Review Viet Rose Restaurant - Fitzroy

Peter Behrendorff
One of the oldest standing Vietnamese restaurants in Fitzroy. An institution that’s still pumping out great beef pho, lakes and spring rolls with nice alfresco option at the front to soak in the Brunswick St vibe and people watching. Being on the west side of the street it gets shade in the afternoon which is handy on a hot summer day and a nice spot to sip a cold beer with dinner and watch the world go by 👍 🍻

The laksa was good and tasty but the Singaporean noodles were dry and not particularly good. Service could be improved. I do not need the waiter to click on my phone when I'm checking in. It's not polite

Don’t bother ordering walk in takeaway. You’ll be prioritised below the Uber orders. Should’ve stayed home and ordered, would’ve been quicker. 45 minute wait, ridiculous, especially considering the prawn crackers are $3 for a tiny bag. Pick up your game guys.

Updated review: something has definitely changed here, the spring rolls almost burnt, dry and SUPER salty! Has ownership changed? Cheap and cheerful - can be a little hit and miss sometimes though. Some of their dishes are a little westernised
Olga Anyaogu
The Pho soup was super sweet - lots of sugar added. It was impossible to eat. Definitely not a place to go for Pho! Condiment containers arrived half full and dirty; needless to add, we did not use them.

Ordered on Uber Eats, and after two hours of waiting!! My order was cancelled! Now can’t order anywhere else as everything I wanted is closed. Last week when I ordered my order also took 2 hours to arrive, and none of the extras I paid for were included in my meal. Vegetarian laksa had 2 pieces of broccoli, 3 tiny pieces of carrot and a bowl of noodles. Disappointed, clearly they no longer care about their customers!

Came at the start of the evening. Tried to order a three colour drink, none. Tried to order a lychee drink, none. Tried to order a coconut drink, none. All three on their menu. Not a good start.

Been a customer for many many years. Food is amazing. A little pricey these days, so don't go has much as i used too 💕

Ah, Viet Rose, how does your laksa get so creamy and dreamy? One of the best laksas of my life. Some of the other things I’ve tried, like the Chinese broccoli, weren’t so good. Sometimes you end up waiting a little while for your order to be taken too. However, their veg laksa saves the day and will keep me loyal to them for a long time to come.

Really good Bahn Mi up there with the best! Roast pork was incredible, so juicy and plenty of crackling which added nice salty flavour and crunch.

I love the vegetable Laksa, I’ve had it many times and will continue to. But I made the mistake of ordering your vegetable spring rolls which are pretty much inedible... consisted of some mashed carrot and some other vegetable that we couldn’t distinguish.. so disappointing to order what looked like pre made frozen spring rolls from a Vietnamese restaurant.. <br/>

Had the grilled chicken with rice. It came with some Nick Cham dipping sauce which was a nice accompaniment. For the price ($13) it was pretty good — basic but flavoursome. The place is distractingly loud and the service is no nonsense, but that’s not really what you come for. A solid feed.

Yummy baby vegetable and tofu laksa bowls for entree went perfectly with the vegan vermicelli rice noodle bowl, and fast food service, sadly were out of the 3 colour drink but the ice coffee made up for it.

I fear that Viet Rose is on the decline! It's been one of our main local go-to's for delivery for over five years. The past few meals have been markedly inconsistent after years of fantastic dependability.<br/><br/>The prawn spring rolls have slimmed down and become less crispy and less flavourful. They used to be perfect! The stir fries have become sickly sweet and lacking in depth. The only dishes that have remained good the past couple orders have been the chicken satay and the crispy fried noodles, but the dishes accompanying them have been big letdowns.<br/><br/>Going to take this one out of rotation for a few months and see what happens, but for now it's a disappointed thumbs down.

We went to Viet Rose after a friend had recommended the Vegan Pho here. Having tried some really good before, I was looking forward to it. When the pho came out, the look reminded me of vegetable soup from a Chinese restaurant. upon tasting the pho, I was really disappointed. the broth was bland and there was no hints of the spices you would find in pho. Basically this was vegetable stock with pho noodles. the service was friendly and my friend's rice dish looked good. I would go back to try the rice dishes.

I have been coming to Viet Rose for many years and have thoroughly enjoyed my overall experience, but unfortunately things have changed. <br/>Staff have become rude and dismissive, insinuating that we are a bother to them in asking for their help or for simple condiments. <br/>It saddens me that this will be my last time eating here and we will seek further options along this street. Such a shame
ToFeedTwo
ToFeedTwo became ToFeedSeven for a birthday celebration. A bustling, fun restaurant that is popular for a very good reason. A must for those wanting decent Viet!!!<br/><br/>We started off with multiple entrees which included Chicken Satay Skewers, San Choi Bao and not photographed, but Rice Paper Rolls. The Satay sauce with the skewers has to be tasted to be believed - one of the best we've had (with a bit of kick!) and the San Choi Bao was great, full of flavour. <br/><br/>Mains included Noodles with Laksa Soup with Chicken, Soft Egg Noodles with Chicken & Vegetables, Soft Egg Noodles with combination, Rice Vermicelli with stir fried Lemongrass Beef & Spring Rolls and Rice Vermicelli with stir fried Lemongrass Chicken & Spring Rolls. The Bun's are a great size and very filling, easily up there with the best in Melbourne. All mains were beautiful and no one faulted their meals.

We went here for a office lunch. The place is quite standard and nothing fancy. We have been here before and always felt the food is mediocre. The food generally consists of abundant use of ready made bottled sauces which gives quite a boring taste.<br/><br/>I ordered Szechuan fried rice and was quite disappointed with the amount of oil, ready ketchup and a taste nothing like Szechuan <br/><br/>Will I go again, may be not

Viet Rose isn't anything too special but it is still quite delicious. Simple Vietnamese cuisine with quick service and a fairly big menu. Probably one of the better pho places around Fitzroy.
Tardar Sauce
Beef Pho didn't have a lot of flavour and the spring rolls weren't tasty at all. The food was hot and the service was fine. My husband had the Special Broken Rice and said it was ok, not amazing. Solid 2.5 from us.
Mandy Blackman
Really good, affordable Vietnamese food. Highly recommend the sos duck if you like spice. Fried rice is also good. I asked for fish sauce and they brought out a little bowl with chilli in it.. bonus points!
Theknifeandforktalk
Came here for lunch the other day and to my surprise they were quite busy! Staff were friendly and prompt. I ordered the fried noodles with beef and vegetables. The vegetables were lovely and had quite the variety. The sauce unfortunately wasn't the best I've ever had but not terrible either. Everyone else was super happy with their meal choices with plenty to choose from to satisfy meat eaters and vegetarians!

I'm clearly a glutton for many things, punishment being one of them; ladies and gentlemen of the jury, may I present Exhibit B: Viet Rose (The Vegie Bar being Exhibit A) as evidence of the fact that I give woefully substandard restaurants too many chances in the daft hope that they'll improve. This is yet another example of a restaurant that is inexplicably busy in spite of the fact that their food is, to put it bluntly, atrocious. <br/><br/>Alarm bells should have sounded upon the observation that 99 per cent of their clientele are white people. Still I persevered in my mission to obtain vegan pho under the delusion that it might actually be edible this time around. Newsflash: it wasn't. <br/><br/>I would even go so far as to say that this is the worst vegan pho I've ever had. The broth resembled dirty dishwater both in taste and appearance (not that I've ever ingested the former, but humour me here.) I make pho a lot. Yes, it's all in the broth but no, it isn't rocket science. Charred onion is one of the fundamentals of a good broth. It was unnoticeable in this instance, presumably because the stock was hastily and lazily prepared. The herbs and bean shoots were wilted and miserable. The whole sorry mess was left mostly untouched.<br/><br/>I took advantage of the novelty of having vegan wontons on the menu. Big mistake. They might have been vegan but were equally as inedible as the pho on account of being made with those awful commercially prepared skins containing tartrazine and toxic smelling preservatives. There was no way in hell I'd allow those parcels of poison anywhere near the vicinity of my mouth.<br/><br/>The salt and pepper tofu was only just edible, once I'd removed the red capsicum (of course it had to include the one vegetable I'm not a fan of.) The tofu was nice and fresh but it wasn't crispy in the slightest (which it should be) and had retained a bit too much oil, with the salt and pepper seasoning being completely undetectable (second time in a row ordering this dish and being presented with the same problem.)<br/><br/>From now on I'm sticking with Basil Leaf when I want vegan pho and can't be bothered making it myself. And I need to stop giving places so many chances to improve when it's clear that they have no reason to because the gentrified population of the inner north is not as discerning as it purports to be when it comes to dining. Viet Rose is now permanently blacklisted.

Great option for a cheap meal! We are regulars here when we cant be bothered to cook. Best Vermicelli bowl in Fitzroy. Go for the grilled chicken option!
Ashleigh Dougherty
This place is good for cheap and quick pho. I don't like their use of lemongrass as it overpowers all of the other flavours. The service is fast but not friendly.
Sheridanrafferty
The best Vietnamese restaurant in Melbourne, hands down. The hot and sour soup is my favourite, highly recommend the chicken version with rice noodles and vegetables. Amazing. <br/>Thanks for the consistently amazing food, Viet rose.
John Wang
The slice beef& beef ball Pho with curry laksa soup is fantastic, definitely come back for some more. Very generous on the beef, and right amount of pho and the soup. Perhaps more beef balls next time.<br/>
Two Bears And A Fork
As a Vietnamese vegetarian, I have to say I wasn't impressed with Viet Rose. I had the veg rice paper rolls as a starter and they lacked any fresh herbs, so the only flavour was the nuc mam dipping sauce. Mind you, fresh herbs are what MAKE rice paper rolls so amazing, so their absence for me was devastating.<br/><br/>I had the veg rice vermicelli as a main, and it was the same experience as my entree. Lacking all fresh variety of mint, basil and other fresh herbs - leaving the noodles, cucumber and carrot (with bland veg spring rolls chopped up on top) to try and convince me of its authenticity. I know I'm biased, but sorry - no praise from this little half-Vietnamese Bear.<br/><br/>All the carnivores, including Hubby Bear, said their dishes were very tasty - ginger & garlic pork, stir fried duck, squid, chicken - so if you're going to order meat - I dare say you'll have a much better experience than me :-)

We dropped into Viet Rose for an early lunch on Saturday.   At 11.30 am the restaurant was very quiet.   Consequently service was very prompt and efficient.   The staff were friendly and helpful.    We only had a light meal.   The Beef Pho was excellent and the rice paper rolls were very good with a tasty dipping sauce.   It was very good value for the money spent.   I couldn't rate it higher than 3.0 as we did not experience sufficient variety of the menu - but we were very happy with our experience.

Terrible Food Court-style Vietnamese. This was shockingly disappointing. Firstly, an estimated wait of approx 90 minutes on a Sunday night? Hmmm ok, maybe this place is really popular. Whatever, not that hungry.<br/><br/>Secondly, it's not cheap. $18 mains are reasonable, but not cheap.<br/><br/>Mainly, the food was below the standard of many food courts. Both my wife and I could barely finish either of the mains because the sauce was so sweet (on dishes that weren't supposed to be and in a nasty, not intentional, manner). The sauces were those thicker gelatinous nasty 1950's style ones, not modern light Vietnamese. The fried rice had (frozen) corn in it, which should have been a warning sign. So too should the anaemic and floppy prawn sprint Rowland. The lettuce and Vietnamese mint were the only parts in the whole meal that lived up to expectations.<br/><br/>I have eaten lots of take-away Asian over the last 20 years and this would be in my bottom 10% for sure.<br/><br/>And I have a sophisticated palate so can tell when something is not right - but am also tolerant. We WANTED fairly normal Vietnamese, not a Broadsheet experience. But this didn't even get anywhere near that.<br/><br/>Complete buyer's remorse from 30s after we started eating. We both thought we should have stopped and just thrown on some pasta instead, but we persisted then spent the rest of the night trying to overpower the foul aftertastes.<br/><br/>Cross-posted to UrbanSpoon, Tripadvisor and Menulog because I strongly believe nobody should eat here based on the (lack of) quality of what we experienced.

Tina. Delicious food! Viet rose laksa was just yummy, clearly the best laksa i had. Service was good, everyone was very friendly. I would defininately come back here. Highly recomended!

Honourable mention goes to last-minute choice Viet Rose on Brunswick Street (Fitzroy, again). Though the crispy-fried noodles with chicken were unremarkable, the laksa had a really nice kick, though I still think Dickson Noodle House in Canberra is actually better. I didn’t know what to expect with my order of ‘Broken rice with shredded pork and grilled spare rib’ but it wasn’t quite what I got. The flavour on the rib was excellent though I really think I would have preferred the dish for breakfast. The standout at Viet Rose was actually the hot and sour soup, which I unfortunately didn’t photograph. Anyway, no photo could have captured the complex mix of spices that made this soup so awesome. Definitely a must-get.
Hide And Seek
Viet Rose is a casual eatery on Brunswick Street that offers a lot of value for money. Their menu is a mix of Vietnamese and Chinese food, with won ton soup, san choi bao, Mongolian beef and other dishes sitting next to their grilled beef in vine leaves, Vietnamese beef coleslaw and broken rice. The service at Viet Rose is famously sketchy, with dishes often being delivered to the wrong table and a classic ;no substitutions’ policy that may also be born out of lost-in-translations, but food is delivered hot and fast, and (mostly) fresh. Popular items are the spring rolls or grilled pork on vermicelli, served with a bowl of piquant nuoc cham; broken rice with shredded pork, spare ribs and a fried egg; and rice-paper rolls. This isn’t the most authentic of places, but the food is decent enough and if you swerve away from broth-based and MSG-laden dishes such as the noodle soups
Theindolentcook
The rice vermicelli with grilled sliced pork at Viet Rose is one of my trusty takeaway choices when I'm in the neighbourhood. Yes, some of the slices of pork may be a bit fatty, but that is part of the appeal.
Aaa
Awful. Should go to Richmond or Footscray for better service and quality
Bob
Visit. Disappointed. Staff have no knowledge of the menu. No friendly attitude.

Best to avoid. Went looking for a good Vietnamese feed but left very much disappointed. Not only did our meals lack any sense of Authentic Vietnamese flavours but it seemed as though it had all come out of a supermarket sachet. Would defiantly suggest avoiding the duck at all costs as it was lathered in batter and left way too chewy and flavourless. The San choy bao was served to us on one wilted piece of lettuce with the vegetables looking as though they'd come out of a freezer bag of veg (think carrots/corn/peas). Such a shame to pay money for bad food in a city that prides itself on it's multicultural cuisine.

Bad Pho. The beef in the pho was cheap and with too much fat, the noodles were undercooked, and the taste of the soup was too greasy. Definitely the worst pho I have ever had.
Joel
Wow! Beef satay that will make you jizz in your pants! More sauce!!!! I could bath in that brown oily peanut cream. Tasty!
Reachhugh
Friendliest cats around. Mini Veggie Laksa and Combo Spring Rolls and Beef Satay Skewers... amazing. Casual and fast. Love it.
Kevin
Good laksa but the pho is probably the worst I have had in Melbourne.

Best asian ive ever eaten !

Been coming here for years...always consistent. My fav dish is the Rice Vermicelli with Grilled Pork - at $9.50 it's a great, cheap & filling meal. Recently had my bday there with a large group of people - staff were very accommodating & understanding of everyone's needs. Thank you VietRose for a lovely birthday dinner.
Giada
Food was delicious & fresh! Staff were very friendly and made us all feel very welcome considering the large group we had 16 of us at once! Highly recommend it

Food lover. My family and I have been dining in at viet rose for the past 7 years and until today viet rose still is my favourite restaurant. The prawn spring rolls got to be my favourite dish and also the squid in salt pepper. Great quality of food and great service too!
BirkyGirl
Disgrace to Vietnam. This restaurant promised everything and delivered nothing but a full bin of inedible, slime covered, bland food that not even the cat or dog would eat. I do not understand how people write positive reviews for Viet Rose. I don't understand how they haven't been shut down for selling over priced, substandard MICROWAVED meals, soggy spring rolls and rubbery bland meats. Not worth $1 of the $132 we spent. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!! So disappointed.
Nat Kay
This meal was supposed to be a buffet oasis after two nights of partying, ended up a tasteless, expensive, soggy meal, verging on inedible. <br/>All food was microwaved in containers, noodles congealed into a soggy wall at the top.<br/> Arthur couldn't have pulled his sword out of the stone cold mound of tofu. Spring rolls were a wet mess of tasteless meat, all hint of crisp had died a bland death years before. Salt and pepper calamari was wilting in a wet puddle of mystery sauce.<br/>Disappointment hurts more than hunger.

Delicious. My boyfriend and I shared a lovely dinner here a week or so ago. We shared a fried rice dish with pork and pepper sauce. The quality of the food was great. Another thing i loved about the place was the set up. Was much nicer than sitting in places like Lam Lams on high street. Overall great experience and great food!
Jenna
Ceoliac. I have ceoliac disease and recommend that anyone with the same or similar issues DO NOT eat here. I have been very sick for the past 2 days since eating at Viet Rose, despite the staff assuring me they served gluten free food.

I used to work on Brunswick Street and was a content regular at Viet Rose for a good 2 years. Although staff weren't the most accommodating, I had my regular never fail favourite dishes that I would rotate between. Not having dined there for just over a year I stopped past Brunswick Street on Monday night and placed an order. Im not sure if there are new owners or just new staff but it was the exact opposite if every other experience I have ever had there!! Staff were quite friendly and accommodating but the food... Very very disappointing and much more oily... I ordered broken rice and a serve of San choi bau and unfortunately binned the majority of it then spent the following 24 hours feeling slightly on the seedy side.. Pity..
Margiestar
Very, very average. Awful rice paper rolls-little filling & did not appear to be fresh. I've certainly had better. Was there with some gay friends - certainly NOT gay friendly!
Janar Nolse
Good experience. Lovely place. I had most wonderful chicken with ginger and garlic. Lot of flavour and fresh vegetables included. Plum sauce duck is tasty too. Only bad side was rice paper roll with prawns : small and quite blend. Otherwise good place to eat and probably going back there .

"GREAT FOOD" Just had dinne.... "GREAT FOOD"<br/>Just had dinner at Viet Rose with my parents and the food are amazing.
FoodAddict
Cheap prices, bland food. Just had takeaways from this restaurant. I orded the pork and prawn fresh spring rolls but were given deep fried spring rolls which had little in them. The beef noodle soup was very bland and the meat was already thoroughly cooked through. The prices were cheap and the service was friendly and efficient but I won't be back because the food was below average.
Joe Chan
We had beef with lemon grass and chilli, and fried salt and pepper calamari. Both dishes were average at best. Beef was over tenderized. Pretty much any Chinese restaurant can do better fried calamari.<br/><br/>Service was not particularly good and staff were generally disinterested. Worst problem with this place was the noise level. Although not full to capacity, it was almost impossible to hear my partner as the acoustics of the room are awful. <br/><br/>Nothing about this experience makes me want to go back.
Kelly McBabe
Best laksa in Melbourne, and cheap!
Blovedlay
Great cheap eat!!. My favourite will be the prawn spring rolls, rice cake with sugar cane prawns and laska... can't go wrong with the dice cube beef with tomato rice and half cooked egg! best value for food :)<br/><br/>byo as well
Pilad
A favorite. You wouldn't tell from the decor but this place is a little gem. Good, honest Vietnamese food at its finest. Stunning rice paper rolls that win me over and keep me coming back time and time again.
H & V
Noisy & noise. Bloody noisy joint but food is reliable.
Hinmelb
Ordered delivery online. Over an hour to arrive, the phone doesn't work so couldn't call to see what was going on. Food was very disappointing. Obviously owned by Chinese people... This was NOT vietnamese food. The rice paper rolls were bland, and tiny, tasting like uncooked spring rolls. A tofu stir fry was drowning in an oily, bland sauce. Very expensive for what it is... Be careful!!
Vietguy
Substandard Taste. To the people who think the food at Viet Rose is worth eating, you really have a SUBSTANDARD taste. I am unhappy seeing positive comments left for Viet rose and other cheap Viet restaurants in Melbounre as they only offer westernised or low-quality Viet dishes. Being a Vietnamese I know where to have a good Viet dish. If you like Pho (Vietnamese beef noodle soup), try Pho Hien in Sunshine (Hampshire Rd), Pho Hung Vuong or Pho Chu The in Footscray (both locate on Hopkins St). <br/><br/>If you haven't done so, just visit Vietnam, especially Saigon, and try the authentic Vietnamese dishes for yourself. The food is so tasty and cheap overthere. For just $2.5 you could enjoy a delicious Pho in a nice, clean, air-cond restaurant in Saigon!
Patrick Joseph
Twice a week for three years - staff are very helpful and sweet, food is amazingly fresh and fast. Highly reccomend clear soup with veggies and tofu, clean and fresh.

Hmmmmm. Went to Viet Rose last night with my good friends Dizz, E & C-ham. We got San chow bow, Prawn & pork rice paper rolls and some prawn crackers to start. The san chow bow was not bad but a little bland. Rice paper rolls were average at best (less than flavoursome) & the prawn crackers don't need to be explained. <br/>But the main was very dissapointing, i opted for a beef pho, which was terrible. The beef was so tough and chewy, it wasn't brown it was almost white. They didnt have bottles of chilli or hoisin sauce on the table and when i asked for it gave me some in a ramiken but was really sparing. Everyone was quite dissapointed but my meal was definetly the worst. Will not be going back!
JC
AWFUL. Did not deserve any payment whatsoever as the food is just so below any reasonable human standard. I have been to this place twice, the first time I was thoroughly disappointed but decided to give this place a second chance and by that time, this place was a never again. Not even any condiments on the table, I had to ask for my tea which is a necessity for any standard Vietnamese restaurant. Do not go here by any means. It seems they cook the food without soul OR skill because their customer base consist of mainly caucasian. BIG MISTAKE. The beef AND chicken pho which is the biggest if not one of, had all the complexities of stock powder, water, noodles and meat. The broken rice, well, is the chef even Vietnamese at all? Having said this, don't be lazy and just make the extra trip to Richmond or even better, Springvale. Nothing authentic here.
Ald28
A great little place. I have been going to Viet Rose for years and really love. The decor is a bit dated but the food is always fresh and tasty. Great for a cheap hearty meal.
Jbie
Appalling. This was really disappointing...<br/><br/>We ordered crispy noodles with vegetables, and got poorly cooked dry noodles with no tenderness in them at all, and were more crunchy than crispy. <br/>And the sauce was a simple soy and MSG mix, a shiny translucent gel with the unmistakeable bite of too much MSG.<br/><br/>The vegie spring rolls were pasty on the inside, a simple mush of carrot and cabbage.<br/><br/>Also, while the service was warm and friendly, our request to have the sticky table wiped down was warmly accepted but never carried out.<br/>Glasses of water we asked for never arrived.<br/>And apart from someone coming to take our order and then deliver our food, no one ever came to our half of the restaurant again making it impossible for us to order anything more (or re-request our water).<br/><br/>On the upside, the coconut juice was fresh and delicious, and the mixed vegetables were well cooked.<br/><br/>All in all - disappointingly cooked food made for a disappointing night out. A bit of a pointless experience.
Missy
Cannot say enough good things!. This is one of my favourite restaurants in Fitzroy. If I dont go here at least once a week I get a bit out of sorts.<br/><br/>Vegie Spring rolls are awesome every time. So fresh and full of flavour.<br/><br/>Mixed vegetables with Tofu and Satay sauce is a dish I could eat every week until i die.<br/><br/>Its BYO (yes kids.. you can even bring a slab here.. just ask very nicely and tip well)<br/><br/>Its brilliant fresh tasting fantastic food and I would recommend to anyone that they go here rather than taking a lucky dip with your Vietnamese restaurants on Victoria Street.<br/><br/>The prices are average.. you will be spending around $15 - $19 for mains.<br/><br/>4 of my friends and I dined last week at a cost of $86 including corkage, mains, entrees and other drinks.<br/><br/>love love love love love this place.
John Carver
Super good laksa and so cheap! If this is wrong I don't wanna be right.

Surprisingly Lovely. To be honest it isn't the most appealing place to dine, however the food and staff were fantastic. Highly recommend the schezuan beef.. MMmMMmm
RK Food
Went with a group of friends, lovely staff, amazingly delicious food and very cheap! Would go back again

I love Vietnamese food, and this place has by far the best vermicelli bowls I've ever had. The sliced pork and beef in vine leaf bowls are really great dishes, and only $8.50!! The spring rolls are delicious too, and the pan fried noodles are another good option. My most frequent dinner spot on Brunswick st by a long shot.
Jemima
Miss Thailand. Food is nice and fresh and very well priced.
Lucy
Over rated. This place is really over rated in my opinion. There are dozens of better Vietnamese places in Melbourne. I think they've got cocky and have really let the quality go because I used to like it. The ingredients just aren't fresh these days.
Lauren Shay
Cheap and filling. I tried the tomato rice with crispy chicken! It cost me $9 dollars and I couldn't eat it all :(<br/>Fantastic service and very extensive menu. Definitely will visit again.
Jesse
From the second we stepped inside, the waiter hassled us nonstop to order. We only took a few minutes to decide but in that time he came to ask us if we were ready 5 times. We should have taken this and the fact that we had to ask to look at the lunch menu at 12.30pm (cheaper and with different dishes) as a sign to leave. So when we "finally" ordered, we pointed clearly to the laksa and lemon chicken on the LUNCH menu (both approx $9, seemed quite reasonable). Food was nice, nothing special, but way too much to finish. The bill came out and we were very surprised to find it came to almost $30, over $10 more than we had been expecting. We ask why this is and the two waiters muddledly try to say that it was because we had ordered the large size, which we had not. We had VERY clearly ordered from the cheaper lunch menu and definitely did not want so much food (we are two slight females so I can't see how he could have presumed otherwise). Given that one had to request the lunch menu at lunch time, I got the feeling that they probably pull this trick quite often on people so unless you enjoy being ripped off, I would steer well clear of this place.

VietRose is the best Vietnamese that I've found in Melbourne. Have been here twice this week already & will keep coming back on a regular basis to enjoy the great service, great atmosphere& absolutely divine food! If you haven't checked this place our yet then I highly recommend you try it as you won't be disappointed!
Kaukauhotel
Best on Brunswich. There several choices for Vietnamese food on Brunswick street. Most with much nicer design than Viet Rose. Don't be fooled. Just go here and bask in flavorful delight.<br/><br/>Items Ordered:<br/>1) Hot and Sour Soup<br/>2) Fried Rice<br/>3) Vietnamese Chicken Salad<br/><br/>FOOD = Best Vietnames I've had in OZ thus far..<br/>ROOM = Non-fancy but clean, no-frills, table service but counter service atmosphere.<br/>SERVICE = Prompt, clear and quick<br/>NOISE = Insignificant<br/>RECO = Try your Viet Favs here and taste them at their best
Food Fiend
Yum Yum. They do truly awesome veggie soups here! Friendly fast service and it's nice and central. This is one of my regulars.
Bennis
Terrible Service. They do not have beef phó on the menu but we ordered the sliced beef soup instead and made sure we asked for NO beef balls.<br/><br/>Alas, the dish came out with more beef balls than a stock farm.<br/><br/>So we told the manager our problem and he gave us a bowl and said "pick them out yourself" ... We explained that we specifically asked for no beef balls so they took the dishes back to the kitchen and removed them from the soup (could still taste them in the stock).<br/><br/>I hope this was a one off because we were appalled.
Mandy
The best dish is the laksa I buy it often. The rest of the meals I have tried aren't great but the laksa is the best in Melbourne!!!!!
Lachlan B
Some things are good, some are bad.. Come here for lunch all the time. Beef cubes are _great_. Really good. Chicken Laksa also very good (very creamy, which I like, some people don't). Lemongrass and chilli chicken pretty average - steer clear of that one!
Jay Morrison
Should of read reviews first. We didn't enjoy it at all - food was way too bland and over priced for what it was. Sort of place that should be charging a lot less, especially near so many better options.
Lars
Just not tasty. We got take-away. The rice paper rolls were and the cold vermicelli with spring rolls were both ok, but the chicken noodle soup (pho) was just terrible compared to anything on Victoria St. The tom yum was far too sweet. In both dishes the chicken looked like it came from a can.
Bridie Murphy
Not a big fan. I went here because I read that it was really good, but I was just really disappointed. There isn't anything special about it at all. I got a vegie dish and it somehow lacked vegies...not sure how...and lacked general tastiness. I'm not quite sure how its rating has gotten so high...
Sandy Fernee
Had to add a lot of soy sauce, chilli & sweet chilli to make this anything but bland
