Review George's Bar - Fitzroy

Jeffrie Trika
DJ was on and it was a bit quiet ... Limited, ordinary cocktails and wines.

Comedy is great there on Wednesdays. Bar needs more George tho.

So good. Plenty of aggers. Would I have anything else?

I had fun at it, it's not as Seinfeld as I thought it would be but still cool.
Anthony Pisasale
Young hip dive bar, current and retro dj tunes till 3am

Best free comedy nights I've ever been to. Amazing lineup every week, intimate setting. Good meeting spot for drinks + snacks the rest of the week too.

We were having a great night but unfortunately we had absolute tragic service from one bartender. On May 8th I ordered 4 tequila shots and the bartender was extremely rude and had the audacity to give me attitude for asking for a lime with my tequila shots. She repeatedly told me I was rude for not saying please... The entire experience was very unpleasant. Do not take it out on your paying customers if you are having a bad day. I will not be back!

Frogger took all my money and I couldn’t buy my son a birthday present and now my wife won’t let me see him any more. Thanks frogger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for a wonderful reception
This is a friendly place with no problem when it comes to customer service
The people visiting here are very nice as well and with going to
Definitely somewhere you should go

Cool idea. Took way way too long to get a drink at the bar though, even for a busy Saturday. 10 minutes standing twiddling thumbs waiting on a wine is pretty bad, IMO. Ah well.

This is my favourite spot in Fitzroy right now. When you walk in and Dire Straits are playing with Seinfeld quotes all over the walls and cocktails to freakin’ die for - what else do you need in life?! Try peeling me away from this place every weekend for the rest of my life.

Horrible management, not shying away from discrimination against certain groups. We (tourists from the USA) arrived around 11.30 last night for some drinks and were asked by the security if we were on their guest list (they did not have any list or tablets to verify that information). We honestly answered No, and we were denied admission. Two ladies before us were allowed to enter without questions about the “guest list”, and 3 other guys after us entered without any questions as well.

Good for an after dinner drink with plenty of Seinfeld / George Constanza references. The menu speaks for itself ... The Snickers Bar , pretzels ...the Art Vandalay toasted sandwich.

First of all it's a excellent location and the service is truly friendly and wonderful all around.
I would of thought though, for it to be considered a dive bar that it would have a bit more cheesy and have some more novelty items than it did, as it looked too upmarket for a dive bar.

It didn't have as much reference to George or Seinfeld that I would of imagined.

The only part of it which we screamed dive bar was the toilets.

The drink prices with the cocktails are a bit overpriced too.

Many places in Chapel St and elsewhere that you can pick up quality cocktails between $9 to $14.

Unfortunately my friends weren't too fond of their cocktails they had either and wasted them.

I enjoyed my cocktail though.

It's worth a visit, but definitely won't be a regular spot to hang out.

If you're a Seinfeld fan you HAVE to visit this place. Seinfeld paraphernalia everywhere and themed drinks and food items. It's great fun. I really loved the salami toastie I had, and I especially loved the old school arcade games you find there. Such fun!

Came here for the Wednesday night trivia night - really good fun if you are a Seinfeld fan, the questions are pretty difficult!
There needs to be a bigger menu, if there was some hot chips and a few more things that provide a good feed - it would take it to another level.
I can't believe there wasn't even a big salad!!

So much fun and amazing cocktails, they have a dj each friday and sat night !
$5 toaties and plenty of booths to chill out in :)
They also have a seasonal cocktail list and a variety of the classics

I absolutely loved my experience at George's Bar. As a raging Seinfeld fan, I was like a little kid in a candy store enjoying myself while reading many quotes and memorabilia. The cocktails are on the cheaper side compared to other bars on Brunswick Street (George's Bar is just off). I enjoyed a long island iced tea and a Kirin - really happy with this because I am yet to find many places that have it on tap. The set up is great, it's open and spacious but its still cosy and intimate in the booth area. The guy behind the bar was also lovely, really helpful and knowledgeable!
I have no idea why it wasn't packed out on the Friday night we went because I loved it, can't wait to come back.

I'm massive fan of Seinfeld and enjoyed some of the bits and pieces scattered throughout the bar. Cocktails are the best partof the bar. I came with a fiend who never watched the show and didn't enjoy it as much as me.

Came here for a quick drink tonight. Vibes a bit off but cocktails were good. The bloody George was good and came with some nice add ons like ham, olives and pretzels. I was a bit put off by the Mortein can I could see from our booth but besides that the service and layout was fine.

Came here for the trivia night, however tried the toasties which are definitely not even worth $5 a toastie. They really could do with more items on the menu and better waitresses who don't look like they don't want to be there or talk to you. The only good thing about this place was the george and seinfeld references. Great that they have paid homage to george costanza, however not sure if they're expecting to keep this place afloat. My suggestion is to eat before you come here for trivia......

Aside from the fact that it's not overly Seinfeld focused (which really doesn't bother me since it's still a place for a drink after all!), this place could be a cool place for a chilled out night. Went down on a Thursday evening before dinner elsewhere and were one of only two groups in there. Decent selection of drinks, some toasties available (we didn't try), great music and huge potential but horrendous staff. The tall lady with thick dark hair and fringe didn't acknowledge anyone who came up for a drink other than to role her eyes to another staff member sitting at the end of the bar even when asked how she was... piss poor effort mate. Also the fact that all you can smell as you walk through the front door is cigarettes granted the smoking area surrounds the front door is quite off putting. Won't go back unless they up their game on the service and lose the attitude... major turn off.

I am a massive Seinfeld fan and have been for a while now. I visited this bar with not so high expectations and I'm really glad that I did.
PROS: great vibe, mixed crowd, an abundance of detail has gone into the decor and scattering it with George Constanza and Seinfeld themed memorabilia. With all the little things from the cocktails named "the phone message" and "the summer of George", the many famous George C. Quotes graffitied across the walls, the sketch of George in his Gore-tex coat and the modest American diner style booths and the cluttered and warm atmosphere - I could not keep a smile off my face as it was the combination of all these things that bring back fond memories of one of my all time favorite televisions shows.
CONS: just a couple of minor things; food options are limited here. There's pretzels and a few chocolate bars from the vending machine or select from a range of toasted sandwiches ($5 each) - I went with "the dealership" which was the sweet option and contained snickers, maplebutter and pretzels which was really delicious to be honest.

I will definitely be back to soak up the unique atmosphere. Loved it!

Probably appreciate the references a bit more if you're a Seinfeld fan. Still a good bar probably better for a drink then a full fledged meal. Good time to go now that the hype has died down. Serenity now!

George's Bar....an excellent homage to George Costanza and a place to unwind and enjoy the spirit of Seinfeld. We were there nice and early at 5:59pm right when the doors opened; this was a good move as the place was full within an hour or so. Ample space inside but I recommend coming early.

We had a variety of cocktails and toasties to fill up our bellies; everthing from a Summer of George to a Marisa Tomei (filled with vodka), from an Art Vandelay and the Quitter to the New Yorker (laden with salami)! The conclusion of this great night was long island iced teas with a 'cheers to the Festivus for the rest of us'!

Whoever rated this bar poorly either has no interest in Seinfeld or doesn't appreciate the quirkier things in life (in addition to having a good time?). I am a die-hard fan of Seinfeld and believe the owner of this joint did a credible job of showcasing the emotional flavour of George that is so quirky, so bald and so funny....Highly recommend George's bar for an awesome night out in Melbourne.

Firstly, huge Seinfeld fan, George especially, is very worthy of his own bar.
This however, is just a mediocre bar littered with an avid collector's memorabilia.
Some of it's quite interesting, like the signed script for the pilot and the huge wall painting in the side alley.
There's a range of themed cocktails and toasties, but they're not much of a draw card.
Throughout the ages, bars have come and gone through the social natural selection process and only time will tell how long George's has left.

For a bar supposedly themed to Seinfeld and Georgia Constanza it was actually quite modest! But still I enjoyed the subtle references around the place. Was actually a nice venue, well set out with some cool decor options - loved the use of old church pews for bench seating along one side! $5 toasties were a hit, decent ingredients too which is good to know they don't skimp on quality! Tap list was good, some great local beers from little creatures. $20 jugs which is pretty standard these days and they were super accommodating and friendly to our fairly large group!

George's Bar Fitzroy is a bar inspired by Seinfeld's George Costanza. Why you might ask? Well owners Dave and Tina Barrett really like Seinfeld and had the idea - that's all there is to it. As soon as you walk into George's Bar the Constanza influences are there to see.

Love it. I want to buy this bar and live in it, so I can keep reliving the awesomeness which is George's Bar. Thank you for an amazing night filled with laughter, tasty food, great tunes, and long chats. From the hilariously oversized and beautiful George mural on the outside wall to the great little Seinfeld figurines dotted around inside, George's Bar takes you to another place; Awesomenessvillia. The theme is cool, the surfaces are clean, the atmosphere is chilled, and the bar staff are the most friendly and passionate group of people I've met in a long time. The toasties are delightful (I had 3, and would've had more if my pesky stomach would simply expand), the craft beers are very moderately priced, and the simplicity of the menu is refreshing and clever. The Monday trivia night was fantastically hosted and a genuine laugh for all. The toilets are clean (a rarity in most pubs), and the decor makes you want to just walk around and look at everything while you sip your drink. The people who run this bar are a credit to the industry (the owner, the bar staff and anyone else involved) and my only negative is that there are not more bars like it...everywhere. I travelled 2 hours to get to George's Bar and would've travelled another 6. If you've watched at least one episode of Seinfeld, go to this bar. If you haven't, go to this bar. If you don't even like bars or have had a bad experience at one, go to this bar. I will be back.
Judge Betty Cocker
HIGH COURT OF CONSUMPTION

BETTY COCKER CJ

1. They call this place George's Bar (the 'Seinfeld bar that's not really at all about Seinfeld'), but they put it on Johnson Street, when George Street is just down the road?

2. Toasties took about 30 minutes to be delivered to the courthouse.

3. If the aim of this place is just to be a bar about nothing, offering nothing, with nothing to remember, then that memorandum has been fulfilled. OBJECTION? OVERRULED.

4. This Judge wants to believe that Fitzroy hipsters deserve better than this, but they don't really deserve anything.

ORDERS

5. This place ain't bad really if you're just looking for something to prove to your friends that you like Seinfeld and you get all the references, but other than that there's nothing lasting about it and this Judge says no.

TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT.

CASE CLOSED.

Hmmmm, as a big Seinfeld fan I had high hopes for this place. While the venue is ok and the drinks good, it is hardly a bar dedicated to George Castanza- think three small photo's and a mural outside.
I am still giving a 3 for the rest of it, but feel the venue needs to teper expectations for Seinfeld fans making to trip for George's sake...

It's fine if you just want a fairly standard bar experience but as a George Costanza themed bar it's pretty underwhelming. Just some pictures up on the walls and a Frogger machine in the corner. The vibe is not remotely Seinfeld. I think the concept would work far better as a diner than a bar.

Cool concept - though very much an average bar with a small Contanza influence. It's doesn't feel like, "George's Bar" to me. However, annoyingly they advertise that they don't take bookings - I turned up at 5 minutes after opening time, and every free table (over half the bar) had a reserved sign on it. Poor form.

I'm a big Seinfeld fan, so when I found out about George's Bar, I had to go. We went on Saturday and stood outside with a few others waiting for the doors to open at 6pm. It's not a big space, so within 10 minutes the place was already crowded and the bartenders were busy. For their themed cocktails ($14), some are labor intensive (like the Marisa Tomei) and took longer to make.

The food selection isn't that good (toasties, pretzels, and Twix), but it's a bar first and foremost. The toasties, which are grilled cheese sandwiches, are a good deal for $5. We had the Quitter and the New Yorker, which were on a nice bread that when grilled had a nice crunch, but wasn't hard.

George's bar in Fitzroy has received a huge amount of attention both locally and internationally. So last Wednesday we organised a group of us to see what all the fuss is about. George's is a bar that pays homage to George Costanza, the character out of the very popular TV show Seinfeld. The bar opens at 6pm, and we arrived around 5:55pm and there was already a crowd hovering at the entrance awaiting for the doors to swing open. Once the clock reached 6pm the doors opened and we were greeted warmly by the cool looking bar staff. Upon walking in the venue it had a very distinct New York vibe and style to it. Timber floors with white tiles on the walls. Now, not being a huge Seinfeld fan the theme was a little lost on me, a few George's quote and photos on the wall certainly got the punters camera flashing.
The cocktail menu was limited and design with the Seinfeld theme in mind. From a Bloody George, which was their version of a Bloody Mary, to a Draped in Velvet, which had similarities to a Long Island Ice Tea. The beer list, whilst safe, had a good range of both local and international beers. The food menu was basically toasties and there was a selection of 5 to choose from. I had the New Yorker, which was hot salami, mozzarella cheese and tomato. For $5 it is what is.
The crowd was a good mix of southsiders and locals and I got the feeling they too didn't understand the hype. So takeaway the Seinfeld connection and your left with a pretty cool bar. The service was on point and the staff certainly made sure everyone was having a good time. Time will tell if George's survive the fickle bar scene but I really hope it does. Would I return? Sure would.
