Review Golden Harvest - Footscray

Joshua Gilmore
Pretty decent food, BBQ pork was amazing. Don't let the appearance or location put you off this is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Footscray. Great for large groups and families but can also cater for smaller groups, and couples. Difficult to get a seat if you're on your own, unless its later at night.

Pretty good, enoki mushroom with tofu and the duck was the best
Luis Nadong
I love the duck, crispy pork, fried combination noodles, fried rice and service you can only expect from an old school restaurant in Footscray

Used to be good but quality has really dropped over the last few months. Staff don't really seem to care and get quite angry if you mention it.

It is a great place with great Cantonese dishes. I highly recommend pecking duck on rice for first timers.
Hung Ngo
Good value and tasty authentic Cantonese dishes.
maplealvon
One of the better Chinese food places in and around Footscray.

Forget your Christmas ham order the suckling pig for Christmas and you'll never look back.

This is not a fancy or flash looking restaurant- but the food is consistently amazing. The crispy pork & Peking Duck is to die for. Salt & Pepper Calamari is always tender, not over cooked and rubbery & greasy like so many other places.

I have never had a bad meal here. It's always busy!
Although it has recently closed for relocation.... I will be keenly looking out for their next address. Can't wait to get back.

I've been here 4 times (I moved to Melbourne permanently less than 1 year ago) however this place has became 1 of my favs---and I will definitely continue returning. I have never been dissapointed--juicy moist duck and yummy fried tofu. The quality of food and ambiance is great.Price wise it is abit on the high side when you dine in however given the food quality to me at least its worth the price paid.

Nice food with reasonable price for lunch around Footscray area. The crispy pork were very juicy and tender yet it had crunchy skin. The deep fried crispy spare ribs chicken with rice was the highlight for my today's visit. Spacious eating area served by good staffs.

Hong kong style Chinese Food, similar to Hong kong BBQ, we ordered the mud crab in xo sauce which is not bad, the beef we had is also good. Everyone loves the murray cod steamed fish.

Probably the best Chinese BBQ restaurant in Melbourne. Here we tried the roast duck which was succulent with minimal amount of fat. There was no "duck-smell" as well, while the accompany sauce was lightly sweet and balanced. We also like the subtle ginger taste in the sauce. Overall, this wax probably this best roast duck we had in Melbourne.

We also tried the fried softshell with salted egg yalts which was yum. The salty egg yalts went well with the crispy coating. Though it could fee a bit sandy towards the end.

We would return to try the roast pork next time.

What you do when you have craving for mud crab but don't want to head into the city. This hidden away restaurant in footscray is a secrete revealed. Excellent service and generous with their condiments when you ask for XO sauce they give you plenty.

This was one of my favourite place in Footscray. I love their wagyu beef in sizzling hot plate and peking duck.

The suckling pig was also the best one in town. We pre-ordered the whole pig ($300) few days before picking up in the morning, the skin was very crispy and the meat was super tendered.

Don't expect anything on service though.

Updated: ordered a whole suckling pig for the new year and price has increased to $348. However, it was still very delicious and we couldn't resist not to buy it.
Dave
Fantastic Peking duck pancakes. Great service. Wish I had discovered this sooner! Will definitely be coming back in future.

Decided to try out Golden Harvest for dinner tonight. Got a table straight away and were served a pot of tea. We ordered Szechuan beef and spicy salt and pepper tofu with plain rice.

The salt and pepper tofu was fantastic, we'd definitely order that again. The szechuan beef was not very spicy and not to my partners liking, he found it quite sweet. He needed to ask for chilli to put on it. In doing that he advised the waiting staff the dish was supposed to be spicy, staff were willing to discuss the issue. I guess we'll need to specify that we want it hot if we go back there.

The restaurant is very big and spacious, it was nice and warm inside but whenever someone comes in from outside a cold breeze comes in.

The roast pork in the window looks good but we did not try it.

This place standout with their display of roast pork and duck in Footscray market area. Saw people keep coming to buy the roast pork for take away. I can tell that the bbq pork, roast pork, and the roast duck are not the best, but it will not dissapoint you.

We tried from their lunch menu slection which come with rice or noodle. The meals are generous in size and they tastes nice too without heavy msg aftertaste. But I feel that there is nothing exciting or special. It's like good home cooking with slightly high price tag.

The restaurant is well spaced and have that luxurious feel. While we were here, saw someone put special order for whole roast pig. If there is a need for that special event, this can be one of your choice.

Took my niece here for her birthday, big mistake. Positively unfriendly staff. We ordered a serve of crispy pork but they said there wasn't enough so they would add some barbecue pork, cool, except they then charged us $28 instead of $17.50. I can only lament all the amazing places we could've eaten for the $65 we spent on a very average meal. Do yourself a favour, go somewhere else.

Always go here for our regular roast duck and roast pork. It goes alright but when we order for take away the guy who chops the pork always ends up giving you all the FAT which are the LEFTOVERS of the best meat they give to their customers in the restaurant. I don't recommend this place at all to anyone!

Possibly the worse Chinese food I've ever had AND it was mega expensive. $55 for 2 people for a terrible fish dish, a serve of fried rice and a single serve of san choy bau (plus a Coke and a water).
One of the dishes was this seafood concoction with bean curd. Imagine processed seafood, tofu cooked a few days ago, soaked in a glue-like-substance and you have my dish!
Has put me off Chinese food!!!
PLEASE remove all shark fin soup from your menu and my friends and i would then be happy to eat at your restaurant. Shark finning is depleting our shark population and causing an environmental crisis. Please help by removing it from your menu. Thanks.

The dumplings were super sticky and fresh, and tasted amazing

Terrible service. To be fair, the food were very well prepared and decently priced. However, the service provided by the staff members were appalling from start to finish.
It did not take long for us to be seated and provided a menu. When I asked to order, the waiter nodded but did not take our order until the third time of asking. The big issue when it comes to pay the bill. Our bill came to $96. We placed $50 x 1 and $20 x 3 so we expected $14 change. They assumed the change were tips and pocketed the money without asking. We had to ask to have our change back. When the waiter brought the change to our table, she simply threw the change in front of us. I was thinking to leave $4 as tips despite the initial poor service but after that incident, I was more than happy to put the rest of the change back into my pocket. I have never experienced such unbelievable service. From now on, ill only take away and will never eat in again.

Mostly convenient. I go here regularly for their roast duck, more for the convenience than the exceptional taste. Their roast pork tends to be too fatty - they must choose cuts which have the thicker layers of fat.
And agree, service is mediocre at its best.

Watch out for the slippery steps upon entry!
Phung_quyen
It gets worse everytime. Today I went there with a friend. It took more than half an hour to get served. I noticed that all the Caucasians get all of the waitress' attention, not other race. It took another half an hour for dessert to get served, not until we made a payment. Then a waitress came to us, very angry and wanted to start a fight?!? They then talked bad about us in Cantonese, thinking that we wouldn't understand. Such a horrible experience and we will never go back there.
Loanmatnhung80
Getting worst. Today i brought half roast duck there, the man cut old duck, it taste old like yesterday! He stuff it in all the bone not like somewhere eles. A waist of time and money buying something un fresh.

Ok food but the service wasn't great - arrogant and can be rude from sometimes.

Good Food but Arrogant Servive.
Not sure why there is only 1 reviewer comment. But let me share an honest review and experience from last night dinner. We called and booked a table for 2 of us. The woman that answered the call wasn't happy that it was only for 2 people but she didn't say that they don't take small table. On arrival I saud we have a booking. That was when she told me that they don't take a booking for 2. There was a free table but for 4 seatings. She won't give it to us and gave a stupid excuse that it was a reserved. The restaurant has only 3 or 4 tables for 2 people. The rest are mostly for 4 seats and a few big long and round tables for bigger groups. We had to wait for another table that was for 4 seats while that other empty was left empty! After we sat down, there were a few other couples of 2 walked in and were given the other tables that were meant for 4 seats. So I can't understand the big fuss when they don't even have customers walking in in a group of 3 or 4! I thought that was very arrogant for a start to our first experience at this restaurant. The staff were not friendly too. All have unsmiley faces! But, the food was good and delicious. However, on a pricier side for a place like Footscray. We ordered 2 types mixed roast, a claypot duck and taro, white bait in salt and spicy, crab sauce with silken tofu, fried rice and a bottle of red. So we were not their traditional table of 2 that have a dish each! It cost us $120! The most expensive meal we ever had in Footscray and not a simple thanks from the restaurant! So arrogant. No matter how good the food is, the price and the lack of service will not bring us back to this place again! Once enough! A better restaurant called Hong Kong Barbeque house on Barkly st just around the corner is much better - a bit old and grungy but better service and price with a bit more vibe and character with no attached arrogance to the service.

Also known as Golden Harvest. Amazing food, epic roasts. But this place is a catch 22, service is mediocre and unfriendly but the food here is so good.

Cash only. We went here had an average meal and then when we went to pay had to walk 3 blocks to the atm to get cash... what's wrong with eftpos? Nothing special here.

Sometime they have nice food but sometimes the food i get is quite disgusting... We took away some soy chicken tonight and its not cooked!! I know sometimes with soy chicken it can be a bit pink. But the chicken i got today was NOT COOKED and i can taste blood when i bit in. Its disgusting. Ive already microwave the chicken hoping its gonna cook the chicken a bit more but its still bad. Im just hoping i wont be sick from it!!!

Love it!. I love this place and have been coming here for years.. always packed with Chinese. I took two conservative Christian friends who believe that any pork eaten in a Chinese restaurant will instantly kill you and they gingerly tried my Century Egg and Roast Pork Congee...now nothing will suit them but that they have that congee whenever they visit Footscray...it is the best in town. The comments about service and bony duck...often the Chinese like rather brusque service, the manageress is strict but helpful and a lot of the waitresses are very sweet...there are good and bad times of the year for duck. At certain times of the year, duck is always bony, and also, lobster is watery during the breeding season.

-----20 Jun, 2014-----

Love it!. Great food. Been coming here for years. You only come here for the food which is top class, not an all round dining experience as the decor/service not great. Never had a bad dish here. Worth the 40 minute drive from my house.

Food varied with lovely scallop dishes and Mongolian beef and other dishes that were rather ordinary. Overall though the experience was ruined by the slow and unfriendly service

Simply stunning. Its quick, its good and always is. my partner and i eat here once a week or more, its no nonsense service, no airs and graces but gee the prawns, fish, vegies and rice are always the best. Stay away if you want 5 star service but have a go if you want 6 star food.

Roast meats are perfect. Love the roast meats in this place. On special occasions we get the lobster :)

You don't come here for the service! It's basic but the food is fantastic.

Worth getting a break down of bill too at end - feel we've been overcharged (by a LOT) twice before so we've avoided it recently.

The food aren't bad, but poor services is an understatement.

Love this place! Don't go here if you're looking for quality service or to have a quiet meal. This place has the best Asian BBQ. I do recommend people going on off peak hours! It won't disappoint

Great bbq meats. Have to be a bit patient with this restaurant, the staff aren't pleasant and sometimes the floor feels bit grotty. But one bite into those tender crispy duck skin and all your concerns melt away.

I love this place!. Me and my partner come here at least once a month, don't even look at the menu and order the same thing everytime, and it it always as good as the last. The roast duck is the best thing I've ever eaten, so tasty. We brought along my mum to try it out with us, she absolutely loves duck now too. I live about 30-40 minutes away from Footscray but the trip is worth it every time. There are no asian restaurants in my town that are up to this standard. I've been to expensive chinese restaurants at crown and places like that and I have to say I'd pick Golden Harvest everytime. Love it.

Okay Food, Poor Service. You could tell the waiting staff didn't want to be there. Maybe it was a long day.. but there's still a standard you have to maintain. We ordered 7 dishes but they all kinda taste like one another.. the ingredients were definitely drained by this homogenous sauce they used for everything. The fried chicken ribs with pepper and chilli salt was good though.

After being recommended by a colleague to try this place for the Asian BBQ , I have to be honest and say it was slightly dissapointing. On both occasions the roast duck and bbq pork was slightly dry and mostly bones and not overlay fresh. For $30 , I was expecting good quality bbq . The hot and sour soup was lacking the sourness and spiciness one would expect at an Asian restaurant. I would definitely recommend you explore other options in Footscray if you are looking for good quality Asian BBQ .

Birthday dinner. This unassuming little restaurant has the most amazing food. My vegetarian friend was well satisfied. We had two large lobsters, mongolian beef that was so good we ordered a second plate, and calamari that was perfect. We're definitely making this one of our regular spots, sans the lobster of course.
Tamara
Cheap and cheerful. Pleasant atmosphere, service okay and food was great. It seems they do a roaring BBQ meat takeaway. Peking duck was good and calamari was one of the best I have had in recent times.
Steve
Excellent. Had a great lunch of 3 kinds of bbq meat with rice and a vegetarian dish. It was excellent food at the price and we really enjoyed it. Also bought a box of pork for $10 for lunches the next day. This is a great place and the best of its kind I have tried.

I've never found such a bad service in Melbourne before!!!!!Even the stuffs had NO eye contact to customers and I just wondering is all the customers owe their money?!How they can treat customers like that?I asked for a soup, but no one help me within 15mins,although most of them are avalible.so suck.Iwon't come again!

Reliable and delicious. We love coming here - the crispy pork belly and spicy deep fried calamari are my favourites. You have to work hard to catch the eye of the service staff and there is no eftpos but you can overlook these things.
Ki1979
So disappointed. Ordered the BBQ pork but they had run out. After some back and forth communication with the kitchen staff, waitress advised there were som bbq ribs and so got some of that. It turned out to be the worst pork dish I have ever had. They served the remaining scraps of whatever was left from the BBQ pork, topped it up with some sauce and plonked it on our table. It was pretty much gristle, fat, and bone. I was so disappointed! The accompanying fried rice was also plain, no prawn/shrimp and a scattering of pork bits and onion. Needless to say I will never return here. So so disappointed given the expectation of the place.

Food was ok, service was very unsatisfactory! Wont eat there again.

Jennifer. Ripped off twice! Ordered half a pig for Xmas and got about one quarter even though we paid over $100
Went there with friends for our favorite, barramundi and got the tiniest fish for which we were charged $29 When we argued that the board said little fish $25 & big one $29 they told us
"only one size" even though the board had two prices We were charged $5 for a beer & we had no beer I took 1/2 a bottle of wine as their wine is awful & they charged $5 corkage. Goodbye Golden Harvest

Poor, pathetic and deaf. I called 5 days before to place a booking for 6 people. When we arrived, no booking was noted for me. But that was just the start. When we were ordering our mud crab along with the rest of the dishes, we specifically told the waitress that the crab was to come out first and everything after we finished. Within 5 minutes of the mud crab being served, the other dishes starting coming out. I told them that we didn't want them now and not what was requested when ordering. The waitress put the dishes aside on the kitchen bench (leaving it to get cold), 15 minutes later when we finished out crab, the cold dishes starting coming out. When I complained, they pretended to not hear me (and I was speaking Chinese so it's not like they didn't understand). Ruined my evening. Poor service. Zero care factor. No apology. Never to come back again!!!

Bustling, busy, fun and tasty! The most amazing deep fried seafood I've ever had, yummy vegies and wedding cake styled pink highlights on the roof to make you blush. I'll be going back for roasts some time soon.

What a Chinese restaurant should be.. Cheap, authentic, cheap, fast service, cheap, awesome roasts, cheap cheap cheap!

Each time I don't feel like cooking, and feel like Chinese, my legs automatically take my body to Golden Harvest. I am quite spoilt living near Footscray, so to all who think about going to Chinatown in the city, think again. You will not be disappointed with the roast duck and crispy noodles or the crispy pork and rice or even a fish of your choice straight from the fish tank. I mean, $8 for a real meal is unheard of these days! Especially given the quantity you get.

Don't cook dinner tonight. Go to Golden Harvest instead.
Ilovefood
My friends and I ventured here to have a good ol' round table dinner. We were pleasantly surprised. The service was friendly and efficient. We ordered a variety of dishes and they all were quite tasty, except the roast pork and duck. We did get the last servings of the roast, so I'm not sure if it's because of that? My vegetarian friends were also quite happy with their meals. So I'll definitely be back again next time I crave a good Chinese dinner!

Good family restaurant. Lunch, dinner, food for anytime, even to take away! Rice with roasted pork or roasted duck is a filling and delish lunch. Come with family and have crab or lobster in xo sauce or fried and salted (i think thats what its called). Don't forget to try the special fried rice or fried rice with salted fish. YUM.
Steve
I've dined here twice and the service is fast and efficient. Relegated to Vego options, the fried tofu was fresh and delicious as was the vegetables with mushroom sauce.

Cantonese food - the food of south-eastern China and Hong Kong - was the first Chinese regional cuisine to gain a foothold in Australia, and has since become the most popular. Over time it has morphed to suit mainstream Australian tastes, giving us "Chine
