Review Addis Abeba - Footscray

Westside best side AGAIN. Be ready and be hungry, this is a feed not to be missed. Amazing flavours, the flat bread is everything you’d ever want and more. Highly recommend coming here if you’ve never had Ethiopian before AND if you have then be prepared to have the bar raised in your mind. Come with a group and enjoy a a great time sharing!

Absolute gem!! Ethiopian food is AMAZING and this place knows how to do it well. You will feast for a very small price!! Also wonderful place for functions. Great authentic atmosphere and experience!

This is a little and no pretentious place, but the essential for a restaurant is there: excellent and tasty food, generous portions and very good service. We tried a vegan plate for two, with lentils, mushrooms, potatoes and vegetables prepared with curry and tasty sauces. Absolutely delicious. The owner is also a singer, and her Ethiopian music was sounding as background. This is a must go if you like tasty and exotic food.

Food was absolutely delicious, the staff were friendly and attentive! The red lentils and salad doused in dressing were our favourites. We got the sharing platter for four, more than enough food for all of us!

We had the sharing platter for 2. Found that most of the dishes ended up tasting the same and struggled to finish the serving as the food was quite bland and boring. Service was good, they were nice enough to wait for us to finish and closed up as soon as we left. They didn't even try to force us to leave which was nice.

Great experience, great food, great service. Quiet as we went outside busy time and the lady who served us was so helpful as we are beginners. Don’t mind the pic, kids never take good pics but they really enjoyed the meal particularly the potato in brown sauce. And they were very impressed with the fancy bread under all the meal!

Amazing food and the host/chef makes you feel like she is welcoming you into her home. The food is incredibly delicious. The have the best injera I have had. Make sure to ask for the special chili powder on the side, it really elevates the meal (if that is possible)

This place was absolutely amazing! Food was great as well as staff were really nice and considerate. Will definitely be back soon.

So anyone that knows us at Melbourne Culture Eats knows we go absolutely CRAZY for Ethiopian Food!
We are always on the journey to try different cuisines from different cultures! Honestly Ethiopian is still our NO 1 and nothing has beaten it yet!
In saying that, as we have eaten Ethiopian numerous times! We know good Ethiopian when we taste it! This place was up there as one of the best we have found in Melbourne!
The Atmosphere is Homely - there is nothing like walking into a cultural cuisine space and feeling like you have been transported to the country itself! The service was so genuine and friendly - as you would expect from Ethiopians!
The restaurant is usually targeted for Vegan/Vegetarian - please note that they did offer to make a beef dish for us to cater for my husband who just loves his meat protein!

The Combination Platter is the way to go! a sample of everything! That Berbere spice drives us to a wild taste sensation!

🍴: Combination Platter inc the following ......⁣

🍴: Foul ⁣

🍴: Miser Wat ⁣

🍴: Beef ⁣

🍴: Ater Wat ⁣

🍴: Defen Miser ⁣

🍴: Key Dinich ⁣

🍴: Tikel Goman ⁣

🍴: Dinich Ena Carrot ⁣

🍺: Walia Ethiopian Beer ⁣

To end - for the savvy purchaser the price point is great value for money! we promise you wont be disappointed.

We will be back Addis Abeba !
Follow Melbourne Culture Eats on Insta & FB for all the BEST cultural eats across Melbourne VIC

An unassuming little restaurant that nonetheless, completely knocked my socks off. The service was excellent in an attentive, understated way. Water was brought to the table and poured on arrival by the host when she brought out the menus and seated us. My companion and I shared the mixed vege combination, which consists of eight different wats and stews served on injera, with an extra injera bread per person served on the side. The food was fresh, superbly cooked and the flavours were amazing. Even though I over ate hugely (my taste buds weren't going to take no for an answer!), I still felt as if I'd just eaten good wholesome food, and didn't get that 'God-I-wish-I-hadn't-eaten-that-much' feeling afterwards. I had an Ethiopian beer on the side, and my companion had a lemonade and we walked out of there only $38.00 poorer. I can't recommend this restaurant enough, and we will most certainly be back there soon.

Absolutely delicious food. Get the platter so you can try a heap of things 👌 the lady working there is super lovely too, great service. The place feels so genuine and authentic. They truly deserve more customers! Love that it's fully vegan. ❤️ Will return for sure! Also the prices are good :)

The kesir is fantastic, the meat zigni is excellent, the location is divine, I highly recommend this place, unless you are not a spicy food fan.

This is the best Ethiopian food that I have had in Footscray so far. The meat curries and dhal were so delicious. My only issue was that the food was pretty cold when served. Service was okay. The atmosphere is very casual, perfect for an impromptu catch up where you don't want to be rushed through your dining experience. Generous servings and very reasonable prices. Would absolutely go back.

Best Ethiopian we've had in Melbourne
Very friendly staff with smiles on their faces
Relaxed atmosphere
The mixed meat with injera was so delicious and filling we couldn't finish it
Injera is light, fluffy and a lovely lemony taste
Highly recommended, we'll be back!
First time having an ethiopian food. Its very interesting the place reminds me of a traditional family run establishment. The dishes are great. A little bit in the spicy side. Finally got the chance to try an ethiopian soundough bread. It works well with the meat / curry dish.

The food was great, the owner came to speak with us directly and even hand fed us injera in the traditional Ethiopian way. Overall fantastic customer service and ambiance.

This week's 'Dinner out West' was selected by jas, African food at Addis Abeba, a white lighted almost Robbin's egg colored restaurant, of where we were the only diners. It's out west and a Tuesday, do people not have dinner out on Tuesdays? Seriously we were the only people here the whole time, this rarely happens.

Came along during Melbourne's Food and Wine festival and was delighted. Gorgeous family feel, tiny cafe but feels cosy rather than cramped. The food was divine, will definitely be returning :)

Fantastic African restaurant in a town that is dominated by African restaurants.

A word of advice, don't try to order take away over the phone, it never ends well. Just go in, be served by the lovely student who does her homework in between taking orders and enjoy the food. The take away menu is much more limited anyway so you will be missing out if you don't eat in.

The dishes are very filling. My 6ft 3 partner and I order a salad, entree and meat dish of some sort and always walk out stuffed. Our favourites are Special Tibs (cubed lamb with onion, rosemary, garlic, and jalapeno peppers on a hotplate) and the spicy lamb curry (without the butter).

We also highly rate the vegetarian platter (veganised) and the Sega Firfir (spicy lamb stew with tomato, garlic and onion tossed with injera). Plus, sometimes they have live music, which adds to the experience.

Not bad but not amazing, the service is great but the food depends on what you order.. I had the meat combo for 2 $40 the lamb in most didn't taste right the tibs wasn't chilli like it usually is, but overall a few of the dishes are nice.
Kit Flanagan
Amazing food, Ethiopian beer and the best customer service you could ask for! Will definitely be back this is the best Ethiopian in Melbourne!
Ana Glez
Amazing food and the coffee is one of the best ever ones I have ever tried.

So don’t be scared of the empty restaurant. Well, at least not when it comes with a recommendation from me.
Saskia.stengele
Delicious. We ordered the meat combo, very tasty and delicious. Also the service was friendly and always there if you need anything.

Truly delicious. So delicious! I had the vegetarian combo which was the best I've ever had. I'm told the meat combo was outstanding too.

Betam Konjo (very beautiful). Just had the vegetable platter for two and it was delicious. Very friendly and warm owners who go out of their way to show and share real traditional Ethiopian hospitality to their customers. Ambo water (Ethiopian soda water) and traditional coffee all available. Very high quality but affordable food.

Awesome!. Really fantastic food, great family atmosphere and magic tricks which blew my mind! Everything was delicious - I can't wait to go back again. Amazing value. Loved it

Delicious and great value! Had the meat combo for two, $40 and we were both stuffed (and we're pigs!). Ethiopian beers were only $5 and delicious. Plus there was a great magic display when we paid! Will be back.

Great food, great price. Our group had the meat sampler. The spices and variety was excellent. With the excellent Ethiopian beer and spiced tea our tab came to 79 dollars. Service was wonderful and prompt. I was just suprised how empty the place was given the quality and price of the food. I hear quite a bit how "dodgy" Footscray is, but coming from the US I don't quite see it. I just hope this joint can be a going concern. They deserve the business.

Amazing food and service! Best African food I have had in Melbourne!

So good!!. Hands down best ethopian food in footscray! you know it has to be good when there are road works happening blocking it off from the main road, and yet it is still packed with people on a tuesday night! really recommend the vego combo and the lamb tibs! to die for! if you like spicy, ask for it or else you will be given mild food. friendly owners, so worth my $30bucks feeding 2 people!
Millicentjane
Excellent. Inexpensive and excellent quality. Just when you think it can't get any better there are magic tricks from the staff! Lovely hosts. I will be back.
Claudia
Best Ethiopian food ever!. I've lived in Footscray for 4 years and tried most of the Ethiopian restaurants here and I must say, Addis Abeba is the best! There are some overrated famous African places here in Footscray but once you get to discover this jewel you'll never go back to the other places!
Apart from being extremely cheap (especially the beers), the food is amazingly tasty, just the exact amount of spices, deliciously fresh and the banquets always come with a salad. The variety of dishes is great, and, as a vegetarian, you get an awesome and high quality meal.
A must try if you like Ethiopian cuisine!
Frida
Amazing!. It's the first time I had Ethiopian food and I'm in love! The flavours were amazing and the staff the same. Since it was my first time she recommended a dish and she nailed it. She was so nice and helpful in all ways. And the food, I don't know were to start. All flavours were so well balanced and it was a plesuare to eat at Addis Abeba. It didn't take long at all before the food was ready either. And good prices too! I will be back there soon, maybe already tomorrow.

Amazing food at bargain [prices. Had the $35 for 2 meat special. Amazing flavours, cheap beer and great service this place is tops!
Karma Clarke
Delicious! Best Ethiopian place I have been to. Flavours were so amazing. The vegetarian combo is the best.
Danny
Great place to take friends.. This is a local to take friend from other suburbs too so they can get a good taste of Footscray. The food is great communal fun, diving into a huge injera covered with different kinds of traditional dishes with your hands is a great leveler and lots of fun. Good cheap beers and really friendly and relaxed service. Also it is dirt cheap. Check it out.
Gabe
Great service and great value. Hostess is the NICEST lady. Ask for some soft curd cheese on the side. It's yummy.
Sandy
Delicious food, great value for money, excellent service. Tastes the same or better than 'Harambe' opposite the restaurant but is almost half the price.
ASA
Not sure what other reviewers are on about. The food was perfectly edible but bland. Even the 'spicy' items were surprisingly lacking in flavour. We also found the service to be well intentioned but ultimately overbearing, with the woman who served us badgering our four year old to eat throughout the night, dispute the child's clear lack of interest. At one point she even went so far as to insert a morsel of food directly into the child's mouth! Our daughter put up with this despite being quite overwhelmed by the extaordinary and unwanted attention.

Anyway, don't let the positive reviews raise your hopes too high. I really wanted to like this place, but found it to be no more than mediocre home cooking. Good luck.

Great night out. Addis Abeba has a wonderful vegetarian banquet and the service could not be more attentive. Highlights were ful medames with fresh tomatoes, a complex shero wat, a beautiful salad (included in the second banquet), and extras including fresh chilies and a toasty, salty chili powder.
A great range of ethiopian beers and stouts rounded out the meal.
The owner also played music sung by his wife. A really great night out.

Our first time eating Ethiopian and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The service was friendly, the food was great, extremely cheap and we walked away full as a bull
Karen
Enjoyed lunch this week at yet another amazing ethiopean restaurant in footscray. The veg combo was robustly flavored with lots of variety. Great idea to order the veg combo and then spoon the meat dishes into the middle of the injera. Will definitely go back.

Great restaurant! Very welcoming with attentive service and a homely atmosphere. We had the vegetarian banquet which was delicious with generous serves. Will definitely be back.
Scott
Good all round. Good food, excellent prices and very friendly, engaging service. We were served a banquet of vegetarian dishes with loads of Injera and it was great! We really enjoyed our meal here and will definitely be back.

The other dish we order is the spacial tibs ($12), a gorgeous buttery lamb dish that comes out sizzling. We ladle it onto the platter as well, pinching up handfulls with the fresh injera.
Ms Baklover
Special tibs are so good - tiny pieces of very tender lamb, cooked with onion in butter and scattered with green chillis for crunch and punch. The doro wat is amazing too. This celebration dish of chicken and eggs cooked in deep red berbere spice is only available here on weekends and Addis Abeba's is my favourite version anywhere in Footscray. Bitsat explains the onions must be stirred continously for hours or they catch and create a burnt flavour. This is the only version I've tried that doesn't have just a hint of slightly bitter charred onion.
