Review The Gertrude Hotel - Fitzroy

Amazing bar and the staff are amazing. The food is killer too so...if you don't have a drink or eat here...are you even alive?

I love this newly renovated hotel. It is vibrant, and bright, and the Decor is unlike anywhere I've been before. A great selection of cocktails, and the quality of the food was outstanding. The kingfish was the star of the show, and I can't recommend it enough !!!

Fantastic bar!! So cool and fun! I love the atmosphere, staff, amazing food and the artistic super bar which Fitzroy has been craving for many years. This will be my new go to bar for a long time.
The Do Salon

Beer is quite overpriced and the ones we got we're underpoured. Nice venue but could be better.

The Gertrude Hotel Fitzroy has become a fantastic venue in recent years, with the historic pub having undergone several upgrades since being purchased by new owners in 2008. What was once a tired old pub is now a place worth visiting.
The Dear Luncher
"Baby come back, any kind of fool could see. There was something in everything about you"<br/><br/>The Dear Luncher adores this establishment. <br/><br/>When Your Dear Luncher was The Young Luncher, he used to spend a lot more time in this part of Melbourne. Life was easy in those days. Beers, pubs, bands, night-life. No responsibilities. The Gertrude is the last remaining vestige of Your Dear Luncher's youth. On occasion, perhaps once every 2 months he will make a pilgrimage to The Gertrude Hotel, to partake in copious amounts of craft beer and sometimes even food. <br/><br/>The array of beer at this pub is tremendous. There are 10 rotating taps. The Dear Luncher loves rotating taps. <br/><br/>The last meal consumed was a steak. I believe it was 250g Porterhouse, cooked medium and it was scrumptious.

I went today with two colleagues and between us we ordered two Parmas and a Texan Squealer Burger. The Parma was really good, generous size, fresh with an awesome bit of thick smoky bacon and a tasty napoli sauce. The chips were plentiful and good and the salad passable. The Burger looked great (I didn't have it), it was a decent size but not massive and I was told that it was really tasty as well. They have a really good range of beers and it was a clean and well layed out pub - not cramped in. Price was reasonable without being cheap and the service was friendly and prompt. Good pub!

Reasonable pub grub. Reasonably good selection of food and wine. Funky beer garden with a small roof-top section, as well as a decent amount of seating on Gertrude Street and the adjacent side-street. Not a bad option!

I made the rookie error of not booking a table on Monday $16 steak night. We finished dinner and were asked to leave our table with 45 minutes notice because the next set of diners were due to come in. I think they took a punt that we would have departed and they wouldn't have had to say anything to us. Clearly the "reservation" was not made until after we first sat down. <br/><br/>It's the kind of ruling I would expect at a George Colombaris restaurant, not a gastro pub. The waiters however were apologetic. Doesn't matter, they should have left us happily drinking. <br/><br/>P.S. Steak was good for $16. You get fries and salad on the side.

Get in early to secure a seat by the window. Their beer selection is fantastic, there's always something new with a bit of info on it. We've made it our "official" watering hole!

I used to love this place. It was a great little bistro with above average food not that long ago. Not any more. Notice the good reviews are for 2013? The decor is the same but the food and service have gone downhill. My wife ordered a medium-rare steak that came out well-done and blackened on top so was sent back. We were told it looked like this because it was cooked on a char. I don't think so. A Char is a grill, not a description. Thirty five minutes later a replacement steak was finally brought out with the excuse that it had to 'rest' for ten minutes. As the steak was less than 2cm thick, not a thick cut or a roast, ten minutes would have left it stone cold. Again it was well-done. The staff member, who turned out to be the manager, said that there was a communication breakdown between us and them and offered to take the steak off the bill. Fair enough about the refund, but what "communication breakdown"? What part of medium-rare, or pink, didn't they understand? My chicken parmigiana was OK, but very average pub grub that you can get anywhere and usually for less. The $34 steak was clearly overpriced and the cook needs cooking lessons. The whole episode would have been better handled if the manager had just admitted they made a mistake (twice) and not tried to feed us B.S. as well. We won't be back.

A bit of a mixed bag. Went with a work crew, quite cozy inside, a bit updated but not that horrible shiny yuppie feel you get in some places. I had the chicken parma, I guess it was a bit like a chicken nugget but aren't they all? I thought it was not bad, chips were good and salad servicable and a large meal for $21. Others in my party had a steak sandwhich which I thought was a bit so so and overpriced at over $20 and also beef skewers were had - em they were ok but they looked better than they tasted. Service was ok.

Go there for the beer, but don't eat the food! Eat somewhere else you'll be terribly disappointed if you do eat here. Don't let the Monday steak and Parma Tuesday's reel you in.. The steak tastes like dog food smells and the Parma is a giant chicken nugget (processed) I love This place but what a bummer!

This pub has taken a serious turn for the worse!. Had been a semi regular and big fan of this pub, especially for the Monday steak special - not anymore.<br/><br/>Me and two work colleagues ordered three steaks (I had pumped up the Gertrude to them for several weeks) medium/rare.<br/><br/>The first warning sign was two patrons who had come perhaps ten minutes after us be served their food first. I held my tongue. Not worth making an issue out of something I didn't know the full details of (perhaps they'd called ahead?).<br/><br/>Anyway, the steaks arrived shortly after and my mate enquired ‘these medium rare, right?'. Here I must note that I got the second warning sign things had gone a bit downhill - portions definitely a lot smaller (both steak size and the number of chips)! And I mean a fair whack smaller! I should also note the option to choose a sauce (ie pepper, mushroom etc) is also no longer offered.<br/><br/>In any case, the staff member answered, 'yes, they are medium rare'. I prodded the steak after a few chips and immediately realised this was definitely not the case. My colleagues soon realised the same thing. I cut through the middle (which logically would be the pinkest/rarest part of the steak) to check. It was brown all the way through. I made the point to a nearby staff member and was offered a '20 or so minute wait' or a refund. To try to make a point I went for the refund - sure I could have eaten it, but I wouldn't have enjoyed it and I needed to get back to work so could not wait another 20 mins plus eating time.<br/><br/>Here is the point where I was most disappointed. I'm not sure if going to Fitzroy now means you have to expect serious attitude from staff, but upon my enquiry I was treated rudely with no apology. I'm not a precious bloke, but these are the basics of the service industry, especially when confronted with the facts - a clearly well done steak, when the staff acknowledge the order was for medium/rare.<br/><br/>To then upon heading to the bar for my refund be told by the staff member, 'look I'm not sure I agree it was well done...definitely was medium to well done, but not well done' was staggering. Even if "medium to well done" is now a level of cooking, it's nowhere near medium/rare on the spectrum. You're admitting it's way off, closer to the fully cooked well done steak, and giving attitude after acknowledging a mistake at the same time.<br/><br/>As I said, generally I'm a reasonable guy - but after pumping up the Gertrude so much to my mates for this lunch, this was an epically disappointing experience. <br/><br/>Will not be back. The new menu has nothing on the old. Staff attitude needs some serious work. A real shame.

The corner of Napier and Gertrude Streets is always busy during the Gertrude Street Projection Festival, as it features The Gertrude Hotel, which is usually lit up, and is also a great vantage point for the always-impressive projections on the commission housing building.

. The Gertrude Hotel, affectionately called the “Gerty” by Fitzroy locals, for its Monday steak specials. For just $16, the porterhouse steak served with fries and salad is an absolute steal. For parma fans, check out their parmigiana specials on Tuesdays with all the trimmings.

For a processed schnitzel the toppings saved it a little, but it was just so dry. The cheese was rubbery, the napoli had the consistency of tomato paste and the ham … actually the ham was probably the best part about the meal. It carried a great flavour that complimented the dish perfectly.

The Gertrude Hotel is a decent pub/bar with a decent choice of craft beers. Good to catch up with friends and enjoy a beer or grab some food.

Love this place. Great food, great drinks, great bar staff. Perfect location for a few lazy drinks with friends.

I think a whole chicken went in my Parma!

I love the service at The Gertrude, my husband and I have decided they have the best waitresses/waiters in Fitzroy! I have a complex food allergy and they are always so obliging. It's a great place if you are after a good pub meal with the bonus of great table service.

Yum! and nice staff too. Came here for the first time tonight - was very impressed. The staff gladly made me a vegan meal (where you could actually taste flavour! super exciting) and recommended me a lovely wine. Very happy and will be back :D

Great place to celebrate. My daughter celebrated her engagement at a private function on the upper level – had a fantastic night. The canapés were amazing and plenty of them. The staff, especially Cassy are lovely and assisted in every way to make it a special night.

Good beer, good service but disappointing food.

Steak night!. Monday nights at the Gertrude offer a fantastic $16 special of steak, french fries and green salad. Steak was cooked to perfection at medium rare and the saltiness of the fries hit the spot. Get some hot mustard on the side. Nice one.

Oh dear.....changes not for better. New menu and the meals are tiny. What has happened to your yummy honest generous cooking. Tiny serves. Mussels 1/3 of them empty.....which raised the question did empty shells come from another diners plate? So disappointed we loved this place. Unlikely to be back.<br/><br/><br/>-----25 Aug, 2013-----<br/><br/>Had dinner here with my beer loving partner. Beers apparently very good. My red also very good. The food was surprisingly good and the serves generous. Recommend the terrine, the fish cakes, the slow cooked beef and the octopus salad. Alas no room for desert. A lovely warm room, comfy chairs, nice informal service and pub prices. How could you not enjoy?

Went last night. They had some amazing dark ales on tap. Ordered steak medium and had to send it back as it was very well done. Steak came back with cold mushrooms on the side and meat was tough. My wife had snapper and loved it. Just steer clear of the steak.

Mondays!!!. Monday night steak night is the best! I've held a birthday party here and lots of gatherings of friends. It's always been a favourite. However, Monday nights are the bomb! The steaks are soooo delicious, you can cut them with a spoon. The salad seems to come straight from the garden and the chips are divine dipped in the steak jus. Add a bit of hot mustard and you are transfixed...totally forgetting that it's a Monday.

Staff greeted us with welcoming smiles. Busy Friday night with no reservations. Staff make room for the three of us in the dining area. Impressed with the two floor staff (female) explained the menu & kept our drinks topped up. Most importantly polite. Great food. Fresh & tasty!!! Well done Gertrude Hotel!!! I will b back.

Tough. I'm pretty sure my steak was done under the griller here, so overdone and pretty much the worst steak I've ever had. In saying that, the outdoor area upstairs is really cool. thumbs up and down = sideways thumb

Beer great, food terrible. Go somewhere else! This hotel is in a great location on Gertrude St. and has a good rotating selection of craft beers, with daily happy hour making these very affordable. But the food was terrible! A real let down for Gertrude St./Smith St. precinct where there are SO many great places to eat and drink. We ate with a large party and it looked like the special grilled baramundi was the best order of the night. All the dishes where the kitchen team had had to think at all about flavour combinations were an embarrassment! Including: the gnocchi, the spaghetti, the chicken skewer, the eggplant "moussaka" (so-called).

Great atmosphere. Had a nice dinner here last night. The place has a good atmosphere and there were no complaints with the service for a pub. Only issues were when I ordered an IPA and the waitress returned to tell me that it was out so here was an totally different beer (which was crap) and that they had no knowledge at all of beer. They didn't even know what they had on tap. Their beer range is however big enough to find a couple of nice beers through the general rubbish.

Great service and atmosphere. We had an early Sunday dinner here and it was great. Well priced, great service and very nice atmosphere. Recommend.

Great food and awesome service. Might have to make it a new regular.

Perfect. Great food, fantastic service with a smile.

Great place. Diverse selection of local craft beers on tap - 12 in total. Bar menu consists of pub staples, steak SW is awesome. Dining room has recently been renovated and the menu / food is interesting and well executed. It's a winner

Ambitious menu, prices high for disappointing meal. Of 4 dinner mains, no-one was complimentary. Limited vegetarian options, Gnocchi dish barely warm and lacked taste. Slow cooked lamb looked like tuna, and was barely touched. Basically the chips were the highlight. Expensive and disappointing.

Always a winner!!. The Gertrude is the new ‘It’ pub for Fitzroy! Stylish, amazing food that is always changing and really lovely staff who are happy to cater to whatever needs you may have. The cheese croquettes are my favourite!

Thumbs up. Gertrude Hotel is surprisingly cosy and classy. The lunch menu is flavoursome and is also great for a few quiet drinks.

Love Love Love. The Getrude is such an awesome venue for a quiet meal or a function! <br/>Staff are GREAT, food is to die for, and the ambience is just awesome!

Early dinner.... We came here for the cheap Monday steaks and they were juicy and tender and delicious! The fries are golden and crispy and the salad was fresh and lightly dressed. The staff were super friendly and the general atmosphere of the place is warm and welcoming.

Great feel, nice staff. The Parma is excellent and they accommodated my large group well.

Ambience was lovely. Great little place. Gnocchi was fantastic. Shame they forgot the entree.

Love this pub. This pub has everything I like - warm, cosy atmosphere, a front bar with the footy on (not for me, but for my bf!) and a back part (not cordoned off but still in the main pub) with table service but not pretentious. I'm yet to check out the beer garden. The food is really nice - decent serves (except [if the owners are reading] the gnocchi - that's a bit small, could do with a bit more!) and flavoursome and wholesome. The parma is big and my bf has said rates in his top list. I just wish it was closer to my house so it could be my real local! Definitely recommend, specially now in winter with the fire on!

Our favourite. My husband and I think the Gertrude has got everything right - food, price, ambience - staff are great and we have never had a bad experience there. Worth the drive for us from the Mornington Peninsula! (there should be more restaurants in inner city like this - though we would still only go to the Gertrude!)

Used to love this place back in the day. This pub used to be a simply fantastic place to go. Awesome food, cheap, great staff and of course Billy the dog. The staff are still great, but now the food is bland, the menu is overpriced and even though the meals come out fast, they just aren't nice.

Best pub experience! Staff A1 Food A grade Value A+

It's a warm summer Monday night. Ratings: Staff Staff: 8.5/10. Food: 8. Ambience: 8. Value: 8.5. A special place. A special experience.

Brilliant on all fronts. Highly recommend to any gastropub junkie.

The sexy steak cooked medium rare was sitting in a puddle of sauce next to my faggot of fries, with my mountain of salad hanging over the lot... Each morsel of the steak was evenly cooked, juicy and tender, with a good size and thickness. The red wine jus provided ample flavour and moisture. The chips were deliciously light and crispy on the outside with fluffy substance on the inside despite their skinny cut. They were well seasoned, not oily and apparently tasted like garlic bread when dipped in the aioli sauce. The salad was fresh and dressed just enough to provide lubrication without an overpowering flavour... After our meals, we scooted off to see the film. It was exactly what I expected - lots of fantasy and colour - but it didn't blow my socks off like that $16 steak did... bravo!

The service was certainly at a level above what I'd expect at a pub, certainly one serving food at the price of their specials! I'd be happy to go back again to try another lunchtime special, or in the evening/at a weekend to grab a beer with food.
