Review Madame K's Vegetarian - Fitzroy

Ruby
The best vegan place out of many I’ve tried so far in melb. Their duck pancake is beyond AMAZING. I wouldn’t have been able to tell that they’re mock meat without getting told (I’m a meat eater) the prawn salad was also really good the Konjac prawns were just too good. The salad that went with it was quite raw without too much dressing but still I loved. The warm pandan coconut dessert was really good too I’ll definitely be returning very soon.

A 100% vegan Thai feast like this is not only gonna make you lick the screen and drool all over your phone, but you’re also bound to fall in love with @madamek_vegetarian What we had here: Lamb slider, vegan lamb meat is used to make these sliders, so packed with flavours, must try Curry puffs, such beautiful Thai flavoured filling, making it an addictive entree Thai Spicy Salad, perfect for spice lovers, so refreshing yet absolutely mouthwatering to eat this salad made of alternative lamb meat, green apple, lemongrass, chilli, cucumber, greens, lemon and fresh herbs. Strongly recommended. Crispy pork with Chinese broccoli, served with brown rice, alternative pork meat is used, which has such a similar real crispy pork taste to it. Loved it absolutely, very fresh and satisfying to eat this. Must try. Tofu cashew nut stir fry, served with jasmine rice, such a tasty and a lovely comforting tofu dish laced with cashew nut and fresh greens. Definitely a must try. Banana roti served with soy vanilla ice cream, this is a mind blowing and an incredibly delicious dessert that’s hard to resist. The roti is super crispy with a filling of banana and topped with agave. We also had two super refreshing drinks, fresh coconut drink and drinks fed coffee with icecream. This vegan Thai feast is so unmatched and you won’t find this beautiful flavours and taste anywhere else in Melbourne. Another great thing about them is the prices, oh my, they are absolutely affordable and pocket friendly, and the quantity is super generous as well. Great service with a lovely, cheerful and helpful team of staff. Do visit this restaurant @madamek_vegetarian and explore the fantastic Thai vegan spread they has to offer.

Last Tuesday we went to Madame K in Fitzroy for a vegan Thai dinner. They have a beautiful and cosy space, perfect for date night or catching up with friends 🥰 I definitely recommend their Crispy Prawn Salad because these vegan prawns really surprised me 🍤 We had Pad Thai and Massaman Curry for mains and they were the perfect comforting dishes we needed on a super cold night ❄ To finish our meal we ordered the Banana Roti which comes with ice cream and fresh fruits, this was such a beautiful dessert 🍌 Featuring: 1️⃣ Curry Puff 2️⃣ Madame K’s Pancake 3️⃣ Crispy Prawn Salad 4️⃣ Pad Tai 5️⃣ Massaman Curry 6️⃣ Banana Roti 7️⃣ Fresh Coconut Drink 8️⃣ Iced Chocolate

The best vegetarian restaurant in Melbourne! Every bite is bursting with flavours. The texture of the "unreal" meat was spot on - close enough to associate with the real thing but somehow it made me prefer the plant-based protein ingredients than actual meat! The staff/owner definitely exudes the Madame K vibe, so friendly and cute! Can't wait to go back ❤️

Madame K is one of Melbourne’s most iconic fully vegan restaurants, serving up an extensive Asian food menu with dishes like Thai curry, satay “chicken”, and Chinese stir fry! Highlight dishes were the Lamb Slider (the crispy roti is so good!) and Crispy Prawn Salad with sweet chilli Mayo sauce (the prawns are made with konjac)! Their mock meats are delicious and can definitely be enjoyed by vegans and non-vegans alike! And don’t forget their Banana Roti for dessert! The roti here is super crispy and flakey, you can’t go wrong!

Love love love Madame K's, my husband and I have been coming here for 5 years and every time the food is just delicious. The 'lamb' sliders are a must get as is the mango sticky rice. I have brought many non-veg people here and they all love it too. A true Melbourne institution.

If every vegie dishes can be as delicious as they made, I am willing to be a vegetarian. Love every single dish we had there. I'm so surprised that they could make the vegie prawn taste like real prawn!

Waitress is not very helpful. When I found something in a spoon and asked her to change a new one, she is not happy. When my friend asked the more sauce for entre, she said she would charge for it. My friend is very slow eater so I stayed the restaurant longer than normal but there are always spare tables for coming customers. The waitress has kept asking my friend if she finished the dish or not. When some time was gone, she came and asked that table was booked for other customer even there are more than 2tables left in restaurant. The food is just ok not very good level.

I went to the Williamstown outlet and it was amazing. A lot of options to choose from. The food was really good. My friend was a non-vegan and he enjoyed them too. The lady who owned the place served food and she was absolutely lovely, friendly and very welcoming.Totally worth and highly recommend the place.

My family and I went to New Williamstown Madame K last night! This place is amazing, so tasty and once you go you can never go back to boring old thai!! Amazzzing & so glad she is now here in the west

Lovely staff, great food, super affordable as well. Highly recommend!

Went to the Williamstown restaurant last night for dinner with the family. Food was delicious and service was excellent. Our 2 girls even enjoyed their meal. Definitely eat there again. Thanks for a great dinner

Had another great family meal here at Williamstown. Love this place

This just opened in Williamstown. If anyone’s vego or veg-curious, or not, get over & try it. It was one of the best I’ve had!
Juntima Potisarattana
Not a vegetarian myself but the food surprised me a lot. All were fantastic. Service was great and people were so nice and everything was wonderful. I could not praise enough. Definitely going back again. Thumbs up!

Best food and service ever. We dined at the Williamstown restaurant and loved it. beautiful healthy food.
Bernadette Bernadette
Food is fresh and tasty. Love the faux Peking Duck and mashed potato short soup and dumplings. Tom Yum soup is tasty and spicy, would love to see more green vegetables in it. Wait staff are always friendly. Highly recommend this place

I just found this random vegan place and it was amazing! Thank you!

The staff were very attentive and friendly. The food servings were very generous and all reasonably priced. And the food was amazing. Looking forward to going back.

Just had dinner here for my birthday, absolutely loved it! Great service and our table of fifteen odd people had the whole upstairs area to ourselves, lovely food that pleased the vegans, vegos and meat eaters. Thanks!

The Fitzroy location is hands down my favourite restaurant. Not just in Melbourne, in the world. The food is always delicious no matter what you order, it’s BYO, the staff are lovely, it’s in a great location & it’s ALL vegan! What’s not to love? I love this place so much, a few years ago I had my 21st celebrations upstairs. I chose Madame Ks over a party! I always take groups of friends here and everyone loves the food even if they’re not vegan. My favourite things to order from here are the satay chicken skewers, the lamb sliders, pad Thai, lemongrass duck and massaman curry. Although I think I’ve tried almost every dish on the menu and I’ve never been disappointed. If you haven’t been to Madame Ks.. you’re missing out.

We had a memorable meal at this lovely restaurant after the restrictions eased in Victoria( would be best to call them directly to book a table). We ordered the curry puffs, prawn salad, BbQ duck roast , Nasi goreng , roti for the toddler and stir fried Tofu with cashew sauce...It was an absolute delight..our favourite dish was the BBq duck roast ,one for the spice lovers!! We were stuffed to move on to dessert..however can't wait to come here again to try more on their menu.

One of the best vegan restaurants on Brunswick street, in my opinion. Madame K’s has a varied and pretty affordable pan-Asian menu, featuring a range of mock meats. One of my favourite dishes is the massaman curry, which comes with a super chewy but tender and nicely flavoured vegan lamb. The sweetness of the sauce lends itself well to the accompanying sweet potato mash, although you can also get it with rice. Another great thing about this spot is that they offer BYO at a pretty low price of $1 for beer and $3 for wine. All up, this is a great spot for vegans and vegetarians or their friends.
Jennie T
I like the food here! tasty, delicious and vegan. Not kids friendly place I guess, because of small table arrangement and not much space. I will come again to try different dishes for sure.
Rita Tam
Hi, this place states they’re vegan, but if you look into their pantry near the toilets, they do use fish sauce and curry paste that contains shrimp. If you’re not fussed, then they’re a great vegetarian option.
Melbourne Lifestyle Blog
Madame K’s is a hot spot for vegans and hipsters alike. Along the busy strip of Brunswick Street, it has built a name for quality vegan food that’s full on flavour. It is best to share, then you get to try more. Here on a Saturday night, it was packed. The betel leaves were a flavour explosion with quinoa, cashew, coconut and a sweet tangy sauce.

I had the Char Kwai Teow with ‘Chinese pork’ and wow, was it good!!! I’m not vegetarian, but that faux pork was to die for, and dare I say, better than the real deal. Also, they have the most delightful, buttery roti. Highly recommend.

Below average.<br/>Went here on a Tuesday night, after hearing great things about it. Whilst the food was pretty good, the service was very very bad. Completely unattentive, we were about to leave as we were waiting so long to get our order taken. The restaurant was half empty, I'm not sure how they would of managed if it was any busier. <br/>The food was rather nice, but the Japanese curry had formed a bit of 'skin' on it when it was served to us. This didn't affect how it tasted, but rather it was another sign about how the service was lacking.<br/>There are many other restaurants along Brunswick st that offer a similar cuisine, and I'll be trying them out before going back to Madame K's!
Ash.m.watters
A great variety of vegan, Asian fusion cuisine. The owner is lovely and loves a chat, so does my family! The restaurant was packed! I love how they also offer faux meat in their dishes as well.
Whalesfoodadventure
Very friendly service. Got the roti and peanut butter which was amazing. Roti was very fluffy and “buttery” the peanut sauce had heaps of flavour. Korean fried chicken tasted good, very tender. The eggplant was cooked really good with amazing sauce

As a Vegan. I found this place very Average and overpriced. Meals labeled “Large” and near on $20, like the Mixed vegetable stir fry, came with a serve of rice and a half a cup of poorly sauces vegetables with far too much bland tofu. Would not recommend.
Lisa Ann
what a beautiful dining experience with a warm and relaxing ambience, attentive staff, and amazing food with many options on their exciting and inventive menu. I cannot wait to return to experience the same dishes again but also explore all of the other options - everything that came from the kitchen looked and smelled divine although we were extremely pleased with our choices of spring rolls, pad thai and cashew nut stir fry veggies with jasmine rice.<br/>thank you for a lovely evening and please have a table ready for my return very very soon!!
Kaypee05
The food was delicious and full of flavour. Completely enjoyed the meat free dinner. Although the info says Full bar available, but it is only BYO. There is no alcohol available at the venue.
Alex Mihaljevic
My boyfriend (who isn't vegetarian) and I went to Madame K's last night for my birthday. He is normally reluctant to try mock meat but couldn't stop raving about how delicious the food was for the entire meal. We had satay skewers, laksa & green curry. We can't wait to come back again to try some more!
Carmen N
Regardless of whether you're Vegan or not (I'm not), this was extremely tasty Thai food. The restaurant is quite small a d we were the only ones there for a 7pm dinner but the people rolled in and hour later. Service was good.<br/>We ordered the Lamb Sliders for entree. 1st pic, not sure why their sliders, but regardless it was very tasty. Then ordered the lemongrass duck, pad thai and panang curry. The curry was one of the best panangs ive had! Pad thai was quite tasty and fresh and the lemongrass duck had a great flavour.<br/>Would 100% go back! My friend lived it too!
Toby Chen
Very nice vegan food for a reasonable price. Highly recommended for those who have trouble finding decent vegan food. Score was lowered due to such bad service, sorry to say. Felt very ignored even though it was a considerably quiet evening.
Steven Gu
Madame K vegetarian at Fitzroy. My favourite Thai food plus vegetarian comes out to be a good combination. Nice veggie chicken satay and laksa soup. Very good and must have a try.
Hungry Caterpillar 🥑
Service was lovely but food was fairly average. Some traditional dishes were quite unusual, with odd flavours that didn’t seem to work well together. Unfortunately I don’t think the quality of the ingredients used were very good.
Ktmoh
I was talked into visiting this place by a friend. the place is small but cozy with tables close together but not intruding on each other. The wait staff are all very nice and attentive. However for me the food was the star of the evening as it should always be when you go out for a meal. we tried a mixture of small and large plates which I have had previously in there non vegetarian form and found the taste to be extremely close to the real thing. Some of the sauces like the mussman curry were very nice and were complemented by the mashed potato they had with it. I will visit this place again for sure.

I love any good vegan/vegetarian Asian food. This is a good one. And you can pick anything from the menu without fearing a secret meaty broth.

Ordered: <br/>Lady Finger Rolls (v): Vegan spring rolls with cabbage, carrot, corn, peas and glass noodles served with sweet chilli sauce (4pcs $8.90)<br/>Skewed Chicken Satay (v): Grilled marinated wheat protein chicken skewers served with peanut sauce (4pcs $9.90)<br/>Sukiyaki(v): Japanese style vermicelli fried noodle, sukiyaki sesame based sauce and baby corn, vombok, enoki mushroom served with sliced prawn and silken tofu ($17.90)<br/>Massaman (v): Slow cooked mushroom made lamb curry topped with cashew nuts served with mashed sweet potato ($17.90)<br/><br/>Review: <br/>Unfortunately, instead of the semblance of a balanced meal we got an eclectic arrangement of ingredients. <br/>The Sukiyaki, although on chef's recommended, was notably bitter due to the large chunks of vombok which really left the acrid taste. Personally, I would consider blanching it in attempt to get rid of the bitterness and to soften the texture but just enough so there was still the crunch. Overall though, the balance of dish leaned far into the salty region which wasn't too my liking. <br/>Skewed Chicken Satay was recommended by the waiter and as someone who is open to vegan food, but not vegan, it just wasn't right. The texture was extremely chewy and the flavour was not pleasant - not matter how hard we tried to douse it in peanut sauce. <br/><br/>However, the star of the meal was the Massaman! Creamy curry with favourable crunchy texture from the cashew nuts is a positive. The mushroom made lamb also reminded me of lamb ragu, when the meat is very tender and falling off the bone which leaves a pleasant eating experience. <br/><br/>Unfortunately, apart from the one starring dish, the others were misses. There's more places to explore in Fitzroy and I doubt I'll be back here any time soon.

Best pad Thai ever! Not greasy and full of flavor. We also really enjoyed the wonton that was flavorsome and had texture. Service was very friendly. What a great find.

This was the first time I went to a vegan restaurant, and it was a great experience ~<br/>Curry had great flavors, fried rice was delicious and love the mock prawns with mayo!<br/>Didn’t know vegan food tasted this nice 😋<br/>Can’t wait to try other things on the menu 💕

I've been here a few times, some times it's a hit or miss..<br/>Last time we went, we made a reservation, sat down then got told to move, three times...<br/>Food is quite good though, brilliant menu.

Madame K serves Delicious food and staff provide great service. Seating is a bit tight, however you do get used to the cosy atmosphere. Would definitely revisit.

Small yet cozy atmosphere & very healthy/fresh meals here! Friend & I got the classic gado gado & pad Thai both of which were delicious & filled with fresh vegetables! The pad Thai tamarind sauce was highly authentic & noodles were served with a generous amount of peanuts & large tofu chunks which were perfectly cooked- crispy on the outside and soft in the middle which was very satisfying! I will definitely be back to try more of their delicious dishes (entrees all looked good too!) Also the staff weren't pushy to kick us out even after 30 minutes of sitting & talking at the end of our meal (we tipped them!)<br/>~<br/>OK so I came back here the other night & honestly I was rather disappointed. My cousin & I shared 4 entrees for almost $40 & both were still quite unsatisfied! Whilst I would 100% recommend the satay chicken skewers the miso glazed eggplant we were served was very burnt & unpleasant as a result!

We had takeaway from Madame K's because my boyfriend didn't want to worry about what of the menu he could/couldn't pick (trying to only eat freerange meat). Everything we had was very delicious!!

By far one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Melbourne, hands down. Just had a delicious meal, tried many of their dishes between a table of four. Sooooo good. Thanks!! Highly recommend and will def be back.
Belle Eats Melbourne
No frills vegetarian kitchen on Brunswick St. Atmosphere isn't anything to write home about but the food was tasty enough. I had the laksa which had weird fake meat and prawns in it but was very flavoursome. Food on the menu has a Malaysian/Indonesian bent.<br/>Lots of faux meat on the menu which isn't really my cup of tea. <br/>The place was fairly cheap but probably a bit expensive for what it was. The service was great. <br/>On balance, I think there are far better places to eat on Brunswick St.
Rivers.lisa.p
Delicious vegan gluten-free Laksa and Penang Curry. Attentive wait-staff; excellent recommendations. Looking forward to returning a third time.

Pretty happy with my experience at Madame K despite my friends being hesitant to try it. Their cuisine is similar to that of loving hut and was well priced. I ordered the lemongrass duck which was delicious and the perfect serving size for me. We then shared the coconut mouse (again yummy, but tiny serving size) and the sticky rice (which was average for Asian desserts - could be made better with more tropical fruit like maybe some mango or jackfruit) ☺️ Thank you for the great service.
Steph McKinnon
Unlimited vegan options and pretty good with gluten free. Would love to see some gf small plate options though. Food hits the spot and staff are friendly. Wish I went here sooner!
Liv Harris
So cheap, so delicious and 100% vegan. What more could you want? <br/><br/>A group of 5 of us came in last night, we were sat straight away. Service was excellent and food came very quickly. I'll definitely be bringing my family back!
Kim
Love this place and definitely want to return asap!<br/>Prices aren't too bad, food is AMAZING, good serving sizes, employees are lovely. Love that the menu is 100% vegan. The green curry is super delicious I can't wait to come back and try the sticky rice dessert
Mick James
I celebrated my 50th birthday there last night with family. None of us are vegan or vegetarian but we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The owner is the happiest person and always made us feel very welcome. The meals were well presented and the flavours were fantastic. The atmosphere is good,I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone and I will be going back again.
Adele W
Fantastic! We ordered the massaman curry, pad thai and duck stir fry. All were amazing. The quality of the faux meats was almost unnerving, particularly the duck and in the curry. Very reasonably priced, large portions, friendly service! Staff are very accomodating to any changes to the menu. We also tried the iced chocolate, which was delicious and was very generous with ice-cream :p soy of course!!
Chocolate.Factory
Great little vegan restaurant. Nothing beats that feeling of relaxing at a restaurant & not over analysing the menu; looking for vegetarian options or for meals that can be converted to a veg option. You can sit down, chill and choose from a plethora of meals to enjoy.
Brian Vanega
This is a gem of a Vegan place! Not overly trendy, just small and low fuss which suits it. <br/>I can never go past the Madras, warning-hot, but all the dishes that come out look great <br/><br/>Super friendly staff. <br/><br/>Place is now a favourite of ours!
Mi55Bee
I would say food was okay since you cant find any vegetarian thai restaurants. The portion was small so we had to order a few extra to shre. Had the green curry, basil stir fry tofu, tom yum soup, massaman curry, prawn salad and crispy saltpeper tofu. They dont have thai milk tea which is bizarre. Found ants in my tom yum soup , sent it back and the waitress asked if it was crawling on the table as it wasnt from their kitchen - how not helpful!

Wife took me and the kiddo here for my birthday - I am so happy we went there. We ordered Steam Wantons for entree, a green curry and a nasi goreng and a vegetarian japanese curry: The food was very good! The creativity and simplicity of the food left me feeling very happy we went there and this was one of the best asian-vegetarian we have been to. We didn't go there because we wanted to taste (vege) lamb or chicken! We went there purely for the vegetarian asian they had to offer and we absolutely loved it.<br/><br/>Will go again and strongly recommended.
Yi An Chan
A great dining experience at Madame k's vegetarian. Highly recommend to those who are expecting authentic Asian cuisines in vegetarian/ vegan option!<br/>Green Curry - was the best of the night, sweet yet mildly spicy, five out of five!<br/>Nasi Goreng - to me, it tastes just right, but to my friends, it's a bit too spicy.<br/>Pad Thai - authentic Thai dish!<br/>Two desserts are so so - which is understandable, they are not dessert experts. <br/>Overall, service was good, tho dining environment is a bit packed.<br/>
Cassie
The best tom yum around!!! I get the tom yum soup almost every time! It's a small portion (but perfect size for me!). I've also had the Thai 'lamb' curry, the mock meat looked and tasted like real meat so it kinda freaked me out (I am vegan) but the flavours were great!
Hungry Polar
Miss A a vegetarian friend recommended this place and to my surprise we really enjoyed our weekday dinner and birthday celebration!<br/>Place was nice and clean, service was prompt and was surprised it was also packed for a Tuesday.<br/>Food was surprisingly fusion and good, I would recommend it anytime! The fried soba noodle is a must try!
Charli.jay
Awesome! I came here for the first time last night, the food is so yummy! I especially loved the tom yum, out of this world and everything on the menu is  vegan. The atmosphere is nice, the food is a win, the staff are so friendly and sweet and the prices are really reasonable, we fed 3 people for $65!  I'll come here again. Thank you!
Bhawna Gi
True substitute for those who have given up eating meat and miss it. Good presentation and comfortable seating. Food was good. Can go again and try more dishes.

Meet up with some friends whom were keen to try this place out. We had for entree - chive dumplings (nice but a bit oily), duck pancake ( the texture is somewhat odd), roti (which we all enjoyed tremendously) and the spring rolls ( nothing special). <br/><br/>Mains were lamb madras which was nice and spicy. Tofu stir fry which was great. The panang curry was just a bit too rich. Nasi goreng was a bit too oil.<br/><br/>The staff was great and good service. We enjoyed our meal there.
Glassed
Ate the morrocan lamb (mock meat) thing over rice. Was pretty great although I am dissappointed I missed the opportunity to ruin a fellow eater's Instagram food pic. Next time I promise to punch the next soon-to-be photographed rice bed. The pancakes were good, so was the other thing I got. Go here.
Rhi Abblitt
I love this place, I wish I lived closer. I have loved all the different food I have tried on the menu so far (at least 8 different dishes, mostly entrees) the vegan lamb sliders are my favourite. Although the tables are a bit squishy and sometimes staff seem like they don't know what's going on. On a few occasions staff have asked to take our order even after we had already ordered with another staff member. This is an easy fix with simple communication. But the food is sooooo good I will continue to go back and take all my friends!!
VegoLover
"Order online" function was fantastic and an efficient way to order take aways. Suggest adding the spice levels via number of chilies or "mild, medium, hot" would have improved the experience.<br/><br/>The laksa was tasty with lots of vegetables but too much mushy wheat protein chicken. Soup was way too spicy for me but not spicy enough for my friends. <br/>After that I couldn't really taste the green curry with tempeh and massaman curry. <br/>Generous serve of rice came with the green curry.<br/>Mashed sweet potato tasted more like colored potatoes, a somewhat weird accompaniment for the curry.<br/>Pad tai was a huge disappointment with 2 medium pieces of oily fried tofu for an expensive price of $16.90. It tasted burnt from wok overheating!!<br/><br/>
Michelle
Ordered gado gado, half way through, found a hair. Gross. Got another one, half way through, ANOTHER HAIR. a serious health and safety issue. We will never come back here. If that's 2 hairy meals for one person who knows what else goes on in the kitchen. So bad.
Casualfoodie
Having been here on many more occasions since originally posting I just wanted to say that the Penang curry is delicious! A fellow dining companion also raved about the laksa. I endeavour to include more images the next time I come here.<br/><br/>Have come here several times over since my initial visit and have to say the gado gado is the bomb.com and I always get it when I visit. Have had the satay chicken several times too and can say that this is tasty, but is satay ever not tasty??!<br/><br/><br/>Initially the decision to come here was based on that it was a vegetarian restaurant. Was pleasantly surprised that it was actually 100% vegan when we arrived. The waitress greeted us swiftly and was very friendly. We received water straight away. There were several other diners but the restaurant was about 1/3 full. This place is byo only just FYI but I don't think they charge a corkage fee, my dining companion only got the tax invoice without the break up of prices. We started with and shared the chicken satay. I think that for diners who aren't enticed by mock meat, this could potentially be too much. I don't have too much of an opinion of it but would usually choose a tofu or vegetable based dish over mock meat. Having only had mock meat a couple of times before initially I was a bit apprehensive about the likeliness it took to real chicken, and thought the way it pulled apart was a tad off putting (nothing to do with the restaurant itself, just not an item I usually gravitate toward and think anyone wanting meat substitutes would really enjoy). It was tasty though with the satay sauce! It was made from wheat protein. For main I had the Panang curry which was delicious and very sweet. It came with brown rice... Recommend! My fellow diner had the san Choy bow which was 3 cos lettuce cups with vegetables and tofu in a sweet soy tasting sauce (couldn't really pick what was in this recipe) I personally didn't really like this having had a taste and it appeared to me like the vegetables were the frozen carrot, pea, corn mix from the supermarket but could be wrong. Wouldn't recommend this and she wouldn't either. The inside of the restaurant is nice and clean and overall feel was good, the girls serving were both lovely. Would recommend trying, I'd like to go again but would want to try different menu items. Altogether for 2 small plates and a main curry it came to around $37.
The Duck
The Duck Pancakes are to die for. <br/>Also the Massaman Curry.<br/>Go there.<br/>Eat the food.<br/>It's awesome.<br/>                                                       :)

I organised a birthday party here for my vegetarian friend on Saturday night and we all loved the place. Half our table ordered the lemongrass duck which was delicious (especially being faux duck). The staff were very accomodating arranging the cake and making the night special.

My friend organised my birthday here and I must say, I was impressed with the food! The dumplings were so good, that we ordered another round and I adored the Pad Thai!

Walked into Madame K's as we exploring the Brunswick Street. Was excited to find so many vegan and vegan options restaurants in this territory. Didn't expect much and out of our expectation, the food was delicious! Service was good, no wonder the restaurant was quite full during our visit that day! Their Indonesian Fried Rice was awesome while the Madame K's pancake was not what we expected, it was not really a pancake but steamed Spring Roll. Anyways, I'd still recommend Madame K's except they did not give us correct change when we settled our bills - wondered if they were out of coins?!
Bronimal
Yet another establishment I frequently patronise but have neglected to review! When you're a vegan recovering from tonsillitis, a decent tom kha is just what the doctor ordered, and Madame K's certainly delivers. Literally! <br/><br/>Too cold and fragile to venture out, having this wonderfully simple yet satisfying bowl of coconutty, lemongrassy mushroom and tofu filled goodness delivered to my door was definitely the thing to help cure what ails me. It could have used a bit more chilli, but that's an easy DIY amendment. <br/><br/>Unlike the neighbouring Gami, Madame K's use proper faux chicken (the distinct smokey flavour and pleasantly chewy texture has lead me to believe that they use my personal brand of choice.) <br/><br/>Honourable mentions also go to shiitake and chestnut steamed wontons, the nasi goreng with konjak "prawns" and the massaman made with cashews and mushroom "mutton" chunks, all of which I will be indulging in once my mangled throat is capable of tolerating solid food. <br/><br/>This is an entirely vegan menu that will not fail to satisfy even the most virulent of meat enthusiasts.
Suparups
Madame K is somewhere I always wanted to try and finally did. The service was very good. The Pan-Asian vegan food dished out is superbly tasty. When we first entered the restaurant, it was really quiet and empty(ish), but as the evening grew, the atmosphere became lively and bustling. The Betel Nut Miang Kiam (not feat. on their online menu), Skewed Chicken Satay and Nasi Goreng were just yummmy!! Sum Choy Bow was a bit of a let down. Overall, it was an wonderful dining experience :)

Went to Vegie bar yesterday and we have to wait for 50mins to get a table for 2. <br/>So we decided to this Madame K a try. <br/>It's a Thai style vegetarian cuisine. <br/>I ordered a laksa noodle and Panang curry with rice. <br/>It was good and we felt soo full! <br/><br/>

An amazing vegan restaurant with a twist . The entree was a mixture of Thai and Chinese . Tried the Japanese curry for mains and it had this beautiful 'nutty' flavour . And this is place is an absolute bang for your buck .
Vee
Between 2 people we shared the Betel Leaves and Miso Glazed Eggplants (not pictured) for entree. The betel leaves were fresh and flavourful; a perfect start to a meal. The eggplants were a bit disappointing. A bit bland and not enough sauce. For main, we had the Massamman Curry and Laksa. The curry sauce was really nice, but the fake lamb was a bit weird in texture. Something fresh or pickled could have been nice. The laksa was flavourful, with loads of veggies and fake meats. The fake prawns tasted exactly like prawns, so kudos to that. We couldnt finish them all though, got them taken away.

I went to Madame Ks for dinner tonight with my best friend and once again really enjoyed my experience. From the start you feel welcome in their cosy restaurant and they are prompt on serving you to start with an entree and/or a drink. <br/><br/>My friend loves curry but doesn't like hot spicy food and the waitress was very accommodating by telling her which meals are best suited. The meal sizing is very generous leaving me with plenty of left overs for work tomorrow! Also, very affordable! Can't fault it!! <br/><br/>I would recommend the curry puffs for entree, the gado gado salad or Nasi goreng for main and the hot chocolate to finish off. <br/><br/>Will be back over and over again <br/>

I had my birthday here with a group of people. It was delicious, I've also previously eaten here around 4-5 times. Always enjoyed it, good friendly service and full of flavour dishes. The Massaman and Panang Curries are great too and so is the Nasi Goreng. Great sized portions for the price also.

Cute and pleasant decor, friendly service and very delicious food.<br/><br/>The lamb sliders were amazing. The spicy mushroom salad (specials menu) was a little overdressed in a slightly sickly dressing but was still really nice.

My partner and I love this place for delicious tasty compassionate food, its delightful setting, and warm friendly service. Worth the trip from Adelaide for this yummy thai vegetarian food :)
The New Fave
Whether it be fried, cheesy or stuffed full with cream, there is something about eating vegetarian food which makes me feel wholesome. Madame K's Vegetarian café is no exception, serving up not only vegetarian cuisine, but healthy (but still hearty) cuisine at that!. The original plan was to head to Yong's Green Food on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy.  But unfortunately, due to a horrific fire next door, Yong's was temporarily closed.  So off we trotted across the road to try Madame K's Vegetarian café for the first time.

Food: Amazing, full of flavor<br/>Service: The staffs are friendly <br/>My favorite dish is Black sticky rice with Lychee served with Soy vanilla ice-cream
Amanda
The food here is so amazing! I've never had a bad meal here. The food is all so delicious and unique. I wish I could live in Madame K's. I especially recommend the satay and roti starter.
Tony Messenger
Another vegan joint on Brunswick St & there's plenty of them to chose from, especially if Asian is your style. This place is vegetarian but most dishes are vegan as is the complete wine list. Specials have Laos leaves stuffed with quinoa or tofu nibbles. The curries are rich and thick, the toto bread a little small. When you're out for vegan food around here the choices are plentiful, just don't forget to visit Madame K
Muzz
I really love this place! The owner is so nice, she made us feel so conformable, almost like a home environment. The decor is really nice but the greatest thing was the food! We enjoyed everything we ordered: the satay skewers, the dumplings, the "duck" with agave syrup and the red curry tofu. Also desser wasn't bad, I usually don't like Asian desserts, but the banana pacake was nice. Everything on the menu is vegan, you can eat great food and be guilt free.
Jenni Norris
This is a lovely place with very nice service. I usually have the Gadogado which is the bomb, nicest ever. My partner usually has the Japanese curry which is also very good. We've also tried many of the starters, noodles and dumplings. The desserts are also fantastic particularly the banana fritters which come with soy ice cream and a selection of fruits including strawberries and tamarillos - yum. My only criticism is that the drinks menu is very limited - no fruit juices, which is a shame.
Laura
Beautiful vegan food. The mock-duck pancakes were as good as I remember the real thing being. So tasty! The nasi goreng was good as was the pad Thai.
Zoe L
Got take away on our way out of Melbourne. Chicken Satay and Pad Thai were delicious. Girlfriend loved her duck pancakes and Nasi Goreng. Service was friendly and fast. Recommend.
Alec Scott
Food was good. Service was poor. Waited 15 minutes after sitting to get our order taken, while others coming in after were able to order way before us. One of our mains came out 5 minute before the entree, one of the mains had been finished basically as the other two came out, leaving one of our party to sit and watch the others eat. No apology at all, staff didn't seem to care.

I’ve eaten at Madame K at least four times, so obviously I like it.  I didn’t write any blog posts about the first few visits because either we scoffed the food before taking any photos or the photos were poor. I have to say I am pretty impressed with the food here. It is at the high end of the scale for mock meat.  In fact some of the mock meat is so realistic, it is a bit scary.
Maimesara
Nice meals. We went to have dinner at Madame K's on Friday. The food was very delicious and the staffs are friendly. Will go back there again and again.

Amazing Food, Amazng Service. I recently visited Madame Ks Vegetarian and was pleasantly surprised by their food and customer service. The restaurant itself was gorgeous. <br/>Brilliant food, brilliant service & brilliant atmosphere. <br/>Would highly recommend.

Loved this place . Ordered Massaman. 10 out of 10

V Good. A group of us wanted to go out to enjoy some vegetarian food and originally went to Vegie Bar, but after being left waiting for 2 hours for a table, we left and came to Madame K's Vegetarian and we are glad that we did. The food was phenomenal and the service was just as impressive. 12/10 would recommend !!!

Love the food!

Great Place!. This is one of the best upscale Asian restaurants. Not only is the food excellent, the decor is nice and the staff is friendly.
A Melbournite
I ordered the wonton dumplings (not pictured- devoured too quickly) and one of the best gado-gado I’ve ever had. The veggies were fresh and lightly steamed. The peanut sauce was diiivine and eagerly shared amongst my housemates who used the leftovers as roti dip/curry sauce (it’s a very generous serving). How did we get such a feast delivered to our house?
Mon's Adventure
Sometimes spontaneity provides you with more memorable experiences, especially when out to dine. After an unfulfilling meal at Henry and the Fox (a post on this will be coming in the future), we ventured to Brunswick St for a second round. Our initial plan was to drop by the popular vegan and organic restaurant Yong Green Food, but this plan was thwarted after their voicemail said they were closed for a break.
Annie
Best restaurant to eat out in Fitzroy! I've been coming here for months and the service and food is always great. I highly recommend the Panang curry
Michael Fields
The service was great. The serving size was small, each dish had very spicy seasoning and I do eat fairly hot food. Even our friends from Indonesia found the food spicy. Tone it down guys! The place was very noisy. Reasonable price. Quick service in spite of a full house. Will not go back.
Christine Newbury
Not to be overlooked!. I've always walked past Madame K's, either on the way to the Vege Bar or Yong Green Food, but on Monday night I finally dined here with some friends. The menu is so extensive and varied, and it was really hard to choose, but we ended up picking the Nasi Goreng, Green Curry with Tempeh, and the Pad Thai. The Green Curry was on the average side but the Nasi Goreng and Pad Thai was some of the tastiest vegan dishes I've had in a long time. The use of mock prawns and chicken in the Nasi Goreng was especially divine. The restaurant really filled up while we were there and it was good to see it busy, however we weren't rushed and were able to enjoy a long catch up. I'll definitely be back!
Tom Prentice
Amazing quality - especially for the price!. When you go to a restaurant you expect to have to pay a little extra for getting the best, but not here! Meals (especially the Panang!) were delicious! Rice came with the meal (say goodbye to $4 extra for rice) and was absolutely delicious. Meat alternatives are delicious. and ultimately very satisfactory and reasonably priced.<br/><br/>Highly recommended!
Grant
Excellent food. The laksa was my favourite. The lamb sliders were great as well. I'll definitely be back!
Liz J
My "go-to" for Vegan Asian Cuisine. Great variety, friendly service.<br/>Food can be a little on the salty side, depending on personal preferences.<br/>Small servings, but filling!
Oanyaogu
Utterly terrible service and meal. The young waitresses were utterly unhelpful when questioned about the menu. The wait times between starters and mains were excessive and we were the only 2 people in the restaurant! One of the plastic plates was dirty and had to be returned to the kitchen without any word of apology by staff. The dipping sauce for spring rolls was plain supermarket sweet chilli sauce and the spring roll pastry was very hard. As for the tom yum soup - it was sugary sweet and was promptly sent back to the kitchen. The vegetarian dumplings were also tasteless. After over 1 hour and still hungry (and poorer!) we left completely dissatisfied. The young waitresses just looked at us blankly and remained at the rear of the restaurant. Probably the worst culinary experience I've ever had in a restaurant!
Nerissa
Absolutely fantastic. Highly recommended for vegans/vegetarians as the whole menu is now vegan. Great service too.
Dean Maher
Glad Vegie Bar was full!. I went here for dinner a while back after Vegie Bar across the road was full and I'm glad it was! There was ten of us at the time and they fitted us in no problem. I was the only vegetarian of the group so wasn't expecting everyone to be blown away by it but they was. I have no idea how they make the taste and texture of the faux meats so good. I suspect witchcraft. Looking forward to going back.
Zbradfieldleehong
Best vegetarian food I've had. One of the best! Love every moment of it. This was my last meal with friends before I leave to Brisbane. Enjoyed everything
Bon_eh
Great every time.... I have been to Madam K's abuot four times now, once to eat in and the other three times for take away. I have not had any issues with the service which has always been efficient and friendly. The food everytime has been great - the satay skewer starter is amazing and I can't get enough - I need that recipe! The massam curry was nice and flavoursome and the tofu and cashews dish was ok though maybe a little bit lacking in flavour, but still nice and healthy. The restaurant itself has a nice cosy decor that is inviting. I say ignor the naysayers and come and experience the food for yourself.
Sol_n_chai
I came here last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the dumplings and Thai spicy salad. Great service. Will be returning soon!

APPALLING, TERRIBLE BEHAVIOUR, AND MEAN SPIRITED LIARS. This restaurant may have good food, but their behaviour is completely unacceptable and I hope that people vote with their feet and ensure that the place is shut down and the owners go out of business.
Pink.rhapsody
Tasty. Context: We attended a large birthday dinner and most of the group would have preferred meat dishes. <br/><br/>Finding: Everyone was incredibly impressed with the standard of food. The curries were delicious. I like the little jars they serve the ginger beer in. <br/><br/>The Cons: Only wine is BYO and the beer list is abysmal. No craft beer, nor are you allowed to bring your own. They could stand to benefit from the beer culture usually so prevalent in the area.

Ok to good fare. After some abortive attempts to eat in North Fitzroy (who doesn't open on a Wednesday??) we came across a section of St Georges Street with a fair amount of choice. Having one vegetarian in our party of two, we figured Madame K's would be a safe bet. Inside was warm with pleasant decor (woven fish traps as lamp shades, black lacquered furniture). Once the menu was perused, we gave up waiting and flagged down a member of the waitstaff to place our orders. The wonton soup I am told was excellent, though having a french onion base seemed at odds with such a dish. Liking it spicy, I went for Tom Young which had a tomato / tamarind? base, again at odds with the dish. On the plus side, it had faux-prawns that were excellent in tast, number and consistency. Mains were a perfectly adequate tofu and cashew stir fry, and a revelation in the form of a "mushroom lamb" madras curry. To be honest I chose this half out of curiosity, but whatever it was made from (NOT mushrooms) it tasted very good and more to the point it had a texture almost exactly like slow cooked beef / lamb. There were "meat fibres" in it and it could have fooled most omnivores out there. Both came with brown rice (nice to get a choice). Overall a perfectly nice meal but nothing to write home about (once the novelty of the faux-lamb wears off).
Bassam Chakelli
Another favorite of mine....food is awesome, and reasonable in price...presentation, good, service good. .proberly more than 70 percent is or can be made vegan...
ClaireJ
Delish!!. Wow, not sure about the other reviews but we loved it!<br/>Went for dinner on Friday night, it was quiet when we got there but packed within half an hour. The food was delicious. We had curry samosas and Madame K Special Pancake for entree. The pancake even impressed my 'carnivore' husband!! Nasi Goreng and Massaman curry for mains and Banana roti for dessert. Loved it all, flavours spectacular. <br/>We could not fault the service, prompt and friendly. Will definitely visit here again.
Karen
Great food - when it arrived!. Food here was really good but it was a busy night so our group received their meals at different times. Also mains came out while people were still eating entrees whilst others received no food at all for ages - it was a bit of a shambles. However once the food arrived it really was delicious. Wine was very reasonably priced. I think we just hit a bad night service-wise so I would definitely go back.
Moov
Yuk. Not good. I draw the line at soft drinks served in jam jars. The couple beside me neede to rent a room. Not nice
Health Freak
Absolutely awful serve. My boyfriend's meal came out and mine did not arrive for over an hour. We asked where my meal was and was told it was coming; before waiting for another half hour and still having no meal arrive. Left the restaurant without me being able to even have dinner because of the service. Nice food but would not recommend until they upgrade their staff/service. Very disappointed.

Delicious vegan food. Extremely fast service. Very friendly staff. Will definitely be returning!

Excellent Vegan food!. We ordered:<br/>Entree:<br/>Dumplings, lady finger rolls<br/>The entree's were very average (same as other restaurants)<br/><br/>Mains:<br/>Pad Thai, Oyster 'mushroom' lamb, Prawn Salad<br/>Mains were incredible! The mock meats in the oyster 'mushroom' lamb and the prawn salad were delicious!!!!<br/>Pad Thai was the best I've had!<br/><br/>Dessert:<br/>Banana tempura, banana roti<br/>Banana roti was delicious, and the banana tempura was very average..didn't really compare to the deliciousness of the banana roti with fruit.<br/><br/>Overall, the atmosphere was great, very friendly and helpful staff, great good! Would definitely go back, and recommend to friends!

I go here all the time and I have never been disappointed. :)

Fantastic service, excellent tasting food. Highly recommend this place . I got the massoman curry so yummy and for dessert I got the sticky brown rice with ice cream so delicious

Service is good, food is not good, the fake meat is weird , we definitely will not come back again

Good presentation but food failed to impress. The original plan was to go to the Veggie Kitchen up the road but unfortunately the restaurant is closed on Mondays! So we came to Madame K. I was quite impressed with the interior decor the minute we walked in. The menu looks quite interesting although a tad pricey. We ordered the massaman curry and stir fry mushrooms egg plant with Thai Basil. My friend specifically request no onions on her dish yet we found plenty of red onion hidden in the mushrooms. It was quite disappointing but the waitress apologized and the offered to replace the dish sans onion which my friend accepted. Although the food presentation looks quite impressive but the taste left a lot to be desired. I find the eggplants and brown rice were a bit undercooked. My least favourite vegetarian restaurant by far.

Reserved a table comfortably on a Saturday night, arrived and was greeted promptly on arrival and shown to our table, cute little cosy restaurant with gorgeous decor. Ordered entrees and mains, and our meals served fast, with entrees coming out first and presented neatly and aesthetically and our main right after we finished the entrees, and the food was delicious and service was friendly and to top it off good was inexpensive! Best restaurant experience I've had in a while, definitely going back.
Garretteats
Wow! Went here the other night and was very impressed. I got the laksa which did not disappoint! Full of flavor, not sure about the mock meat though (wasn't that noticeable). I also got to taste a bit of the pad see eww and the Japanese curry. Both very nice and quite authentic tasting. Service is average, a bit of a wait on the food though so don't come in ravenous!
Sugar_licks
Terrible - understaffed so expect no service, you will have to ask for water, ask when the other entrees are, you will get your food at different times even though you have ordered the same thing, food varied between being so spicy it was close to not edible and bland- would not go back which was disappointing as I had been looking forward to trying this place for a while
Makanmakanan
Not the best service but I do like the fried rice and satay. my housemate is vegetarian and another good friend is gluten intolerant (I'm nowhere close to being either) so it's a great place for all of us to have dinner.
Melia Khallouf
Very tasty. Very happy. Between two people, we ordered the duck salad, the lentil patty salad, lady fingers (deep fried spring rolls), samosas and banana desert x1 - Total of $75 - worth it. Everything was prepared well, full of flavour, served on time and the mock meat was really good! We'll certainly come back again.

I are here for dinner last night for the first time and I enjoyed it. I was absolutely starving and went to yong greens first but they were packed so we decided to try Madame k's. we were instantly taken to a table and we received our dishes within 20 mins. I had nasi goreng which was delicious very filling thankfully and quite spicy which was a nice surprise (I usually prefer mild). My friend who is coeliac had the Penang curry which she said she loved and was easily catered for. Although small, the restaurant was beautifully decorated and I felt comfortable there. It was busy but not crazy busy like veggie bar where you can barely hear the conversation you are having! Overall I was satisfied and had no complaints. Will return again
Nitya
Vegetarian prawn FTW. This restaurant helped to sway my opinion of vegetarian 'meat'. Prior to getting regular take-aways from Madame K I was unconvinced by vegetarian 'prawns' or 'meat'. I'm now converted!! <br/><br/>I particularly like the laksa (once it was too sweet, but every other time it has been delicious). The vegetarian clear soup is a perfect option if I'm feeling under the weather. Stir fry tofu and cashews with brown rice is very filing in a good way.<br/><br/>Another benefit of Madam K's is it can be satisfying for meat eaters - I have had a meal here with 6 friends who were not vegetarians, and everyone found something on the menu that they were happy to try.<br/><br/>The generous portin sizes is appreciated.
Foodgloriousfood
Great, fresh food. We live locally and have been disappointed with almost all the takeaway Thai we have had over recent years. Had our first meal from Madame K's last night and the 2 dishes we ordered were great - Pad Thai was really fresh and tasty, with large pieces of fried tofu, and the red curry was delicious. Many of the poor reviews seem to be related to poor service, which obviously I can't comment on having takeaway. All I can say is, they said it would be ready in 20 mins and when I arrived after 20-25 it was ready and waiting. Will def be trying other items for takeaway next week.
Jac.H
They need more staff, and the staff need more training. My meal was wrong and the food came out at all different random times. Wanted to love it, but no such luck.
Sweet-Toof
Sadly disappointed. 5 of us went and received our meals at different times, my dish was the first out but was barely warm and bland tasting. I think with more kitchen and floor staff on things could be better organised
Apples And Pears
This place has do much going for it... Nicely decorated and the food is presented well but on the night I went, the service was lacking. While the staff were lovely, they were a bit slow and didnt seem to know what they were doing? The food was yummy but I think a little too expensive...
Shazmoo
ALL the options. Always on the hunt for delicious vegetarian options and Melbourne is one of the easiest places in the world to be vego - Madame K's confirms this!<br/><br/>Nice little eatery on Brunswick Street, the food - while not spectacular is yummy and caters for many with lots of options on the menu!<br/><br/>Need to go again so I can try another dish out!
Zoe Dyson
Nice. We we one of two tables having a late lunch. I had the Thai spicy salad. My friend had the gado gado. We shared the duck crepes as an entree. We both really liked the food, service was friendly and relaxed.
Chump
The worst vegetarian meal. I ordered a Butter Curry with chickpeas. It in no way resembled anything like a traditional (Butter chicken) sauce as it was completely runny and insipid. The chickpeas were crunchy and the other vegetables added no interest or flavour. The roti was completely inedible as it was soaked in oil and soggy and undercooked. I have been a vegetarian most of my life and this was the worst meal vegetarian or otherwise I can remember. I wish I had checked the other reviews before I chose this restaurant.
Sean Whelan
Brilliant. Great menu. Friendly service.
Vego C-bear
Absolutely amazing food, the lamb masaman curry is to die for. Certain items are overpriced such as the roti. This place is fantastic however they really need to improve their service, the first time we went there we waited half an hour for a menu, the second time they forgot all of our roti bread and the waitress came to our table with two plates - both which we had ordered. She announced the name of one of them and the person on our table who ordered it put their hand up then she called out my dish and I put my hand up and then turned around to see where she had gone and she had walked off and delivered it to another table! We asked for two different types of drinks both they had run out of but we were not told this until about 10 minutes after everyone else's drinks were served and we were still charged for them on the bill! Tonight we ordered online, arrived to pick up our meal 30 minutes later and they had not received our order even though we had email proof that we ordered it. We love you Madam K's but step it up or we won't be coming around for much longer!

Never EVER go here. Absolutly outraged at the service of this place, it was my friends birthday and she booked 3 weeks prior to the dinner, the restaurant called her on the day confirming her booking then called back 15 minutes before we were due to get there to say they have no space could we come later which of course we couldn't as we had 10 people coming to meet us. When we got there they had no table for us, didn't know anything about our booking, were completely unhelpful, had us stand around while a waiter came up and said "sorry i don't know why theres not a table for you, theres just not" then another woman came up and told us they gave our table to some other people...but didn't finish her sentence with a conclusion of how they were going to provide space for 10 people that booked 3 weeks in advance. Needless to say we walked out and went next door to viet rose which i HIGHLY recommend however i will never ever even go near this place again and will tell everyone i know not to. Shocking service and from what I've heard food isn't that great either.
Veggievore
Lots of dishes to keep you interested and going back. Nice flavours and always fresh. Service and presentation needs polish, nothing bad and certainly not from lack of trying......it just made us laugh especially the tower of rice on the side of the plate. Staff very pleasant and nice relaxed feel. We will keep going back. Good take away option too.
Brando The Pig
Fine display of what to look forward to if we all become vegetarians. Who would have thought green curry could taste THAT good with tofu. Was the standout dish of the night. "Lamb" mushroom massaman was a close second, they looked like meat balls and played off the meatiness of mushrooms. Service was pretty average but overall a good experience and worth a visit for the no meat shock factor of the green curry which is absolutely delicious
Vego Louise
Good Green Curry, No Good Nasi. I was really looking forward to trying this place out, looked up the menu online, was hanging to get the Gado Gado but changed my mind at the last second and got the Nasi Goreng, big mistake! The Nasi Goreng was quite literally a large plate of brown rice, with a few 'prawns' and and a few vegetables. When a vegetarian place fails at delivering tasty and plentiful servings of vegetables it sucks. I was looking forward to the soy chicken satay it comes with, but that was also quite disappointing, the flavour was okay but the serving was tiny, a small bite of chicken on a stick, unless you want 3 cups of brown rice with a few vegetables do not order, the overall flavour of the Nasi Goreng was also lack lustre.<br/><br/>That said, the roti and peanut sauce that i ordered was really good, the roti was tasty and crispy (however quite small) and it came with a nice natural peanut sauce that was very chunky.<br/><br/>My friend ordered the green curry which in itself had great flavour and the organic tempeh has a beautiful texture and taste but again the curry itself is quite small and comes with a huge serving of rice, i just wish they changed the menu so that rice was ordered as an extra or side, not making up the basis of the dish, it just seems lazy and cost cutting. Adding rice to a small dish does not make it suddenly worth $17, not everyone wants rice with their thai!,
Jenniper
Love it. I've always had a great meal at Madame K's, although I agree some nights they can be a little off their usual high mark. We started going there when it became impossible to get a seat at Vegie Bar at dinner time. Have also had really quick and fresh take-away and deliveries. Can't tell you my fave dish as I'm still working my through the entire menu, but the tom kha and massaman are definite stand outs.
Veggielover
Waited for 1.5hr with only tea. Waitors and waitress kept saying the chef was cooking our food but we didn't get anything we ordered except two pots of tea. Very DISAPPOINTED by their SERVICE and the municated with customers. Was highly looking forward to eating some nice toasty food but ended up starving and walked out!
Urban Gooner
Fresh, tasty food and a great atmosphere inside. The curries won't disappoint.
Speccy
Better than vegie bar. Forget about the big line into Vegie bar. Go across the road to this place. Highly recommend the thai mushroom and eggplant salad. Warm, flavorsome, and full of all kinds of mushies & heaps of other vegies.
Man Fuuud
Man fuud vegie day out. So I consider myself the average carnivore roaming the earth.. but was convince to have vegetarian for lunch to which i agreed.<br/>I had the mushroom lover ..very tasty (MSG inspired) nevertheless tasty... it was all fine and dandy till i received the bill $17 bucks WTF...for mushroom and rice?!!! dude seriously i could feed a horse with 17 bucks with more variety than mushroom and rice....seriously these vegies..think i might open a vegie store..with vegies roaming and the huge profit margins in serving just vegies its a fully just cause...
Jess Kenobi
I have been there twice always yummy food and lovely people and good price I recommend the "chicken" ceasar salad!

Must have been an off night. The Good:<br/>- It's vegetarian<br/>- We were refunded for the crap food<br/>The Bad:<br/>- Took 20 minutes for entrees (spring rolls and asparagus)<br/>- Took 1 hour for mains<br/>- Entree plates and empty bottles weren't collected until the end of the night<br/>- The red wine we ordered tasted like it had been uncorked and left open for a week<br/>- The Indian Butter Curry tasted like Heinz baked beans with chick peas mixed in<br/>- The Nasi Goreng was burnt and the rice was extremely sticky, and the egg for it came 10 minutes later<br/>- It took 3 Mouthfuls of the 'Mushroom Lovers' dish for my partner to lose her appetite<br/>- Young waitress literally doesn't speak English <br/><br/>I don't understand how there are so many good reviews about this place we must have come on a really really really bad night.
Veganwarddy
Consistently impressed. I have been going to Madam K since they first opened and I am never disappointed. After recently returning from Thailand, Madam K delivers some of the best Thai food I have ever tasted.<br/><br/>The service is always quick (meals are usually out in 10 minutes), and they have been very helpful in accommodating me at the last minute before they close.<br/><br/>I strongly recommend trying the Pad Thai, Massaman and Green curry. You will not be disappointed!

I've been there tday with my girfriend- awesome food and very friendly waiter and waitress . We'll go 2nd there 2nd time!

Best Thai Vegetarian Ever. We weren't expecting too much from Madame K's but it passed the test with flying colours. The tastiest entree's with side salads and the best vegetarian Massaman Curry I've ever had. Salad main was incredible. Cheap too. See for yourself.
Dinnerate
What a disaster!! 1hr 30min wait on food!!. What can I say, we ordered at 7.35pm for entrees and mains. <br/><br/>At 8.50pm, we asked the waiter what on earth was happening....no food had arrived - not even the entrees.......the waiter avoided coming back to us.<br/><br/>At 9pm we walked out.<br/><br/>All of this could have been resolved by a simple communication from the wait staff that there was a wait on food. Why this did not happen, we have no idea!<br/><br/>Finally, to top it all off! We got chased out of the restaurant and verbally abused by the female manager/owner!!<br/><br/>Need I say, we won't be going back.
Nicole Power
Very impressive. Dined at Madame K's on a Friday night with my Partner and we were very impressed by the whole experience. We ordered the 'duck' pancakes and roti bread for entree which were both delicious and then we ordered the Pad Thai (best I have ever had!) and the Green curry for mains which were also both delicious. My only criticism is that the portions are on the small side for the price - I wanted more pad thai! I also had the poached pear for dessert which was presented beautifully (all the dishes were actually). After 3 courses I wasn't really really full, but satisfied and the food was so yummy. Service was good. We will be back!
Milieu
Had an excellent dinner. What a pleasure to have a menu where you want to order everything! <br/><br/>We had miso soup - fresh and aromatic. Mock chicken sate - nutty and delicious. Don't know how you get texture like that in mock meat<br/><br/>For mains we had green curry - loved the nutty tempeh and fresh greens. And nasi goreng with mock prawns and mick chicken. This was spicy and delicious. As a vegetarian it's over 30 years since I ate a prawn so I don't know if that's what they really taste like. Texture and shape was extraordinary! <br/><br/>Ambience is great. Soft jazz. Modern design with mock rabbit and birds in a cage!<br/><br/>Highly recommended!

A Vegan delight!. My partner and I dined here a few weekends ago, we were delighted by the many many vegan options on offer! So much that it took us an age to decide!<br/>In the end we over ordered of course! too many great things!<br/>We went with the wontons, miso eggplant, tom kha soup, soba salad, and prik king curry all of which were amazing! all of the food came out perfectly spaced out, enough time for us to be ready for the next.<br/>We will definitley be returning! The service was perfect, not overly attentative and the atmosphere was calm and well lit, tables set up and spaced apart well. Very enjoyable experience! Too bad we had no room for dessert!
ThrowingMuse
Not Bad Desserts.... Went to Madame Ks for desserts one night as Veggie Bar had run out of viable vegan options and it happened to be across the road. I had the poached pear that was beautifully presented, almost matched by its tasted. The others had a variety of desserts, all immaculately presented and evidently tasty. We checked their menu, and the entrees/mains looked varied and interesting so we vowed to come back here soon.<br/>Return we did. And, as I secretly predicted, the rest of the menu is just not quite up to the quality of the dessert. Like the desserts the dishes ARE amazingly presented, I think the chef is more an artisian than anything else. I had the tempeh green curry which was well flavoured and had plenty of tempeh in it which appeared to me a better deal to what everyone else was getting – the fried rice and noodle dishes didn’t look particularly distinctive and without much veggies, the mushroom dish overly peppery and saucy, and my friend who ordered the Butter Curry said that consistency was different to what a Indian curry should be, which is representative of my main criticism of the food here. Although it is all fine and okay, the menu takes a scattershot approach covering all distances from India to Japan and in the process loses any distinctiveness or niche. Interestingly enough, its 2 main rivals, Veggie Bar and Yong Green, also take a scatter shot approach to their menus but result in food that is generally tastier, cheaper (Yong Green) or larger portions (Veggie Bar).<br/>The main issue is however with the service. Plenty of reviewers state that the waiters ‘stare’ when questioned. I sympathise: my main impression of the staff is they wander around wide eyed and unfocused like deer caught in the headlights. On the night it was difficult to get their attention to serve the table, they made a LOT of mistake (serving coffee instead of chai, getting confused which dish went where, one person on the table got their mains a long time after everyone else). When trying to diplomatically address these concerns with the staff, they would just looked stunned and vacant and then continue to make even bigger mistakes. I’m not quite sure where the language barriers end and the lack of basic organization and hospitality training begins.<br/> <br/>All in all its okay and the food pleasant to look at, but only the desserts really stand out.

Great food and service. My Nasi Goreg was delish! My only criticism is the size of entree is a bit small.

Delicious. The menu has a lot of choice and includes dishes with mock meat as well as without, the dishes came out very quickly and were served beautifully, everything was super tasty and well portioned. Lamb curry was sensational, it was just like eating really tender actual lamb. I'm surprised there were so few people there, it's a really great little place.
Secret Diner 2014
Well short of the mark......... Menu reads well and makes you hopeful, unfortunately that is where it ends. Entrée of chicken skewers- luke warm and smothered with a very average, Bidvest/PFD satay sauce, the house dish-Pancake served up a little more hope, was let down by the Tom Yum soup which tasted bland, other than the hint of lime and tomato sauce-It was sent away after 4 spoonfuls. Mains-Gado Gado - (extra$1 for egg but comes with half an avocado-I think who ever does the costing and menu planning needs to go back to school-I doubt it is the chef either), Red Curry duck- 4 wafer thin slices of mock duck, with an average sauce, tinned baby corn, tinned lychees, tinned bamboo shoots, not a hint of anything fresh and accompanied by soggy, unseasoned brown rice. <br/><br/>Average service, nice place. Meh factor, huge.<br/><br/>Would not bother again, would not recommend. I can tell you where all the food comes from-try any Asian grocer for something better.

Hmmm... Unsure.. I'm glad to see another vegetarian restaurant in Fitzroy, especially one brave enough to offer popular South-East Asian favourites with mock meat, but I have some reservations about the flavours.<br/><br/>I have been meaning to eat there for a little while, and thought I would pick up some takeaway to at least sample something from their menu. The decor was nice enough and it was filled with quite happy looking diners, and there was a nice atmosphere that night. The staff member who greeted me was helpful (although the only reason I could identify he was a staff member was the notepad in his hand) and I received my takeaway order quite quickly.<br/><br/>I ordered the curry laksa, which came with a small amount of rice noodles, some vegetables and bean shoots, large cubes of fried tofu and some mock meat (mock prawns and slices of mock chicken). The curry sauce was bright yellow and tasted more of tumeric with coconut milk rather than actual "curry", and I'm sure would appeal to white Australian tastes rather than Asian ones. To be honest I personally was quite unimpressed with the dish, and if I felt like a curry laksa in future would definitely go elsewhere.<br/><br/>However, curry laksa is probably not their forte and I am planning to go back and sample some of their other dishes. I think opening a vegetarian restaurant is a bold venture and I am happy to support them in the hope that with time they evolve and improve.<br/><br/>In conclusion, I would be happy to take an Australian vegetarian friend there for dinner, but I would hesitate recommending this place to Asian diners without sampling their menu further.

Loved it ... Tom Kha was one of the best ever; didn't miss the chicken at all. And the tofu with cashew nut was awesome.

Very vegan friendly. Delicious, very affordable dining and most food items are vegan friendly with a fair share of gluten free options. Would definitely revisit.

Great Vegetarian Dining Alternative in Brusnwick St. I dined last night with a friend at Madame K's and we both thought it a charming restaurant and a great new addition to the Brunswick Street scene. The decor is delightful, the service is friendly and professional and, most importantly, the food is wonderful. The restaurant filled up very quickly soon after we arrived and, as a consequence, our meals were a little slow in coming but the staff were very apologetic about the delay and were very attentive in making sure our tea and water glasses were kept refilled. All the dishes we tried were most enjoyable with the Massaman Curry and Eggplant and Mushroom Salad as real standouts. It's nice to have an elegant vegetarian dining option in Fitzroy where there is real attention not just to the taste but also the presentation and styling of food. Highly recommended.

Decent and worthwhile. I thought there was plenty of food (the person who said they were hungry clearly eats big!!). Huge portions and really tasty. Service was attentive also. Only comment is that I expected the 'extra egg' with the nasi goreng to be a fried egg on top of the rice (not egg which is 'in' the rice, chinese style). Will go back.

Ripped off and throw away. Big shoes to fill when opening a veggie joint near the likes of vegie bar and yong green who for me have never failed to deliver a delicious and tasty meal. The feeling I got here was just a smart ideas person who thought to try and cash in on this. Did the person opening this place care to trial these dishes on friends and keen vegetarians before opening? An upside down set of rice with a lonely slice of $1 cut tofu and veggies you can count on one hand is just not going to cut it. We had three staff serve the table and after ordering a chai tea (boring) which took 15 minutes and was put on the table 2 minutes before entree arrived, I was starting to get the idea of how the rest of service would turn out. Staff stare blankly, lose their nerve and walk away when they check if the bills been paid , def won't be wasting my time again.

Spectacular! Went for the first time today when we planned on going to vegie bar & spotted it across the road. <br/><br/>I ordered the green curry puffs. Delicious fresh and very moreish. My partner ordered the massaman starter. This had mock beef an he said the word amazing 3 times when I asked him about it. <br/><br/>Main for me was green curry. I swear I squealed with delight! Honestly I would drink the sauce in a cup I could. I've ate a lot of green currys and this was by far the best I have ever had. Tempeh was nice but best was the perfectly cooked veggies in it. <br/><br/>Partner had the veggie oyster sauce. He again said just the word amazing. I dislike mock meats so couldn't try his but as an ex meat eater he says it was incredibly like the real deal. <br/><br/>I am craving it now and may need to go 2 days in a row.

Dissapointed!very small portions for the price you pay.Taste of food is nothing special, but presentation is fancy.Im just dtick to vegi bar and waiting in the cue.it's worth it!

Lovely dinner. After a holiday in Asia over the holiday break I have not been able to get away from Asian cuisine! After finding Madame K's after a walk on the Brunswick street I was welcomed by beautiful blue wallpaper and decor. I was greeted by the friendly staff (i do not know what the other reviewers have been saying about the "awkwardness"? ) but they were wonderful. Food came quickly and although was a bit cold nothing unbearable (maybe from the melbourne weather?) I was very excited to dig in! I ordered the massaman curry and my partner ordered the laska! We both enjoyed it thoroughly, the taste were fantastic! For dessert I had the poached pear which was also very nice (although not very asian haha)! Will definitely be showing many people this restaurant and coming back very soon!

Luke warm laksa and blah. Having spent too long stuck in the cute puppy, pet rat trick and 'unlikely animal friends' section of youtube, my partner and I left it too late to get over to Laksa King and back in time to get to our 9pm movie. Instead we ended up at Madame K's, and figured we'd give it another chance. <br/><br/>We went once before, having walked that block of Brunswick St for 20 minutes times trying to find Yume, questioning our sanity and sense of direction, and reluctantly conceding that it's probably been replaced by something. Madame K's is now where Yume used to be. Incidentally, until reading urban spoon reviews, I had no idea how terrible Yume supposedly was - I was always a huge fan. Madame K's was never going to impress us that day, given that we were all prepared for Yume's sickly sweet nasu dengaku and walking through the dachshund print curtain to get to the toilet. Ah, memories. I can't remember what we ordered on our first trip to Madame K's, except that I thought it was average in the way that food I cook at home is pleasant and nice.. but totally average. My partner liked it, but is much less fussy and much more easily pleased. <br/><br/>Last night, we both ordered Laksas. Mine was luke warm at best, and his was a couple of degrees hotter - devastating. Laksa should be thick and hot in all senses, and have flavour from something other than the floating, last minute additions. I've never sent anything back to a kitchen ever, but I was sorely tempted last night. This laksa tasted like a just-add-water sachet and was about as thick, tasty and spicy as one (read: tasted like dish water), and the noodles were chewy and .. rice. I'm no expert, but thought that laksa was meant to come with egg noodles - though I've had a combination of egg noodles and vermicelli before. If they were cooked I wouldn't have minded, but they needed at least a couple more minutes' cooking time, as well as the rest of the dish. <br/><br/>I'm not a fan of mock meat; it always has a strange soft plasticky texture and tastes like something that's both bad for you, and not what it's meant to, anyway. The mock meat in the Madame K's laksa wasn't bad, but added nothing beyond the gimmick that it usually does. I ate it because the noodles were almost inedible, the soup was cold and the tofu wasn't enough to constitute a meal. <br/><br/>Other somewhat irrelevant things to note: the place has nice wallpaper, but is bitterly cold (I remember this from last time too). The staff sat us down and took our order quickly, but added nothing to the experience. <br/>Sometimes you don't notice what muzak a restaurant plays unless it's inappropriate, you're on a bad date, or the staff are teenagers who need to express themselves to their customers to get them through the shift (I used to blast doom metal at 6am in the bagel shop, and die every time someone else put Pink on, for example). In this case, the radio playing in the kitchen was distracting and the lack of atmosphere and hubbub in the rest of the restaurant made it all the more noticeable. <br/><br/>I don't know how long Madame K's will survive - I don't understand how people expect to operate a business with a hodgepodge menu of random Asian-style dishes, and (presumably) expect to rely on a stream of vegetarian customers to keep them afloat. It’s all so-so, and so-so isn’t really good enough - it doesn't cut it as a generic "Asian" restaurant, and it doesn't cut it for a vegetarian one, either. There's fierce competition in this area for good vegetarian fare, and for the middle of the road vegetarian places that you can take your strictly carnivorous in-laws to without having to ensure crap about rabbit food and mung beans (I’m thinking Vegie Bar, here). Madame K's could be mediocre if it served food at the right temperature. Last night's experience was markedly tepid all over. Not going back.

Do you like AWFUL food and being ripped off? EAT HERE!. My girlfriend and I dined at Madame K's tonight and after initially being excited about a new vege joint on the Fitzroy block we left exceptionally disappointed - with both the food and the service. We ordered the vegetarian Indian Butter Curry - it was absolutely abysmal. The best thing about this curry was the plain brown rice that came with it. While it was certainly vegetarian it in no way resembled an Indian curry let alone a butter curry. The consistency was revoltingly thin and it contained peas and corn that were cooked to within an inch of their lives along with overly crunchy chickpeas. It was served warm at best. This main meal cost $17 more than it was worth i.e $0. <br/><br/>Everything else we ordered was served either warm or less than warm. We felt everything was overpriced given the quality of the ingredients.<br/><br/>The service was weird - awkward and inattentive despite the small number of customers. <br/><br/>I would never dine here again nor would I EVER recommend it to anyone EVER.<br/><br/>If you like nice food DO NOT EAT HERE.

Delicious!. As a non-vegetarian I really wanted to experiment and see what all the fuss was about with mock meat. Personally I thought it was very weird to eat substitute meat but after coming to Madame K's it has totally changed. The beautifully designed cafe is very casual dinning I was welcomed by the waiters straight away and ordered the madame k's pancake for the entree while my friend had the skewed chicken satays both were very delicious. Although I knew it was mock meat you barely noticed. I ordered the vegetarian chicken rice for main which had bits of mock chicken in it and it was absolutely beautiful didn't feel like mock meat at all! We ended the night with poach pear which was also very delicious as it was not too sweet. As a non-vegetarian I really recommend others to try it asap! it has become on of my new favourites and will definitely be visiting a lot more often!

Great night out. Me and a few friends were initially wanting to try out Vegie Bar but they do not take bookings and it was a 1 and a half hour wait before we had a chance to get a table... so, we ended up walking around brunswick street and stumbled along this humble little restaurant. At first look, it didn't look all too classy. The decorations were simple. However, the service that we were given was AWESOME :)<br/><br/>The owner of the store came out and sat down with us an had a chat to us and recommended some items on the menu seeing as how most of my friends were vegetarian virgins. The food was lovely (not sure why some people say that it was cold??). For the entree, we had a wrap (with mock duck). Tastes EXACTLY like peking duck!! And for the main, I had the pad thai (also very good... sour and sweet. what you would expect from a normal thai pad thai). For dessert, I had the black sticky rice with green tea ice-cream (the ice-cream was good but I guess the rice was a little plain for my liking).<br/><br/>All in all, a great restaurant. Great service and great food. I will definitely be coming back even if its just to have a chat with the lady owner :) She was so helpful and sweet. Do go!

Great menu. I'm quite surprised at the negativity of a lot of the reviews on here. I've been visiting the other vegetarian options on Brunswick St fairly regularly for a few years now, and I was really happy to see something new spring up. We had the massaman lamb and the chinese fried rice. The massaman lamb in particular was great; it's more savoury than many vege options and we found it really satisfying. The service was also fast and friendly, and while people are complaining about the price, it really wouldn't seem expensive if Vegie Bar weren't just across the road. Not every business can turn a profit with prices like Vegie Bar, and for what we got the prices here seemed reasonable.

I want to go back right now.. Yes the portions aren't huge but I think they're enough and I prefer quality over quantity. We had the mock lamb with sweet potatoe mash and it was delicious, really savoury and a little different to any veggie dish I'd had before - and I've been vegetarian for two years now. I'm craving it as I write about it. We also had the fried rice with soy duck and lychees... The lychees were amazing with the fried rice and the "duck" was really yummy. I like this place and will go again at some point. No it's not veggie bar with its giant portions but I'm grateful for an alternative.

Absolutely Terrible. I can't emphasise enough how terrible this restaurant is. Most of the food came out luke warm or cold. The portions were way too small, and to add insult to injury you pay a lot more there than other similar restaurants like Enlightened Cuisine. And when you complain there you are greeted with blank stares, like it's your fault that the food is bad.<br/><br/>Just don't go there. Go over to Vege bar where the food is great no matter how busy there are, and you'll get a lot more on your plate without paying as much. And the staff are more alert and responsive.<br/><br/>It's disappointing that you know that people who aren't vegan or vegetarian will go to Madame K's and might form an opinion that that's what all veg food is like, when it's not. I think the best thing for all concerned is that this place closes down - it's that bad.

Cynical, unresearched. I was pleased that a new meatless establishment had surfaced on Brunswick St, building on the stalwart Vegie Bar and more recently Yong's Green Food.<br/><br/>Unfortunately, Madame K's does not come up to par with the previous two. In fact, it's downright dismal.<br/><br/>Service was slow, it was difficult to communicate with the staff, politeness was met with blank stares, everything took multiple tries.<br/><br/>A few heavily deep-fried pieces of mock chicken, desultory bits of lettuce and carrot and covered in cheap mayo (egg-based?) for about $15 is extremely cynical. Compare this to the generous and varied ~$10 house salad at Vegie Bar and tell me I don't have a point.<br/><br/>The coconut juice ($3.90) came in a small tumbler that was 90% ice. I couldn't even sip any juice with the straw. When I complained about the amount of ice, they returned it with the ice crushed instead. Still couldn't get any juice through the straw. A second complaint received an idiotic response - "just wait for the ice to melt" (needless to say it didn't).<br/><br/>The dishes my companions had were similarly devoid of quality or value. I don't mind paying upwards of $20 for vegetables and non-animal protein, but using the cheapest vegetable you can find and not much of it, and taking other shortcuts shows that you do not know your market and have no respect for food.<br/><br/>These guys are simply cashing in on a trend, and people will cotton on to this real quick. Brunswick St needs less of these crappy, uncreative and greedy establishments.

Go there if you are on a diet. We went there with 6 people and everybody got something different. All really liked their food but also agreed that it was simply not enough. I was still hungry after my main meal. If this restaurant is to survive, it should put more food on the plate - especially with the Veggie Bar as a direct neighbour. <br/><br/>Another big minus is that the beers offered are not vegan nor is there any vegan desert option.

Most of the food is great, flavours are wonderful even for a ravenous carnivor and serving size are fine. Our food came out at different times which was off putting but the food made an enjoyable experience!!! Will come back with vego girlfriend!

Solid choice. After 14 years of vegetarianism I've only warmed up to mock meat in the last couple of years, finally able to enjoy it without being concerned that means I'll rush back to a steak. The red curry with duck was delicious - lychees and red grapes are a sweet touch. My friend had the eggplant entree and it was succulent and delicious.

Every hipster and their fixie opts for a vegetarian diet these days, so I thought I’d share my favourite vegetarian restaurants in Melbourne.
MEL: HOT OR NOT
The food was all presented well but fell flat in terms of taste. The pancakes were ok, thin wheaten wraps encasing mock soy duck with a drizzle of sweet sauce. The wontons were full of juicy mushrooms but encased in a too-thick skin and the morsels were lifted only by the kick of chilli in the soy sauce.
