Review China Bar - Fitzroy

M K
Consistent, brilliant, tasty, lovely staff that remember loyal customers. This place is ace… I wish it was in the Western suburbs.. worth the drive though! Did I mention the mad delicious chicken!

Dumpling was quite disappointing, the skin especially was quite soft and wasn’t chewy enough. The fried rice was decent however only had a tiny portion of char Siu relative to the rice.

If i could rate it lower then 1 star I would.!!! My partner and I came to Fitzroy on Labour Day and whilst there were a number of restaurants closed, China Bar was open along with the Mexican and Pizza place across the road. We ordered quickly and sat outside waiting for the entree. After a while we noted that other diners who had ordered well before us, were still waiting for their orders. It appeared that the staff were too busy with online orders and therefore diners had to wait an inordinate amount of time. Eventually, after 30mins, the entree and one of the mains arrived. We continued to wait for the other main and two diners near us had lost patience and were questioning staff. After a further 15 mins my partner enquired as to the whereabouts of the missing 2nd main. The 2nd main finally arrived and it was basically, overcooked BBQ pork, badly cooked rice and bland bok chuy. The 1st main was just noodles, and 3 prawns struggling for relevance. DO NOT BOTHER WITH THIS PLACE as it suffers from: - rude staff - overpiced food not fit for a dodgy food court The 7/11 further up the road would be better value and definitely quicker service.

Great experience, great food, well cooked and prepared. They toned the usually spicy dishes down to be suitable for young children and a woosy grandma like me who cannot handle really spicy food. Excellent staff, will go again I'm sure.

AVOID this place. They run a daily specials menu at a great price, however they make you wait for your meal because you're not paying full price. The place was 1/4 full and the chef did not bother. So I left. Without having my meal. And won't be back ever. Really really poor attitude by the chef/owner. The staff were ok - they were trying to hurry the chef up but obviously he didn't care much for them either. Spend your money elsewhere.

Me and my partner went here for some cheap eats for valentines. We went to the one in the city and loved it. we thought we could trust China Bar for it's good quality at a good price. However, this was not the case with this one! Every dish we ordered was bland as!!!! I hadn't eaten all day and we'd spent a hungover day at the zoo and was looking forward to a treat afterwards. It was SO disappointing, and also it is MORE EXPENSIVE than the city China Bar and the quality is wayyy worse! I will not be going to this one again. Very disappointed.

I arrived here at 10.45pm first I was told that they are closed then another Lady came and she said we close at 11.30pm if you are done by then come in. So we did ordered our food at 11.05pm the guy from the cash register came to my table with the eftpos facility to make a payment while we were eating. We finished our dinner at 11.15pm had so much left over food asked for a container to take the left over food the guy told the waitress 30cents each for a container after spending $194.48 for dinner. My husband told him off. Some of the dishes were good, 2 of our dishes were really bad BBQ Pork $35 was bad and price was charged more that it was on the menu, Lemon Chicken was bad too what lemon that lemon dip was all sugar. We always go to China Bar in CBD and food is always good. I will never go here again got ripped off and cash register person was so rude. Good customer service by the waitress.

Absolutely woeful!!! It is not OK to be rude to customers, prioritise your Uber Eats customers and make your in house diners wait 45 minutes for an overpriced inedible basic tasteless chewy bbq pork and rice. Where is the zero star rating??? First time l’ve been compelled to write a negative review but it is 100% warranted!!! Please review your systems and processes immediately. Arrived hungry. Left hungrier and out of pocket 😞😞😞

People listen to one news story and ruin a good restaurants reputation. This place has fantastic food and quick turn around. Worth every dollar - won’t find many high quality contemporary Chinese food chains such as this. So glad I didn’t listen to the sheep 🐑

Do not visit. Flouted rules re COVID-19 and posed a severe health and safety risk.
DineByNine
I just saw this on the news. Coronavirus comes out of China, we are now in Stage 3 restrictions and these guys DONT follow the rules. Happy that they got a $10K fine!
David Trembath
These greedy irresponsible people broke quarantine to serve people during a pandemic and have been fined accordingly. Boycott them. They should not be in business. Dangerous idiots
Some Bunee Loves Food
Had a take away century egg and shredded chicken congee. It was actually really nice with a lot of chicken and chunky century egg. The congee was nice and hot too. Enjoyed it.

Went here on a Tuesday night and unfortunately, no good 🙅🏻‍♂️.
Came in at about 6pm to an almost-dead restaurant. Ordered 10 x steamed pork dumplings, and 3 x pork, prawn, ginger and chive dumplings.

The prawn dumplings had decent flavours however, the textures were pretty horrendous - over-fried, rock hard dumpling casing, mush/ mystery meat inside, and that horrible, gritty crunch from unremoved prawn spines - see photo below.

The pork dumplings were a large, undrained, undercooked, unpleasant, wet mess.

Would not recommend. Being in Melbourne, with its rich Chinese culture, there’s much better options.
Josh
nothing special about this place, starting for the poor customer service from the lady at the front. The flavours are nothing special either.
Louie
I love that this place is open so late, till 5am.
Friendly service, cozy atmosphere, and food is good.
When youre hungry af, after a night out, this is a great place to go 👍
China Bar is one of my late night go tos when I’ve finished work and am looking for a good, reliable feed. This one in particular is my favourite. The staff are always fantastic, they pretty much know our entire order off by heart and cater to all our dietary requests! I love this place, and I’ll continue to return
Eating Away Melbourne
3.5

Had a quick dinner here and it was alright! Service was actually quite quick and friendly not like other reviews told me. Ordered the wonton noodle soup its perfect for this winter weather. The wonton wasn't the best I had and the bbq pork was a bit flavourless. But hey it fed me and it was a good portion for the price.

Extremely bad service by a old lady at Chinabar Fitzroy. Very rude old lady. Not recommended to others to come here as if there is other choices or restaurant to go. Very bad experience.

Been here with a friend after going out for the night.
Food took FOREVER to get to the table.. like 50 minutes.
Definitely not enough people working there.
We made a complaint with the girl at the cash register and she took off only 5 dollars from the bill.
Never again
Rachel Susan
Whenever I go the food is good. scallop dumplings, prawn dumplings, duck, lemon chicken and plenty more are delicious.
I didn't like this seafood laksa, the chicken laksa is much better.
The servers are friendly, and more than willing to assist. When they get busy they are off their feet.
Definitely worth checking out and eating here.
Mark Gayle
I stop by here quite often as it's at the end of my street. The food is ok - you get what you pay for really. Nothing to rave about but does the job when needed. I've always found the staff to be friendly and helpful.
Grant Baker
Sometimes gets a bad wrap, but its so cheap and delicious for a late night bite or early week indulgence. All the westernised Chinese classics done very well with a few authentic dishes that are certainly passable. Staff can be a little swift, but they're generally very friendly - I wouldn't want to work the hours they do on a busy drunken strip like brunswick! Don't expect substitutions or alterations to the menu though, its what you see is what you get!
Tender Beat
Rude and disgusting customer service. Fast food but poor quality and poor service. Will not come back ever again. I was joining up with my partner who had ordered and was patiently waiting for his food on a quiet sunday.

I came in with an unopened unmarked small food box to keep him company as he waited and before I had even entered the venue the waitress was yelling at me about bringing in food onto the premises (Unopened and she didn't even know what was in it. A small biscuit was all it was for later.) and when I respectfully explained I was just waiting with my partner she continued to yell and pace past myself as I was sitting. She continued glaring at me and yelling from the other side of the room at me as I waited (With the box still unopened)

I appreciate you have a business to run and you don't want to lose seats to people not eating your food but we have been loyal customers of this chain up until now. You don't lose customers by politely explaining your policies. And it would not have hurt you as it was practically empty on a Sunday.

Awful, I'm not someone who yells back at people but you made me do so through your continued abuse. Myself, friends, family will never return again. You almost ruined a perfectly good Sunday.

China bar does a great chicken curry laksa. I rarely find a curry laksa as nice as the one made at china bar. Their pan fired shanghai dumplings are also amazing!
Insta: HungerPangs7
Well the food wasnt great. The rice was undercooked and the gravy was just about okay.
The food arrives quickly once ordered. Quantity was good enough for one person. Sadly cant say the same for the quality.
Jessie Balletta
Terrible service.
Manager would not let my partner and I eat our food in the restaurant after having to wait over 25 minutes for our takeaway order. We decided we may as well eat there and she insisted we weren't allowed to eat the food there. About 2 hours later I felt really sick and actually had a mild case of food poisoning after eating the vegetable noodle soup and dumplings. Will never ever go there again.
Sweet Chilli
Well what do you expect... it wasn't good but sadly i ate it i was starving! I had hainese chicken with the usual sides. Chicken rice, soup and chilli sauce. I'm not sure what part of the chicken i was served but it was slimand grim looking!

China Bar Fitzroy is much like China Bar CBD and the other China Bar CBD store. It’s all the same really, though I do like the Fitzroy fit out a little more. Food is cheap, comes out quick and there’s plenty of options to go for. This store has more traditional hours but otherwise menu and service are same as the others, which is about above average.
Peter Evans
The quality here is good and it's consistent all the time. Like the win ton noodle soup for around $11.
When it's late on Brunswick street and your stomach turns at the thought of a greasy souvlaki this is your saviour.
Teagan Fraser
I come here often and always order the same thing (wonton noodle soup) and it always comes out super quickly and exactly the same which is what you want in a place like this. Nothing special but still good enough to keep going back
Thefoodfather
Just had lunch here. For Asian food it was so bland! A wasted cheat meal. My laksa had no spice although it was massive. Its probably good for late night drunk hoardes of men but not for lovers of chinese food. I am a lover of actual chinise food with chilli oil and soy but not this. Go to more authentic chinese hardcore eateries in the city or surrounds.
Nina
The food was passable but my guts have been crook for two days now.. Ordered pork spare ribs in black bean, bean curd skin wrapped prawns, beef roti chanai and beef brisket on rice. The best was probably the roti chanai but in saying that - the roti was not house made and the curry was far too salty which is a recurring theme with all dishes actually.
Jessica
Service is quick, open 24/7, food came out within 10 minutes. Most of the food were defrosted unfortunately but it's expected. I requested for the vegetarian dumplings to be pan fried, they were nice to eat. The vegetarian spring rolls and stir fry noodles were plain. Overall it's a decent place to go for late night feed to satisfy cravings for Chinese
Bronimal
Look, let's be honest; it's nothing outstanding but a place that serves vegan dumplings and cheap beer at 2am can't be all bad. I know this isn't south east Asia with its 24/7 premium fast food but it's a reasonable compromise. More vegan options would be appreciated.
Emii KS
When your not sure of what you feel like eating here is the place to go. fast and friendly service! Always fresh. The Custard bun is the best I've ever had at this joint. And the Ramen soups? OMG :D
Beccy's Adventures
Heard good things about China Bar so decided to stop by for some lunch. Pictured is the wonton noodle soup. The wontons (chicken) themselves were absolutely faultless. The components in the soup around it added to the appeal of the dish. All ingredients were so fresh. I love a hearty Asian soup that keeps me full for hours on hours, and this did exactly that. Nice spot along Brunswick St.

We have been here many times before our recent visit and the food has always been up to scratch despite there somewhat annoying service, however our recent visit was a disappointment.

We ordered our standard dishes of Grilled Salmon on Rice with Teriyaki sauce, Lemon Chicken with Fried Rice and Roti with Satay Sauce as a side. We also decided to order the pan fried dumplings (Pork, we think?)

In recent times, the salmon dish would come with a decent size piece of salmon and a couple of different variety of vegetables however this time it came with the smaller piece of salmon that was very over cooked and the majority of it was skin and about 3 pieces of broccoli.
The lemon chicken didn't even taste like chicken and the pan fried dumplings were in no way imageable 'pan fried' and the inside, which we think was pork, wasn't even cooked and tasted beyond disgusting.

One would ask why we didn't complain? We felt we couldn't because they wouldn't understand and we don't believe they would've done anything about it. Not to mention that they come and refill your drink every time you take a sip and you can have but feel like they are always watching you.

Having come here many times and leaving satisfied, I was very disappointed. It safe to say they have lost our business. Maybe we'll try the one in the city.
Richard Woods
Good place for late night Asian food.
Disappointing they don't have duck though.
Food is cheap and good for anyone that's ran out of options.
Aaassshhhddd
I was very sick after i had meal here. I ordered bbq pork rice dishes. I felt that pork is sour and not fresh. This is bsolutely disgusting. And the service is terrible. Dont know why the shop is always busy.
Pooja Hoderkar
This place is quite hum ho...

Pros- Very cheap, open until 3 am, average tasting Asian food

Cons - Decor (I don't mind simple decor, but torn seats are a dismay), Service (my vegetarian dumplings took ages to arrive and were extremely sticky, they served the roti and after we were one fourth way through they tell us satay sauce isn't available strange way to serve a dish)
Luke And Hannah
Great food, fast service and opens until 3 in the morning, what more could you ask for? We tried the tomyum noodle (which Hannah claimed to be the best she has eaten) and combination fried noodle (which tastes great as well). The place however doesn't serve roast duck/pork like the one in Glen Waverley.

CASH ONLY, CASH ONLY, No eftpos, machine is broken, what liar's, every time that I have been to the Fitzroy China Bar I am always given that excuse,
Well no more, I am personally pursuing that the ATO get involved and bring these Tax cheats to justice. (by the way, the food isn't that good either )
It makes me wild that after paying my Taxes for over 40 years which enable me to get treatment in hospitals, roads to drive on, pension should one be required, that this business thinks it can rape our system for his own greed.
WE need to stop paying "cash only business's" otherwise we will be paying more because they haven't paid any.
Chris Wortley
Poor ingredients-sloppy service
Fatty chicken and when we complained they didn't speak English so let's see if they don't understand I'm not paying
Just for tourists -No Fitzroyalty eating here
Pixieroberts2011
Nice food and friendly staff. Have eaten there several times and the food has always been nice, fresh and tasty. The staff are very friendly too.
Dicksontoast
My worst meal of 2014. Truly terrible food. Reheated frozen dumplings and flavourless uncooked noodles. They know how bad the food is, which is why they make you pay first. China as a country should feel embarrassed to share its name with this crappy restaurant. I would only recommend this restaurant to sadists
Annette Evans
The menu at China Bar is broad Asian, without specialising in any one cuisine, the prices are super cheap and they serve a good collection of wine. Well really, as long as the food’s ok, what else matters? At the time none of us checked our faithful Urbanspoon online bible or we might have been dissuaded by the low score of this place, but in the end our dining experience was a positive one anyway.

I am a sucker for crispy skin chicken dishes, and this Hainanese one at $12.90 came with a bowl of broth, a huge bowl of rice, chilli sauce and friend spring onions with ginger and garlic. I added flavour to the rice by pouring in some of my broth a little at a time, and voila! The chicken really was crispy and delicious and the accompaniments we

Consistently good, quick and reasonably priced meals. Can't fault the service - so attentive and helpful. Late night opening always means we have a guaranteed good after-midnight meal.

Great dumplings!. I don't understand what all the bad reviews are about! had some great food here!
Wombat
Best way to end a night out!. Pretty much a weekly visit to this place as we stumble home from a night out, its fast, open til all hours, & the food is delish! Recommend the Singapore noodles, char kway teow & dumplings!
Facebook User
Terrible. I had ordered some rice and prawns from China Bar two Saturdays ago, on previous occasions it was acceptable. Although never have I felt so sick after ordering my food. The service is terrible and need classes how to approach or speak to customers as they are very rude. Also forcing you to pay for your meal before you even begin eating and tell you sorry 'its policy'. Will not return
Ghengis
I can't understand the bad reviews. We had four delicious entrées and a main which was tasty, full of fresh ingredients and sizzling hot from the wok. The first serve of entrées were yummy steamed prawn dim sum followed by steamed prawn and ginger dumpling which was perfectly rolled and smothered in a silky ginger sauce. Heavenly! The bean curd roll deserves special mention for the chef's skills at preserving a soft meaty interior whilst maintaining a crispsy textured beancurd skin. Perfecto!

Have not been to a better China bar. Boycott Boxhill and glen for their poor service and bad food... But this at fitroy... Bring hope to China bar again.
Chase Harris
Don't know what everyone else is about, It's very quick, tasty food.
Nature_girl
I don't know why this place continues to get a bad wrap. It's cheap Asian cuisine! Always fresh and tasty. Yes, some dishes are better than others. Recommend their fried dumplings and beef sizzling plates and dim sum. Definitely not the 50% rating it has! It is great!
Ednama
Just a fast food really. It's ok food for when you're starving after a few drinks. Friendly staff.
Chipa
Dope. Great food reasonably priced open for food and drinks till the early hours.
Mary83
Disappointing. The chicken in the dish I ordered looked and tasted uncooked and same goes for the dumplings which were slimy inside. Not an enjoyable meal. The staff were very nice though!
Tess Bergin
Surprisingly Fantastic Dinner. Settled here one busy Friday night with a girlfriend when Naked for Satan/Kodiak Club were full up. We ordered between us the steamed prawn dumplings which were the best either of us had had in a long time, and the beef brisket & wonton soup with greens & noodles and were especially blown away by the flavour of the stock. My only gripe would be the amount of fat on the beef, although I always kind of expect this when eating Chinese and it was easily picked out. Also the service was a little slow/inattentive and we did observe the waiters sitting and chatting at a nearby table instead of serving.
Overall the food was great but reading others' reviews I'd be a little skeptical about going back as it looks pretty hit & miss
Jo
Ordered takeaway tonight and it was bordering on indelible. Mongolian beef had some creamy capsicum sauce that more closely resembled ranch dressing and the sauce in the chicken rice was more oil than sauce. The salted fish in the fried rice was in hard cubes and an assault on the senses. We won't be back if we can find any other option.
Helsey
Takeaway tonight, careless cooking, virtually inedible. Never again.
Foodlover
My laksa was thick like coconut cream mud. Tasty but it was full of noodles with NO green veg, just a bit of fake seafood and soggy tofu. Wouldn't order again.
Food Is My Life
Shame!. I consider myself one of their regular Takeaway customer not because their food is good but because there aren't many choices of Asian cafe/restaurant nearby. What triggers me to write this review (after all the takeaways I had) is the Sweet & Sour Pork with Fried Rice! It's beyond what it should be given to the customer! I can understand that sometime you get food that is average, not great but this is way too far to be classified as food for human! The rest of their food that I had before was only average margin. The sweet & sour pork that I had, is lumpy & soggy! You get a tiny bit of meat (about the cube size of 1.5cm to 2cm) but the whole lots are just the flour! Yes, sweet & sour pork should have flour coated but this is not coated! This is like eating a FLOUR BALLS! if you do the math of the cube size of meat covered with a 4cm diameter size of flour, you will be able to work out how much flour is there. That's a whole lot of SOGGY FLOUR! And you only get 8pcs of sweet & sour pork and a fried rice for the price of $12.80! I don't mind to pay for that price if the sweet & sour pork is good but this is beyond acceptable! I am not a great cook myself but I cooked sweet & sour pork before and it's crispy and you don't get the taste of flour since it's only lightly coated.

I would love to attach a picture of the Sweet & Sour Pork (to proof that I wasn't lying) but I am currently at work (having my lunch break) and I do not have my iPhone cable with me.

To China Bar big boss: you might want to consider change the chef if you want your business to go further or remove Sweet & Sour Pork from your menu.
Tim 'the Critic'
I wish I had looked at the reviews posted on this site prior to ordering.

Entering the restaurant I was asked by a waiter if I was eating in. I responded that I would be taking away and that I wanted a combination noodle meal. For some unknown reason this waiter assumed that I would like a combination soup meal. I am all for a caring waiter who assumes themselves in a role as a guide to the patrons through an adventurous asian menu.
However, when I received a soup dish which looked like rubbish I informed the waiter that a mistake had been made.
His response was 'its your fault'. Even after repeated attempts to plead the in accuracy of my order he continued to aggressively blame me for the outcome.
Personally, I think the bleach permeated into this ugly mans scalp and irritated any thought process. Maybe it had to do with his inability to attract a soulmate or perhaps his husband stole his handbag.
All in all, the service was horrendous. The first was disgusting. Stay clear people, the ugly waiter's bleached hair approach is not something you want to endure.
Mariia
The food was decent i guess, beter in the area though. There is one waitress who is very pushy, making it very offputting. The only decent thing is its open late, otherwise give it a miss
Andrew I Love Food But It Makes Me Fat
Appalling service. I can't comment on the food as others have done here as we walked out before ordering. It's really sad when a good Malaysian cafe like China Bar franchises and other outlets are as poorly run as this one. We walked past a staff member smoking away in a sort of semi enclosed section where food was clearly still served masquerading as an outside section. We seated ourselves and were completely ignored until I wondered up and down to the take away area and eventually asked if they had table service. The guy said "yes" if we liked (like it was an unusual request) and how many were in our party. He asked this as he looked directly at us as if the mathematics of adding up to five was too much for him and when I said "five" he gave us four menus. After another really long wait as we discussed what to order and had no offers of drinks or anything else we decided to leave. Smoko guy seemed to finally be on his way to serve us but I told him not to bother.

Frozen dumplings. One of the worst experiences ever. Gag.
Melbourne Foodie
Dumplings are good. Great for a quick yum Cha type fix, plenty of dumplings etc - fast, fresh and yummy!
Christopher Alex Pavlidis Garkinis
Was ok overall. My curry had all the right Malaysian flavours and textures and with pickes on the side. The Dumplings, however, were revolting. Overall I would say not bad because of the massive difference in Presentation & flavour of dishes.
Joe Chan
Disappointing. I've been a China Bar regular since 1994. Have been to the Fitzroy restuarnt twice now as it is close to my house. Both times have been hugely disappointing and I think this place is really bad for th China Bar brand name.

On my last visit, I had a tomato seafood noodle dish (number 35) which was disgusting. The prawns were clearly off and the flavor of the soup was overpowering - nothing like that from other China Bar outlets. after tasting the prawns, I did not finish the meal as it would certainly have made me I'll.

The staff were boisterous, unprofessional, and behaved like school kids in the schoolyard. The waiters and waitresses continually played with the music system - including turning the volume up for extended periods to the point that it was painful. They also shouted at each other from across the (empty) restaurant and 'chased' each other.
Chris
Very bad quality food. Dumplings were horrible- there's much better around. Other dishes average at best. Banana smoothie contains no real banana. Steer clear of this place at all costs.
Mitch Cameron
Had an over bearing waitress. we were seated, given menus and asked what we wanted all in one swift movement. the scezhuan noodles were second rate and its hard to eat pork buns anywhere but nam loong. never again.
Blondie German
Absolutely disgusting. We ordered pan fried dumplings which were deep fried! The steamed dumplings were also horrid. They had no structure and it was if the insides weren't cooked. Terrible service and far too expensive for the crap they serve up.
Phillip
Really good. I used to be hooked on china bar. i'd crave it and end up at this china bar almost every week. ive only had the noodle stir frys, dumplings and shakes. all are delicious and cooked/taste the same every time i go. service is good, serving sizes usually pretty generous. the dumplings never fail to disappoint either. if you dont take it too seriously and consider china bar to be like a 'fast-food' dining experience, you'll have a good time. excellent opening hours on the weekend (until 5am!) make for a perfect late night meal after drinks in the area. beware of bloated MSG hangover!
Carolina Ambra Aurora Achatheus
Disgusting. Ordered sea food fried noodles - absolutely uneatable! Slimy noodles, worst shrimps I've ever hade. Also, there was a misplaced piece of beef/pork in this meal, and I'm a pescetarian - totally unacceptable. Overpriced too, that meal wasn't even worth a dollar. Oh, one more thing, it looked nothing like the picture. Never eating there again in my life.
Floberghasted
Last Resort. We only come here when we're really desperate for hot food that isn't kebab or pizza on Brunswick St at 3am.
Cochin
Meh. Ok food, but it's a franchise without anything particularly good.
H & V
Nasi Lemak - Heavenly!. I am a big fan of the China Bar franchise, and am obsessed with their hainanese chicken rice (be sure to clarify with the waitstaff or you might end up with honey chicken rice!) and nasi lemak.
The servings are more generous on brunswick street. If you really love the flavour of their curry, i recommend china bar signature on exhibition street or at burwood - it's a buffet where you can spoon as much curry as you like onto your plate! yummmmm!!!!
I'm so glad this new store is just down the road from my pad in Fitzroy :)
Kitty O'Neill
Avoid. Had an absolutely horrible experience on brunswick st, chicken tasted like rubber, over priced and uneatable.
Kokolossal
It was just ok. Went in there for a late-ish lunch (2pm) and received my entre and main at the same time. Then one of the staff (guessing the owner as she was in casual clothing) sat out side with me and smoked a cigarette! Ok it is a smoking area but I was the only diner there and she wasn't a customer. The main was gluggy as by the time I ate it it had already been sitting there for 10 minutes. I'll give it another go because the menu is huge and I love Asian cuisine.
Luke Young
I really like it. The food is consistently nice and the staff are pleasant and efficient. Great for a meal during a work lunch break! A little bit pricey though
Napier
Very Happy!. I'm surprised at the majority of the reviews for this place. I suppose it boils down to your expectations. I wasn't expecting a three hat dining experience and i left very content and happy. We ordered the pork noodle hot pot with black bean sauce and the chicken curry with roti. I thought they were both delicious. The pork in the noodle dish was excellent and the flavour of the chicken curry was outstanding.

Didn't try the dumplings as they didn't seem like great value. The staff were fine.

I will definitely be investing further eating time at China Bar.
Phinko
Love China bar. FOOD Nice
STAFF & Chef Friendly
LOcation GOOD
:) Love it
JD
For a late night feed only. I kinda hate China Bar. I'll admit I'm prejudiced against chain restaurants, but I find the place soulless, the staff, while friendly and efficient, look tired, stressed and underpaid. I would never eat there in the CBD as it's too easy to find better quality versions of the same dishes and for a few dollars less.

However, as somebody who is often working or otherwise engaged in the evenings, I often find myself looking for food after 11pm, which usually means a choice of kebab or pizza. So I was stoked to discover that China Bar is open till 3am most nights and 6am Friday/Saturday. The food is decent, if unexceptional, but it IS possible to find something on the menu that is healthier than a kebab, and that's enough reason for me to come back here.
Fitzy
Please don't trade so late if you are not going to maintain the quality! Good during the day- hit and miss after 11pm

-----21 Sep, 2011-----

The vegetarian who reviewed ... Get a grip.. Restaurants that have huge menus do not need to change according to your stupid requests... Order a vego dish.. These guys are busy and have options for you.. You would not go to target or kmart and ask for custom design so stop complaining about cheap and easy venues you stupid twit! They serve what they offer- more no less!
Jeremy K
Don't get the negative reviews of this place. Really good no-nonsense mainstream Chinese food and open REALLY late (I think 6am on weekends)! The best BBQ pork buns I've had in Melbourne. I've had about 8 different dishes here and liked them all, especially at the price. Highly recommended.
Catherine
Yummy honey chicken (only breast meat). Fried rice is poor, only contained egg and nothing else.
Just Another
Awesome food! Warm and inviting will defintely be back!!!
Annagirl
Keep Going. Very disappointing. The menu is vast which should have been a giveaway.
I ordered the shanghai dumplings, siu mai and prawn rice noodle roll (cheung fun). The dumplings were pasty, the siu mai tough and the cheung fun was ok, but the prawns were as tough as an old boot. I ordered what I thought would be a safe dish, hokkien noodles with vegetables only to find it was gluggy and salty.
Service seemed fine, but $5 for 3 dumplings, I think you could get better value elsewhere.
