Review The Standard Hotel - Fitzroy

6☆ parma, really could have come with hand cut chips though, according to caine. Cheese burger was also 10/9 it was filling , flavoursome & fresh. Beers, old school pissa. Everything nostalgic about this place. I just love it. Open beer garden with and impressive 137 seats available. Bar staff we great to talk with, friend and funny. If you have a local somewhere else, come here and make this ya local.... Nick is a legend. 🤙

Hi just reaching out to tell you guys that you have completely ruined my life. I visited your establishment the other day just looking to wet my whistle (that means enjoy a drink) but was very upset when I realised my innocent trip to the pub would leave me feeling empty for the rest of my life. Why? Because I saw the most beautiful girl working there. There are plenty of beautiful girls and guys in the world and that’s great. But to see someone so beautifully crafted by the gods isn’t a good thing. It’s completely messed with my head. She was a kind of short girl with blond hair and black skirt. From this point onwards my notion of beauty has been changed and I don’t even know if I can be happy seeing another girl knowing that angels do walk among us. Why does an angel even need to work? Most people work to put food on the table and put a roof over their heads. Angels don’t even need to eat and they sleep in heaven floating on clouds so what is the point in her even having a job? Anyway good service and nice beer garden. Thanks for your hospitality

Food was good and the pub has a nice atmosphere both inside and out. I can't give a higher rating because we were in a big group and two of the meals didn't arrive. Three reminders later we finally got them.

Looked like a busy Saturday night and food came out prompt and was excellent! Beer garden was amazing and excellent atmosphere. Staff friendly and professional. One of the best pubs in Melbourne

A few vegan options on the menu. The cheeseless vegan eggplant parma was really delicious. Nice place with large outdoor seating area.

Mother's Day pub lunch with the fam. Great pub that's not massive but also not tiny. I'm not a drinker but fam said beers on tap were decent. Food was fantastic, a southern chicken burger for me and my partner had three cheese tortellini, both wonderful. Good atmosphere. Not the cheapest but which pub is these days!

This is a great pub. Good pub menu, with weekly specials; awesome large beer garden and front bar has great old fashioned pub atmosphere. Staff are fantastic, great friendly service- hard to beat

Incredibly disappointing experience. It’s not like me to leave a bad review but this was hard to ignore. Our food took 45 minutes to come after the first meal was provided to the table. Not one server provided an update on the wait time on our food. The meal that was served early had to be re-microwaved because it was stone cold. No apologies were offered throughout the entire experience even though we were being patient the entire time. Disappointing as I love going to all the pubs in the area.

Called in here for a drink. The service from the blond woman bar was ok.

We sat in the cosy beer garden was good, with some overhead heaters to keep us warm.

My partner had a Young Henry's Motor Oil beer and I had a Moo Brew Dark Ale.

Both beers were dark ales and similar in taste but my Moo Brew tasted more watery.

The pub was packed and it was difficult to get a seat inside so we decided to move on and get some food elsewhere.

Overall this place was alright and I'd happily go back.

Went here for a Friday office lunch & was pleasantly surprised with the food! It was delish. I got a steak and my colleagues got Parmas and cauliflower bites. Staff was friendly, beer was good and the food was terrific .

The only downside was the wait. We had to wait for almost 45 mins to an hour to get our food which is a bit too long for a work lunch but after we ate our food, it was definitely worth the wait!
A Regular Bloke
I had been to a few work lunches at The Standard and the meals were always good quality and value. One thing that has has always impressed me is that even for large tables the meals all came out together.

With my sister down for Brisbane for the weekend we thought we'd try them out on a busy Saturday night and we were not disappointed. Despite the venue being busy and chaotic - and two of the four people having specific dietary requirements - the orders were right, served together and the food was delicious.

We come to The Standard Hotel every week with work. We love this place. So many amazing things in that bar that they have collected over the years. It's so cozy and cool. Staff are awesome. And there's always so many legendary locals that come here. I often have a wine and dont leave! Thee best Parmas in town. Hands down. The Scotch fillet is beautiful melt in your mouth material. They actually do great steaks here. I love the goat curry they have on the specials too. Delicious. They may have a new chef though? The special have been very bland lately. And the roo sauce has become slightly watery? And the chips have changed!!! Could be just a funny patch, so maybe just order the Parma every time. Win win!
KnowingMelbourne
These guys make one of the best chicken parmas in Melbourne! Topped with prosciutto (instead of standard ham), delicious cheese, tomato sugo and basil it just lifts the traditional pub Parma to another level. I highly recommend. I love their beer garden too! Check it out.

Great hang out for a beer and a meal. Food is very well cooked and portions are very generous. Staff is very friendly and attentive. There’s a nice outdoor area which is beautiful in summer and a lovely indoor dining area which is perfect for a dinner with friends during our cold winter nights.
Northcote20
We had some slight miss communication issue with our order (wanting to share a Parma) but they handled it so well, and served us with two seperate plates and portions of parmas.
Would recommend this place to anyone, we come here often and have never had any issues. Amazing staff and amazing food. 10/10 guys ❤️❤️

an old favourite with a great beer garden, first rate staff and a decent menu of pub food as it should be in 2018. good selection of usual fare prepared just but bit better than most. Saturday afternoons in the beer garden the perfect inner city setting. Chicken burger a winner and with a choice of decent beers, if you're Fitzroy bound, this is the best old fashioned pub with modern food/beer in the land.

The Standard Hotel has been a favourite hangout space with our colleagues, every time we visit Melbourne. In fact my fondest memory is my first (& only) experiences in trying kangaroo meat. More so it’s had become a tradition that any newbie from our office visiting Standard Hotel for the first time we order the Kangaroo steak on their behalf & offer then (except when they are Vegetarian).

But apart from that, the food & drinks here are amazing, thought it’s the typical pub fare. Apart from the appetisers, the mains are pretty good as well. A must visit if you are near Fitzroy and in need of some good food & wonderful beer, served in a rustic ambiance.
Tomlovestoeat
I love this bar, they've got Guinness for the love of god!! Food is great too. The beer garden/courtyard at the back is awesome, can't wait til summer to frequent 👍
Sugar_licks
This is an excellent pub, cool friendly staff epic meals that are presented well, huge portions for a fair price great drinks selection- sitting by the fireplace enjoying a soggy Melbourne afternoon made for time well spent

Bloat score: Four – If I were lying prostrate on my tummy, it would have looked as though I was levitating. We found ourselves at the quaint, wood-panelled Standard Hotel on a Saturday night, celebrating the birthday of one of our good friends. As opposed to people who pre-drink before a party and then promptly forgo dinner because ‘eating is cheating’, my motto is to get to any birthday drinks early enough so that the prospect of food is still on the table.

This pub has always given me a Fratelli's hiding out "what's it doin' open in the fall?" abandoned feeling because I've never seen anyone entering or exiting. But as I have discovered it is fully functional and full of beer. Not so thrilled about the food though.
Clare
Went here on a Friday night and it was fairly busy. Looks quite popular with locals. We managed to grab a seat right by the bar. There may have been another spot outside but we weren't keen on being in the beer garden. Ordered our food which did take quite a while to come out and had to follow up but they were great about it and said we were up next - which we were. Ordered a Parma. There was a bit too much sauce for my liking. But nothing obnoxious. Heaps of chips and the token side salad - so everything you'd expect for a Parma.
Zomatoaddict
Although they don't have a good variety in craft beer I like to go there once a while and sit in the beer garden 😊 it's a nice and old environment which is relaxing to me, if only people don't smoke in the courtyard !

It’s no secret that I love a good backstreets pub, and Fitzroy’s Standard Hotel might be the quintessential example (you might even say it sets the standard. Badum tshh). Surrounded by a myriad of one-way streets that always seem to be driving away from the pub, it took a fair bit of focus on Google maps to find the Standard, but once I laid my eyes on it I knew it was my kind of pub.
The City Lane
The Standard Hotel is located in the backstreets of Fitzroy and is one of those hidden gems that’s survived doing what they’ve done best since 1865 – serving great beer and tasty pub food in a welcoming, cozy space.
Alice Seki
Bring back the old chef! Miss the kangaroo that used to be on the menu! I can't tell you how the other food is but the new kangaroo is so bad and served with a boiled sweet potato no flavour throughout it all
Hayley Flynn
Look tbh with you the burger alone would've been satisfying enough but me and a ma7 went halves so I also got to try the steak sandwich. A true star. Dripping with meat juice and aoili 👌. Whatever they're doing with the chippys is perfection. My only gripe was with the chicken burger which I didn't order. Why does it come grilled?
First visit on a Tuesday evening by chance and couldn't have been happier. Great beers, good wines and good pub food. Not fancy but tasty and good portions. Lovely vibe and friendly staff.
Peta
I've been coming here for years and really love the atmosphere of this pub, but sadly the food always seems to be, well, totally standard. Bit of a let down in that department.
Bronimal
One of the best pubs in Melbourne. Jovial staff, cheap quality booze, good food, pleasant patrons. My only objection? 11PM CLOSING TIME ON A SATURDAY. Yo, Standard owners, are you not aware of how much money you'd make if you extended your hours of operation? Insanity! Get with the Fitzroy times!
Bob1972
The perfect back-street Fitzroy watering hole. Robert Wyatt on the stereo. Enough interesting beers on tap to keep everyone happy. Genuine. Friendly.
Steve J
Nice place. Equal first place for the best chicken parma this side of the city (or possibly in melbourne) that I've tried. Nice beer garden that can get pretty full on nice days. A little hidden, but actually really easy to get to. Well worth a visit!
Pete Firth
My prediction, as we waited for a decent amount of time for our food in half full pub, was that they were understaffed on Saturday during Easter, and as a result my Kangaroo would be overcooked. Nostroo_damus was correct, and it had been cooked longer than my first sentence. Tough, chewy and cardboard-like, is not a culinary adventure I enjoyed from this premium priced meal.
Th3.legend
Super unimpressed with my meal tonight - I ordered the veggie burger which used to be awesome. Firstly it was freezing cold, secondly the flavours were terribly bland. Lacked absolutely any flavour whatsoever and even a good dashing of salt and pepper didn't help. I couldn't even eat it so had to fill up on the awful shoe string fries offered on the side. It's a real shame as I love this place but the veggie burger was just a massive disappointment. Maybe they have changed chefs but they have really lost their game.
Louisa Koko
Food here isn't too bad. Nothing really wowed my friends and I though. Food was tasty, relatively fast service but customer service was lacking. Was even insulted by the man behind the bar. Hmmm.
Wonderfull
Best Eggplant Parma in town!! If anyone knows of a better (or equally as good) Parma then let me know! The Standard can do no wrong in my opinion, always a good time.
Accomplice Anna
Food normally is pretty good but ox cheek was so overdone - and a very long wait for food. Absolutely unacceptable to have no dessert or coffee on offer at 9.20pm! It was a packed house and surely the kitchen must wait until mains are finished??
SeraphimCoil
Came in for a meal tonight - fairly standard pub fare, along with a few "fancy" options.

Sat down at a table in the dining room as the bar had trivia night on, and waited on the meals we ordered. And waited. And waited. We were given a basket of bread and butter (which, to be fair, was delicious). And then we waited some more.

Finally, a touch over an hour after ordering, our meals arrived. The entrée of saganaki was incredible - well cooked, just crispy enough on the outside, with that amazing squeaky feeling from the haloumi that is the sign of a great plate.

The chicken parma that I ordered was... okay? Not bad, but far from outstanding. My girlfriend had the eggplant parma which was good, without being great, and the friend we were with had one of the specials - lamb wellington. This looked great and was, according to her, delicious.

Would I eat here again? Sure, if I wasn't in a rush, or as an option when in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.
Dan Da Man
Gross food, but a great pub.
Lady In Bread
Ye Olde Standard. Still as good as an old 'tie your horse at the post and go in for a cold one' pub can get. Brimming with regulars and locals that have been around the block and back, and still come to call this place home, The Standard is exactly the aforementioned, and above. The food is generous and tasty. The specials board doesn't change frequently enough for you to miss out on a favourite over a few weeks. The beer is cold and nothing too flash, lending many of the taps to local brews which is great. But if you do have the hankering thirst for the finer hops of sorts, a bunch stand chilly in the nearby bar fridge, waiting for you to rest your top lip on a few new flavours for that special occasion. Staff are relaxed and super friendly. There's no 'cool dude moustache' riff raff, just a bunch of legends keeping it as casual as mint sauce on a Sunday roast. Thus said, the bands on Sundays always draw a nice crowd, which in turn draw the curtains slowly down on the day and up on the smells of night and also, The Standard's famous Roo dish. That or their Parma Deluxe. Delightful. And as that sun goes down, you'll always feel at home, and eventually slip into bed early smiling, like it's christmas in the 80's. As they say. The simple things in life, are often the best.
Felicity.perovich
Best pub!. Came here last Sunday for lunch and honestly couldn't fault the place. I had the Roo fillets and my friend had the Eggplant Parma. We both rated our meals a 9/10, I guess my only 'issue' was that the meal was so big! My Roo came on a bed of mash with a delicious rich port sauce and some greens on the side. I had seen reviews on here about people having to wait a while for their food but ours came out fine. They have a good selection of beers with your locals like Carlton and Coopers but then a fair few smaller craft breweries as well which was really nice to see. The service was excellent too, young staff who were relaxed but nice and professional. Will definitely be coming back and spending a long lazy afternoon in the beer garden.

Fabulous Fitzroy is bursting with interesting street art, bars, shops and restaurants. A stone’s throw from bustling Brunswick St is The Standard Hotel on Fitzroy St. It’s nothing fancy, but a loved-up old pub patronised by a loyal band of customers of all ages. You’ve got to love a local pub on a quiet residential street; well if you’re a Perthite you do, as this is a novelty for us. The inside of ye olde pub may look a bit ramshackle, but this also gives it charm. Step outside and there’s a modern beer garden that seems to go on forever.
Hide And Seek
The Standard is popular with locals for its no-fuss, high-quality menu of perennial pub favourites such as the Standard burger, steak sandwich, pepper-crusted kangaroo fillets and their mammoth chilli bean enchiladas. They produce the kind of comfort food that cures hangovers but also plays accomplice in developing one – a shrewd business model indeed. Located on a secluded street which runs parallel to busy Brunswick Street, this pub is a hidden gem. An extensive selection of booze is available from the takeaway bottle shop too. All pubs should be this good – perhaps that’s why it’s called the Standard.
Jess
...Amazing, crunchy, tasty, thick, just really nice, he said.

The Standard Hotel is in Fitzroy st, just off Brunswick st. It is a lovely old building which reminds me of a country pub. It has been open for a while now buut only eight other bloggers have talked about this place and its outstanding food and drink. I was intrigued by Eat and be merry's review in a sunny courtyard. It was here that I tried the $18 eggplant parma with chips and salad. It also came with bread and was a very huge plate. I didn't order any drinks as I was still on the 30 day water challenge but others did. The bread was sourdough and was very lovely even with the Western style butter (that one that I saw in My Kitchen Rules). The food was a little bit slow to come and everyone at my table was waiting for what seemed to be a while (more like 25 mins for it to come: eggplant parma, goats cheese tart and potatoes). All the meals were huge and some struggled to finish. Luckily I didn't have a lot to eat that day and went to the gym, so I was fine. The salad was a little bit of a letdown- it was bitter and very oniony. But the parma was all fine. The batter was great and the eggplant was gorgeous. The chips weren't even soggy and nicely salted. There was heaps of cheese and tomato sauce on there which was rich and very homely. Rating: 16/20- great parma. The only letdown was the service which was slow and some people did not smile one bit. But other than that it was all good.

The Standard Hotel has a relaxed pub atmosphere and delicious comfort food especially on a cold Melbourne evening (mugsie thought it was one of the warmer Melbourne evenings but burger boy & I sure felt the chill being the spoilt Perthies we are).

We forgot to take meat out for dinner and Az and Sarah were at the Standard so we thought we'd join them for a meal and a drink. I like the Standard. The inside is very cosy with an accessible bar, and the heated beer garden has a tranquil zen quality to

Eat And Be Merry Crew
The Standard is a nice little pub with a great courtyard in the heart of Fitzroy. It has a very laid back and eclectic feel. Hipsters, parents with bubs, and self confessed dorks like myself alike can mingle and chill in both their outdoor and indoor hangout spaces. It also has a stage area for the live band. We were there on a Sunday afternoon which I believe is band day but maybe our timing was a bit off for there was not sign of said band. The Standard also serves the *ahem* standard pub fare however we were there around 4pm which wasn't really meal time so we did not order anything to eat. Perhaps next time... The Verdict: We liked it. Overall The Standard is a great go-to venue which has plenty of room for crowds of friends. It's welcoming and non pretentious and has plenty of outdoor shaded area for lazy afternoons.
Andrew Turner
I had the veggie burger from the specials menu, which had a sweet potato and pumpkin 'patty', eggplant, salad, tomato and cheese in an impressively tall white bun, and was served with chips.
Michael
Great place but..... I love The Standard, but admit I haven't been for a while (make that about 6 years). I went to a friend's birthday on Saturday, and was disappointed that it now seems to be infested with drunken ferals (read: cashed up young bogans). Now I understand that it isn't nice to have to serve types like that, but for goodness sakes, don't take it out on me. The attractive tall irish (I think) bar girl has a serious attitude problem - I was sneered at the whole time, and I got the impression she was like that to everyone else.

Management: Please address this issue, as it will have a serious impact on your business.

Feliz Navi-DON'T!. Come for the Lunch, stay for the bread that you might get instead of your meals!
Waited a shade over 1 1/2 hours before bailing.
Went here Christmas Eve for Lunch
It was busy, but no communication about wait times from the staff. Really disappointing.
Some tables were brought bread baskets to keep them around, other tables (mine) were not.

The Pub who stole Christmas (eve lunch).. Went to the Standard for a Christmas Eve Lunch with work colleagues and waited for a hour and a half to receive our order. Didn't receive it in the end, resulting in us collecting a refund and leaving. The wait would not have been so bad if there was some communication - apparently a chef had not come in and they were down to one. This was not communicated until we complained and asked for a refund. The table next to us had about 20 people on it and they had been there for half an hour longer than us and had pre-ordered their menu by email a few days before. Probably the worst example of customer service and managing customer expectations that I have experienced. If they had made an effort to let people know then their patrons could make a choice, and would probably been more sympathetic. Considering all the great places that we have in the Fitzroy area, of which The Standard used to be one, my work colleagues and I will not be going there again. Its a shame because we have had good experiences in the past!
Joshbones92
Best pub in Fitzroy. The Standard delivers on everything... great food, extensive beer and wine lists, friendly staff, and a fantastic ambience. Try the Snitty
C_desmond
Great joint. What an epic beer garden. This place gets pretty choccas on a Friday after work and the bar is pretty small, which means it can take a while to get a drink, but I guess that's what you get for going out at peak times! Staff were lovely, particularly the ocker bloke named Stan I think, what a legend made us feel right at home. Food was good classic pub fare and servings were decent, great for chilled hangout and beers with the boys!
Crh
Too Cool.. Disgraceful reverse-snobbery from the staff. Learn some manners and appreciate enthusiastic customers. Never bothering again, and this i'm sure will sit just fine with The Standard.
Tmwea
Rude staff. Cant beleive how rude one staff member was who told us to leave as one of our friends "got his tackle out" in an attempt to clear our table after we had ordered dinner and a couple of beers, the gentleman who apparently got his tackle out is a father of two and was driving. Never seen anything like that before warning to other pub goers of the bipolar schizophrenic bar staff.
Marshar
Steakarama !. A top-shelf porterhouse at the Standard. I've paid much more for an inferior steak at pretentious "steak houses". Apparently they have a brand new grill. It seems to be working wonders. Well done to the kitchen staff!

The whole place has a fantastic vibe...love it there.
Bruhaus_moore
Best Steak. Had dinner there last night and the steak was the best I've had in a long time. Perfectly cooked medium and char-grilled to perfection. I will definitely be back.
Alex Hill
The Parmas here are always consistently superb.
Nicole Miller
Sunday catch. Caught up with another coupke for pub meal. sat in beer garden as it was abnormally mild melb winter day. food was awesome n filling. value for money, not crowded, waited nit for entrees but great chilled out place. parking around is mainly 1hr or permit so watch u where u park.
Alex Angelico
Very solid parma. Location is alright.
Claire Holl
Great pub.. Great live music, and love the quiz nights. That guy from Carlton tennis club is not too bad at guinness drawings. I once ordered a coffee and he drew the Carlton Exhibition Centre in it, picture perfect. Mad skills.
Barley And Hops
Great beer garden. The beer garden is the stand out feature of this place. We had the parma and it was fine, the beers are lacking though. Only two decent beers on tap, one of them is a great beer the other nothing special. So the beer list could definitely use some work but great place for a drink regardless.
Fin Brennan
Another Good Fitzroy Pub. Sat at the Bar and had a few IPA's with a couple mates, had a nice chat to the Bartender, ate some chips and left.. Nice old school pub, Will be back next time I'm out that way...
Maddox88
Boring! Staff are try hard, middle age hipsters. Food was okay mixed with a little boring and bland, there a so many better options around Fitzroy. Staff are unhappy, middle age, rude, hipster types. Is it that hard to smile every once in a while? If you weren't so busy perfecting your tortured artist / I'm so above you all image and attitude, hell knows, you might be able to do your job! This place puts the 'b' in boring!
Snoozie
Been few times over the years; always have a good time.
Grace H
Solid. This is a place where you can feel comfortable, get a good feed and enjoy some beers with friends. Trivia nights are fun and the staff are always helpful.

Perhaps not a date spot, but really reliable and a good selection of beers.
Joeyjoejoejuniorshabadoo
Deeriffic. Decor tries a little hard to be Fitzroyish with all the antlers and crap, but this is a pretty cosy pub on a winters day when it's not too full. Heck, maybe it's all the deer motifs.
Good beer selection, decent food (I had the pulled pork burger which was perfectly decent, and the bits of sausage I stole off my partner weren't bad either), not too outrageously priced - all boxes were ticked.
Binky Williams
Eggplant Parma? BLAURGH.. Just a warning really. Eggplant Parma can be deeeeelicious if the eggplanty bit is properly cooked, but it's diabolical if it is still hard and a bit like the sole of a thong. So, vego's, approach with caution. These people know about being a pub (super duper pub!) but they don't know about EGGPLANTS (that's aubergines to you posh people).
Pam
Rude staff, closes VERY early, and the potato is oily. Also the burgers are over priced. Do not recommend.
Simone
Mixed feelings. Ive been here once before and had a great meal (Pork Cutlet) the staff were courteous and the manager even took one of the meals back to the kitchen so one of the meals wouldnt get cold, but this time was less than average. i ordered the steak done rare- it was nearly cooked well, then it was meant to come with some glaze or reduction or something- it literally came with gravy, which at $30 is unacceptable. Really bogan over priced steak. I am a ceoliac and the menu doesnt stipulate what is and isnt gluten free and often the staff arent sure either. I ordered the steak just because its never usually not gluten free- so when this reduction glaze thing turned out to be gravy i felt bitterly disappointed. Really not good enough!
Steph
Fantastic. We stumbled across this place by accident, and boy are we glad we did! We've since been back a few times and everything has been awesome.
The beer garden outside is great to sit and chat with friends the heaters keep you snug in winter. I had the chicken Kiev and it was perfectly cooked and delicious. The Standard Hotel will become a regular.
AmandaH
My fish was dry, over cooked and not fresh. It had a very strong fishy smell that you get with old fish. The roasted veggies were oily and soggy. The whole meal was bland. For $27 I felt very cheated. Wait staff not the friendliest either. I gave this place a second go after having under cooked mussels, but not again! So many better pubs in Fitzroy that actually do good food.
Ramone De La Vega
Best parma in Melbourne. I'm just going to put it out there... hands down the single best parma I've had in this fair city (this includes a very thorough, multi-suburb search for the perfect parma on my part). Staff are friendly, always interesting beers on tap too.
PuMan
Come for the beergarden. Amazing beergarden in the back
Quality of live performances very uneven
Pub food if OK and comes in big portion
Definitely a good place to go for a drink
Simone Morris
Impressed. I visit this pub regularly. The chili bean enchiladas are my favourite. I don't really like change like most people, and they taste the same every time i get them. AMAZING!!!!!! Comes with salad well dressed with 3 enchiladas and jalapenos with small piece of sweet corn. Big meals! my friends always get the parma, which they also rate.
The court yard is a huge and gets lots of people on the weekends. In winter its warm and cozy with heater panels and can also be covered up if the weather is no good.
The atmosphere is great with lots of locals and regulars.
10/10 for consistency.
BK
Excellent!. Went to the Standard for dinner with a group of friends. The food was amazing and they have a good variety of beers - both of which were reasonably priced. The staff were very attentive and friendly, they made me feel welcome and assisted me with both my food and beverage selection (I am very indecisive). We didn't wait long for the food, which was delicious! I had the enchiladas which I highly recommend. The beer garden is lovely and relaxed... Great chill place to go with friends for a meal and beers, will definitely go back!
Sophie
Wow. Comfortable atmosphere, fantastic food, good value $, great beers and excellent staff. Wish more places were like this. Our waitress made us immediately feel welcome & proceeded to give us a friendly but professional and knowledgeable overview of the beer then food menu. Off to a good start and the night got better & better. The highlight for us was the food. Bravo, you have won a new regular. PS - Recommend highly the Chicken Parmigiana!! :-)
Armando
Amazing food. Cool atmosphere great beer garden. The Parma is one of the best I have had in melbourne. This is how a pub should be!
MelbFoodie
Great stuff!!. Super cool hotel in the back streets off fitzroy. Great fresh fish & chips, awesome beer garden, friendly young staff.
Paul G
Terrible. Poor bar staff, extremely amateur jitchen staff. Waited 50 mins for a Parma after ordering at 845 pm on tues night. Table of 5 sat next to me 10 minutes after I ordered, all well and truly finished meal far before my table of two were served. Defensive attitude from staff, never again.
Richie Ogrowsky
Had the chicken kiev which was beautifully cooked with lovely mash. Definitely will be back. Staff are attentive and food was quick to come.
Mel Bourne
Great. Had a fantastic large group dinner here. It was excellent - relaxed, food was delicious, and staff were great. Not sure about all the comments here about staff being "rude"; I've never had a problem here when ordering food or drinks.
Joan Smith
Don't bother. Rudeness will make you loose more customers then you think, what a shameless lack of customer service.
Joe Bloggs
Went there for lunch, after an hour and 15 minutes went to the bar to enquire where our food was. Was ignored by the male barman, then when I was finally approached by one of the bar staff, the girl told me "I don't know if anyone told you, but there is a wait on the food". Funny considering she was the one who I ordered from, did not tell me when I ordered that there was a wait. Food came, mediocre. Won't eat there again. Rude staff
Bertramis
Rude staff. I used to go here frequently with friends. Got sick of dealing with rude staff. Food not great.
Mitch Cameron
Nice pub. Food is better than your average pub fare, but what ever happened to the friendly local.
Hungry
Give it a chance. Went early in the week, no dramas with staff at all and the food was brilliant. Maybe not quite as good as the napier but would happily go back.
OPERAKAT
Great lunch on a busy Friday, pity about the attitude from the staff, maybe it's a Fitzroy thing
Nicky Broadley
Good pub let down by staff. The staff at this place need an overhaul , the waitress with the black hair needs a attitude transplant. Working in a bar is not cool, its a job, look after the people that pay your wages and you may even earn more with good tips. wont be back cos certain staff members just annoy me with their too cool for scholl attitude.

Great staff!. I love the shanks here! The food is well-priced and very tasty. I have no idea what some of the other reviewers are talking about. I have been comng here semi-regularly for a few years now and have always had excellent service. I suppose that if you are rude to staff they will reciprocate. A please and thank-you go a long way. I particularly like the Scotsman, Dave? He's great and always plays interesting, cool music. in short, a great little pub.

RUDE STAFF. Urgh. Rude dudes behind the bar- especially the kid with the american? accent. Food pretty meh.
Not sure what they're feeling all smug about.
Funnily enough I bumped into my brother who'd coincidentally been there an hour or so after me and the first thing he brought up was the fact the bar staff were harsh and he left because he couldn't be assed copping their 'tude.
Don't worry about it folks- there are great pubs aplenty in Fitzroy & Collingwood. We're spoilt for choice.
Will not be back

Expensive food, slow service and rude staff!. As a Fitzroy local I have visited The Standard many times over the years, but after so many disappointing meals I have finally decided enough is enough. The mediocre and expensive food can be absolutely terrible with wait times always exceeding 1 hour. The staff would have to be the rudest in Melbourne and are convinced working at "The Standard" is akin to being the frontman of Guns & Roses!!
Try The Napier, The Union or even the Pumphouse

Fantastic chicken parma, full of flavour! Only problem, i wanted more!

Good Food- Staff RUDE! Parma? Yum. Friendly service? None. I like the food here. It's great actually. Big serves, good chips and dips and burgers! I am put off my the super loud environment in the dining room in particular. We had I literally yell at each other in conversation. Every time I went to the bar for a drink, I felt like i was an inconvenience! Sorry, I thought this was a bar my mistake... Oh no! Hold on it IS a bar! Some good customer service training would go astray for these guys.

Great Atmosphere. Huge outdoor dinning area, above average food, and a good bar selection. Recommend.

Very decent pub food. Fair sized meals at fair price and nicely flavoured. Had the chicken parma which was tasty, good quality chicken breast that seemed panfried rather than deepfried - nice. Other half had the Morrocan pork belly that came with couscous and other accompaniments that worked well. Shared the calamari salad because the ingredients sounded appealing and it didn't disappoint. Calamari was nicely cooked too. Nice beer garden but found the choice of beer on tap somewhat lacking - a few local craft beers would be nice. Overall good place to go for a decent pub meal.
Lunch Club
Lunch Club visited The Standard today and being close to Xmas the place was almost fully booked out. We managed a table and ordered entrees to share along with our mains. Surprisingly the meals arrived reasonably quickly considering how busy they were. The meals were amazing with special mention to the Chicken Parma which was sensational. Extraordinary value for money. Great surroundings. A must for any serious pub enthusiast.

I had dinner there on Sunday sitting about 1 metre away from Kim Salmon pushin out a few toons. The Chicken Kiev was worth the wait. Simply the best chicken I've had in a pub restuarant...ever.

Best dips!. Best dips and bread, fantastic beer garden and away from the hustle and bustle of Brunswick Street.

great place

One of the best places to go for beer in summer for sure. However, the food is awful.usually overcooked or cold. The bar staff are rude to. Just go for a beer in the beer garden in summer

Fab outdoor area on a sunny afternoon, better than usual pub food. The Standard is and has been a Fitzroy institution for years.

Had the calamari salad & unfortunately it was revolting. Red onion for days & overcooked calamari. Really disappointing because I liked the decor & ambiance. Staff were a little cold...

Beer=good food=bad. Title says most of it!

Great place to go and hang out for a beer on a Saturday afternoon. Not so good for a meal on a Saturday night. Shame really.

Steak was overcooked and tough. Food took ages (longer wait expected but an hour???) to come.

As someone not too fussy though, I am sure I will be back to give it another go!
Graham
Great, good quality pub food, staff are efficient but can be a bit aloof and cold.

Definitely try this place. I see there are some reviews saying the food wasn't that good. Ive been to the Standard quite a few times and can truly say I have not been disappointed. Try their Enchiladas and the Chicken Kiev (it's not the usual Kiev one thinks of).

Some may think the place is a little grungy, but the number of clientele says otherwise. Always busy and totally enjoyable.

Great Pub Grub. I think The Standard must have picked up its game since some of the older reviews were written. Last night I had a terrific duck dish - good portion and really tasty. I was surprised to have such a great dish at a venue that looked more like an old-fashioned bar than an eatery - very 20 something vibe. No table service, so if you're not in the mood for lining up, it's maybe not for you. But if you're in a casual mood and want some great honest food - give it a go.

Some of the best pub food going, at average pub food prices. Great beer, great staff, great food, great music - the perfect local. Try the veal.

Enchiladas are muchos awesome-o. Best Enchiladas in town. It is obscene how good they are! Not for the faint hearted..must have a healthy appetite to get through this one!

Bad food? Seriously?. I've eaten there a lot over the years and pretty much everything I've had has been good. Maybe one veggie meal was a little lacking in the portion size, but otherwise fine.

I've never eaten a parma though, just that little bit wrong for my taste.

Good for a beer not food. Good spot to have a beer or five. But the food if awful and taste like soaked cardboard. Keep away from the food.
Lisa
Great pub but don't eat there..... Really good pub, usually good music but for F sake don't eat there, the meal I had last night was one of the worst of the last 10 years, seriously.
Amelia
Great outdoor area, green and sheltered. The food is very ordinary though. Our parma was stodgy and salads was too oily. Good place for a drink with friends.
Lukas
Overpiced. Yeah the food is pretty good, but $19 for a parma? cmon!

Best parmas in Melbourne

Very good. Friendly environment, great service and good food. We only had bar snacks ... most care I've ever seen taken in bar snacks. Highly recommended - can't wait to go back for the mains. - update - returned a couple of times for dinner and can say it is as good as expected.
Eating Melbourne
The Standard Hotel is the sort of pub that white people like. It's hidden down a residential Fitzroy street, it has a huge beer garden, it has live music, and it is so chock full of hipsters
