Review Konjo Ethiopian Restaurant - Footscray

Divine Daguasi
A wonderful, authentic Ethiopian dining experience when visiting Footscray. I loved the presentation of the food and how the staff recommended which ones we should try, considering it was my first time to eat an African food. The traditional coffee is a must try, too. Thank you for the complimentary tea before the meal. We enjoyed the food that we visited twice❤️

The vegan platter for two was amazing and such good value. The owner is a really lovely guy as well, had a great chat with him about food afterwards. Great experience.

Fantastic place and experience. We decided to try a bit of everything and got the half-half with beef tibs and kitfo as well as the beyeinatu combo of 5 vegetarian dishes. Spicy tea was perfect to warm up during these wintery months. Would recommend for going with a friend or in a large group!

Konjo never disappoints. They are always friendly and warm. The food is what you would expect from a restaurant: flavourful, warming, fresh. Always get the set, it's more than enough for sharing with another. I tend to order extra injera too :P

A lovely lunch experience sampling authentic Ethiopian cuisine. See photos below. The previous time we tried was many years in Abu Dhabi!

Really delicious food and plenty of Ethiopian collectables to look around while you eat. Pricing is also quite reasonable for the area

This place is very unique and humble. One might almost feel like they are in someone's house eating a traditional meal with a welcoming African family. The vegetarian platter is amazing, but, watch out for those spicy beans. :-)

I brought a group of friends here for a celebratory dinner and we LOVED it. The staff were so welcoming, happy to make recommendations, and offered us a beautiful coffee ceremony afterwards. The food was incredible, generous serves - you can't go past the platter option, everything is delicious, and perfect for sharing. <3

The special breakfast dishes – spicy broad bean stew ("ful") and dry-scrambled eggs ("silts"), each served with crusty bread rolls – are absolutely delicious. The traditional coffee takes a while but is totally worth it. This place is my favourite ever breakfast café.

Ok so it was my last night in Melbourne sadly... but i thought i got to go somewhere inviting and a bit out of the ordinary :)!! Walked past this fine Ethiopian place a good 4 - 5 times cause its at the very start of Smith street and i was staying in East Melbourne :). Everytime i did walk past there was always people outside having a laugh, chat & smoking one of the same looking pipes you see at some Lebanese Restaurants :). One of my best friends at work who is Ethiopian always talks up how good his food is but always continues to say that the Restaurants in Australia don't make it the same way like back home.. Ive been to excited to taste Ethiopian and i was way to hungry to think twice about it lol!! My last night was a wensday, we got there at about 8pm, not to many people inside but thats expected for a mid week dinner :)! Every Ethiopian I've ever met have been super humble & very friendly, the owner was nothing shy of what i just said which is always more settling :D!! Sat us down quickly and gave us some complementary warm tea while we were gazing through the menu. The tea as sweet & tasted Gingery .. was like sir we need another round of this tea lol!! I was lost what to get so i called my work friend and he gave me a few must try meals :)! We got the Doro Wot & Beyeinatu combo on a big Injera, told him me and my cousin were big eaters & he told us not to worry :)!! Doro wot was chicken marinated with lemon & onion and was in like a broth almost & was served with Injera which is best described as flat, sour, pancake like bread, the combo we had was 5 vegie portions of red & green lentils, yellow split peas & then 2 buddles of veg goodness simmered with onions/garlic & was served on an oversized Injera. I'm not gonna lie but at first sight i was like we should of ordered more.. began to eat while looking at the Menu again but after half way i was like maybe i should order some more after i finish... we just finished it!! Scissor, paper, rocked it for the last mouthful cause we were both stuffed lol!! It all tasted super great & all up with a cider & a soft drink it was just over $50 :D!! The owner was telling me he's a proud family man & runs another restaurant by the same name in Footscray that is open in the morning & closes in the later afternoon & he then opens his Collingwood restaurant for dinner :) Was impressed with the hospitally & the tasty food so will definately hit up footscray next time & got to try the Ethiopian coffee which I've heard is hard hitting just the way i like it :D!!!
