Review Smith Street Trader - Fitzroy

Nice coffee shop on Johnston St end of Smith St. Cakes are fab!!

Wonderful place. We went there with a big group (27 people), realistically too big, but the staff did a sterling job trying to keep up. They were very pleasant, food was excellent, coffee good. I was very happy with how it went even though there were a few hiccups with orders. That was entirely acceptable given the circumstances and no one was bothered that a couple of things got a little mixed up. I'm sure during a normal day they would be extremely precise.

We have been here a few time for dinner and after work drinks. What a great place! Really love the the variety of dishes on the menu, and their great range of Craft Beers on tap, cocktails and the super wine list.

Down in Melbourne for the weekend and gladly stumbled across this cafe while looking around. Amazing food and exceptional service. If you're looking for a good place to eat with great food you can't go past Smith St. Trader.

Nice little unpretentious cafe/bar. There is a nice little courtyard out the back. Typical of the area, the decor is a bit grungy. But the food is pretty good. The breakfast burrito was my favourite.

Excellent food. Staff take pride in their food and good service. In the short time I have been coming here they seem to have a high level of respect for different types of clients and are able to handle some of the more old school Fitzroy/Collingwood people kindly if they are simply after a coffee or a cut lunch.

Have dined here several times for breakfast which has always been great. Booked for dinner last night for the first time with my wife. Food & service was friendly. Finished with a delicious chocolate pudding for dessert.

Great coffee, 50 cents cheaper than most places on Smith st. I go there for the complimentary gingerbread man they give with every coffee, it's a really nice touch!

> Breakfast special corn fritters with istra bacon, poached egg served on a bed of crispy coleslaw AND Breakfast burrito with free range smoked eggs, istra bacon + homemade smoky BBQ sauce| <

Smith Street Trader has been on my list of cafes to go to for about 6 months now, and I FINALLY got around to going! As we arrived the staff were smiling and eager to have us sit down and enjoy the experience there. Because they are not just a brunch spot, the atmosphere is very much like a night venue, so it is much more relaxed than a typical on the go café.

We were recommended to get these two tasty dishes and were very satisfied with both of them.

Breakfast Burritos’ are a new breakfast food for myself because not too many places offer them, however, I was really excited to give it a try and spice things up a little. It was quite delicious and I wasn’t expecting it to be much, but the combination of the bacon and egg released so many flavours and juices that it was too hard to not like this dish! It the wrap was very thick but with the amount stuffed inside, it had to be! The dish is generous and will leave you feeling full for a while. The bacon had a really nice, strong, smoky flavour, and the egg was thick and cooked perfectly.

These fritters have a lot of flavour to them, but are a little dry. The corn flavour is really strong, which is positive because they are corn fritters, but the coleslaw is dry did not work well with this dish. The portion size is huge so you will be full after demolishing this! The poached egg helps with the dryness of the fritters so the dish does balance itself out.
Overall, both these dishes were delicious and filling

The breakfastpiggy team
Piggies out, Oink oink 🐷🐷

Been a couple of times for lunch and once for dinner. Each time was a little quiet as it was either after the main lunch peak or they were having a function. Very attentive service each time. Sat out the back on a cold winter night for dinner nice and cosy under the heater. Food was great each time being cooked just right. Burger seemed fine but toastie was done with right combination of ingredients and toasted just right. For dinner the carbonara was light and my friends soup special was satisfying. Hand cut chips the first time and sweet potato fries were perfect. Will be back for more

Stumbled across this place for breakfast during a weekend away in Melbourne. Easy to read menu with a wide selection of food and drink. Simple food done well for a good price with great service. We will definitely be back!

A pleasant breakfast
Other reviews are correct
The bread is lousy

[Please please please management do yourselves a favour and improve the bread quality.]

We waited a while for something very simple.

The service was good, our waitress very helpful.

Our poached eggs came hard boiled and our knives couldn't cut the bread properly. I usually avoid working hard to cut up my breakfast as it takes away the enjoyment of eating out. My hash cake was an oil sponge.

The portion was also unusually small.

Two of us got the mushroom and poached egg breakfast with a juice each and a coffee and we paid $62. When your meal is not enjoyable and then you pay too much for it then it really leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.

Will not be going back and I hope this review prevents other people from overpaying for a crappy breakfast.

Been here for breakfast & lunch several times & the food has always been good. They have just started a Thursday Steak Night with a glass of shiraz. Porterhouse was great with mushrooms, carrots a tasty jus & hand cut chips. Shiraz wasn't the normal cheap house red it was a lovely Two In The Bush Shiraz. Finished off with an amazing Tarte Tatin. Keep up the great work guys.
Had lunch here yesterday. Had been before the place was renovated. The food was outstanding and service spot on. I sat out the front, one of the staff put the heater on for me as it was a little chilly. Enjoyed the Vegetable Soup special with cheesy garlic bread....wow! When I went to leave I saw they had a covered courtyard/beer garden out the back, investigated further and it would be the perfect place for a quiet drink or to even have a birthday party. They also have a heater out there as well! Love love love the renovation! Just what Smith Street needed!

Went here a while ago when we saw a happy hour offer from the car and had a spontaneous drink in the window. The couple sitting next to us raved about the place and the food. Last Sunday we went for a quick dinner. All the meat is free range which is awesome. Service was friendly. We had the burger and the schnitzel. The burger was average, the fries were nice. The schnitzel was nice, I liked the onion rings but buddy didn't.

Where fun goes to die. They managed to suck out every little bit of soul that Bebida left behind. Blank, vibeless and overpriced mediocrity.

There are a lot of great cafes around Smith Street in Collingwood. The Smith St Trader is not one of them. The waitress came back to check on my order, but I was given the wrong meal anyway. Then I had to pay an extra $7 for their mistake. When I mentioned that I had actually ordered eggs on toast with mushrooms, the cashier said that the waitress was new and didn't know the menu. How is this my problem? And why should I have to pay for their mistake? I was served probably 500 calories more than I ordered and had to pay for the oil as well. The mushrooms were dry and the eggs were better than expected, but the tea was absolutely insipid. Very disappointing.

Food was terrible overpriced and small portions with no effort. Really disappointing meal. Hotcakes special was stupidly small and looks like they are made from the shake bottle supermarket ones. Won't return

Came here for lunch, service was average... waited about 30mins or more for a small pizza and steak sandwich. The pizza dough was undercooked and there were big clumps of rapidly solidifying cheese. The steak sandwich isn't a sandwich... it had no salad to balance out the cardiac arresting pile of greasy meat and cheese. I feel gross. Wasn't worth the wait. The only good thing was the atmosphere and that's where it stopped (abruptly). Not coming back.

We love this new addition to Smith St. The team are friendly and helpful. The food is really good. It's become our go to place. They are working on getting better, trying new things. A great place!!

Pretty disappointed with this place. Coffee was terrible, too bitter, and the service was bad. If you want to be a cool kid then you may as well do yourself a favour, get out of hospitality industry! It's harmless to say hi and give customer a smile, won't hurt!

The coffee here is pretty good, but I found the service and fairly plain food options to be a little bit lacking - especially when there are so many great options nearby.

Great for breakfast/brunch/light lunch, in my case it was brunch but at around late lunchtime. Staff was prompt and engaging and food was fresh and nicely presented. Eggs, hash and bacon was very much appreciated by the husband and my margarita pizza although slightly charred at the base was delicious in its simplicity, some might have see the portion sizes on the small size but it was perfect for us because we tend to have impromptu post lunch/pre dinner snacks. Coffee was done well as was the soy hot chocolate, it was dark and semi bitter which i prefer over the commercial overtly sweet milk chocolate variety and the highlight was the bloody mary, i should have skipped the pizza and had nothing but these delicious bloody mary cocktails, the spicy savoury horseradishy goodness was bliss! Will he back for these! Best brunch cocktail so far

Disapponting lunch here today. The salad was nice enough, well dressed, but may as well have skippes the chicken and saved my $2... dry, tasteless, miniscule amount. And to top it off, there was a hair at the bottom of my salad. Ew.
