Review Chalky's Espresso Bar - Fremantle

Coffee is pretty good. Food wa fine but doesn't knock my socks off. Pork hock was decent. Corn fritters are basically doughy pancakes with corn in them. Poached eggs were over done and not runny at all. Both meals were under seasoned. Good presentation. See photos. Nice atmosphere. Service was good. I wish I could give it 5 stars but the food is really only 4 star quality.

It was a Monday. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and my stomach was rumbling. I had recently started a new diet and I was desperate for good clean food. I had known about Chalkys for a while and finally decided to pay them a visit. I arrived to a warm welcome with smiles all around. I was at home. I ordered what I now call "The World Famous Poke Bowl With Chicken". When the bowl of deliciousness arrived, my mouth started watering so bad, I almost needed a replacement shirt. This bowl of pure goodness made my day!. Do yourself a favour and go get one! If you want to spice it up a bit, they have many hot sauce options to choose from!. Welcome to the world of pure joy! I will see you all there.

Coffee was perfect. Service was great. Food was good šŸ‘ had scrambled eggs on ciabatta and bacon. Worth the visit.

Lovely atmosphere, very friendly and attentive staff. Coffee and food came out quickly and both were very tasty. I would recommend this place to everyone :)

Incredibly generous portions and amazingly delicious. Worth a breakfast stop. The paprika aioli on my bacon burger was divine!

Wow!!! Does this place make some amazing coffee šŸ¤© The decor is so unique and provided for a comfortable dining experience! The staff are extremely professional, punctual, and really know how to make you feel well looked after! Absolutely not a let down in the price point of the food, options or quality area either! Chalkys is a minute walk from Fremantleā€™s Roundhouse and Batherā€™s Bay, and makes for a really lovely breakfast/ brunch or lunch time experience!

Most amazing delicious pancakes, so soft and fluffy. Also wonderful service, everyone was so friendly, made my day

Our go to place for eggs benedict - best eggs benny we ever had in Perth/Fremantle. Very reasonably priced too. The place is always very busy and it takes a while for girls to collect orders/serve meals. On our last visit we took a seat and had to wait about 20 minutes until our order was collected. Thatā€™s one thing that requires improvement.

Coffee was really good! We had a cold brew, my first one and I loved it. Their iced chai latte was so fragrant and full of yummy flavours, best mocha I have tasted, again full of flavour with the coffee being the star which in my humble opinion is as it should be. My little dude loved his iced chocolate and The turmeric latte was a winner! The service was awesome, very helpful and friendly. Well worth a visit, well worth 5 stars and well worth a return visit šŸ˜ŠšŸ‘ŒšŸ»

Chalky's never fails to impress me with their creative and fresh menu... From the very first time I've tasted muesli like no other to their mushroom, hollandaise and eggs dish and today the sausage n cider dish, they always please the palate and the soul. Awesome interiors, as well as staff who are friendly.. Definitely a destination to add on any to go to list!

Honestly their Pork Hock breakfast was a piece of art, so much food, great flavours all for a lazy $20. The other meal was the corn fritters and home cured salmon. Again, lovely presentation, a healthy portion, and great flavours. Coffee is well done, maybe not the best ever, but coffee is a very subjective product. I'd give it an easy 7/10 ... I'm going back to try a lunch much sooner than later.

Great service and beautiful food :) tried the signature dish The Hock, the flavours were amazing and the presentation great too. I didn't know this gem was here but it definitely won't be my last visit now that I know it is :D

Very friendly staff, great food and efficient service. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting a great feed in Freo

Dropped in on a cold rainy day to find the place almost full (it was Sunday about 9:30am so only to be expected). They found a place for us and we enjoyed the warmth while they brought out the coffee. There was a little wait for the food but only because the place was packed.<br/><br/>The chili scrambled eggs with bacon were lovely. Light but with flavor. The ciabatta toast was ok. The coffee was nice and not as milky as some. I prefer it to be stronger but forgot to ask.<br/>

Keep up the great work. Great breakfast good size servings, friendly staff and very attentive to needs. Coffees also great. Can not fault and highly recommend.

One of the best breakys Iā€™ve had! great coffee. The dogs sat outside in the winter sun šŸ¶šŸ¶ Super friendly staff too! My pic is of the corn fritters add bacon

Wonderful place, I wished I had discovered Chalkyā€™s earlier! Itā€™s great to eat breakfast at a place that doesnā€™t just dish out what you can make at home. Big servings, fresh produce , interesting and delicious options and great service. We ordered the pancakes for my 5 year old and upon arrival I noticed some nuts- this wasnā€™t mentioned in the ingredients list but I should have said something too. Without any issue, these were freshly replaced (and the kidā€™s size was massive as well). This is a place where you can bring the family, not worry about making a bit of noise, and just enjoy yourself with parking right next it. Loved it!

Nice location, not in the centre of freo. Signs said table service so we waited, and waited. Ordered the truffle eggs. Dissapointed with meal, was burnt bread, scrambled eggs, 5 small mushrooms and lots of rocket drowned in truffle oil topped with breadcrumbs. Eggs had no flavour aside from the top layer with the truffle oil. Coffee was cold and had too much milk. Went to pay at the end and the staff person was not interested at all, blunt and unfriendly. Not in a hurry to go back which is a shame because I went a few years ago and had a great experience.

A cute little cafe, great customer service, Ordered the Slab & Cider w bacon, poached egg, ciabatta toast, baby spinach, apple cider onions & recap manis was a big serving, fresh & hot, the coffee is amazing, i even ordered one to go

ā™”ā™”ā™” Freaking loved everything ! ā™”ā™”ā™” Eggs perfect and coffee brill. I would recommend everyone take the time to visit. I cannot stress this enough in 140 or more characters.<br/>
LittleGirlBigFood
Such cheap and great coffee! Really happy with it! I love the collection of hot sauces that one can choose from also. Right in the East End of Fremantle this cafe delights.
I.live.to.eat
love that the default eggs benny on the menu comes with prosciutto, rocket, as well as asparagus. hollandaise was one of the best iā€™ve had around perth. asked for eggs to be done super runny; unfortunately they were overdone and not actually that runny :( service wasnā€™t super friendly but nothing wrong there. didnā€™t get any coffees here so canā€™t comment on that. eggs benny was a tad expensive at $21, but would probably come back eventually for the eggs benny because of that sauce. breakfast wrap ($9) was average though.
Logan Adamson
was a delightful breakfast with great coffee and quick service, a quaint location with a new age atmosphere, would definitely recommend this hidden away gem
Melimelo3
excellent service. table service with seating inside and outside. staff were very friendly and helpful. o got oats (minus cranberries and banana on the side, my own pickiness) which were amazing. so yummm. my partner had the famous hock. another dish polished off and made to perfection. overall awesome little cafe.
Kenneth Milling
One of the best cafes in fremantle and certainly the best coffee. Also, they provide creative and tasty dishes on their menu with healthy options. As a bonus they are dog friendly!
Tahina Smith
Had breakfast here the other day and the coffee was amazing! My boyfriend got the eggs benedict which was delicious. I got the Avo smash and as I'm pregnant I asked for the eggs to be really well cooked and unfortunately they were still quite runny so I didn't eat the eggs- which made my breakfast a little disappointing! <br/>Overall it was a lovely place for a morning coffee and feed before work/uni.
Bite Into It
The customer service is beyond excellent in this place. They really make you feel comfortable, striking up conversations with all of the customers. You rarely would find that anywhere now days.

We spotted this gem by accident and it now will be a go-to for us whenever we are in Fremantle. We were there for brunch on a Saturday and although most of the tables were occupied, our party of 4 found refuge on the large high table next to another couple. Two of us ordered 'The Hock' which included potato gratin, shredded pork hock, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. My mate mumbled half-way through his plate that ā€˜this is the best brekky Iā€™ve had in a bloody long timeā€™ and I tended to agree with him. By the name of the dish ā€˜The Hockā€™ I expected a dish looking like a Vikingā€™sĀ  last supper but it was more on the dainty side with two cubes of gratin flanking the shredded hock and the poached eggs perched like Olympic medallists on the gratin podium. The hollandaise sauce wasnā€™t drowning the rest of the dish, the pork was succulent as it should be, the eggs were cooked perfectly and the gratin had a hint of garlic to compliment the potato. Another one of our party had bacon and scrambled eggs which was a HUGE serve and the health-conscious member of our group and rye bread with ricotta and rhubarb.Ā  Whilst there was a risk the rhubarb dish might be overly sweet, the report was that it had great balance with the ricotta rounding off the tartness of the rhubarb and a hint of sweetness from the drizzle of sauce. Once we were topped up with a second round of coffees we left content with the promise to return.

I especially liked the staff and atmosphere. They were very welcoming and went out of their way to create a spot in the sun for us. more important to me than food which was ok, too. and location and parking is a plus.
Billylamb
Cute little cafe a bit away from the others in Freo. Pleasant coffee and food in a cafe you don't have to queue for on a weekend morning! Some inventive items on the menu too.
Kat Gibson
Just go there! Recommended plus. No breaky cocktails though amazing menu, great staff and strong coffee. Try The Hock, it sings in your tummy. A definite go to if in Freo :)
Clifford
Good location, al fresco seating, friendly staff, good coffee. Took us a bit to find the place so the best option is to look for the RoundHouse on High Street.
Naamanslife
Mmmmmm ok. The staff are lovely and the location really pretty. The coffee was acceptable without being amazing. I had a slice that was meant to be warmed up. It arrived cold and burnt black at the bottom, warm at the top which was a bit unpleasant.
AM
Worst dirty chai I have ever tasted. Dirty chai is my favourite coffee and for years I have been drinking it in different coffee shops in Perth with no issues. The dirty chai I had in Chalky's was so bad that I wasn't even able to drink it and when I asked my boyfriend to taste it, he thought that it tasted like curry and agreed that it was not drinkable. His coffee was okay.
Greg
Breakfast visit. Great menu. Fantastic food. Excellent coffee. All round great choice. It's hidden away but worth trying.

Feeling reflective on the freedom we are so privileged to have in Australia, I headed for Chalkyā€™s, with excellent views of the Freo round house. It is truly spectacular especially in the morning with the reflective glow on the limestone. They have options to dine outside, but I headed in doors for the window view. They have friendly table service. I ordered the corn fritters with smashed pea and avocado, salsa, sour cream, rocket, poached eggs and cured salmon, and a long Mac topped up. <br/><br/>Coffee arrived quickly, was hot and strong full bodied flavour. Excellent coffee. The fritters took some time to arrive, and when they did they were a very large portion with two fritters. Flavours were good, and poached eggs were cooked perfectly. I was not able to finish the dish because the portion was a little too large for me, but I did enjoy it. Love this funky Freo cafĆ© with a great view, good coffee and food.
Naomi
Insanely good coffee, always good brekky. <br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/>

First words from all the people, go! "You're putting me on the spot" "Yum, hot" "Fluffy" "I can't think under pressure" "Is this balsamic glaze?"
Karla_mckay
I went to this place last week end and I have to say it was the worst service I've had in a long time. They forgot about my coffee order I had to go ask after everyone before me had already been given there food. I then had to go ask where is my chicken wrap was and it was sitting there on the toaster forgotten about. Going to a cafe you shouldn't be chasing up your food. Not good enough guys
Sonya
Had been unimpressed with Chalky's in the past but glad I gave it another chance! Last few times here our coffees have been perfect (especially my almond milk FW) and the savoury muffins are super tasty. The interior is stylishly industrial in a quiet area of Freo's west-end with lots of outdoor seating...
Cookiecrumble
Great coffee and great atmosphere. Went there in the afternoon on a weekday which had a few customers relaxing and enjoying the outdoor setting. A lovely display of rustic little cakes and sweets plus a surprisingly full brunch menu and yummy sounding salads. The kitchen closes at 2pm during the weekdays so just be mindful of that, I missed out but hopefully be back to try it out. However coffees and cakes were still being served. I settled for a soy flat white which was a little on the foamy side, but really enjoyed the smooth coffee flavour. Cute cafe with lots of personality and friendly staff!

Nice sitting outside in a peaceful heritage town. Great little spot for coffee. Nice atmosphere , average service and average food, but it is still a nice place to visit, so take a look for yourself.
The Perth Brunch Blonde
The food was pleasant, but the same could not be said about the service unfortunately :( Ā They all seemed a bit too cranky for a Sunday afternoon. Ā Still, Chalkys still appeals to me and I wouldn't mind visiting again if I happen to be around the west end of Freo. Ā They've got some interesting menu options there.<br/>Chalkys sits pretty in a quiet corner of Fremantle, away from the hustle and bustle. Ā Images of old transport systems are painted on the walls. Ā Posters of local festivals and performances are plastered on the pillars. Ā It is a hipster-type cafe with quirky, industrial-like but chic decor.
Thomas Flynn
A nice relaxing place where you can eat your breakfast without too much fuss or people. Went on a Sunday morning about 9am and there were no queues and seats available which can't be said for most breakfast places in Freo. Coffee order was taken first and received this within 5mims while we were looking at the breakfast menu. The coffee was good and the menu different to other places which was good. We got the Hock and the sausages and cider options. Was quite different and quite tasteful. Price was the norm also. Service was good and good came out fast. Would recommend this place for breakfast!
Vero
Food is good but doesnt worth it because somehow the portion is quite small. Waitress has attitute problem and very rude. Not friendly at all.
Bellygood
Love the coffee here I visited twice in a day! Great friendly barista and quick service. Only odd thing was having all the furniture around us getting cleared (we were sitting outside) just after 3pm when there were still quite a few people sitting in the cafe having coffee as well.
Mikaela Knight
There is a solid flow of people into Chalky's on a Saturday morning. My large latte was served within 5 minutes so can't complain. The hip Freo barista was nice enough but seemed like he was just waking up. The staff warmed up the longer I stayed. The atmosphere is lacking when compared to other Freo cafes. It is a bit noisy and they use a radio station for music which in my opinion downgrades the atmosphere. It is like a diluted hipster cafe-keeping your mainstream elements to attract an older crowd. Since the coffee was overpriced and not amazing I wouldn't go there again however that pork eggs Benedict did look tempting.
Kate T
I have been to Chalkys a number of times for either coffee or a meal. It has always been good and is a lovely little spot. However today I went in and got served by a staff member who was not pleasant to deal with in the slightest. Her rude attitude and lack of customer service skills was appalling. Unfortunately dealing with staff like this can often turn customers away and if it was my first time at Chalkys, I would be less than likely to return.
Bec Alosi
A chilled out gem of a cafe. This was on my list when it first opened and i keep coming back whenever i am in town. Friendly staff, excelkent coffee. I recommend their eggs benny (no bread is used so its not a heavy as a typical benny). <br/><br/>Last i was there i ordered their hit pot and added chorizo and holumni. The best.
Bonnie
Went for breakfast here on a Saturday morning. Service was not bad considering it was busy but we had to wait some time for food which eventually came out - lukewarm, sadly. The "poached" pears served with the french toast were underdone and crunchy. Shame! Iced coffees good though and a great vibe to the place!
THE ILLUSIVE FEMME
Hidden away on the corner of High Street, Chalkyā€™s is a happening hipster cafe that you can smell from a mile away. With an extensive brunch menu and delicious coffee, why wouldnā€™t you stop in on your next Freo rumble? I couldnā€™t decide between a few different dishes but salmon won this time. Soft, melt in your mouth polenta, poached eggs and beetroot relish worked perfectly with the smoked salmon, and a dash of hollandaise brought it all together. Two thumbs up from me. The coffee was strong yet smooth and served in bright and beautiful coloured cups, perfect for Instagram and Snapchat adventures. Chalkyā€™s is directly across the road from the Fremantle Round House so make a morning of it!
Brekkyboi
Great service, great coffee and great chicken wraps. Literally, best chicken wraps I have had in my life. The spot is very warming, given it is in the West End of Freo and the size is very comforting, as you are most likely to get a good table anywhere if you're staying for a quick bite

Comments:Ā I really liked the interior and general look of this place. There's some seriously cool artwork on the wall. However, the food tasted pretty average. The best dish would have to be the the hock. I also enjoyed the blondie for dessert. The hock, poached eggs, potato gratin, house-made hollandaise - $20
Maria Garbin
Nice location and nice atmosphere. Hollandaise sauce lacks flavour though - only let down. Other than that the service is great and the eggs fresh!
Jasmyn
Nice atmosphere, very quick service. Coffee okay, food stone cold. Probably wouldn't visit again.

The Long Mac. I went to Chalky's one day with a mate. I wasn't expecting anything out of the ordinary, but little did I know that my life would be changed for the better. I ordered a Loppy, long mac topped up, no sugars...i don't fudge with that. The service I received was excellent. The staff were extremely friendly and kind to me as they took my order. After a 5 minute wait, my coffee was ready. Boom! my tastebuds felt as if they were dancing in a conga line headed towards a silk blanket of smoothness. This was no ordinary coffee, this was nek lev. The coffee was strong, yet still able to hold the smoothness that I look for in a proper coffee. You also cant forget that Chalky's is cheaper than Blink. I could tell that the coffee beans used were of A grade standard. Roasted to perfection. The after effects of the coffee were amazing. I was completely energised and felt ready to attack a bear with my bear hands. They put something special in their coffee. Chalky's
Scarlettddownes
Chalky's Espresso. Terrible service, it took them forever to make our order. It finally arrived, only to find out that half of it had been forgotten. <br/>We raised our concerns, and the waitress rudely talked back to us.<br/>Also found that they don't sell milk shakes, but do iced chocolates?<br/>Overall, not the greatest...

Hollandaise heaven. My father and I visited Chalky's for a late brekkie before touring Fremantle's west end. Tucked at the end of a historic street, the best way to describe its mood is modern and laid-back. Inside it's all timber, painted metal, and gig posters. The staff casually greeted us like friends they saw every day. We sat by the window so that we could peer up at the Round House and both ordered Eggs Benedict. Everything about this dish was on point - the fat slices of wholemeal toast, perfectly poached eggs, prosciutto, amazing house-made sauce, the sweet sprigs of asparagus on top. This was the Pope of all Benedicts. The coffee was gorgeous, as well; their house blend in my breakfast latte tasted of dark chocolate and nutmeg. For me it's high on the list of western Freo's many charms, and by the time we were leaving I was already planning how quickly I could return.

From Studio 11 to this...... We had been up at the Bathers Beach Art Precinct's Studio 11. We had just come from a Meditation session led by the renowned Free Spirited Tracy Wilkinson of Trace Elements. We were calm and relaxed as one would expect coming out of a meditation class. Tracy invited us down for a cup of coffee and maybe a bite to eat down at the corner coffee store just across the rail tracks called "Chalky's". Great we thought, lets go.<br/><br/>I was sitting outside looking at the menu for what I might like to eat with my wife, Tracy and Tracy's husband. The lady serving us dropped off the little menus that looked a little tatty... but in a good way... ;-) I noticed the little corner store coffee shop had the New Zealand drinks made by Phoenix so I asked if they have the energy drink that Phoenix made. (I don't drink coffee) "No... we make coffee here, you can have one of those if you like" was the abrupt reply. I get that I am one of the few people on the planet that cant stand the taste of coffee, but I didn't want a coffee, so I gave that a miss and stuck to the water. It wasn't the content of what she said... but the body language and the tone.... that was something else.<br/><br/>I then read through the menu and didn't really see anything I liked, so I asked the waitress that was taking our orders if she could recommend anything that tasted a bit like a BLT... as I felt like one of those. The waitress promptly picks up the menu flicks back to the front page and says... "No we have what's on the menu... read it" Honestly... it was just plane rude what she said and did... and within a few seconds she knew it herself.<br/><br/>I didn't feel like ordering anything after that so I didn't... I just drank the water whilst our friends who had already ordered got their meals. We got that stuff eaten pretty fast and we left. <br/><br/>A new girl started her shift and she was just lovely, she cleared our plates and made small talk... nice right?. When she was at the register I went and paid for what my friends and my wife ate... only just as I got to the front of the line... you wouldn't believe it... but the rude waitress was new serving. Actually... to her credit she did apologise for her outburst and then said she was just having a bad day.... then again so was the girl making the coffees.<br/><br/>I'll be back up to Studio 11 in the bathers Beach Art precinct for another meditation session with the renowned Tracy of Trace Elements... but I don't think I'll be back here. Pity... it was very handy and close.

Brilliant coffee, yummy breakfast, super dog friendly! Great cafe. Wish I lived in Perth so it could be my local. They are open Sunday so don't be misled by Urbanspoon and miss out like I nearly did!
DoinKerS
The Hock!. Perfect poached eggs, awesomely moist braised pork, potato and artichoke gratin with good coffee... what more can you ask for? perhaps one of the staff could be a bit more friendlier and smile a bit
Glen
Families not welcome. Like others here, we rolled up looking forward to a good breakfast but we were blatantly told families weren't welcome with no high chairs. A lousy attitude
Anonymous
Waited too long and bad service!. My husband and I went for late breakfast at 10am on a Sunday. Coffees came out promptly but we had to wait 55 minutes for our pancakes. By that time we were very hungry and nearly left. We tried to ask one of the waiters how much longer our order would be but she just fobbed us off and never came over to us. <br/>Will not be back - too many other good places in Freo who know how to cater for crowds.
Nataliermorrison
High Quality, low cost. I absolutely loved this place. The look and feel was rustic with a warm and inviting vibe. Excellent service, with quality food and drink. One of the few places in Perth that serves proper authentic Chai!! Very affordable for the high quality.
N.j.black07
THANK YOU. Walking into Chalky's had a very open and rustic/creative vibe to it. The staff were very friendly and attentive to our needs. The food was great and had plenty of options including gluten free. I thought it was really cool that there are hooks outside to tie your dog up and they sell dog snacks. As far as coffee goes, we ordered a piccolo each and both were made beautifully. The coffee is from an independent supplier in Melbourne and it was a very nice, well balanced coffee. The couple that run it are very cool and interesting people, so go in and have a chat to them.
Samantha Gilbert
Quirky lil espresso bar. I had heard about chalky's through a friend and am glad I seemed it out as I would never have stumbled upon it myself. The food selection is great with gluten free options and doggy biscuits for my fave friend. Good coffee, good service. Try the jam doughnut!! Delish!
Phil
Breakfast Central. A fantastic way to start your day. Great location, service & food unfortunately the coffee needs more attention as i know Dukes roast is one of the best around. Overall one of the great little places in Fremantle.
J Smith
Delicious Reuben but a staff member with a foul attitude. Yes the food and coffee was a 8.5. Maybe don't expect friendly service especially if you encounter this one waitress in particular. The manner was blunt and the attitude was foul, we were made to feel as if we were an inconvenience. Seeing as there was only one other table in the place you'd think that having something to do on a slow day would be welcomed.<br/>I would have left it at that but the rudeness she displayed towards another group of customers urged me to mention it. It was a stormy day and a group of 4 struggled to open the sliding door, the waitress was next to the door and she signalled for them to slide it. They tried thrice before eventually nudging it open. The entire time she just stood there watching them struggle with the door as they got drenched in rain. The effort of raising her arm to help open a door for customers getting drenched was just oh too much effort since she was so flat out with 2 tables. <br/>Shame.. This would've been a raving review if it wasn't for a rude waitress. Makes me think twice about going back, may as we'll try another breakfast place in Freo since there are so many new places popping up.

Not for families, go in your best fedora. As a couple with a young child we asked for a high chair and were told "No, we're a small business and we can't afford the liability. You want to support small business, don't you?". Sitting down we asked for a large/ mug of flat white and were told that it's cups only and that this was important to them, fine, I don't know a huge amount about coffee but this was excellent coffee. Could we swap the eggs in a dish for baked beans, no problem. When we left we were charged extra for the beans as the eggs were "just a garnish". Could we have cutlery? "I'll have to find some."<br/><br/>The food was good however, if a little pricey. The atmosphere very nice but clearly not interested in kids. We won't be returning.<br/><br/>TL:DR Service bad, not a place for children, food good, coffee good. Go to wear your Fedora, show off your artfully styled moustache and practice your acerbic retorts.

Breath of fresh air (from the other coffee chains). I'm from Melbourne and found my favourite spot in the Freo as they have great coffee, delicious and interesting menu and a cool ambiance (check out the local muriel on the wall!) definitely worth a visit and very good prices.
Bon Appetite
Eh?. $10 soup in a coffee cup. WHAT A JOKE! Cold coffee, stale cakes. Had to throw it out. Sick of cafƩs charging a fortune for rubbish. Get your act together!
Fleur
Tastiest food, fabulous staff and great coffee in a warm comfortable yet funky ambience!

Great Sunday morning Breakfast in lovely part of Freo!. We both thoroughly enjoyed our recent visit to Chalkys. My husband did not stop telling me afterwards about how much he enjoyed his Eggs Kilpatrick. I too loved the scrambled eggs and salmon. Great to know Chalkys is open on a Sunday down the quieter historical end of Fremantle.
Malcolm Azzopardi
Sundays all the way!!! Awesome coffee, great service and unreal food. Run by a great young couple, why not make your way to the most historic surroundings of Fremantle and enjoy a great experience. Chalkys all the way... Also open Sundays - so get down there!
Kat
Chalky's is contagious. Great coffee without the Bulls***
Trent
Sunday sensation. The owners are cool, young and know what people like! Every time I go to Chalkys I am greeted with a smile and great service. I recommend this place to all, especially for Sunday breakfasts
Ian
I slip down to this cafe at least 4 times a week for a great coffee and a scrumptious breakkie or lunch. Whether I'm after a light or a filling meal, I always leave satisfied. There is always new yummy wraps and cakes, and the Cheeky Chalky Chalkboard always makes my day.
Benjamin Court
She's open on Sundays too!. Great food, sensational coffee, spectacular value! Owner's wife is a bit of alright too :) You can't lose!

Chalky's is the bomb! Killer location and great coffee + food. My personal favourite is the Ruben Sandwich, epic.

Stopped by chalkys on a windy Friday lunch time. Ordered a coffee and a Reuben sambo which id read about. Coffee was spot on. Loved the Reuben... Great value and side salad was dressed perfectly. Great produce look forward to returning

Great coffee! Just need some highchairs so the folks with toddlers can enjoy a relaxing brekkie :)

Love it. We come here nearly every weekend for brekkie..simply put..coffee has got to be best in fremantle..consistently great..food is always good..service is always friendly. Highly recommend

Tasty. Quite simply, the coffee is good, the food is good, the service is good, the only qualm I have is that the portions are a little small for what you pay and I think toast should come as standard with any egg/bacon breakfast. Other than that, a fantastic place for breakfast or lunch with a great view of the roundhouse.

Sadly I have to leave a bad review for this really cute little cafe. Ordered scrambled eggs on toast and I can assure you, those scrambled eggs tasted exactly the same as the ones I do at home in the<br/>Microwave? They were rubbery and only came with one piece of toast... My boyfriend ordered 'the chook' which came with a 'roast pumpkin salad'. The roast pumpkin was un edible as it wasn't even cooked and the salad was so drenched in oil it tasted horrible. The only up side was the quick service, but I guess we were only 1 of 3 other couples.

We came here for Sunday breakfast after reading good reviews and were disappointed. I ordered eggs on toast and the sour dough bread wasn't sour dough at all - maybe they had run out? The meal took very long to come out, maybe they didn't have the usual staff on. My partner had the eggs Benedict and they were greasy and were served without toast. Not good enough and in future will be going somewhere else for a Freo breakfast.

Cool place! Great food! Portion looks small but actually just nice! Another fav!^^

Absolutely stunning location, topped off by well made coffee and food. As a Melbourne sider, please take this as a compliment but Chalkys feels like a bit of Melbourne in Perth.

LOVE IT! This is kind of place that Perth needs more of. The coffee is sensational and fairly priced. And the food is amazing, top three favourites in no particular order are the Reuben, chipotle chicken and breakfast. Friendly, casual service with a smile these guys are on to a good thing can't wait to see more.

Funky little freo cafe. My partner and I had breakfast here and the food was amazing, not your usual boring menu liked most other cafƩs

I absolutely love Chalky's! Amazing coffee and food and the best service around!

A regular fave of mine. The owners remember your order and preferences even while dealing with the uni student crowds between lectures. Great menu and great coffee

Cute place, good coffee, poor food. Death by Benedict = over cooked poached eggs with bacon, hash browns with hollandaise. When we order hollandaise we expect more than a pathetic drizzle. The worst thing about this place is the service. HEY BLONDIE, SHAKE THE ATTITUDE.

Never ever again!. This is a direct copy of the message I sent to Chalky's to which they have never bothered to respond ...<br/>Good evening<br/>I just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how disappointed I was with my visit to Chalkys today. I have been looking forward for ages to coming down to try you out, so today made the hour long journey. I was planning to just come with a friend, however also happened to bring my 4 year old daughter along. <br/>After enquiring inside as to the ordering procedure we were directed to a table, at which point my friend requested a bottle of water. Although the cafe was not busy we waited and waited and waited. When the wait staff finally arrived, with no water, to take our order, I requested if a ham and cheese sandwich could be made for my daughter. I was offered instead a ham and cheese croissant, so I asked again if a sandwich could be made, so I was offered a bowl of chips, so I asked again if we could have the sandwich, to which the reply was "we don't make up sandwiches". So we gave up, left and took our custom elsewhere.<br/>Now I don't really give two hoots whether you have a kids menu or not as I can usually find something on the main menu that is suitable for my daughter, but in this instance there was nothing and seeing as you had bread, ham and cheese on the menu (and not many customers) I found the inflexibility of your staff incredible. I wonder if I had asked for variation to my own adult meal if it would have been such an imposition.<br/><br/>Reading the reviews on here already the question of whether my adult meal would have been changed with no fuss seems to have been answered ...

Our regular caffeine dealer. The mist important differentiator with this place is that they actually do something a bit different menu wise, and provide table service. It does get busy, and perhaps there are occasional misunderstandings or delays in the service, but it's just so refreshing to be able to sit down, have someone take the order, get the food, and then pay. Of course if you are not a Freo regular you may question the 'refreshing' .... well just try to avoid ordering and prepaying at the counter in other cafƩs nearby!

Lovely coffee, with table service. OK priced at $3.80 for a latte. A small range of wraps ($9) or more expensive made-to-order salads and sandwiches ($16) available. Tucked down the end of the West Ends, this is a nice escape from the hustle of Capp Strip. Cheaper lunch options would be welcome, though.

New Fav!!!!. Away the hustle and bustle of Market street me and my family found this place after a recommendation from friends! They have a all day menu which is perfect for late risers or people that like breaky items for lunch! The food was all beautifully presented, i personally recommend the west end salad with salmon! What really made the experience was the service, its very rare to get good service in freo because staff are always flat out! The waitress was very happy, friendly and organised despite handling alot of tables! They also didnt mind altering the menu slightly to suit dietary needs of my sister! The coffee was great, latte art done very well, Im not sure what coffee they use but its definitely not five senses or fiori (a refreshing change) We will be back to chalkys for sure!

Service is bad !. I visited this place after reading a review in the paper, I tried their Reuben sandwich which was ok I have had better, the meat was cold and not warm as it should be, and it was pink! food dye I am thinking. But the worse bit was the service, the staff are all busy talking with each other, a couple on my large table complained about their poached eggs, the waitress very nicely offered to replace the eggs, well 15 minutes later they still had not arrived, I heard them ask the staff of which they were told 'they are on their way'! 6 mins later they still did not arrive so the couple left, without the eggs, how long does it take to poach eggs? whilst this was happening the staff are all busy laughing and shouting with each other oblivious to the customers.<br/>I found the place to be a bit too hip from the staff point of view, they should remember that customers count.<br/>I will not be going back as there are lots of other places that can serve well.

Worth a try. Tried Chalky's for lunch today after reading very good reviews, went there specifically to try the Reuben Sandwich only to be told after ordering that they had run out yesterday, a bit annoying for a place with a limited menu. Tried the Beefy Bake, a bit unusual with the eggs baked into it but very good all the same, the dry toast with the meal would have been a lot better if some form of butter came with it!<br/>My wife had the Pork Hock and wasn't overly impressed but I tasted it and thought it was pretty good taste wise and very well presented. Venue is in a great setting under the roundhouse, perfect on a sunny day, coffee was good, will have to go back another day to try the Reuben Sandwich.

Really nice atmosphere, beautiful food, lovely staff. Definitely would go again!

My new fav place in Freo... Had brunch today and they happily swapped out the bread for field mushrooms for me :-) #Paleo the smoked salmon is to die for :-) the coffee fab too.

Wonderful. Perfect coffee and they make you feel as though you really matter to their business... and in the most beautiful part of Fremantle.

You must try this place :). I am forever searching for the right blends of coffee...and this place has made me go back for more...with my loved ones.<br/><br/>Gluten free options available ( I like the almond and orange cake)<br/>bread also available for my coeliacs friends out there :)<br/>Love the dƩcor and the service. <br/>Prices are reasonable too.

Great quality food, lacks the classic big breaky option but it is possible to create your own via adding extras. The coffee was very smooth. Great blend in my opinion and worth trying If your looking for alternative blends within Fremantle.<br/><br/>Food ordered by other customers looked amazing.

Good hidden little spot at the corner. was looking to get a cuppa but ended up having a roasted pumpkin wrap to go with my skinny capp. pretty yummy food and the breakfast menu made me wanna go back for more:) <br/><br/>Personally felt that the coffee was a little on the weak side though it was done really well:)<br/><br/>Great job guys I will definitely be back for more:)

I secretly want to vote dislike for this cafe just so nobody else goes there and it is just for us, but i can't. Finally a cafe that remembers table service, bringing cutlery to your table for you, reasonable prices, great coffee and what i think is excellent food. and one other first for me, when i rang the cafe on a public holiday and got a strange broken connection, i got a personalised text from the owner apologising for not being open. When does that happen?? NEVER. The guys that run Chalky's are legends! it is now the new local.

Great coffee. One of my fav coffee locations in Freo! Friendly owners always smiling. The new look is fantastic, it's amazing what can happen to the place if in right hands.

Not bad, if you get served. Went there on the weekend looking for a breakfast feed. Sat down with my partner at a free table, and the waitress brought menus over.<br/>40 minutes later she returned to take our order.<br/>The food was tasty (eggs benedict), but I couldn't bring myself to go back there unless I knew for certain they had more than 1 waitperson to be able to actually attend all the customers. <br/>Tip: don't go there hungry.

My fiancƩ and I went for breakfast on Saturday morning. It was very busy and it was a while before we were seen to, but it was well worth the wait. We both had the death by benedict and coffees. My fiancƩ also had a side of spicy beans. It was all so good. And just the right size. We left feeling very satisfied. I would definitely reccommend and return.

AMAZEBALLS!!!. What a fantastic hidden gem!! Really good coffee, super tasty menu and great service. Eggs Benidict on hashbrowns is the best idea EVER!

BEST BREAKY MENU!!!. Death by Benedict is sooo delicious!!! Asked for some rocket to accompany mine, as it's quite deathly ;) There were six of us and everyone's meals were equally good.<br/>Asked for a single origin long black, so full of flavour. Friendly barista and waitstaff. Loved the space too, lots of character. 10/10

Coffee and decadence. Delicious coffee accompanied by a fantastic couple of cakes - a great treat on the first rainy day in months. The Roundhouse end of Fremantle may be some distance from the known cappuccino strip, but it has by far the best cafes in the area. Chalky's is certainly one of the very best.

Great place. Generous Thai beef salad was excellent. Great location. Will be back!

Ah-mazing. Can honestly say I had the best late breakfast here. Had the mushrooms on toast and was blown away, great service, good coffee and a good atmosphere. Probably my favorite place in Fremantle now..
