Review Gami Chicken And Beer - Fitzroy

Matt
The Highpoint store is better but you'll still get great Gami chicken here. Love their spicy flavour and the garlic soy one.
Eddy Brown
Really enjoyed the chicken here and have been back for more. Recommend going to the restaurant rather than using a delivery service as it's much better fresh. Also highly recommend getting the barrel of beer and the cheese corn kernels.
Kadin Priest
Really good honey soy chicken and the fries are incredible, a bit on the pricey side however
Esrael
Good old fried chicken, nothing fancy, you have to get your hands dirty and enjoy the taste.
Atlana Yoon Jiwon
I prefer this place than Nene chicken. We got half spicy half original and it was perfect. The sauce was abit sweet for us

Super disappointing experience - made a booking on 6 July for 10 July (today), arrived to be turned away and they had no record of the booking being made a WHOLE FOUR DAYS AGO. City stores (and stores in the 'burbs) are waaaaaay better, dont even bother wasting your time. This isn't the first not so great experience I've had at this store either but I hate to be that person writing a negative review but this tipped it over the edge. Take your cash elsewhere.
Hyomin Park
City stores are better. This place is so stingy with raddish, fried chicken tastes best with raddish and usually free to refill but this place would always say they ran out of it but will give you more if you offer to pay. Not run by Korean

So I'm gonna change my review. Maybe I didn't know how to handle the uber eats. I asked a lot of solutions and it was not the fault of the person who answered me but she tried to handle in the best way. But Im gonna blame the management. Your procedures are doubtfull especially for the person in charge of the phone. Big highlights to Trimh, she can do better but I appreciate her patience and the way she tried to handle everything. She was able to talk to me in a proper way. Amazing person, she never lost it. Give this girl a raise if she has to handle people like me every day.

Chicken, so much chicken. Huge amounts of chicken. And all of it is fried!
The chicken could be a bit less fatty, but hey, if you go to a fried chicken place and complain about fatty food you're probably beyond help...
Volcano sauce is definitely great and you'll experience the heat for at least two days. šŸŒ‹ šŸ”

Not too impressed. The sauces were pretty standard, and the chicken wasn't as juicy or as crispy as I wanted or I've had at other Korean fried chicken places. I don't think this is worth the price.

Lacking in flavour. No tap beer. No choice of any beers other than overpriced can of furphy. Chicken not cooked as well as at other gami restaurants - got the impression that staff REALLY didnā€™t want us here

I'm a regular at their Lonsdale outlet but this is my first time here. As expected from Gami, their flavours are amazing - potato haven is a MUST, no matter how full I think I am, I always order it because it is simply a work of art. Soy Garlic boneless was beautifully seasoned. The beef and rice combo was surprisingly good! The only reason why this is not a 5 star review is the wait. We were there right at opening hour (around 5pm, I believe) and it was still empty, though I could see food delivery orders were pouring in. However, despite the place being nearly empty, it took longer for our eat-in food to be served than the food deliveries. I may have came on a particularly slow day or something though, I don't hold it against them. The food is still delicious and I would go back any day

edit: I would also add that if you like chicken that is more tender, get the wings/ bone chicken. if you like them with a bit of texture and less tender, get the boneless chicken.
Amit Jena
We had boneless chicken with soya garlic sauce and also with sweet chilli and exclusive gami beer. The chicken was tender, full of flavours and the sauces brought out the best in the chicken. The ambience and staff are worth a praise too. One can go for trying out Korean food.
Savvy And Lifestyle
Came here for lunch and decided to grab the half boneless chicken special. I also opted for honey mustard on the side. I love all the gamiā€™s Iā€™ve found itā€™s very consistent. The chicken was very succulent and very crispy. The honey mustard always goes quite well on the side.

Everything food is terrible ,that chicken is not fresh and over cook .All of the fried dishes are as hard as stone,
Hooooooooooooorible"!!!!
Hungry For Chips
KFC doesnā€™t get any better than Gami. And of course you should wash it all down with šŸŗ. I donā€™t know when they updated the menu but itā€™s all still finger lickenā€™ good. Fitzroy is one of the more spacious venues and doesnā€™t seem to be overcrowded. And I donā€™t know what they do to the sweet chilli šŸŒ¶ sauce but I could drink this stuff. Highlights: sweet chilli chicken! Potato heaven! And the mandu was pretty good. Lowlights: Gami doesnā€™t provide a hand washing facility like many others or a miniature bucket for the bones. But I guess you just got to either brush up on the šŸ„¢ skills and go for the boneless options.
Tasting Notes Melbourne
Gami is a very popular franchise these days and I can see why. It has great flavoured chicken and is a great initial introduction to some of the westernised Korean food that most people from all backgrounds will enjoy. I will never understand corn covered with cheese but will eat it nonetheless.

There are many Gami franchises in Melbourne. It turns out they're not all the same!

I ordered a whole boneless chicken from this Fitzroy store (half spicy, half soy garlic), which arrived in a single box with a divider in the middle. All good! The chicken was okay, and kimchi pancake wasn't bad.
Nothing out of the ordinary (so I thought).

Shortly after, my house mate ordered Gami again (yes, twice in the same night).
This time, she ordered from the Gami King St store. Same order: a whole boneless chicken with a kimchi pancake.

This time, the whole boneless chicken came in 2 seperate boxes. One box of spicy, one box of soy garlic. This was a significantly larger portion than the Fitzroy store, we estimate about 1.5x more chicken.

The prices are identical at both Gami stores, but this store provides slightly smaller portions of whole chicken pieces.

I'd upload photos but no one wants to see empty chicken boxes.

I know Korean fried chicken to be nice and crispy. I ordered half original/half soy garlic through Deliveroo.

Excited when it arrived, I opened the box to find only soy chicken. I looked at the receipt stapled to the bag, and lo and behold: no mention of half/half. The Deliveroo order and online receipt very clearly state half/half. On top of that the chicken was soggy and fatty. Zero crisp on any of it.

Some may like soggy and fatty, but it's not for me. I avoid KFC for that exact reason, but in hindsight I think it would've been a better option.

I've eaten with Gami twice now, once in the CBD and now in Fitzroy. Sorry, but I won't be doing it again.
Affogato Addiction
When your main focus is on the chicken, you are expected to deliver - I was pleased with the juiciness, tenderness and flavour of their chicken.

Mushroom and tofu was a good side dish. Would skip the kimchi pancake, it was substandard.

Happy to order delivery again.

Been here few time but tonight have a very unpleasant service . We come as a family with 2 kids. Firstly they give us a table next to the door where it a bit cold for kids. They have few table inside and mention been reserved. After place order, they ask us to finish by 8.30pm. Now is 7.40pm. We respond, we try our best but also need your meal to be quick too. She say it 10-15 min for the meal to serve. So if my calculation is correct, we have about 30-35min to finish the meal. Last but not least, they ask me to look after my kids when they just play on the table!!! Promise not coming back with such rude service. Please donā€™t be racist with your kids.

After all the hype, we were expecting yummier fried chicken- would only recommend the spicy option. Others can be on the sweet side ...However, the sides are good especially the kimchi pancake

This place is always so quiet.
Service was average, food was okay. Not sure what else to add to this review. However I would like to say this gami is wayyy better than the gami in Doncaster.
Selly Nurmala
The soy garlic sauce is so delicious I can't get enough of it. It's sweet and umami at the same time. The chicken meat was so tender and crispy at the same time. But the spicy chicken is just spicy lol. Next time I would just order the soy garlic one, a whole chicken. Haven't had a chance to taste other menu but I will surely coming back!

Ordered this to show my family its so delicious after trying out the Healeys Place Gami Chicken.
Boy was it disappointing, chicken pieces were tiny and one that was as big as my thumb was considered 1 piece.
The chicken was so dry and flavourless.
The Potatoe Heaven had 1 blob of sour cream when Healeys Place gave us 3 blobs
Overall the girls were friendly when i came to pick up my order.
The Frugal Cats
We went to Gami on a Saturday for a late night feed. Service was no fuss and the food came out relatively quickly. The place was pretty packed despite how late it was.

We did what we always do and overordered. The spicy wings were actually really hot. The Soy Garlic chicken wings weren't very impressive unfortunately. The original fried chicken, even though a bit bland and got a bit sickening after a while, was our favourite.

While this was a decent late night feed, it's definitely not the best fried chicken in town. We will definitely be back to try the other non fried chicken items (that seemed quite delicious in fact) on the menu šŸ˜ŗ

Ordered:Ā
Potato Haven (v): 3 different layers of a signature potato, mash creamy potato, cheese and wedges are layered from the bottom ($14)

Review:Ā
The food was quite heavy - but what else would you expect when the food consists of a substantial amount of potato, the strong earthy sweet smell of cheese and MORE potato?!Ā
After seeing the hype over Snapchat and Instagram, I can see the hype. It's very much along the same food group as HSP. It's dirty solid hearty food and you know that it's bad for you.Ā
Unfortunately though, it's not for me.Ā

I wouldn't recommend going in with the heat wave going on.Ā
When me and my mates came in, it seemed as though the aircon was broken or, heaven forbid, they don't have an aircon. The shop wasn't sweet smelling but rather, the opposite, and felt quite enclosed and humid. Until they opened the door and left it open! Yay.Ā
Otherwise, there's a more well lit store in the CBD (Little Londsdale or King St locations).

Had the boneless chicken with the soy garlic and spicy flavor. Soy garlic was amazing. The place is fairly expensive in my opinion being at $34 for the boneless chicken.

Awful remixed pop music was way too loud and all of the staff looked as if they were in a foul mood. Wouldnā€™t call Gami Fitzroy Korean food, would call it Korean influenced food. Ketchup on a side salad is the farthest from Korean you can get. Would say By Korea is a much better bet if you want good Korean chicken. Not to mention, not one of the staff members is Korean, and not having a Korean chef in a Korean restaurant kind of guarantees un-authentic Korean food.
Melissarigos
This is my go-to place for a good meal and drinks. The chicken is always spot on (crispy as hell!) and the chips are pretty bang on. A must is the plum wine!
Mazaya Pramudita
My Gami experience was just like what people have been raving on. The garlic soy fried chicken was a real treat and the cheese mushroom sides was phenomenal. Definitely will come back here if I got back to Melbourne!

What a thoroughly unpleasant experience having lunch here today. Our usual Gami (Little Lonsdale near to the Laksa Bar) is closed on Sunday and our children really wanted Gami today; it being the last day of the school holidays we obliged. I'm pleased to say that we're a happy, friendly and polite family so when we all said hello to the waitress to be completely ignored is not good. I was quite prepared to walk out at that point but the children wanted to stay. Anyway, the food was ok (although our usual dishes didn't come with their usual side salads) but each dish was brought out with a frown. A serious attitude problem that ruined our family Sunday lunch. I won't ever come her again. The other 1/2 star was for the other (shorter of the two waitresses) that was really friendly and cheerful, more in keeping with the reason we enjoy the Gami in the CBD.
I would highly recommend you avoid this place.
Nadia Putri
Very good food. But apparently their service was the worst in Melbourne!! They only have one waiter and their service took so much time. So annoying some more!
George David Michaelides
Some tasty chicken to be had here !! This is what I imagined hot star to be like, great for catch ups with the lads over some beer, favourites here are the hot boneless

This is my third visit to Gami's in Fitzroy I decided to record my experience in a review. I ordered wings (12 pieces) with sweet chilli and garlic and soy and a jug of house beer (lager). The place is clean and well presented and the staff are friendly. The service was good and the food came out in good time. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and rate this as my favorite place in Brunswick St. So far with each visit the food has been fantastic and the beer is good. I have usually ordered a boneless half chicken. Today I went for wings. In future visits I would like to try other menu items. I recommend this place.

I guess I'll put a review. Don't mind me, just stat padding my Zomato numbers.

Anyway, it's Gami. Their fried chicken = good, their sides = good. Their open during late hours, which is nice. Consistent service overall. Between Belle's, Mr. Scruffs, and Gami, these are where you can get your fried chicken fix in the area.
Got_2_lunch
Very crusty and saucy fried chicken. Totally delicious! Came with a big group of friends for a birthday and got to sample all of the sauces! Sweet chili was a little too toffee-like but all others were amazing. Also shared some of the outrageous potato side which just brought everything over the top. Absolute guilt meal.
Only complaint was that inside the small and busy venue it was sooo hot. To the point that I could only enjoy a few pieces of hot crispy chicken before needing to step outside for some air.
Will be back for a quieter mid-week meal so I can really enjoy it ;)
Foodbaby
Came her for dinner and they made both our meals knowing they had no rice left. Made us wait 10 mins for fresh rice to finish cooking but brang our food out anyway so basically we waited for rice and our food went all cold. They ended up coming out rice a day old rice and charged us for one day old rice that wasn't fresh anyway but still served to us and made us eat a cold dinner. Then they went stingy on the spicy sauce with our half boneless fried chicken, was barely enough to cover 1/3 of the fried chicken. Worse Gami in Melbourne never again!
Alex
So far this is the worst, most disappointing Gami I ever visited.
I have always called for take away order. They gave the wrong order, which I didn't know until i get home. then I had to come back to swap. And i dont even live close! Also the ridiculous rule not accepting card payment for less than $15, even i was willing to pay the surcharge. Oh and the sweet chilli chicken has too little sauce, far less amount of sauce than other gami. Staff are unfriendly over the phone, i that time i had to repeat my phone number 5 times!!! 5 freaking times!!!
When i came back to swap they offer me to keep the wrong one they gave before, I said no to them but they still put that damn box in my bag. No thanks, I take what i order , i dont want to throw rubbish for you for that wrong item.
I will never go back to gami Fitzroy again.
Melbourneats
Love their honey soy chicken chicken here.
They have some dishes that are very similar to KBBQ but they don't really sell KBBQ, I reckon they should if they're gonna sell some korean dishes.
However, they're mainly there for their fried chicken.
Spicy is definitely spicy so stick to honey soy if you're like me.
What grinds my gears the most when I comes to finger lickin food is that Gami does not provide you a bowl to give your sticky fingers a clean, that would be helpful.
Staff are attentive however the staff needs to realize that they aren't from their previous Vietnamese restaurant store. A greeting and smile would be welcoming.
The chicken however is defintely better than Nene chicken.
Take your lover or friends who love chicken for a catch up.

Came here Friday night for a post-bar meal.
Quality was on point as expected of the Gami franchise, was not disappointed
Service was good, hubby's first time eating korean fried chicken, will be back for sure

Fried chicken dreams come true at Gami. Itā€™s why thereā€™s ten stores all over Melbourne now. Of those Iā€™ve only hit two, and I enjoyed the experience at the Fitzroy branch the most.Ā Friendly service,Ā a more relaxed ambience and of course, endearing and heart-inducing fried chicken. Itā€™s my favourite chicken in town in fact. Although itā€™s become a bit of a cliche, Gami always delivers in terms of unabashedly fried crunchiness, juicy meats and a good time.
Luke And Hannah
Tasty chicken, generous side dishes in the city suburb. We tried almost every Gami branches by now (except Boxhill) and you definitely can taste the differences in each branch. Fitzroy is one of their newest establishments and has been able to maintain what they're famous for: tasty, moist, and crunchy chicken. The taste in the place is more balanced than the one one in Hawthorn and definitely on par with the originals in the CBD. The corn cheese was delicious as well, we highly recommend this place.

They promote themselves as a chicken place. They also have a range of non-chicken dishes. The food we ordered happened to not contain chicken. The server snapped 'so you're not getting any chicken'?There was nothing welcoming about the service, and I got the impression they were interested in only one thing which was our money.

My partner got the spicy seafood soup which was pretty lacklustre. It was padded out with heaps of thickly cut onion. I had the seafood pancake which was actually ok.

Overall we both agreed worst Korean place we've visited.

Came here with my sexy boyfriend cause he was craving fried chicken. Being a vegetarian I really wasn't looking forward to it. But I'm happily surprised about all the vegetarian options such as the dumplings and vege pancake. The vegetarian chicken was a definite winner and I'd be happy to say I'd come back here just for that. My bf loved his fried chicken with the soy garlic sauce and commented it was one of the best chicken he has had.

i think Gami is fitzroy has slightly different menu than in city - but mostly same. I know it sounded quite cheap to comment on the same brand since last week i just went to one in the CBD.Ā

But the chicken here is a lot juicier, cook to just right, and the pickle radish is always my favorite.
Maheeka Samayadasa
Food is average. I ordered their spicy chicken and vegetables dish with some steamed rice. It was flavoursome, however I wasn't a big fan of that dish (too tangy to keep eating it). Also tried the wings; the plain and the spicy. It could use a little more seasoning or a touch of lime to balance it off. The corn cheese dish was nice. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary.

I'm not sure if I'd visit this joint again..
Hello. Imnikki
From a small shop on Little Lonsdale Street, Gami has multiplied like bunnies and has outlet in 5 suburbs to keep up with the never-ending demand for their cholesterol-inducing fried chicken. Tip #1: St Kilda takes booking, Fitzroy doesn't, and don't even bother with same day booking on weekends for Little Lonsdale as they will tell you "Sorry, fully booked". Tip #2: Corn and cheese from Fitzroy is a lot of cheese, not enough corn. Great if you love cheese, not so great if you actually want to consume corns. Tip #3: The quality of the fried chicken is the same at all the outlets I have tried (the two CBD outlets, Fitzroy and St Kilda) so if you are not going to order fried chicken, I don't know what you are doing eating at Gami. The skin is crispy, the meat is moist and doused in sweet sticky sauce, it's best washed down with an ice cold beer. Tip #4: The spicy seafood soup is great during cold weather. A little bit spicy, a whole lot of piping hot seafood scattered throughout, it warms you up real quick. Order at your own risk in summer. Tip #5: Gami specialises in chicken and beer. Keep that in mind when ordering and you won't be disappointed.
Tony
One of, if not the best, Korean fried chicken options in Melbourne.

Very glad that Gami has opened up so many outlets. Always order some kind of combination of fried chicken (with or without sauce), corn cheese (very yummy), and always wash it down with korean beer. Chicken and beer, perfect combination.

A very small and decent looking place with staff that is very welcoming and lovely, run by an Asian family it is to be expected that they give everyone a satisfying service at their place. Not only that I visited here a couple weeks back, and ordered the chicken wings and boy was it delicious nothing better to be expected from fried chicken honestly who can pass up this opportunities, a lot of food was given out and it was absolutely delicious and I can't forget the feeling and the taste that was given to me by the heavens that night. For the love of good please visit this place.

A very small outlet in comparison to the other Gami's. Nonetheless, it's a place that will satisfy your appetite. I like the location of this outlet. When something is mentioned on brunswick st, I have the highest expectations of a vibrant crowd. Cool people and cool atmosphere. The staff were friendly and great to communicate with.
My friend and I ordered the original boneless. Great flavour with the sweet chilli sauce, texture is good, taste is meaningful.
The only thing I could fault was their facilities. Restrooms for both sexes are a must. 1 is unacceptable, imo.

First things first: the vegan chicken did not live up to the hype. Now, as a Melbourne-residing vegan of 18 years (and counting) there is no excuse to use substandard mock chicken. Gami, go across the road to the Cruelty Free store and see the Buddhist mock meat selection in their freezer. NO EXCUSE. This version was actually inedible, not too dissimilar to what I imagine a piece of battered and overly salted fried old boot resembles, in both taste and texture. The purportedly sous-vide fries tasted like your average boring chips from the local chippy. I don't even like chips so I don't know what possessed me to order them in the first place. Morbid curiosity and false advertising courtesy of the term sous-vide? Who knows? I'm not exactly sure where the sous-vide method of cooking came into play here, but that's by the bye. The vegetable dumplings were your stock standard MSG laden nonsense found in the freezer of every Asian grocer in town. I know that the chicken is supposed to be the highlight of this place, but come on, guys. There's no need to compromise. On the plus side, the fried rice cakes in chilli sauce were delicious (but then anything can be made delicious with the addition of gochujang.) Pity they don't do a vegetarian tteokbokki. I think this is a place best left to the omnivores. Or fans of deep fried footwear.

Chicken and beer - how could you go wrong!

To be clear, you don't come here for health food or a detox. You will definitely feel 'full' and feel the calories. But you know what you're getting when you come here.

We got the boneless chicken, half sweet chilli and half garlic soy - both being pretty damn tasty! We also opted for a side dish of potato heaven, clearly thinking we would run out of good. This was really rich, cheesy but delicious - but we really didn't need the extra food.

The tap beer was surprisingly moorish, and all in all, I enjoyed eating here. But it is definitely a 'sometimes' treat.

I've been wanting to try gami chicken for a while but I was left a bit disappointed. Ordered the boneless chicken, half original and half spicy. The original was ok but the spicy chicken covered in sticky spicy sauce. I had spicy fried chicken and eaten a lot of different spicy fried chicken before and they all tasted better than this. We also had the gami chips and mozzarella sticks, that was average. The staff weren't very attentive (on a non busy night) had to ask for water a few times and actually had to come up and get it myself.
Zoe
Finger lickin' good... get your gob around it, don't wear white and enjoy :) very tasty stuff! Cosy setting hole in the wall type place. Must try. Also for the cheese freaks... try the sticks (below)
Happy Kath
Too much cheese & too much sweet. The chicken was ok but the sauces were far too sickly sweet. The rice cakes in sweet sauce were quite nice, crisp on the outside & chewy inside. I don't think I'll go here again. I think they need to revisit the menu to give it a bit more of a savoury balance.
Maz
Ate here tonight with a booked group. Service fantastic, food fantastic. Everyone enjoyed the atmosphere & especially the four litre kegs! I'm vegetarian & easily got fed happily with the staff very helpful when discussing intolerances etc. only minor negative is that it's a small venue & I think bookings required most times-I can see they will be (& was) busy! Hubby had been to cbd location & recommended we try Fitzroy (close to home yay)-
Will return, thanks gami.

So tonight I was doing a spot of book shopping on Brunswick St Fitzroy (Vale Polyester Books) when as I wandered down the street I was offered a small gift box of the most delicious friend chicken from Gamiā€¦. Normally I donā€™t accept give aways but the waitress had a nice smile and I was starting to think about dinnerā€¦ Ā Dham! Let it be said that free gift fried chicken is not to be sniffed at! It was wonderful. Crisp, not overly salty and the flesh was so so tender!
