Review Smith And Deli - Fitzroy

Stopped by the new S&D for lunch today, 3ish weeks after their new venue opened. This new space is CLASSY. The take away section is swanky. I love the dine in canteen style space. There's no compromise with the quality of food. For $20 we got a main and 2 sides that we could eat all over again. 5 stars for how delicious the food is. 5 stars for the modern, sophisticated yet casual space. And 5 stars for the rock star staff especially during these trying times. Nice work. We will definitely be back again.

Pretty good vegan food. The parmageddon sandwich was the best. I thought it was chicken but apparently it is made out of tofu. I thought the plate is a little bit expensive. And they serve different sandwiches at the deli vs the cafeteria.

Love the new space. It’s got a lot of variety compared to the previous venue, plus a massive, light-filled dining area perfect for a quick breakfast or lunch. The canteen-style plates are a fun novelty with interesting options that rotate daily. I tried the chicken pot pie plus a pesto pasta salad, roasted pumpkin and a veg frittata, all of which was high quality and very well flavoured. At $28 for the large size, it’s not a lunch I would purchase daily, but if you want a more affordable option there are plenty of sandwiches under $20.

Absolutely love the new store! Have been twice now and sat down in the diner/deli and loved the easy buffet style service, so convenient and so quick to get a full meal! The first meal the weekend before Christmas (chicken pot pie & roasted pumpkin with gravy) was incredible. They are a new store with limited staff due to the current covid spike, I wish the below reviewers would have patience whilst their team navigate this insane and stressful time. You don’t need to slander a business in reviews to give constructive feedback. Will be coming back again and again and looking forward to see how they grow and improve! :)

I’m so in love with the new location! Gone are the days of queuing round the block and waiting on the side of the road for your order (which was always worth it regardless), now you have the option of popping in to grab the old fa pyrite like the amazing sandwiches and pies, OR grabbing some of the new canteen lunch options and dining in. The canteen options are to die for, very much on the level of the Smith & Daughters dinner menu but with a mix-and-match vibe. Obsessed!

Beautiful place but very busy. There was only one staff doing five people’s order in the dine in area. The dine in area was also confusing and staff had to explain to each person how it worked. It was simply ordering in the counter but the layout made it look like we got to pick out things.

Amazing experience with my takeaway. Walking in I was immediately impressed with the display and layout of all the food. All the labels are super easy to read and everything looks so delicious! The staff were so friendly and I can’t wait to come back to dine in. 10/10 food and experience, you just go!

My goodness this is good. Their rotating daily menu has some amazing food. The coffee is top notch. The breakfast options are great and they ALSO do dinner. Service 10/10 and their deli + produce range is quality and fresh. You gotta go here.

My wife and I went there just on the weekend. Sadly being from Brisbane this was only our first time. Now my wife loves this place and it's food more than me. The food rules...the staff ruled...the food names ruled...the music ruled...Melbourne rules even more because of this place.

Pleease open a chain in Portland, Or (also a big vegan city)!! I had a yummy sandwich and some cold pesto Italian pasta and both were soo good. I’m very impressed with the quality of the food. I’ll be back tomorrow for a meal! Yum. This place is really a vegan’s dream. I also really appreciated the friendly staff. We had a nice interaction.

Visited your shop last weekend while I was down from nsw. And i must say it was well worth the visit the Oreo Cheesecake was delicious and the strawberry cream brownie to die for will definitely be back next visit. Do you courier to nsw

The best food and excellent service. Not just for vegans, also good for people trying to eat less meat. Never disappointed love this place x

Always friendly smiling staff who go the extra mile. Food is always impressive and never ceases to amaze. Not a vegan but take vegan and non vegan friends here often and it always rates highly for customer service and food amongst my mates. Love it and everyone should stop by once in a while.

Best vegan food around. Every visit is a treat. Staff are legends and a dog-friendly space keeps my corgi happy with plenty of pats.
Rachael Germano
Wow. Who knew a sandwich could be so exciting?? I only wish this place had seating, as I don't live locally and have nowhere to eat them afterwards! Even so, I will keep returning for the great service and high quality goods. You certainly keep me eating vegan!

It’s a vegan’s dream From the hot and cold savoury dishes to the desserts, not to mention the take home ready meals and products. The staff are always divine

Donuts! Almond croissants! All vegan yummy things! Great coffee. And fantastic service, especially from the gorgeous lady with pink hair who served us today. You made everything extra, extra special. Thank you.

Best vegan sandwich place in Melbourne. Amazing selection of sweets too. It's a bonus that they sell a selection of vegan groceries aswell.
Michael Haworth
Vegan cafe that allows dogs. I found my new favourite spot. Well done.
Sharon Scarfone
Fantastic place, great food and the staff are efficient and friendly.

I scored the last egg and bacon roll this morning, and it blew my little mind.
Eleanore Howe
I ordered two sandwhiches, the egg one and another one called 'legless' and something... Both were delicious and the service was so good. The chai latte was pretty bland sadly, but everything else was so great, thanks guys!

Preorder online pickup

Great vegan deli items for creating lunch at home.

Roast beef $6, tasty and nice texture (replicating deli roast beef).

Chicken salad, $8, great flavours and textures in this.

Normally I would stand in line being really indecisive, so having all the items laid out on the screen with descriptions makes it a very pleasant shopping experience. As the quantities works well for making 1-2 sandwiches/meals getting a selection of items means you are sorted for a week.

Back in 2014, my socks were knocked off and my non-vegan taste buds were blown away by a delicious vegan meal that proved you don’t need things like butter, cheese, cream etc (pretty much all the good stuff non-vegans embrace) to make a dish outstanding. Said vegan meal took place at the launch of Smith and Daughters. There was not a single person in that room who wasn’t excited by the vegan fare brought out, and it seems much of Melbourne has been in agreement with this since - Smith and Daughters, alongside their second venue Smith and Deli, remain highly raved about as two of Melbourne’s most prominent and best vegan eateries.

Vegan deli heaven! So many sandwich options and I decided on 'The Godfather' based on lovely employee's recommendation.
Because I had never eaten salami/pepperoni before, I didn't know it was supposed to be spicy so it was a little bit too spicy for my liking but everything else in it was delicious.
✨ Pros: Everything is plant-based here 😍 Donuts, cookies, cheeses, meats. I bought so many things!
✨ Cons: Bit pricey (but totally worth it)

This place has received a lot of attention for their delicious and convenient style vegan sandwiches but has stolen the spotlight from restaurants around Fitzroy after appearing on this season’s Masterchef Australia!

Ordered:
The god father

Review:
The line during quarantine was definitely long and the takeaway system has been efficiently been organised so social distancing has been achieved. The god father sandwich was delicious, crispy bread stuffed with vegan pepperoni and various pickles and veggies. The star of this was definitely the bread, it had that chewy yet crispy texture the let down was definitely how greasy it was, oil coated the paper bag that I received and the taste of the sandwich was rather acidic. The pickles inside were already sour and paired with the sour dough it was rather an over kill of tartness!
3.5/5
I have seen this place a number of times so I was keen to visit. Smith and Deli has some good take away fast food options such as hot rolls w vegan filings.

The service is nice and efficient. I ordered a Free Willy hot roll which was tuna and cheese. This tasted alright but it was way too greasy for me, and it was really messy to eat.

Don't get me wrong, it was nice but the more I ate the more greasy it became which I wasn't expecting.

I also ordered a hot Parmageddon toastie, which was Chicken Parma, napoli sauce and mozzarella cheese. And whoa, it was HUGE lol.

This was good too, although once again a bit too greasy for me.

The deli food looked so good so I grabbed 2 chicken schnitzels which I coooked at home and they were really good.

Overall I'd definitely go back for the deli section.
@veganeats @vegetarianfoodlover

All my photos were deleted by Zomato so I've reposted them.

These guys recently revamped their store and in doing so have gotten rid of its charm. It might as well be a convenience store. The service has become impersonal, to the point of brusque and condescending. Most of the sandwiches are no longer made to order, but are batch-made and squashed in a bag before being shoved in a fridge like the sandwiches you see at 7-Eleven, only with more environmentally-unfriendly packaging. The laminated menu that is used in-store is out of date - there's a sandwich on there that they apparently "don't make" anymore! - not that the staff seem to care, though. If you can't have or don't like a certain ingredient that's put in the pre-made sandwiches, the staff will unhelpfully go "Sorry, too bad". Prices have risen. Portion sizes have shrunk. The desserts, which used to sit in their glass case gleaming like jewels, have been shoved to the side of the store and look defeated. I'm sure the food still tastes good, but I was so disgusted by the 'squashed-guts' look of the sandwiches in the fridge - and the punched, dimply look of the desserts - that I really couldn't eat any of them. Let alone look at them.
Longtime fans of S&D, be warned - everything you loved about this joint has died.

Mmm...abit underwhelmed. The bread for toastie tasted cardboardy, this is bought on a Saturday morning, could it be old bread? Bought some doughnuts. Its very doughy. Disappointed. First and would be last visit.
Yeah Nah Ok Alright
This place made me move from Perth to Melbourne. Seriously better than most aspects of life.
Ilovefood
Amazing selection. Service is great. Friendly staff. Food is incredible! Could not recommend this deli more.

Amazing bagel, had raisin and cinnamon and it was so fresh and tasty. Had cream cheese filling and would definitely go back for more

I have been here a couple of times and have never been disappointed! It was actually the first meal I had in Melbourne, a bacon and egg muffin with a coco black. It's honestly so hard to believe it's completely vegan, so delish! I have also tried the 'Club Sandwiches Not Seals'. Again, amazing. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. A great selection of other vegan treats in store, lovely workers who seem to really love their job. Will definitely visit again before leaving Melbourne.
WhenFoodMeetsFiona
Ordered:
- Snuffle Truffle
- Parmageddon

Snuffle Truffle didn’t have a lot of flavour to it, I really only tasted the multi grain brain. The Parmageddon, on the other hand, was mind blowing with its intense flavours all over and crunchiness of the bread. Highly rate the Parmageddon and I’m down to go back and try their other sandwiches!

Seriously good vegan treats in the back streets of Fitzroy. It's hard to believe that this deliciousness is actually vegan. With a funky fitout, and a cool deli atmosphere; Smith and Deli is takeaway only, but not your standard takeaway. The lines can get long, but it's worth the wait for this amazing food. The staff make sure you are served quickly, and are super nice.

With an awesome range of freshly made sandwiches, and the most delicious range of ever changing sweet treats; you can be sure to find something that appeals to you. Everything is homemade with the best ingredients, and the taste is fantastic. Smith and Deli has a great reputation for very good reason. The food here is that good that even non vegans flock here for a tasty lunch or treat, and who can argue with that.
Y
Delicious sandwiches and other vegan goodies. I love the changing of desserts and pastries. Perfect place to buy vegan products as well.
The staff are quite friendly and they make sandwiches from until the afternoon. Most of the sandwiches are delicious, I wish they were less pricey.
My recommendations are the egg sandwich and the tuna sandwich.

Never thought that a vegan sandwich would be this good! I ordered the truffle shuffle and it was pretty good but I’m not sure if it’s my tastebuds not being used to some vegan ingredients but there is a slight strange aftertaste 🤭 Also, I think paying $12 for a small sandwich... is abit absurd. I mean, yes I understand that it’s vegan ingredients and I guess you’re paying for quality ingredients but I still feel that $12 is abit much. Nonetheless, it’s a great sandwich and for all my vegan mates, this place is definitely a good place to visit for maybe groceries or their sandwiches 🌞
The Gluten-Free Foodie
Don't know what else to say but it was totally delicious! Loved the dishes we had and the servings were pretty good. A great range of GF options so my non-GF father could enjoy the meal without feeling limited in options.
Whalesfoodadventure
Amazing service. Really good vegan sandwiches. Ordered the truffle shuffle, egg mcmartinez, croissant, brownie and raspberry chocolate crumble. Croissant was nice and crispy. Brownie tasted amazing with great textures. The raspberry chocolate crumble was the best!

Smith and deli is an awesome vegan spot, serving up some really delicious sandwiches! Highly recommend that you try their ‘little Havana’ if you love pesto and cheese! I really wanted to try their “chicken parma” but it was sold out, so it must be really good!
Truth Hurts
This place is awesome! I highly recommend visiting even if you aren't a vegan. The options are so good and incredibly tasty you won't be able to tell the difference. I had the Egg Martinez with bacon and sausage topped with bbq and chipotle sauce - it was super tasty. I'm going back tomorrow!!

This place is popular for a reason!

Smith and Deli has truly made a safe haven and standard for all things Vegan. We love the atmosphere, staff and great selection of products.

They boast a wide menu of sandwiches (stop at sandwich #1 (little havana)) which does not disappoint. Also freshly baked goods each day and a good selection of hot and cold drinks (grab the $2 filter).

Chef Shannon and Mo have done a lot to make this a community favourite of the last few years and we hope they wear this knowledge with pride.
Anna Banana
Absolutely phenomenal. The "nobody calls me chicken salad" sandwich is my absolute favourite. Could not recommend highly enough (even my non-vegan sister loves it!)
Amy
I had the foghorn legless. The vegan bacon honestly tasted so real I had to pull apart the sandwich to further investigate! Overall - service was ok and the sandwich was tasty!
Sarah Parapat
Used to come here at least twice a fortnight when I still lived in Carlton.
Now that I'm moving a bit south, this is the first time I came back and boy, they didn't disappoint!
Ordered "Hail Seitan!" (because YAS! For PINEAPPLE in savoury food) and iced long black and it was the perfect lunch for me. Bread perfectly toasted, cheese gooey and melted through. Yum! ❤️❤️

We got a meatball sandwich and a ‘no anaphylaxis’ sandwich. Meatball was a great time because it has fantastic pesto in there. The anaphylaxis one is also good but kinda just a Bahn mi so. Would go back for more banter with the funny blonde worker
Skip James
Food is good, lots of sauce and flavour. Fake meat options do taste a lot like the real thing. Prices are very high, understood a lot of labour and other things go into the final product, but because of the vegan label it gives them the free run to charge what they want. The coffee is very bad, cannot taste the coffee flavour, it is more like milky water. If you want a good coffee, head around the corner to doomsday store. The grocery section is also overpriced, but a lot of good options you might not be able to find otherwise.

Pretty much anything that needs to be said about this place has been all covered in previous posts. Despite all vegan offerings, a solid deli and sandwich store in it's own right. I think I've tried maybe half of the sandwich options...vegan tuna, egg, chicken is still quite discernible from the real thing but I enjoyed them all nonetheless. Bonus points for good bread. Would recommend to anyone to try out even if you're not vegan just for something new and different.

EXTREMELY disappointing and underwhelming experience. After seeing so much hype around Smith & Deli, I made it a point to check it out in the week my family was visiting Melbourne. The store itself is very cute and has a lot of Vegan products (faux meats, crisps, candy, pastas, sauces etc), however, the food leaves little to be desired. I ordered 2 sandwiches that are constantly recommended; the "Wiggum" and the "Parmageddon" (not pictured) and the price I paid is OUTRAGEOUS, especially given that they were both lacklustre. If it weren't for the decent customer service, and the fact that I'm generally in support of any company that promotes veganism (and vegan food), the rating would've been a 1. The Wiggum was the better of the two sandwiches, because the flavours sort of worked well together. However, I would recommend that they maybe warm the tofu and add a bit more flavour to it, and increase the amount of sauce in the sandwich, because the ratio of (STALE) bread to filling is ridiculous, it just made the sandwich dry and harder to eat. The Parmageddon on the other hand, I wouldn't even recommend. There were so many flavours (pesto, "cheese", napoli sauce etc), it was overwhelming, yet underwhelming at the same time. On top of that, the roll was dry and stale as well, and the only thing that helped was the fact that the filling was warm. None of the components in that sandwich worked together. Now, the real let down is the price. The prices are just ludicrous considering there are places in the area like the Vegie Bar where you can have a good tasting, well portioned meal that leaves you fully satisfied. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend this place, and I would instead say take your money somewhere more worthwhile like the Vegie Bar - or even Lord of the Fries.

Bless the fact that this place exists seriously :') how awesome is it that a vegan friggen deli exists. Tried the Rubinstein for my first time and was not disappointed, so amazing to see people doing something so great. Inspiring, treat yourself to a sandwich here for sure! Can't wait to try them all ❤️
Connie
I really enjoyed the sandwiches from this place. The tuna melt was really delicious but slightly oily and the bread in the tofu was slightly stale but still really enjoyed all the flavours. The strawberry cookie was seriously amazing -100% recommend

I now completely understand the hype about Smith & Deli, which has become my fav vegan place in Melb (and yes everything here is vegan despite what the menu looks like). There was a reasonable queue to order and a bit of a wait for the food, but definitely worth it. I ordered the egg mcmartinez, and it was delicious! The bbq sauce I had enhances the flavour wonderfully. Next was the reubenstein and this was also great. There was a good amount of 'pastrami'; the vegan version isn't as salty as the real thing and feels healthier which is a bonus. The pizza slice was nice although would've preferred it a little warmer. The cinnamon donut was awesome. Will be back to try more sandwiches. Definitely recommend, regardless of whether you're vegan or not.

I love love love Smith and Deli. It’s my favourite vegan go-to in Melb. The menu is extensive and literally has something for everyone. The staff are super friendly and always smiling which I commend them for considering how crazy busy it gets in there. They have heaps of gluten free and nut free options too! It’s best to come and line up just before 11.30am (when the lunch menu starts) as the ordering queue can get super long. The wiggum is the best sandwich in my opinion. The desserts are incredible too!
Ted Wu
I can see what’s with all the hype. Sandwich is definitely delicious, with plenty of fillings and flavors. Bit of disappointed that they didn’t have apple fritter since I saw on their Instagram page that they were selling them. Limited options of desserts, but they all looked amazing. Kinda overpriced, but overall a pleasant experience. Staff was nice and efficient.
Daniel McNiece
Bought a Rocky sandwich. Quite tasty but Waaaay overpriced and coffee also expensive and undrinkable.....
Disappointed after driving a long way to try.
Just shows you can't always trust the rating!
Fike
If you’re looking for wide variety vegan desserts smith and deli is the right place. All of their foods are vegan and they offer not only desserts but also coffee, some selections of meals and savory bites and vegan snacks as well. The place has takeaway concept i doubt they offer dine in. Definitely one of best vegan cafe i would come back for more!
Sab Katerel
This is one of my favourite little cafes in Fitzroy. Have been here several times, and have ordered the Truffle Shuffle, a grilled sandwich with vegan ham, vegan cheese and truffle oil. It is delicious - still warm when I receive it, the cheese is melted just enough and the truffle oil is fragrant and flavours the sandwich beautifully. I can hardly fault Smith and Deli.
They not only have a great variety of sandwiches that you can order to takeaway, but they also have other various baked goods as well as a huge range of vegan wares in their fridges, such as fake meat products to bake at home, vegan ice creams, and vegan confectionery too. Each time I have come here I have also ordered an almond milk iced latte, which has been absolutely delicious and I have demolished it in minutes. It is clear everyone at Smith and Deli has a clear understanding of how non-dairy milks work, as there has never been unmixed sediment at the bottom of my cup!
As someone who doesn't eat meat chiefly out of a general dislike for it, Smith and Deli's vegan meats are so like the real thing that it is disarming. However, they are incredibly delicious and textually pleasing that my dislike of meat can be thrown to the wayside.
However, if you choose to visit Smith and Deli, especially on the weekend, be prepared to wait a while for your delicious wares, as they are so popular that I have seen a queue go out their door during peak times.
TeenyFit
This place is busy but for all the right reasons! The line moves quick too, which is always a bonus. Awesome spot for all lovers of sandwiches

Went here quite late today, around 3.20pm. I had Hail Seitan which tastes so good!!!! I’m glad that I first time came here and ordered this, just like meat and cheesy sandwich 🥪

My boiiii ordered his Club Sandwich 🥪 He also had a cookie and a brownie hahah. They were all delish!!!!! Yummmmm
Anna
We need a Smith and Deli in Sydney. Badly. Although that may not be good for my wallet.

Just soooo good!! The egg muffin was pretty much a maccas mcmuffin but 1000x better. How in the world. Only downside is the $7 price tag for the tiny portion. I could have gobbled down at least 5. But seriously price is not important when the food is this good!!

Loved it! 💜
SJFU
Had the Reubenstein. Rich and delicious but not sickening. Excellent sandwich, vegan or otherwise. It is absolutely massive, half is enough for smaller eaters. The ingredients are high quality and probably pretty expensive to buy yourself. Condiments drip everywhere though, it's a messy but satisfying experience to eat. I love the authentic neighbourhood deli feel, and the incredible menu names. Dying to come back.

---
Revisit:
The Godfather is very tasty, but not as good (nor as bulky) as the Reubenstein. I asked for no chillis but alas, there were chillis. No harm done, and it's my one and only gripe about this wonderful place.
Kirsten Biacsi
the prices look steep ($15 for a sandwich??) BUT- when you take that first bite of some delicious and crulety free allergy friendly "meatball" toasty, youll be asking yourself "how do they not charge more????". As a coaliac vegan, a meatball sub has kind of always been out of the question, but smith and deli and their AMAZING lunch options were so wonderful to cater to my alllergies and preferences. and it blew my mind.
Maria Valentic
Smith and Deli, or as my brother would say, Smith & Delicious, damn these guys are good and innovative in the vegan scene. I religiously come here. Coffee's the best and so are the donuts. I cannot recommend them enough. Employees are nice and friendly too. There is always something new to try. Worth the near hour drive I take to get my fix haha!
Nutsandbolts
My partner loves his croissants and has the highest praise for the offering here. The Reubenstein ticked all the boxes for delicious. Be warned, the sanga is MASSIVE! We love being able to drop by and pick up various refrigerated items such as mayo, Beyond Burgers, sausages and yummy cheese. The service is stellar and always comes with a smile!
Kim
I loooovvveeeee Smith and deli. The pesto grilled cheese, tuna salad, rocky (with rye), rubenstein and croissant are amazing. The employees are super nice. I just wish they had some tables and chairs, turn it into a proper lil cafe!
Tara Nath
Came here the last time I was in Melbourne and I was very impressed. It's so hard to find nice vegetarian food and Smith and Deli exceeded my expectations. I had the vegan BLT and a doughnut. The "bacon" tasted just like the real thing! Be prepared to wait in line for a while as it does get very busy, even on weekdays. Can't wait to come back here again!
Rhiannon
Only downfall is that there can often be a very long wait, and the item you want gets taken by the person before you (happened three times haha!)

Some of the best sandwiches, coffee and treats. I adore this place so much.
Lifecycle
Awesome vegan deli. Great vibe. I really enjoyed my sandwich although my dining companion has forbade me from returning because he thought he was going to have a real Reuben sandwich from an American deli and the pastrami turned out to be vegan. I got some laughs but he was not impressed with the deception. This man takes his Reuben sandwich way too seriously.
TigerTreeEats
Omg I can’t believe this ‘egg McMuffin’ aka mc Martinez was vegan!! The coffee was awesome too! Wish there were tables and chairs outside. Scoffed it all outside. Good range of vegan pantry items and also frozen items to purchase.
Borderline Sunshine
Just a damn good bloody sandwich. This was my first time visiting Smith and Deli and I was not disappointed. I ordered two sandwiches because I couldn't pick just one! I chose The Wiggam and The Better Bundy. So good. Will be back to try the others!
Hanmac
Such an awesome place, great customer service, delicious vegan fare with bottomless options to keep you coming back for more, and always a line of people out the door! Perfect to take for a picnic. The iced coffee with ice cream was phenomenal on a 30 degree day! The Anaphylaxis of Evil could’ve used more satay sauce as it was a little dry, but everything was very flavourful and filling overall!
Dee Dee
One of my favourites. I don't mind waiting in a long queue but it can be a bit much at times as the deli is small so trying to squeeze past people can be uncomfortable if you want to get something off a shelf . Excellent sandwiches and pies and everything really, though the donuts have always been too light on the filling. Have had a couple of small cookies in the past that were way overpriced for something that looked like my kids made it but other baked goods have been superb like the sticky date rolls and the deep dish pizza.
Ilovevegetarianmelbourne
One of the best places to get sandwiches and doughnuts! The thing that is hard to believe is that they're vegan! Staff a are wonderful bunch and the variety is great!
Ingrid Roumi
Honestly everything was amazing!!! Service, super cool and friendly staff, creative menu, great vibes, cool deco, really felt like a Jewish New Yorker deli, and oh my...the food tested amazing, only "negative" point, the sauce on the little Havana sandwich is a bit overwhelming for my taste...but beside that, I also loved the fact that I didn't have to pay attention and could eat everything from their menu fully vegan!!!thanks you guys you made my day :)
Brekkycakes
Having not quite satisfied my doughnut cravings yet, we went off to Fitzroy in search of doughnuts. Smith & deli is a 100% vegan store selling from sandwiches to pastries & coffee as well as vegan groceries.

They only had one doughnut flavour but apparently the flavours change daily. The pb&j flavour ($4) was actually nicer than I expected – the glaze was distinctively peanut butter and quite creamy with bits of peanuts(yay for crunchy peanut butter!) The doughnut itself is quite heavy and dense but is rather spongy and chewy which was something I really enjoyed. It wasn’t too sweet which I really appreciated and end up becoming rather filling. Couldn’t even tell it was vegan and wouldn’t mind coming back to try their other flavours although I prefer my doughnuts to be lighter and fluffier. My friend got one of their sandwiches and said it was pretty good although it was a bit annoying to eat as the mayo/sauces went everywhere.

Service was friendly, although if you order the sandwiches it kind of takes a while(but there was also a big line). Worth looking at all the stock inside the store as there is a rather large collection of vegan products and especially ice creams and chocolates
50% Coffee 50% Food
Everything was good the food, the atmosphere and the service. Got the vegan Reuben sandwich. It was fantastic and felt/taste like real meat. There is a huge crowds which surprised me as i thought I was jus a deli store which also served sandwich. Highly recommend
Purita Mok
I miss having sandwiches, nice simple sandwiches I always see at supermarkets or cafes that are never vegan. So I am super happy that I got to try the Foghorn Legless and the Home Alone one!!! They were both very delicious and filling. Because you were so popular even though it was a weekday, it got cramped and stuffy inside your shop while we lined up for 10 minutes and after while we waited for 15 minutes for our food. But the waiting was worth it! Wish there was more lighting in your shop too so more colour could bounce off your donuts so they look as bright as your Instagram posts!
Bradley Davis
Great sandwiches and sweets. The sauce on the buffalo vampire slayer is ssssssooooooooooooo good with the tofu slabs you want to cry when it's over!
Dale Zeinheiger Culpin
Now I'm a big meat eater, I'll usually opt for meat over anything else any day of the week. So a Vegan shop isn't going to be a number one choice of mine. But this time we decided to try something new. I was craving a toastie and we were on our way past Fitzroy anyway, a few people have recommended this place to me so had to try. Ordered the Pesci Pesto for breakfast and damn it was tasty! Even the cheese was nice. The only problem was the time it took between ordering a toastie and recieving said toastie. It was a little busy but not too busy. But there was still 20 minutes of waiting. It was still an awesome toastie though.
I. D.
Had a tofu satay sandwich from Smith and Deli. It was pretty tasty. My friend's sandwich looked amazing. Wouldn't mind going again. There is a lot of fake meat which I am not really into so I wouldn't mind some more veggie offers on the menu. Friendly staff.
Jomd
🙏🙏🙏 best vegan place in northcote/Fitzroy! 100% recommend to anyone (vegan or not) looking for great food. Service is friendly and efficient 🎉🎉🎉
Sarah
AMAZINGGGG!!!!! Literally so so so delicious, I had a parmageddon which was good and my friend had the Foghorn Legless, would definitely recommend either of them :) can't wait to go back
Merry Rourou
It's always packed on Saturday because of their amazing vegan croissants... the food is super comforting (fatty and salty cheese and mock meat), convenient I love it !

Chicken salad sandwich was average, faux chicken was too chewy for my liking and found the sourdough had too sour of a taste it overpowered the fillings. They have a nice variety of vegetarian and vegan groceries as mentioned previously
Yasmin
This place is pretty amazing and can be so busy. I've tried my way through the sandwiches and my favorites are as salami and heil satan. However last time i ordered the heil satan, there was so much sauce on it that I could barely eat it as it was really overpowering every other flavor and the bread was completely soaked by it. I also wasn't sold on the raspberry chocolate croissant.
Would rather not come here on Saturdays as the place is super packed and you can wait up to 30-45min for your sandwiches (most of the time you spend lining up, sandwiches take about 15mins). They also sell great vegan cheese (and anything possible), great varieties of everything!
Definitely worth a visit and revisit.

This is fail proof for me, I can't rave enough about the food and the service.
Tried all the sandwiches and my faves are: egg mcmartinez, piggy bunny, nobody calls me chicken, reubenstein, hail seitan, home alone, rocky, and assamalakum.
Love the takeaway too, standouts being mushroom pate, arancini, and cheesy mince pie (all of which I've only seen that one time unfortunately). Garlic dip and donuts also delicious.
Sophie Stephens
Busy but the croissants and almond croissants are amazing! So much vegan goodies to buy, it's worth going to if you're vegan or becoming vegan!
Sara Maria
I followed these guys for over a year on instagram now and knew that when I get to Melbourne I have to check out if it lives up to all the outstanding reviews. It met all of my expectations and more! It was very busy when we got there and even tho the wait was a bit long, I would go there
e v e r y d a y if I would live closer by. The Rocky sandwich was amazing, the croissant just like I remembered and all of it bought me SO much joy. All the groceries they have there are incredible! I will come back asap.
Lives up and beyond (my) expectations! By far one of the most delicious sandwiches I've had, although I should not compare a socially conscious vegan eatery to the likes of Katz Deli... The chilli mocha on drinks special was also perfect for a soggy winter day! My only comment is, can you open 7 days a week, pretty please?
The Devious Diner
Love the idea of an all vegan place where you don't have to worry about asking for vegetarian/vegan options. Smith and Deli is a pretty good choice for a quick bite during your lunch hour. I got the Reubenstein and it was Delish. A little too heavy for my liking but still tasty! Also a great place do some quick vegan grocery shopping.
Eatdrinkbe_merry
Had a delicious meal at Smith and Daughters on Friday night..... so of course had to try Smith and Deli the next day. An innovative VEGAN all day breakfast menu eg. Truffle Shuffle, Egg Mcmartinez or Velvet Elvis! Sandwiches are served from 11.30am - 4pm and we like the Parmageddon and the Reubenstein! Such a great place to stock up on hard to find pantry items and they even have dairy free Ben and Jerry's! Must say the vegan croissants are definitely worth coming back for! If you are coming for a hot drink....bring a reusable cup and get 50c off! Amazing place and only wish we lived nearby to take full advantage of this great place!
LJ
I am obsessed with this place! Everyone is so friendly. I used to live near it now that I am south side it's hard to make my way there as Saturdays are my only option for going. The line is worth it! The mock turkey club is something I dream about. They make being vegan even easier. I love it!
Iris Myandowski
I have begun systematically working my way through the entire menu, start to finish, top to bottom. So far, so good. The chai is also very good.
Edit 24/06/17: after trying the Home Alone turkey roll I've had to change my review to a 5/5. This place is magic.
Edithmarina.rock
Such great sandwiches! Delicious mock meats and mock cheeses. The friend zone (ham cheese tomato toastie) and parmageddon (chicken snitzel, pesto, cheese & Napoli sauce roll) are both out of this world! Their almond croissants are delicious also. Highly rate this place especially when you are on the go or want to eat lunch in the nearby park when the sun is out!

Vegan review - one of my favourite places to eat in Melbourne. The sandwiches really hit the spot!!! The staff are very friendly and are always happy to answers all your questions. The only downfall would be is there is no where to sit and eat.
Thuaners
This place is amazing!! I actually came here initially because one of the staff is a mad Twin Peaks fan and they were making twin peaks themed drinks! So cool! But then i had to also try the food! Jacqui recommended i try the cheese and pesto sandwich and it was delicious! And i had to get a donut, because of twin peaks heheh... and it was scrumptious!! Im learning that vegan food can taste so delicious! :D

Superb ambience. Stepping inside this cosy shop really takes you somewhere special. It was really interesting to see the types of ingredients and products they sold (many flavours of dairy free ice cream!!). Now onto their main focus, sandwiches.

I appreciate the appealing names and large variety of choices. It was clear to see fresh bread being used (and thankfully not all menu items used sourdough) and fresh cuts of cold pressed meats. However, the layers of my sandwich was a little off for my little Havana Cuban sandwich. All ingredients were delicious (home made pickles, yum!) but there was too much sauce and pickle juice, meaning the acidity overtook the whole sandwich and it wasn't possible to taste the turkey or salami. It wasn't a particularly bad sandwich, it just tasted as if the person who made it had never tasted it before.

My partner ordered the better bundy. A BLT with avocado. Their bacon was nice and smoky and heaps better than the conventional bacon you can get at Coles but not quite on the same level as thick cut bacon. Overall, you can't go wrong with the simple yet delicious options. Will definitely be back to try the other menu items.

I honestly have so much love for Smith and Deli!! Every sandwich I've tried so far has been amazing, except for the smoked salmon bagel which I guess is more of an acquired taste thing! I come here every few weeks to stock up on all the vegan goodies and stuff myself with some delicious sandwiches and coffee! Love love love ❤❤❤❤❤
Jemma
Ordered the Anaphylaxis of Evil, the textures and flavours of the ingredients were amazing, however the bread roll was as stale as they get. I'll come early next time, lunch gets pretty busy.
Kristina
I have had a few of the sandwiches and have found them average. I avoid buying them these days because I can make one that i like more and that is much cheaper.
But omg the other things in the counter, the sweets.... they are a m a z i n g! So exciting having something new and exciting to try every time. I am still so excited about the first cheese and vegemite scroll I got from here. Hadnt had one in YEARS and it was so gooood. I want one right now!!!
Emily
Vegan heaven and definitely one of the highest places to get a sandwhich on my radar. The atmosphere is always incredible. It's almost like a home away from home. The lines are always massive but trust me, it's worth it. When you're waiting for any of the items from the enormous menu, buy a pint of the Ben & Jerry's dairy-free PB & Cookies. The last time I went on a cold day they were giving out hot mini cinnamon doughnuts... Does it get any better than that?
Mihana Demirovic
I'm not vegan but was thoroughly impressed with my sandwich! I got the Heil Seitan which tasted almost identical to a BBQ chicken pizza (but with "turkey"). It was crunchy, cheese was beautifully melted and the pineapples added a nice sweetness. I also ordered a coconut milk hot chocolate and a vanilla halva bar for dessert. Both were amazing and not overly sweet.
Downside: Long wait for a sandwhich, and a little pricey. Overall I would definitely come back :)
Fiona
Well this is probably the oddest way to say it but: I've just thrown their club sandwich in the bin. Why? Because the bacon is so much like bacon it was too much. It was so overpowering and it actually brought back memories of bacon (18 years and counting), this is a strange compliment but it's definitely a compliment! My faves are the Ruebenstein and the Wiggum. If you’re missing egg or tuna salad sangas you’re in for a treat as not only is the taste pretty good, the texture is also spot on. All their cakes and pastries are so much like the real thing it's incredible. Great selection of vegan groceries too and they usually have some good home meals to take with you.

My only complaint is how long it can take but I believe they’re looking to extend the space. And I’ll still come and check out the queue because the food is delicious and worth it! Plus if you’re really against the clock get the lunchbox special because it’s always ready made and served with minimal wait.
Bobby
Great sandwiches! It amazes me that they are so good and vegan. Everything is high quality with lots of different options and very tasty. The dessert slices and biscuits are delicious too. A little pricey, but overall very good.
Moneta Tan
These guys are absolute wizards when it comes to vegan food. I honestly don't know how they do it. I love this place like you wouldnt believe, and I'm not even vegan anymore!
Meryem Arpaci
Love this place. Always a favourite to visit. I wish they had seating, I'd probably visit more often. Their deli style sandwiches are the the best!!
Mad Lamb
This place is so good. I'm not vegan, but I always come here for some of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life. Get the philly steak! The substitute steak is better than actual steak!
MaraschinoM
The Wiggum is next level! I love that this place exists. I can't wait to try some of the other sandwiches. They also seem to have a good range of vegan goods like sauces, dairy substitutes etc. I will definitely be back!
Emma
I love this place. Highly recommend getting the parmaggedon as a sandwich instead of a roll- easier to eat and super yum! Love the chicken salad as well, and all the baked goods I've had. Pictured: the mince pie and kimchi scroll, parmaggedon on sourdough, and chicken salad on rye.
Tomas
Smith and Deli is fantastic. I actually get quite sad when I've gone to eat there and found them closed on one of their few days off. As a vegan bakery you would be supervised to see lots of meaty sounding thing on the menu like sausage rolls and meat pies. Well these are all vegan and use plant based ingredients. The food is delicious, the cakes and sweets are brilliant. Staff are happy to help you decide (even though they are constantly busy) and very cool. My hot tip is to grab your take away meal, walk up the road and sit under a tree in the park while you bite into your meal. Love this place.
Caitlin Monnery
I don't know... on the one hand I really appreciate what they're doing and I understand that vegan ingredients are usually more expensive than non-vegan but for $14 I was expecting a lot more. I had the Parmageddon and while it tasted nice, it was a bit dry - given the standard way of serving Parma I was expecting there to be almost too much Napoli sauce but there was hardly any. My girlfriend had the Godfather and had similar comments about being nice but not worth $13.
The service was really friendly and they have some great stock in the store so I think I'll have to give it another chance and see if my feelings change.

Updated 7/01/17:
I went to Smith & Deli yesterday with the sole purpose of getting one of their pizza croissants I saw on their instagram and it was so worth it. I have really missed croissants since cutting out dairy and this was the real deal. At $12 I still feel it's a little overpriced, though as it is filled with faux salami I can appreciate it would cost more to make and it was delicious.
I also realised that on both visits I have been served by one of the owners who is so lovely and it's great to see how involved she is with the daily running. I have raised my rating to a 4.
Cynthia
Hands down the best vegan eatery I have ever been to. I dream of this place cos I live in Brisbane. The cravings are endless, and UNFORgiving. Their rendition of the bacon and egg muffin -the egg mcmartinez- is incredible ✨
Ellie
The answer to my prayers. My adult willy wonka chocolate factory. Wish it wasn't so expensive but worth it in the end as there is nothing else like it.
If beetroot was added as an extra option it would be a dream come true as I always bring my own beetroot to add to the sandwiches, especially the free willy!
Jannyyyyy
I had heard about this place for a while so my expectations were high. And they still totally exceeded them. Delicious food and great atmosphere!!!
Sweet Chilli
Ooh yeah just perfect! I was waiting to pick up a flower order from Vassette and ventured out the front of the shop and looked over to the left and watched the buzz in Smith and Deli. It was just too hard to resist, so I walked over and ordered a mix of the salads on display and a coffee. Perfect and very appetising. I had the beetroot and nut salad and the Italian coleslaw. It was fresh and the dressing left my taste buds popping. Highly recommend it!
RubenTheGoodGuy
Really great spot, great food, excellent service (even if there is a bit of a wait for your food). I would highly recommend this place, its a great Melbourne experience.
HonestCharley
Vegan sandwich paradise. Everything is tasty as all hell, and it's so handy being able to stock up on vegan goodies at the same time. I wish that there was a dining area to sit and eat (but there are parks nearby so I shouldn't complain), and I can't fault the excellent facade this space has and the authentic 'sandwich deli bar' feel of the place. A must for any vegan in Melbourne.

(Tuesday 18/10/2016)

Partner's review:

Smith and Deli, am personally all for vegan products and food! Cute place serving lots of vegan, gluten free, vegetarian options! Spacious and roomy, having their products neatly stake for customers view while you're waiting on your vegan sammiches to be served etc! Went there specifically after lunch, was super eager to try their vegan sammiches but belly was full to the brim so my partner and I had some takeaways of boysenberry brownie, vegemite scroll, ice black coffee and a box of Pana Chocolate. Ice black coffee had that fruity aftertaste, rather refreshing. Vegemite scroll was crusty at the edges, vegemite was lightly spread evenly over the scroll, each bite was a mix of doughy heaven and burst of umami flavors! Love it! Boysenberry brownie you say? Doesn't look like much, a bit flattened out if you'd asked me. Try it, and you probably will flip! That brownie is hands down the fudgiest and yummiest thing ever! Will be going back for those brownies for sure! Finding a parking spot round the block could be little tedious but nevertheless a good spot to grab coffee and a yummy healthy snack!

Whilst I remain still mostly undecided on how I rate the vegan but pretending to be meat fare of sister restaurant Smith & Daughters, I was keen to give Smith & Deli a try for an early morning savoury bite with a social difference. The store has a delightful deli-style feel to it and the perky staff member made for a great welcome. Unfortunately we will were earlier than 11:30am, meaning we had the more limited breakfast menu to try, and perhaps as a result, missed on on observing some of the highs others have reported.

I was amazed how comforting a vegan sandwich could taste like. It have officially become my vegan day first choice.
Kate
Dragged here by my vegetarian, sometimes-vegan sister. I was being pretty shitty and resentful because there are loads of great places in Fitzroy, there was a very long line and I was expecting it to be good but in a "this is good, for a vegan sandwich" kind of way. And far out I can see why people flock here because it was pretty darn good. The Reuben was great and didn't give off any creepy fake meat signals to my tastebuds. The ballenstein was good too but needed a richer and larger quantity of Napoli sauce. There was plenty of variety. All in all I wouldn't come back but if I ever try to eat vegan I'd be there every other day.

There is a reason people line up for 20mins for a Vegan sanger
My vote goes to:
Anaphylaxis
Fog Horn Leg Horn
The Little Havana
(and the awesome people work there)

Safe Harbour: Be prepared to impulse buy salted caramel coconut ice cream, pickles a bunch of other vegan treats.

Don't get discouraged by a bad experience here otherwise you'll miss out on some of the best sandwiches in Melb!!

Now that I've tried over a dozen sandwiches and snacks I can give you a proper review (detailed ingredients are shown on the blackboard menu):
The friend zone (burnt crust, plain) 3/10
Little Havana (sophisticated flavours) 9/10
Maury Ballstein (quite good but lack of mozzarella) 7/10
Club Sandwiches Not Seals (simple but boring) 5/10
Nobody Calls Me Chicken Salad (quite good, bit oily) 8/10
Free Willy 2 (amazing & so delicious) 10/10
Parmageddon (not bad) 6/10
Reubenstein (surprisingly yum, well blended flavours) 10/10 (not sure about the latest addition of cheese!! It was already perfect.)
Home Alone (disappointing, lots of burnt stuff) 4/10
The Wiggum (really good) 8/10
Egg mcmartinez (really good sub for McMuffin) 9/10
Foghorn legless (lots of different texture) 7/10
Temple of the doom (interesting flavours especially the hot jalapeños that gives u a big kick) 7/10
The Mensche (exact replica of a salmon cream cheese bagel but salmon is rather sweet) 7/10

All the pie pastries are light and crispy:
Steak pie (very meaty with good balance of black pepper seasonings, filling for a meal) 9/10
Garden veg pie (nice creamy sauce with some veggies but nothing special) 7/10
Spanish chicken pie (interesting red sauce with chunky gluten chicken) 7/10
Lentil and mushroom pie (lots of lentils and not much flavour) 6/10
Sausage roll (walnuts with other ingredients mashed up, very filling for a meal) 8/10

Black sesame matcha cookie (best dessert) 10/10
Double choc cookie (good but quite sweet) 8/10
Choc cake (light, spongy & huge) 7/10
Choc chip cookie (good but quite sweet) 8/10
Choc brownie (moist & yum) 9/10
Pumpkin pie (soft, flavorsome & only slightly sweet 8/10
Ferreror rocher custard (weird with strong choc flavour) 6/10
Salty oats choc cookie (subtle hint of salt, nice and chewy) 8/10
Almond croissant (very dense, enough for a meal, surprisingly good and only a little sweet) 9/10

European hot choc with hazelnut (piping hot with lots of chopped hazelnuts, thick & delicious) 9/10

Shannon’s garlic prawns (awesome with strong garlic flavor) 9/10

Will update again once I try the rest so watch this space.

Those sammiges. My partner is the biggest foodie I know and he could not get enough and even ordered two to take on the plane home with him. I love the pies, steak and bacon! Yum! They have a lot to offer. I do wish they had sitting areas but there isn't a lot of room.

The first thing I'd like to say is that all the girls who I interacted with were very pleasant. I know it's a cliche for the area for hospitality workers to be arrogant or snooty but it's always nice to be surprised by friendly people. I anticipated annoyance when my dining companion and I were still a little bit umming and ahhing when we got to the front of the queue but not even close. Friendly smile and helpful. I ordered the home alone (left over Christmas turkey sandwich), the cheesy mite scroll and brownie. My fellow diner got the blt with avocado, a brownie, soy latte and a pasta salad. The serving sizes were good. If possible I may go for a different bread the next time if I get a sandwich as the turkey roll bread was white, toasted and crunchy. I've always been a softer bread kinda gal, ie microwaved left over pizza > pan fried all day errday so maybe just sandwich bread for me next time. I'd definitely try something else the next time I go, potentially more vegetable based over mock meat. The Brussel sprouts in the sandwich weren't what I was expecting either, I was expecting chunks and these were more like a leak. Quite salty possibly from the gravy. Actually probably only ordered this sandwich as it brings about feelings of nostalgia from Christmas dinners minus the cruelty. I thought the cheesy mite scroll was good but I wasn't 100% certain it was vegemite but perhaps another kind of brown salty spread. Perhaps this was because it was mixed with the cheese. The brownie was great and like none I'd tried before as it had soft gooey cherries in it. I don't remember how much it was as I had accidentally left this post in drafts for some time, but possibly around $28. Must remember that eating out can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be! I am a sucker for vegan eats though and always end up ordering too much.

Smith and Deli have the best sandwiches so good even non vegan people will think of becoming vegan. Smith and deli have a great selection of sandwiches as well as deli foods and vegan products.
Joan H
Amazing New York style deli with incredible food and great atmosphere. Meats and cheeses were absolutely phenomenal and wares for sale are very reminiscent of a traditional deli. Pictured is the Rubenstein sandwich, gorgeous toasted bread with spot on flavors. Can't rate highly enough.
Vegan Coeliac Warriorprincess
There aren't enough good things to say about this place. Tucked away on Moore street in Fitzroy they've taken sandwiches to a whole new level! Especially for the gf diner. I will say that there are only a few gf options but the staff are wonderfully helpful and would accommodate requests (except they're ALWAYS busy and I felt bad for the line out the door so I just stick to what's already available).
The wiggum is a vegan gf delight and I've literally never had a better lunch meal. Add an almond mylk hot chocolate and my day was made. There weren't any gf desserts on offer though the vegan ones looked amazing. Their stock of gf and vegan goods is also worth a mention. I'll be going back till my buttons pop!

I don't like sandwiches.
Usually they are bland and taste like bread and make me sad.
The opposite is said of the sandwich I ate today at smith and deli. :)
I got the Reubenstein. This. Is. A. Great. Sandwich.
It had all the pickles and sauerkraut-y goodness I could ever need. The sauce was fantastic. I don't know what it was but it was mellow and buttery without the butter! I feared that the pastrami was going to taste odd, like many faux meats do. Fear not. It had a perfect texture and enough herbs to compliment this sandwich with 0 funny aftertaste.
I now know what all the fuss is about with this place. It really makes the vegan soul smile with the strength of a thousand rainbows.
(I had a coconut milk chai as well, but the only reason I'm going back is for that sandwich... Mmmm)
Kim
Pretty decent place! Meatball sub was tasty, bread was crispy and the "meatballs" themselves had heaps of flavour and was nice looking around the place for vegan stuff to buy.
Experiencejoysoflife
I think I may have chosen wrong.
I got told this place was vegan paradise. However, what I received was far from it.
The 'Snitzel' roll was very average, all I tasted was tomato paste and old bread. No care went into making the sand which, which is visible in the uploaded photo.

The donut flavour was odd, not to sure what flavour it was. I will give credit where it's due. The donut even though the flavour was odd, was light and moist. Also the service was great, a friendly girl with blue hair was bubbly and she made me feel so welcome.

Overall, I may be back with a friend in the future. Although I personally prefer other vegan bakeries around.
Spirited Stardust
I'm all for supporting vegan shizznit. So I have been here multiple times. But to be honest it can be a little hit and miss for me, but despite that I keep coming back
Green Gourmet Giraffe
An amazing sandwich bar with so many sandwiches that every visit finds me cursing the tyranny of choice and thanking my lucky stars to have a place like this over my side of the city. The sandwiches and the rest of the food are too expensive to be everyday (about $15 a sandwich) but are of such great quality that I don't resent paying a little more. I am more concerned about finding my next opportunity to visit and what sandwich to try next.
Rhys Bennett
After many years of living in Melbourne I finally found time to visit Smith and Deli, and what can I tell you, it lives up to the hype.

The atmosphere is a heavy bustle of hungry and happy patrons perusing the many vegan friendly products throughout the Deli as they wait for their hand crafted sandwich to be handed over the counter.

Service is pleasant and fast and the food is humble and delicious. The selection of foods are not compromised by mere imitation of carnivorous favourites but are actually free to venture into flavours unexplored by a more traditional sandwich bar.

My only gripe would be the menu itself is too expansive to work through over an expected Australian lifespan... too many great choices!
Athina Jeffs
Best vegan sandwiches ever - so much selection it's hard to pick just one favourite - lately it's the Home Alone or the Friend Zone (cos who doesn't love a good ham tomato and cheese toastie!) - so good!
Adam Kim
Proof that health food doesn't need to be boring. I didn't like vegan concept because of that boring flavor. I can feel their efforts. Thanks.
Kaila.d.ford
My boyfriend and I are newly vegan and really still in the process of cutting animal based products out of our life completely. We decided to try Smith & Deli out after hearing amazing things. I figured it would be hard to please my boyfriend, who doesn't mind vegan alternative 'meats' but every time still says the same thing "It was nice but I wouldn't have it again".
Anyway, he ordered the Parmageddon and I ordered The Better Bundy and what a surprise it was! I was expecting to enjoy it but not as much as I did! The 'bacon' on my sandwich legitimately tasted like bacon and I would go as far as to say some meat eaters would not even know the difference! My boyfriend raved about his sandwich, saying that the 'chicken' tasted like chicken. We also had a cinnamon donut and a vanilla slice, both of which were amazing also.
The wait was a little long, probably around 10 minutes after ordering and that was after waiting in line to order for around 5 minutes but we got there right on lunch time so we expected the lunch rush.
All in all it the food was beyond what either of us expected, we will definitely make the trip there for lunch again soon and are now very eager to try out Smith & Daughters!
Yvesi
There's a fantastic and extensive selection of yummy vegan sandwiches waiting for you at Smith and Deli. I love the concept of this store, selling a great range of vegan produce to bring home alongside very tasty vegan takeaway sandwiches. We tried the Little Havana and the Home Alone. Both were delicious and moreish. Also had the soy decaf latte here - absolutely excellent. And to top it off the staff are lovely.
Bianca Roberts
Brilliant place! Can hardly believe the delicious morsels this place provides are all vegan; the cakes are just as decadent as the originals with zero guilt attached. Also they stock a variety of dairy free drinks (like the pictured rebels kitchen mylk) as well as vegan groceries. Service is incredibly warm and friendly and I cannot wait to return to try their savory goods!
Spudsmcduck
Seriously good vegan fare. I had the Wiggum sandwich (bbq tofu) and my meat-eating partner had the Maury Ballstein (meatball sub), even he liked it! The meatballs really did taste like meat. We also had coffees and a couple of pastries, I definitely recommend the almond croissant, so delicious! Love this place for a super easy vegan lunch, will definitely be coming back. Thanks guys!
Berryniceindeed
I'm at Smith & Deli most Saturday mornings :D Usually getting the Egg McMartinez or a club sandwich, plus whatever sweets take my fancy. Also a great range of veg staples like Gardein from the freezer section. Now I'm hungry thinking about it!
Alex
This food is seriously next level. Nothing short of amazing. Admittedly the iced coffee (in my opinion) was pretty awful... very watery with coconut milk to the point where I had to use it to water the park lawns with. Luckily everything else was seriously great so the deli definitely redeemed itself.

Quick warning to ethical vegans: the bacon is very bacon-y. I had to pass off one of my sandwiches to my partner because I was beginning to feel uncomfortable with the resemblance to the point of nausea. He loved it though and I got his sandwich so everything worked out quite well ;)
Ran Zheng
To tell the truth, sandwich is not really my thing. However I really want to try the 4.9 rate one so I went there. The sandwich was fresh and I can't say it really nice one! I do love the soy coffee here!
Gazeats
Does not get any better for vegan lunch.. Really using some delicious combos in their sandwiches.. Melbourne needs more of these.. Get in my belly!!
LAC
Wow!!
Came here on the weekend not really knowing what to expect. And I was super impressed!! I love a good sandwich, these sandwiches were great. Would highly recommend this place. Can't wait to come here again :)
Manlovesfood
For a recently turned vegan i never thought id be able to experience an ny deli style rueben again..oh how i was wrong. I first had my doubts as to how similar the reubenstein sandwich would taste to a 'real' reuben. But once i bit into this glorious sandwich i was in disbelief.. such a great tasting sandwich and it brought me back to when i was in nyc with that distinct taste. Smith and deli you are awesome! Cant wait to come back. P.S My girlfriend loved her meatball sub too
Daniel Cinerari
Disappointing experience overall. Ordered 2 coffees, 2 pies and a sausage roll, were told it would be a 10 minute wait as the ones we wanted were in the oven. 10 minutes is fair. A steep price of $26... better be good. Decent coffee. At least 25-30 minutes later I was told it would be another 5. That's a joke. Asked to have what ever the ones were in the pie warmer instead. After the long drive out, with a baby and the result being food that wasn't eaten because it tasted so average. I wish had of gone to one of the many other options in Fitzroy for a vegan feed. Waste of time and money.
Alicia Fox
I've been here twice and it was fantastic both times. I can't wait to come back and try something different. My meat eating boyfriend loved it too, didn't even realise that it was vegan.
Honeylishuss
The food at Smith & deli is just plain freaking incredible. Last week my husband picked up a lunch pack of an "egg" sandwich, a mini donut and potato salad: $15.00. Just brilliant. How they get the lemon meringue tart to taste so good without any actual egg is beyond me. If that's all they managed that would be pretty damn cool but the pastry is also super short and the lemon curd is perfectly balanced. I had a donut with "cream" or was it "custard" the other day and only got as far as one bite before i had to turn around and buy up the rest but they had all gone!!!!! How do they do it? I don't freaking know but a whole lot of love and a whole lot of unwavering work ethic and a whole lot of adherence to quality might have something to do with it. I truly love you girls. You make Melbourne worth living in.
Tyrone Biggums
Totally average sandwiches which are overpriced. Not sure why vegans cream themselves over this place-------the food at Vegie Bar is better.

The store is hot and small and there are no tables, but that's not the fuckin point of this place now is it?
You buy your food and walk to the park on Nicholson and eat your sandwich on a joyous cloud of vegan, cruelty-free self-satisfaction.
The Home Alone is a Thanksgiving feast on a roll and may be the best goddamn sandwich I've had in my life. Go get one in your life.

AMAZING! The service is so friendly and the entire atmosphere is so eclectic! Was a bit disappointed that there was no where to sit if you wanted to quickly eat your lunch - even just a park bench would be good! - but nonetheless the food was incredible. Heart it!

Love this place! Amazing variety but consider yourself lucky if you get to devour their delicious donuts and sweets. Yet to try any sandwiches but looks so good! Pretty pricey but that's a given for vegan food. Great business with really friendly staff! Came in close to closing time and saw earlier that day that they had mozzarella. Asked if it was available and it wasn't but the girls went out back and cut me up some in a container! (Even personalised the cutting of it to suit my salad!)
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Smith & Daughters took the vegan dining scene by storm, being incredibly popular by both vegans and non-vegans alike. Shannon Martinez and Mo Wyse opened up Smith & Deli a block away to cater more for the day-time crowd. There are ready-to-go meals like salads, pizza, lasagne and pies, and vegan sweets that are sitting temptingly next to the coffee counter. Its impressive selection of sandwiches are made to order and use a variety of wheat gluten and tempeh based mock meats. There are breakfast-type sandwiches which are avaiable all day, and even vegan croissants. It also doubles as a deli (hence the name), providing cans and packets of all sorts of treats and snacks, nuts, drinks in the fridge, fresh bread, and a small selection of house-made products.

After hearing all the hype about this place and being vegan myself I decided to take a non vegan person there to experience some of the yummy sweets that I keep hearing so much of. There were very few people waiting to be served so after informing one of the many staff that work there that we were next, we proceeded to order what looked like some super delicious donuts, and our coffee order. After the gentleman came back from the counter to grab the donuts, the lady serving the person behind us quickly snapped up the last two donuts to which we said, we have already ordered those two. She gave a look as if to say "too bad" and said to order something else. We both stood there in total confusion for another couple of minutes to then be told "would you still like the coffees" Having assumed they would have started making the coffee we simply said, no thanks we will leave it. Regardless of how popular this place is made out to be, nothing beats good old fashioned customer service and as good as their food is, We will not be going back to visit them.

Such a happy place for vegans of Melbourne! Love it all. Cheeses, vanilla slice, cookies, great coffee, chocolate...need to try some more savoury delights on my next visit.

I'm calling it - THE best vegan food in Melbourne. Communal seating, alternative artworks, electrifying tunes, gracious service and off-beat menu choices. They've recently opened a sister deli and the dynamism of the founding duo is nothing short of inspiring.

I'm an omnivore with a vegan partner, so Smith and Deli was well-anticipated in our household. We are always looking for places where we can both go and enjoy food, where the vegan "option" isn't a boring afterthought.

I love this place because my partner can literally enjoy EVERYTHING on the menu, and I am always impressed by the quality of what they make. I love the Truffle Shuffle sandwich, and the Egg McMartinez is so very "I can't believe it doesn't contain animal products".

They have an outstanding selection of take-home foods as well — I highly recommend the tuna bake and the scalloped potatoes.

Probably what's most impressive is how well they manage the crowds when it inevitably gets packed every weekend. The staff are always so friendly, and make every customer feel like they matter. You aren't rushed or hurried, and it feels very personal. Well done to the Smith & Deli team! :D

Whenever I blog about a new vegan place, I get quite a few comments from readers overseas saying how Melbourne seems to be so ace for vegans and plant based eaters. Well, Melbourne now has yet another fantastically super all-vegan food outlet I’m excited to share with you: Smith & Deli in Fitzroy.

Shannon Martinez and Mo Wyse (the women behind Smith & Daughters) have broadened their footprints to location number two. . Eschewing dine-in searing, Smith & Deli will focus on take away food, provisions, fresh produce and home-cooked meals in a deli format. The deli offers everything from ingredients to create a meal to pre-prepared components of meals.

Smith & Deli is modelled after its mothership, Smith & Daughters. However, instead of being a dine-in affair, the Deli is focused on take-away food, fresh produce and home-cooked meals. Despite the presence of very meaty ingredients in the shop (think: pastrami, meat pies, chicken and cheeses) be assured that everything has been made from plants... and I mean everything. If I had to sum up the food at Smith & Deli it would be "I can't believe that's not meat!".

So hard to choose from such a big and yummy sound menu. Ended up getting The Mensch, which I enjoyed a lot. Great 'cream cheese' and an interesting approach to faux smoked salmon. Personally, would ask for bagel to not be toasted next time. Was still so delicious. Staff were very friendly and the service was speedy.

AMAZING! It was so hard to pick what I wanted.......ended up with the most incredible brownie I have ever tasted and an equally amazing donut! Absolutely lovely and super friendly staff, always smiling and always more than willing to help you out and have a chat. Can't wait until I return again!
The Plate Project
Got an all vegan Reubenstein in my hot little hands:
Pastrami, Sauerkraut, Pickles and Russian Dressing on Rye Bread 🌱🍃
Theres no meat or dairy products used, just some funky voodoo spells and quality products, mostly sourced from local suppliers and growers..
🙌🏽

Unfortunately for me, not as many gluten free options as one would've hoped but gosh the atmosphere here is awesome. It feels like you've walked straight into Brooklyn, the concept feels right, the building feels right and the staff are all super fitting. It's funny to walk down the surrounding side streets after grabbing your sandwich and see all the hungry vegans sitting on steps and park benches chowing down.
Believeinyourself
It's hard to believe that the menu item are all plant based, with their turkey bacon sandwiches, ham and cheese, beef goulashes, and chicken salads, but this sister deli of Smith & Daughters show the best of vegan food cooking. Keep in mind that even though closing hours are 7pm, we went at 5 and was told that they are no longer serving any menu items, and instead it was just take away items, or the pastries and salads they had left until closing. The take away goulash and chicken salad was still delicious, no wonder there's a line outside!

Wow wow wow! So amazing. Well worth waiting in line for an hour. I couldn't decide what to have, was advised by the bubbly staff member to try the souvlaki which was the days special. Best. Vegan. Meal. Ever. Lamb Souvlaki was the one thing that held me back from going vegetarian, knowing that this is possible makes me believe animal products are entirely unnecessary.
Thank you
Laura
Oh wow!! No wonder there's a line going out the door - absolutely worth it! I've had the Truffle Shuffle, Egg Martinez and Home Alone sandwich. All were amazing!

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. What an amazing place so much choice and variety. Had the Egg McMartinez and Truffle Shuffle for breakfast- both were spot on. For lunch Maury Ballstein and Home Alone again both spot on. Home Alone was definitely the favourite because it was so unique and tasty. Also got a scroll to take away but found it to be a bit crumbly. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff, highly recommend.

Pros: Amazing vegan food, great fresh sandwiches etc. Pies, pastries, lollies, pre-made meals all available. Most things are very fairly priced.

Con's: Deli sandwiches are somewhat overpriced ($12-18 each)
S Anderson
It is overpriced for both the sandwiches (small) and the pre-packaged items they sell.
The different cakes, slices and baked goods we tried have always been very dry and not that full of flavour. There are a lot better vegan / gluten free bakeries around if you're looking for sweet items.
The sandwich fillings are above average, the mock meat is always good, but they take a long time to be made especially since there always seems to be a lot of staff buzzing around. Lots of choices though.
It's a nice atmosphere and well presented, with generally friendly staff. There are interesting items to buy, not the biggest range though.

Well let's just say the atmosphere here is awesome the staff fantastic and the menu looks incredible. The truffle cheese Toastie I had today was seriously tasty and i can't wait to come back for the more meaty #vegan treats this place has to offer. And the cakes/slices, looked seriously incredible. Love it!
MEL: HOT OR NOT
The owners of popular vegan restaurant Smith & Daughters in Fitzroy have now branched out to a delightful Jewish-inspired deli just around the corner on Moor Street. Dubbed Smith & Deli, the new-age convenience store will be a haven for vegans, vegetarians and curious omnivores. Smith & Deli is housed in an old brick factory and I love the retro feel to the place, from the mint-green furnishings thanks to Callum Preston (who also designed Smith & Daughters) to the 50s rock tunes.

I left Smith and Deli feeling happy, content and pretty excited. I was blown away with the flavour and the taste of my food. We ordered the Rubenstein and club sandwich and they were both amazing. My husband who eats meat kept asking if I was sure that it was vegan because it really tasted like pastrami, bacon and turkey. The mayonnaise and cheese were good too! We also had the sour cherry tart which was also unbelievable - and so buttery. I am still on a bit of a high really and if I could come here everyday for lunch then I probably would. The staff here are similar to Smith and Daughters: fun, excited and willing to please. Thanks guys, you really are amazing :)The wait wasn't too bad - it was around 12 on a Saturday and probably had to wait 20 mins in line for a made to order sandwich.
Goodhearted
Smith & Deli is an all vegan, New York style deli bought to life by our friends from Smith & Daughters. This is the place to stop by for bread, pastries, coffee, cheeses, meats (all vegan remember!), salads, soups, pies, meals to go and an incredible array of over 25 sandwiches.

I was very excited about this deli!! We arrived just after 12pm on saturday a few days after it opened. There was a line just out the door but by the time we left the line was around the building so I'm glad we got there when we did. We shared the reubenstein and little havana sandwiches. I also got an almond milk latte which was a bit sweet for my liking and a brownie. The brownie was rich and fudggy and chewy - everything a brownie should be!! The sandwiches were good but next time I would try something else - they didn't wow me and little havana had a funny flavour which I didn't particularly like. I'll definitely be back to try some other items on the menu - maury ballstein and the egg mcmartinez!!

Smith & Deli is finally here. It has been worth the wait. I didn’t think it was possible to love something more than Smith & Daughters, but I do. I turned up at 8.15 am on the opening day thinking I might be able to dash in and grab something for breakfast. An Egg McMartinez perhaps? The place was buzzing, with a queue snaking its way to the door. I had to leave to do some volunteering so I headed out again, postponing my visit until 1.30pm.

Great food, great vibe & great staff. Thank you for existing Smith & Deli. Showcasing how you don't need animal products to make damn delicious food.

I am not vegan but I can absolutely appreciate the awesomeness of this place and the good quality food. The Rubenstein was awesome- I can totally see how carnivores and vegans alike can eat this food side by side and both feel like it is missing nothing! Great vibe too.
I have been here a number of times in Smith & Deli's first week. It's been a hungry week, so I've had a croissant, passionfruit tart, vanilla slice, doughnut, custard danish, pain au chocolate, sausage roll, pastrami sandwich, truffle toastie, salad sandwich, smoked split pea soup, a block of cheddar cheese, several coffees and some fresh produce.
Every single thing I have eaten has been outstanding. Really, Outstanding. I don't know how they pull off the taste sensations let alone the authentic textures but all I can say is, more please.
Cool under pressure staff, good tunes, splendid fitout, delicious food and great work at the coffee machine. Nice work.
Table To Paper
Brimming with character, the pair’s passion in creating a beautifully curated plant and provisions store is evident from the moment you step into the deli. Every little corner of the space is stocked with something ready for customers to take home – from a range of traditional Jewish deli foods, salads to pre-cooked meals and pastas. And yes, they do coffee too.

The team behind vegan restaurant Smith & Daughters is opening a New York-style deli, complete with home-style Jewish cuisine, fresh fruit and veg grocer, takeaway coffee and sandwiches. Following the success of Fitzroy strictly vegan restaurant Smith & Daughters, Mo Wyse and Shannon Martinez are now opening a deli nearby to not only expand the range of food they offer, but also grow their production kitchen.
