Delicious food, good conversational owner, great coffee at end, homey atmosphere... we will definitely be back!!
We decided to try this Ethiopian restaurant after reading the Zomato reviews, as we were in Footscray. While my initial expectation was pretty average, by the time I walked out of the place I could not be happier. Ras Dashen serves a variety of delicious Ethiopian foods and is also vegetarian friendly. I loved their barbequey lamb dish which came out with a bit of veges and injera. A cup of ginger tea after a feast of a meal was definitely a great idea and the whole thing only cost 30 bucks for 2 people. Considering the amount of foods served, friendly staff members, and the general ambience of the restaurant, it was a steal. Highly recommended!
A humble joint that makes extremely delicious food! As you enter the restaurant you are welcomed with a big smile from the host. We usually let him decide our fate on what to eat and he seems to always get it right. Just let him know of any dietary preferences or allergies and he will do the rest. The food is consistently tasty and you get a good variety of dishes and stews to go with the injera bread. The atmosphere is always warm and cozy. It can get pretty busy so I suggest to book ahead to avoid any disappointments.
Consistently great food, lots of it, and good value. Along with Konjo it is the best Ethiopian food I have yet found in Footscray, and I should go here more often.
Very friendly staff. Food came out real quick. Ordered four mains and they serve it all up with injera which is really soft. Kney wot is delicous however abit spicy. Tibs fir fir was very tender lamb. Highly recommend the misir wot and beyaynetu
Came here for Sunday lunch and was blown away by how amazing everything was. We got the fish and the beef combination dish both of which were 10/10 for taste and portion size. We also ordered the coffee which I wish I could keep drinking every single day. Service was great and the vibe of the place is so relaxing. Will definitely be back many times in future and highly recommend anybody who hasn't tried to get here ASAP!
A lovely authentic experience at Ras Dashen with Wondi (owner and waiter). We took the advice of a previous Zomato review and just asked Wondi to bring us a mixture of food for two hungry diners.
We got a mixture of meat and vegetarian dishes, alongside a variety of breads and everything was amazing. Finished off with a traditional coffee which not only tasted great, but was a nice little experience.
All of this with two alcoholic drinks for just $30 a head!
Looking forward to heading back already ☺️
Had a simply amazing dinner here last night. The whole menu looked so good so we just asked the waiter to bring us enough food for two hungry people. We got six small dishes and lots of injera and it was exactly what we needed! My standouts were the beef dish and the split pea dish while my partner loved the lentils. All round a great time with great service and a super cheap price. Will definitely be back!
One of the best spots for Ethiopian in Footscray. The owner is so sweet and the food is awesome. I always get the mixed veg platter, which recently increased in price but is still a steal at $12. While everything it comes with is good, the miser wot is my favourite. You can also order a big serve of this dish on its own (plus an abundance of fluffy, sour injerra and pita bread).
I came here with my husband for a date night after our usual Ethiopian diner had closed for the night. This place had a lot of turnover of diners in the time that we were there and 1/2 were like myself anglo-saxon here to enjoy the food, the feasts and feel of the place. All were good and although the wait for the dish seemed to take awhile, that was quickly forgotten as we filled our bellies with food. Will come again in the future
Our go to spot for Ethiopian. The service is great, the beer is ice cold and the food is absolutely delicious.
What's Good! tip - ring up and book the fried fish so you don't miss out.
What a lovely evening! After reading lots of positive reviews I was so eager to eat here. My expectations were exceeded. The restaurant has a great ambience - nice lighting and incense. The beer garden also looked really cute although I didn’t eat there. The service was incredibly warm, we felt welcomed the entire time. The food was so incredibly satisfying. Fresh and hot. The food is so flavoursome and the vegetables in the dishes were deliciously flavoured and fresh. We also tried the honey wine which had a gorgeous fermented taste. Will definitely be coming back!!! 💚
Had a different restaurant that I wanted to go to but it was closed, so I walked a bit further and saw this place.
Definitely no regrets. Never tried Ethiopian food before and the food was great!
The lamb was cooked so well and the flavour was amazing. Loved how it was crunchy and charred.
The bread was sour and I had to Google injera to find out what it was. I have tried lots of different types of bread/rotis, but this was the first time I've tried this.
I would definitely come back to try other things on the menu.

It felt like going to your relatives place and being served food made with heart and warmt rather just being a customer. Loved the service, the food, coffee was amazing and most of all the people!!
Nice little family owned restaurant in Footscray. Went there for dinner had the vegan option with Shiro. The meal was delicious and satiating. The owner's son who served was friendly and gave good suggestions. The owner himself was polite and friendly.
The coffee is a must try. It is a ritual in itself. Very unique way of serving coffee.
The food is really affordable. We paid 30$ for a meal for 2 without the coffee.
The chef's who cooked the meal did a great job. This is food that satisfies the soul. Definitely worth a visit
This place is a great gem.
The owner is such a lovely guy and you can feel the love in the food.
We came in and asked for the owner a platter of what he would recommend.
He put us together a platter of 6 dishes, injera and a bit of salad and it was AMAZING!
The split peas, lamb, beef and veggies were deep in flavour, a hint of spice and not oily at all. The injera was not overly sour from the fermentation and was more then enough for us to eat all the dishes served.
Be sure to check out the painting on the wall of the owner and his restaurant and ask the owner about it.
This is the best Ethiopian cuisine in the West, possibly the state! Mundi and his wife are absolute champs dishing out the most flavoursome plates. Amazing beer garden. Lively atmosphere. Vegan/ Vegetarian friendly :)
What a great atmosphere and delicious food! So happy to have found this great place in Footscray. Just the thing for a cold winter night. Yummy food - probably the best Ethiopian I’ve had in Melbs - and also a nice, cosy and chilled out vibe. Can I live here please?
