicious! They even have vegan cheese and I'm comforted by the boxes of avocados they had ready for use. Nothing worse than fake avocado guacalmole. Unpretentious, this place doesn't pretend to be anything it is not. All this and cheap too! A must try!
Miffy
A-MAZ-ING Mexican!. We had an amazing lunch at Trippy Taco. The most real tasting Mexican food I've had in Melbourne. The nachos were fantastic, full of flavour and yummy black beans. The taquitos were crunchy and the salad it came with was fresh and tasty! We have yet to taste the Trippy Fries but I'm sure they'll be awesome too!!! Seriously good!

To my glee, there was also a breakfast quesadilla on the menu so I decided that I’d get that to see how it compared to the breakfast burrito. The tortilla is really soft without having that tasteless doughiness. The fillings are delicious. If you were rea
MEL: HOT OR NOT
At hippy Trippy Taco, you can get XXX HOT. Just pour some of the XXXtra HOT chilli sauce that’s provided at each table on top of your quesadilla, taco, taquito, burrito or nachos. It delivers nose-sniffling, mouth-numbing heat and is the perfect antidote

The servings are generous, staff are down to earth and friendly, service is good and food is delicious. Well worth a visit.

All I wanna say is the seasoned shoestring ‘Trippy Fries’ are way too good to not get a mention in my Top 5 Eats of THA Moment. A mix of slightly sweet and salty, one basket as not enough. We also grabbed a Sweet Corn Temale steamed in a corn husk – also a killer. Think piping hot mashed up sweet corn with a squeeze of zesty lime. WOOOP!
