Review Two Rubens - Fremantle

Christoph Sawyer
Very cute/homey cafe with delicious fresh food and kind/attentive service. Quiet and quaint. Perfect place to enjoy a calm/quiet meal or place to work (w/ decent free WiFi). Highly recommend! They do have tables outside (street side) and setting inside their courtyard (currently under renovation). #cute #quiet #cosy #homey #quaint #cafe #breakfast #alldaybreakfast #lunch #vegan #sandwich #outdoor

Well built sandwiches with tasty ingredients. When I asked about gluten free the server asked if it was gluten intolerance and I said coeliac she instructed the chef to clean everything down, so very good on avoiding cross contamination. And the Club Sandwich was delicious and had very nice gf whole grain bread, not the usual blotting paper. Coffee was excellent and they were able to tell me their cappacino topping was gluten free too, not all places have the packaging available or are willing to take the time.

This is my favorite place to stop buy at lunch for a lovely chat with the girls and a white hot chocolate. As soon as I walk in they always greet me with happy hello and already know what I want. Love this place!

The kitchen was already closed when we got there but the staff welcomed us to get a table and have some coffee. Cosy place and tasty coffee...worked for me.

As soon as I walked in I was greeted by smiling staff who were very welcoming. The atmosphere is very hip - very Fremantle. There was an awesome variety of food and what we ordered ( I had the chicken and Camembert sliders) was amazing. Quick service. Good coffee. Couldn't ask for anything more. Will definitely be coming back.

Walked in for breakfast (was not sure where to eat as it was very early in the morning) and children loved the place! Ordered scrambled eggs for myself and our children devoured it all! They also loved the hot chocolate too! Nice, comfortable, honely decor. Staff were warm and friendly made our breakfast experience really wonderfu:) Keep it up two Rubens! Two thumbs up!

Would give this zero if we could. Coffee took 20 minutes with 12 people in the whole cafe. Was asked if we ordered something 3 times when a staff member was trying to bring meals out. Staff under the pump, probably because they are all under 15. Forgot 2 menu items as part of our meals. Plates left out for ages = flies everywhere. Very dissapointed as all the reviews are great.

True triple threat - amazing food, great coffee and incredible staff. Friendly and fast even under pressure on a busy first day of 2019. Thank you very much for an awesome first breakfast of the year!

Two Rubens for Tapas on a Saturday night did not disappoint!! Go for the Chefs Choice for $45 per person, the food is delicious and the service is awesome! We will be telling our friends and we will be back!

Best homemade granola I’ve had in a long time :0 not to mention the coffee blend they use ,quiet easy drinking but still with plenty of a kick ❤️

After passing this place a couple of times, i decided to give it a go with lunch. Its dog friendly with decent outdoor seating. Staffs are very friendly. A lot of different sandwich and wrap options. And also basic breakfast choices too. I had the moroccan chicken sandwich. And i didnt like it. It lacked flavour, overly sweet and plain.
My friend had the ruben sandwich and thought it was decent, nothing over the top. I had a strawberry, watermelon juice which i enjoyed. Felt there is room for improvement.

Cute little dog friendly cafe. Service was good, friendly staff, nice coffee, but the breakfast itself was disappointing. I had the Ruben breakfast which sounded promising on the menu but the food that was served was not. We asked for sourdough bread but was given very airy bordering stale bread which was dry (no butter), poached eggs were done well, although they had a very vinegary taste. Avocado looked like the ready made kind you get in the supermarket, small amount served in a dish, tiny bits of feta on a side salad, 2 halves tomato’s and some bacon. My partner had Spanish scrambled eggs, again the bread was dry, airy and stale, served with scrambled egg that had a chorizo and raw spinach on the side. Overall it was ok, nothing to write home about unfortunately. If only the food matched the inviting courtyard and friendly staff. Probably won’t go again. Sorry 😔
Buon Gusto
Great breakfast slow service. We finished our coffee way before our breakfast arrived. Overall good food and worth the visit. Bake beans were home made.

This is what I call a 'treasure place'😍 Family owned café, we were served by the owner herself, on essex street! Decor was beautiful- little eccentric with well thought details which is always better- and she told us a little bit about the building's history.
We took two flat whites, ☕️oh my very good, then we split a homemade veggie pastry and a veggie frittata! Savory and delicious.
We loved the cozy feeling- you could hear the dishes cling, people chattering and the staff laughing ☀️☕️
Jason
I popped in here last week for a takeaway coffee, and I think that $6 for a large flat white is a little expensive. I wouldn't have minded as much if it tasted nice, but it tasted like hot milk as there wasn't enough coffee in the cup. I was very disappointed and probably won't be back.
SweetPoison
Wow. So disappointed. I loved this place last time I came. Won't be returning. Tried to order the granola and then a plate of my usual sides. Was told I couldn't order sides and needed to order toast. Mentioned my coeliacs and the owner gave me a spill about profit coming from bread. Made me show her how I would calculate the sides (pretty freaking obvious) -so rude. Profit comes from regular customers and word of mouth.
I mentioned it wasn't an issue last time I came - but she said they were new owners (shame)
Couldn't be bothered arguing or paying for bread which I can't eat.... so I left. Blergh. Left a bad taste in my mouth. Coeliacs isn't a choice and I shouldn't have to pay for it anymore then I do.

- old review when different owners-
Service lovely. Coffee came out prompt and hot. Accomodating to my usual side orders. Did I mention service was lovely? Eggs were cooked perfectly! No complaints at all. Nice atmosphere and plenty of seating.highly recommend.

Freoman
Lovely courtyard full of old memories and a sense of separation from the world. Standard food and drink with all of the usual Freo fare available. Coffee was ok but I bit milky for my tastes.

I used to come here a lot before it changed hands. I love their outside courtyard and the verandah out front for people watching. Decided to give it a try for Friday brekkie, and ordered the eggs benedict with ham and a long Mac topped up at the counter. I sat inside in the front room, and my brekkie and coffee didn’t take too long to arrive. Food was good and nicely presented. Coffee was excellent; strong and hot. Staff were friendly and I think I can safely say that I will be coming back to enjoy the rest of their menu.
Lauren Clarke
Just had a delicious Moroccan chicken salad and a long macc topped up. Both delicious and a great price. I sat out the back in the rear room that looks out onto the courtyard. Good high chairs and a bucket of toys for kids if they need it.
Elisaines
Excellent service and really nice breakfast! Lovely place :-)
We had full vegetarian and Spanish breakfast, good portions and very nice coffee.
Dingodean
Today we sat in the courtyard at the rear of the building and had a Bacon, egg and relish toastie, a chicken cheese and mustard toastie and the Bunny Chow special along with a short Macciato, flat white and a long black. All of the food was nicely cooked, service was friendly and efficient. All in all this was a lovely experience and we will be back.

only popped in for takeaway coffees, had a soy cap which was great, perfect temp, flavourful, smooth, none of that lumpy split soy milk. partner had a regular cap and it was also delicious.. their selection of muffins and cakes looked really tempting, as did the food that people at the tables were eating. too bad we were in a rush this time but will be back to try some eats with their tasty coffee (:

Two Reuben's is one of my favorites for breakfast.
It never disappoints. The staff are always cheerful and the place has a peaceful feel to it. The avocado smash is yum, but my favourite here is their delicious Eggs Benedict. Soooo good!
Catherine
Went to Two Rubens this morning with some friends who recommended it and was pretty disappointed in my experience. Some of the staff were friendly, others looked like they were having a really bad day. I ordered the muesli with chia seeds and fresh fruit; the muesli was about 30% raisins, there were no chia seeds, and it had peel... not a very nice muesli. My friends ordered something with poached eggs and both of their eggs were overcooked like a hard boiled egg. My friend who ordered the latte was disappointed it was half froth. My tea was nice. I don't think this is a cafe i will return to.

We went to Two Rubens a few weeks ago for a Sunday lunch. It was a very enjoyable and laid back atmosphere without any fuss or pretence. The fare was hearty home-style food which was nicely presented and satisfying. The coffees were delicious and we would have no hesitation in going back for more.

A lovely little place with a nice courtyard at the back. Limited breakfast menu with not really friendly staff. Don't think the chef have any idea with food. Just do it and serve.
Happymuncher
Decent breakfast and bacon cooked to perfection. The customer service was fantastic and the overall atmosphere welcoming. It was great for Sunday breakfast:)

Downside: mocha didn't taste like a mocha, more like a bland hot chocolate. But my overall experience was great:)
The Urban Bento
I love how warm the service is here! You get greeted like an old friend. Coffee is great too. The breakfasts are run-of-the-mill but nothing outstanding. The poached egg was overcooked (no lovely runny yolks) sadly. Will be back though for the service and coffee at the least... and maybe give lunch a go!
Carol Boucher Bicknell
We went here for breakfast on a Scoupon voucher. Beautiful food and fantastic friendly service. The only negative was that my poached eggs were overcooked otherwise I would have rated it a 5! Highly recommended and we will definitely be back.

Went here for lunch with the family on a Scoopon deal and here's how it went:

FOOD: We had the following 1/ Big breakfast: big and tasty.....yum. 2/ Chicken Salad: good size, beautiful chicken and nice salad...yum again. 3/ Tandori Chicken Panini: serving size medium, taste was very good. 4/ Ham and cheese toasted sandwich: beautiful, good size, lots of butter....mmm

SERVICE: Fantastic and friendly.

AMBIANCE: It has a rear courtyard that makes you feel like your in Europe.

OVERALL: Fantastic, we'll be back

THE EGGGGS.
THE COFFEEE.
this place is pretty chilled, the environment is inviting and relaxed. Quick service and beautiful outcome. I normally go to a familiar place for breakfast. But decided to come here. I ordered a breakfast similar to a big breakfast. I usually get poached eggs but it felt like a scrambled kinda day. Nervous to see the final product. I dip my fork into the perfectly portioned eggs.. It enters my mouth and I felt like my life had just begun. Each mouthful better then the next.
I would never send back a coffee and would never complain and surely I didn't have to this time. I am a soy consumer and two Rubens nailed it.
Good job guys
Yum
We stopped in for lunch before we went to the movies. We had the BLT which was very good. It came out in good time and the service was friendly. We finished with a cappuccino each. This is a good lunch spot. Can recommend.
J-in-Perth
This is such a lovely place! The people are friendly & I like the decor, the food & the coffee. Seriously, ticks all the boxes!
I had the granola & hubby had the homemade beans & chorizo on toast. Both were really tasty & the prices were surprisingly cheap. Highly recommended.
Trent Steven
I love coming here for breakfast, the food is modest, fresh and delicious, lots of vego options and an awesome atmosphere. The owner is always tottering about making sure his customers are happy, you can see the guy is really dedicated. In saying that, all the staff are great.

I really love the mushroom dish, but even just eggs on toast seems to be awesome here.

Sitting out on the street of freo provides a great opportunity for people watching and soaking up the sun on a spring day. Highly recommend it.
Mike
Nice courtyard out back. Food wasn't great. Generic factory hollandaise sauce. Mushrooms and toast weren't cooked properly. Staff recooked mushrooms but they weren't very tasty anyway. Didn't bother trying the coffee.
Sam
This place does the best breakfast! It is our number 1 choice in freo for breakfast. The "full breaky" is delicious and the staff are always friendly.
Gemima
Wow. What can I say, I almost feel embarrassed for this establishment. The atmosphere and fit out was great, but once our food was served it was evident they have no idea what is classified as being edible. I'm glad I mentioned to the staff that our experience was bad as they did refund $$.

I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled across the humble Two Reuben's this morning. Great atmosphere-maintains the quaint and artsy Fremantle image while still being clean and comfortable. I was welcomed into the transformed Freo home and served promptly by the friendly barista who can make one hell of a latte. My mug cost $4.80 but was definetly worth it. No latte art but hey when it tastes that creamy and good who needs the decorative fuss. 3 shots to keep me buzzing all day. Good looking and reasonably priced food to. Can't wait to return
Lauren Rae
Great service and great food! Cozy vibe and tasty coffee- very creamy and smooth! If you're looking for a friendly place this is for you!! :)

Would you like a side of 'attitude' with that?. No, I did not order a side of attitude with my breakfast, wish I could send it back to the kitchen and ask for a refund instead. Saw the lovely photos on urbanspoon and decided to give this place a go yesterday morning before we headed to freo markets.

Agreed with Graham's post, I ordered 2 poached eggs on rye toast (I got 2 slices, toasted) with a side of mushrooms which also came out with a 'garnish' of limp rocket leaves.. And no butter. When my bf kindly asked the waitress for some butter to go with my toast, she gave him a big reaction (best described as shock horror) as if he'd asked her for tomato sauce to go with our coffees. Shouldn't have bothered anyway since our food was served to us cold. Food and drinks took a little while to arrive too.

Commend the barista of the day though, she was lovely and served our coffees in a takeaway cup with a smile :) Coffees were very nice! No burnt aftertaste detected and notbmany places can make a skinny flat white tase creamy..Thank you, Miss Barista, you've made our visit somewhat more bearable. And the bf enjoyed his Eggs Benny, despite one of the poached eggs being overcooked.

Best Coffee and Service in Freo. Two Rubens is my favourite coffee shop in Freo, as a Soy Long Mac drinker - I find a lot of coffee in Perth as "Hit and Miss" - but not Two Rubens it is always creamy and delish!

Coffee. The best coffee I had in WA!
Graham
First visit in a while, had many good experiences previously, however things seem to have changed for the worse. Two poached eggs on a single dry stale slice of bread (not toast) without butter and a limp salad by the side??? Not really what I was expecting. Hope things get sorted soon. Coffee was still great and a lovely setting.

Great Coffee. A cool, funky vibe, which is what I have come to expect of Fremantle, this place has great coffee, great service and one of the best breakfasts I have had. The big breakfast was shared by my partner and I, as we are not huge eaters and thoroghly enjoyed. Keep it up. A gem in the heart of Freo.
Cat Food
Nice coffee and service. Went there for breakfast today and had the eggs with avocado and a cappuccino for $18. It was really good. Eggs were cooked perfectly on my meal, but my boyfriend's poached eggs were hard in the middle on his full breakfast.

A good vibe and the coffee was great.

Delicious food - fresh, high quality ingredients and fantastic relaxed atmosphere, wonderful!

Daily coffee run. There are so many reason's why this coffee shop is our office favourite. The smiles that greet you as soon as you step foot in the door and the smile that you take with you because the coffee is made to perfection every time.
Thank you Two Rubens Team, you keep our office going strong!

Awesome Coffee!. Was nearly passed out from the heat staff got me water and caffeine fix. Coffee was yum and the atmosphere chill. Will try their food next time looking foward to it! Recommend for relief from the busy streets nearby.

A beautiful spot in Freo. This new restaurant in an old house in Essex Street serves the most delicious meals and cakes, high quality coffee, with excellent and friendly service.

This is when you learn to not judge a book by its cover! I've always walked passed this 'house' not knowing the gem that it is on the inside. Great vibe! Perfect place for a small group of friends to hang out. It feels very home-y :) the menu and the place is just so interestingly creative.

Five stars for the two Rubins. Please check out this quirky restaurant it is spot on for the whole dining experience
casual little rooms don't reveal the quality of the food and coffee that your about to experience the eggs benedict would be close to the best in wa paired with great coffee and a great breakfast is assured , my partners scrambled eggs was also top notch and the spicy home made baked beans were a triumph, will now check out the dinner menu

Delish coffee in a cozy corner of Freo. Awesome little hidden oasis with creamy coffee and a great breakfast. Love sitting here and watching Freo go by.

BEST BREAKFAST EVER!!!. Wow food delicious friendly staff great place ! Love it

A bit pricey (I'm not a fan of paying $15 for brekky) but the food was great and filling. A bit dingy but I guess it has character. Good coffee.
Alan
Great friendly people. Always love parking motorcycle across road and going for my coffee and breakfast. just love the atmosphere as well

Very very dissapointing experience. Waited 40mins for our 2 breakfasts. Lady who took out order did not get back to us after we asked her to check the order. When it finally arrived it tasted mediorcre. When we told them how long we waited. She gave us a lame excuse that they were busy. But we noticed that they werent! We were hoping for a better experience but cant say we did . Wont recommend this place.

Great coffee good price.

Went for Saturday breakfast greeted By Very friendly laid back staff. Has a nice secluded outdoor area to enjoy the beautiful weather. Wasn't super busy so food and coffee was almost instantly brought out! The house granola was delicious with a good selection of fruits and nuts. Also had the Avo delight which I highly recommend which had poached eggs and grilled tomato with feta on sour dough bread! The avocado had a different taste but a good different, it made the meal! Foosball was a good touch too for a bit of fun

My husband and I had the salmon benedict today. Delicious and very authentic tasting. Very well priced for what you get. Staff very friendly. I also appreciate the quirkiness of this place particularly the mismatched herb garden out back. Just do a bit of housekeeping like fixing some broken tables etc and this place will be perfect.
Gabriela Olekszyk
Great chai. We've head a really nice breakfast there, I wasn't that hungry so i was happy to find they had 5 dollar toasties in the menu :) chai tea was amazing. nice atmosphere, alright prices
FeedMe
My New Favourite. I love this place! I stumbled upon it by accident, and had the most amazing vegetarian breakfast here! The coffee was great, the food was amazing and the atmosphere was so relaxing and very homely.

Went there today for a big breaky and all I can say is the scrambled eggs were the best I've ever tasted yum :)
OnePointFive
Utterly disappointed. Very limited options. Taste ok, but presentation was poor.
The Hungry Dietitian
Great breakfast spot. So happy to get a decent coffee in Freo. Sat in the sunny courtyard out the back and ordered breakfast. Very happy with the food and the price. Friendly staff
Jetts Grub
We know why they call it two Rubens? There must be only two working.

Sunday breakfast at 1130 and took 35 minutes for it to arrive. No busy. Meal very average no flare and if not hungry would have returned.

Very average
Milandro
Quaint little place, cruise decor and a really good flat white!
Macfish Notes
Discovered this place looking for breakfast in Freo. It's a pleasant European-style spot where you can pause to gather your thoughts before heading out to a hectic day. Really enjoyed the friendly, unobtrusive service, ham and cheese croissant and flat white in the rear courtyard. Be back soon. Merci pour le petit déjeuner!
Paul Derricott
Great food (perfect poached eggs) good coffee and reasonable price. No table service which I don't like and the service was a bit cold.... but all in all a really nice cafe.
FrankieT
This place is great! Different, unique, warm & friendly. The prices are good too compared to so many other places in fremantle and the food is yum diddily yum. Coffee is also one of the best in town I think! Also - if you like your music, then they always playing some great tunes.
Karma Crush
Sadly disappointing. This cafe's previous incarnation, Fidel's, served up the most fantastic crepes. Two Rubens does not. The coffee was barely drinkable this morning. Very disappointing as they have so much potential.

Glad to have discovered this little gem , best house granola ever had !

Truly amazing. Great cafe right off the main rd in Freo.. Nice cozy feel and relaxed atmosphere.. Great staff who knows what they are doing and happy to have a chat.. Ordered the Avo Delight which is a must try.. The wife ordered the veggie brekky which was great too.. The portions are big and the coffee was the best ive had in WA.. My favorite cafe when stopping in Freo

A nice hideaway!. Head out to the back courtyard for a nice hideaway from the heat and bustle of Freo. There's a large table under the grape vines which would be perfect for a small group meeting or a study session. Inside you'll find lots of nooks in which to catch up with friends and linger over a cup of Five Senses coffee.

The pasta night on Fridays sounds great - can't wait to check it out :)
El_Duderino
Just had brekkie here and it was lovely. The big breakfast with everything was huge but great for soaking up last nights cocktails. The Avo plate had a tiny hint of cumin - perfect for the morning, not too much. Great pancakes, coffee and smiley staff. Fidels started to go downhill a little, hopefully these guys will make improvements and so far it looks good, can't wait to try dinner.

I ordered Two Rubens B.L.T. ($8): turkish panini with bacon, house-made mayo, tomatoe and roquette, while Grace chose the bocconcinni and basil toasty ($6). For coffee, Grace had two shots of espresso ($3), and I went with my usual skinny latte ($3.9). Satisfied by our brunch picks...
Take Me To Foodie Heaven
To start off, I had the Pantera Rosa juice ($7.50) which is a mix of watermelon, strawberry, apple mint and lemon. It was a very nice and refreshing drink to start off the day. Pantera Rosa Juice Dad had the Rubens ($15) which consists of either poached or scrambled eggs, short cut bacon, avocado, rocket, bulgarian goat cheese with balsamic reduction and buttered ciabatta. Dad enjoyed his dish and thought that it was really delicious and fresh in flavour. Rubens Mum had the Full Brekky ($18), consisting of a choice of poached or scrambled eggs, short cut bacon, house beans, grilled spicy chorizo, lemon and rocket, frilled cherry tomatoes and buttered ciabatta. The full brekky was full of flavour. The eggs were poached perfectl
