Review Fitz Curry Cafe - Fitzroy

Tim Firth
Highly recommend this family run restaurant. Eaten here several times & it's always a wonderful & consistent experience. Warm & friendly welcome from the very hard working owners who are also the chefs & the food is fresh, delicious, generous & well priced. Loads of Vegetarian & Gluten free options & you can BYO Wine. The whole experience just feels genuine & comforting - music & lighting is perfect. Thank you for providing such excellent hospitality & look forward to seeing you again soon.

Chose this place because it was conveniently across the street from the venue. We felt very welcomed on entering, the food smells were amazing, the staff friendly and the decor, while very simple, was comfortable. Plenty to choose from on the menu. I'm not an Indian cuisine expert, but I know what I like (😉) and this food was seriously good. Generous serves, great flavours, good quality and really great value for money. We enjoyed being able to watch the cooking happen, but having an open kitchen meant it was quite warm in there, would be lovely on a Winter day. This one is going on our favorites list.

I’ve been going here for 25 years. Highly recommend. Consistently excellent. Fitz is my go-to Indian cuisine.

Absolute fantastic place. Food is certified true Indian Food. Staff are very friendly. The atmosphere is very good. Would eat there 1000 times a day. Recommend the butter chicken 💯.
Tobias Skjelvik
Ordered the chicken vindaloo, chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, basmati rice and the rice with nuts mixed into it. The food was really good, vindaloo was comfortably spicy. Would recommend the nutty rice over basmati. One rice is enough for two people. The garlic naan was good, but I think there was too much butter, would try their regular naan. All in all really good food, nice staff. Great place! Good prices! Stop by here.

Fitz curry cafe has become my favourite place to order food. I orderd saag paneer and gobhi aloo which was delicious and it was not too oily like other restaurants. Keep it up fitz curry cafe!! cant wait to come for a dine in soon.

Seriously good Butter Chicken. Layers of flavour from the tandoori chicken pieces to the buttery creamy sauce. I could happily relish Fitz Curry Cafe's Butter Chicken every day . A must must try !

The tastiest most delicious Indian food I have ever had.

Still drooling from our recent visit at @thefitzonbrunswickst
The food, the vibe of place and service is absolutely amazing.
.
.
With indoor and outdoor seating, it is perfect for all weather conditions - as we have in Melbourne!
.
.
Coming to the food.. as usual it was hard to decide what not to get - but yet decision had to be made and we went for -
* kickarse scramble with Salmon
* Japanese noodle salad with salmon skewers.
* Moroccon M’hanncha which is baked filo pastry
* and Hangover cure & bery berry crush smoothies.
.
.
The food tastes amazing and the portion size is good. The dishes are nominally priced and this is definitely perfect breakky/ lunch/ brunch destination.
.
.
Much much recommend.

Thank you so much for the warm service. Shall visit again whenever I come back to this city.

Fitz Curry Café - I can't speak highly enough of this place which is austere and rustic in appearance, but punches above its weight in terms of heart and good tasting Indian cuisine. This is my idea of a restaurant-standard sub-continental food but at lunch bistro prices. None of these comments are at all tongue-in-cheek - this is my favourite Indian restaurant in the Inner North, and the best in Fitzroy by a mile.

The vegetable Samosas, the Malia Kofta, the Mukha Paneer, vindaloo or the butter chicken (not to mention the garlic naan) - all these are what you would expect from your high quality local Indian eatery. To the extent these things matter (and I for one think they do) the owners are humble, unassuming and very friendly. And they have a ready supply of Kingfisher beer! If you are in this part of town and consider yourself and Indian food lover - add this place to your list.

A staple in our household. Have ordered home delivery MANY times and also dined in with friends and every time we get consistently fantastic food.

The service is always friendly. I really love this place - and the eggplant dish!!

This is our first time to this restaurant, it’s beyond our expectation and the food is really good! Everything taste just right and we really had a great dinner experience with friendly staff and great recommendations from staffs. We will definitely come back again soon!

Just not a very good meal. I ordered a takeaway saag paneer, chicken tikka masala and a lamb biryani which was the worst- totally inedible- overcooked rice with very little flavour and very under seasoned, it was bland brown mush with not very much lamb or vegetables to make it interesting. We ate about a quarter of it then threw it out. The saag paneer was just ok- underseasoned and lacked the zingy freshness I look for. The chicken tikka masala lacked any creaminess and again was a little bland. Even the roti lacked freshness (though that happens with takeaway). The lassi looked like it was made with mango syrup rather than actual mango. Overall would not recommend.

I have been going to this restaurant for a long time and it doesn't disappoint in terms of Indian curry. The vegetarian entree platter is excessively generous!
Kristine Lapika
Best Indian I have had in Melbourne and very reasonably priced! Fantastic service and fantastic flavours with all the curries. The Lamb Madras and Chicken Masala were a real treat.

I went with my fiance for a dinner date. we were looking for nice Indian restaurant in a city. we came across fitz curry cafe. we loved the butter chicken and vegetarian curry they had to offer. I definitely recommend this Indian restaurant to all.
Linda
Delicious and well priced curry! I haven't dined in before but I always get take away. Portion sizes are great you won't be left hungry! The butter chicken and somosas are always a winner for me!

We went here last week after the footy and for me its probably the best curry ive tried in melbourne. We ordered the butter chicken and eggplant dish (i forget what its called) with nans. As soon as I took my first spoonful of butter chicken i closed my eyes and felt like i was in heaven. The eggplant dish was also amazing. Will be back for sure.

Very tasty !!!! we had a lamb korma and chicken
Rice with peas and nan bread, generous servings and glass of red, service was great
Thanks guys we"ll be back keep up the great food .

We ordered chicken Biryani, Tandoori Chicken, Naan, Laccha Parantha and Chicken Tikka masala. Its the most awful food I have eaten so far, the food lacked favours( the very thing that defines Indian cuisine). The breads were dry and lacked the basic presentation. If you really want to eat good Indian food try Punjabi Curry Cafe which is a much better restaurant than this place. I hope you improve your food.

Maybe I picked the wrong night but found this place to be really lacking in the cleanliness aspect.
Seems like the same utensils are used over and over without getting washed, I asked about it and they replied its the method they use in the cooking process.
Sally Tsang
Decor is slightly dated (minimal change from when we were here about 4 years ago, and no change in menus), but food is great, mango lassi is really yum and staff are friendly. We'll be back!
Ab_cat
We ordered delivery, it all arrived on time and sure it is ok, it's nothing special. Being pretty much the best rated Indian we were expecting authentic brilliant food. We were fairly underwhelmed with the flavour and the substance of the dishes (spinach paneer, rogan josh, chicken curry) they were pretty basic "Australian Indian". It's great if that's what you after. If you want and expect authentic regional Indian dishes and find it... please tell me where you find it!

Great Indian place. Best I've had in Fitzroy! Uses good ingredients, such as whole meal organic flour in roti. Meat is tender too. Staff friendly. Love it and will be back!
Jonnoyeo111
Great, great service.
Ordered the chicken tika masala, and lamb korma. Requested for them to be mild and they came out perfect. Tasty, flavorsome spices, and the chef even came out during the meal to check if it was too spicy or not, and offered us yoghurt!

Garlic naan was tasty, buttery and just the right amount of garlic.

First Indian we've tried since moving to Melbourne in 2 years, that we'll come back for.

5/5

Very good food. Just the perfect balance of spices and flavours. Service was great, nice little joint. Would definitely go back again soon.

Very good cheap Indian place! Food and service is great. Pride makes it look cheap, but food is amazing. I really recomended the place regards of what it looks

First Indian Restaurant encountered during my first week in Melbourne !
We ordered a chicken biryani. They served us complimentary papad and green chutney first. The chutney was good. Biryani was pretty good. I had Indian food after a long time and for the first time during my visit to Australia so I think I liked it pretty much. The presentation and serving portion was good and sufficient. We sat outside, enjoyed the natural air. 14 dollars for the biryani and I think it was worth it. :)

Best curry I've had in Australia so far.

We've more or less given up on Indians here as we are from the UK and we find them to be either bland or too salty on this side of the world.

The place itself is a little rough around the edges, but the friendly staff and food make up for any shortfall in the decor.

Naans are just the right mix of fluffy/crispy and the portions are excellent value for money.

Will stick to this place when we need a decent vindaloo in future.

Ashleigh Dougherty
Too greasy and didn't taste very fresh. It was your typical heated up curry taste and not freshly made (at least that's how it tasted). Wouldn't order again and am looking forward to trying other Indian places nearby.

Heard good things, so decided to call up 10 minutes before our arrival and make sure there is a table vacant for 8 of us. Lady on the phone confidently said 'yes yes there is room for you, see you in 10'. We get there in just under 10 minutes and bam, table had been given away and that was the only spot that could accommodate 8.I'm sure the food is great but there is no excuse for incompetence.

My first mistake here was forgetting to take photos to share! My bad!!!

After recently moving from Sydney, we've been on the hunt for Melbourne's best Indian and to date, lost count of the different recommendations. Fitz Curry Cafe was next on our list.

From the outside, the Fitz Curry Cafe is unsuspecting: busy road, no parking and somewhat old decor - but don't let that fool you as the food is sensational!

Between 4 people we order a 4 entrees: a sizzle platter, lamb kebabs, samosas and chicken tika. Massive yummo!

For mains, we opted for the butter chicken, beef vindaloo, lamb madras and prawn curry. All dishes were brilliant but the prawn was the stand-out dish!!!! Sweet but spicy! The kashmiri naan was good but not great - some more pistachio and fruit would have been nice; however the garlic was filled with punch!!!!

Great Indian and close to home! Thanks!!!
Jessica.guzzetti
I went there a couple of nights ago for dinner. Having worked in an Indian restaurant before, i'm pretty fussy about Indian food, but i've been extremely satisfied with the flavours and the freshness of the ingredients. There was a mistake in the order we got, but we enjoyed the curry and, at the end of the night the waiter prepared the curry we orderd to take away. I enjoyed both the food and the friendly staff. Highly recommend and i'll definitely go back soon.

Best value and quality food. You will never be disappointed with dining at Fitz Curry Indian Restaurant. the food, service and price are all exceptional - quality excellent and value for money. all topped off with friendly staff.
Would highly recommend.
Joson.joy
Incredible Indian. Great food and great service from the staff at Fitz Curry. Definitely reccomend the chicken Saag and garlic naan bread. Great price and very satisfying!
Indafood
It took over a year but I have now found the best curry house in Melbourne. It is great value for money, offers friendly service and most importantly the taste is deliciously great. It serves free range chicken and natural spring lamb which is just an added bonus to what will now be the place to satisfy my curry cravings.
Hide And Seek
Try the butternut pumpkin masala if your palate is yearning for something creamy and sweet, or the malai kofta – cottage cheese and potato dumplings cooked in curry – if you’re after something spicy with a twist.
Unfortunate_socks
Really good food, lovely service and good value for money. Had the Onion bhaji- delicious- and malai kofta was amazing. Will definitely be going back. Thankyou! :)
Marisa
Food came out super quickly. Friendly service. Tasty food and reasonably priced.

I have never been let down. Customer for over ten years. Consistency and home delivery is always on time. Good food happy staff. Love it.

Great Indian food. Great value for money, massive serves so don't order up big. Fantastic flavours, one of the best I've visited in Melbourne.
Paul.brock
Best Indian in Australia. I've been to many an Indian restaurant. I try the same meal at each one on the first occasion as my litmus test as to whether it's a certain standard and worth returning to for further indulgence. That dish is Chicken Vindaloo. So easy to stuff up by being too hot or cold or the chicken having had that weird chicken softener applied. Here, everything was perfect, some heat, not too much. Plenty of delicate flavours still persisting. Decent organic chicken. And the chef is a really genuinely nice guy, cooking away right in front of you. And he remembers your name, even if it's been a while. Just go there.

Best Indian restaurant in Melbourne. This is the best Indian restaurant that I've ever been to.......and I'm Indian! Naw, I'm not Indian. That was a joke, but I should have been, considering how much I love the food. This is honestly the best Indian food that I can recall eating for years.

Every dish I have had at this restaurant is outstanding. My favourite is the baingan patyala (eggplant), and I'm not even a vegetarian! It's just an incredible, flavoursome dish. My other personal favourite is the Lamb Balti, which is so incredible that just thinking about its thick sauce and hulking pieces of lamb brings a tear to my eye.

My wife and I always buy a vegetarian samosa each because they're outstanding. Don't bother buying the meat samosa. It's usually dry, and lacks the flavour of the veggo option.

In Fitzroy, an area filled with bland, ho-hum cafés all serving avocado smash, corn fritters of some variety, and, very unfortunately, some sort of arty-ass chicken burger with "asian" coleslaw (what the hell is "Asian" food?), this restaurant sticks out because it offers you something different.

For those people who are interested in having foreign food that isn't thai, or (Chinese) dumplings, Fitz Curry is perfect. If not, then I'm sure there's a dumpling restaurant somewhere for you to try.
Juliehauritz
Beautiful flavour. I went along to this cafe because it had listed gluten free and vegan options, plus it mentioned it was organic. I really enjoyed the flavour of the meal and really well priced. I was disappointed with the mango chutney which sadly was super sweet like a jam, with a jelly texture rather than the traditional chunky style mango chutney.
It was nice to see the kitchen and the chefs working but the dining area was very small and cramped with little room for the waitress to move around.
Overall I would recommend eating there and the eggplant dish was delicious. Next time I'd ask for it hot though. The medium was very mild.
I would advise the owner to adjust the menu to clearly mark the vegan and gluten free options as it really isn't clear. I'd come back again when I'm visiting Melbourne.

Great meal before a night out.. I went to Fitz Curry Cafe after reading the reviews here on Urbanspoon and the place really lived up to the hype. I went with my girlfriend and her sister, one of whom is vegetarian, the other gluten intolerant, the menu had more than enough options to cater for this. We had a Lamb Madras, Spinach Kofta Curry and Navaratan Korma, all were delicious, this place is easily better than most of the curry restaurants I have been to in London. Highly recommended!

I have been having cravings..... My bf and I have been looking for a tasty, inexpensive Indian restaurant for ages and Fitz Curry definitely ticked all the boxes. Clean, staff super nice and attentive, and food fresh. We ended up going twice in 5 days. Highly recommend the Malai Kofta and any Lamb curry, the meat is super tender. And you can't pass on the garlic nann either. Oh no...cravings are setting in again

Fantastic as always

Awesome curry!. Very delicious curry, authentic and full of flavour. Everest used to be my favorite curry place, but I think they've gone down hill, Fitz Curry Cafe takes the crown for king of Melbourne curries as far as I'm concerned.
Susan
Twice in 2 weeks.... I LOVE THIS PLACE! Went the first time because the previous review about the Glasgow curry. Being from Glasgow I know how good the curries are and this DID NOT disappoint! Excellent flavour, lovely meat. Had Butter Chicken, Chicken tikka, lamb something and beef madras. All winners. Check this place out. Oh, and BYO wine. Happy tummy.

Best Indian food in town. Great friendly service and the food was wonderful. Tandoori chicken a stand out and highly recommend the fish curry. A little less salt for our palette would have made it perfect.

Our waiter was very graceful and made great recommendations .... So cheap.

Wow factor in an unexpected pocket.
David_beaton_macleod
Best Indian food outside of India and Glasgow!. As the title says...this is the BEST Indian restaurant outside of India and Glasgow!
Fantastic authentic Indian food, brilliant service. Amazing to sit and watch the chef cook, adding different spices to his artwork.
Great take-away also. Having travelled throughout the world, this is the only Indian restaurant I rate that is as good as you would get in India or Glasgow!
Took a group of people there before, and they all agreed.
Grace Harman
Best Indian food in Melbourne!. We have started eating out at Fitz Curry Cafe almost weekly because we've become addicted! The curries are all fresh and delicious, with a pleasing variety on offer. The naan bread is gorgeous and flavoursome without being greasy. The staff are all lovely too!
Brad Smith
Very authentic, great customer service I definitely rate it as some the best Indian I have eaten.

Yummy & Cheap - $12.95 for Meat Dish!. This place is so cheap & tasty - $12.95 for meat dishes such as Chicken Korma & Beef Madras & $11.95 for a mixed veg dish. (sizing is exactly the same portions as you would expect from other Indian places) The chicken korma as especially creamy and tasty with the chicken cooked to perfection. The beef madras gravy was tasty too but half our beef was tender whilst the other pieces were hard as rock and dry (obviously re-cooked)

The wholemeal roti was surprisingly tasty as we were expecting it to be dry but it was just right, not too floury either. Nonetheless, we'd give this cute little restaurant another try and do recommend it. Service was friendly and swift too.
Culicanary
Good but not great. We tried here because like many of our favorites they are not open on Monday. Mumbai Chicken was tasty. Rogan Josh while sof (not tender) was dry and a little bland. Bread was good. Onion Bhaja? Was nice. A little doughy but very close to what I have had on the streets of India. Good. I wouldn't say cheap.
Fatjohnny
Been here a couple of times now. Always good tasty curry and, unlike many in Melbourne, the flavour is not obliterated by salt. Excellent value too.

D.E.L.I.C.I.O.U.S. Every dish was delicious and it had a great atmosphere. My favourite was the Punjabi Chicken Curry- a must try! The staff were lovely, very attentive and helpful. As an added bonus, it is reasonably priced and BYO! Happy Days!

Amazing Indian.. Possibly the best Indian in Melbourne! The staff are lovely, the food comes out quick and most importantly the food is delicious!
Cant go past the Tandoori chicken. Always cooked perfectly. Definitely worth a visit.
Emma
Don't be fooled by cafe type setting. This is the best value for money Indian i have been to. Samosas, Butter chicken & garlic naan were delicious!
YoungNic
Fitz Curry for the Best Curry. We always get great food from Fitz Curry Cafe. Thick, creamy curries and amazing meat and breads from the tandoor - it's becoming a regular on Sunday nights at our house, it's so good!
Arvk22
Great environment, Delicious food!. I've been to Fitz Curry many times and it never disappoints!
The staff are friendly, and respond quickly when needed.
The food is flavoursome, with a homely feeling, and it is very affordable.
A great place to dine in or take away, would definitely recommended!
James Horton
Great unpretentious Indian. Will be back.

3rd time in a row forgot the garlic naan! Not happy after paying and tipping! Amazing curry but get your act together with the online orders!!!
Good Food Lover
Consistently good food. The food here never disappoints. There are plenty of other trendy, stylish places around, if you need that sort of thing, but if you are after excellent Indian food and wine at very reasonable prices this is definitely the place to go. The staff are always welcoming.
Fitzie
Always great. I've eaten here for years. The food is superb - eat in or take away. Don't expect five star service (although its always friendly it can be a tad disorganised) but the quality of the food is consistently good. My favourite Fitzroy local.
Paul Doughnut
Looooooong wait. Food was reasonable punjabi fare (not exceptional, not bad either) but we waited almost 50 min after ordering because take away took priority and there was only one chef. we ended up being in there for an hour and a half.
Phil
Disappointed. The three main courses, two vegetarian and one chicken, were below average compared to the same or similar dishes I have experienced at other Indian restaurants. They lacked flavour and spice and visually were also bland. The peas pulao was also disappointing, it could have done with some spices. Unfortunately for me the only enjoyable part of the meal was the mango lassi.
Pete
Very disappointed. Bland and uninspiring food. The chard grilled chicken curry did not have an ounce of brown on it. Give it a miss if you enjoy good traditional Indian flavors.
Janet Flamethrower
I love you Fitz Curry Cafe.. The curry's are superb, the lamb is always tender and perfectly cooked, the beef is delicious, chewy, and melt in your mouth magnificent and the chicken is free range and always done beautifully. I've been going there for years and very rarely vere from my favorites, the makhani, korma and madrass are particularly delightful and Fitz make a mean garlic naan which you swing through the thick sauce in your favourite dish or mop up the last bits on your plate.
Sure the restaurant isn't much to sit in so I usually get it packaged to go, light a fire, pour a glass of shiraz and enjoy my soft, fragrant beautifully cooked curry's take-away.
Melita Gul
The curry was good. A good price and decent servings, the only downfall was that by the time I got home just down the road, the naan was stone cold :-( Plus the place was hard to find as there are two number 44 johnston st's!! But the curry tasted great
Lozchops
I love this place. Everything is damn delicious, especially the eggplant. The waitress is hilarious, daring me to attempt to say what I'm ordering and laughing with me as I twist my tongue. It's fantastic food with pretty good prices. Triple yum.
Elle Bea
One and Done. I ordered one samosa, mali kofta and rice. The curry sauce had the smell and taste of tomato soup. The kofta dumplings were too mushy and quite bland. I ate one dumpling and gave up. What happened to the complex and beautiful curry with sultanas and nuts and a good balance between sweet and spice that typically accompanies dishes like navratan korma and mali kofta? On the plus side, the service was prompt. I won't be going back.
Charlotte Lamont
Best in Melbourne. Hands down the best curry in Melbourne. I could eat here every day.
C M
Good value curry house. There are a lot of Indian restaurants in Melbourne and i can honestly say i'd drive past most to get to Fitz Curry. It has dumpling house decor, made only slightly less basic by the occasional faux-authentic knick knack.
But if they skimp on the fitout and pass the value on in the form of quality and inexpensive prices, which they do, i'm ok with that. I'm more than ok, in fact.
It's hard to say one naan is better than another, but the plain and keema naans here stick in my memory more than any place i can think of. And the curries are great too.
If you're looking for simple, quality, Indian with great value, Fitz Curry is a must-do.
Alyssia Storey
Best Curry in Melbourne. Hands down, the best indian in Melbourne.

The atmosphere of the restaurant isnt much but the taste makes up for it!
Jac.H
Amazing alu gobi and alu paratha!
Tilly
Yum. This is my favourite Indian in Melbourne. I even cross the river for it. (I know, drastic measures!).
Nicholas Purcell
Best Indian in Melb. Really love this place. Really great quality food and consistent. Yes - if you're wondering whether you'll be happy going to Fitz Curry - yes you will. Do it.

Long time customer. I've been a patron of this restaurant for over five years.
The curries are tasty and the prices wont break the bank.

Service is decent in house and take away orders are sorted out in around 20 minutes.

Staff are friendly and the room is cozy.
Deluxe
Quality Indian Cusine. Consistent quality of food. Reasonably priced food
Dan Ryan
Used to be my favourite take away haunt, but after my last bland meal, minus one of the dishes I ordered but never got delivered (I was told when I called back that we never ordered it, but I'm pretty sure we paid for it) I'm not so keen anymore.
Deefa
Tasteless, sameness. Ate here back in May 2009 late in the evening and there were very few customers. The four curries we ate were not spicy, tasted the same even though they were supposedly different on the menu. When I order a vindaloo it better burn my mouth and not have the same heat/taste as the tikka. Whatever this place once reputedly was no longer exists. Don't waste your time here.
Daniel Walters
My favourite curry joint is and always will be the Fitz Curry Cafe.
