Review Merry Cupcakes - Fitzroy

Bea Arthur
The cupcakes have the weirdest texture. Kind of rubbery. Flavourless. I was trying to prove that vegan food is just as good as the standard, and served these cupcakes to a few people. I should have tried them first before making that decision. The brownies also had a strange taste and texture, definitely not a brownie. The vanilla slice was the only decent thing here.

Cupcakes are tasty, vegan, good texture, interesting flavours. A bit on the small side though.

Great cupcakes here and cruelty free :-)

Located on the busy Brunswick St of Fitzroy, this cute café with the pink door is convenient for those who want to 'have their cake and eat it too'. Filled with a decent variety of cupcake flavours and other baked sweets, Merry Cupcakes presents healthier, vegan friendly, affordable dessert options to its customers.

A few things to note:

Cupcakes are subtle in flavour, and are not overpoweringly sweet;

They have three different sizes of cupcakes to choose from - the 'bubcakes' are ideal for those (like me) who want to try multiple flavours;

The dessert options (including cupcakes) almost have a 'made-at-home' feel to them - which may be appealing for some, but disappointing for others;

They serve a decent coffee for $3.50, and provide a vast range of tea options;

Café seats about 10 - 12 people (on stools) inside, with three small tables outside - so not a very large space;

Free WiFi access provided;

Friendly owner and customer service staff.

Though a cute little place, perhaps it wasn't an exciting enough experience for me to consider driving a long distance to particularly visit Merry Cupcakes again.

That being said though, I would definitely pop in for a coffee and a few 'bubcakes' when in Fitzroy.

Read more reviews at mmatcommunity.com

A shop devoted entirely to vegan cupcakes is a sure sign that, to quote Bobby Zimmerman, the times they are a-changin'. Dietary requirements previously regarded as "specialised" (read: a pain in the ass for chefs) are becoming increasingly mainstream. Naturally, the On-Trend People's Republic of Fitzroy and Surrounds is the first area to highlight the pervasiveness of veganism as not so much a "fad" but a lifestyle choice. As a vegan of 18 years, I, for one, welcome this increased accessibility to a plethora of foodstuffs (namely baked treats) that until recent times were a hankering for that I would generally have to satiate within the confines of my own kitchen.

Now, I've never had much of a sweet tooth (I'm one of those weird alien creatures that intensely dislikes chocolate) and have never gone out of my way to eat desserts with the exception of nut-based raw creations, because my love of nuts (get your mind out of the gutter!) has led me to believe that I was a squirrel in a previous life. However, I do occasionally enjoy the novelty of veganised versions of things that are ordinarily laden with butter and eggs and cream and all that stuff that the mere thought of is causing my arteries to harden as we speak.

I've always dismissed cupcakes as being twee nonsense the caters exclusively to children and grown adults with a penchant for The Pastels and sewing appliqué woodland creatures on frumpy attire they've found whilst raiding their grandmother's wardrobe and/or the bargain bins at Savers, but Merry Cupcakes has completely changed my perspective on something I never envisaged myself purchasing lest it were for a child (and thankfully none of my friends have started breeding, so that's not something that's likely to happen in the foreseeable future.)

Furthermore (and just indulge me here whilst I wander off on a slightly tangential rant) I've always viewed cakes as a symbol of celebration to be shared; I grew up in a culture where there's no such thing as individual portions when it comes to food. The dining table heaves under a mind boggling assortment of dishes, the sheer quantity of which is enough to feed an entire developing nation, and everyone helps themselves. And continues to do so until they can no longer remain upright and can only communicate through a series of grunts. To me, a cupcake, a single mouthful designed to be consumed by the solitary diner, has always been a symbol of selfishness. THIS IS MY TREAT AND YOU CAN'T HAVE ANY SO SUFFER IN YER JOCKS! That's not what food, especially cakes, is about. They're to be divided up and enjoyed amongst friends and family, not devoured in greedy seclusion.

Getting back on track with Merry Cupcakes, I was faced with quite the conundrum when perusing the menu and realised that I wanted to taste EVERY SINGLE FLAVOUR COMBINATION (excluding the chocolate ones.) My solution? Buy them all and invite a bunch of people over to share them with! Dividing up cupcakes isn't the easiest or most dignified of tasks, but that's by the by. Almost every single one of these little morsels was exquisite. Perfect ratio of icing to cake, perfectly balanced flavours, not overly sweet, and most importantly, wonderfully moist and light without that overpowering taste of sodium bicarbonate that's so often present in vegan cake when used heavy handedly in lieu of eggs as a leavening agent.

The Edna Krab Apple (apple cake with cream cheese icing and a custard centre) is my favourite, closely followed by the Carrot Top (carrot and pineapple cake with cream cheese icing) and Strawberry Fields Forever (strawberry cake with strawberry buttercream icing topped with a slice of fresh strawberry.) I had high hopes for the Save The Date cupcake (sticky date with butterscotch icing) as sticky date pudding is probably tied with carrot cake as my favourite non-raw dessert of all time but the date element in the cake was slightly lacking and the butterscotch icing was disappointingly bland. I think it would have worked better with a sticky caramel fondant rather than buttercream, but that's just a minor issue.

So, there you have it. My view on the cupcake as a symbol of selfishness is unfaltering but heading over to Merry Cupcakes, buying in bulk and sharing with friends allows me to have my cake and eat it too. Literally! And I implore you all to do the same.

The service I received was stellar Even though I ran in just before closing. The gluten free options also tasted great. I would definitely stop by again

Oh yeah best cupcakes ever, get your mouthed around them people. Delish and moist, and not an overload of icing which is a nice change from all the other cupcakes joints.

Girls working there are super awesome and friendly!

10 out of 10!

Been to Merry Cupcakes a few time now and absolutely love their cupcakes - these are by far the best vegan cupcakes I have ever had in Melbourne! The staff are so lovely and I will definitely keep coming back when I need my sweet fix!

Lovely staff and a cute little cafe! The cupcakes them selves are bland, a little dry and the icing tastes like eating sugary margarine. They also have an eftpos minimum of $10 which forces you to buy 3 items as cupcakes are $4 or pay a .30c theiftpos surcharge.

My cupcake from Merry was delicious, though it definitely “tasted healthier”, if that makes sense, even compared to regular vegan cupcakes – KP had a taste and didn’t like the icing in particular but perhaps he could taste the soy in it whereas I could not? Merry Cupcakes on Urbanspoon

Would definitely come back. I was waiting for a friend and decided to wait in this mini cupcake shop, I ordered a blondie (lemon vanilla) and bubcakes. Before I leave, I bought a box of flavours only to finish them in 15 mins. They are soft and tastes so delicious. Highly recommended.

Best cupcakes on brunswick! Personal fave is red velvet with betroot.

Great for so many reasons!. This place is fantastic and strongly recommend going here - I have actually become a regular. The staff are probably the kindest, most friendly staff I have ever met in an eatery. The cupcakes themselves are not only cute but really tasty. They are really moist and not sickly sweet and are apparently healthier than other cupcakes. Going to this place is really an experience in itself - great food, lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. They even have free wifi (which is not common in Melbourne). I have so many favorite flavours including ones that surprise me (Earl Grey / Chai etc) - the citrus ones and the peanut butter and jam ones are ridiculously good too! They have gluten free options and vegan friendly. If you like cupcakes - come here.

I had no idea.... Good coffee, lovely service and scrumptious, moist cupcakes with delicious icing!
It's also only in reading the other reviews that I've come to the realisation that they were, in fact, vegan!?

Meh. Stingey servings of icing. Better vegan cupcakes at A Caterpillars Dream in Kew

Amazing! Delicious cupcakes that are light enough to finish in one sitting. You wouldn't even know they were vegan, so they can be enjoyed by everyone! Cute atmosphere and lovely staff. Definitely a favourite.

Delicious!. A healthy cupcake that tastes better than an unhealthy one? Surely not!

The cupcakes are dense and moist, the frosting is fresh and actually tastes like what it is supposed to - it doesn't just taste like essence. These cupcakes are AMAZING.

OH YEAH. OMG BEST CUPCAKES EVER. If you are vegan finding desert can be punishment torture, but not anymore because MERRY CUPCAKES is the BEST!!!! I recently decided to become vegan and this has been an amazing place for me to satisfy my sweet tooth. These cupcakes are so good anyone would love them, definitely not for Vegans only. The flavors are well thought out and the cupcakes are very moist and delicious. They are very reasonably priced too. I can't wait to have them cater my wedding. Hellz yeah. Yum Yum Yum. Eating one as we speak.... hehehe

Converted. Was never really into the whole cupcake trend, but after going to merry cupcakes... this place is amazing! So cute, really friendly service, amazing cupcakes. Keep going back for the chai, so amazing, or the chocolate and avocado! Really great place!

Best cupcakes in Melb. Ok. Im not vegan, or even vego, and I had no idea the shop was until I left! The cup cakes selection is fresh and there is a good range. moist and flavours are true to the fruits. Eg. Lime really does taste like fresh in season lime. the frosting is light with clean flavours. For example the vanilla actually tastes like vanilla bean (fresh) not the usual crappy essence. The coffee was super cute with great pics in the froth. The vibe in the cafe is also easy and comfortable .
Dancing Around The World
There was only one gluten free option- vanilla with vanilla frosting. Lovely staff and cute space to watch the people pass by whilst eating your cupcake- but quite frankly, I think anyone could make better, fresher cupcakes. Simple frosting, lack luster cake. Give it a miss.

Not so guilty treat. I have become a bit of a regular at merry cupcakes and I really enjoy them they are tasty but also healthier then traditional cupcakes. They also have a good range of organic drinks from Soho i'm a fan of the Ginger beer its very refreshing on a hot day.

Cupcake delivery. Ordered cupcakes today for a colleague. Was very impressed with the service I received from Merry Cupcakes. I sent them an email at 11.15 and they replied almost immediately with order confirmation. They also sent through a photo of the cupcakes to show me what they looked like. I also asked if they could attach a note to the delivery as well and they were very obliging. Fantastic delivery service! Would definitely recommend.

Well worth the visit. I like the concept and find them less sweet than traditional ones but a most delicious way. The Chai is my favourite but every new flavour is worth tasting. Size leaves me wanting more yet so satisfied. Hope we get to see this business grow and grow.

Fresh and friendly. Lovely flavours and beautiful variety- passionfruit was the best.

With flavours like Chai Latte, Chocolado ( chocolate & avocado) and Pumpkin Head for Halloween.

Merry Cupcakes was started up by Mary who loved all things sweet but through studying Nutrition and Dietetics at university and tweaking recipes to make them healthier, discovered her dream of providing a healthier dessert choice to the public that won't taste like you're eating something... *gasp* low-fat.
