Review Old Kingdom Chinese Restaurant - Fitzroy

1* off for the fact that they don't take card, which is ridiculous..you have to do bank transfer! Seriously! Anyway, $2 corkage is great, duck was crispy and moist, the bean shoot stir-fry is worth it itself, so is the soup..anyway, it's been 11 years since I first visited and it's still as good.

The best Peking duck in town. Reasonable price come with quality food. Must try this out if you are Chinese food lovers 😋

I came back here many times to enjoy the true taste of Peking Duck, which only can be sought in the whole city. The last time been here was quite a long waiting for seats and the food was kind of more oily than previous. Otherwise, there was nothing to complain about…

Set menu of pecking duck is so cheap and delicious. Love pecking duck with pancakes, spicy chili with bean sprouts, and duck soup. The best restaurant of pecking duck in my heart. ❤️
Jeff Beatton
Duck was crispy but could have done with more pancakes for the Peking duck as part of the duck set menu ($65). Order extra noodles ($8) if you're hungry to go with noodles that come with the set menu. Gets busy so best to book.

old kingdom dishing out an old classic - peking duck - and they do it well! you can get a whole course meal from ordering just the one duck - theyll utilise every bit of the duck and serve it up for you! no wastage! super tasty and speedy service! you will need to book ahead to make sure you get a seat! really great for family gatherings as they can cater for large groups! peking duck at its finest!

The Peking duck was pretty average for the price we paid. Tasted more like roast duck deep fried. But the other food we ordered was decent. I wouldn't go there for Peking duck again !

Over the decades some things change and some stay the same. In the case of Old Kingdom the latter is true, and the food is still amazing - albeit served in a different location.

Our last experience was with takeaway during iso. The duck banquet is generous and good value for money. The Peking duck as ever is some of the best in Melbourne.

We ordered directly from the restaurant in lieu of ordering through Door Dash with their high mark ups and cut of the restaurant's profits. After picking up our order and getting home we noticed that the bean shoot and duck dish was missing. A quick call to the restaurant resulted in a staff member driving over to our house an delivering the dish post-haste.

Will definitely continue to support the restaurant. Thanks team!

Less atmosphere than its Smith St predecessor but nonetheless a worthwhile visit if you’re craving Peking Duck. It seems they have hundreds out the back of the restaurant, hanging out waiting to be devoured with a lash of hoisin and baton of cucumber, all wrapped in a thin warm pancake. The follow up dishes of duck/bean sprout and soup are also satisfying. You can take or leave the rest of the menu as the duck rightly rules here.

This place never disappoint with their Peking duck. My parents always request to come here at least once whenever they visit melbs. There’s unlimited soup as well and I’m actually in love with it! Just rmb to book a place before going to the restaurant cause it’s always packed!

The Peking Duck is a beauty. Served with some pomp and flair and appropriately so because it’s excellent. It’s bright, busling and sometimes full on here. But, it certainly works.

Fast service, delightful food, Peking duck is def worth it ❤️

UNREAL DUCK. best I’ve ever had. Will come again.

Cash only is the only downer

Best place for duck. Lunch specials are great too. Don't expect VIP service during peak hours in any restaurant. I would recommend to anyone

Can’t resist the peking duck here. Ordered 3 courses peking duck with extra noodle. Every course just done perfectly.

Really recommended!

Old Kingdom recently moved to Richmond and they’re still doing excellent Peking Duck. Crispy, juicy and delicious. It was hard to get the waiter’s attention during the busy period so it can feel like you’re not getting the attention you deserve at a restaurant but they make up for it with their delicious no fuss food.

We ordered for 3 whole pecking duck and made the rest of the duck into stir fry bean sprout, duck fried rice and ramen. I could say that the bean sprout and fried rice is AMAZING! Didn’t really enjoyed the ramen since it was very dry and hard. We were in a pax of 7 and brought some leftover home. Quite generous with their portion.

I swear I can eat a whole pecking duck banquet by myself at old kingdom..... tried their new location and I am still in love. It was busy the night my friends and I were here so food came out fairly slow, but when food did arrive we understood why. Food was so fresh and jooooooocy. A place that will never let me down.

We walked in during peak hour service and were seated next to a large group of friends. I noticed that we were to dine on the same table to this group due to the large amount of people to dining space ratio. We had to wait quite a while to be given our menu due to how busy the place was. We felt like we were forgotten as we waited for a staff member to be available. The Peking duk however tasted amazing. We loved it. it had the right amount of savoury to the meat and crisp to the skin. Overall, we would return to this restaurant another time when it is not as busy to see whether there can be an improvement to the service.

The peking duck is amazing! Highly recommended and good value for 3 course meal. However due to busy crowd and lack in communication, orders can come out wrong. Overall was great place to dine, however during peak hours can be extremely loud and you may be sitting at the table for more than 15 minutes before you can order.
Mi.
Mouth watering peking duck. I also loved their fried tofu dish. It is a must try besides the famous roast duck. Service could be slow in peak hours however staffs were nice and smiling whenever we needed something. Wish we could have more cucumber and spring onions instead of paying extra for $2 however considered the reasonable price they put on the whole duck with stir fried bean sprouts and soup ($58 for 1 combo and $8 extra if you want to add noodles)
Eat Good Melbourne
Old Kingdom serves up excellent value for money and deliciously crisp peking duck. For $65 you can get a whole peking duck, duck soup and stirfried vegies and duck. All more than enough to feed a table of two.
Liz
Over priced & just average. 2 very thin pancakes, duck was fatty & luke warm. For what you pay, you receive very little duck, a few slices to put in your pancake, tiny shreds for your gluteny bean sprout stir fry (yeah if you want noodles or other vegetables in your duck stir fry that costs extra) & a couple of peices in your duck soup (it's more like greasy hot water with a slight duck flavour). Kinda sad if this is considered Melbourne's best - trust me, there's better.

Decided to try this restaurant for mothersday due to the high ratings and good reviews but found it to be the exact opposite, we ordered 6 dishes in total including the peking duck, The service was very poor with them forgetting 2 of our dishes and bringing our duck to the wrong table so we had to wait an extra 20 minutes for another one, the overall taste of the dishes is nothing special considering the price you pay , would not go back.
MariaaTrann
Crispy duck skin that melts in your mouth with each bite. Recommend adding 1 x noodles per couple to your stir fry bean sprouts. Old Kingdom is now opened 7 days a week. 🙌🏼🙌🏼 make sure to book ahead and confirm it!

Amidst all the modern eateries around Fitzroy is this traditional Chinese restaurant serving authentic Peking duck. We decided to get takeaway duck fried noodles from here and it was very nice. They gave us two boxes - one for the noodles to keep them fresh and crispy, and one for the sauce with cooked bean sprouts and duck meat. It was flavourful and the texture of the noodles was great. Portion size was very decent for the price!
Makan2Melbourne
Love the peking duck. They cut the first duck in front of us, making a good presentation. The duck was served with pancakes on the side. Although it was a bit hard to separate the pancakes, but it was the perfect way to eat the peking duck. The skin was crispy, the sauce added a sweetness to it, and the cucumber was a refreshing touch. The other dishes like noodle and soup were also tasty.

The food is nothing to be complained about, however the service was slow and not very thoughtful. Granted, it was a Saturday night and there were about 5-6 table with only two staff upstairs. But e ordered food and drink and the drink didn’t come out until after we have finished the meal. Also got a wrong drink too. Service could have been better.

4.5
I’ve heard good things about Old Kingdom and the last time I wandered down here, it was closed. Today was my lucky day! FYI, during the week they only open for lunch if they have bookings. So my mate and I shared a duck and first round is pancakes. How I love thee! Plenty of crunchy skin and tissue thin pancakes with some cucumber and a dollop of hoi sin sauce. Amazing! Second course they stir fry some of the duck with bean shoots. Third course is a broth. I love the fact that they use all pieces of the duck - and it’s us that reaps the rewards. We also ordered some of the baked scallop shells and they were also top notch. Why haven’t I been here before?? I’ll be back again soon - for sure!

Had a Peking Duck for 2 person.
It was my first time to have peking duck and it was a good experience for the first timer.
The first set(duck with pancakes) was my favourite as the staff sliced the roasted duck into pieces in front of the customer.

Completely rubbish, totally humiliated "Peking duck",can I give negative star? flavour was like fried duck,I had Peking duck hundred times, the worst I had in my life. we ordered 2 ducks because every served duck was half missing. 6:30pm peak hour, only 4 tables in the ground floor, upper level was empty. Never never came back.

My family stopped by Old Kingdom following an event to try some peking duck for the first time! I was so excited to finally dine at a restaurant that specialized in duck and I was not disappointed!

Interior: 3/5
The interior is simple and very asian-style, however given the location and the family style restaurant environment I observed, i understand interior may be the least of their problems and isn’t something that would take away from their delicious food!

Service: 5/5
Definitely a highlight, staff were attentive, speedy and helpful. Food was cut and distributed to our family at the table, this type of personal service is rare at such a reasonable price these days so it’s something i really appreciated.
The last dish, the duck soup, we asked for a takeaway box to take the rest home, and the chef upon hearing this left to the kitchen for quite some time, returning with a new box of duck soup, saying that ours is cold now and this one is better - super thankful for such hospitality!

Food:
Honestly the only thing you need to order here is the $59 duck banquet which will leave 2 patrons stuffed to the brim! Every dish was so delicious, the duck skin was extremely crispy and the crepes were so thin. Every single dish had nothing to fault.

Overall i highly HIGHLY recommend old kingdom for any duck cravings, you won’t be disappointed by the food and definitely by the service! Thank you for having us!

Old Kingdom in Fitzroy. Normally it is a good place for Peking duck. But I came in alone during lunch time. Very quite and only a large table customer. Skipped the duck and go ahead with their Singapore noodle. Their food is just average nothing special. Next time I will order the duck then.
Kylie
After going to the one in Surrey Hills, I had really high expectations for this one and it didn't disappoint. Although the place was more empty, the food was still delicious. Compared to Surrey Hills, they served more portions of Peking Duck, so you'll definitely get your money's worth. The cripsy noodles and fried rice were also delicious. I prefer this place to the other one.

Loved the Lo-fi vibe of this place. Promptly seated on arrival. Ordered the duck specialty of the house.
Came out quickly and carved at the table. Served with the usual accompaniments .
Duck was good. Followed by a broth that was made from bones and a stir fry egg noodles both of which were not very good.
Having said that, I would go back and just have the duck again

Overall really disappointed with my visit here. Having been to old kingdom in surrey hills I thought that the duck quality would be the same, but this time around it was dry and tougher than usual - I suspect it was leftover duck from the day before. But the stir fry was still yum so that’s a plus.

Not only that, the service was pretty awful. We didn’t sit down until 8 for a 7:30 booking and there only seemed to be 2 waiters spread amongst multiple large tables - So although they were doing the best they could, getting there attention was very difficult. I think the best word to describe this place would be disorganised.

I believe the food quality overall for old kingdom would be quite decent (seeing as the ratings are so good) but they didn’t deliver this time around.

- disappointed bloated foodie :(
Jee Ong
Tasty tasty tasty! Wouldn't go anywhere else for duck. Only downside is the place is a little cramped. If you get the usual 3 course meal you will definitely not leave this place hungry! The wait staff are quite entertaining and seem to enjoy serving duck. If you get served by the owner, don't be surprised to get force fed duck while he cuts it in front of you!

Went for a friend’s birthday on a Friday night for dinner. If you have a group of people, I highly recommend you book as they get extremely busy. We ordered three of the set duck menu which included Peking duck pancakes, stir fried noodles with bean shoots and a duck and vegetable soup. The pancakes were the best I’ve ever had, the duck was fragrant and had crispy skin, they even carve the duck in front of you. We ordered extra noodle. You get three choices- crispy, normal and ramen. We got all three and my favourite was the ramen version as I felt like it had more flavour. The soup was a warming broth with bits of duck, tofu and various vegetables. Think of those chicken soups you’d have when you’re feeling under the weather. The service was really fast and the lady was so kind to us. Will definitely go again and try what else they have to offer.

Don’t hesitate, just go!

This place ticks all the boxes if you want a dingy/chic restaurant that serves the best Roast Duck three ways for $60 - Perfect for groups as long as you book ahead.

(And it’s BYO)

The venue itself has two floors, looks dirty and the tables are set out with no order. Getting to the stairs to go to the toilet - (through the kitchen prep area) is an adventure in itself. The service is lousy and paying for your meal is absolute chaos.

All that being said, I don’t care, they don’t care, I’ll keep coming back with my big groups of people because the price and food is just that good.

Love you Old Kingdom. Don’t ever change
Alan Tse
An oldie but a goodie... as my friends say, no friends when you’re eating Peking Duck. First off, cash only. However, no corkage for BYO.

Always the same here, 1 duck between 2 people, don’t bother ordering anything else. You should get approximately 5 pancakes, 1 leg, 1 wing. Followed by duck noodles, followed by duck soup.
Kimmy Liew
Ordered the standard $58 Banquet. Two ducks. First was sliced right in front of us. Which was quite a lot in picture. The second duck came out pre-sliced, but lesser in portion. Then the bean sprout dish came out, with so little duck it isn’t even one duck’s worth of meat. Then the soup came out. It didn’t taste like two ducks were boiled in the soup. Nor did it have meat of one duck in it. It tasted like MSG. I had to order an extra fried rice because we were left hungry. Complained to the staff, got another serving of bean sprout that this time around looked like it’s a duck worth of meat. But at this time it was 9:15pm. Curious if they actually hide duck meat at the back of the kitchen and do not actually serve all. I feel cheated. The cashier gave reasons such like it was very busy, everyone wanted ducks, the ducks this time was smaller etc. get your money worth of Peking duck in surrey hills or simon’s. You’ll be well fed there.
Hungry Little Dinosaur
Oh my goodness! The duck! Soup - amazing! Duck- amazing! I think I love it because it’s such an economical way of using one duck. Wasn’t too keen on other dishes, but really you should just come and have the duck!
Natsfoodadventures
The best place to get peking duck! The meat is juicy and tender whilst the skin is super crunchy! Been here a few times and left every time with a happy stomach. Would definitely recommend this place especially if you're after peking duck!

The waiters were efficient but felt cold. Seems like an effort to attract their attention to make a request for things like rice, extra teas and etc.

Food were good, the duck slicing on the table were quite a shield, but felt a whole lot of the duck missing.
PNH
Delicious Peking duck! Book before you come in. We were lucky to have been seated since they were quite busy, even on Tuesday night. Can't wait to be back here again. :)
Jess
Had the calamari and Mongolian beef and both were great tasting and a good portion. The staff are very friendly and helpful. A great “cheap and cheerful”. It is BYO but there is a bottle shop next door.
Lady In Bread
Yessssssss
You have to come here for the simple, juicy pleasures of duck. Duck, duck, and ladies and gentleman....more duck. Upstairs you can squeeze about 20 people over two tables, pop your bib on, and get busy. It’s steamy and stuffy, and can get loud, and fun. Duck soup, roast duck, duck pancakes love a duck. It’s delicious. Hot. Fast. And won’t pinch your pockets. I love a messy, boozy table with friends, and here is a favourite of mine.
Duyen Nguyen
Peking duck lacked flavour, they also only gave us half a duck and then took the rest away... Soup came out lukewarm & tofu in the soup was still cold.

Very disappointed, given the high rating.
Kevin Peng
Got the whole duck 3 course meal. Peking duck was really nice but then the following two dishes were just average and a bit on the bland side
Keeping It Real
After reading other reviews, I had high hopes for this place. Tried it twice now and can say without a doubt that unfortunately, it is pretty average. First time I ordered sweet & sour fish - some of the fish was fishy tasting and not fresh, but the sweet & sour sauce was decent. Also ordered the Timorese chicken which was fresh but lacking in flavour. Second time I had the Peking fish - same issue with the fish quality. The sauce was nice - just not enough of it. Partner ordered lemon duck - the lemon sauce was terrible. They completely forgot our steamed rice and we had to wait 20 mins longer than first advised for our takeaway pickup. Not happy. Certainly doesn’t live up to the reviews - 3 out of 5 stars (max).

The best for duck - that’s simply it. Simple but great food & service - ive tried a few in melbourne but always return to this place. Best duck (& im not even a duck fan)

Eat_today_diet_tomorrow
We came here to try pecking ducks. The place has 2 floors we sat on the second floor it was a bit stuffy. The staff was really nice.

The pecking duck was good but other dishes were mediocre
Danielle Nguyen
One of the best Peking duck that I have had. The meat was so lean and the skin was crispy that it doesn’t get sickening. My family came here last night and we received great service even though it was quite busy. Food was great because it felt like they were home cooked dishes and the ambience made us feel that way as well. The dishes that stood out to me was of course the Peking duck, salted Calamari and Fried Tofu 👌
Skellie
Didn’t like it here. Their serving sizes were 30% too small, especially for rice and vegetables, considering their high prices. Also, the meals came out very staggered, and the rice came out a full 15 minutes after the food, even with asking about it twice.
Richard Tran
Main dish this restuarant focuses on is peking duck, so they dont serve too much of a variety but their duck is tender and the wrap, sauce along with duck is delicious, no complaints with this place and will be back again c:

It has been such a long time since I last laid my eyes on a delectable piece of Peking duck and seeing that it is the holiday season after all, I did not want to miss the opportunity to stuff myself silly. Having heard peeps rave about this restaurant, we ducked (haha geddit?) here after I clocked off for the day. The restaurant has very narrow walkways considering that they must have tried to squeeze as many tables possible into the vicinity. Service is efficient despite the minimal space between tables and diners.

Ratio Decidendi: Life comes full circle following the sale and decline of Simon’s Peking Duck under new management. Pending the return of Simon “the duck nazi” Lay with what would be his second encore, the original Old Kingdom would appear to be the go-to place for your Peking duck fix. It’s never been quite the same without Simon roaming the tables and remonstrating with his cleaver while barking at customers about how their spring onion and cucumber is in the wrong position, but when it comes to the duck, they’ve managed to do a much better job of maintaining the standards set by former patriarch.
Melbfoodie
Consistently good and delicious Chinese food! Definitely better atmosphere and service at this outlet. A regular family favourite. Great place to take visitors.
Bruno De Michelis
Not only the best Peking duck in Melbourne, but excellent service and BYOW at $1.80 per person. Top quality food at reasonable prices and many specialties, including deboned stuffed quail and fresh scallops....I wsill certainly return!
Jesskaar
I don't really understand the hype around Old Kingdom. I thought its food was average to say the least. The duck and pancakes were both cold when they came out, with the duck also being a little soggy. Very disappointing. I felt also that the spring onion and cucumber batons were inadequate for the amount of duck, and were also dry from having been prepped too far in advance. When I compare this to my recent experience of Peking duck at Flowerdrum, this is all the more disappointing.
AllyBelly
Great restaurant to visit for some Peking duck. The good thing is that you don't need to call ahead to reserve a duck as they usually have plenty in stock. So if you just happen to be in the area and feel like having duck, chances are they will have one for you.
Our duck has crispy skin and was juicy on the inside and not hard and dry like some other Peking duck we've had at other restaurants. The pancakes are also warm which we preferred. The other dishes we ordered were also delicious were the golden tofu and kang Kong. The tofu were light on the inside with a nice crispy skin.
One duck is a good amount to share amongst 4 people to ensure everyone gets to enjoy a few pieces and still have room to try other dishes.
Christine
Old Kingdom- the place to go for Peking Duck given if you want bang for your buck. Serving a full duck with three courses- pancakes, stir-fry and soup for roughly $60, what can go wrong? This feast easily feeds three people. Arriving at Old Kingdom, you will realise they do not aim to be fancy and premium. The restaurant does not aim to glamorise and pride itself in quality service. While the duck is flavourful, the clarity of flavours and crispiness cannot compare to other more crispy and crunchy outlets or origins. They aim to deliver affordable and close to home authentic Chinese food. It’s authentic cheap speciality food. Fork out and lick your lips (LML)!
🍴🍴🍴🍴/5

Down the street of Smith St Fitzory, Old Kingdom continues to live on over the decades with the similar wood interiors and small spaces. The proximity from the entrance and exits to tables is not far apart. The restaurant is lively with large families, friends and chatter. While other Fitzory restaurants are beautifying their restaurants- this place keeps it super casual. So don’t dress up.

The main course is the duck and it is delicious. Your eyes will be beaming when you watch the staff cut the duck in front of your eyes. The Peking duck is fatty, tender, and flavourful and with the scallion/onion it gives the dish a bit of a kick. The crepes are soft, not sweet, and are perfectly portioned to the cuts of meat. For the sauce, Old Kingdom keeps it simple with the hoisin sauce which is fairly sweet (still yummy) so do not be too generous when coating your duck.

Second course is the stir fried beansprouts stir-fry with the left over duck and you can pay a little extra for some noodles. This dish can go wrong if it is too salty and if the duck is dry. And Old Kingdom does it just right!

Lastly, you will be served with salted vegetable soup combined with the flavours of the duck as well. It’s the perfect way to finish off your meal during this cold weather.

If you’re thinking of trying Peking duck for the first time or want a bang for your buck then this is the place. It’s cash only- so come prepared. Just a tip there’s a bottle shop next door so maybe pop by before coming.

Firstly the waiter was just standing there and totally ignoring us when we came in. After we finished the first dish, no one came to take the plate away for nearly 20mins, we asked the waiter about other dishes but all he answered was "ok". Until we finished the main course and the duck soup, the Soft Shell Crab ( should be served together with the main course) was just served, I assume they want us treat it as a dessert?? We waited 45 mins just for one dish and the services are terrible, even we asked to have the bill, still waited 15 mins. We were the first one came to the restaurant, but they served others' dishes much quicker than ours, the table next to us already left when we were waiting our bills. I will give a negative if I can. Flavous are soso, HORRIBLE SERVICES, go to Simon's Dcuk, which is much better for the flavour and services as you pay the same price. Don't come to this restaurant. By the way, they only accept cash, I think everyone know what is that mean for a restaurant.
Miss_ZXC
So tiny place and the attitude of the staff is not good.
They didn't give the full duck, maybe they eat some. The duck pancake is cold and tastes hard. The duck is not hot either.
The Mongolia beef is too sweet and not too much beef inside.
Anyway I won't come again
Hangry Horace
Food was a real let down. We ordered the 3 course peking duck meal. The first course was the Peking duck which was sliced infront of us. It was okay but a little oily and the pancakes and accompaniments were meh. The second course was the worst. The noodles were hard and the sauce was uninspiring. There was so little duck in the dish. The last dish was a soup and the portion was miserable with a few duck bones in it. Service was also unfriendly. I won't be returning!
Anh Nguyen
Really disappointing, simon's is so much better.

The pancakes were cold and flavorless and they only gave us just enough for the meat, not even one extra for the wings. The cucumber and onions were tiny and the duck wasn't really crispy and a little dry. I didn't really enjoy the noodles either, the duck meat in it was cooked beyond recognition. Only the soup was really good, but it made me quite thirsty afterwards, so maybe it was full of msg?

Won't be coming back. I was embarrassed to bring friends here.
Wandering Ella
There's always been a running debate in my circle of friends: which one is better - Old Kingdom or Simon's? As I've never had Old Kingdom's Peking duck before, I never participated in the convo. Now though, I can safely say I am pro-Old Kingdom 100%.

The staff was super friendly which took us al aback because we're used to snappy service at traditional Chinese joints! The Peking Duck with 'pancakes' were the absolute star of my dinner. Thinly cut, perfectly cooked meat and super crisp skin - I liked how tender the duck was! I'm a picky duck eater because I can't stand the gamey smell of some prepared ducks but Old Kingdom's ducks were just awesome. The noodles and veggies didn't have a lot of flavour, and whilst the soup was quite good; it just triggered my MSG intolerance and I felt quite strange for a while. But I will definitely come back for the Peking Duck. So good!
RoamingEats
Been waiting to come try the popular duck banquet of 3 courses. Firstly you get roll your own pancakes with fresh slices they carve from a whole roast duck at your table. Skin was super crispy and meat was very succulent! Sadly aromatic spice flavours were missing and our pancakes were cold and spongy. We opted for noodles for an extra $8 to bulk up our meal and it was passable. Next came the soup which was also average. Looking at other reviewer's photos of the Surrey Hills branch, it seems that branch has more finesse.

I have never thought abt i can try such scrumptious Chinese Peking Duck in Mel. For additional cucumber and spring onion are free but $10 is required for additional handmade pancake (actually it's more like crepe)which is really light, you don't wanna stop eating. There are 3 courses for a duck, including peking duck, fried some duck meat with sprouts and soup which is made with the bone cage of the duck, it costs $58. extra noodles can be added in the fried one, $8 is required. It was quite good for snapchat or video users coz they will peel the whole duck in front of you, it's time to get more 'like'. But be careful coz some oil will split out when they are peeling off the duck. Hope it may help you. enjoy it:)

Peking duck is one of the famous recipes in Chinese style. Oldkingdom has the greatest peking duck in Melbourne. There is 3 course meal with one duck. Ut consists of the duck, soup and noodles which costs $66. The soup was tasty and the duck was so nice!

You have to reserve the duck when you are having reservation for the table.

Had enjoyable dinner there!
Pamali Fonseka
Never really liked duck before but I have totally changed my mind about it now. So good! Staff was friendly but they charged $10 extra for extra pancakes which we didn't expect. Still had a good time.
Sing Chee
Their Peking duck set menu is real delicious and is worth it. Also with good costumes service they helped you cut up the duck as well and their crispy noodles is crunchy and tasty

Come back after 5-6 years. Walked in at a sat night lucky us got a table straight away at 7:30 something if I remember right. 2 of us ordered 1 duck set to share. Good size for 2 over 3 course. Waiter will slice the duck on table! However the pancake was barely warm or cold. Friendly service and nice duck just the package really let down the whole experience.
A Black Sheep
If you are looking for a nice environment for a sit down meal, this may not be exactly you are after. But I can guarantee the food, especially the duck will not let you down. The restaurant is not very spacious and the decor and furniture is a bit old if I may. However, the duck is to die for. Remember to preorder though. If you don't , you may not be able to get one when you walk in. That's how popular their duck is. Each duck comes with a serve or rice and soup. The two of us stuffed our faces and still got quite a bit to take home. If you are a Pecking duck fan, this is the place you should go.
Duongcool1997
Pretty good duck, skin is crispy and tasty
A whole duck for $58 is a very cheap price with this quality duck must say!
The only think wasnt happy about is the service, staff ( worker) is abit rude but i will leave 4* here
Jeffry
Got a family visit and I brought them to this restaurant. The place is pretty old, but very chinese authentic which makes this place look unique.
The customer service was really good, we had a good time there.
The duck was perfectly cooked, and second course - bean sprout stir fried with duck was really really awesome.
I definitely come back to try other dishes!

What an innovative idea to purchase a single duck and implement it into 3 courses!!! With the value of only being $65 for duck and you can byo that's an instant plus in my books!!!
The quality of the food was spectacular but don't expect to much from atmosphere (as there was no music) and the restaurant was definitely under staffed with no knowledge in basic hospitality skills. Would definitely return to bring a friend for dinner and wine.

Went there with friends for the peking duck set and was very disappointed. Firstly, the parking here is ridiculous. The restaurant itself had the ambience of a food court - functional, loud, and cramped up so close to other diners that your chair backs touched. The service was lacklustre if not downright surly.
We had preordered two ducks between five people. We were served the first duck, finished it, and had to wait another 10 minutes before the next duck was served (and with insufficient pancakes for the second duck I might add). The food was excessively oily (our greens were literally sitting in a pool of oil), the duck tasted deep fried and the soup was so salty that I could not drink it.

Seriously, if you have a craving for good peking duck, don't come here. There are so many other restaurants to better spend your money in. Their Surrey Hills sister restaurant gives more satisfaction.

One of the few establishments in Melbourne that you think of when it comes to peking duck. Peking duck is solid with excellent crispy skin and condiments to match. The stir fry is average and lacked seasoning and you really need to pay the extra to add noodles otherwise there isn't any point. The duck soup was nicely flavored.

Service is what you expect from a Chinese restaurant, not the best, not the worst, but it doesn't need to be. They know the food speaks for themselves and most will be back even if the service isn't their strong point.

Would go again but only to satisfy the Peking duck cravings that ducks around every few months.

It's been ten years since my last visit, the three course set is more or less as I remembered it. The restaurant is a quiet, dimly lit affair that serves its dishes with quiet efficiency. Decent tasting duck, and it's always fun using the pancakes to wrap duck slices fresh off the knife. Don't doubt that there are likely other places that have better roasted duck, but if you're in the area you could do worse than check this out. Caveat: It's been a long while, but I still feel like the duck seemed to be better back then.

The only place I go to when I'm craving pecking duck! Good value for money. $55 for a three course meal and extra $6-8 for noodles in the second dish. I always leave this place satisfied. I can't fault the duck but don't order anything else on the menu. Everything else is average.
Sylvia's POV
Old Kingdom is usually the first place mentioned when recommending Peking Duck. We decided to check out what all the hype was about. We were hesitant about not having booked a table on a Saturday night (8.20 PM). Fortunately, we only had to wait 10 minutes for a table.
We were seated upstairs along with 3 large tables full of people celebrating birthdays. It was peircingly loud. I understand this cannot really be controlled, but this made us want to leave as soon as possible.
The duck was decent tasting, quite oily though. Had a deep-fried taste.
The soup wasn't as fragrant as expected. You could tell the pieces of duck were added after the soup was boiled rather than having the duck pieces boil for flavouring of the soup. Bean shoot stirfry was average. Sweet and sour vegetables were well-cooked. Service was fast considering how busy it was.

Absolutely the worst pecking duck restaurant ever! I am from Beijing, where the pecking duck comes from. First of all, just to be correct. This is not a Chinese restaurant, it is a Vietnamese restaurant. From the first couple pages of the dishes on the menu, you can just tell! Pecking duck is roasted with time and species and specially selected wood, but the duck in this shop is either fried or over heated from some sort of device. Second of all, the waitress can not peel the duck, from the entire duck, she managed to peel off 10 pieces of meat...Uh...NO....etc....

It looks the same. The atmosphere is the same. The food might actually be better in some areas. And that is the way institutions are supposed to be. To be exactly as they have lived in our memories for years and years.

Luckily, the stories I have are from years ago. When, on those particular nights, the waitperson was charming and funny. The only lacking element tonight is the ability of the waitstaff to interact and add that X factor to the meal.

Ten years ago (give or take), I was told about the “duck hangover” in detail and still relive that story to this day.

Easily best Peking Duck in Melbourne so far. We know Simon used to run this place but surprisingly we think this place as at now does taste better than at Simon's.

We did order the duck 3 ways for $58 which we thought was pretty reasonable. The duck was prepared in about 10 mins and cut right at your table, which was indeed a little fun to watch.

The duck meat was absolute yum, the skin was crispy and the meat was juicy and tender. The fat was minimal and the sauce was on point. Though we would appreciate a few more pancakes or if the price for extra pancakes wouldn't be too outrageous ($1 a piece)

The second course was the shredded duck meat with stir-fried beanshoots which was okay if you have it with noodles - Luke despises bean shoots, however, so he had to pick them all out.

The last course was the duck soup which was again great in flavour. The soup was slightly sweet which came from cooked bones and went really well with tofu and duck meat.

Overall, we definitely return the next time we crave for some duck.
Food was amazing! Very reasonable price. I had a duck and noddle(wasn't my type i reckon you'd better choose ramen) also soup! Big potion of food. Really nice i will definitely come back again.

Was highly recommended to come here by friends and Le Boy booked us in for a three course Peking duck dinner at $58 a duck and $8 per serve of extra ramen noodles.

First course: Whole duck served with pancakes, spring onion, cucumber and sauce
This was delicious. Watching our server carve up the duck was also quite entertaining and fascinating to watch

Second course: stir fried beanshoots with shredded duck meat + two extra serves of ramen noodles
Again very delicious, a little over priced at $8 per person for ramen servings that wasn't very much at all.

Third course: salted vegetable and duck soup
Very tasty but quite oily from the roasted duck.

Overall the meal was very satisfying and just right in terms of how full we were. A great deal overall (albeit the extra noodles were a little pricey as we had expected more noodles) But for what it's worth, you are still getting good value at $58/duck for a three course meal.

Service was prompt but the dining layout can be a bit tight to move around. Everyone else appeared to be enjoying themselves too.

If you want a decently priced good old Peking duck feast, this is it! I'm here only for the duck and nothing else.

You pay $58 for a 3-course meal from a whole duck that feeds 2-3 people.

You start off with carved duck slices which you wrap in a thin pancake by yourselves. The skin of the duck is crispy!

Then, you're served stir fry bean shoots/sprouts with the remaining duck meat pulled from the carcass. You have the option to add noodles/ramen to this for an additional $8 per serve, but we find that unnecessary. Less carbs is better :P

Finally, the carcass is used to make a broth/soup, which is the final dish.

Popular then and still popular now. The duck meat is savoury and juicy, the skin is crispy and fatty. Obligatory destination to bring hungry tourist/family/friends. They will be sure to enjoy Old Kingdom's signature peking duck. I will recommend adding extra noodle to the bean sprout and maybe a side of simple vegetable dish. The soup is full of flavour and I love it specially during cold weather.

Gangster AF Peking duck. Get the three main course. Crispy duck as the start bean sprout duck as second and Peking duck soup as the final. Also BYO. 👌🏼

It has lost it's soul .....

I've lost count on how many times we've been here for their Peking Ducks in the last two decades.

Uncle Simon used to own and run this place, not much from the outside, messy, old, plain and dirty, prerequisite of a great traditional Chinese restaurant.

But their Peking Ducks wrapped with their hand-made thin, fluffy/doughy skin is simply one of or the best in Melbourne/Australia even better than Quan Jude in Beijing.

Sadly, it has lost it's soul.

There are other traditional Chinese fares, but stick with their Peking Ducks if you are eating there.
Nga Truong
Over rating now. I visited Old Kingdom today and so disappointed with the food and the services. The services is too slow. The food is average. Nothing special now.

Who are we kidding, we were all here for the ducks, and beautiful ducks we had! I live just next door, and my parents won't stop telling me about it.

Just order the ducks guys. Why else would you come here?
Patersani
Quack quack quack, we came here for the duck banquet and it delivered. With a group of 6 hungry males we walked out more than happy after the banquet. The meal included the crispy Peking duck served in pancakes, salted vegetable and duck soup and stir fry duck with beanshoots. The big winner was the pancakes, where the meat was delicious, crispy and the hoi sin sauce on point. This is the highlight of the meal and the rest pales in comparison. But don't let that put you off as for $58 per duck you will surely get your money's worth. Plus grab a six pack next door or a bottle of wine as it's byo.
Nicholas
Craving for some Peking duck? Well I suppose Old Kingdom will automatically comes into conversation if you ever mention that you are craving for some duck. A duck in 3 course which cost around $60 per duck which I wouldn't actually think it really worth but hey! Where else can you find such crispy and juicy peking duck around the town?
Kimosabe
Old Kingdom is an institution for lovers of Peking duck.
The only comparable duck purveyors reside at Crown and Flower Drum, where you'll be paying multiples.
Simon Lao's legacy lives on here.
Gabrielle Grant
I was very excited about the peaking duck set, but felt the meal came out backwards, The crispy duck was amazing but came out first therefore nothing to look forward too as the noodles and soup where average. Staff could speck to customers more in regards to what how the duck set works, as we felt ripped of when he walked away with a whole duck after only scrapping the crispy part off, little did we know the rest of the duck, I am only assuming was in the noodles and soup .
Must Be Hungry
Best peking duck I had so far in Melbourne no doubts. $58 is a reasonable price and the quality was great. 3 of us shared a duck and some side dishes as well as dessert. The place is simple, nothing fancy and on the older side but you know what: we came here for duck and it truly was the duck's nuts!
La Fi
Old Kingdom has a very good first course (duck with pancakes) which I find almost as good as Simon's in Box Hill. However the second course (oily flavourless noodles) is horrible and the soup is nothing special. 2nd and 3rd course are much better at Simon's and so is the atmosphere.
Chris
It's a simple place that does one thing really well....DUCK ! It's always busy the food is great and cheap. The service can be a little lacking and the decor is average ,but the duck is awesome. $58 per duck , one duck between 2. Be there a number of times and it's always the same. Worth going

DO: The Peking Duck set course obviously.

DON'T: Do anything else but the Peking Duck. Hold strong, stay firm, don't divert. The Duck is the king here.

TIP: Book and order the ducks. Usually 1 duck per couple. It comes with three courses. Also, there's a bottle shop next door. BYO Wine. Score!!! Secret tip, if you ask them nicely, they can give you the duck bones to take home to make duck broth. For FREE

To have seen and heard the phenomenal reviews about this monumental establishment of Chinese gastronomy, I finally decided to dine there for the very first time after all these years of browsing the Urbanspoon/Zomato website.

Before delving into comments which this community may regard as somewhat surprising and attention seeking, it should be made clear that being the Beijingnese I am meant that Peking duck is something of great sentimental value and also a dish to be heavily criticized upon when done incorrectly.

Now, where should we start? Maybe the restaurant's very own signature; its roast duck. Having spent my youth and high school holidays in Beijing, I've eaten my fair share of Pekings Ducks at a variety of authentic Beijingnese/Central-North restaurants, that all happen to specialize in the same subject matter (ie. duck) we are talking about. Generally speaking, the "perfect" Peking duck seeks to have a dark brown, instead of golden, skin. The fat between the meat and its exterior should be roasted to a crystallized form (that when biting just the skin and its attached fat the texture should be similar to a gamy flavoured smith chip) rather than just an oily jelling agent that joins the flesh and the skin. The restaurant's failure to cook this 2-3mm layer of fat down into the necessary microscopic web form subsequently leads to good, but not good enough meat being produced. The whole of point of crystallization is so that the fat can cascade into the flesh and moisten/tenderize the meat. Maybe it's through the skill-set of the chef and quality of the duck that the meat is still tender, but Old Kingdom's main event simply does not lift up to its expectation which I was put forth.

Now about the sauce. It must have been either my own carelessness or the high rating on Zomato that misled me into not reading the menu before I went. For anyone that actually thinks Hoi Sin sauce is the best, most authentic and/or traditional condiment required for eating Peking duck, you are wrong sir and please "don't be a hooligan (Eddie Huang from Huang's World)". At this point, I am not saying nor do I think putting Hoi Sin and roast duck together is a sin against god, but if a restaurant was to have "Peking Duck" as its signature, it should atleast have the decency and respect for the less knowledgeable customers to put the actual traditional sauce next to Hoi Sin as a secondary option. Knowing that I, myself, am in no place to criticize which condiment goes better with the duck, the last thing worth noting in terms of sauces is that the "traditional sauce" is called "甜面酱" or sweet fermented flour paste in literal English.

Apart from the above disappointments, other side dishes and stir-fries included in the set menu did actually meet my expectations and lifted up to Old Kingdom's long-praised reputation. In addition, the exceptionally warm customer service, something which I never really took serious note of unless it was at places like Cumulus or Hellunic, merely redeemed the slightly above average dinner which would have being much better if it wasn't for the unauthentic and average-at-best tasting Peking duck.

If you're craving Peking Duck this is the place to go to. Value for money and great quality. Three course duck meal including duck soup, Peking duck pancakes and shredded duck with beanshoots. Every dish was tasty and delicious. I've have Peking duck in China and this is up there.
Owners are great and staff are super friendly. Make sure you call ahead and pre-order the ducks so that you don't miss out.
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
Gone up in price and a little more expensive than the Old Kingdom in Surrey Hills ($58 vs $55/duck which is ok but $1 vs $0.50 per extra piece of pancake is a bit of a ripoff I think!) but still worthwhile when you divide that amount of food between a group. We had someone else on the table who wanted to join for the hype but wouldn't eat duck so ordered Timorese chicken and also quail. These dishes weren't anything special, more pricey than other places but the big plate of Chinese broccoli was great. Don't come for the other dishes, come here for the delicious duck of course. BYO only, corkage $1.80 per person and they automatically charge for everyone on the table even though not all were drinking our wine. We made the mistake of asking for rice thinking it was a bowl to share but instead given and charged per head despite only a few of us eating rice. Service friendly enough (it's a Chinese restaurant after all...) but make sure you clarify who's having what with the little extras, else you'll be overcharged! Nice to still have a Peking duck restaurant in the inner suburbs rather than having to head out further or finding parking in the city!

Finally dined in this restaurant after hearing heaps of good things about their peking duck and it definitely lived up to expectation. The duck is crispy and juicy and the price is really reasonable as well!

Best Peking duck in Melbourne, been there 3 times and never disappoint you, not too fat, very juicy and full of flavour, I can have a whole duck by myself, lol......
Michelle Chen
Peking Duck done to perfection! It's so crispy and tasty. Whenever we're here, we'd order the 3 course duck. I really enjoy watching the uncle serving up our dish - it was a display of great skills!

I wonder why you all say is the BEST duck in Town, WRONG.
1) duck is dry & small.2) deep fried, that's why crispy. 3) restaurant is dirty4) noodles is greasy, salty.

Heaps of reviews saying this is not good because it's no where near quality of Peking duck in China...cool story but you are not in China!!! Compared to the Melbourne options around, the duck here is great and pancakes incredibly thin and well made. For $55 for 1 duck 3 ways, you can't complain. Soup could have been better though - lots of bones in the soup which have been cooking for a long time and almost disintegrating so you get little bits of bone in the soup, not enjoyable. Otherwise, great meal! Will be back again when I have Peking duck cravings.
Helli
Been here easily 20 times now, out of the 20 times, I've been disappointed only twice. The 2 times I have been disappointed I went in really late, they were closing up - so the duck was really oily and made me feel sick. Having said so, all the other times I had went, I was so satisfied. Duck was delicious, service was great (I think I get served from the owner) - his so hands on with his business and he has such a great sense of humor. I would recommend Old Kingdom and they definitely haven't seen the last of me!! =)
Darwin Tantra, TwoPaperPen
They have the best pecking duck in Melbourne!

The duck really fatty and juicy!
Price is pretty reasonable, $55/duck which also come with 3 dishes (pecking duck, veggie and soup).
Peter Shellie
Would be better if we could order.... if you do not have the duck, good luck with that!!

We have tried several times to get our order properly communicated and struggled.

Upstairs - noisy!!!
Danial Ahchow
Worst service ever, the kid had no idea what he was doing. Not sure where they get their staff. I'd suggest you choose to go elsewhere where you would actually get good service.
Jl
Love the peking duck! Crispy skin and great soup! Ordered the quail too which was nice. Brought some friends here and they all liked it. Reasonable prices also.
Jane Le
Always leaving full and satisfied; family run business - staff are friendly and casual. Small tables for groups of 4 or less. Add extra noodle to your bean shoot/duck stir fry in the package and you're good to go!
Finger Lickin
Still among the best pancake duck you can find. Some say the service has gone down. It's still iconic and still on par with the best Peking duck in Melbourne
Ye Liu
Pretty authentic Peking duck from a Chinese point of view, despite the serving amount is way more few than those we get in China. But in general the atmosphere is good, and the duck is delicious.

If you like duck, you've definitely hit the jackpot here. Two birds feeds four people over three courses, and will set you back the princely sum of $110. Duck pancakes are served first, followed by soup and stirfry (or it could be the other way around). Either way, it was way too much duck for me but not nearly enough for my duck-obsessed friends. Take a big appetite and a huge love for duck. Too much love will not be enough.
Diner
You come here for the Peking Duck but unfortunately like most places in Melbourne it is only "passable". The skin appears to be crisped up by pouring very hot oil over it after roasting. I have had a lot of proper peking ducks in China and their crispy skins do not have the oil-fried texture. This practice appears to be used in a number of other places as well.
Julian Price
Very difficult to find a good Chinese take-away outside of the city centre so thought I'd give this one a go. Sadly, it was sub-par. Wontons were tiny and the sweet and sour chicken and Peking beef just tasted like rubber. In addition, I got the food home and there was no rice to be seen. I understand that sometimes rice needs to be ordered separately but when you order two meat dishes, it's typically an idea for the staff member to offer rice - otherwise it might be assumed that rice is included. The end.
I Just Love Good Food
Visited this place two months ago for the first time of cos I ordered their famous 3 course banquet. The duck came out quick, we were little bit surprised, thought they needed longer time to cook the duck. While the staff cutting the meat in front of us, we saw the pink flesh. Without us saying anything, the staff said: Sorry, the duck is still raw. Then, he went into kitchen straight away with the duck. The skin looked crispy but the flesh was rare cooked I guess. After few minutes, he came to us with another duck, yes, it's fully cooked this time. The skin was not as crispy as I wanted it to be, the taste was okay, thought it could be way better than that. Bean shoots with noodles is just full of bean shoots, where was the noodles? It's greasy too. The soup on next course was ordinary, nothing to shout about.
Megan M
Great duck. Enough said really, this is definitely one of the best places I've tried in Melbourne for Peking Duck. Looking forward to my next visit.
J0yy173
Had been here many times years ago with very fond memories of their 3 course Peking Duck. Was disappointed to find the duck to be so dry and very chewy this time. The duck and bean shoot noodles was ordinary as was the 3rd course soup.
Nelly
So been to both Fitzroy & Surrey Hills. The truth is I can't tell them apart. The best Peking duck in town. Extremely affordable & don't come unless you're hungry, because if you can make it out eating the whole banquet without rolling out... Well it's worth it
Penny
Good portion, service and food was ok. Prices acceptable. Recommended 2 guest per duck, it will be served in three ways for just $55. Recommended!
Andrew Pei
As you can read from the other reviews - the duck is pretty awesome. For $55 for soup, stir-fried bean-sprouts, and peaking duck - its good value!

But after being to both the Surry Hills and Fitzroy shops - I have to say the Surry Hills one is the one I prefer. The duck was juicer and the stir-fry bean-sprouts with egg noddles was tastier. If you have the choice, give it a go!

In saying that, by no means is Fitzroy bad - its fantastic! (a little small in terms of interior space though)
Celia Çaesandrika
The whole duck 3-course meal was great ($55 for peking duck, duck soup, and bean shoots stir fry w/ the remaining duck meat). However, it only came with like 10 pieces of pancake when clearly 1 duck can give you a lot more than 10 pancakes. I feel like they are being stingy and they want people to order extra pancakes because 1 piece cost $1 (very expensive for what it is).

Foods other than the duck are not great. We ordered the jumbo shrimp and the calamari. The pictures on the menu are very deceiving. The actual foods look nothing like them. Even though the seafood themselves taste fresh, they can't seem to make a good deep-fry batter and seasoning (cheap pubs do a lot better than them). It was very bland.
ItsTrueFatKidsLoveFood
Came here with a friend and ordered the duck to share. First two courses were delicious, probably the best duck I've had for a while. Didn't rate the soup at all though.

Thiis is one of the best Perding duck in Melbourne. The soft shell crabs are pretty good as well. Highly recommended!!!!!
Btw: it's always packed, so book reservation is a must!!

Had the full Peking duck experience for lunch here. While it doesn't look like much from the street front it was made up for in the meal. Each course was spot on and everyone left very satisfied.
SueyLuey
Always a good joint for peking duck for $55 three way but those additional requests comes with a price!!

Extra cucumber is $2 (cmon theres hardly on the plate) crispy noodles/ramen/hokkien noodle with the bean sprout 2nd course cost an additional $8 and extra pancake (theres only like 10 on a plate for the amount of duck you get) is extra $1 each!!! So really it was about $65 a duck three way. They should just make it a set price with everything inclusive rather then all these little surprises.

Location - parking is always a mission on smith st but if you get there early then it should be ok.

Ambience - always packed and they do pack u in like sardines. Unfortunately the whole cutting the duck in front of you experience has slightly decreased cause everything is all too busy and rush.

Will i come back!? Might head to other places and see whether i can get further values...
TheWildMushroom
Place was closed, they let us in sat us down and I enjoyed a beef and black bean sauce dish.. It had various parts warm, some steaming mouth-burning hot, then others luke warm. Duck pancakes were ok, fried rice was drier than Ghandi's ankle. The staff were nice, funny sense of humour, just a little hard to make eye contact with. And then just as we got stuck into our meals a jarring sound like a sewerage pump went off out the back of the kitchen and then the staff took turns at yelling at each other to shut the door. Worth a try, very theatrical. P.s. now I have diahrrea.

Satisfying. We ordered the duck banquet and it was very satisfying. The pancakes were beautiful, crispy skin, delicious sauce, can't complain. The bean sprout stir fry and the soup were ok, nothing special, but can't complain. For $55 it's great!
The Hungry Ginger
The first course is peking duck pancakes that you wrap yourself with some spring onions, cucumber and a healthy dollop of peking sauce. Personally I think this is the best dish out of the three, it’s just as good and even better than the nicest duck I tried in China and it’s such a large serving that there are enough pancakes for three people (which is how many we had that night).

Course number two is a duck, bamboo shoot and noodle stir fry which uses a lot of the darker duck meat like the thigh. It’s really tasty and very tender. I’m a sucker for duck and noodles and I was glad to taste that it wasn’t to

Another Chinese/Asian restaurant in the heart of our iconic Collinwood suburb, so don’t expect that exceptional welcoming gesture and greetings from your usual restaurant visits. On a good day, the guy that serves you may be humorous other days you may just get a man whose attitude is “I did my job, can I go now” I hear most complaints are from take-away customers, maybe they are not ordering the specialty on the menu. TIP: order restaurant’s specialty dishes, not boring stir fried rice and spring rolls with honey chicken and sweet sour pork then expect to be “WOOWED”. Old Kingdom is known for their “Peking Duck” (another term for Beijing , just old fancy English), oven spit roast duck specially blown out skin to give you that extra succulent crispy skin. A whole duck would feed at least 2 adult, and its only $55… for 3 separate dishes (literally 3 course meal). $55 deal includes: Whole Peking duck + pancake + plum sauce + cucumber + spring onion root. Duck soup

I wondered why my brother’s girlfriend chose Old Kingdom in Collingwood. We all like Peking duck but there are so many places that I know my parents would not like because the duck served just isn’t what we expect from the label “peking duck”...

I continue to be impressed and will continue to visit. It's really nice to know that one of the world's best Peking Duck restaurants is in my backyard and at a very affordable price. I have been to Quanjude in Beijing which is a household name associated with Peking Duck, and while the experience there is amazing - the duck here can stand proud in comparison.
Skinny Glutton
Do you like devouring the succulent flesh of Peking Duck? How about crispy skin, roasted to deep orange perfection? Have you ever said to yourself, “You know what, Marjorie? I’m fuckin’ going to just eat, like, five ducks tonight and I don’t care who knows it.” Read on, dear friend. Old Kingdom has a mean reputation for doing great Peking Duck. At $55 per bird and with four hungry mouths to feed, it seemed like a pretty rad way to spend an evening. Let me set the scene. A quiet, unassuming man strides over to you, hold a sizzling duck aloft as if he’s about to go all Lion King on us. Setting it down on the table, his practiced hands go to work on the bird. Deft knifework ensues. Slivers of perfectly-roasted flesh form are laid out in concentric patters on the plate. Wing and leg-joints are separated with a satisfying crack and within moments the man is gone again, leaving you to the task at hand – it’s time to get down. Here’s the skinny: take one crepe. Arrange your cucumber and sprin

It’s been a couple years since I’ve been to Old Kingdom. It’s changed so much since Simon sold off this business. Who remembers the restaurant when the lighting was so dim that all you could make of the duck was its glistening skin? All of us remember Simon who would personally serve and slice the duck at your table, acrobatically tossing the pancake skins onto your plate, before sternly dictating how we should all fold the pancakes 1 – 2 – 3 – 4. Business did slow a little when new owners took over, but it is well evident that this establishment has enjoyed a rekindled love affair with the locals.
Danielle
The service in this place is, like all Chinese restaurants, pretty much non-existent – so order all you have to at the start, which will save you flailing your hands around like a retarded dance troupe every time you think of something else to order/request.
Foodlovesmymouth
Peking duck - 10/10 - definitely thumbs up! That's what we come here for =). Stir fry duck with bean sprouts - 7/10 - a tad too salty to eat by itself but I didn't mind it. Duck broth - 8/10 - very nice way to end the meal, cleanse the palate =P.
Popcornandtoast
a real treat. They do a brilliant three courses utilising the duck in every way possible. They bring the whole duck out to you for starters. The waiter deftly plates up beautiful slices of glistening crispy duck skin attached to generous juicy flesh.
Theycallmemaggie
His hands were quick and nimble and in no time we had a plate full of duck skin and meat. He had very impressive knife skills!
The Hungry Excavator
Well, I do think that the duck here was more moist and tasty but must admit the pancake and sauce at Simon's was better. But then again, the duck obviously has to be the hero at a Peking Duck meal so I would opt to go to wherever the duck is better, which is Old Kingdom. Besides the first course, I am not necessarily a huge fan of the other food here. Although, what I do miss and enjoy about Simon's is the option to have fried vermicilli instead of fried bean sprouts for the second course. Sad to say that these days when it comes to choosing where to go for Peking Duck, it's not really a matter of which I actually enjoy but which I would prefer to avoid more, i.e. picking the lesser of two evils. I do hope these two places step up their game again as I believe they were great in their prime. Hopefully it's just a matter of finding their mojo again.
The Bake-a-nista
Om nom nom nom! The peking meat was so juicy and succulent, and the skin was crisp, to a perfection.

Old Kingdom is still a mecca for the many duck lovers of Melbourne. It's unapologetically lacking in fine dining finesse

The first one is expertly carved at the table, the knife easily turns whole duck into equal portioned meat ready for those delicate pancakes, spring onion and hoisin sauce….. soooooo good!

Our evening started badly when, upon arrival, we were ushered in by rude, dismissive staff. The Peking duck arrived at our table promptly after ordering and the waiter began slicing it. However, just as soon as the duck arrived at our table, it was taken back to the kitchen leaving behind a few measles slices of skin. It is no exaggeration to say that the waiter left virtually no meat at the table, just skin. We've never felt quite as ripped off by Peking duck before as we did at Old Kingdom. We could see all the juicy meat still on the bone and hoped we would see that again in our next course (fried

...the decor, the menu, the waiters are all exactly what you would expect in an old style traditional chinese eatery. Yet this has not stopped this place from being packed out all the time.

Peking duck is one of mum’s favouritest foods, so we dined here yet again. One duck costs $55 and it’s served as three courses (wraps / beanshoot stir-fry / soup).

I call Old Kingdom the MacDonald’s of the Peking Duck world, but I don’t say that in a derogatory sense.

Is there a better food and wine match than duck and pinot? They just seem to… belong with each other. Anyway, so every few months, I get a craving. A strong craving. For duck… and pinot… at Old Kingdom . Melbournians who know their duck know all abou

Old Kingdom is strangely located in Fitzroy. When you walk in, you are greeted by this cramped ridiculously dark room. It's like they have Earth Hour all year round. I really hate dark restaurants. There's a difference between mood lighting and not being

We came here to test its reputation of being the BEST restaurant for Peking Duck. We made sure to make a booking in advance and book our ducks in advance. Between the 5 of us, we shared two ducks and the portions were just right. At $55 dollars each, and

It had been too long since I had last Peking Duck. Old Kingdom is a Melbourne institution, where Peking Duck virgins should go for the at-table theatre as much as for the duck itself. After the first time, though, the brash spiel of the servers becomes a

The duck skin is not delicately crispy as it used to be, rather it is just hard and seems fried rather than roasted. The stir-fry is overly oily, and the soup had a hint of ‘dirty-dish-water’ flavoured with MSG.

Very authentic and very beijing;). I come from Beijing, the hometown of peking duck. Have to say i barely see any authentic or true Beijing style peking duck places when I am overseas, but this place I have to give a recommendation. Very true flavour and authentic style. the only down part is the sauce, should be a bit richer and sweeter. But still strongly recommend. Well done guys!!!

Get the duck banquet. Been here several times now, leave full of tasty duck every time. Perfect the way the banquet is staggered- delicious crispy meaty bits in thin pancakes, then the beanshoot and duck stirfry, then when you're full but still want more of the tasty duck flavour, a broth to slip through the cracks in your tummy. People who complain about the service, what kind of place do you think this is? You want the waiter to recite a poem or something? Their job is to run up and down stairs for several hours at a time and fill two packed seatings of people full of duck. They don't have time to coddle you.

Yum!. Absolutely delicious! Would recommend this place to anyone. Beautiful duck :)

Fantastic, best tasting duck and best value duck in melbourne

Lovely. Love this place, cheap and cheerful!

Duck pancakes omg.... We had the 3 course duck meal, but the highlight was by far the peking duck pancake wraps. Amazing. Try them, you won't regret it!

Brilliant! Found by accident on our way to Gelato Messina a few shops down and have thanked our good fortune to have come here! Should book though, we got the last table on a Tuesday night! $55 duck 3 course special for 2 was perfect, definitely recommend.

Peking duck wraps was the most delicious of the 3course meal, the soup was a tad too salty for my liking and the beanshoots and duck with ramen was decent, I'd probably return every now and then when craving duck :)

Old Kingdom Glory. I dare say this is the best Peking duck in Melbourne and many restaurants in Beijing (I have eaten in one of the best Peking duck restaurant in Beijing and must admit for something in Australia to be so authentic its great!!!) A MUST EAT. I always go back to enjoy this goodness.

Has never gone back to the standards that Simon set all those years ago. Travel out to Box Hill South for Simon's Peking Duck!! Well worth the trip!!!
.
Worst duck I've ever had! My local Coles has better pecking duck.. No joke. The ducks here had no flavour and wrappers were cold. No space between tables, no service from waiters and over charged.. Until I pointed it out. Then was told we were given an old menu. I do not recommend this place for anything.

Stumped. Went here because the reviews were really good. I should have known better than to go to a Peking Duck restaurant located in hipster central surely full of westerners who wouldn't know the difference between authentic pecking duck and roast duck. It was so bland I could cry. The workers looked so random, no uniform on, one of them looked half asleep and stoned. The main duck guy favoured a particular table and just serviced them only. Ordered other dishes and found them to have that much msg in it, it would last me a life time. Would not come back here if my life depended on it. Im seriously stumped.
Elly Tran
The best food. God. This is the best pecking duck restaurant ever. Better than Pecking maybe.

Best of the best. This is a good place for perking duck, very tasty and reasonable price. Highly recommend. I did tried perking duck at many restaurant, and also at Quanjude where was very famous of perking duck since 1864, Old kingdom still the best.

Updated review Jan 2017:

The $58 three course duck set is very well worth it, still the best in Melbourne above the likes of Da Hu, Quanjude, and dare I say, Simon's. Definitely satisfied my Peking duck craving. Though, keep in mind that the ambience/ decor in this place isn't very well polished.

**********

From Mar 2014:

Crispy duck!. Came here for the $55 duck set which comprises of three courses. The Peking duck was very well prepared, I believe it's the best that Melbourne has to offer when compared to the authentic ones I had in Beijing. The stir fry was very flavourful, albeit slightly oily. Omnomnom. The soup, however, was nothing special but what can you expect from a mere soup?

$55 for what you get is very well priced! The portion is perfect for two very big eaters, but I believe a reservation is necessary because the restaurant needs to prepare the duck with notice.

Good Peking Duck. There were 6 of us and naturally we ordered the peking duck. When we go to any chinese restaurant we prep ourselves for one thing, don't expect great service and you will be fine.

Food was above average, the peking duck as expected was good, succulent meat, crispy skin and nice wraps. The sauce was a tad sweet so don't spread too much unless you like it rather sweet.

Salt and pepper soft shell crabs was very nice and crispy without being too oily. I find it very skillful to be able to deep fry something without loads of oil oozing from it when you eat it. Higly recommended. It could use a bit of salt flavour wise.

We also ordered sweet chili pork ribs. Good sweetness as it was not overpowering and very tender ribs.

The belacan kangkung could use more belacan as it was rather bland.

Szchuan chili prawns were succulent but a tad spicy. If you can't handle heat, don't order this dish. If you're a dragon like me, enjoy!

We finished off the meal with the 3rd course of the peking duck which was the duck soup. Very good finisher to a meal, the soup was flavoursome with nice slight spicy finish and the tofus in the soup were nice.

Overall a good experience. Too bad the space is rather cramped and upstairs might be difficult for elderly patrons to walk up a flight of stairs to.

Will return with more friends to eat with!

Great Old Duck Kingdom. Other reckon it is not as good as it used to be. I think it's still a good dinning experience. Have to try the 3 course meal duck. There were 8 of us and ordered 2 ducks for a light dinner. Really enjoyed the peking duck and bean shoot stir fried, but the soup was not up the par.

Duck club. Have been here twice. Have formed a duck club with two friends. We order two ducks to share. It is awesome. Pancakes are so thin and delicious. The duck is succulent and crispy. We have noodles and fried rice with our second course. Always too much food. The fact that its BYO with no corkage is great. Can't wait to go back again.

Best duck in Melbourne. Old Kingdom is my first preference for duck in Melbourne. Each course of peking duck done differently is completely delicious, and the waiter who expertly slices the meat in front of you puts on a great show.
The fried soft shell crab is equally as scrumptious.
Yum yum yum can't wait for the next meal there.

That'll be the last plate!!. The duck was great! Crispy skin and tender meat. The waiter cut it splendidly and it was a good experience to see that!
However while we were still eating into our wraps, and with nothing left on the table, but a couple of empty plates, the waiter collected those empty plates and then also tried to collect our plate which we were still using. Having collected 3 of 4, he stood there waiting for me to finish eating my food.. C'mon man!! Never rush a man eating his duck drumstick!!
Their second dish: the beanshoot stir fry was also done nicely. Not too oily. However, I'd forgot to ask about adding noodles to it, and the waitress didn't even ask about it. Maybe it was because from the beginning, she was too busy trying to memorise my order... while giving me her straight-face look, which I think was extremely unprofessional!!
At the arrival of this dish, the waitress had rushed herself at putting them into our bowls, and spilled some beanshoots onto our table.
The duck soup was excellent. Was full of flavours! However again, the service was very poor @ the way the waitress had again rushed her way into pouring them into our bowls, with spillage of greens and soup onto the table. wth?!
Overall, I think the food was all great with good flavours, however service was extremely rushed, resulting in a poor dining experience..
Sorry, but service is an extremely important factor, alongside food. Hence I probably won't be back for a while...
For the meantime, Simon's Peking Duck.. here I come!!

What the duck?! Friendly, p.... What the duck?!
Friendly, passionate and relaxed service. Generous portions and an even more generous price. Not one bit of the duck is wasted: from the pancakes to the noodles, and the soup!
Waiting times at other restaurants can make you feel like they've gone back to China to get the duck, but not here.
My partner and I had a very bad Peking duck experience at a very reputable melbourne restaurant. Luckily, our Peking faith has been restored.

For this price and the level of comfortness, this is Peking duck at it's best.
Sarah
For the price you pay it's a pretty decent meal and will suit people who are after quantity over quality! Service is unfriendly but you can bring your own alcohol and it's in a great location

Great peking duck. Really good fresh duck, generous serves and fair prices.

Possibly Melbourne's best known Peking duck. Pros: delicious, crispy, golden brown skin (not red), prepared right in front of you. Cons: hard to fault, they are busy so sometimes the service is sporadic. Most restaurants in Melbourne have an inferior recipe to this place. A must try. Wir: yes, I have twice.
Jaysful
Service extremely slow. You feel unattended and the signature Peking Duck wasn't too impressive. It was cold and dry when it was served.

My bf and I dined here tonight!! Had the peaking duck!! The pancakes were amazingggggggg sooo yum!! I am so full I can't eat the next 2 courses!! Def worth the money!! Yum yum I will be back!!

Things have changed! Literally used to be satisfied and so full u could roll me out to the car but now.. so so not as filling smaller proportions pretty stingey service has also gone down hill.. totally not worth the $$$ anymore & very disapointing!

3 out of 5 stars.... I haven't been here for a few years now... or since the Duck Nazi left. Thought we'd give it a go as it was more of a central location for the group.

The 2 ducks we ordered were served without any issues. Pancakes were nice and thin. We even had extra cucumber and spring onions. When one of the waiters saw that we had some meat left and no more pancakes, he went inside and gave us a couple more to go with the meat. It was definitely different to what we were used to! The duck itself were very crispy but we suspect that they deep fried the duck or coated it with hot oil before serving as it was gleaming....

The second course though was only OK. We had the duck stir fried with ramen and also with crispy noodles. Extremely small serves and there weren't much meat... or even noodles....

As for the soup, it was salty and the tofu pieces in there were too thin.

Nevertheless, 2 ducks between 4 people were just nice. It wasn't extremely filling but just enough.

I would only go back for the convenience of location (more central) but if I had my choice, I would go to the Old Kingdom in Surrey Hills where we would be able to get the duck served in more generous servings (2nd course) and their other dishes eg. fried rice, meat dishes are respectably restaurant quality.
PaulD
Nothing Special. 3 of the 6 people at our table had the duck and said it was OK, but hardly worth the $55. The other meals were also OK, although nothing special as well. It just seems to be really hard for Chinese restaurants to differentiate. In summary, was OK, but won't be racing back in a hurry.

Make sure you have plenty of coins for the parking as well. Machines don't take notes or credit cards, and you need plenty of coins at $3.60 per hour. Would be great if the City of Yarra could come into the 21st century.
Leann
Best Peking duck I've ever had, tried so many and an old fav dish of mine.. Do the duck special they serve it up in 3 courses, crispy juicy lip smacking!! Actually sitting at table now, but so impressed with it, had to let it all out. Even took the last course home cos so much.. BYO next door, nice bottle of sav blanc.. Don't be put off my decor , it's the food and experience that count.. Enjoy !!!!!!!

Had a 3 courses peiking duck here. The quality is going down

Yummy duck duck. My friend took me to this place last week and between 4 people we ordered one pecking duck course/ soft shell crabs/ pork ribs also fried banana with icecream and fried ice cream.
Everything was yumyum and food came out really fast. The bill was also really cheap it was about $120 all together! WOW only $30 per person after eating like a pig. I'd love to go back sometimes
Tiney_Traveller
Tasty Duck. The Peking Duck here is excellent and very much the same as the peking duck you find in Beijing. The pancakes or crepes that the duck is served with are just perfect. We had a group of 9 and between us shared 5 ducks. We had the set menu of the pancakes followed by the bean shoot salad (yum!) and finished with the soup. Was great! It is BYO beer and wine so makes for a very cheap but very tasty dinner. Definitely need to book - we went on a Tuesday night and it was full. If you love duck, this is a must do!
Wendy Yi-Chia Wu
Three-course meal: best peking duck in town! The other 2 courses are average. Defo will come just for the peking duck!
Melanie
Value for money. Crispy skin duck pancake, fried duck meat with beanshoot, duck bone soup, three courses for only $55. The duck tastes one of the best I had before. The presentation definitely needs improvement but what more could you ask for at that price??
Laura
We had a take away from here of chicken in black bean sauce and some spring rolls to start. Quite possibly the worst chinese food ive ever had, the chicken was vile and had a disgusting consistency, the sauce was too salty and just tasted some what stale, the spring rolls tasted like they had been fried in dirty oil. I will not be going here again

My 3rd dining experience - below average. Dined in with a group of 6 adults.

i would say ONLY go for the 3 course duck meal for $55 per duck - 1. peking duck with wrap, 2. add another $8 for ramen, otherwise its gonna be just stir fry bean sprout with ramen and 3. duck soup with tofu and vege.

this is my 3rd time dining at old kingdom. unfortunately, it was disappointing as the standard dropped drastically, peking duck was alright (undeniable fact that their duck has less fat than other rest, it smells good and it was crunchy when its hot so make sure you eat them on the spot) but we reckon they put alot of MSG in their dishes as we got very thirsty after the meal.

service was just average. there are 2 seatings at 7 and 8:30. lastly, do not order anything apart from the duck course meal cause it is clearly that duck is their only specialty - we ordered a normal chinese fried rice (how can you go wrong with this simple and basic dish in chinese rest) but everyone on table agreed that it has a significant hidden taste of detergent. informed the manager and they decided to take it off from our bill - but it was a total put off and bad dining experience for tasting soup in our food!

Quack quack. Love this place, I could go here everyweek if I could!
The duck here is DELICIOUS.
Highly recommended to all and the staff here are terrific.
Dont let the look of the venue fool you, you wont regret it.
THUMBS UP!

I couldn't love this place any more if I tried! The Peking duck is by far the best that Melbourne has to offer. Allan the owner is always happy and friendly. I'm such a regular, I sometime wonder if I'm going to start quacking. Love love love

1/3. Ordered the 3-course duck meal. the peking duck course was amazing! crispy skin, not too fatty - just the way i like it. the noodles and soup were nothing spesh though. would come back to order just peking duck :)

Went here last night and had a wonderful time! The Peking duck was amazing!!! And well priced! Great service too! Will definitely return!

Not Bad but Not Very Special Either. Heard this a good place for peking duck. We ordered a 3 course meal with 2 ducks between the 5 of us. We started with peking duck wrap, then the duck stir fry and lastly the duck soup. Honestly, It was an okay meal, but I didn't find it very special, as with our other friends. Not sure what's all the heap about but I'm not hurry rushing back there any sooner.

I love this place so much! Purely for the duck. Everything else on the menu is good, but nothing to write home about. That being said, call! Call now! Book a table otherwise expect to be sent packing as this place is always packed! Quack

Absolutely love the peking duck here! although the 3 course peking duck selection isn't as quite filling than expected. but the quality of the roast duck is amazing. its juicy, succulent and the skin is super crispy.

service is sloppy so don't expect to be treated like royalty here.

I will NEVER come back to this place again. Not only was the customer service TERRIBLE, I went in there for a take away meal for me and my partner. Not only did they completely disregard half of our order, they charged us for it too.!! To my dismay, I got home, my dinner was missing, along with both serves of rice. Absolutely terrible.

Clean and good. Chinese here is pretty good and really cheap

Suburban Chinese, nothing more. This daggy looking place has been in Smith Street for a generation or two and I'd walked past it hundreds of times but never tried it. This night I just felt like good old fashioned, no-frills, cheap suburban Chinese - comfort food from my childhood. We were very surprised to find the place was packed - downstairs and up - with a mostly hipster crowd. Was this something special, a hidden culinary gem we had stumbled on?

No, it was suburban Chinese, not so cheap, and nothing special. The vegetable dish was bland, the beef and green pepper was short on beef and packed out with other vegies not mentioned in the menu. When the bill arrived both dishes were $1 more than the price on the menu. One, maybe a mistake, but two? OK, it's only $2 but multiply that by few thousand ...

I don't get it. Is this place in The Age Sheep Eats or something? Victoria Street is just down the road with some great duck places and prices 50% lower. Go there.
Sarah
Lovely duck. Been here a few times now and will definitely keep going back. Had the peking duck (three ways, as served), and can also recommend the peking beef and Singapore noodles - they have a nice bite to them. Best of all this place is BYO and very reasonably priced. Highly recommend making a booking, as they can get VERY busy!

Food is ok, however the customer service was the highlight of the night. Loved how the waitress rolled her eyes after our requests.

Best Duck. This place has the best duck i have ever had. Service wise if you get the gentlman that runs the place its great. I Love It :-)

Yum. The duck is delicious and has such crispy skin. It is really fun when they show you
how to make the duck pancakes and the waiter tells a few jokes. It's great that it's byob and fantastic that it's located next to a bottle shop. The duck noodles are great too. The soup is nice but was too full to really enjoy it. Will be back

We've been there with 12 other people for dinner, we shared a couple of ducks, table arrangement was awful, staff was unfriendly and food wasn't great as well, a staff's phone rang the
entire time, overall atmosphere is poor.
Right after we have finished they kicked us out, because they needed the table for someone else. They didn't even let us finish our drinks before they started cleaning the tables...
LamboLiz
Duck was great! There were three of us and we were advised to have two ducks. I think we could have done with just one. I see what others say about service but you don't come here for the service you come for the duck. Having said that our service was spot on. Will definitely come again.
Sparky
Great Peking Duck. Definitely nice Peking duck course and you'll leave very satisfied having one duck between two. If only service and ambiance was uplifted then this would be a better place. Annoying thing is cash only, but I guess it's all about tax?!
Calvin
Best!. The best duck I ever had! Can order 2 ducks for 4 of us.
Jax
They sure put on a good show. Had a satisfying and filling dinner at this Melbourne establishment, with some good company to top it all off!

The head chef (I presume) came out to the table about 10 minutes after we had been seated and presented us with this mouth-watering Peking duck.

Judging from the way he efficiently carved off the skin from the duck, we could tell we were in for a treat.

Once we were done with the first duck and everyone was talking about how great it tasted, there was certainly no complaints when the second duck appeared. (note that there were only 4 people on our table)

Taking the advice of one the reviews that had been previously written, I had requested that the crispy fried egg noodles be added to our second course. This I had to say, added the much required texture to the duck stir fry with bean sprouts.

The last dish of the three dished to be made out of the duck was the duck soup. This was nice, but I think pales in comparison to the first town dishes.

For the price of $55 per duck, cooked three ways, this is an added bonus for price conscious patrons who are after a satisfying meal.
Yolanda
Good duck but service was not very good. Waiter did his job but was rough in handling plates and serving dishes.
Carlo
Great Service, Lot's of Food, Delicious!. If you like Duck then you can't go past this place. Seriously. Ok so the place is a bit old and dingy, but, yes it's true, for $55 for a whole duck, you could feed about 3-4 hungry mouths! First - Duck Pancakes - Awesome! Second - Stirfry Duck, Amazing! (Make sure you add crispy fried egg noodles!) and lastly, the soup. All this from one duck, I couldn't really believe it as well. LOL Thank me later.
Sayaka
Quick, cheap and simple. Around $30 will get you a three course duck dinner at Old Kingdom, starting with the peking duck which is served with plenty of bravado and humour.
Yes, the restaurant is pretty run down and the service is no frills but this is a Collingwood icon. Did I mention three duck courses for $30...?
Retvets
Poor service and poor ambience cancels the pluses of a well known Peking duck. Similar complaints as others such as inadequate creeps and spring onion.
Morgen
Crispy pecking duck!. Great pecking duck - was worried the standard had changed given some of the recent reviews but the pecking duck is definitely still worth it. pancakes are delicious (esp the hoisin/plum sauce) and so too is the second dish (shredded duck with bean shoots). Broth is not nice, however, I'm always too full to even look at it!
Marina
Having just been in China this year I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's a set menu and not ideal for vegetarians. The duck was good and they show you how to construct the pancake. That was followed by another duck dish stir fried with bean sprouts, then some soup. We had a table of 15, and we were all very full at the end. You can BYO from the bottle'o next door. I'd go back for more duck..
T Lee
Fantastic Peking duck everytime!
The_d_rock
Duck three ways. If you like Peking Duck - and most people do - you should try this place.
You start by letting the waiter know how many ducks you want 1 between 2 people or 2 between 3 is a pretty good guide. In the end it only equates to how much duck pancakes you will get - the same amount of stir-fry and soup comes out either way.
The duck comes out on a trolley pushed by the skilled waiter who carves off swathes of duck meat and skin dexterously from the whole bird for you to place in the pancakes with sauce and a little bit of greenery. It tastes wonderful.
The stir-fry is nice. Too many beanshoots for some.
The soup is almost unpalatable. Reminds me of dishwater with duckbones in it.
I usually go with a couple of friends and we enjoy a 6 pack of beer each while enjoying our duck meal.
Anna Shersheneva
Very disappointing duck dinner. The duck was deep fried and not roasted. The duck was very dry. Out of the four waiters only one spoke English and provided basic service. We hope he got our tip. Suggest going to Victoria street for whole roast duck under 30$. Won't go back to Old Kingdom again.
Lexi Keeton
Looks like I should have had the duck.... I'm very surprised to see this place up on the top listed restaurants in Collingwood. I live in the neighbourhood and after trying this place once I will never go back. My rubbery chicken was tough to get down and the atmosphere matched. Maybe I should have tried the duck...but you'd be hard pressed to get me back in there to give it a go.

Best Peking duck in Melbourne! Bookings are essential and you must preorder your duck over the phone. It's recommended 1 duck between 2 people and they will cook it three ways. The first course is duck pancakes. They present you with a fresh, glistening Peking duck and slice the duck infront of you - the skin is deliciously crispy and the meat is so succulent. Heaven! You probably get about 10 pieces in the first course. They take away the duck carcas to prepare your second course. The second course is shredded duck stir-fried with beansprouts. During the second course you can order extra dishes and I'd recommend ordering a serve of rice as it doesn't come standard with your stirfry. The third course is a simple soup, which they have made using the bones of your duck. Byo is also accepted. We normally go to the bottle shop next door to grab a 6-pack of beers. The interior is a little rundown and space is minimal but that does not reflect the quality of their food. highly recommend!
Jacqueline
Ducks Guts. The best duck in Melbourne.
Similar quality attracts a 300 percent premium from the likes of Silks at Crown.

Don't forget to ask for a duck skeleton:-). Two friends and I revisited Old Kingdom recently, pre-ordered one duck, added a beef stir fry with mushroom and cashew nuts, BYO a bottle of Rose, overall very nice experience, with just few notes to add.1) the duck shredding boy could have taken off more meat from the duck: we absolutely loved the duck but found it not enough. A neighboring table with also three people apparently had a lot more meat out of one duck than we did and we couldn't help wondering why. Next time, definitely ask for more to be pieced down. 2) can you believe it? if you want to ask for some extra wrapping dough, it's one dollar per one thin thin sheet. It's just a piece of thin dough, no idea how come!!! 3) finally, just a suggestion: we asked for a duck skeleton to take away and noticed very few people do so. You just GOT to ask for at least one considering how much meat is still there on the bones. With the meaty bone, you can either make more duck crepes at home or throw the whole thing in a pot to make soup or porridge. Isn't that wonderful???
BJC
DEAD DUCK HEAVEN. Three people, three Peking ducks. Service was excellent and fast. Food tasted fantastic, started with the traditional pancakes, duck, cucumber etc. Then on the second course of leftover duck with rice and bean shoots (so tasty) then the final course of soup. I don't know what the rest of the menu is like, but if it's anything like their duck I'm in!

Simply Delicious!. Best duck dishes i've tried, staff were fantastic and helpful, and the food even better!

Great!. Some of the best duck out there! A must try for duck lovers!

Terrible food. We had the standard 3 course duck.

it was just terrible, long wait, dirty dishes.

When the duck came, it was very oily, the skin was not crispy at all(as what Peking should be). The waiter sliced the duck skin and meat in very big and thick pieces.

The soup in the end smells funny too.

I do not recommend this restaurant.

Great duck!. If you like your duck this is the place to check out! not overly priced and you definitely get what you pay for, staff are quite lovely and the atmosphere is great too.

Just visited their new branch in Surrey Hills. Modern decor lessens the charm but the food loses none of its appeal! Simon says? Not necessarily!

Peking Duck opposite of big clock. Went for dinner which my friend booked a table with four peking ducks. The duck skins was so crispy and was a good match with the pancake wraps. Unfortunately the duck meat itself wasn't contain any flavor. The other dishes were just ok, nothing too special. One thing which a bit disappointing me but I think was fair which was you hardly to get another duck. Still, great place for good peking duck.

Peking beef (yes beef, not duck) is the standout here. Jam it on some fried rice - incredible. We've been here three times in a month now. Love it.

Peking Duck Out of Luck. I'd been looking forward to coming here since Peking Duck is one of my all time favourite meals.

The restaurant itself is cosily claustrophobic, as expected. And the staff were actually quite attentive and obliging, which was a pleasant surprise. The signature dish of Peking Duck, however, was a very big disappointment.

I expected a succulent, juicy and flavoursome roast duck (which is usually doused in hot oil to obtain the extra crispy skin effect). The duck here was simply deep fried (and overly so at that). The meat was bland and very, very dry.

What is done well here are the Peking Duck pancakes. They are made onsite and are more crepe-like in consistency, and have a good bite to them. However, when we ran out of the pancakes, the staff had the audacity to suggest a charge of $2 per extra pancake! I found this outrageous considering the waiter sliced more pieces of duck than there were pancakes.

We had the duck three ways, where the second dish was roast duck stir fried with bean sprouts. This was not the most exciting dish, especially when it came out with an obvious burnt flavour. The third dish was a duck soup, which was quite tasty.

I wouldn't object to coming again for regular chinese cuisine. But I will not waste my time (and money) on the Peking Duck here again.

I hope you like duck... This restaurant is unique because it specializes in Peking Duck. Book ahead of time as it gets crowded and make sure to order enough ducks to feed the entire group - I usually order 2 for a party of 4-5. Initially the duck gets cut up into several pieces in order for you to use it as a filler for the crepes that are provided. The meat gets placed inside the crepe and you put cucumber plus some sweet plum sauce along with it - an incredible dish in its own.

You also get duck served with bean sprouts and broth soon after which taste great as well. This is one of Melbourne's premium Chinese restaurants so it isn't cheap but then again not too many places serve duck like they do here. Its close proximity to public transport is an added bonus.

Good Duck. This is very good peking duck however I feel the standards have slipped ever since one of the main family members passed away. The service is attentive and atmosphere a little crazy. This place is so popular that everyone is crammed in to a claustrophobic room. The duck flavour is good however the skin needs to be more crispy. Whilst I appreciate the very thin pancakes I think for me they need to be more thick to hold the duck and sauce in place. I like the 3 courses, and surprisingly the duck soup at the end. A nice way to finish the experience.

Havent had peking duck for a long long time and i have to decide between aussie open finals or peking duck, and lucky the duck did not disappoint me and my friends. The duck was awesometastic and a must try. Had the sendon chicken aswell but the duck is still the bomb!

Funny little Chinese restaurant specialising in 'duck three ways'. In fact I think they're quite surprised if you ask for the Ă la carte menu. Mr Lee 'not Bruce and not Jet' is very amusing if you've not heard his script before, and very professional with a knife. The duck was really good kicking off with crispy duck with pancakes followed by shredded duck with beansprouts and then finally a duck soup. You have to have quite a strong stomach to want to eat the meat in it but the soup itself is really nice. Definitely a place to take visitors to Melbourne for some local colour.

Ditto...go the duck.. The peking duck pancakes are definitley the go; the meat is succulent and the skin is nicely browned.... but I have to say, the duck stir-fry (which is just beanshoots and a few pieces of duck) isn't that exciting, neither is the duck soup.

Table service was quick and the waiters will make you feel guilty if you leave any duck on the plate!! What a sin!

Peking Duck. Nuf said. If you want an awesome Peking Duck experience, don't go anywhere else but Old Kingdom, WHY?

Because Old Kingdom fries their duck like no other restaurants, crispy skin with the meat still soft and tender, not to mention they don't let the duck go to waste,

Yes, they'll cook the remaining duck meat that you ordered into stir fry dish with beansprout and other veges. Once that's done, they put the remaining into a HUGE bowl and make a soup out of it.

Let's recap, you buy 1 duck, you get 3 dishes
.
1st: Peking Duck (the one with full meat and crispy skin wrapped in thin dough thing

I wasn't entirely happy with everything I ate. The best part was definitely the duck wraps, which you make them yourself, the fresh mini pancakes were well made, the crispy skin and the tasty, succulent duck with the Hoisin sauce was superb. The highlight of the night. After that we had some rather disappointing dishes with the bean shoots with duck and the soup.
Was it worth it? Not really...

We love Peking Duck here. It's worth risking my mum's heart problem to get up those stairs and enjoy the experience of sitting around our massacred bird, drinking Pinot and arguing over you like the soup or stir fry duck better (obviously the pancakes win hands down).

Absolutely stunning. The 1st time I ate here I had no idea there were 3 delicious duck courses. Last night I paced myself & enjoyed every single morsel. For duck lovers, this is the Asian Melbourne pinnacle.

Love duck. If you love duck and have not been to the Old Kindom you should be ashamed. Call and pre-book the duck - it costs $55 and is too much for two people. They carve it into a three course meal and you can BYO wine (bottle shop next door). One tip - if they try to seat you upstairs in the right corner near the kitchen - ask for another table. It rattles!

Tasty Duck. Very Tasty duck, would recommend just a fraction more that I expected at $55. Friend had Mongolian Beef was good.

New owners?. Not sure what happened to Simon but went here last week and the standard has dropped a bit. Duck was super oily (yes, peking ducks are supposed to be unhealthy and oily but not this bad!).

The guy cutting the duck up at our table seemed careless and lacked character and almost cut my mate's arm off.

Probably won't go back there again for a while.

I roll out of here, I'm so full. I have a soft spot for this place since it was after eating here that my husband proposed to me. We absolutely adore the duck (you need to advise them you will have duck when you ring to book a table). I have had one duck between 3 girls before and I found it to be enough (not as full as I have been) but 2 ducks between 3 people is just too much. Pity they don't do half ducks. It is the sort of place you go to once or twice a year (as you can sorta get a bit sick of duck). BYO alcohol and it works out to be a relatively cheap night out with great food.

Good value but order more food. Couldnt wait to try the duck banquet here after reading the reviews and i have to say food was great - BUT - make sure you oder additional dishes - just the duck banquet was not enough. The peking duck pancakes were generous but the beanshoot stir fry was very small and just followed by a simple broth

Nice Peking Duck!. Have been here a few times, all from being invited by someone else (never my own initiatives). Basically the main specialties (and as far as I've heard you have to pre-order) is the Peking duck, where they'll slice the duck in front of you, and show you how to wrap it up in the skin if you've never done it before (or forgot how to), and then take the rest of the duck and make stir fry with beanshoot with the rest of the meat, and then finally a soup with salty vegetable using the duck carcass. The peking duck is always crispy, I love the duck skin. It's nice to chew the wing as well, very crispy (eventhough there's hardly any meat). Restaurant is always full, so booking is a must! 1 duck (3-way) is $55 as at May-2010.

We've been to old kingdom a few times now and never once have I walked out unsatisfied. The duck is close to if not the best in melbourne. Staff are nice and tentative. Did I mention the duck...
Simon
Simple duck. After reading all the great reviews the Old Kingdom had, and being local to the area we had to try the house specialty - duck. Having eaten duck in many different forms at a varity of restaurants in Melbourne and Brisbane we really had high expectations. Sadly these were not met. All the other reviews are correct - 3 courses, pancakes, stirfry and soup; $55 for 2 (we shared between 4), cash only, staff OK, venue matches area. The duck is duck - not bad, not great. Satisfying enough. Still yet to beat Marco Polo at Treasury Casino signature dish - Peking Duck.

Damn good duck!. 8/10

Service - despite what I've read on other forums about the service, it was very good. Always friendly, and reasonably attentive given it was a busy Saturday night. The Chef who cuts the duck for you is quite a character and keeps patrons reasonably entertained with his cheeky humour.

Food - well, all we tried was the duck (you need to pre-order when you book). It was excellent - maybe even too much for two people. First course - duck pancakes - excellent. The duck was tender with a perfectly crisp skin. Second course - duck stir fry - beautiful, not a heavy stir fry , just bits of duck with bean shoots. Plain and all we felt like after the rich pancake servings. Finally, duck soup which was again nice and light, yet very tasty (was a tad too garlicky for my likings but this is just a personal preference).

Value - excellent. Under $60 for two for a huge meal.

Ambience - a bit dark and dingy but it seemed to suit the the place and the area!

Highly recommended (but still second to Quanjude!)

We are vego but we didn't realize this place is known for it's duck! Everyone around us was seriously having the duck. I guess highly reccomended for the duck!!!

Peking duck and nothing else.... Of course people come here just for the duck. Maybe it was heaps better in the past, but I just wasn't impressed, having been to quanjude recently. The server sliced the poor bird in thick chunks, it wasn't possible to fit one into a pancake. He looked disinterested, almost inanimate, while performing his routine. Artless, clumsy, pedestrian. Duck broth could have passed off as dirty dishwater. Duck with bean shoots looked and tasted monotonous. Good for a one-off experience, but I probably won't come back, especially seeing as there's nothing much else on the menu that's passable. Tiger prawns with garlic just okay. Not pricey, so that's a selling point. Cash only too.
David
Peking duck is without doubt the best in Melbourne! Always a good view too of hot boys!
Lisa
Great for classic Peking Duck, served with a bit of theatre. Always busy and always great value. Bottle shop next door is handy too. Cash only, no cards.

Awesome!! 3 courses included in Peking duck, pancakes, stir fried with bean shoots, broth with tofu from duck stock. Great service, almost theatrical duck carving and instruction for first course. An absolute must!

Yummy but.... Absolutely sinfully yummy! Book in advance, they'll ask how many ducks you're ordering. Usually 2-3ppl per duck. Be prepared to be squeezed into a small room like sardines.

It's a 3 course meal, 1st is the classic duck wrap, the yummy highlight, very very good. My main complaint is - they don't seem to slice the duck thoroughly nor neatly.

2nd course is a duck meat stir-fry with beansprouts, it's alright u might wanna order steamed rice to go with it. With bigger groups, the portion of this 2nd course may be insufficient and not really proortionate to the number of ducks pre-ordered. Maybe this is a tactic to make us order more mains off the menu to fill us up.

3rd course is a light consommĂŠ soup of duck bones with salted vegetables, tasty. The other dishes and mains served here aren't good, just stick to the duck.

These are my gripes about this place: they don't cut the duck completely; and the pieces are cut haphazardly; sometimes there isn't enough wrap-skins served too; diners are crammed into every inch of space in the joint so dining here can be a noisy and somewhat stressful experience.

It feels like they're focused on money-making & getting the volume of patrons in & out.

All that said, I will still prolly come back again cos the peking duck wrap is just too yummy and the price is somewhat reasonable.
