Everything Aunty makes is delicious. The otak-otak in particular though, is very special. Thank you, Aunty
This is the best place in town for authentic Malay food. Homely flavours and so yummy!
Fantastic Malay food in Melbourne! Very friendly ladies and I will definitely come back again!
Fantastic authentic Malay food! Best in Melbourne! Feels like Geylang Serai!
Enjoyed every bote with my boss gonna take my misses here from now on gor lunch amd cheap prices
Sweet people, authentic flavors, welcome setting!
Having not been here for years, I decided to drop by to have a taste of their food. It's a small restaurant without any frills and is run by a husband and wife team.
Their nasi campur consisted of a serve of rice, 2 meats and a serve of vegetables (from the bain marie). It was a satisfying quick meal. The Ikan bakar was really delicious. This was prepared to order and a word of warning, the sambal was fiery! This resulted in some mild sweating coupled with euphoria.
Looking forward to returning in the future for the ayam percik. It was really nice to be able to have fairly authentic Singapore cuisine out in 'burbs.
It was 4pm yesterday after a long day of viewing display homes. Abdullah and his father Hossein (ex Electrical Engineer) served two very hungry singaporeans. Hungering for lots of healthy vegetables we settled on a really Healthy Nasi Lemak served on banana leaf, thick serves of Normah's Sambal, Premium Orient Basmati rice cooked only in coconut cream, thick sliced omellete, thick thick Cucumbers, handful of Anchovies and Peanuts, together with Hosseins coffee, and Two bowls of Rich Lontong laden with tofu and cabbage ! For 23 Dollars both our meals were testimony to the fact that I got my healthy food fix as my wife and I were desperate for healthy food. we got so healthy serves, we bought an extra nasi Lemak to go. Thanks Abdullah and Hossein for keeping the Fort safe whilst Aunty Normah was away at a dental appointment. Mind you as Singaporeans we talked about Hossein's Iranian Persian background and how he met his wife Normah from Geylang and how they moved from selling persian carpets to food.
I love this place. Everything here is made by Aunty, even the complimentary cookies she had baked the day we dined there. The nasi lemak was great (much better than PappaRich), and the otak-otak (not pictured) was a winner! It was the first time I'd tried it, and it was a delicacy. All the dishes available in the bain-marie was good too. Thanks, Aunty :)
Had the nasi lemak here and ordered fried chicken, ikan bakar, bergedil and otak on the side. The okak was seriously good. On the steep side for $5 but I would pay for it. The ikan bakar was very dry and overcooked but the sambal on it was very spicy and nice. The nasi lemak was nice but sambal for the nasi lemak was a little sour - I like mine sweet and spicy and flavourful - this seemed a little weak. Rice was fluffy though. Will go back and try their lontong and satay next time.
Friendly service, best to come early before the food sells out. Nasi Lemak is delicious and the sambal is spicy. You can order in advance by calling the shop if you want to do takeaway.
This very casual restaurant offers a limited selection of really delicious food. You need to go with the flow to enjoy this place, have a chat with the lady owner and take her advice on what to order. Just pretend she is your Aunty, you have dropped around for a quick meal and enjoy the delicious food on offer. Otherwise you will end up frustrated and confused!!
Venturing inside Selera, you may, if familiar of course, feel a sense of nostalgia. The decor is old and gives one a vibe--along with the open style kitchen--of being in an old school Singaporean "coffee shop" or hawker stall. It is run by an nice older Malay Aunty and her husband. Another nostalgic thing, is that this is the only place in Melbourne I have seen where they provide takeaway in those little clear plastic bags secured with plastic string, just like in Singapore haha. I've been here three times now and was fairly impressed. I'd heard good things about the nasi lemak, so I got that the first time around. As far as what a meal of this kind typically costs in Australia, you more or less get what you pay for. I payed around $7-something and got the full basic nasi lemak kit. Not a copious amount, but hey--$7. I only got one chicken drumstick for the chicken curry portion, which I guess is fine considering the price, but this was where the flavour was let down. Everything else was good, but the curry was weak in flavour and runny in texture. I was pretty shocked. Of course, it is not like me to review based on a single experience that only involved one dish.
The next time I returned and ordered the nasi campur. The dishes on offer are mostly very nice and tasty. The value is also decent, though not quite up there with some Indian places I've seen around who offer a similar system.
I thought I would return one more time and order some inherently hawker style dishes before passing anymore judgement. I had the mee goreng and the mee rebus. The mee goreng wasn't the Malay style as I'd expected (and I was actually relieved because the order sort of slipped out of my mouth and I chose to just live with it, haha), it was actually similar to punggol style, but had far less flavour than it should have. Still tasty, generous and lots of ingredients, but left my palate wanting. The mee rebus was a lot better. Still could have used more flavour, and the gravy could have been thicker, but the basic elements were all there and it was enjoyable. After all, you can't get mee rebus at many places around. An added bonus is that they also sell some kueh and other traditional goodies. I would return for the nasi campur and to try some other hawker dishes.
When we walked into Selera Singapore Asli, it just felt like "home"... It's no fuss dining like how it would be in Malaysia and Singapore. As we got served and ate, the owner and cook chatted with us. It just felt like we walked into our Malay friend's home and their mum is feeding us comforting home cook meals.
I think if you walk in expecting the usual Malaysian/Singaporean restaurant serving the usual hawker style foods then you might be rather disappointed. Instead, walk in for some home style Malay foods that might be even tough to find in Malaysia or Singapore unless you went to a friend's house on a special occasion.
Nothing beats having hearty Malaysian food especially when one is miles away from home. Popped into this hidden gem located along Springvale road and managed to grab a quick bite before moving on with current chores. Nasi lemak - coconut rice served with sambal, fried anchovy and peanut mix, omelette, cucumber slices and curry chicken. Tasty, wholesome and a pretty much balanced diet eh;)
Drove up one Friday night to savour their nasi lemak. And they did not disappoint. What sets them apart is that they use basmati rice, giving it a fluffy texture unlike jasmine rice normally used in most places. For some peculiar reason when consuming basmati rice, it isn't as heavy compared to other types of white rice. Making it that carb eating experience less of a guilty one. Above all Selera nasi lemak was yummy and feels homey.
Very authentic indo Malay food. The nasi lemak is spicy and full of flavor, just wish the portion was bigger . The satay and rendang curry is another hit
One of the best traditional nasi Lemak you will have the pleasure of eating! I have been coming here since Norma's humble beginnings from her home. Terima Kasih, Norma!
Loved it. This is call real food by Kakak from Singapore. I tried everything they have and I traveled 30minutes just to have her food on my weekend and then on to Costsco. Nasi campur and nasi lemak is my favourite 👅
Definitely worth the trip out east for their Nasi Lemak. This is the real deal, and comes wrapped in a banana leaf with an amazing sambal. Prices are also very reasonable.
A nice, family run restaurant. The chicken satay was very juicy and peanut sauce was fresh. Nasi lemak was also cheap and tasty. Will be back to try other dishes on the future.
We had nasi lemak. Very good and can't beat the price-$6.50. Cheapest place I have been to in Australia! Only drawback menu is limited. We will be back!
I head to Selera Singapore Asli solely for one thing and one thing only, the Almighty Nasi Lemak!
Singapore no. 1 !. The lontong here is the best i tasted in Melbourne. Nasi lemak with sotong is also good.
Don't be turned off by the name. These are cool Singaporeans and they know how to cook.
Outstanding value for money. Awesome big lunch for under $10 OMG.
Nasi Lemak.... WOW
Curry Puffs WOW
Will be back. Quite often I would think.
Service: FAST!
Staff: Short
Food: Amazing
Prices: Outstanding
Authenticity: 8 Sambal Chillis out of 8
Coffee: N/A
Décor: The Food is awesome
It's a village out there. I bought lunch from here every week for some months. The lovely owner is a big part of the authentic homestyle experience, as is the packaging... banana leaves, gravy in a knotted plastic bag. Just amazing flavours. Ask for ideas if you can't see anything you like. I miss this place!
I have been going to this place at least twice a week since 2006. Fantastic food, brilliant value and a little bit of Malaysia right here in Melbourne. Norma the owner is so lovely all my kids call her Aunty :) if you want authentic food that makes you feel like you are eating in KL!
Genuine Malay Food but a Quality Inconsistent. The food is tasty and authentic and made by a oldish Malay woman. But the food is only warmish as everything is served via the bain marie. The quality of the food is also a bit inconsistent. The first time we had the beef, it was tender and soft (albiet only warm) but the 2nd time we went the beef was quite dry and on the tough side.
But overall, it is worth a visit to try it out but don't expect great service. I ordered Nasi Goreng but the lady refused to cook it for me as she was "too busy". So, I had to choose from what was in the brain marie. This made the menu quite limited & a tad overpriced.
On the day you could only order 2 basic meals:
Nasi Lemak $5.50 (rice, ikan bilis, a warm fried egg and very red chilli sauce from a bottle) Add a spoon of beef for $3 extra.
Nasi Campu $10.50. You get rice plus your choice of 3 items - tofu&beans, spinach, beef , 2 types of sotong & chicken drumsticks.
The food we had was tasty enough.
Great authentic food. This place serves genuine Malay food! And no MSG as well.
The sambal petai was fantastic as was the sambal ikan bilis.
The Nasi lemak was very good value at $5.50
The Chicken briyani at $9 was also great value - huge piece of chicken...what more, the rice is served on a banana leaf
I would really recommend this place. Only drawback is that is is so far away!
Great place.. Love this little family run place. Their Nasi Lemak is very authentic and at only $5 a pop... completely worth it! Rice isn't my favourite, though it is because of my preference rather than their cooking.
Love their choice of dishes, especially the jackfruit, although they only make this on special occasions. Also love the smelly beans and fish bait (ikan billis petai).
Their made to order is also good. Their version of Laksa is unique, with sardines and thick, chewy rice noodles. Not assam laksa. Yummy but different.
I absolutely adore their longtong! Favourite!!!!
Their teh tarik is good but not tariked enough.
Authentic food but service needs improvement. Very nice authentic food but service was very ordinary.
Loved the nasi lemak with sotong there. Has the feel of a nasi lemak gerai when picking what you want in your dish. I will be back to try other dishes.
Cheap, cheerful, delicious. With lino floor, cheap decor and the menu written up on a huge chalkboard up the back, this venue is not somewhere for a romantic intimate dinner for two.
What you do get is lovely authentic Malay food (not Chinese-Malay or Indian-Malay), a view over the sunken kitchen area and fast service at a great price.
This place has bigger kitchen than the seating area. You can actually see the kitchen & everything which was lower than the seating area. When we came on Sunday noon it was busy, and they seem to only have 2 staff which made them look stressed trying to keep up with things. Not surprising when you ask for little things (glasses , a bottle of water), they might take a while because they are too busy and sometimes forget. The place is old but the way the kitchen laid out, it somehow reminds me of grandma’s house. But if you aren’t used to Asian culture, this might not be appealing to you. You can either buy nasi campur where you can choose 3 dishes from the already cooked bar, or get meals freshly cooked. The menu itself isnt big, and of course very traditional Malaysian. I tried their nasi campur because I wanna try their little dishes. I ended up with their pippies curry, fried chicken and veggie curry. I love their fried chicken, it was tasty and moist inside, just perfectly cooked and seasoned. The pippies curry and veggie curry were mild tasting. They said the pippies curry is spicy but it’s super mild. I feel they watered it down to cater for people here which was rather disappointing. Their sambal was hot though, although not my favourite flavour-wise. Also tried their roti which was nice. Overall it was a cheap lunch, only about $15 per person. Will come back here because I love the Asian waroeng atmosphere.
Typical mamak place , all dishes cooked by one person , who also served us today
Such a variety of different curries etc with rice.
The curry puffs excellent also 2 types of kueh, the dadar was the best.
My favorite place when I miss singapore food. Been here for almost 20 years. Highly recommend. 😍
Very authentic and simple Singaporean Malay food. The nasi lemak and the ikan bakar are delicious. The ikan bakar is very spicy and made with stingray.
The price is also very cheap and reasonable.
The chef is very friendly and has been in Melbourne for 20 years and she has been running this shop for 17 years.
For parking, note that you can drive behind the shops for more parking spots.
They offer a wide range of Authentic Malaysian Food! And when I say authentic it's home style cooking. Nasi Lemak is packed and wrapped with banana leave. It's so aromatic it honestly brings back school days memories and it's very comforting.
The aunty that owns this place, Aunty Normah she is so hospitable and friendly. I would recommend the nasi lemak (my all time fav) with otak otak!
They usually sell Ikan bakar but due to covid she's not offering it. It will be back next year 🤞🏽 but that's another dish to die for! Love this place! Always consistent and fresh! Unlike any Malaysian restaurants I've tried 😉
Selera Singapore is an amazing stop for nasi lemak lovers. The sambal has authentic malay flavours, not your typical sweet spicy sambal. There’s also a wide variety of sides to choose from - curry chicken, beef rendang, fish curry and many more! If you’re in the area, I highly recommend giving this place a go and support your local restaurant. The makcik here is funny and friendly too!
Authentic Malaysian food with a down-to-earth atmosphere. The cook is a nice lady! I got the Nasi Lemak, which was decent. It may be hard to get parking right outside so drive a little further down to park at Glen Valley Road.
