Over the decades some things change and some stay the same. In the case of Old Kingdom the latter is true, and the food is still amazing - albeit served in a different location.
Our last experience was with takeaway during iso. The duck banquet is generous and good value for money. The Peking duck as ever is some of the best in Melbourne.
We ordered directly from the restaurant in lieu of ordering through Door Dash with their high mark ups and cut of the restaurant's profits. After picking up our order and getting home we noticed that the bean shoot and duck dish was missing. A quick call to the restaurant resulted in a staff member driving over to our house an delivering the dish post-haste.
Will definitely continue to support the restaurant. Thanks team!
Less atmosphere than its Smith St predecessor but nonetheless a worthwhile visit if you’re craving Peking Duck. It seems they have hundreds out the back of the restaurant, hanging out waiting to be devoured with a lash of hoisin and baton of cucumber, all wrapped in a thin warm pancake. The follow up dishes of duck/bean sprout and soup are also satisfying. You can take or leave the rest of the menu as the duck rightly rules here.
This place never disappoint with their Peking duck. My parents always request to come here at least once whenever they visit melbs. There’s unlimited soup as well and I’m actually in love with it! Just rmb to book a place before going to the restaurant cause it’s always packed!
The Peking Duck is a beauty. Served with some pomp and flair and appropriately so because it’s excellent. It’s bright, busling and sometimes full on here. But, it certainly works.

Old Kingdom recently moved to Richmond and they’re still doing excellent Peking Duck. Crispy, juicy and delicious. It was hard to get the waiter’s attention during the busy period so it can feel like you’re not getting the attention you deserve at a restaurant but they make up for it with their delicious no fuss food.
We ordered for 3 whole pecking duck and made the rest of the duck into stir fry bean sprout, duck fried rice and ramen. I could say that the bean sprout and fried rice is AMAZING! Didn’t really enjoyed the ramen since it was very dry and hard. We were in a pax of 7 and brought some leftover home. Quite generous with their portion.
I swear I can eat a whole pecking duck banquet by myself at old kingdom..... tried their new location and I am still in love. It was busy the night my friends and I were here so food came out fairly slow, but when food did arrive we understood why. Food was so fresh and jooooooocy. A place that will never let me down.
Mouth watering peking duck. I also loved their fried tofu dish. It is a must try besides the famous roast duck. Service could be slow in peak hours however staffs were nice and smiling whenever we needed something. Wish we could have more cucumber and spring onions instead of paying extra for $2 however considered the reasonable price they put on the whole duck with stir fried bean sprouts and soup ($58 for 1 combo and $8 extra if you want to add noodles)
Old Kingdom serves up excellent value for money and deliciously crisp peking duck. For $65 you can get a whole peking duck, duck soup and stirfried vegies and duck. All more than enough to feed a table of two.

Amidst all the modern eateries around Fitzroy is this traditional Chinese restaurant serving authentic Peking duck. We decided to get takeaway duck fried noodles from here and it was very nice. They gave us two boxes - one for the noodles to keep them fresh and crispy, and one for the sauce with cooked bean sprouts and duck meat. It was flavourful and the texture of the noodles was great. Portion size was very decent for the price!
Love the peking duck. They cut the first duck in front of us, making a good presentation. The duck was served with pancakes on the side. Although it was a bit hard to separate the pancakes, but it was the perfect way to eat the peking duck. The skin was crispy, the sauce added a sweetness to it, and the cucumber was a refreshing touch. The other dishes like noodle and soup were also tasty.

I’ve heard good things about Old Kingdom and the last time I wandered down here, it was closed. Today was my lucky day! FYI, during the week they only open for lunch if they have bookings. So my mate and I shared a duck and first round is pancakes. How I love thee! Plenty of crunchy skin and tissue thin pancakes with some cucumber and a dollop of hoi sin sauce. Amazing! Second course they stir fry some of the duck with bean shoots. Third course is a broth. I love the fact that they use all pieces of the duck - and it’s us that reaps the rewards. We also ordered some of the baked scallop shells and they were also top notch. Why haven’t I been here before?? I’ll be back again soon - for sure!

It was my first time to have peking duck and it was a good experience for the first timer.
The first set(duck with pancakes) was my favourite as the staff sliced the roasted duck into pieces in front of the customer.

My family stopped by Old Kingdom following an event to try some peking duck for the first time! I was so excited to finally dine at a restaurant that specialized in duck and I was not disappointed!

The interior is simple and very asian-style, however given the location and the family style restaurant environment I observed, i understand interior may be the least of their problems and isn’t something that would take away from their delicious food!

Definitely a highlight, staff were attentive, speedy and helpful. Food was cut and distributed to our family at the table, this type of personal service is rare at such a reasonable price these days so it’s something i really appreciated.
The last dish, the duck soup, we asked for a takeaway box to take the rest home, and the chef upon hearing this left to the kitchen for quite some time, returning with a new box of duck soup, saying that ours is cold now and this one is better - super thankful for such hospitality!

Honestly the only thing you need to order here is the $59 duck banquet which will leave 2 patrons stuffed to the brim! Every dish was so delicious, the duck skin was extremely crispy and the crepes were so thin. Every single dish had nothing to fault.
Overall i highly HIGHLY recommend old kingdom for any duck cravings, you won’t be disappointed by the food and definitely by the service! Thank you for having us!
After going to the one in Surrey Hills, I had really high expectations for this one and it didn't disappoint. Although the place was more empty, the food was still delicious. Compared to Surrey Hills, they served more portions of Peking Duck, so you'll definitely get your money's worth. The cripsy noodles and fried rice were also delicious. I prefer this place to the other one.
Tasty tasty tasty! Wouldn't go anywhere else for duck. Only downside is the place is a little cramped. If you get the usual 3 course meal you will definitely not leave this place hungry! The wait staff are quite entertaining and seem to enjoy serving duck. If you get served by the owner, don't be surprised to get force fed duck while he cuts it in front of you!
Went for a friend’s birthday on a Friday night for dinner. If you have a group of people, I highly recommend you book as they get extremely busy. We ordered three of the set duck menu which included Peking duck pancakes, stir fried noodles with bean shoots and a duck and vegetable soup. The pancakes were the best I’ve ever had, the duck was fragrant and had crispy skin, they even carve the duck in front of you. We ordered extra noodle. You get three choices- crispy, normal and ramen. We got all three and my favourite was the ramen version as I felt like it had more flavour. The soup was a warming broth with bits of duck, tofu and various vegetables. Think of those chicken soups you’d have when you’re feeling under the weather. The service was really fast and the lady was so kind to us. Will definitely go again and try what else they have to offer.

The venue itself has two floors, looks dirty and the tables are set out with no order. Getting to the stairs to go to the toilet - (through the kitchen prep area) is an adventure in itself. The service is lousy and paying for your meal is absolute chaos.
All that being said, I don’t care, they don’t care, I’ll keep coming back with my big groups of people because the price and food is just that good.

Always the same here, 1 duck between 2 people, don’t bother ordering anything else. You should get approximately 5 pancakes, 1 leg, 1 wing. Followed by duck noodles, followed by duck soup.

Oh my goodness! The duck! Soup - amazing! Duck- amazing! I think I love it because it’s such an economical way of using one duck. Wasn’t too keen on other dishes, but really you should just come and have the duck!
The best place to get peking duck! The meat is juicy and tender whilst the skin is super crunchy! Been here a few times and left every time with a happy stomach. Would definitely recommend this place especially if you're after peking duck!

You have to come here for the simple, juicy pleasures of duck. Duck, duck, and ladies and gentleman....more duck. Upstairs you can squeeze about 20 people over two tables, pop your bib on, and get busy. It’s steamy and stuffy, and can get loud, and fun. Duck soup, roast duck, duck pancakes love a duck. It’s delicious. Hot. Fast. And won’t pinch your pockets. I love a messy, boozy table with friends, and here is a favourite of mine.
The best for duck - that’s simply it. Simple but great food & service - ive tried a few in melbourne but always return to this place. Best duck (& im not even a duck fan)

We came here to try pecking ducks. The place has 2 floors we sat on the second floor it was a bit stuffy. The staff was really nice.

One of the best Peking duck that I have had. The meat was so lean and the skin was crispy that it doesn’t get sickening. My family came here last night and we received great service even though it was quite busy. Food was great because it felt like they were home cooked dishes and the ambience made us feel that way as well. The dishes that stood out to me was of course the Peking duck, salted Calamari and Fried Tofu 👌
Main dish this restuarant focuses on is peking duck, so they dont serve too much of a variety but their duck is tender and the wrap, sauce along with duck is delicious, no complaints with this place and will be back again c:
It has been such a long time since I last laid my eyes on a delectable piece of Peking duck and seeing that it is the holiday season after all, I did not want to miss the opportunity to stuff myself silly. Having heard peeps rave about this restaurant, we ducked (haha geddit?) here after I clocked off for the day. The restaurant has very narrow walkways considering that they must have tried to squeeze as many tables possible into the vicinity. Service is efficient despite the minimal space between tables and diners.
Ratio Decidendi: Life comes full circle following the sale and decline of Simon’s Peking Duck under new management. Pending the return of Simon “the duck nazi” Lay with what would be his second encore, the original Old Kingdom would appear to be the go-to place for your Peking duck fix. It’s never been quite the same without Simon roaming the tables and remonstrating with his cleaver while barking at customers about how their spring onion and cucumber is in the wrong position, but when it comes to the duck, they’ve managed to do a much better job of maintaining the standards set by former patriarch.
Consistently good and delicious Chinese food! Definitely better atmosphere and service at this outlet. A regular family favourite. Great place to take visitors.
Not only the best Peking duck in Melbourne, but excellent service and BYOW at $1.80 per person. Top quality food at reasonable prices and many specialties, including deboned stuffed quail and fresh scallops....I wsill certainly return!
Great restaurant to visit for some Peking duck. The good thing is that you don't need to call ahead to reserve a duck as they usually have plenty in stock. So if you just happen to be in the area and feel like having duck, chances are they will have one for you.
Our duck has crispy skin and was juicy on the inside and not hard and dry like some other Peking duck we've had at other restaurants. The pancakes are also warm which we preferred. The other dishes we ordered were also delicious were the golden tofu and kang Kong. The tofu were light on the inside with a nice crispy skin.
One duck is a good amount to share amongst 4 people to ensure everyone gets to enjoy a few pieces and still have room to try other dishes.

Down the street of Smith St Fitzory, Old Kingdom continues to live on over the decades with the similar wood interiors and small spaces. The proximity from the entrance and exits to tables is not far apart. The restaurant is lively with large families, friends and chatter. While other Fitzory restaurants are beautifying their restaurants- this place keeps it super casual. So don’t dress up.
The main course is the duck and it is delicious. Your eyes will be beaming when you watch the staff cut the duck in front of your eyes. The Peking duck is fatty, tender, and flavourful and with the scallion/onion it gives the dish a bit of a kick. The crepes are soft, not sweet, and are perfectly portioned to the cuts of meat. For the sauce, Old Kingdom keeps it simple with the hoisin sauce which is fairly sweet (still yummy) so do not be too generous when coating your duck.
Second course is the stir fried beansprouts stir-fry with the left over duck and you can pay a little extra for some noodles. This dish can go wrong if it is too salty and if the duck is dry. And Old Kingdom does it just right!
Lastly, you will be served with salted vegetable soup combined with the flavours of the duck as well. It’s the perfect way to finish off your meal during this cold weather.
If you’re thinking of trying Peking duck for the first time or want a bang for your buck then this is the place. It’s cash only- so come prepared. Just a tip there’s a bottle shop next door so maybe pop by before coming.
There's always been a running debate in my circle of friends: which one is better - Old Kingdom or Simon's? As I've never had Old Kingdom's Peking duck before, I never participated in the convo. Now though, I can safely say I am pro-Old Kingdom 100%.
The staff was super friendly which took us al aback because we're used to snappy service at traditional Chinese joints! The Peking Duck with 'pancakes' were the absolute star of my dinner. Thinly cut, perfectly cooked meat and super crisp skin - I liked how tender the duck was! I'm a picky duck eater because I can't stand the gamey smell of some prepared ducks but Old Kingdom's ducks were just awesome. The noodles and veggies didn't have a lot of flavour, and whilst the soup was quite good; it just triggered my MSG intolerance and I felt quite strange for a while. But I will definitely come back for the Peking Duck. So good!
Been waiting to come try the popular duck banquet of 3 courses. Firstly you get roll your own pancakes with fresh slices they carve from a whole roast duck at your table. Skin was super crispy and meat was very succulent! Sadly aromatic spice flavours were missing and our pancakes were cold and spongy. We opted for noodles for an extra $8 to bulk up our meal and it was passable. Next came the soup which was also average. Looking at other reviewer's photos of the Surrey Hills branch, it seems that branch has more finesse.
I have never thought abt i can try such scrumptious Chinese Peking Duck in Mel. For additional cucumber and spring onion are free but $10 is required for additional handmade pancake (actually it's more like crepe)which is really light, you don't wanna stop eating. There are 3 courses for a duck, including peking duck, fried some duck meat with sprouts and soup which is made with the bone cage of the duck, it costs $58. extra noodles can be added in the fried one, $8 is required. It was quite good for snapchat or video users coz they will peel the whole duck in front of you, it's time to get more 'like'. If you are looking for a nice environment for a sit down meal, this may not be exactly you are after. But I can guarantee the food, especially the duck will not let you down. The restaurant is not very spacious and the decor and furniture is a bit old if I may. However, the duck is to die for. Remember to preorder though. If you don't , you may not be able to get one when you walk in. That's how popular their duck is. Each duck comes with a serve or rice and soup. The two of us stuffed our faces and still got quite a bit to take home. If you are a Pecking duck fan, this is the place you should go.

The quality of the food was spectacular but don't expect to much from atmosphere (as there was no music) and the restaurant was definitely under staffed with no knowledge in basic hospitality skills. Would definitely return to bring a friend for dinner and wine.
One of the few establishments in Melbourne that you think of when it comes to peking duck. Peking duck is solid with excellent crispy skin and condiments to match. The stir fry is average and lacked seasoning and you really need to pay the extra to add noodles otherwise there isn't any point. The duck soup was nicely flavored.
Service is what you expect from a Chinese restaurant, not the best, not the worst, but it doesn't need to be. They know the food speaks for themselves and most will be back even if the service isn't their strong point.

It's been ten years since my last visit, the three course set is more or less as I remembered it. The restaurant is a quiet, dimly lit affair that serves its dishes with quiet efficiency. Decent tasting duck, and it's always fun using the pancakes to wrap duck slices fresh off the knife. Don't doubt that there are likely other places that have better roasted duck, but if you're in the area you could do worse than check this out. Caveat: It's been a long while, but I still feel like the duck seemed to be better back then.
The only place I go to when I'm craving pecking duck! Good value for money. $55 for a three course meal and extra $6-8 for noodles in the second dish. I always leave this place satisfied. I can't fault the duck but don't order anything else on the menu. Everything else is average.
It looks the same. The atmosphere is the same. The food might actually be better in some areas. And that is the way institutions are supposed to be. To be exactly as they have lived in our memories for years and years.
Luckily, the stories I have are from years ago. When, on those particular nights, the waitperson was charming and funny. The only lacking element tonight is the ability of the waitstaff to interact and add that X factor to the meal.

Easily best Peking Duck in Melbourne so far. We know Simon used to run this place but surprisingly we think this place as at now does taste better than at Simon's.
We did order the duck 3 ways for $58 which we thought was pretty reasonable. The duck was prepared in about 10 mins and cut right at your table, which was indeed a little fun to watch.
The duck meat was absolute yum, the skin was crispy and the meat was juicy and tender. The fat was minimal and the sauce was on point. Though we would appreciate a few more pancakes or if the price for extra pancakes wouldn't be too outrageous ($1 a piece)
The second course was the shredded duck meat with stir-fried beanshoots which was okay if you have it with noodles - Luke despises bean shoots, however, so he had to pick them all out.
The last course was the duck soup which was again great in flavour. The soup was slightly sweet which came from cooked bones and went really well with tofu and duck meat.
Overall, we definitely return the next time we crave for some duck.

Was highly recommended to come here by friends and Le Boy booked us in for a three course Peking duck dinner at $58 a duck and $8 per serve of extra ramen noodles.
First course: Whole duck served with pancakes, spring onion, cucumber and sauce
This was delicious. Watching our server carve up the duck was also quite entertaining and fascinating to watch
Second course: stir fried beanshoots with shredded duck meat + two extra serves of ramen noodles
Again very delicious, a little over priced at $8 per person for ramen servings that wasn't very much at all.
Third course: salted vegetable and duck soup
Very tasty but quite oily from the roasted duck.
Overall the meal was very satisfying and just right in terms of how full we were. A great deal overall (albeit the extra noodles were a little pricey as we had expected more noodles) But for what it's worth, you are still getting good value at $58/duck for a three course meal.
Service was prompt but the dining layout can be a bit tight to move around. Everyone else appeared to be enjoying themselves too.

You pay $58 for a 3-course meal from a whole duck that feeds 2-3 people.
You start off with carved duck slices which you wrap in a thin pancake by yourselves. The skin of the duck is crispy!
Then, you're served stir fry bean shoots/sprouts with the remaining duck meat pulled from the carcass. You have the option to add noodles/ramen to this for an additional $8 per serve, but we find that unnecessary. Less carbs is better :P
Finally, the carcass is used to make a broth/soup, which is the final dish.

Popular then and still popular now. The duck meat is savoury and juicy, the skin is crispy and fatty. Obligatory destination to bring hungry tourist/family/friends. They will be sure to enjoy Old Kingdom's signature peking duck. I will recommend adding extra noodle to the bean sprout and maybe a side of simple vegetable dish. The soup is full of flavour and I love it specially during cold weather.

Quack quack quack, we came here for the duck banquet and it delivered. With a group of 6 hungry males we walked out more than happy after the banquet. The meal included the crispy Peking duck served in pancakes, salted vegetable and duck soup and stir fry duck with beanshoots. The big winner was the pancakes, where the meat was delicious, crispy and the hoi sin sauce on point. This is the highlight of the meal and the rest pales in comparison. But don't let that put you off as for $58 per duck you will surely get your money's worth. Plus grab a six pack next door or a bottle of wine as it's byo.
Old Kingdom is an institution for lovers of Peking duck.
The only comparable duck purveyors reside at Crown and Flower Drum, where you'll be paying multiples.

I was very excited about the peaking duck set, but felt the meal came out backwards, The crispy duck was amazing but came out first therefore nothing to look forward too as the noodles and soup where average. Staff could speck to customers more in regards to what how the duck set works, as we felt ripped of when he walked away with a whole duck after only scrapping the crispy part off, little did we know the rest of the duck, I am only assuming was in the noodles and soup .
Best peking duck I had so far in Melbourne no doubts. $58 is a reasonable price and the quality was great. 3 of us shared a duck and some side dishes as well as dessert. The place is simple, nothing fancy and on the older side but you know what: we came here for duck and it truly was the duck's nuts!
Old Kingdom has a very good first course (duck with pancakes) which I find almost as good as Simon's in Box Hill. However the second course (oily flavourless noodles) is horrible and the soup is nothing special. 2nd and 3rd course are much better at Simon's and so is the atmosphere.
It's a simple place that does one thing really well....DUCK ! It's always busy the food is great and cheap. The service can be a little lacking and the decor is average ,but the duck is awesome. $58 per duck , one duck between 2. Be there a number of times and it's always the same. Worth going

If you're craving Peking Duck this is the place to go to. Value for money and great quality. Three course duck meal including duck soup, Peking duck pancakes and shredded duck with beanshoots. Every dish was tasty and delicious. I've have Peking duck in China and this is up there.
Owners are great and staff are super friendly. Make sure you call ahead and pre-order the ducks so that you don't miss out.

Gone up in price and a little more expensive than the Old Kingdom in Surrey Hills ($58 vs $55/duck which is ok but $1 vs $0.50 per extra piece of pancake is a bit of a ripoff I think!) but still worthwhile when you divide that amount of food between a group. We had someone else on the table who wanted to join for the hype but wouldn't eat duck so ordered Timorese chicken and also quail. These dishes weren't anything special, more pricey than other places but the big plate of Chinese broccoli was great. Don't come for the other dishes, come here for the delicious duck of course. BYO only, corkage $1.80 per person and they automatically charge for everyone on the table even though not all were drinking our wine. We made the mistake of asking for rice thinking it was a bowl to share but instead given and charged per head despite only a few of us eating rice. Service friendly enough (it's a Chinese restaurant after all...) but make sure you clarify who's having what with the little extras, else you'll be overcharged! Nice to still have a Peking duck restaurant in the inner suburbs rather than having to head out further or finding parking in the city!
Finally dined in this restaurant after hearing heaps of good things about their peking duck and it definitely lived up to expectation. The duck is crispy and juicy and the price is really reasonable as well!

Heaps of reviews saying this is not good because it's no where near quality of Peking duck in China...cool story but you are not in China!!! Compared to the Melbourne options around, the duck here is great and pancakes incredibly thin and well made. For $55 for 1 duck 3 ways, you can't complain. Soup could have been better though - lots of bones in the soup which have been cooking for a long time and almost disintegrating so you get little bits of bone in the soup, not enjoyable. Otherwise, great meal! Will be back again when I have Peking duck cravings.
Been here easily 20 times now, out of the 20 times, I've been disappointed only twice. The 2 times I have been disappointed I went in really late, they were closing up - so the duck was really oily and made me feel sick. Having said so, all the other times I had went, I was so satisfied. Duck was delicious, service was great (I think I get served from the owner) - his so hands on with his business and he has such a great sense of humor. I would recommend Old Kingdom and they definitely haven't seen the last of me!! =)

Pretty authentic Peking duck from a Chinese point of view, despite the serving amount is way more few than those we get in China. But in general the atmosphere is good, and the duck is delicious.

If you like duck, you've definitely hit the jackpot here. Two birds feeds four people over three courses, and will set you back the princely sum of $110. Duck pancakes are served first, followed by soup and stirfry (or it could be the other way around). Either way, it was way too much duck for me but not nearly enough for my duck-obsessed friends. Take a big appetite and a huge love for duck. Too much love will not be enough.

As you can read from the other reviews - the duck is pretty awesome. For $55 for soup, stir-fried bean-sprouts, and peaking duck - its good value!
But after being to both the Surry Hills and Fitzroy shops - I have to say the Surry Hills one is the one I prefer. The duck was juicer and the stir-fry bean-sprouts with egg noddles was tastier. If you have the choice, give it a go!
In saying that, by no means is Fitzroy bad - its fantastic! (a little small in terms of interior space though)
The whole duck 3-course meal was great ($55 for peking duck, duck soup, and bean shoots stir fry w/ the remaining duck meat). However, it only came with like 10 pieces of pancake when clearly 1 duck can give you a lot more than 10 pancakes. I feel like they are being stingy and they want people to order extra pancakes because 1 piece cost $1 (very expensive for what it is).
Foods other than the duck are not great. We ordered the jumbo shrimp and the calamari. The pictures on the menu are very deceiving. The actual foods look nothing like them. Even though the seafood themselves taste fresh, they can't seem to make a good deep-fry batter and seasoning (cheap pubs do a lot better than them). It was very bland.

Had the full Peking duck experience for lunch here. While it doesn't look like much from the street front it was made up for in the meal. Each course was spot on and everyone left very satisfied.

I continue to be impressed and will continue to visit. It's really nice to know that one of the world's best Peking Duck restaurants is in my backyard and at a very affordable price. I have been to Quanjude in Beijing which is a household name associated with Peking Duck, and while the experience there is amazing - the duck here can stand proud in comparison.

Have to say i barely see any authentic or true Beijing style peking duck places when I am overseas, but this place I have to give a recommendation. The $58 three course duck set is very well worth it, still the best in Melbourne above the likes of Da Hu, Quanjude, and dare I say, Simon's. Definitely satisfied my Peking duck craving. Though, keep in mind that the ambience/ decor in this place isn't very well polished.

Crispy duck!. Came here for the $55 duck set which comprises of three courses. The Peking duck was very well prepared, I believe it's the best that Melbourne has to offer when compared to the authentic ones I had in Beijing. The stir fry was very flavourful, albeit slightly oily. Omnomnom. The soup, however, was nothing special but what can you expect from a mere soup?
$55 for what you get is very well priced! The portion is perfect for two very big eaters, but I believe a reservation is necessary because the restaurant needs to prepare the duck with notice.

Good Peking Duck. There were 6 of us and naturally we ordered the peking duck. When we go to any chinese restaurant we prep ourselves for one thing, don't expect great service and you will be fine.
Food was above average, the peking duck as expected was good, succulent meat, crispy skin and nice wraps. The sauce was a tad sweet so don't spread too much unless you like it rather sweet.
Salt and pepper soft shell crabs was very nice and crispy without being too oily. I find it very skillful to be able to deep fry something without loads of oil oozing from it when you eat it. Higly recommended. It could use a bit of salt flavour wise.
We also ordered sweet chili pork ribs. Good sweetness as it was not overpowering and very tender ribs.
The belacan kangkung could use more belacan as it was rather bland.
Szchuan chili prawns were succulent but a tad spicy. If you can't handle heat, don't order this dish. If you're a dragon like me, enjoy!
We finished off the meal with the 3rd course of the peking duck which was the duck soup. Very good finisher to a meal, the soup was flavoursome with nice slight spicy finish and the tofus in the soup were nice.
Overall a good experience. Too bad the space is rather cramped and upstairs might be difficult for elderly patrons to walk up a flight of stairs to.

Great Old Duck Kingdom. Other reckon it is not as good as it used to be. I think it's still a good dinning experience. Have to try the 3 course meal duck. There were 8 of us and ordered 2 ducks for a light dinner. Really enjoyed the peking duck and bean shoot stir fried, but the soup was not up the par.
Duck club. Have been here twice. Have formed a duck club with two friends. We order two ducks to share. It is awesome. Pancakes are so thin and delicious. The duck is succulent and crispy. We have noodles and fried rice with our second course. Always too much food. The fact that its BYO with no corkage is great. Can't wait to go back again.
Best duck in Melbourne. Old Kingdom is my first preference for duck in Melbourne. Each course of peking duck done differently is completely delicious, and the waiter who expertly slices the meat in front of you puts on a great show.

Best Peking duck I've ever had, tried so many and an old fav dish of mine.. Do the duck special they serve it up in 3 courses, crispy juicy lip smacking!! Yummy duck duck. My friend took me to this place last week and between 4 people we ordered one pecking duck course/ soft shell crabs/ pork ribs also fried banana with icecream and fried ice cream.
Everything was yumyum and food came out really fast. The bill was also really cheap it was about $120 all together! WOW only $30 per person after eating like a pig. I'd love to go back sometimes
Tasty Duck. The Peking Duck here is excellent and very much the same as the peking duck you find in Beijing. The pancakes or crepes that the duck is served with are just perfect. We had a group of 9 and between us shared 5 ducks. We had the set menu of the pancakes followed by the bean shoot salad (yum!) and finished with the soup. Was great! It is BYO beer and wine so makes for a very cheap but very tasty dinner. Definitely need to book - we went on a Tuesday night and it was full. If you love duck, this is a must do!

Lovely duck. Been here a few times now and will definitely keep going back. Had the peking duck (three ways, as served), and can also recommend the peking beef and Singapore noodles - they have a nice bite to them. Best of all this place is BYO and very reasonably priced. They sure put on a good show. Had a satisfying and filling dinner at this Melbourne establishment, with some good company to top it all off!
The head chef (I presume) came out to the table about 10 minutes after we had been seated and presented us with this mouth-watering Peking duck.
Judging from the way he efficiently carved off the skin from the duck, we could tell we were in for a treat.
Once we were done with the first duck and everyone was talking about how great it tasted, there was certainly no complaints when the second duck appeared. (note that there were only 4 people on our table)
Taking the advice of one the reviews that had been previously written, I had requested that the crispy fried egg noodles be added to our second course. This I had to say, added the much required texture to the duck stir fry with bean sprouts.
The last dish of the three dished to be made out of the duck was the duck soup. This was nice, but I think pales in comparison to the first town dishes.
For the price of $55 per duck, cooked three ways, this is an added bonus for price conscious patrons who are after a satisfying meal.

Crispy pecking duck!. Great pecking duck - was worried the standard had changed given some of the recent reviews but the pecking duck is definitely still worth it. pancakes are delicious (esp the hoisin/plum sauce) and so too is the second dish (shredded duck with bean shoots). Broth is not nice, however, I'm always too full to even look at it!
Having just been in China this year I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's a set menu and not ideal for vegetarians. The duck was good and they show you how to construct the pancake. That was followed by another duck dish stir fried with bean sprouts, then some soup. We had a table of 15, and we were all very full at the end. You can BYO from the bottle'o next door. I'd go back for more duck..

Duck three ways. If you like Peking Duck - and most people do - you should try this place.
You start by letting the waiter know how many ducks you want 1 between 2 people or 2 between 3 is a pretty good guide. In the end it only equates to how much duck pancakes you will get - the same amount of stir-fry and soup comes out either way.
The duck comes out on a trolley pushed by the skilled waiter who carves off swathes of duck meat and skin dexterously from the whole bird for you to place in the pancakes with sauce and a little bit of greenery. It tastes wonderful.
The stir-fry is nice. Too many beanshoots for some.
The soup is almost unpalatable. Reminds me of dishwater with duckbones in it.
I usually go with a couple of friends and we enjoy a 6 pack of beer each while enjoying our duck meal.
Best Peking duck in Melbourne! Bookings are essential and you must preorder your duck over the phone. It's recommended 1 duck between 2 people and they will cook it three ways. The first course is duck pancakes. They present you with a fresh, glistening Peking duck and slice the duck infront of you - the skin is deliciously crispy and the meat is so succulent. Heaven! You probably get about 10 pieces in the first course. They take away the duck carcas to prepare your second course. The second course is shredded duck stir-fried with beansprouts. During the second course you can order extra dishes and I'd recommend ordering a serve of rice as it doesn't come standard with your stirfry. The third course is a simple soup, which they have made using the bones of your duck. Byo is also accepted. We normally go to the bottle shop next door to grab a 6-pack of beers. The interior is a little rundown and space is minimal but that does not reflect the quality of their food. highly recommend!

Two friends and I revisited Old Kingdom recently, pre-ordered one duck, added a beef stir fry with mushroom and cashew nuts, BYO a bottle of Rose, overall very nice experience, with just few notes to add.1) the duck shredding boy could have taken off more meat from the duck: we absolutely loved the duck but found it not enough. A neighboring table with also three people apparently had a lot more meat out of one duck than we did and we couldn't help wondering why. Next time, definitely ask for more to be pieced down. 2) can you believe it? if you want to ask for some extra wrapping dough, it's one dollar per one thin thin sheet. It's just a piece of thin dough, no idea how come!!! 3) finally, just a suggestion: we asked for a duck skeleton to take away and noticed very few people do so. You just GOT to ask for at least one considering how much meat is still there on the bones. With the meaty bone, you can either make more duck crepes at home or throw the whole thing in a pot to make soup or porridge. Isn't that wonderful???

Food tasted fantastic, started with the traditional pancakes, duck, cucumber etc. Then on the second course of leftover duck with rice and bean shoots (so tasty) then the final course of soup. I don't know what the rest of the menu is like, but if it's anything like their duck I'm in!

Peking Duck opposite of big clock. Went for dinner which my friend booked a table with four peking ducks. The duck skins was so crispy and was a good match with the pancake wraps. Unfortunately the duck meat itself wasn't contain any flavor. The other dishes were just ok, nothing too special. One thing which a bit disappointing me but I think was fair which was you hardly to get another duck. Still, great place for good peking duck.
Peking beef (yes beef, not duck) is the standout here. Jam it on some fried rice - incredible. We've been here three times in a month now. Love it.
I hope you like duck... This restaurant is unique because it specializes in Peking Duck. Book ahead of time as it gets crowded and make sure to order enough ducks to feed the entire group - I usually order 2 for a party of 4-5. Initially the duck gets cut up into several pieces in order for you to use it as a filler for the crepes that are provided. The meat gets placed inside the crepe and you put cucumber plus some sweet plum sauce along with it - an incredible dish in its own.
You also get duck served with bean sprouts and broth soon after which taste great as well. This is one of Melbourne's premium Chinese restaurants so it isn't cheap but then again not too many places serve duck like they do here. Its close proximity to public transport is an added bonus.
Good Duck. This is very good peking duck however I feel the standards have slipped ever since one of the main family members passed away. The service is attentive and atmosphere a little crazy. This place is so popular that everyone is crammed in to a claustrophobic room. The duck flavour is good however the skin needs to be more crispy. Whilst I appreciate the very thin pancakes I think for me they need to be more thick to hold the duck and sauce in place. I like the 3 courses, and surprisingly the duck soup at the end. Funny little Chinese restaurant specialising in 'duck three ways'. In fact I think they're quite surprised if you ask for the à la carte menu. Mr Lee 'not Bruce and not Jet' is very amusing if you've not heard his script before, and very professional with a knife. The duck was really good kicking off with crispy duck with pancakes followed by shredded duck with beansprouts and then finally a duck soup. You have to have quite a strong stomach to want to eat the meat in it but the soup itself is really nice. Definitely a place to take visitors to Melbourne for some local colour.

Ditto...go the duck.. The peking duck pancakes are definitley the go; the meat is succulent and the skin is nicely browned.... but I have to say, the duck stir-fry (which is just beanshoots and a few pieces of duck) isn't that exciting, neither is the duck soup.
Table service was quick and the waiters will make you feel guilty if you leave any duck on the plate!! What a sin!

Because Old Kingdom fries their duck like no other restaurants, crispy skin with the meat still soft and tender, not to mention they don't let the duck go to waste,
Yes, they'll cook the remaining duck meat that you ordered into stir fry dish with beansprout and other veges. Once that's done, they put the remaining into a HUGE bowl and make a soup out of it.

We love Peking Duck here. It's worth risking my mum's heart problem to get up those stairs and enjoy the experience of sitting around our massacred bird, drinking Pinot and arguing over you like the soup or stir fry duck better (obviously the pancakes win hands down).
Absolutely stunning. The 1st time I ate here I had no idea there were 3 delicious duck courses. Last night I paced myself & enjoyed every single morsel. For duck lovers, this is the Asian Melbourne pinnacle.
Love duck. If you love duck and have not been to the Old Kindom you should be ashamed. Call and pre-book the duck - it costs $55 and is too much for two people. They carve it into a three course meal and you can BYO wine (bottle shop next door). One tip - if they try to seat you upstairs in the right corner near the kitchen - ask for another table. It rattles!
Tasty Duck. Very Tasty duck, would recommend just a fraction more that I expected at $55. Friend had Mongolian Beef was good.
I roll out of here, I'm so full. I have a soft spot for this place since it was after eating here that my husband proposed to me. We absolutely adore the duck (you need to advise them you will have duck when you ring to book a table). I have had one duck between 3 girls before and I found it to be enough (not as full as I have been) but 2 ducks between 3 people is just too much. Pity they don't do half ducks. It is the sort of place you go to once or twice a year (as you can sorta get a bit sick of duck). BYO alcohol and it works out to be a relatively cheap night out with great food.
Good value but order more food. Couldnt wait to try the duck banquet here after reading the reviews and i have to say food was great - BUT - make sure you oder additional dishes - just the duck banquet was not enough. The peking duck pancakes were generous but the beanshoot stir fry was very small and just followed by a simple broth
Nice Peking Duck!. Have been here a few times, all from being invited by someone else (never my own initiatives). Basically the main specialties (and as far as I've heard you have to pre-order) is the Peking duck, where they'll slice the duck in front of you, and show you how to wrap it up in the skin if you've never done it before (or forgot how to), and then take the rest of the duck and make stir fry with beanshoot with the rest of the meat, and then finally a soup with salty vegetable using the duck carcass. The peking duck is always crispy, I love the duck skin. It's nice to chew the wing as well, very crispy (eventhough there's hardly any meat). Restaurant is always full, so booking is a must! 1 duck (3-way) is $55 as at May-2010.
We've been to old kingdom a few times now and never once have I walked out unsatisfied. The duck is close to if not the best in melbourne. Staff are nice and tentative. Did I mention the duck...
Simple duck. After reading all the great reviews the Old Kingdom had, and being local to the area we had to try the house specialty - duck. Having eaten duck in many different forms at a varity of restaurants in Melbourne and Brisbane we really had high expectations. Sadly these were not met. All the other reviews are correct - 3 courses, pancakes, stirfry and soup; $55 for 2 (we shared between 4), cash only, staff OK, venue matches area. The duck is duck - not bad, not great. Satisfying enough. Still yet to beat Marco Polo at Treasury Casino signature dish - Peking Duck.

Damn good duck!. 8/10
Service - despite what I've read on other forums about the service, it was very good. Always friendly, and reasonably attentive given it was a busy Saturday night. The Chef who cuts the duck for you is quite a character and keeps patrons reasonably entertained with his cheeky humour.
Food - well, all we tried was the duck (you need to pre-order when you book). It was excellent - maybe even too much for two people. First course - duck pancakes - excellent. The duck was tender with a perfectly crisp skin. Second course - duck stir fry - beautiful, not a heavy stir fry , just bits of duck with bean shoots. Plain and all we felt like after the rich pancake servings. Finally, duck soup which was again nice and light, yet very tasty (was a tad too garlicky for my likings but this is just a personal preference).
Value - excellent. Under $60 for two for a huge meal.
Ambience - a bit dark and dingy but it seemed to suit the the place and the area!
Highly recommended (but still second to Quanjude!)
We are vego but we didn't realize this place is known for it's duck! Everyone around us was seriously having the duck. I guess highly reccomended for the duck!!!
Peking duck and nothing else.... Of course people come here just for the duck. Maybe it was heaps better in the past, but I just wasn't impressed, having been to quanjude recently. The server sliced the poor bird in thick chunks, it wasn't possible to fit one into a pancake. He looked disinterested, almost inanimate, while performing his routine. Artless, clumsy, pedestrian. Duck broth could have passed off as dirty dishwater. Duck with bean shoots looked and tasted monotonous. Good for a one-off experience, but I probably won't come back, especially seeing as there's nothing much else on the menu that's passable. Tiger prawns with garlic just okay. Not pricey, so that's a selling point. Cash only too.
Peking duck is without doubt the best in Melbourne! Always a good view too of hot boys!
Great for classic Peking Duck, served with a bit of theatre. Always busy and always great value. Bottle shop next door is handy too. Cash only, no cards.

Yummy but.... Absolutely sinfully yummy! Book in advance, they'll ask how many ducks you're ordering. Usually 2-3ppl per duck. Be prepared to be squeezed into a small room like sardines.
It's a 3 course meal, 1st is the classic duck wrap, the yummy highlight, very very good. My main complaint is - they don't seem to slice the duck thoroughly nor neatly.
2nd course is a duck meat stir-fry with beansprouts, it's alright u might wanna order steamed rice to go with it. With bigger groups, the portion of this 2nd course may be insufficient and not really proortionate to the number of ducks pre-ordered. Maybe this is a tactic to make us order more mains off the menu to fill us up.
3rd course is a light consommé soup of duck bones with salted vegetables, tasty. The other dishes and mains served here aren't good, just stick to the duck.
These are my gripes about this place: they don't cut the duck completely; and the pieces are cut haphazardly; sometimes there isn't enough wrap-skins served too; diners are crammed into every inch of space in the joint so dining here can be a noisy and somewhat stressful experience.
It feels like they're focused on money-making & getting the volume of patrons in & out.
All that said, I will still prolly come back again cos the peking duck wrap is just too yummy and the price is somewhat reasonable.
1* off for the fact that they don't take card, which is ridiculous..you have to do bank transfer! Seriously! Anyway, $2 corkage is great, duck was crispy and moist, the bean shoot stir-fry is worth it itself, so is the soup..anyway, it's been 11 years since I first visited and it's still as good.
The best Peking duck in town. Reasonable price come with quality food. Must try this out if you are Chinese food lovers 😋
I came back here many times to enjoy the true taste of Peking Duck, which only can be sought in the whole city.
The last time been here was quite a long waiting for seats and the food was kind of more oily than previous. Otherwise, there was nothing to complain about…

Duck was crispy but could have done with more pancakes for the Peking duck as part of the duck set menu ($65). Order extra noodles ($8) if you're hungry to go with noodles that come with the set menu. Gets busy so best to book.

you can get a whole course meal from ordering just the one duck - theyll utilise every bit of the duck and serve it up for you! no wastage!
