Review Hao Phong - Footscray

What a blast! Definitely visit here next time. We got Special Pork Chops 🐖 Rice & Special Grilled chicken 🐓 with Rice. Such a huge protion. Worth it. Presentation was full of variety, there were carrots pickles, egg, shredded pork on side. Vietnamese signature sweet and sour dipping sauce. Great fragrance, I can tell they use secret citronella receipts to marinate the meat. Perfect balanced savoury-flavours. 🥰lovin it

Popular and busy place on the main strip in Footscray. Tables turn over pretty quick so able to be seated without a booking. Simple decor and a little squishy - enough room though that you aren’t uncomfortable. Helpful staff and food was pretty good too. Complimentary hot tea on the tables is a lovely little touch.

Delicious vietnamese broken rice. If u enjoy girlled pork with some fat u must try their broken riceee. Reasonable pricing. Good portion. Its a bit tight inside in terms of space. Free tea to cleanse your palate before eating.

Killer serving size, fresh juicy pork with excellent BBQ aroma. Perfect meal for less than $15 🙏🏼

This place never disappoints !!! Food comes out quick and is always steaming hot and delicious. Service is quick and attentive - my favourite dish is the salted fish fried rice and the quails ! (But to be honest everything is pretty good here) If you still have stomach space afterwards definitely try the panna cotta logan lychee dessert - so refreshing 😛

Absolutely amazing. One of the best traditional Vietnamese places in the area. Delicious food and good vibes. The drinks were super refreshing!! There was a cute waiter named Beckham too I think? Treated us so well and politely mannered. Definitely coming back here every time I’m in the area. 11/10.

- Grilled Pork Bowl w Satay and Dry Vermicelli - Prawn Rice Paper Roll - Wonton Soup w Rice Noodle - BBQ Pork Bowl w Rice Noodle Dry - Honey Chicken in Batter - Vegetarian Spring Rolls I was recommended this authentic Vietnamese restaurant by one of my best friends, who swears it is her favourite. My favourite out of all the meals ordered was the Grilled BBQ Pork bowl, I felt so healthy and fresh afterwards. The honey chicken was also delicious and apparently their avocado smoothie (sounds odd I know) is amazing!

What a restaurant! Beautiful authentic lovely Vietnamese food. Customer service is top tier along with quality and price. One of my favourite places to go!

My favourite restaurant in Footscray. I eat here perhaps once a fortnight or so, never had a bad meal. I love their vermicelli with grilled pork, seafood fried rice noodles and clay pot rice. It’s the best of both worlds, Chinese and Vietnamese food under one roof. The shakes are delicious too. The price use to be very good but have been creeping up steadily the last couple of years so getting less competitive.

Came here for lunch, and was served the single most salty plate of noodles I’ve had in my entire life. My friend tasted and said it tasted like seawater. Called the waiter over, who tasted the noodles and told us it was fine? Then he said next time just order less salty. He was rude and condescending in the way he dealt with the matter until another waitress came and gave us a new plate. The new plate had no salt at all and tasted burnt with singe marks on the noodles. We didn’t even bother asking for a remake this time, simply paid and left.

You have lost a long term customer by how you dealt with a simple problem which could’ve been handled much better.

Will not be back.

Hao Phong is our preferred Deliveroo option when we want Vietnamese. Their pho is excellent but we really like the beef sesame noodles too. They get a million points for consistency. We order from them once or twice a week and the food that arrives is always indistinguishable from our previous order. Ingredients are fresh and the food is always delicious.

Went there on a weekend for lunch. It was packed! The atmosphere reminded me of home. It was really cosy, packed, full of people enjoying the food. This place is known for their pho and grilled pork chop broken rice.

I had the grilled pork chop with broken rice and bbq pork with egg noodle. Both of them were soooooo good!! I'm bold enough to say it's the best viet restaurant in melbourne. Super authentic.

The portion is big and it's relatively cheap!! This is a must-go place when in Melbourne guys.

Hao Phong is easily my go to for Vietnamese food when in Footscray. Their broken rice with pork chops (com tam) is the best I’ve had in Melbourne. The pork is full of flavour and so juicy. Highly recommended! Their other dishes are also delicious I’ve never had a dish I didn’t love.
Gwen Kong
Staff is not friendly, felt that we were rushed and other half of our meal was too oily. For what we ordered it was overpriced.
The Honest Glutton
Hands down, this restaurant makes the best Grilled pork on rice (Com Tam) in the western suburbs. The meat is so tender, juicy and flavoursome! Not an inch of dryness. They do it super well here, I’m impressed. I didn’t realize how bad other restaurants made this dish until I ate it here. Now I won’t go to another restaurant for it.
They also give you two Pork pieces instead of one!

I also ordered crispy chicken on tomato rich which was average and salt and peppered tofu which was way too heavily battered. The Com Tam has earned the 4 stars though.

Good food but ridiculous byo charges! If it's not byo friendly then please just don't do byo at all! They do good food but overall the service has been below average. Once we told them we didn't want peanuts in our food they actually served us extra peanuts. 😓
Foodie
I loved their broken rice. Their pork chop was tender and full of flavour. Their pickled veggies was very crisp and fresh. Their shredded pork did not have any smell which is great.
Edward
Very disappointing experience here today. The wait staff stuffed up our order, and still has the audacity to insist the order he served us is correct, and absolutely refused to change it. This is the 2nd time stuffups happened. We gave you another chance before; you have just lost the business of the 10 of us.

A decent joint for family friendly Vietnamese food. No frills, just solid servings that will leave you satisfied and full.

A couple of what we ordered:
🍚 Grilled Pork Chop on Broken Rice: cơm tấm sườn ($11.00)
🌱 Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce: cải rổ xào dầu hào ($14.80)
🍤 Deep Fried Prawn with Coated with Salted Egg Yolk: tôm chiên lân lòng vàng hột vịt muối ($24.80)

Review:
Would really recommend the Deep Fried Prawn with Coated with Salted Egg Yolk!
It sounds strange but incredibly Chinese influenced with its Salted Egg Yolk twist. It really added that savoury depth to an otherwise ordinary deep fried prawn dish.

It was a quick crowd favourite on the table!

My score 3.0 stars. J & I had lunch here on Fri 15th Feb – we have been here many times as it used to be our fav Viet place on this side of town. The vermicelli salad w beef in vine leaf was our benchmark for this type of dish. This time we had one of our other all-time fav dishes – Prawn meat, eggplant, capsicum & tofu Claypot rice > Firstly the broccoli & bokchoy has been replaced with green beans & just put on top, so it was not integrated! There was less sauce, so much less tasty than before. Finally it has gone up in price to $14. The positives were: It still had the lovely rice crunch from the bottom of the claypot & the stuffed items were good. No longer the benchmark ☹️. We also tried Pork chop combo (me mainly) w broken rice ($12) > The actual pork chop was quite thin, but very moist. The “egg” meatloaf (Cha Trung?) was ok, but felt “padded” out. The “bi” was ok, but a bit salty. The rice, egg & side veg were all ok. The Nuoc cham was good & quite spicy.
The accompanying free soup had pork, chicken, chunky carrots, white beans (a bit hard 👎) & some kind of clear mushroom/fungus – it was quite porky in flavour & I didn’t enjoy it that much TBH.
Chinese tea was free - service was ok but a bit “cold”. Overall we left dissappointed when we normally leave with huge smiles on our faces. Not sure if there has been chef or management changes 😕, but today this wasn’t the HP we have loved in the past. BTW up until today I would have given 4.5 stars as an average over many many visits. Unfortunately HP is no longer our “go to” Viet place... ☹️

This has got to be one of the best tasting ones in town. The Chicken or Grilled Pork Broken Rice is the best I've ever had. Always end up craving that. Also, their noodles are delicious too. If you were to try a dish.. I'd highly recommend recommend the Broken Rice or the BBQ Grilled Chicken on Tomato Rice or Vermicelli noodles.

Food 4/5
Environment 4/5
Service 4/5
They do not only offer Pho, but also the other Asian popular dishes. It doesn't mean that they cannot provide a good pho, and they really did. Their pho is delicious and soup base taste sweet and fresh. The BBQ PORK with rice is amazing as well. Compared with the others, they have good quality and environment.

Definitely my favourite Vietnamese restaurant in Footscray. My family and I have been coming here for years now. Super friendly staff and the food is always on point - crispy egg noodles are always my go to!
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: a local classic to go to for a Vietnamese cuisine.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: the crunchy noodles with combination vegetables and meats is the best thing I’ve had - it’s freshly fried so the noodles are delicious. The fried flat noodles with beef is also very good - the beef is tender and noodles are soft.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: you can’t expect service to be great here so be sure to order exactly what’s on the menu.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: great place for a quick feed but don’t expect anything fancy.

Better than most Vietnamese joints at Footscray.

ordered:
Grilled pork chop, with shredded pork and pork loaf on broken rice: $11.00

Review:
Love Vietnamese broken rice because Mum rarely never makes it at home and it’s a real treat when she does! But when you have that craving Footscray’s vast Vietnamese restaurants have you covered. I reckon this place has the best broken rice grilled pork I have! It has the char grilled favour, its incredibly Smokey on the outside but extremely juicy on the inside! Shredded pork was a nice addition to the dish, pork loaf was the best I had in Footscray..it doesn’t have too much msg like the one opposite chain chain. It comes to your table nice and quick, and fills you up to the brink. I really enjoyed their soup accompanied with the rice dish, it had a natural tasting chicken stock flavour with fresh veggies! Definitely didn’t have much msg in that broth :). But nothing really wowed me it was only slightly better than the places I’ve been!

Was a regular before change of management/ owner. Last night will be the last time. I was asked to pay 20c for the extra plastic containersto take my left over food home. Food not as tasty as it used to be. Staff look miserable and the nice vibe has gone...my guess because the owner is overbearing and wants everyone to know ‘who’s the boss’
Lorena
The owner is very mean trying to chase me and my baby out because I have a pram. I always go there for last 3 years and I have just recently gave birth. The owner gave excuses that there is no safe space for the baby in the pram, he wants me to carry my 3 months old baby and have lunch at same time. We were very sad and disappointed, in the pass we always recommend people to go there. Farewell Hao Phong and your shameless&heartless hospitality. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Jonathan Song
The worst service, the owner not welcome anyone with baby pram, keep mention that the hot soup will spill on the pram and baby. As a parents who will like to hear the word like that, We left the shop very disappointed, we used have a good expression of the shop, but not anymore. Not going back and recommend to any of our friends.

Very satisfying and big portion for takeaway. Always order the grilled chicken with fried egg, shredded pork, meat loaf on broken rice. For more foodie goodness follow my ig: emptystomach

I've been here 3 times - I was recommended by my Vietnamese friend. When Vietnamese recommends Vietnamese food - it means it is authentic and yum. Recently we had grilled pork vermicelli, pork spring roll and sugar cane prawn vermicelli. They were so delicious! The grilled pork was on point! I wish I could have it everyday
Bao Nguyen
Loose packing. Got an order from Deliveroo. The order comes with half of my drinks spilled everywhere since the place use cheap and loose container. The food was fatty and stink

I have been to Hao Phong twice. I had a really great experience the first time so on our second visit decided to take my cousin who just came from overseas telling them that Hao Phong is one of the best Asian restaurant in Footscray area. But the second time we went there wasn’t pleasant at all. The lady who was serving us(Asian with blonde hair) was really rude to us when we asked some question regarding the dish we wanted to order she just gave us weird faces and said NO. And when she came with our dishes, she was just banging plates on to the table. It was very awkward for us as we had bought guest.
I do not have any issue with food thou.
I understand that customer service can be hectic but we do not deserve to be treated like that.
We Wouldn’t be going back again!!
FoodieUS
We enjoyed the food at this restaurant even though we had heard about previous issues with the health authorities shutting down the restaurant.

We had a table for 10 and despite advertising BYO would only allow us to drink 1 bottle of wine between the entire table and still insisted on charging $3.90/glass corkage.

This is misleading & the most bizarre customer service experience I have ever witnessed in a restaurant.

When I objected to the charge on the bill and refused to pay it the owner threatened to call the police!?!?

Avoid this restaurant, there are a plethora of better options in the area with friendly and helpful service as well as delicious (& safe) food.

Left without eating tonight. New owner was so awful to us! We have been eating at hao phong for 15 years. We were even there the new years eve they had the health scare. Never had an issue loved dining there. Never again. We were told it was the law to only allow one bottle of byo per table tonight. We had two bottles of byo wine between 6 of us.
We left, new owner got very angry and yelled at us when we questioned "the law". Went up the road a bit and vouched never to return
Ariel Barrett
Although the food is nice and served with decent size in this restaurant, I am disappointed at the dishonesty of the restaurant. When my 70 old mother went to pay for the bill, our bill was added two extra drinks that we never ordered, all the other items on the bill were correct.
Customers need to be careful with their bills in this restaurant. I believe this is surely not an accident. After I checked the bill and questioned the owner at the counter about the overcharge, the owner simply said that my mother misquoted him the table number therefore he typed out the wrong bill. When I walked passed the table number that was "misquoted" according to the restaurant owner, they ordered very different food from the bill that we received; therefore the previous bill that we received was for our table and was intentionally added extra items. My mother clearly recalled that she quoted the correct table number. For those who enjoy a lovely meal, surely pay attention to the bill afterwards.
Hello. Imnikki
With some many Vietnamese eateries in Footscray, it's hard to choose which one to go to when the craving for Vietnamese food hits. We parked just opposite Hao Phong and in we went. Decision made.

Right after sitting down, we were too busy eyeing what the table next to us were eating to even look at the menu. Decision made again.

The Grilled Pork Chop, Fried Egg, Pork Loaf and Shredded Pork Rice (#48) was a winner. The pork chops were tender and flavourful, and there wasn't one bad element on the plate. The Braised Duck with Egg Noodle Soup (#85) was also a great dish, although I would have liked the herbal soup to be much stronger in flavour. The braised duck was faultless though - very moist and tender.

Noticed that another reviewer mentioned that complimentary soup comes with rice dishes but I didn't get one. Not a deal breaker though. The meal was delicious and affordable, what more can I ask for?

This is our all time favorite Vietnamese restaurant.. must order - grilled chicken on broken rice.. portions are huge .. quality is always consistent.. we have ordered variety of foods in the past but are never disappointed.. if you are ordering rice dishes, you will get a complimentary soup of the day.. do visit this Vietnamese restaurant if you are around Footscray area..

Family-style vietnamese eatery (3.7⭐)

Ambience: The place is pretty big, with seatings inside as well, though the ones at front is a bit crampy. The place is not the cleanest, but not dirty. We find the table bit too crampy for the 5 of us (it's a table for 4)

Service: We were directly seated at the table for 4 near the window, but we saw an empty long table beside us and decided to move, but were told that it's for eight. Thus we went to the back side of the restaurant, but the only table available was the same size as the first. Nonetheless the girl serving us was nice, and food came out pretty quick. It is however a pain to call the staffs since the staffs were mainly at the front part of the restaurant. So sometimes one of us had to walk to the front or just wait for them to walk pass us.

Food: Pho (large) was yes, LARGE. Soup was tasty, beef slices, tendon and balls were all nice and tender, though can be bit more generous. Beansprouts and basil leaves were pretty fresh too. The noodle was nice, without being too soft nor hard.

Beef vermicelli bowl were yum as well, and again generous. Beef itself nicely marinated, vermicelli were nicely done, vegs were fresh and crunchy, sauce was the usual fish sauce, but everything combined, it was great.

Broken rice was really yum and generous, pork chop was well marinated and not hard, egg was well done, pork skin salad was yums and loaded, pork meatloaf was tasty, rice were cooked just right and the carrot was pickled so enjoyable!

My sister had a custom vegetarian claypot with rice and she enjoyed them, also generous portion. The fried Japanese tofu was pretty good too, though nothing very special.
Tea on the side was so warm and nice, goes so well with the dishes.
Vietnamese coffee was great, though it was like 1/3 the cup. (Asked for ice to be separated)

Oh also I love love the chili oil with fried shallots!

Price: Definitely reasonable for the taste and portion.

YUM: pho, vermicelli salad, broken rice, that chilli and shallot oil!
NAH: none

photos: go to photos section for detailed description

( follow for more!✨)

xx,joelle

I've been to this restaurant 3 times based on other's recommendations. The first time I visited this restaurant, I had the Grilled Pork Chop, second was the Grilled Pork Vermicelli and lastly, I tried the Pho (or Rare Beef Rice Noodle Soup).

The standout dish at this restaurant is definitely the broken rice; more specifically, the Grilled Pork Chop, Fried Egg, Pork Loaf and Shredded Pork on Broken Rice (or alternatively, the chicken version). The pork is nice and tender and you definitely get value for money.

I wouldn't eat the Pho there again (there are plenty of other good Pho places around Footscray), but the Grilled Pork Vermicelli was pretty decent.

I am basing my review on the Broken Rice dish - it's that good!
Tamara
Such a fan over a long period of time...had lunch order today, Singapore noodles, beef satay, salt & pepper calamari. They have lost me 🙁
Don’t know what’s happened but very ordinary, yuck food...sorry
Madam Cranky Pants
Yum beef & beef ball pho delicious. The beef fried rice was great. Satay chicken was delicious. Beef lemongrass noodles very fresh. Definitely worth a stop if your in Footscray.
Quick service, clean restaurant

Hao Phong is my go-to-place for the broken rice and grilled pork combo. It is very delicious and is the one thing that I always order when I come here. It's very reasonably priced for the big portion of food, not to mention, it comes with free soup. The other item that I have tried on the menu is the claypot rice with prawn stuffed vegetables, which taste alright but I still prefer the broken rice for better value for money. The service is fast and I don't have to wait to be seated each time, which is great!
StepiiGM
Tasty spring rolls (on its own, before I dip them then into the sweet sauce). Great pho too, beef is tender and sliced thinly.

Awesome porkchop and grilled chicken! Food is good in general. But fish congee was a bit of a let down - not much flavor. And definitely no grated ginger in there.
Vivian Vo
Usually come here with family and the staff are welcoming and nice. The food is good, when I’m sick I love the congee, and the servings are adequate size.
Bear Noms
Your one stop shop for authentic Vietnamese food! Tried an assortment of dishes including grilled pork and chicken with vermicelli which were delicious. You can’t go wrong with spring rolls! The crispy quail was a bit too salty for me. Also loved the avocado smoothie... mmn nmn!!
Sarah O
Really great food! Fresh, amazing flavours, texture and generous servings! I had the wonton 🍲 which was delicious the 🦐 and 🐷 Coleslaw which is a 10/10 dish and the banana 🍌 fritter 🍦 which was a retro nod to the 80’s and super yum! Highly recommend and will be returning frequently.
Aks
I'd like to give it a 3.5 though... the food was a mix of very good and good dishes... we had the prawn spring rolls which was good, chicken pho - very good, chicken mushroom clay pot rice - was ok and grilled chicken and pork with rice which was very tasty... Overall it was a good learning experience of the Vietnamese food culture..
Daniel
My favourite place for the Trout and BBQ Pork Claypot. Delicious! I also love the coleslaws. The only downside is the service. The waiters gave us a bucket of rice with no bowls and cups with no tea. They need additional training!
Kennn2
Nothing bad. Tried combination fried rice and drop noodle by my accident, but was great though. Cheap price, Large meal, happy day. Surcharge for card.
Florence McLennan
I can’t really fault this place! Good food, big servings for a reasonable price. Very quick service and friendly staff. Will definitely come back!
Eatingmakesmehappy
We love this place!! Better pho than any other (the ones I’ve tried) in CBD. Large portions of pho noodles, meat and sprouts, and the broth was very flavorful. The rice paper rolls were also yummy, especially the dipping sauce! It was mixed with some peanut, sugar, and fish sauce(maybe?), super yummy!! We went there during Saturday lunchtime and not very busy then. Chilled and relaxing vibe. They have an extensive menu which also offers some Chinese and HK food. Pho was so filling that I didn’t feel like having dinner on that day. Highly recommend:)

One of the few restaurant in footscray that open till 9.30pm. Most of the restaurants here close around 8.30pm.

The staff was nice, and the service was quick.

We ordered
No. 48: broken rice with grill pork chop - pork chop and pork loaf was very tasty but the shredded pork was a bit hard and plain
No. 87: grilled pork chop with egg noodle - very nice, if you like spicy, try to eat it with siricha sauce provided pn the table. Pork chop was the same with the one on the broken rice
No. 41: grilled pork with rice vermicelli - my favourite. The pork was a bit sweet to complement the light taste of the rice vermicelli. Just beware that they put raw bean sprout in it. I had to put aside my raw bean sprout as I dislike it -- this one is very healty

Ambience of the restaurant is nice. Toilet is clean.
Jessica
Possibly one of the best Pho's I have had in Melbourne.

They looked busy so I assumed they must be good and they certainly we're!

Large Pho is $11 dollars and it's seriously a LARGE pho!

Highly recommend
Kevin Tu
Food here is not the same since new ownership. Bought 2 servings of Diced beef with tomato fried rice and it was such a disappointing meal. Two boxes were inconsistent, one had more onions and vegies than the other. The only thing that was the same between the two boxes were the smallest serving of beef ever, oh tasteless too. The rice were red but tasted bland. How can Hao phong do this to your food?
Kwin Donkeykong Doan
Came here for a quick lunch to satisft my pho cravings.

I went with the usual "Pho dac biet" or the special. Broth was flavoursome and not too oily.
My only gripe was the amount of meat they put in, it was a little less than usual.

All in all a good quick eat and an establishment i would return to.
Gaery
A place which is quite underrated (not sure why people go to the similar one next door), for the taste and value of the food.

The signature Vietnamese broken rice with chicken, shredded pork, egg and ham (aka "The Lot") was served generously - when paired with added soup and a dilute sweet chilli sauce - the marinated chicken tastes great.

The tomato rice and chicken was also good. Nice and crunchy on the outside, and a good addition to the normal sweet chilli sauce.

The general decor of the place, while not amazing, reflects the simplicity of the set up and the nonchalant atmosphere the place brings.

No obvious complaints. Good place for a decent meal.
Laura Kaziavin
5/11/3018 - EDIT - ever since they changed owners this place has gone down hill. Have been here three times since new owners and each time was worse than the last. The quail was dry and tasted like it had been refried, the pho was oily, flavor not as good as before and full of MSG- I was so thirsty after my meal!
Will not be returning anymore. Very disappointing as this used to be our regular joint.

13/10/2018- 5 stars- Before we moved to Wyndham Vale my partner and I used to come here 2/3 times a week! My favorite Pho place.
Always lots of meat and stuff in the pho and the broken rice is delicious too. The veggie spring rolls are yummy and I love the quail as well. Brought my dad here just for a quick dinner when we were in the area and he loves to pho too- said it’s better than his regular place in Springvale.
Luke And Hannah
Always a good meal here!

This place probs serve one of the best traditional Chinese Vietnamese food here in Melbourne with all the dishes being very balanced in taste and true to its root.

We have been here multiple times trying different dishes and always had a good time. Notable dishes include the combination broken rice, salt and pepper calamari, sweet and sauce pork, and Mongolian beef.

Service was quick and efficient.
Kimmy_desu
Really delicious pho! Lots of meat in there and a medium bowl was very filling for me. Also had the avocado smoothie and pork rice paper rolls which were great as well. However a bit much MSG in the pho which made me quite thirsty afterwards! But I guess that's always the case with Asian restaurants..

This restaurant opened 11 years ago, and is one of the best Vietnamese restaurant in Footscray. We live locally, and we have been coming here on a weekly basis.
Cindy
Love this restaurant. I always get the crispy chicken and it's absolutely delicious. Always enjoyable to come here and very affordable. Great service too.
Lexie
Perfection, we eat here atleast once a week but have been known to drop in twice!
The coleslaw and vermicelli salads are my favourite, but the peppersteak and mongolian beef are my husband's.
Delish, will probably go again tonight
Thunder8621
Signature dish here is the broken rice with the lot.....very hard to beat. The pork loaf is thick and juicy, and the pork chop is generally moist and well marinated. Other dishes also satisfactory

Love love love this little Vietnamese Chinese joint in Footscray!! Very busy most times, but a quick turnover ! The food is very flavoursome and plentiful!
I took my family and friends on separate occasions because I can't get enough of their grilled chicken!
I would recommend everyone to come and try their grilled chicken, so juicy and delicious 😋
Lizzy Keenan
Really yummy food! The beef fillet with black pepper, chicken satay and the salt and pepper squid were really yummy! Take away is ready in fifteen minutes. Fast and tasty!!!
Jeffry
Passed the Footscray after sending off friend to airport.

We were craving again the Vietnamese food and we saw this restaurant on the way back.

We ordered "Broken rice" - $11.00 and "Rice vermicelli grilled pork with extra spring rolls" - $11.00 + $2.50. The price was average for a broken rice, but it was little bit expensive compared to others for a rice vermicelli as it normally gets the spring rolls included.

The grilled pork on broken rice and rice vermicelli were so amazing, well cooked. The grilled pork was tasty, crunchy and really soft when you bite. It is highly recommended.

Unfortunately, the place wasn't clean and table was oily and dirty.
Bopnbeep
Great reviews here but I was pretty underwhelmed with my meal. Had the beef, ginger and shallot claypot rice which was rather bland, it hadn't been cooked long enough so the rice wasn't crispy on the bottom. This is one of the best parts of claypot rice. The beef was tender and that's about it, edible but not an overly tasty meal. The grilled chicken and pork dishes looked good and I had food envy. Better ordering next time.

Ever dependable! Hao Phong is a solid fixture of Footscray dining for good reason. Best broken rice in Footscray. Highly consistent with a huge menu like theirs is no fluke.
Audrey T
A regular at Hao Phong and never disappointed. Loved the pork broken rice and the prawn spring rolls. Very fast service. Will continue to return
Hangry Horace
Ordered prawn spring rolls, beef pho and broken rice with the works. The prawn spring rolls were crispy and so addictive that we had to order another portion. The pho was flavourful and the beef slices were tender but it was a little oily. I had to skim the oil layer off before drinking the soup. The pork cutlet that came with the broken rice was very flavourful and delicious but I wasnt a big fan of the shredded pork. Service was fast but somewhat cold.
John
I love Hao Phong. Have been coming here for nearly 10 years and still love coming back. I would recommend more of their chinese cantonese dishes rather than more traditional vietnamese food. Keep bringing my father in law and funnily enough reminds him of Hong Kong. Go for the fish congee, spring rolls and claypot rice.
Scrumptious GG
Beautiful dishes so far. Ordered from their chicken/pork broken rice, to deep fried chicken ribs with salted eggs, and never dissapointed. During lunch time, we had been given a compliment yummy chicken broth. Keep it up guys!
The City Lane
Hao Phong is a Footscray institution that’s always full of people enjoying the wide array of authentic Vietnamese and Chinese dishes on offer. What Hao Phong does best, and what keeps people returning for more, is the great food.
Daveyboy
I come here regular during the week. Below is the battered prawns in salty yoke (something on the lines of that) Amazing shit!!! And order xo egg noodles separate will fill you up.

Update same salty yoke with chicken ribs they are good!

400 blog reviews down! Hao Phong left me speechless with the generous portion sizes. It was mammoth. Myself and friends started off the new year checking out Footscray Market and headed along to Hao Phong for lunch. It offers a blend of Vietnamese-Chinese cuisine in a casual setting, not unlike many of the other eateries on Hopkins Street. The tea on table and DIY cutlery and all too familiar and you can also expect the same friendliness, speed and value as well. I veered from the group in ordering my own dish as well as getting away with a steal of some of the other plates. Imagine great tasting food, interesting flavours and an authentic experience.

I've been here a few times now and while it's certainly not fancy the food is fantastic. The dipping sauce you get when you order rice paper rolls is as good as I've had in Vietnam. I tend to order the Szcheun beef hotpot which can be anything from a kick of chilli to burning depending on the strength of the chillies they've used that day. Definitely strong bold flavours. Come here when you want something tasty and traditional you pretty much won't find anything that's better value for money

Finally find a place to land my vietnamese craving tounge, even though I had a broken rice with pork chop dish as my quick lunch, i can taste the grilled favour and lemongrass fr the porkchop, rice cooked perfectly. Valuable in price and portion. It definitely the honesty authentic vietnamese restaurant, and can beat the restaurants in springvale and richmond, love it and highly recommended.

Incredible atmosphere of locals which brings a lot of travellers in as clearly this is the place to go!
The meals were all large and very filling.
The fried chicken and vermicelli was one of the best Vietnamese meals I've eaten and I've been to Vietnam. The chicken was perfectly cooked, boneless, and very generous in size. This sat on top a bed of sprouts, herbs and vermicelli which once covered in the dipping sauce was sensational. My friends meals were also delicious from what I tasted.
Highly recommend if in Footscray.
My brother raves about this place for their broken rice. He thinks their broken rice is the best in Footscray. So my husband decided to try it out. I'm not a broken rice fan so I opted for a pho.

My husband said the broken rice was OK but not out of the ordinary. He gave it a 3/5.

My pho was nice but not as good as other pho places in Footscray. It would be a 3/5.

The spring rolls were piping hot and came with the right amount of vegetables which was a bonus. 5/5

Overall the place was nice but not as amazing as my brother had us to believe, in our humble opinion.

DO: Anything you fancy, but I recommend the broken rice pork chop or the deep fried chicken with tomato rice. Mmmm just like how mum makes it.

DON'T: Stop there, all the other pho and bun dishes are just as tasty one would suspect.

TIP: Go with a large group and sit out the back, it's a little more private and you can get a little noisier. Cheap and cheerful.

Hao Phong is one of the few places that open until 10pm in Footscray that serve very good food. I recommend the grilled pork on broken rice.

There was a leg in the fish sauce!!! Don't tell me it's a herb! I see a joint and two hairy parts of a fly's leg. You could say my appetite plummeted after that. Did I mention I had some of the sauce BEFORE I saw the leg?

If this is the leg, then where is the rest of the fly?!!

This place is awesome. It's fresh, its tasty, the not badly priced and you always come out feeling satisfied. That saying I found the service for a few of them waiters were a bit sulky maybe they don’t really want to work there or something,...

It is what it is. Busy, hasty service, good food quickly delivered. Big and varied menu and it looks like most of its good. Popular with locals. Go there when it's not so busy so you can hear your friends talk.

Went to Hao Phong on a fairly cold winters night, the free chinese tea they provide was very welcome, nice and warming. Had no trouble getting a table despite reports of having to wait. Service was okay, we had to wait a bit to catch the attention of someone after first ordering our entree.

We had vegetarian rice paper rolls for starters, they were very fresh and the peanut sauce they came with was super. For mains we had lemongrass and chilli beef even though it wasn't on the menu. We also had chinese broccoli with garlic sauce despite ordering it with oyster sauce. We also had plain rice for two and were provided with more than enough to go with our dishes. Both dishes were pretty good, though a little more lemongrass would have made it better.

The atmosphere at Hao Phong is nothing too special, some artwork on the walls, conference chairs for seating. No music just the buzz of noise from other diners.

Fairly priced, we'll probably go back again, but there will be no rush to do so.

Great service, delicious and cheap. They give generous portions and their food is amazing. For starters we had their pork spring rolls. For mains we had the beef pho, grilled chicken with egg noodles and pork chops on broken rice. I must say everything tastes authentic and hearty. You leave feeling satsfied to your hearts content.

What more can you expect when you have fresh produce available just a few blocks away from the Market! Good food👍 this is one of the best Vietnamese food joints I've ever been too! Service is so friendly and fast. All the dishes were spot on! For starters we tried their crispy quail, was so crunchy and full of flavour! The main was so hearty and you'd be surprised with their portion, so satisfying. Would recommend it to anyone.

Good service and great for small groups. Food was served fresh and portion size was generous. Taste is ok but also definitely worthy to compete with other restaurants along the same strip in Footscray.

Came here with my family, we all ordered different dishes and smoothies for the kids. My son got rice with crispy chicken, when we got home a few hours later he complained about a stomach ache and had diarrhea. Not sure from the food or drink. Would not be coming back.

Love Vietnamese food so went here based on high average rating...and wasn't disappointed! Walked in with no booking on a Friday night (2 pax) and had the honey chicken with some steamed rice, my gf had the vegetables pho. Right up there with the best honey chicken i have had, crispy outside with nice size chicken chunks (not just full of batter). The pho was of generous portion size as you would expect and hit the spot on the cold night! Would recommend and will go back!

In footscray, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to Asian restaurants, and Hao Phong is no exception. The meals are decently priced and of excellent quality. My go to meal is the Mongolian beef, which is served on a sizzling hot plate.

This place is everything you expect from a local Vietnamese place in Footscray. The place is packed, the decor old and tired but the food is authentic, comes out quick, is plentiful and tastes damn fine. Not being Vietnamese myself I can only guess that this place strikes the fine balancing act of keeping to its traditions whilst catering for the non Vietnamese clientele. The special fried rice is chock full of prawns and pork and the beef and black bean is surrounded by crunchy veggies and melts in the mouth. A couple of mains and an entree will set you back roughly $40-45. Great value for money..if you're anywhere near Footscray and have s Vietnamese hankering go no further than this little spot.

Yum! If around Footscray and you want some chinese takeaway, forget Poons or Jimmy Wongs.. Come straight here.

The food is authentic, fresh and reasonably priced.

Must try - sweet sour pork chops

Have tried a few of the Vietnamese places in Footscray now and this is my favourite. I have mainly only had either the phó or rice noodle dishes and they never disappoint. Very well priced meals and the service is adequate. Me and my friends will continue to come here!

Love coming here for lunch or dinner! Favourite dishes would be steamed barramundi in soy sauce, pippis in xo sauce with chinese sausage and cantonese beef steak. Service is quick. Prices are affordable.

Been coming here for years and will continue to come for many more - hands down best lemongrass and chili chicken I've ever had. I've tried all the places along Hopkins street and seem to always come back here.

Best ever chicken congee and freshly squeezed OJ. I've tried the other dishes such as clay pot rice and Spring rolls and they have all been really good.

I've tried the "Number 63" - clay pot rice with stuffed eggplant, capsicum and bean curd. It was really good, definitely going back for more 😋
