Review Le Gourmet Cakes - Fitzroy

I heard a lot about how Victorian food is delicious compared to other states in Australia. All I can tell you is this place serves the best food you can taste at reasonable prices. Definitely lived up to the Melbourne's reputation of great food. Friendly staff and amazing coffee. Definitely recommend it.

Partner and I were really impressed with our brunch and coffee. Big breakfast and pulled pork eggs Benedict amazing portions. Great flavours will definitely be coming back next time we are in the area.

We stopped here for lunch because of the eye catching front window and chill cabinet displays. We liked it so much that we stayed for coffee. Our baguette and deep dish quiche was fresh and delicious. The coffee was excellent and the strudel we ordered was amazing - full of fruit with a light crisp pastry. It was also excellent value into the bargain!

Love this place!! They know my coffee order. Beautiful coffee. Better than most in the street. So consistent. Friendly. Juices are delicious. I often get croissants and paninis too for breakfast. Awesome place and working so well and hard during these hard times. If you’re a local this is the best go to.

Get drawn in by the window. Pick which ever cake takes your fancy. Friendly quick staff. Inside a little drab, mostly in keeping with the local shops. The cakes themselves while not amazing were still good. My lemon meringue pie didnt have much lemon, but it was huge, especially for the price. I would totally go back. The variety of cheese cakes looks too tempting to pass up.

Purchased a lemon slice and 2 macarons on Saturday takeaway. Lemon slice was very dry and breaking apart, macarons had hard bits in them...had to throw them in the bin .

How disappointing... since when you need to put an effort to cut through whip cream...and worst of it they wanted to convicte me that cake is fresh... shame on you 🤮

I am very skeptical about places that don't show the prices. I bought an almond croissant and two palm sized cakes. This totalled to $21.50. The quality was fine, everything was fresh. Though I can buy much cheaper cakes at my local bakery for $3.00. The quality of the almond croissant was the same of Sunny's bakery on Smith Street.

Came for the reviews, left the food for the taste. Maybe an off day but tasteless microwaved food. Oh, and coffee weak.
Exceptional customer service ! So polite and friendly!! Very welcoming :) Cakes are delicious and so is everything on the breakfast menu, everything is so well priced. I feel like a lot of pretentious places these days will charge you $22 for half a piece of toast and and egg but not here. :D Unique ambiance would recommend

Solid coffee although not terribly strong even with two shots. Passion fruit tart had an amazing colour but was simply okay. Staff are exceptionally friendly and polite. Inside while it has some air con is a bit ho hum. Not much effort has been spent dressing it up. Outside is where it's at though. People watching is what it's all about on Brunswick St. Saw a guy walking around in his undies. Couple of old dudes freakin' out by the girls walking by in their summer shorts. Oh and a guy screaming down the road for his girlfriend (did she even exist?) for about half an hour. Lots of internal laughter.

I like window shopping best but it was impossible to resist heading into Le Gourmet Cakes in Brunswick Street and taking away several of the melting moment biscuits we sat in the window display. They have a great range of cakes, slices and biscuits here and that makes deciding on what to have all the more tough. Inside the cafe is pretty averagely decked out and there were breakfast items to order as well as baguettes and savoury pies. We didn’t stay just took away.

Our melting moments served at home with a cuppa was a perfect end to a great day wandering around Fitzroy.

Amazing Pies!! Perfectly crispy on the outside and buttery and moist on the inside !
Quite a lot of options to choose from. Friendly and courteous staff.

My partner and I stumbled upon this place while killing a few hours between a hotel check out and a matinee Broadway show.
Ambient music, nice service and good food.
I ordered the American Pancakes, which had lashings of everything including bacon and ice cream. It was delicious! My one small fault was that the pancakes were a little undercooked, so unfortunately could not quite finish the meal.
My partner ordered the Big Breakfast, which he enjoyed. Only small fault was that the poached eggs were not runny, but I guess we didn't specify.
Would recommend and would return again. Basic yet delicious.
Also, the cakes looked GORGEOUS! We just didn't have any room left for some! Will be back soon (:Mark Hall

Nothing gourmet about their cake. Not that good quality. Ambiance has some what casual hippy style to it but it's food doesn't represent non of that. Pistachio cheesecake we ordered had almond syrupy taste. Cheap coco powdered hot chocolate. Overall rating 2.8*

Is pouring rain and I thought a nice cups and a cake from the window would be a nice way to regroup. All i wanted was a black Chai tea and a cake. I was approached by the server and asked for a"black Chai tea"and a raspberry tart. She walked away and conferred with the coffee machine operator who questioned my order as they didn't know what a black Chai tea was. After explaining it was just tea without milk that seemed to get through to them. After 3 goes at explain what i wanted in the tart line that was procured too. And then the rain started coming through the light fitting into the shop area and they turned out the lights. Pretty ordinary performance really and harder than it needed to be. Pity. It's not hard to do this stuff well and make good money. But knowledgeable attentive staff go a long way to helping the customer part with their money and I'm afraid this shop won't see me again. And for the record the tea was as expected (T2)and the tart dry and tired. A bit like me after the rain..

Run of the mill cafe. The classic Eggs Benedict wasn't executed and the coffee bitter. The Benedict sauce was almost pure mayonnaise and the ham didn't have much flavor. Apple strudel was value and delicious.

Many better choices in the area

Looks can be deceiving. Walking down the street and all their pastries in the window caught my attention. So I gave them a try for brunch.

Ordered ham & cheese croissant, and a apple Danish like pastry.

The ham & cheese was okay, simple, bout what you'd expect. Tad bit burnt too. But a bit pricy for such a thin single slice of ham & dough that was a bit dry.

The apple pastry pretty much crumbled & fell apart. Whether I bit into to or tried to cut it.... Just disintegrated. Moist Flaky is good, but dry flaky is not. For over $20 I was left disappointed. Either has been sitting in window too long or wasn't baked in house, possibly both. The filling did have a nice flavor.
Least the strawberry milk shake was nice.

My partner and I dropped in quickly and grabbed a takeaway caramel slice to share. Our score is based on how extremely yummy the slice was!! 4 out of 5 yumminess.

This place was absolutely terrible. Bad service. No table water. No napkins. No sense of time. No cooking ability. Bacon was cold. Eggs over cooked. Pancakes had come out of a shake bottle. Just no.

Never ever come here again! I ordered babycino for my toddler who is not even 2 yet.. She normally loves her babycino every time we are out. I became suspicious after she had few zip of her babycino and She doesn't even like it, and you know what? They put a coffee on my baby's babycino!! When I asked the barista, he explained to me like it was not their mistake!! Isn't it a Basic knowledge to know as a barista that they shouldn't put coffee on babycino especially when they serve it to kids??? What an idiot!!!! Makes me feel guilty as a mum to bring my baby there!!

Wholesome food, superb coffee!. Popped in today for a late lunch and caffeine hit and was pleasantly surprised by the flavour and quality on offer here. We shared a chicken & avocado ciabatta - the bread was beautifully fresh, the chicken succulent and the avocado was perfectly ripe. The serving size was ample for sharing as well.

Our coffees were excellent, smooth yet offering good depth of flavour, and served hot enough that it can be enjoyed over 10 minutes or so rather than the lukewarm temperature that many other cafes seem to default to.

Service was pleasant and efficient, couldn't ask for more really. Will definitely pop in again whenever we're in town!

Lovely food, sweet or savory. I have just moved back to Fitzroy and Le Gourmet Cakes had become my default coffee/breakfast/lunch while I am getting my house livable.

I don't understand why this place had such a low score on Urbanspoon, I have eaten here multiple times and each has been good enough for me to keep coming back.

I am very picky about coffee and I find it lovely at Le Gourmet. I have sampled many of the pastries, sweets and have just had a lovely savory pie.
The two Asian gentleman who are usually here are quiet but earnest, I don't get why the service here had been bagged, it is more than enough without being in your face.

So I recommend you give it a go, I will certainly be coming back!

Terrible service. Came here last week. walked in and sat down. was not greeted. had to stand up to order a coffee. After order I watch at least 10 people walk in, order and receive their coffee before me. I ordered first!! so I got up and left. won't be back.... ever...

FREE LOYALTY COFFEE - NOT EXACTLY FREE. I have a loyalty card for coffee here, buy 7 coffees get one free.

I decided to get a large soy this morning, not because I knew it was free but because I was exhausted and really needed the extra kick. When the barista saw that I would be redeeming the 'free' coffee today, he asked me what size I usually buy to which I replied - medium. He then asked me to pay the difference saying "If you always buy medium you should get a medium coffee for free, not a large"

The loyalty program is to reward to loyal customers and to push them into coming back day after day. If you didn't want to run a loss at the end of the day you shouldn't offer it.

It's $1.00

Also, no where does it state "The free coffee will be the same size as you normally purchase"

It's misleading.

Hefty pastries, not lightweights. When I think of French bakeries, I have light, delicate pastries in mind. Pillowy croissants, fragile fruit tarts... The three things I got from Le Gourmet Cakes to have at home with coffee are in a different weight class, though. But not in a bad way. The flourless mini chocolate cake feels substantial in my hand. The Danish stands high and has the heft of a hamburger. The thick ricotta cheesecake has a topping of swirled chocolate frosting. These things are like the 4-door Citroen of French pastries.

And like a car, one can judge the quality of the make by the extra features on it. F'rinstance, the Danish had a glaze of sugar wash on the upper surface, around the blueberries and pastry cream. Le Gourmet didn't HAVE to do this. Most Danish bakers don't. but it added some sweetness, stiffness and a bit of a sheen to the pastry. The flourless choco-cake had two tubular rolls of dark chocolate on top as decor. Again, not vital to the overall construction of the thing, but they looked fancy and tasted nice. Fillips like that are what separate a top bakery from a mundane one.

Great coffee!. I work around the corner and just discovered this little gem. Easily the best coffee on this street, better than Atomica's across the road. Their freshly baked muffins are delicious, and so are the pastries. Yet to try their sandwiches (they look good), but I'll definitely be going back!
Coffee On The M1
Lovely. I enjoyed this place. Sandwiches very tasty and they bake the bread on site. Great selection of cakes and biscuits. Cosy little place. Recommended.

Best coffee on Brunswick street. Come to this area quite often and have found this one of the best coffee I have had in this street.
They stuff so much filling into the sandwich bread roll one is more than enough to fill you lol
My friend had their freshly made juice pretty good from what i can tell

will come again for the coffee
The Garners

Beware. We ordered: scrambled eggs with baked beans and scrambled eggs with sausage. The baked beans and sausage were the optional paid extras for our brunch. We received: a tiny, overcooked portion of scrambled eggs that was rubbery and bland. The sausage was a single, plain microwave re-heated sausage that had been in the freezer/fridge for some time. The baked beans were poured and heated straight out of a can. The resulting dishes were absolutely abysmal. The food was so poor it had to be left - we had to go and find food elsewhere. This place overcharged us for tiny portions that had no thought or concern for paying customers. I don't think that the person who cooked the food would have eaten it themselves - it was such a poor effort that left us feeling insulted and angry.

As well as the poor food, this place also had a back-kitchen ambience of banging plates and barking orders between employees. They do their dishes at the front of shop. This is a new establishment and an amateur operation.
