Review Coconut Palms - Fitzroy

Dan
Feb 2021 dine in at evening. Ordered special fried rice. Awesome great taste of flavor! One downside is the evening menu dont have much rice and noodle dishes and dont even have the typical Vietnamese pho and rice in the menu. They have perhaps u have to ask for it. If it not in menu i couldn't be bothered asking tbh. But this special fried rice is absolutely đź‘Ť. And hopefully they have beverages list in the menu or on table. I'm sure not just me sick of asking what do u have thats not in the menu.

I've found the food to be consistently excellent. The ingredients are fresh and the flavours are intoxicating. The fried rice is some of the best I've ever had. I've tried roast duck fried noodles from a lot of places, and Coconut Palms makes the best by far. When I tried the fried noodles with bean curd and vegetables, their wok imparted a beautiful smokiness. Evidently, I couldn't speak highly enough of the food. The customer service is good, too.

Great tasting Vietnamese, the satay skewers were brilliant, but a little small because I wanted another serving, the coconut fried rice was perfect, but nothing beats a flawless deep fried banana! So good.

Really great Vietnamese food and service, and the prices are reasonable. I'll definitely be back!

My pet peeve? Businesses that advertise one thing at the window to get you in and then charge you something else at the counter. I walked in to order takeaway after checking out the menu posted at the shop window. The dish I wanted was $15. After going in and ordering, I was told it was $17. I questioned the counter woman to be told that the window menu was lunch prices (note, nowhere on the menu in the window does it indicate that it was the lunch menu). I picked up a menu at the counter to see the dish was priced $16 (wait, what?! $15 at the window but $16 on the "lunch" menu??) on that menu only to be told by her that there was another menu (ie. The "dinner" menu) that listed it at $17. Come here if you want to pick a menu, any menu, and play Russian roulette with what they'll charge you.

I can't say what I order because it's not on the menu but when I order the food is the best I have ever tasted if I could eat here every single day I would but I live so far so I visit every now and again

A good place to grab a quick bite for lunch. Their selection is good and the food comes out very quick. I usually come here for the laksa as it’s good value and super tasty.

I’ve been here many times. Reliably good standard. Some dishes better than others. Recommend grilled quail, eggplant and silky tofu, fried salt n chilli tofu, Peking duck pancakes. The staff are always happy and friendly. Cheap cheerful and quick. BYO a bonus.

Coconut palms at Fitzroy. Maybe it is not my type of Vietnamese food. The stir fried flat noodle combination was just normal and pretty much you can find from other Chinese or Vietnamese restaurant. Thus it won’t fit in my favourite dishes although I am a big fan for Vietnamese street food.

I ordered the satay crispy chicken noodle soup. Initially was annoyed that it would cost $1 extra due to an apparent price rise in chicken but my annoyance quickly dissipated once the food was served.
5/5 it was excellent. Super crispy chicken. Delicious satay noodle soup. It was beyond my expectations.
Will happily return but the review loses a star for not updating the prices on your menu.

I've always liked these guys - solid food at decent prices and good service. I've had the pho, vermicelli and broken rice and portions are always generous and flavour is always dependable.

My favourite restaurant in Fitzroy. So much to choose from the lunch menu but I am making my way through the list. Two favourites are Jim's Special Fried Rice and Steamed Rice with Chicken and Chilli Lemongrass. Price is cheap compared to everywhere else in the area and the food is always generous and on-point. The service is great and I have to go there at least once a week to get my fix.

It was a late, cold, raining Monday night and Coconut Palms was a beacon of bright warmth. Sure, the standard suburban vegetarian fried rice was all I was willing to ingest among the wealth of items stuffed with prawns, but it was a solid, salty version of the genre.

Visited Coconut Palms on Saturday night with some friends and we were surprised to find the place pretty quiet, considering it was a Saturday night on Smith St! We were a bit skeptical as to how the food would be, but we were pleasantly surprised when the San choi Bao and spring rolls were delicious! Followed by Mongolian beef and satay chicken - YUM! Will definitely be back and would recommend checking it out!

This is a get what you expect kind of place, which, I count as a positive. Decent portion sizes with fresh enough taste, at a price point you're expecting. It won't knock your socks off, but you won't walk out feeling like you've been duped somehow....

The flat rice noodle with bean curd and veggies in spicy Thai sauce is AMAZING! If you're veggo you must try this! And the spring rolls are yum too

A great Vietnamese joint in Fitzroy ! The food was good and they were served quick ! I settled for the combination laksa and they were good ! Great place ! Haven't been there for dinner service, lunch was great and you have some great choices as well ! This place only takes cash, so cash out before you walk in !

We were greeted by an extremely pleasant waiter and promptly seated at a table with ample room for 4 people. He brought a bottle of water to our table and proceeded to fill all of our glasses and then replenished the water bottle without even being asked for us.

We ordered from a fairly extensive menu and the food was prepared and brought out quickly. The food was well presented using fresh ingredients and tasted very nice. In fact although we over ordered we managed to finish all of the dishes.

Throughout the dinner we asked the waiter for several items and these were cheerfully brought over.

Very customer focused service with good quality food.

I have dreams about tofu & eggplant... When we come here, everybody orders the tofu & eggplant... No sharing.... I mean, you could share, but you won't want to.

Have been coming here semi-regularly for years, used to be my favourite Vietnamese. Has declined recently, however take away tonight was inedible. I had one mouthful of beef vermicelli-it looked awful and tasted even worse. The beef was covered in sauce that was slimey and even what I thought would be a safe resort - the Jim's "special" spicy rice had no taste and the flavours were completely off. This is the first review I've ever written, so disappointed will never go back.

We've been here for dinner a number of times, we like this place because it is consistent. Not expensive, friendly staff, good tasty food in a simple setting. The Jim's fried rice is very nice with a distinct chilli bite mixed in with toasted cashews, prawns and calamari as well as the usual fried rice flavours, the rice paper rolls are always very generous serves. Our order was served promptly with a smile. We enjoyed spring roll entree, with garlic prawns (nice but not a strong garlic flavour) and beef in sesame plum sauce mains with the Jims fried rice. Generous serves, Containers offered to bring home what we couldn't finish. Not flash surroundings but recommended for the food.

Service was very good, fast polite and responsive. Tea was unique and tasty. Cold rolls were ok, beef pho was ok. Other meals sounded and looked interesting - wouldn't come back for pho but it was good service.

Head here for Lunch semi regularly nothing special but generally a reliable feed. Pho is good on a Cold day and the Lunch specials are of reasonable price and quality but don't go there expecing too much.

Yes just yes to the silken eggplant. The silken eggplant here with a serving of coconut rice has me happy and satisfied like a pink cheeked fat baby. YUM

Coconut Palms Review. Great Food
Great Value
Great Service
Lunch Menu is extensive and caters for all tastes. Speciality begins with choosing dishes from dinner menu to cater for small or medium groups of people. Recommend, Jimmy's Special Fried Rice with salt & pepper squid and pork spare ribs with black pepper sauce. Sliced fish with ginger sauce is a luxury!! Sizzling Beef-Wow.

Shutdown again for family reasons. Few too many times now... sorry not convinced. Won't try again.

Well that was horrible. Years ago I lived around the corner and would eat here regularly. Tonight I went back because I was in the area and it was the last time. The prices are very expensive. There are so many other Vietnamese restaurants nearly that I can't see why anyone would come here. Go to Richmond instead. $2 per head for tea? Yep. I ordered the spicy fried rice which was not spicy at all and tasted of old grease. It was the first time in my life I haven't eaten a dish at a restaurant. Revolting. Overall it is very expensive and not very Vietnamese. All of the dishes are served coated in cornflour, making them in edible for a celiac who I was with. The good memories have been wiped out. Sorry Coconut Palm, never again.

The yummiest Vietnamese spring rolls. Salt n pepper squid, Vietnamese coleslaw. Always reliable

Delicious. I've been here before and tonight I came here again for dinner. We ordered the same dishes of Chicken lemongrass curry and a plate of green vegetables in oyster sauce. All reasonably priced. But that curry sauce was divine - if I could order a bowl of just the sauce I would! Simply delicious. I highly recommend.

Great place to start a night out. Fast, friendly, efficient and gret value. We love going here with a group of friends and sharing lots of different dishes. It's great to take the staffs advice when asking to try something different. The soft shell crab is a must while taking time to read the menu!! Love this place

Really disappointed dining here the food wasn't good. Not worth spending your money here unfortunately. Service was really great but the food was just really average for the prices you are paying.

Pretty good.. Despite being the only vietnamese restaurant on smith st, this place doesn't offer pho here during dinner service. instead it serves dishes like lemongrass chicken and stuff like that, which seems to be more inclined towards western palates. however, they were kind enough to make us bowls of pho, which made us feel excited. pho here is decent enough to satisfy your cravings. my only disappointment was the texture of the noodles. it's slightly rough and not silky smooth as those on victoria st, richmond. but oh well, good enough. vietnamese style iced coffee is surprisingly delicious. strong and sweet, just how i like it. will be back for pho when i crave for it during work.

Rude Service. The food was fine, but the place was really noisy and the waiter was very rude to us. It was a real pity, as the food was quite om.

Terrible. I was a great fan of this restaurant several years ago and today I stopped past for a quick meal, it was absolutely terrible! As a regular to Victoria st for more than 18 years (prior to it becoming trendy to eat pho and dine on Vic st) I was incredibly disappointed with the lack of customer service, the laksa (which used to be excellent at this restaurant prior to the change of owners) looked straight from a packet and filled with watery and weak soup, ingredients looked as if they were quite old and to top things off I was told that they had a "special" for the day that way not on the menu, it appeared to be leftovers and things lying around the kitchen used to constructed a boring mushy coconut and mince dish that was doused in fish sauce. This is now the worst Vietnamese restaurant I have tried in the last few years. Avoid at all cost.

How the mighty have fallen.... We ate at Coconut Palms at least once a week for years - loved it, loved the staff, service, food, the amazing value! Unfortunately, since changing hands, it's a completely different story. Prices up, quality of food down, and the (both still in passable range though), but the killer is that each time we've been back, the staff have been either indifferent / inattentive or just flat out rude. Sad to see you go old friend!
Hangry Eater Of The North East
So-so. Spring rolls were nice, soft shell crab was nice, pho was just ok - there were gristly meat bits and a strange, kind of bitter aftertaste. Service was ok - asked for water which never arrived - but towards the end we got the obvious boot out. My friend was like "gee, they really want us to leave." It wasn't busy, nor was it slow, we thought maybe they were closing but it was 2 hours before close so not sure what was going on there. If I was in the area again, I would try somewhere else.

Gone downhill!

Very bad services! dishonest especially the lady boss, keep speaking in Vietnamese language and tried to ask her staff to con us that rice noodle is sold out which is not because we are quite a large group of people. They want us to order the more expensive dishes. She find a lot of bad excuses when we made complain that we saw someone else eating the rice noodles, saying that they have a minimum charge for a large group of people which she never mention until we found out! all of all, a really bad services, will never go back anymore!

Bad and dishonest service! We went there in a big group of 14 ppl including visitors from overseas. We wanted to order the pho(flat rice noodle soup) but the staff told us it ran out! I was like how can u run out of pho if you are selling Vietnamese food?! Never mind we couldn't be bothered to go to another restaurant since there are so many of us then we had to order the dishes. After we paid the bill we saw some other table ordered pho so we asked the waitress how come other tables get pho? the lady told us because there are 14 of us so we can't order pho,but that's not what you told us before! then she started to give us all these stupid excuse. So basically she just tried to get us order the dishes because it's more expensive than ordering pho! This is just low! And this is not how you do business! If you told us beforehand we would've understand and order some dishes as well as pho, but not trying to con our money by saying you ran out but on the other hand serve another table that! Never going back!

The best pho soup in Melbourne

No nonsense Vietnamese. Fresh prawns & veggies with lemongrass & chilli were excellent. Rice paper rolls ditto. Recommend this for a cheap dinner out, service prompt & courteous

There was a drawing board pin in our food - rough size about 2cm which could have been deadly had we not noticed it. The restaurant owner decided to charge full price only upon making them remember that they are at fault did they reduce the cistcofvtgat one dish. We had 8 main dishes. I reckon with tgat mistake they should have nit charged us a thing because whoever ate that thing could easily be in hospital
I Know What I Like
Avoid anything they call "crispy"; crispy chicken - dry and tasteless, crispy duck- duck deep fried in batter, utterly awful. Service is perfunctory at best. Salt and pepper squid was quite good. Other staples - spring rolls and Vietnamese pancakes were doughy. Not Coconut Palm's finest moment. I fear popularity had made them throw quality out of the mix and throw higher prices in.

Since reopening post-Xmas break, we visited our old faithful for a mid week dinner. Not only have the prices gone up but so too has the MSG. A real disappointment.

Great cheap lunch. My mate shouted me one of the cheapest lunches in town. Lucky it was also one of the best. We both had the soup with crispy chicken and it was delightful. Add in two green teas and the total bill at $23 - it's all good.

I took my partner here for dinner based on online reviews and can say we weren't disappointed. Great food, nice presentation and incredibly cheap. The Jim's Chicken Curry on the Specials menu was fantastic. Chicken melted in your mouth. We got lots of prawn dishes and they were plentiful and succulent. Also got a squid dish and it was perfectly cooked. All in all, we've both said we can't wait to go back soon. I highly recommend this place!
