Review Hong Kong Bbq Restaurant - Footscray

Brandon Wong
Lovely lobster noodles, roast duck and roast pork. Kids loving it. The price is also fair and affordable. I have booked in advance and show vaccination cert when dine in.

We haven’t been to this Hong Kong style restaurant for a long time due to Covid. It is located in a busy foodie Hopkins St opposite Footscray Market- see photos below. A great selection on iys menu featuring stand-alone rice and noodles for individuals and also order dishes for group lunch or dinner. The lady serving us was very friendly and attentive to our needs. 5 stars in my eyes!

This family run restaurant has been around forever. It’s 2022 and I think they are the only restaurant in Melbourne with cash only policy. Been turn away a few times now due to their cash only policy. Very disappointed. The tables and the chairs and the decor are no change from 20 odd years ago when I went there the first time. Old and dirty. The food is pretty ordinary nothing special. Dont think I’ll be going back there again. Don’t know how long they’ll last.

I ordered a roast pork container and they gave me fatty offcuts. I am very disappointed with at I have received.
Francis Wong
You scammed my elderly mother with these bones - no meat whatsoever. You should be ashamed of yourselves!
Karen Chen
Ordered roast pork today which was great. Food came fast. Restaurant is oldish, I'm not sure hygiene wise but at least our table was wiped down.our food came with complimentary soup too which was nice. Don't mind going back to try other dishes. We took away some roasts the other time. Normally during weekends there would be a queue for take aways. The presentation of the dishes are just so so.

The sign as you walk in said Char siu was $10. I asked the counter lady if I could get 1 char siu. She said "ten dollars" but cut herself off mid sentence to ask how many I wanted and whether I wanted it cut up. I replied with just 1 and she said she would give me 1 for $20. I walked out and I won't be coming back here again.

I tried roast pork from all places from footscray to sunshine to St. Albans. But this place is the best one. It’s so juicy and tender. And not dry at all.
Kane Stuart
Bought a kilo of char siu, cost a fairly standard 35 bucks. Got home to find bbq fat. I'm not talking fatty pork, I mean literal slices of pure fat a centimetre thick. Out of the 1100-odd grams of product, we weighed out 760 grams of fat, the rest actual meat. I get times are tougher and belts are tighter, but if you're going to swap out the usual fillets for a cheaper cut, at least take some pride in trimming it up. Incredibly poor value. Not recommended.

Located on the main street in Footscray and serves up amazing roast pork and roast meat. I would usually get the roast pork and bbq pork with rice, the crackling is really good and the bbq pork has the charred flavours.

They do have other items on the menu that I would like to try, will definitely be back

Some work colleagues and I ordered some take away recently. I ordered the mixed roast duck and roast pork on rice.

The flavours of the meat were nice and flavoursome. The rice cooked perfectly and I loved the sauce that was soaked on top of the rice.

The duck was less meaty that I would have liked, quite bony actually. Unfortunately, I think it was the section of the duck that they gave me or perhaps the size of duck they used. Not bad value for money but I might try something else next time.

Usual spot for the family if we do have a good experience!
This place is a hit or miss.. sometimes you’ll get the best food and sometimes after eating here you don’t want to come back. If we do have a bad experience we’ll take a break from this place for a while but then come back since we’ve been going here for yearssss and when the food is good.. it’s GOOD!
Staff are ok.. they always walk off mid ordering I don’t understand why but it happens every time.

A hidden gem, Hong Kong BBQ serves has THE best Hong Kong BBQ I have had in Melbourne. The atmosphere of the venue definitely (and befittingly) makes you think you’re in a retro Hong Kong BBQ restaurant. The painting on the wall and the furniture takes care of that. The service here is also excellent; the aunties that served us on our visit were so kind and sincere.
Our table of 3 ordered a variety of their BBQ meats; this included a portion of their suckling pig (a special dish they do not always have available), crispy pork, roast duck and BBQ sweet pork. We also had the calamari, egg noodles and stir fried sweet potato shoots. And what a feast it was.
All the meats were delicious and had great texture. The suckling pig had a gloriously crunchy skin, the crispy pork also had great crackling but also had the perfect ratio of fat and meat, the duck had a lovely flavourful thin crispy skin and the meat was tender and juicy, and the BBQ sweet pork was juicy and well marinated.
The calamari was fried perfectly, the calamari itself was soft and tender while the batter had a great crunch and texture. However I found it to be extremely salty and over-seasoned, definitely get a carb dish to accompany this one!
The egg noodles were bouncy and chewy, and had been stir fried with spring onion, giving it a great fragrance and light flavour.
The sweet potato shoots, recommended to us by one of the lovely auntie waitresses, were exactly what we had been hoping for. Stir fried with shrimp paste and other seasonings, it accompanied the rest of our dishes perfectly - flavourful but not overwhelming.
I cannot wait to visit this place again to try more of their dishes, and get my next fix of Hong Kong BBQ.

Authentic Chinese bbq in the heart of footscray,
The food here is delicious and cheap compared to others,
You have a variety of which meats you want with your dish.
Nelson
Great place for their roast ducks and crispy pork dishes but also great for the mud crabs, lobster and prawns with stirfried noodles XO or ginger and springonion sauces.
Not the sort of place to dine and relax as it's a ever fast moving place and can be noisy with the racket of chairs moving around as they turn tables over

😱Lizzie’s first impression: been here many a times especially when I was younger - it hasn’t changed.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I love the three style duck where you can have Peking duck, the noodles and then the soup and congee. Such a great place for stir fried noodles and roast meats.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: it can get a little overwhelming with the staff shouting orders at each other but hey, that’s as good as it gets in Hong Kong.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place for a Chinese feast.

We come here on the weekend for lunch once in a while. Our favourite dish has to be the salted fish and chicken fried rice - you can never go wrong with that. The stir fried egg noodle combination is also pretty good, we really like the crispiness of the noodles and the sauce. The roast duck is alright here, but it’s not the best in the area.
Jessie Tran
Pretty good food. The fried rice and salted fish is really nice. The salt and pepper chicken is a bit too salty but it’s still nice and crispy. The suckling pig is also pretty good.

Been here many times. Always get BBQ duck and crispy pork on rice. Yummy and very taste. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Very enjoyable.
MissCat
Roast duck here is good, meat is juicy and tender. Roast pork is also crispy, we have asked for pork belly with more fats, yummy! Would definitely be back for lunch! Oh yes, they provide free soup too... 😋
Kerli Kerli Kerli
Very enjoyable roast pork, skin was crispy and there wasn’t too fatty... the soy chicken was average..
Was pretty busy in the evening, good place for some takeaway Chinese barbecue...
Will be back next time to try some of their other dishes..

Tasty Cantonese BBQ meats on rice. Service is quick and portion is generous. This place is always busy and one is expected to finish the meal quickly and go. If you overstay your welcome, the wait staff will politely ask you to pay the bills and offer your table to the next in line. The Hot and Sour Soup is really good if you like sour food! They do not have chili oil on the table so you will need to ask the wait staff for it.
Ms Rodrigo
Nope! The food was okay nothing to rave about but the waiter/cleaners taking big rubbish bags right in the middle of the service sorta ruined my appetite. It wasn’t very clean.
Linda
Great tasty cheap food. Duck skin is nice and crispy and noodles are flavoursome. Don’t expect fine dining here - it’s cheap reliable Chinese food. Tasty as! Service is good and quick
Andrew Mac
If you have longed for your mums cooking or your Asian mates mum's food, this is your one stop for that fix. Classic chinese food which tastes good and the ingredients are fresh.

If you're ordering the usual fried rice and springs rolls, change it up and order the really good dishes on the menu. Pipis in XO sauce and Chinese donut is great for seafood lovers, with Mongolian beef hotplate and a stir fry vegetables are the way to go. 3 varieties of bbq meat is a winner too. Bbq pork, Peking duck and soy chicken are excellent.

Those complaining about the soup, if you didn't order any soup. The soup which comes out is free, usually a good chicken bone soup with herbal ingredients. Followed by free green bean sweet dessert soup. Service is traditional and quick, don't expect conversational orders.

Quick and cheap Hong Kong BBQ entices you in with the promise of a good meal. Delicious and cheap ($1!) chicken wings! On to a winner. They are so tasty I would drive across town any day of the week for some of these bad boys. Their crispy pork is also worth it!

This is a great place if you're down for cheap, quick Peking duck and generous portions of Chinese food late at night. In exchange, however, the staff here are not openly communicative or friendly. The interior of the restaurant is just as outdated as its exterior - old and poorly-maintained. Service here is generally fast and efficient. The Peking duck set menu is a general favourite here, but the soup that is served to begin the set course tastes disappointingly similar to dish water.
Tania
Really authentic food. All their meats are made in house, the duck is my absolute favourite around this area. Generally pretty busy in the evenings, so try to come earlier or make a booking :)
Bradley Aitken
always busy with locals who know the food is good. bbq meats the specialty and very reasonable prices. Even happy to do off menu items. Eating here is like stepping back in time. Dont forget to ask for the free soup.

I was honestly so surprised that their GENEROUS serving of BBQ Pork and rice was only $10 a plate?! I wish I wasn't that hungry that I didn't take a photo but my rice mountain and covered from one end to the other and spilling with long and thick pieces of pork - and two large pieces of boy choy. They even gave our a soup starter and red bean after our meal. I'm definitely coming back here for bbq pork and rice! They could work on the interior though, if anything. Cash only.

Located on Hopskin st, opposite Footscray market, this restaurant offers Cantonese cuisine with ala Carte menu similar to the popular Pacific BBQ house. It is packed on Saturday dinner and the dining area is quite compact, not much room between tables. On both side of the walls, there are 3 different traditional Chinese hand painted murals. On each table, there is complimentary Chinese tea in bright thermal flask. We ordered 2 BBQ ( roast duck and bbq pork) meat combination and 3 BBQ (roast duck , bbq pork and soy chicken) meat combination in noodles soup. The portion served is quite generous and the soup is quite tasty. The dinner cost was only $24 so it’s pretty good value.

I’ve always been attracted to the hanging bbq Meats at the front of the restaurant window so decided to finally try this place. I ordered the mixed bbq meat with dry egg noodles. And my bf ordered mixed meat with rice. I enjoyed the flavours of my dish however I could not eat the greens as they weren’t washed properly and were visibly dirty.

My bf commented on how the duck pieces on his plate were mostly bones and didn’t have enough meat, as if they’ve given him leftover pieces of duck.

We also didn’t want to drink the tea provided as the plastic containers they were in looked old and dusty/dirty at the snout.

Positives- good flavours if you don’t mind their standards of cleanliness. Lots to chose from on their menu and the staff speaks English it’s easy to order.

Came here many times before. Food is cheap and portion size is big. Taste is ok depending on which dish. They give you free soup at the beginning and some time they give you sweet bean dessert at the end too.
Service is not so good but not to the point I would say it's bad. 😀
Dolly Kola
Food is delicious and prices are reasonable. Their service is okay. Love their BBQ Pork, BBQ Duck and Crispy Pork!! Yummy!! We will sure be their regular customers! : )
Lam Lam
Yummy food with reasonable value and everyone have free soup if you order a rice or fried noodle!

I still prefer BBQ duck and roast pork there , it is the best in Melbourne. I definitely come in often .

My favourite food "roast duck on rice ",only $10 with free soup!!can't expect more ,quick food to eat and feed your stomach ! Combination with crispy noodle is my favourite too

Had a really great time with my family at Hkbbq last Thursday. The Peking duck was definitely the most authentic in Melbourne😻 highly recommend!!!

We were in the Footscray area however didn't want to have Vietnamese food so we randomly decided on this restaurant. My friend and I shared the roast duck and pork and vegetables. Food was average and was definitely too oily.

Taste 2.5/5
Service 1/5 👎
Came here just before lunch time on Father's day, and ordered fried rice, crispy noodle with pork slices, salt and pepper squid, and combination of bbq pork and crispy skin pork.
The taste itself wasn't totally bad, but definitely didn't hit the good mark too.
Fried rice and bbq pork was okay, the crispy noodle was unappealing and bland, the squid was rubbery, the only good thing was the crispy skin pork. Even though the pork had a thick fat, they managed to kept the skin crispy.
The dine in experience was not a delight to us or anyone who wanted to enjoy their fathers day.
When we went in, they were nice showing us where to sit, took order and gave us a complimentary soup. But then by the time we started to eat, quite a few people turned up and queue.
Then the drama unfolds. The staffs started to cleared our table. No more smile, no sorry, they put another set of plates/chopsticks ready for the next customer on our table. Didn't say anything rude, but the way they stared at us enough to made us wanted to leave.
Customer's satisfaction definitely not on their list.

Been coming here for a while, consistency is weak with this one. Some days food is great other days it feels like they just got it out of the freezer and microwaved it. Just another restaurant to satisfy your hunger, don't sit down thinking your going to be spoiled by the flavours of the food.

Rice dishes are the way to go, duck dishes are legit tasty and yummy. Pork dishes are great as well.

Customer service is fine, double check the bill, always.

This is a part of Melbourne that I had not been too before, and with such a large number of locations to choose from, left out selection of restaurant and meals up to them. I found HKBBQ to be filled with locals and frantically paced which is generally a good sign. The service was efficient, but is really geared towards turning tables over as quickly as possible. We each had a selection of BBQ pork, beef and spicy sausage on rise which was fine for the price, but I suspect that HKBBQ would be average for the area, and I'll be exploring the competition when next in the area.
RoamingEats
One of the worse picks in Footscray. My roast duck with flat rice noodles in soup had no duck flavour at all. Soup was also tasteless. The noodles were hard and powdery, definitely the dried variety which is unforgivable given the abundance of Asian grocers on their doorstep selling fresh noodles. My friend's Singaporean vermicelli looked miserable on the plate and tasted below average. A very bad representation of BBQ restaurants in Hong Kong.

We keep finding ourselves here on weekend for breakfast when all the other restaurants are yet to open. I love ordering up a feast and devouring it in an empty restaurant except for the table of staff having their communal pre service meal.
Our go to is the crispy fried egg noodle with shredded pork and the mixed meat on rice, everything else is just bonus!
Renae Lagowski
Always greeted nicely.. fast service... free tea... good prices o love the bbq meat rice and the food is soooooooooooooo good.. go there u won't be disappointed xx

When we found a worm, YES A WORM in our rice, we tried to raise this issue with the waiter. We received the most outrageous response, and were told “this is normal” and asked “what do you want me to do about it?” No offer to change the rice nor any other remedy.
Absolutely appalling service and complete lack of care, both in terms of food safety and customer satisfaction. They even tried to bill us for the rice! What a complete and utter disgrace to Chinese food.
Julian
Customer service is very rude to non-existent.

The food itself are small portions although similar to any other Chinese restaurant. Better stay with the safe options such as Gold Leaf.
Sylvia's POV
HK BBQ Restaurant serves delicious meals at reasonable prices. The three dishes we ordered were prepared and served promptly. Complementary dessert (sweet red bean soup) was also offered.
Rob
If you value your life, DON'T come here. And don't be fooled by the pictures. I didn't even finish a quarter of my meal it was so bad.

First, they charged me more than the price on the menu. And when I pointed it out they said that the price had increased and that was that. I excused that on the basis that they might be rude, but maybe their food is good. WRONG! They served me what looked like a really large portion of chicken, but every part of it had large amounts of bone and fat attached to it. Hardly any of it was actually edible. Also, I felt like I could find myself choking at any point if I continued due to all the bone fragments. In addition, the chicken was both warm AND cold at the same time! It had been incorrectly heated.

I have no idea how this place has so many good reviews. My experience was terrible. Do yourself a favour and don't come here. There are too many other good places in footscray to bother with this place.
Katherine Chiu
Hong Kong BBQ restaurant is in Footscray and I have heard good things from the Escort and the Thief. We went there for lunch one day.We got the complimentary soup and tea. This was a nice touch. The other table had the deep fried calamari with pepper and it looked really nice. The duck hanging near the door looked really nice and that enticed people to go in.

A random pick from zomato for dinner after a day out pokemon hunting and it was not a bad choice at all. We ordered their roast dish with a combination of roast duck and roast pork as well as bok choy and mushroom. The food was good but a bit on the oily side. In terms of the flavour, I think I still prefer those from Pacific House.
Alan Giang
Food was okay but some dishes were extremely salty. The main let downs are the service/waiters and cramped dining area.

Dishes came out quickly and they had flavour but the dishes such as the chicken fried rice had excessive sodium. The service was so so. My friend was getting some food from the middle of the table and the waiter just turned the rotating table top without caring. There was still food on the dish and the waiters just took it away without asking whether we were finished yet. The way the waiters treated us was disrespectful. It seemed as though they did not care and their attitude was as if they did not want to work there. We asked for water and the waiter gave us a pissed off look.

The tables in the restaurant are wobbly causing food to be unstable on the table. The amount of space between tables is absolutely ridiculous. There is hardly enough space for a toddler to walk through let along a waiter or a diner. The toilets were also cramped and they were located next to the kitchen.

No TVs or music and the decor was out dated and lacking.

Overall the downsides are the way in which customers are treated and the cramped restaurant. Take-away would be an okay option.

Not recommended to have a large family gathering here due to the lack of space.
Maidstone Yana
We like their BBQ pork the most. The meat was so tasty and juicy.

Sometimes we went there for lobster and mud crab, which were never disappointing.

Lunch time special menu was good too.

After a long time (6 years gap), been back to the restaurant. I want my wife to try the steamed fish and steamed rice. Its one of the specialities of the chef at this restaurant. For entry, we tried the Hot and Sour soup. It was so delicious. I think it's one the best soup we had recently. While the fish was steaming, we had Spring rolls and Chinese broccoli. They were normal. But, the steamed fish with steamed rice was so delicious. We loved it. It brought back the memories of this restaurant. I would recommend people to check this place out.
Isle
Maybe I got them on their off day, since reviews are okay? I doubt it. A couple manning the front were yelling at each other while I try to put in my order. No eye contact whatsoever. Rude as. The bbq chicken wings did not taste fresh while the charsiu pork was dry and looked grey. I do not understand the hype. Not going there again. I rather go across the road at Master Restaurant. Unfortunately Master's not in Zomato.
Kylie Davies
Another regular restaurant we keep going back to because the bbq pork is just so good! It's also good value too, at $10 for a full size takeaway container. Another favourite is Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce.

Interior could do with a makeover although there is nothing wrong with old school.

Staff are very friendly and willing to please.

No plastic accepted, it is cash only.
Our Foodie Finds
Very popular amongst Footscray locals probably because of HKBBQ's juicy, fresh, delicious and tasty produce and ingredients. We usually go on a hunt for delicious combination of mixed roast $10.5 consisting of crispy pork bbq and duck on ride or egg noodle and HKBBQ produces quality with flying flavours. We musnt forget the usual accompaniment of Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce $14.8 and a standard coconut juice $3.0 to wash it all down.

Decor is standard old school & nothing fancy, the service is pretty quick and has a high turn over especially during busy periods so if you're going to give this place a go, get in early. Till next time, this is Our Foodie Find!
My Babes And I
My babes and I tend to eat dinner at Footscray every once and a while, especially when we're eating out with her family for Viet food. One night, when neither of us felt like eating Viet food, we decided to try a Chinese restaurant for date night dinner that we don't eat at often called Hong Kong BBQ Restaurant.
My babes told me that her family used to go here regularly a few years back but they haven't returned lately and me and my mates used to take away the roast pork or duck every once and a while. From our previous experiences, we both knew the quality of food to expect but we just hoped it was as good as we remembered.
After going through the vast menu, I ordered the Mixed Roast (2 Kinds) On Rice, my babes ordered the BBQ Pork With Noodles and a Szechuan Hot & Sour Soup and we shared a plate of Deep Fried Calamari With Spicy Salt & Chilli.
All our main dishes were served within 5 minutes of ordering along with a couple of complementary bowls of soup. The soup, which comprised of boiled veges (including carrot and onions) in a light brown broth that I assumed to be pork based, was delicious to me but my babes didn't like it so I had hers as well.
My main meal, which is a roasted chicken thigh and roast pork served on a large bed of steamed white rice garnished with steamed Bok Choi, is a very simple dish that I could never get sick of! The roast pork was perfectly cooked with an incredibly crunchy skin and the meat being very tender. The chicken was good but could've been cooked a tad longer as the meat was a little pink close to the bone and I would've preferred a more flavourful marinade.
My babes BBQ pork, or Char Siu, was placed on top of a plate full of egg noodles again garnished with Bok Choi. The pork was delicious as the meat was moist and the marinade had just a hint of sweetness to balance out the saltiness. My babes really enjoyed it and so did I.
We probably didn't need the Deep Fried Calamari With Spicy Salt & Chilli as we were starting to get really full by our main meals. Although the deep fried calamari was cooked well, I was surprised that I didn't find it spicy at all especially with the amount of chilli sprinkled on top.
My babes Szechuan Hot & Sour Soup was served a few more minutes after our main meals. I don't understand what my babes enjoys about the chilli and vinegar based soup, which contains tofu, mushrooms and unidentifiable traces of meat, but I personally can't stomach more than one spoonful of the stuff. My babes said that this was one of the best that she's had lately.
If you like roasted and Chinese style barbecue pork around Footscray without having to wait long after ordering, I would recommend trying Hong Kong BBQ Restaurant. You get great value for money as the serving sizes are quite large and mostly quality roasted meat for what you pay for. The only downsides for me is that it is always busy so you may need to wait for a table during dinner times and the waiting staff could be a little hard to understand if you don't speak Cantonese or Vietnamese. Still worth a try, even for take away, if you haven't had their crispy skin roasted pork before.
FOOD TRIP
Hard to pick out tender snow pea sprouts to cook at home, so great dish to order at the restaurant. Requested this one not to be too oily, so it came out really well. 7/10. Mud Crab (market price). with Ginger and Spring Onion. extra noodles $5. Fresh and meaty crab. Great sauce and egg noodles are essential. 8/10
Nick
Came here this morning after I finished doing my shopping an i gotta say the food at this place is so delicious. I will definitely be back again next week
Hello. Imnikki
We come here more for the convenience than for the quality of the food. The roasts are pretty ordinary, nothing too spectacular. The lamb in clay pot, when ordered during winter time, is a lifesaver. A huge clay pot of simmering soup filled with enough lamb and veggies to feed at least two is the perfect dish to warm up in winter. Don't try this in summer though, you will most likely end up with a heatstroke. The complimentary soup and desserts are a nice touch and so are the aunties working there who sometimes fret over you like a mother hen. On bad days, they will forget about your existence and it becomes quite a chore to flag them down. And if you come nearing closing time, the serves of roast do magically become bigger.
POC
Service is appalling. Roast duck is always good, can't say same about their chicken. Fortunately for us mother duckers they're not the only sheriff in town. Nearby rival Golden Harvest gaining ground faster than hipsters at Laneway festival.

Nice little place - bustling and busy. I tried the eggplant hotpot - beautifully cooked and prepared eggplant, what more could you want. My friend ordered the salt and pepper calamari - also looked (and tasted) very nice. Typical setup with booths on the side and tables in the centre, the atmosphere was great and the selection on the menu extensive. Friendly staff too and affordable for amount of food :)

No fuss Chinese food. Tasty, cheap, quick service. The kind of food I like to eat when I'm craving salt and oily goodness. Not the cleanest place but much better than many alternatives on the strip.

I can vouch for the fried rice and peking duck pancakes, mmm mm good.
Cellie
This restaurant is one of my all time favourites! The price is very reasonable and the food is extraordinary.By saying that, the Peking duck is roasted by themselves..Fresh! I would recommend this restaurant if you'd like to eat Chinese cuisine!

Remember growing up in HongKong, Wonton noodles soup or bbq pork/ roast duck rice was my weekly MUST have dishes. Since I am homesick and actual sick today . I have decided to come in to HK BBQ for some food heeling.
I normally come here for bbq pork / red sausage or roast duck to take away .It's so easy and it's affordable for your lazy dinner plan . You could always cook your own rice at home . And it tastes amazingly good .
Today I was looking forward for some authentic HK wonton noodles soup and some bbq chicken wings . I couldn't describe to you how excited I was .5 mins ,10 mins ,15 mins after ,they delivered to my table . It looked delish and amazing . However the taste of it does not match the look . Once again (remember you could never judge people by their cover .)
Broth was really bland and tasteless , I had to put good amount of vinegar and chilli sauce and still doesn't taste half decent .
Unfortunately Wonton skin was really thick. Filling were dry and noodles were all glued together .
I have never tasted any wonton noodles soup like this before .
Now I thought you can't go through with chicken wings and chicken wings is my favourite food out of all time . I AM IN LOVE WITH MY CHICKEN WINGS . So as I was being positive and try to put a smile and hoping the best . Bommmm . Chicken wings were sooooo dry . So you know what . Being a kid that doesn't like to waste any food . I have decided to take them away and perhaps I can recreate a better version at home lol.
Guys in saying that . I will still go there every week for my bbq pork or roast duck without a fail :)
Grace
I love a simple meal here of BBQ meats, steamed vegetables and rice. My favourite from this restaurant is the Taiwanese sausage! That's my go to meal. I do quite a bit of takeaway meats too!
Pamela Steward
food was spectacular. that chili chicken glass noodles are such a crave. place is not good for kids in prams but the food is worth the buck. definitely going back for more

Where else can you go and have a delicious Chinese meal, feed a family of 6-8 for under $100 including drinks? This place never disappoints! Bbq meat in point all the time! 2meat on rice with bokchoy for $10 now that's value for the $$
Yeah sometimes there is a bit of a language barrier but there are other waitresses that can speak well! Salt n pepper chicken yum!
Helenaconia
Probably the best roasted duck in town even the consistency of duck skin crispiness still lack. The place is sloppy, sometimes the owner walking back and forth near us to 'make sure' we eat our food chop chop. but still, the champion of roasted duck all over the town.

Solid Hong Kong barbecue fare in the heart of Footscray. Will get the prawn dumplings noodle soup or char siew on rice. Terrific for a change from the great Vietnamese cuisine around.

Dinner here on Friday night. Place was full but service quick. Possibly the best (cheap) Chinese I've had. Chilli calamari the stand out. Waited on by lovely old ladies.
Shanton
Being one of only 2 places in Footscray that serves this style of cuisine, it runs the risk of being complacent in terms of food quality and standard but this is not the case here. The good is pretty authentic Hong Kong style and yummilicious. The service is variable as usual but it is still better than most in the city. All in all, I am looking forward to my next visit!

The roast meats arrived first – not the soups – and as hunger was paramount we didn’t even notice at first.

I love this place. $9 for meat on rice with a side of steamed choy sum. It's fresh so you can't go wrong. I think the ladies who wait here are very nice. I dined here late Saturday night & the two things I normally like - chicken Maryland in sweet soy & roasted char siu pork were sold out. Though there was a language barrier the staff lady talked me through what I could still get & the pork belly meal I ordered on her recommendation was delish. Look... You'll probably get asked for money by one of the locals who loiter outside the restaurant. Whatever. This place will probably never be short listed for outstanding customer service or for it cleanliness... But the cutlery & plates are clean & dinner with a drink is under $12. I'll never cook meat like this ever. So in my opinion this is a great night out. Worth the trip into footscray.

Abit overrated.. After hearing the hype of another restaurant established by the owner of chin chin. Decided to try various foods that jap/korean fusion food had to offer. Sadly, it really didnt hit home. Soft shell crab were great, roti roll were good, chicken was okay and BBQ meat tray was terrible. Given this restaurant is a Bbq place, the meat was dry/overcooked and just plain salty. I recommend going to chin chin instead, rather kong as i found it a hit and miss. More misses than hits.

Favourite Chinese Roast Pork. We visit here for a variety of dishes, from their roast pork, roast duck to crab in ginger and spring onion sauce. Always great food, sometimes great service.

Edit: really hated our meal last night...

Cheap and delicious roast. I often come here to pick up braised offal which my dad seemingly enjoys.

I have been to the restaurant number of times, loved the food especially the roast duck. HOWEVER, they need to work on their services. There is an old lady that rudely drops the plate in front of you on the table, also she takes the plate away when I haven't even finished yet. Overall, good food but bad services .
Christine
Definitely coming back!. Great service, ordered take away, staff made sure we were looked after!
The food was great and the duck had plenty of meat on it!
Very happy :)

This joint is famous for roast pork and duck. I am impressed by the consistency of food quality. Chef's recommendations such as beef ribs pepper sauce , ginger spring onion sliced fish below $ 19 are good values to go with red wine/beer.

Nothing to shout about. Just another Chinese restaurant that serves reasonable quality food and fair priced. Their fried rice has its ups and down. You are asked politely to leave once you have finished your food and the place is busy..

Why I live in Melbournes western suburbs. Hong Kong barbecue is one of the reasons I love living in Melbournes inner west. It exemplifies the authentic asian / amazing value , extraordinary food , duck that is rich ,tasty ,fatty and awesome , salt pepper sqid I would sell my soul to the devil for . Barbecue pork that is lush ,moist and full flavoured . I love the faulty towers style service , the endless green tea pot. The takeaway is so good you will probably finish it before getting home. A word of warning always buy twice what you think you might want if you are getting take away as the family at home will have to get pizza . I remember eating the lot and telling them it I couldn't get a park . I have been a loyal Hong Kong barbecue customer for over ten years and have NEver had any thing but pure delight and utter pleasure . This is an institution ,this is where the locals go . Always busy ,always full ,you don't go there for the service or the decor or English lessons you go there for the sublime food.

Will never come back again. The staff are rude.

Worst experience ever. Went there in the morning and ordered a takeaway crispy pork and bbq pork. went home and opened it and it was disgusting. dried and chewy porks. seems like they reheated the left overs from last night. never again !!

Service is bad. This restaurant used to be good but it's gone down the drain. Was there last night and there were 5 empty tables. The lady at the counter had me share a small table with someone else I didn't know. I reckon they were too lazy to clean the table as the cutlery were already laid out. Found it difficult to enjoy my food when facing someone I don't know and eating noisily in front of my face.

Tip: Don't go there if you are having a meal alone

Really excellent low-cost authentic HK Chinese restaurant - staff smiling and helpful, food fast, hot and fresh. Recommended.

Want great BBQ? It's easy.... Want great BBQ?

It's easy, head on in to Hong Kong BBQ. It's cheap and super tasty.

Just Keep Coming Back. Very hard to not go in when I travel past this place daily.
Difficult to understand the issue others have had with service. One must remember for the price they are paying they should not expect to receive Fine Dining Service. The ladies that work here are lovely always helpful and willing to answer questions.

Now for what we all want to hear about the food. Favourites include Roast Duck, Sweet Roast Pork, Chefs Recommended Fried Chicken are the staple when I visit. Have had fish and crab here more recently and been very impressed. The salt and pepper white bait was amazing. Look there are two many dishes on the menu to rate them all here and now but this place is definitely worth a visit for the food.

Great place! Really friendly, will go back for sure!

Good food at good prices, have been a few times and always have had good customer service.

It's not about the service. Ok, so people here comment on the service and how bad it is but for me you need to act like a Chinese in order to understand how they serve you. When I want to order I put my hand up like in the classroom, I point to what I want and I'm done...I'm less fussed about the service and more concerned about the food, which for me, is always top notch! I've never had a bad meal it's probably one of the best duck eateries around. If you can look past the service then this is the place for fine roast/BBQ duck/pork.

This haunt is a footscray institution for a reason ... Fantastic and consistent Chinese BBQ! The mixed bbq dish with roast duck and pork are the best you will find in Footscray, be sure to try it. The duck is moist and flavoursome and the roast pork with crackling is moreish. It's very well priced and the service is always efficient and friendly. This is the go to place for Asian BBQ hands down.

Flavour. Ordered the Dim sims which had fantastic flavours. Deep fried squid tentacles were tender. Seafood soup had a great deal of flavour. The chillies were HOT HOT.. Great place. will be back there again.

Not bad at all. It's me and my partner's go to place at least a couple times a month. We love the duck and salt & pepper chicken. We like how there's always complementary soup before we even start ordering as well. If only they have dessert as well! :)
Celia

Not Bad. Had dinner take away style last night.
Pepper Beef was so nice, the wonton soup was delis.
Peeking Duck was so succulent & Tender andi also brought a kilo of the Hanging BBQ pork in the window, just the best, i will have this for lunch with jasmine rice through the week for work.
The food is more traditional rather then westernised at the little "Barkley Street Gem".
There was a lot of research that went into the right place to get take away from for us and friends coming over last night. Nobody was disappointed and we are all a little fussy with our food.
Happy eating
2 Little Pigs
Good enough. Food here is good but nothing outstanding. No complaints from us.

I really can't understand the reviews. And I can't understand why restaurants have a million different dishes on the menu. Our food was bland. Peking duck was predominantly skin, bones n fat. Other dishes too simple n dull. For 15 bucks there r plenty of restaurants who actually can serve very good quality dishes

Ducking awesome!. The juicy flavorsome & succulent Peking duck is nothing short of ducking awesome - especially for the price. Others to try include the Shredded Duck & Jellyfish Salad or the Mixed Roasts (meat x3) with rice and any of their Szechuan dishes (we had chicken & prawn). The staff may not be the friendliest at times - though the young lady at the register is always nice. The place does fill fairly quickly and the surroundings may be a little off-putting but hang in there because the meats on offer are worth it!
