Nice local pub with consistently good food. The space has a nice relaxed feel about it with the indoor pub area keeping its old school charm despite a revamp. Very good vegetarian options.
Recently returned to this place after coming not long after refurb. Group of 8 or so and food was great. Had the Triple Cheeseburger and it was delicious. Everyone on our table was happy with their food. Good selection of tap beers and lots of tv’s all showing the footy if you’re interested. Will definitely be back.
4.5
There is a bit of a contradiction here.
Good tap beers and decent wines however whilst the Victoria is a "Pub" the food is far and above what one would expect.Thoughtful menu and good restaurant quality dishes at very affordable prices.Service is always prompt and attentive even at the busiest of times.
Acoustics need a bit of attention. Damn noisy!
Had the pork dining experience and it was unbelievable. Hats off to @anthony.hammond.773, chef @jamescornwallfrosty and wineguru @cambell.burton.3.
I know Melbourne always creates a new experience and this has to sit right at the top.
Value for this type of meal was exceptional
Staff are on the ball, and the triple cooked fries keep everyone happy. Food is really good - even better than it sounds on the menu. Might seem a little expensive, but the price is soon forgotten once the food is in your belly.
Wheelchair accessible from the rear entrance. Accessible bathroom available. Access to all areas of the bar despite there being steps throughout.
Close proximity to public transport so great for big nights.
New ownership and the food is great! We went on a Friday night with 4 wheelchairs, no booking and reviewed excellent care.
Great venue to watch sports or dine in the bistro. We'll be back!
Visited “the old Hart’s” earlier this week with a couple of colleagues. Had been wanting to since it reopened following renos and despite some lukewarm reviews on Zomato. It was Tuesday and it was doing a good trade we thought as we had a beer at the oval bar. On being seated at our table we discovered it was curry night (No advertising to alert us) so two of us gave that a crack. At $18 we thought it was great value. And it was! A really enjoyable well made curry (choice of fish and vege curries).
By this time no tables and people waiting. Seems word of mouth is working in their favour. We will be back, maybe there are other themed nights to experience.
A worthy addition to Victoria St and competition for the Plough just up the road.
Came in a few weeks back to watch the footy with my partner and was really pleasantly surprised! Bar staff were friendly and helpful, and the Sunday roast (pork) was the best I’ve ever had - melt in your mouth pork and great roast potatoes with other veggies on the side. Very chill atmosphere and speedy service, major plus was how clean everything was and their capacity to cater for me as a coeliac. Definitely coming back regularly to watch the game and have a great meal!
I came here on a Saturday for lunch and a drink. The place has a really relaxed vibe, great food, friendly staff and a good range of local beers along with the usual favourites. Highly recommend this place, particularly for pre or post-footy catch up as the Footscray oval is a short walk away.

Visited on a Tuesday night. Quiet bar but busy restaurant. Delicious food, quick service. My favourite was the special - barramundi collars. Will definitely be back!
Been twice now in the last few weeks. Service has been friendly and welcoming both times which is a plus. Pleasant atmosphere too and very family friendly. However, the food at the moment is nothing more than alright. So far, I have tried the duck, the steak and the mussels. Mussels were good, but the main courses of the duck and the steak were decent only. For what you are getting food-wise, I think the prices are about 10% too high and the portions a tad small.
Really impressed. I went on a Tuesday night; there was a good atmosphere inside, however it wasn't too noisy. After we found a comfy booth, I ordered the mackerel which was delicious and the wine was very nice too. My friend was also very happy with her duck confit. I'll definitely return.
Keen to try the refurbished version of an old Footscray pub in early December. A little bit disappointed with the fit out but it was a relaxed atmosphere. Food was good but unfortunately, unless your happy to pay $60 for a bottle of wine they will only serve 2 sparklings, 1 white and 1 red by the glass. Too bad if don't fancy their by the glass choice. A little arrogant ?? Sticking with the Plough.
Decided to suss out the recently refurbished Victoria Hotel, formerly Harts.
The menu is classic pub food but with a creative twist - and not overly expensive.
Had the Sydney rock oysters, the caviar and jalapeño vinaigrette thingo on them was delicious. The kind of tasty stuff normally reserved for places like Marion in Fitzroy, or places with a decent chef.
Ordered the 250g steak, which came with chips and salad. The sauce/gravy options were anchovy butter or bone marrow sauce - I went with the bone marrow sauce and it was great. All this for $32 bucks.
My dining partner went with the roast cauliflower and lentil tandoori dish. Once again, the same sort of presentation you’d get at a fancy wine bar or restaurant, and just as tasty.
Had all your craft beers and a few classics too.
The ambience is perfect, low lit and relaxed. And they haven’t overdone the fit out, it’s stripped back and simple inside. Sonic Youth and Joy Division playing in the background helped the vibe too.
Footscray purists and originals who oppose gentrification may turn up their nose - but it’s a welcome addition to the area.
It’ll be my new local, very impressed.
I love the feel of this pub, with the old timber floors and original fixtures. The parmas are good value and there are heaps of interesting combinations to try if you can summon your second stomach to open! For others will smaller appetites, like me, they also offer half parmas. The venue is pretty accommodating for large groups and there always seems to be room
The Parma here is massive and is amazing lovely staff on the ball and always paying attention to customers and looking after them. Every thing is very cheap but is amazing. Best pub ever!!!!
Old school, down to earth no nonsense pub. Good meals, generous portions and Staff that are happy to pour you a beer. A local spot for the wife and I when we just want a easy meal without having to go to too much effort
Came here on Wednesday for the special Parma night with Elisha Hodges and Isabella Pearman. The pub itself has a lot of character and is never really busy so booking a table isn't really necessary. The staff are very laid back and some can be very unfriendly. I don't like how the cutlery has to be collected yourself and how your order has to be given at the bar. As the pub hasn't been busy the times I have been I feel as though they could improve service by having staff taking orders and setting the tables prior to people coming in. The full parmas are big but not very thick, although they are a struggle to finish. They are tasty but if you are looking for a good quality Parma this isn't the right place you are looking for. The chips are fat but under seasoned and the salad is fresh which has a nice flavoured dressing on top. I find that the half parmas are the perfect size as I usually don't find myself wasting much of it at the end. They offer various different flavours that the parmas can be topped with like Mexican, tropical, Italian, and Aussie. Cheap prices and a good big meal. Will keep coming back to enjoy these parmas!
Realising that this is a pub I will try not to be too harsh. Went for lunch as a team so we pre-booked and pre-ordered.
As usual something was forgotten with one of us having to wait over 20 minutes before being told that the counter staff wrote down the order wrong and hence one of us was missing our meal.
We were served smaller dinner rolls with butter (complimentary) which is nice.
The beetroot and goats cheese salad was very underwhelming. It was drowned in oil which made it difficult to eat, couldn’t taste the lemon juice that was also meant to be part of the dressing.
They used to do full size and half size chicken parmas with chips. They've done away with the full size parma as they said most people wouldn't finish it. Despite this, the price is still the same... Disappointing.
Classic pub feel & atmosphere, plenty of dining space and it looks clean for a pub so all in all, not bad.
When was the last time you got complimentary bread rolls with butter with your meal? Been a while I bet. Well, at harts this is a non negotiable. This old school pub serves a great steak and Parma ( be warned though, this bad boy is huge) in a family friendly setting. The vibe is relaxed and the food is of a good quality without breaking the bank - $25 a steak and $20 for a Parma. The setting is nice but is unmistakably pub like.. One of my local favourites!
The service here is incredible, and the kitchen is consistently serving up delicious meal after delicious meal. Legit 'pub grub', and great pricing!
Great feed here. Giant schnitzels, delicious steak and good service. Expect to leave with leftovers or a belly that is close to exploding with the amount of food eaten.
Wow, moved to Seddon just over a year ago and have finally found our local. Am defiantly a bit of a snobby foody, but all I can say is , YAY!! Finally great old style pub food that is beautiful, simple homemade and honest! Keep up the good work guys!
The food here is outstanding to say the least. Massive sized meals ( no jokes i mean friggin huge sizes ) and low cost too. Very comfortable place to eat.
Then they had a band on ( Saturday night entertainment ) called FACEPLANT and they where off the hook!!! Wicked as cover band.
Great food
Great band
Great night.
Then i got paralytic and Faceplanted on the footpath .... how ironic!!😲
Great place. Great value. Fantastic local. 😃
Despite having lived around the corner we'd never had dinner at Harts, but on a cold Friday evening we decided to give it a try rather than take a longer walk. In the bistro section wood features heavily in the décor, which has a familiar traditional feel. The walls are adorned with historic images of Footscray including this selection of the Doggies and the Whitten Oval.
Parma is absolutely huge wasn't expecting it to be that big, even though it was delicious perfect seasonings on the chicken and good amount of cheese and sauce all round. The chicken is nice and thin and will definitely be my go to Parma. Service was great and nice old school atmosphere. Muzzy
My first pub meal couldn't of been anywhere more perfect. As a native to rainy Seattle (USA) I can't say I've had too many pub meals (none to be exact), so I wasn't quite sure what to expect when we walked into Harts Hotel. My partner and his friends had to explain at hotel pubs are something special here in Australia, and you can find some of the best true aussie dishes in them. My first impression of Harts was it looked rather old, however the atmosphere inside was something completely different. Lots of laughing and smiles from both staff and customers in the bar and restaurant, and the smells from the kitchen were off the hook. Lots of historic pictures and football memorabilia lined the walls, which made the pub feel really real. No 'Outback Steakhouse' vibes here. The chicken parma (or half parma if you're not keen enough) seemed to be the big favourite in our group. I can't say in all my travels, I've ever seen a piece of chicken that big before. Kudos to the brave souls who take on that big dish. Myself a vegan, thoroughly enjoyed the pub style veggie burger and 'chips' (fries?) seriously yum. The pub food, atmosphere, scenery, and staff made my first experience at the Harts Hotel one to remember, and I've been back a few times since!
Stumbled across this gem when hoping off the train one day and decided to venture inside, now I'm a regular diner here and have never been let down. The beer is ice cold, staff is accommodating and the food is delicious.
I usually get the parma, which along with a few friends attempt as a challenge - the thing is HUGE and delicious! Also can't go past the Chicken Schnitzel burger. The food quality is what you would expect for your old local, but the prices are more than affordable! Will be back, as usual!
Parmasofmelbourne. Parma night arrived and it was time to choose our parma location for this week. Throughout the week we had been recommended by a few people to give the Victoria Harts Hotel in Footscray a try so off we went.
Walking into this pub makes you feel right at home. A perfect example of a true blue Aussie pub. We were absolutely loving it already.
After about 30 minutes, our parmas arrived.
One word, wow. These birds were big. Probably the biggest we have seen.
Looks wise, they looked absolutely delicious. We dug in. 'Boy oh boy' were we quite surprised. It tasted just as good as it looked.
The chicken was fresh, juicy and big. Wasn’t the thickest we have had but honestly, it was just right. Considering how big the bird was, it didn’t need to be thick at all.
The crumbing was easily the best we have tasted. Infused with herbs; It gave the parma a distinct beautiful taste.
The napoli was fresh and tasty. Spread evenly and just enough.
The cheese was a 3 cheese blend. Something we have noticed is a growing trend with pubs nowadays. The harts hotel pulled it off spectacularly. Had a almost creamy & soft texture to it. It complimented the parma very well to say the least.
The chips were thick cut chips you would normally expect at a pub. Seasoned and cooked perfectly.
The veggies were soft and fresh.
This was definitely one of the best parmas we have had to date. This parma scores points for quality and quantity. Not only was the parma incredible, but the customer service in the place is honestly on another level. Never have we dined at a place and received such warming service all round. So a massive thanks to the two lovely ladies operating the bar for making us feel so welcome.
This parma comes in at a low price of $19 daily. We cannot stress enough how incredible the value is overall. Drop your dinner plans for tonight and head down there. The venue, food and customer service is absolutely impeccable at the harts hotel so hats off to the them. We can guarantee we will be down there on the regular to enjoy a sneaky parma. This place is the definition of a hidden gem.
Victoria Harts Hotel; us at parmasofmelbourne hart you.
9.5/10
Walking into the Harts Vic is like stepping back in time. An extremely spacious public bar greeted us with all the staples of a pub I’d love to call home. Exposed brick, old school wood panelling, so-ugly-its-awesome patterned carpet. It feels like a country pub that hasn’t changed in decades, yet its tucked away in the middle of Footscray.
Unpretentious old school pub, tasty and good value meals. The Victoria Harts is an old school pub next to Middle Footscray train station, catering mostly to locals. It might not be much to look at from the outside, but its bistro serves up some unpretentious and tasty meals in generous sized portions at reasonable prices, all mostly below $20. I had the half chicken parma. What arrived was a well-crumbed and seasoned schnitzel, topped with a mildly piquant tomato passata and oven-grilled cheese with a side of crispy roast potatoes and (admittedly, somewhat mediocre) vegetables. It really hit the spot with a nice cold beer. I also spied some other great -looking dishes like the pork rissoles with gravy and mash which I'd definitely like to try next time. The service was also refreshingly friendly and down to earth (I haven't been called "darl" in years), unlike a lot of so-called "gastropubs" these days.
Great little pub in footscray with simple, good old fashioned food and service! We'll be back!! ;)
You would never expect such a pub to produce such amazing meals! Absolutely chuffed with every dish I've had here. So cheap for the generosity, quality and taste. Never judge a book by its cover. This humble pub is definitely my new local.
This is one of the most honest pubs in Melbourne. Quality food at excellent prices. Family friendly bistro at the back with a proper 'old school' bar at the front. Can't go wrong at this pub.
What a nice surprise. Quite impressive for a local pub. The refurbished decor is consistent with the original style.. The food was great, generous servings, reasonably priced, well presented and tasty...The service was impressive.. The staff were friendly, though our waitress (Rossy) went above and beyond what was expected.. A lovely local pub.. I can see why it's so busy.
Really great good at good pr.... Really great food at good prices.. the bar is still a bit dodgy with all the tab and betting.. they should get rid of the gambling and it would be a much better pub.
Good pub. We had meals from the specials board- $13 parma and $18 lamb shank. Both were really good value, nice meals and huge servings. will be heading back
LOVE LOVE LOVE. Went there last night and it was fantastic, im not really a pub person but i couldn't get enough of this place, friendly staff, amazing food and was so cheap. we only spent just under $50 for all 3 of us and that was including 3 alcohol drinks. This place is differently going to be one of our regular dinner places
New management of the pub moved in a few months ago and I was a little hesitant when I heard 'new chef, new menu'... The old fare was by no means gourmet but it was great pub grub and great value. Yesterday I had a $13 porterhouse special and it was fantastic! Truly! I was at Rockpool last week and the steak wasn't far off. I'm not kidding you. It was cooked to perfection. Veggies in the side were fine and a decent serving of chips. 13 bucks? Can't go wrong! My partner had the bangers and mash and they were great too! Cannot be happier my local, cheap pub grub has not only not lost its small town feel, but now has a cracker new chef!
EDIT: I've been back about 3 times since this review, unfortunately I never got a steak of the same calibre I did the first time... but that said, it was pretty bloody decent pub fare. I'll keep returning (especially for their lunch specials) and will spread the word.
Great Value Pub Meals. Wow What a Gem, Nice Pub Atmosphere, Great Dining Room, the meals ranged from about $8 up, Had the Soup and Garlic Bread @ $6 and there was plenty of it and struggled to get through the Roast @ $12, great Value for Money, plenty of good quality food at a Good Price... Will be back again for sure.
I agree the lamb shanks are delcious and massive only $16 with you choice of salad and chips or veg n the best mash couldn't beat it also there chicken breast supream is Devine chicken breast with bacon mushrooms spring onions ect in nice creamy sauce I think was also $16 and also your choice of sides as 4 the kids meals there spaghetti Bol looks like an adults size my doughter loved it only $6 I recommend it for families the staff there are also really welcoming and friendly :)
Very tasty food. Had Thr best lamb shanks, really really delicious and huge! The portions are massive, could easily be shared between two people! Plus, it's really cheap!
Real Pub Meals. Real pub meals in the city - great steaks, fish and chips, lamb shank, parma's - you name it.
Fantastic prices and fast service.
And then if you still have room for dessert - check out the picture.
Great place if you're looking for something laid back. Where else in Melbourne can you get pub food as quick and as good and as cheap as this. Will be back again and again.
I order the rissoles with mashed potato. The dish comes with a gravy boat so you can decide how much, if any, gravy you want. The rissoles are large, moist and tasty...and filling.
