Review Thanh Vinh - Footscray

Great range of vietnamese chinese cuisines and reasonable prices. Service is friendly and they have outdoor seating. We tried the chicken pho and the broken rice with the lot both are delicious. Definitely back next time in Footscray.

My favourite Vietnamese resto on this street. Staff are lovely and happily made my partner's dish gluten free. Love that they still provide the thermos with hot tea when giving out the menus, and they check everyone's vaccination status. The prices are very reasonable.

I have been a frequent customer for many years, but tonight was the end. A simple regular rice and Mongolian beef....(beef and onions) has gone up to $38.90!! Rediculous. Goodbye forever

Place was nice, clean and tidy, wasn't too crowded when we went for dinner. Service was very nice and friendly. There are sauces on each table (soy/fish sauce, chili, etc). Food was very nice too, the kway teow was very tasty with just the right chewiness on the noodles, and the tomato rice w/ beef cubes also nice, meat was tender.

There is so much on offer in Footscray but you can nearly always be guaranteed of a variety of cuisines to choose from. Tonight I was privileged to join “The Thursday Night Group” (yes I know that’s not very original) but a collection of mates who’ve known each other for decades who meet weekly for a meal. Tonight they chose Thanh Vinh which they’d clearly visited before. A platter of chicken crumbed drumsticks was the perfect way to start and for me to gauge what to order for main course. With around 10 on the plate. They were lightly crumbed with a sprinkling of chilli, onion lightly oiled. Tasty little tenders and the ideal appetiser. For main course, we all ordered something different so there was a selection of meals - sambal chicken, fried rice, sambal squid, beef & vegetables and finally my own honey chicken. All the meals were a generous portion size. Have to say the honey chicken wasn’t overly sweet which is a nice change. A few of the group went for dessert - what’s Vietnamese/Chinese if there isn’t a banana fritter. Took me back to the 70’s. Staff were helpful and glided in and out between the tables with little fuss or distraction to our conversations. Well worth a visit everyone. Give it a go. Note: wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly with high chairs available. Parking can be a challenge so do explore the back streets for better parking than out the front.

Ordered 2x Goat hot pots today. It was one of worst meal ever. It was very salty and the meat was terrible. We are all 6 people cant eat and threw them to the bin. Never ever to order or come there again.Good bye

Came here 1st time with my wife on a Sat nite at 8.50 pm after walking around Footscray & thinking as to what will be open for us to be able to eat! Footscray resto scene sucks for later nite closing which is normally 9 or 9.30 so were shocked when we saw the closing time sign of 10 pm! I repeat 10 pm every nite except Mon as they are closed! We ordered the pho & soft shell crabs & a Viet iced coffee. We sat on a comfy booth & the two viet girls working at the front were offering the nicest most friendliest service i can ever recollect! The pho wasnt as sweet as Huong Vuong but i actually preferred it...as for the soft shell crabs? The best i have ever eaten...period! We have found our new goto place in Footscray & my wife & i are over the moon! Happy eating all.....

New discovery in Footscray. Need to try their speciality which is the Vietnamese tamarind soup (comes with vermicelli) ($16) with prawns or slice of fish (can be bony if u don’t like bones). But the soup was so tasty because it’s sweet and sour with lots of veggies.

First time here for dinner tonight. Food from a very interesting range of choices from the menu was really good & generous servings. Quality & freshness of ingredients was great while seafood dishes had generous quantities of good quality shrimp. Prices very reasonable and excellent service. We will definitely be back!

Had food from here for the first time - chicken lemongrass stir fry and pork spring rolls for takeaway. Both were delicious and the lemongrass chicken was the best that I’ve had - and I’ve tried a many!!
Looking forward to working my way through the menu and dining in when the restrictions lift.

My favourite restaurant in Footscray. The lemongrass chilli stir fry is amazing.

My score 3.5 stars. Possibly the weirdest score averaging I’ve ever done – 1 dish really poor, 1 very average, 1 superb!
J got takeaway dinner from here on Fri 8th May. Lovely service, place was clean but empty (currently a common theme sadly).
Char Kway Teow Seafood ($16.80) – The most boring CKT we've ever had – not very flavoursome at all, minimal ingredients other than the wide noodles (which didn’t travel well). Way overpriced.
Tomato rice w salt and pepper chicken ribs ($13.80) – Tomato rice a bit firm. Ribs ok (5), plenty of meat, but dish just didn’t fly. Nice tomato and cucumber on the side though.
Salt and pepper eggplant ($16.80) – First impression delicious, lasting impression delicious. Quite a generous serve, spicier than the chicken and the flavours/texture worked beautifully. SO moreish, SO comforting – saved the day. Would return just for this dish!!!

I've eaten here many times and absolutely love the value, soup items on the menu are around $13 and others are that up to $19, it's great value and I love the food aswell. It's secluded nature also makes it nice for business meetings, or dates!

3.5

Thanh Vinh often seem less busy compared to the other Vietnamese restaurants on Hopkins Street, and in a mission to discover the reason behind this, I decided to give them a go.

The menu is as one would expect from most Vietnamese restaurant - showcasing 100 over dishes, half of which are same same but different from one another. My partner and I settled for the Crispy Egg Noodles with seafood and veggies, and Broken Rice with grilled pork and Chinese sausage.

The crispy egg noodles did its name justice, and those that had soaked up the gravy retained a firm yet chewy bite even in its softer incarnation. The flavoursome, but slightly salty, gravy was of an enjoyable consistency - not too runny, nor too thick. The seafood mix were reasonably fresh, and so were the veggies.

The broken rice could be improved on, as the pork was a bit too dry. The rice, however, was moderately sticky and fluffy, so that's a tick of approval from me.

Maybe their specialty dishes are better (e.g. the braised herbal duck noodle soup and the barramundi vermicelli whatchamacallit dish), but I guess I will have to find out next time!

Good solid Vietnamese food. The congee has great flavour and a lovely texture, and the laksa has good taste. Well situated to get plenty of foot traffic.

I’ve become somewhat of a regular here because the food is always good and the service is amazing. The staff are all super nice and will give you green tea while you wait, even if you’re picking up a take away. Big fan 👍🏼

First up, the chicken was delicious, so moist and tender with the crispiest skin (tomato rice with chicken). The pork with broken rice was pretty plain due to the lack of other ingredients and was overpowered with lemon grass. The tea flask top was tea stained and gross. The waitresses were a bit rude and the wait times was definitely lengthy (30 minutes).

The food was amazing, fresh , well presented and delicious, couldn’t stop eating. Perfect venue to catch up with a group of friends and not heavy on pocket, value for money pricing.

Overall an average experience

The place is clean, customer service was prompt but the food was lacking authenticity. Ordered the usual when you go to a Vietnamese restaurant, beef pho, I was disappointed because it lacked in flavour.. not much else to say
Cath
Ummm.... coleslaw bland, needs way more fresh herbs, vest and general oomp. Tom yum pretty good.

Very quiet after the noise on the street. Soft music only. Good for eating and talking. Lovely decor: great food. Lovely service. These people care about food and customer service. Been there several times. My go to place now.

I went for the Laksa, which lacked in the shrimp paste department, resulting in a fairly bland dish. The Seafood Char Kway Teow was great, with plenty of smokey flavours from the wok permeating the thick rice noodles along with the fruits of the sea.

Excellent food and great flavours. Chilli chicken with lemongrass is punched full of flavour and the veges in the dish are as good as the rest of it. Khai even does the basics well. Just a basic fried rice has excellent flavour. Love this place. Great value.

Thanh Vinh occupies a prime location at the crossroads of Footscray's Nicholson Street Mall, just a minute away from the Little Saigon Markets. The menu is huge and diverse, featuring largely Chinese and Vietnamese style dishes, but rest assured, the staples like pho, and com tam (combination broken rice) are all present. What was impressive was the sheer number of individual serve rice dishes, mostly pairing a deep-fried or stir-fried dish with rice. I ordered the stir-fried beef in black bean sauce and bitter melon with rice which is really more of a Chinese dish. Thanh Vinh's version did not disappoint. A huge plate of wok-fried beef and thinly sliced bitter melon topped with a dark black bean sauce with a bowl of rice arrived at the table. The meat was smoky with "wok's breath" and had clearly been well-fried. The sauce flavorsome and on the salty side (some with subtle palates might consider it a little overpowering) but I like it that way. Service was friendly, discreet and yet attentive - a request for a side of chillies was promptly attended to. Overall, I think Thanh Vinh is great value for money as a cursory glance around revealed most customers' dishes to be on the large side and they all looked pretty delicious. Will definitely return again.

Love this place. Excellent food and service! Broken rice, herbal duck and grilled beef in betel leaf are my favourites! Oh love the avocado and custard apple (soursop) smoothies, they are made with real fruit! This is one of the few places where the owner(s) take pride in serving good food and keeping customers happy rather than making a quick buck!

Love this place, been coming for years. Even with the change of management a couple years ago, the quality of the food remains the same. Fast and friendly service, tasty and fresh food. Excellent value too! Highly recommended.

We're in love with shopping at the fresh food stores in Footscray, and we also love the Vietnamese restaurants with really hard to pronounce Vietnamese names. We tried another one on Hopkins St, and was again impressed with the good quality of the food and the great value for money.

The resto changed a few owners in last couple years. I was reluctant at first but surprisingly this time was really good. Even my in laws love it. I hardly rate any restaurant above 7/10. This time is exception for Vietnamese and Chinese food. Everyone should come and try.
