Review The Union Club Hotel - Fitzroy

Lee M
Fantastic food and venue. Great pub feel. Kangaroo steak was pretty yum
Carl Bronkhorst
Busy place, cheerful bar staff. Alot of warmth, and a cosy atmosphere. It was a miserable 9° out side and the just was nice and toasty inside.

Great to be back at the Union Club after 5 or so years and discovering that pretty much nothing has changed. Still a traditional pub serving real food and drinks to real people. Long may it continue! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it was a bit crowded for this now rural resident and took a while to get served on occasions but we loved it all the same.

Just moved into the area & came here the other night. It's a 2 min walk off Smith Street. Such a warm & friendly welcome from the workers. Drinks are well priced & there's a really happy & friendly vibe - well needed in the middle of Winter! I left my bag on the chair next to me & called the next morning. Despite not being open until the afternoon the workers took my call & asked me what my bag looked like & what was in it - thankfully it was there! Again, despite them not opening until the afternoon they were very happy for me to come straightaway & collect it - Legends! This pub really knows what Hospitality is & I look forward to going back again soon & thanks again re my bag!

Love the Union. Been one of my fav locals for years. Ace crowd, great staff and perfect decor! Although I've never quite forgiven them for taking their crispy skin chicken in creamy mushroom sauce w/- bashed potatoes off the menu 😢
Nicole Marie
Really nice staff and excellent food. Loved the barramundi!
Lee Yu Xuan
It’s one of the oldest bar in Melbourne city, I assumed. They having the old setup and old photo, it full of history, the bartender was so sweet and nice. Like this place
Darren Geary
Great innercity pub, great beer, pool table and friendly staff. Fireplace, lots of zones to sit including courtyard and roof area. Not pretentious, full of normal people.
Mandi Marks
My family and I went there as I'm a huge offspring fan and wanted to check out the pub in the show. It's a really good honest old pub. It's got the atmosphere and staff were really friendly. We had some drinks and ate dinner, really good food and huge servings!! The kids played the pinball and arcade table and we had a great evening. We will be back regularly!!
Sherryl Kershaw
great food music a bit loud in a small area will def go back for hamburgers and the steak
Ruth Cathcart
Hi guys! I had my 30th up in your private space this weekend. Just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU. Everyone was amazing and Amy on the bar was super chilled, helpful and some of my guests assumed she was part of the party because she was so friendly! All the food was delicious and everything went smoothly. Thank you for putting up with us and packing up everything for us to collect the next day. Will definitely recommend using the space for a private and easy party!! Cheers, Ruth

Always 5 star.... be it the food, the drinks, the surroundings, the staff and the punters... good vibes
Nikki Pagliuca
It was a great pub as my hubby and daughter were playing the sit down arcade game and played some pool it was a great day out and we will definitely be back thank u x

Had a parma, it was huge and pretty tasty. Visited the art show upstairs, had a great atmosphere and plenty of nice people. All in all a good pub worth checking out.

Enjoyed our dinner here last night. Have been coming here for years and never disappoints, food, service and friendly staff make it a great night every time. My partner can't go past the burger, hard to get him try anything else!
Kimberley Scott
Friendly staff, quality drinks. Put up with my lurking about looking at the rooms featured in Offspring.
Johnny Bro
First time visit - the staff and patrons were so welcoming - the atmosphere supa chill and the devious food in the plate - all 3 tick the 5 star box - definitely be back
Sandy Jeffries-Stern
A favorite pub that is comfy to hang out in and being a little bit tucked away avoids Fitzroy visiting wankers and has remained a backstreet local.
Michael Conan-Davies
The open fire was a treat on a frosty winter night. Parma and guiness hit the spot perfectly and arrived in good time.
Natika Mockler
This bar was stylish and homely, games to keep you occupied and a fire to keep you warm, staff were chippar and smooth, food was tasty and plentiful. It's a keeper!
Annie Reeves
This was my second visit. It's a great old fashioned pub, no pokies here, especially welcoming in Winter with the open fire etc. A tad dark inside for a sunny Spring day, but we were directed to seating in the laneway which was very pleasant and let the sun in. Tables being exposed to the outdoors could do with a good scrub. Menu is fabulous and caters really well to vego/vegans. Will definitely be back.
Mark Kendrick
lovely pub! Barman is great. Delicious food. Lovely beer garden
Jennpf
Dropped in here for a few drinks before dinner elsewhere. When we entered felt like we had entered a time warp. This is a real old pub, no updates, no interior designers, no nothing! It is beautiful. We had a few drinks which were refreshing and delicious. People at other tables were playing scrabble. It was delightful.<br/>We saw meals being ferried to tables and they looked and smelt yummy. Based on this we perused the menu - a great traditional pub menu. We will be back for dinner soon.
Michelle
REALLY disappointing. My husband and I decided to try this place for dinner as it seemed to have a really good vibe. The food I ordered was terrible. Eggplant parmigiana???? Not sure how this dish can be on the menu. It is not eggplant parmigiana. Aside from this it was tasteless and dry. The lack of sauce and sour taste was just made it inedible, not sure really what was going on with the weird flavors - something was off. Frankly this was just a waste of money. I could have gone to a fast food place for a better dinner.
Timinmelbourne
My partner and I dropped in here for a pre dinner drink. This is a great old pub, very old school, it was fun. <br/><br/>The service was great, v relaxed but attentive. They have some good beers on tap, an extensive wine collection and a number of spirits.<br/><br/>This was a great place for a casual drink, and the menu was HUGE, one of the biggest I’ve seen catering for everyone I guess lol
The Hungry Vegan
I was craving an eggplant Parma and have been to Mrs Parma that many times that we were keen to check out a new place. As only one of the few pubs in melbourne that served this vegetarian version of the classic dish, was keen to try.<br/><br/>The Mexican eggplant Parma was great! However the crispiness not as much as I was hoping, with the sauce having soaked for too long. The chips however were amazing. Highlight of the night was definitely the sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce! One of the best I've had!<br/><br/>Our experience was unfortunately not the best as they forgot our dish, and we were waiting for close to an hour. However the wait staff were super apologetic and gave us a free beer to apologize.
JtotheG
Ordered the steak for lunch and dips but the food took a while to be served. Atmosphere was nice, especially next to the fireplace. The price was a bit on the higher bracket but the serve was large and flavour was delicious.

I am up with the current times and I know this place was featured in a popular local television series. I never got past the first episode without falling asleep, but I liked the rooftop drinking section on a sunny day.
Taliahcahill
Extremely poor and lacking service. We walked in here for a Saturday afternoon beer. We were ignored sitting at the bar TWICE. The guy with the shaved head and some non descript woman working the bar. Two selerate guys walked up to the bar and were served before us.
Alex
Classic old school pub with a lovely roofdeck! Came here with a group of friends for dinner, the meals were all really tasty and the parma's were huge - good value for money! My vego friend was particularly impressed with the range of vego/vegan friendly options available. Great range of beers and friendly staff 👍
Dickmont Jones
Excellent lively local pub for beer and cute looking local talent cracking a cold one with their mates. Gets really busy for din dins.<br/><br/>For food I ordered the southern fried chicken burger and it wasn’t even southern fried. It was pan fried. Very disappointing as I was pretty sure I ordered the southern fried chicken burger. I didn’t want to ask why it wasn’t coated in buttermilk and deep fried etc because I was hungry and just needed to get anything up on in me. <br/>Anyway there was a pickle on top like ??? Weird as. Stingy serving of chips. Seriously. Tasty tho cheers. Small plate? Yes. <br/><br/>Honesty though, I could’ve gone to Maccas and had a satisfying 4 McChicken burgers for the price I paid for this meal. Way overpriced! <br/><br/>I saw a guy he was so disgusted with his Chicken Parma he threw the meal off the table. He wasn’t happy, he walked right out of there. Didn’t even say goodbye to his mates. I was so tempted to scoop it off the floor and eat it. I hate when people abuse food. Makes me sad.
Melbourne To Mouth
Brought my husband here when he became an Aussie for the Kangaroo steak and LOVED The place.<br/><br/>When so many old pubs are going for the revamp and cashing in on 'fancy' pub food, it's so cool to see a venue sticking to its roots. Complete with linoleum floor and box telly in the corner. Menu is great with very generous portions, great selection of tap beers, what else do you want?<br/><br/>Absolutely LOVE it.
Jesse Elisabeth Dean
Great lunch today, had the veg special (eggplant with mixed grains and lentils) which was surprisingly sophisticated for a pub meal. Only drawback was two of the accompaniments were missing!
The_Franch
Love this place in winter especially by the open fireplace. Just a classic pub. I've only had the chicken parma and I'll probably stick to that as it's close to my favourite in Melbourne. Wish I was a northsider! 😯
Leonsakellaris
Hadn't been to the union for a while and forgot how good this place really is. A classic local pub, great atmosphere and the service and staff were terrific.
Peta
Unfortunately not a great experience tonight - 3 of us paid $24 each for a parma that tasted like it had been cooked days ago and reheated, with nasty soggy crumbs and a weird underlying flavour. We hadn't been to the union in ages, and I guess we won't be racing back.
Stu
Had dinner here on Saturday night and everyone's meals were good. The portion sizes were on the large size which most people appreciated. The pub standards (steaks and parmas) went down a treat. I ordered the salmon and it was great. Definitely a good place to go for traditional Melbourne pub food, there's no fancy frills, just descent meals.
Mark Patrick
Just had a really average meal here, pity, it was once a really great pub meal.<br/><br/>Might have just been an off day but last time was also maybe a 3.0 at best.
Rat Preston
People, please make sure next time you buy a Parma you make sure the chef DOES NOT put the Parma on top of the chips. I have recently made a discovery that will rock you socks off! <br/><br/>For over 20 years the Government has been providing kickbacks to pubs that put the chips under the parma. Why, you ask? Well, I'm not going to get too technical, all you need to know is that a mixture of Napoli sauce, cheese, ham, chicken and potato causes a chemical reaction in the brain, that the government uses to control your thoughts. I swear this is true! An older gentlemen I shared a dart with on Swanston Street told me. He has actually met members of the illuminati.<br/><br/>So please, enjoy your Parma but never, ever, ever accept one with the chips under the chicken breast!!!! <br/><br/>This pub is good, I didn't take my chances with the Chicken Parmigiana. I had the fish.
Sally
Always good but today's lunch was seriously good. Perfectly seasoned and cooked calamari followed by one of the best desserts I have had anywhere in a long time. You must try the deconstructed lemon tart, simply delicious!
John Parry
I have eaten here many times and and tried nearly everything on the menu and it never disappoints. For the first time i thought I would go the Param (Mexican) as it was $15 Parma Night. Could honestly be the best Parma I have ever had, made better by the two fried eggs i added on top ($1ea). Highly recommend
Claire
Best kangaroo steak I've ever had, maybe even the best steak period. Great food, decent beers on tap. This is the second time I've come to the union club and it won't be the last :p
Ruthy Howard
Great espresso martinis to be had at the Union, a bunch of us meet there regularly and always have a great time.  There is a really good buzz about this place.
Gregory Lloyd
I really love this place! They play great music and it has a really good vibe.  Love the roof deck. Gotta be the one of the best parmas I've had.
Renato
The food is generous, cheap and reliable... but nothing special. Great local and atmos, with fun staff and great tunes. I keep going back.
Bobby
Can't say enough about the chicken parma here. Probably the best I've had in Melbourne. Love this place on a winter's night chowing down on a Chicky chicky parm parm in front of the open fireplace.
Jo Pontini
We had a great dinner at the Union Club with friends the other night.  Everyone's meals were spot on.  I really enjoyed the kangaroo which was really tender and tasty. A few others had the chicken parma which they raved about.  Overall the service was pretty good and there are some great wines to choose from.  We will definitely be back.
VC
We booked a table with friends on a Saturday night and were pretty underwhelmed. This is a great, lively pub for a few drinks with friends however we were really disappointed with the food. Simple pub meals that could have been so much better. The Parmas were either very dry or too oily.... The steaks were over cooked. Altogether very average considering the plethora of amazing food on nearby Smith and Brunswick Streets. Also was not impressed with some of the rude bar staff. Won't be visiting again.
Happy Camper
Always a good time here, music, pool and burgers what more could you want? Friendly staff and meals are always delicious. They have an awesome upstairs outdoor area too!
Steak Me Out
Going inside it looks like it’s stuck in time, transporting you back to the 80’s. It was a fine Sunday in Melbourne and I was hungry and hot. Wasting no time, I went to the bar and ordered a pint and their 400g king Island rib eye, with fries and salad, medium-rare.
Parmasofmelbourne
Parmasofmelbourne. Last weeks parma night led us to the Union Club Hotel in Fitzroy. Tucked away in the back streets of Fitzroy, this place is your true blue aussie pub. Walking in feels like you have stepped back in time 30 years. Old synthetic leather chairs, open wood fire place and the old school canteen kitchen window where you order your meal. Our favourite type of pub!<br/>Enough about the pub, more about the parma. <br/>Parmas arrived in about 20 mins which is quite good.<br/>Schnitzel size varied around the table, but were all quite thick and big.<br/>The union club uses some lovely real white chicken breast. Thick, fresh and juicy.<br/>The napoli here was impressive. Quite different to what we are usually accustomed to. The napoli was quite chunky. More like a salsa than a sauce. That being said it was absolutely flavoursome and delicious. We love our napoli but the union club slammed a little to much napoli on their breast. It made the crumbs quite soggy and a oily mess. It wasn’t a big deal as the flavours were still incredible.<br/>The Virginian ham was quite tasty and did its job well.<br/>The mixture of tasty and mozzarella cheese was great also. Was nice and gooey and grilled to perfection.<br/>The chips were your pub cut chippies. They were cooked & seasoned well. They were nothing special. In saying that the parmas were accompanied with pots of tomato sauce which served their purpose as a chip dip very well. We honestly wish more pubs did this. Big ups for union club for that. <br/>The salad was a mixed garden salad with plenty of goodies (tomato, onion, radish, cucumber). Hit the spot.<br/>The Union Club Hotel parma comes in with a reasonable price of $22. This pub is the kind of pubs we love dining in. The waiters and chefs were extremely nice and welcoming also so thank you to them. We have no issues in spending $22 for the parma here again. All up it was a dayum good parma. If you ever find yourself in the area, definitely pop in for a parma. You won’t be disappointed. We will see you again soon Union Club.<br/><br/>7.5/10

Burger Heaven. I recently visited The Union Club Hotel and was delighted with the meal I was served! There was 4 of us all together my friends ordered Kangarro & Chicken Parmas I ordered the Union Burger & Chips, the staff were really nice and complimented me, the food didn't take long to come out to us all in all I would definitely recommend this place to my friends!
Melbourne Patron
The food's really good. They do classic pub grub like parmas, burgers and so on, but also have a specials board, and offer interesting choices like kangaroo, or fried camembert. The menu is also big - lots of yummy choices!
Secret Temple
... it is a rather quaint place during the day – it became slightly busier later on. They have jugs of cider/beer for 15$ until 8PM, which is quite the bargain if you ask me. There is an outside area as well, which is less plagued by the eternal darkness within. I would have added a picture of Aaron, but he doesn’t like posing. So for now we can just consider him a figment of my imagination.
Parma Daze
The Union Club Hotel is a gorgeous little pub that serves up an amazing parma, which is unfortunately let down by lackluster chips and salad, If those were to improve it would definitely be a contender for the number #1 spot.
Melbourniangirl
You knew it was coming right? How could I possibly lead you through all of these Offspring locations and not take you the the pub they seem to frequent in just about every episode. The pub that during season one hosted fights, reunions, drunken moments, sober moments, award moments, packed with potential moments, proximity to arson moments, a birth and one of the most horrifyingly funny songs by Eddie Perfect ( a six at best ). …ok that was just a gratuitous Eddie Perfect photo… During episodes this looks like a quite sleepy local and while busy during episodes never looks packed. TV is misleading. We rocked up to the misleadingly quite looking Union Club Hotel (thus the blog title) on the corner of Gore and Webb, Fitzroy. We arrived about 9 on the Saturday and could barely get in the packed venue. People were busy drinking, talking and watching sports and it looked like a lot of fun. If you could find space - not the nicely busy but with a table and chairs pub I had imagined. I ha
Melbfood
Local pub. A great local. The pies, burgers and parmas are all good. Pub meals done really well.

The parma hits the spot. They do a really good parma here. We've been back a few times now and have enjoyed the food every time, the Mexican parma is my favourite. The staff are pretty good and I love the roof deck.

Bad customer service. I was really disappointed by the service my friends and I received at The Union the other night. I ordered a pint of my favourite ale only to find it was off colour and tasted very watery - must have been the bottom of the barrel. I wasn't too phased by this as it is inevitable that this happens from time to time. Whenever I have received a bad pint at bars before, staff have always been more than happy to replace it.<br/><br/>At The Union however I was spoken down to like I was stupid; "ermmm, that's just how it tastes.". Two members of staff spoke to me like this, and treated me like I was just trying to score a free pint, before refusing to change my drink. <br/><br/>And in case there was a chance that I was totally wrong and my pint was fine, my friend was served a really vile pot of flat ginger ale just to be told by on of the same members of staff "ermmm, that's just how it tastes."<br/><br/>I have worked in bars in 10 years and would never speak down to a customer like this. I don't know if the manager had cracked down on the staff changing drinks or of the staff members I spoke to were just in a bad mood, either way this is not how you respond to a totally reasonable request by a paying customer! <br/><br/>Bad service and quality control, such a shame because the building itself has such a great vibe.

Best pub in fitzy!!! So good for a beer and a burger! Great crowd, music and super friendly staff!!!
Penny Trixie
One of Fitzroy's best pubs. Really good atmosphere and the food was great, I had the holstein schnitzel and my friend had the union burger. Big serves which really hit the spot. The place was pretty busy but we didn't have to wait very long for our meals which was a bonus.
Monty Mason
Hidden behind Smith St, this gem of a pub!! 2 huge beer gardens, huge meals and good beer selection on tap. Not over priced like some other places in the area. Banging music, cute and friendly staff, pool table. This place has it all. Great for meeting up with mates for a bite to eat and a few froffs!
Jenny Hicks
Local fitzy pub!! Great food (the barramundi) was delicious!! Friendly staff with good music! Two thumbs up!!
Belleangemead
Great value food & drinks in Fitzroy. Good pub counter meals at pub prices. Go for the Mexican parma.
Foodandwinefan
There's nothing worse than a soggy burger bun, and an hour wait for your food!
Superwoolz
Best house made pies!!. These guys make the best house made pies! Good value for money as they are huge and encased in perfectly cooked pastry with heaps of delicious filling! I had the beef one tonight but have also had the chicken which is also amazing! Love the side gravy too, nice and rich. The staff are always friendly and love the fireplace!
Clancy
Superb!. Just had a great night at the union, one of my favorite haunts, atmosphere was great, lots of laughs with the staff, music always on the money. Had the burger, only problem was I couldn't finish it!<br/>Thanks again guys!
Hbear56
I love this pub! Went there for the first time last week. The atmosphere was amazing, really big hearty pub meals and a warm open fire. Had the goat curry and it rocked my world. Will definitely be returning very soon.
Colinmole
Good food, decent sized portions
Rosey
So disappointing. From memory, The Union used to serve great food. Not anymore.<br/>Both our meals were dry and unappealing (we had calamari salad and chicken burger, pretty easy). It was a long wait for our meals, and there were items missing from plate once food arrived. I was actually shocked at how bad it has become.<br/>To top it off the bus boy came and took my wine glass when there was clearly still a couple of sips to go...but took it away with one finger inside the glass...so not as if he could just put it down and apologise.<br/>Disgraceful, we will not return.
Sebsy Needs A Beer
Worst kitchen staff service ever!. Visited this icon with my interstate guests in May 2014. Let's just say the rudest kitchen staff ever!! Especially one of the male chefs taking our order who was extremely rude and difficult with our simple order request as to how we wanted our steak done (well done was rudely met with do you want that in 4 weeks?) when asked for veggies instead of salad...again met with rudeness. This is not an unusual request. Then he actually asked us to hurry up as the person behind us was getting impatient - maybe don't use other customers as ur scape goat for bad service especially when we only asked a few questions and stood there for 2 minutes before he complained! Its shouldn't be that hard. Then our meal was forgotten and met with no apology! Much better places in Fitzroy to eat with 100% better service. Luckily the bar staff were lovely though - striking a convesation and requests were met with a chat and smile. defintely wont visit and head to local spots like the Rainbow or Rose hotel for great all round service!
The Soop Nazi
Surprised this place has such a high rating, my meal today was bad. I had the "seafood stew", invoking images of a hearty winter meal, but what I got was 4 mussels, 3 prawns & virtually invisible fish & squid ring segments in a tiny puddle of chilli tomato sauce. The main ingredients were actually the supposed accompaniments of about half a chopped raw fennel on top, with a toasted burger bun cut into strips on the side. Awful & bad value, wouldn't go back in a fit.
Kris Nescovski
My favourite pub in Melbourne. What ever you order you can't go wrong. They have some great specials too - for example Monday night burger $12!! Setting is lovely with an open fireplace, brilliant beer garden and rooftop deck. Bar staff are always very attentive but that awful woman in the kitchen could be a friendlier!
Luke Phillips
Nice drinking Pub but the food needs a lot of work. I had a horrible rib eye steak with tasteless mash that had the same consistency as clag. My partner had salmon which was cold and not cooked properly. We were offered a replacement meal and told that we couldn't get a refund. We won't be eating here again.
Hjblackney
Super. Had a great meal and super night
Louises
MUST GO TO!. Union has amazing food!! Great service, friendly environment and overall enjoyable experience.
Leon Sakellaris
Great menu, great service, terrific atmosphere. Can't believe I didn't know about this place years ago. Most pubs make you feel that they are doing you a favour by offering you food and beverages. The union actually made me feel like I was a patron again. This is our new local. Well done union club.
Marcia
My favourite local. The Union has a great menu. Love the food, friendly staff, fun atmosphere and decor.
Sally
A real pub. Had a great night here last night. Fantastic vibe, relaxed crowd, cool tunes, good service, cold beer and delicious southern fried chicken. What more could a girl ask for!
Laetitiamerrick67
Pub food at its best. I have been to the union club a few times now and keep going back with friends because there is something to suit everyone on the menu. It even looks after my vegan friends, which can be tricky at a lot of places. Definitely going back for more of the cauliflower chips! And the rib-eye, delicious.
Sara
Just OK. I eat here fairly regularly as it's close to work and easy for a quick pub lunch with colleagues.<br/>The menu is extensive and probably a little bit pricier than you'd expect for pub food. Overall I have enjoyed my meals (great chips!) but the dressing used on side salads is really not nice. I even ordered a curry the other day to avoid this but alas, the cucumber salad on top of the curry was dressed in the same stuff and destroyed the flavours. Please, stop using whatever generic ill tasting stuff it is and just use a bit of oil, lemon, salt & pepper. It will make a huge difference!
Littlegeorgestreet
Favourite Fitzroy Pub. Having lived in Ftizroy for a very long time I know I'm pretty lucky to have my choice of good pubs. Which makes me pretty fussy about them. I've been to all of them multiple times and every place is a combination of staff/food/music/atmosphere. I must have been here a couple of hundred times and it remains, My Favourite.<br/>I'm not an easy diner (vegan) but have found the staff willing and able even when under the pump. The better music and better fries (why can't some pubs just get fries right?) make this one a winner for me time and time again. Union, I love you.
Eliza
This place masquerades as vegan friendly but they're really not! Have come here a few times and every single time they get the order wrong (and are rude about it when you question it!). On this side of town its poor form.
Two Sheds
Grungy atmospheric old pub located in the heart of Fitzroy. It's the sort of place you wish was your local pub except you can't really afford to live in these parts. Even though it has a punkish down at heel feel the place reminds you a tad of an old country pub inside. Comforting to know there are places like this still around. Oh yes, the food is fine if not spectacular. There's also a semi respectable wine list. We enjoyed the background music too. I liked it here and would happily return.
Koti
I used to like this place until the staff were so rude that I refuse to return. Went with group of friends and plates of shared food cleared without asking, wine glasses taken when still full and when complained about, rudely questioned where glasses were filled to, and given exact amounts back with house wine, not even bottle we ordered.
Melbfoodie
Good value. Went here last Friday for a lunch. Pub was very quiet with only a handful of people downstairs. Balcony was far busier with a good atmosphere. Service OK. Music in bistro good but maybe a little loud. Pool table good. Plenty of cosy spaces to eat or drink. Had chicken with wild mushroom sauce, asparagus and roast taters. Generous serving size and pretty good. Dining partner had a mushroom burger which she liked. Good wine list and menu all excellent value. Worth a visit.
Fidel_cat
A Local Gem. One of my favourite pubs in Australia. Always friendly and inviting, with a wide range of customers from the ubiquitous Fitzroy hipsters, to elderly patrons who have been visiting for more than 40 years. Great pub food, too, and very reasonably priced for the area. Try the Mexican Parma ;).
Leez0110
Welcoming and accommodating!. I arrived at the Union for birthday drinks with some friends last week. I was pretty excited, had put out a big invite on Facebook and was expecting about 30 people BUT when we got there I figured out with one of the staff that I'd booked the wrong Union! Cannot praise the staff enough for their response. Even though the pub was pumping, they rearranged a couple of other bookings and made sure we had a great space. They were so friendly and it was no trouble for them to make sure I had a great birthday. Amazing service. It was setting you don't expect in a busy old Fitzroy pub but made my weekend.
Valerie Philpott
I liked the union...I liked it a lot...in fact I live in the area and used to go there quite regularly.....that is until I met the server diva from no personality'ville....so I get that I live in uber cool hipster land but really there is no excuse for this girls carry on! So I went to the bar and ordered myself a soda water with lime, so $3 please...why thank you and off I went to join my friends...till I realised I didn't ask if they wanted something....so I popped back to the bar for another soda water for a friend....however this is when diva deluxe served me and said $6 please! I was like 'it was $3 less than 1 min ago' to which she replied rather curtly 'well it's $6 now' ......needless to say I was not a happy camper but was so taken aback I gave it begrudgingly without much complaint...not my usual form I have to say....I could not believe the rudeness of this girl....but it gets better! Some more of my friends joined and what do you know ordered a soda water too (and it's not the fancy fizzante by the way! Straight from the water pump) $3 please.....! And they heard this diva talk about as if I had asked her to go to the Italian alps and get the water from a mountain spring!! Seriously if you are going to work in the service industry might be best if you learn to be a little chirpier! It's costs nothing to be pleasant and well if you don't like your job, quit! Because you seriously don't have the personality to perform the duties required...
RikMck
Shocking service by an aggressive, rude and altogether vile server. I have to say that in all my years working in the service trade and dining out I have never experienced such bad manners. This was the second time I'd experienced this girls disgusting attitude. The first time it went without a comment. This time I felt I had to speak up. All that speaking up seemed to accomplish was a mouthful of rudeness followed by her retreating to the bar for a bitching season. She told us she had worked there for two years - this was somehow meant to defend the fact that she was rude and aggressive. God knows how she has lasted so long without developing an ulcer. Needless to say I won't return.
Simon79lloyd
Great food great value great pub. I love this pub and I love the food at this pub . No pretention just really good, really consistent pub food . Always something fresh on the specials board and you don't have to mortgage your house to afford it . Compliments to the chef for keeping it real in Fitzroy .
LG
Disappointing. The food at Union Club Hotel is overpriced and not very nice. I ordered a burger for $18. It came with very ordinary chips, a bit of cabbage slaw with no dressing, and a very average burger. The bun was like cardboard that fell apart in my hands. It was full of this sickly sauce and there was hardly any tomato or onion in it. We waited for 40 minutes for our food to arrive. Not going back.
Violet
The union club has always been my favourite , I love the food and the vibe x

Great pub but don't order the corn fritters - they were gluggy and floury and not much else. Saved by the jalapeño sauce. The union burger (it makes sense really, in hindsight) is a much better choice.

Nice. I came here for dinner last Sunday evening. I had the salmon with beet root and haloumi salad. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the skin was perfectly crisp. The perfection of the salmon was offset by the light lemony tang of the salad...the grilled haloumi balanced the acidity of the dish nicely. Well done!<br/>The union hotel is my fave pub in Melbourne!

It's my local and has been for many years. The food is great, but the wait time now has become totally bonkers. We waited 2 hours the other night for our meals. Yes it was busy, but it is time to either put on more staff or stop taking orders when the kitchen is that under the pump. The wait time has been getting worse and worse over the last 18 months. Such a pity. Mid week is fine though

FUN Bar!. Went to the Union on Friday night for the first time and it's awesome! I got served at the bar straight away and watched the staff while I was waiting for my order. The girls were all laughing and having fun and when I made that comment to the barmaid she said," Yeh. That's the whole point in bar work. To have fun. I love my job. " So much better than the usual Fitzroy pretentious, arrogant attitude. Service was great. Steak was beautiful. Atmosphere was buzzing. I'll be back over and over again.

Waitresses aggressively kicked everyone out at 1 15 on a Friday night when the place was packed...

Grouse grouse grouse pub. Got shickered. Had a good feed. Picked up... nah but the wife and I had a great time. Just like the old Bakers Arms

A quite good pub in a secluded part of Fitzroy. Serves pretty good pub grub.

Had the steak tonight. Beautifully cooked and presented. Just the way I like it and the best I've had in a long while. The pub had a warm, welcoming atmosphere and I can't wait to return to try some more delicious meals from the fantastic menu!!

Good times. I have enjoyed my time at the union, and enjoyed the pub meals. I have found the staff friendly and engaging, especially the nice young lady with the tatts. I can't believe some of the negative reviews that I have read here. Did you drink too much and now you are angry at the bar staff? It's a pub, it serves drinks and pub food, and it is run like a pub. If you are going to be a snob about the food there, maybe you should piss off and eat some sushi instead.

Great night. Just left the union after having a great night out with friends. Came here for dinner and ended up staying the rest of the night just drinking and talking with friends far past my bed time. Fire was going music was great and the bar girls were super friendly. I had the fish n chips and ate every bit. Batter was crunchy and fish was delicious. My mates had the fish cake, I had a taste and YUM! Only $20 bucks for a fantastic meal and a great night out. I'll be back!!

Love a great Pub Meal!. I'm new to Melbourne and love great pub meal. My wife and I went to the Union last night for dinner and were very impressed. Our meals were cooked to perfection, substantial and very well priced. I will be eating here again.

Just perfect!. Took my sister in law here recently- she was visiting from Sydney and I wanted to show her what a REAL Melbourne pub is all about. Eclectic décor, a blazing fire place, bustling, warm and inviting. The food was well above your regular "pub grub" standard. The menu was large and exciting whilst still holding true to its wholesome pub roots. Prices were very reasonable considering the high quality. We ate, drank and laughed for hours and she hasn't shut up about it since. A very enjoyable night.

3/10. If you want SUPER basic pub food and don't really care about flavour then the union is great! I had the special: fish cakes with a lemongrass dressing. They were so bland they were basically just texture, there were bones in them , which was horrible and the lemongrass dressing tasted of nothing but cheap olive oil. I couldn't even finish it. My companions had the Kangaroo with macadamia mash and the salt and pepper calamari. The roo was over cooked and very chewy, the mash had a very unpleasant taste and the calamari was over battered and although tasty after a few pieces once cold became quite unpleasant. If you stick to basics like parma ect you'll probably do fine but for me, when paying 28 bucks or so, I expect a little flavour flave.

Yum yummy yum. So rare to find a proper pub where the staff look like they're having as much fun as the customers. Regularly visit for a pub grub treat and there aren't many around that can match it. Busy nights the food may take a while but always worth it. Kangaroo is always a winner and the pie's are the best winter comfort food around. Highly recommended!

Finally made it down to the Union last night, after hearing lots of great reports about this pub and wasn't disappointed. We left the kids at home so we could enjoy all this pub has to offer and quickly found ourselves a cosy spot w a pint of Guiness from the friendly barman and perused the menu. It's a pretty traditional pub menu w some bells and whistles thrown in for good measure. I went for the beef and mushroom pie, which was a perfectly hearty meal for a chilly night and the missus tried the wild mushroom chicken which had been recommended to her by a friend. This dish was a little something special w a variety of exotic looking mushrooms in a creamy sauce smothering the roast spuds under the chicken breast. Delicious! All in all it was a genuinely pleasant experience at the Union, from the food to the variety of different rooms, and one to be recommended to folks of all foodie tastes and fashion styles!

I used to like The Union Club, but after waiting 55 minutes for very mediocre food, I can't say I'll be back here for a meal in a hurry.

Pretty honest and unpretentious pub with great aesthetics, how great to have this and the Napier so close- can't beat the value for their steaks and burgers, but dessert was bland

Fantastic. Best Pub pub I've been to in ages! Staff are ace and the food is amazing! I'd have a baby just so I can give them my first born in return for another pie.

Great food compliments to head chef and his staff

The food was average, wouldn't bother going there again though

What's the deal with upiddy bar staff telling a group of people to honestly stop laughing? "can you guys keep it down I can hear you all night from across the bar" ......it's a pub eh? And ygey werent even drinking! You should try have some fun too or get a new job in a library perhaps?

Wild mushroom chicken dish. Just yum!

Great pub, just don't get the burger...

Good. One would think I'm obsessed by 'Offspring' as I seem to keep mentioning it - apparently this place is used in some scenes. We managed to score ourselves a table in the dining room recently. The service was friendly and the room cosy. I had the union burger which was good - the bun was a challenge to cut but we were tightly packed around the table (our fault not theirs). I tried my husband's steak and I have to say it was the worst steak I've ever had in a restaurant - it was tough and gristly. We drank the Momo Sav Blanc which was tasty and according to the label Momo means 'offspring' in Maori - there I go again! Would I eat here again - I wouldn't go out of my way but it is possible.

Almost enough to make me move house. As the title suggests i had a good experience here.<br/><br/>Only really popped into have a few beers with a mate but ended up eating and had some great Salt and Pepper Calamari and some very tasty Lamb snags!<br/><br/>Almost worth moving over to that side of the river so i can make it my local!

The Burger I had was gorgeous. Will go back when I'm really hungry so I can eat a whole one! Yum!

Great corner pub for a low key beer and meal. Food can be average, but can also be great, seems to be a bit up and down.

Join the Union. A real local pub, with very friendly staff.

My Mum loves it!. I took my Mum to the union on Sunday for lunch as it's one of my favourite pubs in Melbourne. She had the fish cake special and couldn't believe how full she was after 3 small cakes. She said "They were so tasty and sufficiently filling, I'm very content" What better response could you get?<br/><br/><br/>-----28 Feb, 2011-----<br/><br/>Love the Union!. What a great pub is the Union Club Hotel! Great relaxed feel, No dickheads, friendly staff and the food? Amazing! It's not my local but I pass 3 other pubs week after week to make it my regular haunt. Keep up the good work guys!

Great little pub with a relaxing beer garden in the back streets of collingwood

50 minutes, bar is not packed and our meal still hasent arrived... Booooooooo!

This seriously good pub is tucked away in Fitzroy’s back streets. It gets a lot of air time in Offspring as Jimmy works there, Mick hosts gigs at the pub, Kim gives birth on the pool table and Mick and Billy even get married there. The food is fairly standard pub grub so it’s more about having a beer here. <br/><br/>
