Review Magic Momo Kafe - Footscray

This unassuming little hidden gem is easy to miss among the plethora of dining options in the Barkley street food and beverage precinct. Simple and tastefully decorated, it is clean and tidy. Through to the rear of the restaurant, you'll find a bar that prepares some decent cocktails, which you can enjoy either at the bar, at your table, or at the beer garden at the rear of the restaurant. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and ready to have a chat. The food is authentic, delicious, and freshly prepared. When you're in this neck of the woods, don't hesitate to give this restaurant a try; I'm sure you won't regret it.

Best Nepalese food in Melbourne. Great ambience and service. Must try buff chowmein, chatamari and thali set. Wasn’t a big fan of their Pani puri though! Overall, 5 star service. Highly recommend!

The best Nepalese restaurant in Melbourne. I would definitely recommend everyone to try. My expectations met with every food I ordered and I often go there. Good job guys. Keep it up 👍

The best momos I had in Melbourne. Authentic nepalese food with great service. Must try Sukuti Sandheko 😍

The place looks small from the street, but inside it's a bit of a tardis. The seating stretches back through the doorway, past the bar, and then further into a beer garden at the rear. Plenty of seating and perfect for balmy evenings. Excellent Nepalese food. Tried all of the Momos. They were fantastic. I love the chilli momos. Tried Magic Momos again. This time tried the momo soup. WOW it was fantastic, and the lamb curry was equally good. The spicy potato salad lives up to it's name. Great stuff. It's all so good.

The people and hospitality here was good. We didn't like the tea that we ordered where they were more than happy to resolve the problem. Loved the Sukiti Sandheko, and the momo were also quite good.

Loved the food here. The steam and the fried momo tastes good and authentic, didn't really like the taste of the C Momo or the sandeko momo though. The newari khaja set and the chicken choila set also tastes good, definitely would give those a try.

You will experience best Nepalese cuisine here. Momos, chowmein tastes really nice but thali was average

3.5<br/>Didn't find them VERY special, but left full and satisfied. Different kind of food to what I would normally try and the momo platter introduced me to all different types of momos which is great for a newbie like me. Service is pretty friendly too

Food:- Magic MOMOs has always been my go2 MOMO place always good with any variety of momo, taste best, perfectly done, totally satisfying always 🤤 with great momo chutney....<br/>Bad:- I searched around places for *chicken lollipop* (CL)and this is the only place to sell them however i was very disappointed with this entrée See pic for reference not worth it for whatever amount you pay, only small 4pcs, it was hard overly fried not able to bite, no chicken, no taste just deep fried with tasteless noway coating, served with ketchup weird, I have eaten good quality of CL but these where not atall close to for what CL looks or tastes like, make a wise choice b4 ordering anything else.<br/>Customer Service:- not great👎🏻ordered takeaway reached after given time still waitress was very slow to reach from point A-B... Should be mindful about others time!<br/>PS: undoubtedly MOMOs are best, leave the rest!

Went for dinner as I saw an offer on groupon. I had not been to that side of Barkley street before. So many restaurants. Magic momo was by far the busiest and for good reason. The food was amazing. Chicken momo were full of flavour. The curries both chicken and goat melted in your mouth. The curry sauce was complex in flavour and made me say to my husband - this food makes me happy. Well done magic momo we will be back.

Great little restaurant! Tried momo platter, masala tea and chatpate. Amazing taste (spicy as ordered), fresh tasting dishes. Second time trying Nepalese cuisine - Was not disappointed. Will go again 😉

Had take away steamed, pan fried and deep fried momos. I haven’t had them before so I’m not sure if the skins of momos were supposed to be so thick. The flavour was also not balanced. I won’t be in a rush to order them again.

We felt like having momos on a cold weekend and finally google search led us here. And What a revelation this cosy little place was!!<br/><br/>Though the impatient kid was put off by the wait we decided to stay on and it was a wise decision. The place was super full with customers lining up of for upto 30 minutes to find a place in this tiny joint even though it was a super cold night.<br/>We tried their veg momo platter, veg chowmein, puri tharkari, masala tea and the dahi rasbhari. All of them tasted great and fresh and super warming for the cold night. The chili chutney took us to another world.<br/>Service was not up to the mark as there was only one lady handling the bills, waiting customers, seated customers and cleaning the tables. We understand her volume of work and anyways the food compensated all that.<br/>Will definitely visit again on another cold night and am happy to wait :).<br/>PS: They do not take table bookings.

Nice little joint with not a lot of ambience. But very pleasant service and good food with very reasonable prices. I am a huge fan of momos and this place serves lovely momos. Not the best I’ve had but quite good. And a huge range of chicken and veg momos on offer. I definitely recommend this place if you are in the area.

One of the best place in Melbourne for momo lovers. Good service, nepalese food. It’s a small place and good for small groups. In Platter one can taste various types of momos.

My score 3.5 stars.  J & I had a late lunch here a week ago on Sat 12th Jan - we haven't tried Mo mo's since eating at Mo Mo Station many years ago.  Small interior without a lot of ambience, but the female waiter was very pleasant & relaxed.  3 or so groups of people also ate-in while we were there, plus a few TA's.  We ordered:  Vegie Pakora's > Quite a generous serve, very tasty even if maybe left in the fryer a tad too long - came with tomato sauce!  Vegie Mo Mo tasting platter (5 types @ $25 - all with same puréed filling which was very nice) - 4 each of:  Steamed > Good, soft & easy to eat.  Fried > ok, but not our cup of tea texturally (skin was a bit like a chewy old style suburban fried dim sim).  Kothey (pan fried) > Very good, better option than the harder (deep) fried ones (sort of in between steamed & fried).  Chilli > Done in a quite spicy tomato sauce with coriander, chunky onion & lots of chunky capsicum.  Sauce & veg distracted from the mo mo's IMO, although it did make them nice & moist.  Sandheko (spicy marinated) > Very good.  Firmer than steamed ones texturally, spicier (in this case the spice added rather than distracted from the experience).  They were also topped with spicy "rice bubbles"?, finely diced onion & another savoury "sprinkle" which was all VERY moreish.  Dipping sauce was ok, if a bit salty.  Pity you can't mix a few Chicken with the Vego ones on the same tasting platter, but that's splitting hairs.  Reasonable value & we will return to have the Kothey & Sandheko mo mo's again - maybe I'll try a small serve of the Chicken Crunchy one's too as a naughty flexitarian's treat (the nice waiter said they were her favourite)...

We visit this place with a Groupon voucher, we booked a table for two with Groupon booking website for 8pm. When we arrived at that store , we was told by a rude waitress that can’t redeem Groupon after 5pm(this did not stated on the Groupon T&C’s). The waitress is not welcoming, there’s limited space and cleanliness need to be improved overall.

I was in the area for Aangan, but seeing this place wanted to give their Momos a try. Not a lot of places do as many varieties of Momos as this place. I decided to order the basic fried momos and their special Crunchy momos which had a similar texture as KFC chicken as per the hostess. The momos imo were pretty good and I would certainly go back there just for them. The accompanying chutney although was pretty drab and unflavorful. The place is pretty small and won’t pull you in with its ambiance. They do however accept Card Payments and there is parking outside.

First time trying Nepalese food and it definitely didn't disappoint!<br/>Not really knowing what to order, we got the chicken Magic momo platter, chicken soup, and the lamb choila set. The platter had various types of dumplings either steamed, fried, or in a curry based tomato sauce - they were quite tasty. Chicken soup was great, tender pieces of chicken and hearty soup great for the cold winter! The lamb choila set was a spicy lamb salad with beaten rice and soy beans. Lamb was very spicy but flavoursome, especially with the dipping sauce, unfortunately it was incredibly overcooked I struggled to stab my fork through it.<br/>Overall, it was very affordable, service was decent and I'd be happy to come back and try their many other dishes!

Quick service through Uber eats. Dumplings were delicious! Meat was gross, very chewy and hard ew, probably wouldn’t order again. Very spicy! <br/>

Nice place to have good #momos. Variety of nepalis food with authentic taste. We had vegetarian kothey and sandheko momos. Nicely prepared and presented dishes. Love too see some more varieties of drinks other than coke.

We went here because White Elephant, across the road, where we planned to go, was closed. It's small and cramped and was delightfully warm when we walked in the door, but due to a problem with the door not staying closed it quickly became cold. Having loved the food in Nepal, I was excited to try this place. Rather than having something I'd loved in Nepal, I made the mistake of ordering the Newari set, which was horrible. My 3 friends all had the Nepali Khana set, which they liked more than mine, but not much. On a positive note, we had a magic momo platter (vegetarian) and all of the momos were delicious! I'd go back for the momos but definitely not for anything else.

We planned to have momos for lunch from work. Have of us hadn't even tried momos earlier. And they did great. Everybody loved it. Be it steamed, fried , kothey or chilli momos.. they were all great.

This was my first Momo and Nepalese experience! I ordered the Magic Momo Platter. I had either the option of all VEG or all chicken. So I chose chicken.<br/><br/>My platter came with 3 different style Momo’s... Fried, steamed and chilli Momo’s (which were very hot!).<br/>Momo’s were cooked beautifully... <br/><br/>Atmosphere and decor was very basic... but that’s not why you come here. Magic Momo Kafe is good for a quick, no-thrills, tasty Momo experience...

Being a fan of Nepalese food, I'd been wanting to give Magic Momo Kafe in WEFO a try for a while, and an offer on Groupon prompted me into action. We ended up visiting on Friday evening after booking via the eponymous website. When we arrived there seemed to be some confusion about our reservation, but we were soon found a table. The venue is very small with maybe 6 tables and the decor is basic. We took advantage of the byo option, but the glasses offered were misty, so we stuck to sipping from our beer bottles.

Had previously dined in at Magic Momo Kafe and enjoyed the experience.  Subsequently ordered food for takeaway.  I can honestly say it was the worst takeaway meal I've had in my life.  Would not go near the restaurant ever again and would recommend others to stay clear.

Authentic Nepalese food! Best Nepalese restaurant in town 👌🏻👌🏻 <br/>The look and feel of the place could use some tidying up, but the food just makes me forget about everything else! Will definitely make you come back for more.
FoodieCouple10
Best Nepali restaurant in town, there isn't anything like this restaurant elsewhere in Melbourne. If you live in Melbourne you must once try this restaurant<br/>Lost of vegetarian options available and friendly staff with moderate pricing.

It was important to write this review because this was my first, worst experience with noodles :-(<br/><br/>1st, Though the restaurant was empty, I had wait for 20 minutes to be served<br/>2nd, the quantity of the noodles served was very less that they better should be serving in side plates.<br/>3rd, Aleast it was expected that the food will be delicious enough to not to feel bad about the restaurant but sorry it disappointed me badly.<br/>No way, I am entering this place ever.<br/>I strictly, DON'T recommend this to anyone !!!!
Nupur Dhingra
Food is good. But the service is snail slow, like really. Ordered Chowmein and momos and got served with the chowmein 30 minutes late. <br/>However, the taste somehow compensated for it. <br/>They need to work on their proportions.

Extremely bad experience, firstly a very congested small place, totally unprofessional service - the way of taking order, talking, serving and handling customers everything was way below the standard. In addition the food wasn't good and also the quantity served comparatively less. Magic momo has no magic at all; the worst dinner experience I ever had.

Absolute disappointment over customer service..went there with a friend and ordered a nepalese khana thali with chicken..and they served me goat instead of chicken..when I asked them about it I was told I actually ordered goat..when my friend asked them about it ..they told him I was intoxicated but he knew I ordered chicken.. I didn't eat anything and paid for it..I wouldn't go there in future ...as they love to blame a customer for $18..

This restaurant has converted to authentic nepalese restaurant and changed trading hours from 12pm -10pm(Wednesday-Monday) and closed on Tuesday. People, who know authentic taste of nepal would definitely enjoy the food .The great nepalese restaurant to be .Must have food : Khana set,Mo:mo(nepalese dumplings),Lamb chhoila set.,Newari set -amd much more .👍🏻👍🏻

One of the best indicators of a great eatery on Barkly Street is the number of diners already inside. On this measure, we should have never entered this empty little eatery.<br/><br/>Our momos were bland and disappointing. The portion size was small and the service was completely M.I.A. <br/><br/>Given the breadth and quality of eateries on this strip, I would recommend giving this place a miss.

The Momo are very good. It's good has been better since the last time I went there. Tried egg bara it was alright wouldn't order it next time but if you are crazy for Momo then it will quench your thirst.
Sammy
Went to have some momos , wasn't overtly impressed. Not the best momos around . Probably were microwaved , hence not fresh . It wasn't bad , but wouldn't go back in a hurry. To be fair probably should've tried other stuff as well and/or give the restaurant another chance before making up my mind .

This tasted so terrible please don't ever go here.

Lovely. The food were awesome, for a person who tried it for the first time, i would definitely come back again. They have the best momo's you can get in Melbourne and for anyone who says otherwise doesn't know the taste of actual momo's.
Jon
Delicious!. Ate here for the first time tonight, was delicious! Goat curry was amazing, and had to fight the wife off eating all my lentils. Definitely coming back seeing it's so well priced as well. Don't expect haute cuisine, expect real food. Yum

Awful - no other way to explain it. I received the sms saying that the food was going to be ready in 45 min. Then I called to confirm and they told me yes, ready in 45 min. When I got there, the lady told me that the food was ready 30 min ago and it has been sitting there. The food: Wedges: They gave me cold fries. ups. Momos: Cold and nothing magic about them. Chicken lollipops: cold. Curry: watery and mostly bones. Hardly any meat. Not going back

Cheap and good food. Chicken momo and spicy chicken momo was good. You get what you pay for. 6.5/10.

Delicious momo. Love their dumplings and even the vegetarian tempura. (it's not really like tempura at all though) <br/>However I think there's a lot of msg due to the funny feeling left behind on the tongue. <br/>I also think they increased the price slightly since opening but I keep coming back anyway because I love it. <br/>Nice friendly staff too. Always makes me order on time when I call ahead to order for Pickup in advance. <br/>Thanks.!

Tried momos and veg noodles. Worst noodles I have ever had and momos was not good at all. I will not recommend it as it's not worth enough.
Sabnam

Long wait. Order deprioritised. Salt overloaded.. My first visit to Magic Momo was a takeaway lunch order one Saturday. My order consisted of a steamed pork momo dumplings and a chicken manchurian. Arriving at precisely 12pm, my order was the first of the day. I was told that it will be a 40 minute wait as the kitchen was still not opened. So I took a stroll to see the interesting shops along Barkly St. When I came back 20 minutes later, lo and behold, the waiters were busy serving a foodie tour group led by one western suburb food blogger. This then made the real reason for my long wait all the more clear. <br/><br/>Back to the food. Unfortunately both dishes were excessively salty to be pleasurable eating. It could be that the chef had an off day, but will I give them one more chance when there are so many other interesting restaurants I wanted to try?

I went to magic momo kafe which looks like a nepalese restaurant. The word 'momo' attracted me. Firstly the reviews here say that they have breakfast and burgers. I didnt find that in the menu. May be it was with the old restaurant. I went twice only to get disappointed. Both chicken and veg momos were utter tasteless with extra garlic and ginger. The chicken fried was not something that anyone can cook home. Nothing special. The other dish called as Nepalis Khana - rice with chicken curry, spinach, bamboo shoot was total crap for which i paid $16.90. I couldnt even eat the bamboo shoot as it was disgusting and the chicken curry was was weird. I have tried a couple of nepalese food here in melbourne which are far far better than this place.

Converted into Nepali restaurant . Awesome;)

Quite nice, I would eat here again. Burgers are nice, as are the chips. Good prices and good service too.

They recent changed some things in menu , and bring C momo , its bit different and nice<br/><br/><br/>-----28 Jun, 2013-----<br/><br/>The pancake was awesome with banana and maple syrup

The momos are outstanding!

Nom nom momo. The momos (nepalese dumplings) here were DELISH! we tried the steamed chicken and the fried beef momos. very good value for money, perfect for a cold night. and the special momo sauce was to die forr!!<br/><br/>as if that wasnt enough, the service was great too! very friendly! <br/>will definitely be going back for more.
