Review Joe's Fish Shack - Fremantle

Graeme Edwards
Even after living locally for a very long time this was my first time at Joe's Fish Shack and I was pleasantly surprised. Not the greatest lover of seafood but was very happy with the selection of dishes from the menu. The day was magnificent with the window seat overlooking the harbour making the setting perfect. The meals came reasonably quickly and all at the table were very pleased with their choices. There wasn't a disappointed patron amongst us. The staff seemed a little unenthusiastic about being at work but our young waitress buoyed the mood with her attention and enthusiasm. All in all it was a very pleasant experience and I think I try a surf and turf on the next visit.

The atmosphere is nice, with the view of the marina and the service is good. Food was not as expected though. The best dish was the chowder, which was nice and good the price. The rest was not impressive and quite expensive. Salmon was brown, overcooked and plain. Paid $38 for half a crayfish, the sides also didnt have much flavour. Next time I’d just get the chowder and go somewhere else for freshly cooked seafood.

Couldn't believe for what I just paid $30. Maybe it's just me but didn't expect bucketloads of chips and two tiny prawn skewers, few rings of chewie squid and a bit of unidentified thing on a skewer. Ah yes, mixed salad on the side. Very underwhelming taste. Staff was friendly enough but...Not coming here again.

Had a lovely family lunch at Joe's Fish Shack today! After the disappointment of having to cancel my son's 6th birthday party this weekend due to lockdown, we were fortunate to grab a table here on a wet and chilly Sunday afternoon and proceeded to have a very enjoyable family outing. The service was friendly and attentive, and we felt very relaxed and at home from the moment we were shown to our waterfront table. Food and drinks came out quickly and the seafood was so delicious - the platter for one is highly recommended! The atmosphere was great too which is impressive given they were restricted to 20 diners. We look forward to returning soon.

Good seafood and great view of the harbour. The service wasn’t bad but I wish all the dishes had come out a little closer together! Saw a dolphin as we were waiting for the food.

Being a vegetarian, there were four things on the menu, chips, garden salad, Bruschetta and a vegetarian pasta. Suprisingly, the pasta was actually good. I just wish they had more choices, but great location in Fremantle.

Overall we enjoyed our lunch here. The fish & chips came in quite large size which we were not able to finish😂 The fish was crispy outsider and tender inside, and the chips are thick and crispy too. Quite a satisfying meal, just the outdoor dining area was not clean and the plates were everywhere, and we also saw a mouse eating chips on the floor...

We went there on a Saturday. We have 7 pax and we were being brought all over the restaurant as it seems that the original intended table that our waitress wanted to give us was hijacked by another waitress and claimed that it was reserved when clearly it was just being cleared up. Then we move to another table in the inner part of the restaurant and the waitress was to give us the front table that is being cleared (guests just left) and sadly another waitress instructed our waitress to give us the corner table next to table that is being cleared. We do not like it as it is in a corner and it is harder for elderly folks to get in but we did not argue as it is the first day of Chinese New year. The experience is very negative as we felt like a second class because of who we are. Anyway depict the negative customer experience, the food is excellent and we enjoy the food and we put the negativity behind us.

Very underwhelming. Ordered the seafood platter for 2. Prawns were over cooked. Grilled mackerel was dry. Crayfish was reasonable but had awful mayonnaise on it. Serve of risorico on platter was gluggy. Salt n pepper squid was tasteless and dry. Chilli mussels was nice and the fresh bread was lovely. All in all a disappointment. Staff were lovely and surroundings nice. Would go back only to choose something NOT served on the platters.

Very very ordinary. Kilpatrick was good 1 but the seafood platter was bloody awful. 1 lousy prawn, 1round dog ball which was tasteless, 1 piece of fish that was just ok, salted squid was shrivelled. Would have got better from supermarket frozen section. The coleslaw wasn't touched and the plateful of chips made the platter look bigger that it was. 35 bucks was well overpriced for what it was. Absolutely disgusted and never ever going back. Place needs a overhaul. Probably shouldv known this when there was bugger all people in restaurant.
Mark Davies
Very ordinary had the salt pepper squid not the best. Had better at fish chip shop carnt justify 30 odd dollar price tag. Oysters kill Patrick good but down hill from there.
Julie Dell
Ordered seafood plater cray fish was rubbery and fish very dry for $145 for 2 would think high quality food but wasnt 5 stars will not be coming back
Daniel Lewis
Service was friendly and professional we had the seafood platter everything was cooked to perfection and generous quantity Also had oysters natural fresh and plump Couldn’t ask for more really Only suggestion would be on a night where there’s no breeze a fan or two on the water side near the glass windows wouldn’t hurt they did open the windows but it was still a bit sticky definitely not a deal breaker though was a very pleasant evening Thank you

Food was just above average and the price just on average. The wait staff well above average but the cashier well below average to the point of being rude . That said, I have been there a few times and I will return.

Best views of the Fremantle fishing boat harbour; 5 Star prompt service; suberb Seafood, including mouth-watering chilli mussels and fish cooked to succulent perfection. I highly recommend the stuffed squid - delicious! Great ambience and setting-- And no outlandish bill at the end - I'm a very happy customer.
Kylie Damico
Had the steak under cooked crayfish awful prawns over cooked seafood platter below average and luke warm
Ingrid Longley
I had the skewed garlic prawns ...prawns over cooked ...rice was mixed with tomatoe paste and was tasteless...creamy garlic sauce was thick lumpy and in a tiny side dish. Hubbies fish and chip was average...fish appeared to be flattened as very thin ..total waste of money ☹️️👎🏻

Beautiful food awesome spot Nice staff and a great relaxing atmosphere by the sea

Tbh the only thing I found kinda not to my liking was the ambient music playing. Gigantic serving of fish and chips that was cooked and served piping hot. Not a fan of coleslaw but I managed to eat at least a few mouthfuls of the serving that came with the meal. The garlic bread was what I expected it to be. 4 large slices of it, done properly. We were seated at a nicely presented table and served promptly. Couldn't ask for more.

Omg where to start. The staff were awesome and the atmosphere was so relaxing. I would have taken a photo but i had no food left on my plate... highly recommend and definitely comin back.... loved everything about Joe's fish shack.

The best seafood platters ever!!! Everytime we get a weekend in beautiful Freo, Joe's is our restaurant of choice. The seafood is cooked to perfection and the staff are super friendly and helpful. Wish we lived closer.... thanks guys. Can't wait for the next visit 👍

I tried Joe's for the first time and I was DELIGHTED. The Chilli Mussels was the Star. Flavours were Bammmmm. Hubby tried Snapper and it was super tasty. The staff was so polite and friendly to talk. I have enjoyed my every moment relishing my meals.<br/>HIGHLY RECOMMENDED☺

View is lovely<br/>Service was good - everyone very obliging and helpful<br/>But food can't really rave about.<br/>Salmon dry- not seasoned, ...potatoe no seasoning not even a bit of salt , very teeny amount of bacon/sour cream - was really bland ... veggies like out of a freezer bag with no seasoning at all.<br/>Nope. Not impressed. Sorry. Just average at best. Shame with a killer view

We came here for dinner during a night in Fremantle. The place has a great relaxed feel to it and the staff were very friendly. We ordered the garlic bread, salt and pepper squid and the battered fish and chips. The meals were HUGE and we could have shared one. The food was delicious and the fish was very fresh. Would recommend this place !
Frankie
Came here after a great day of plunge pool and was pretty good fish and chips. Although they weren't home made chips they were ok. The portions are not massive but I'm comparing it to England really where the fish and chips are 100 times better. Fish was still tasty and batter was cooked nicely
Truth Be Told Australia
Great location, family friendly, great service.however Sadly it ends there. We felt like some seafood on a Sunday and thought we would give this place a try! Wish we didn't bother! The only positive was the servings were HUGE! We shared a seafood platter for 1 and a Cesar salad. The prawn in the platter was stuffed with something and honestly was foul. Completely ruined it, the squid was way too salty , and the chips were bla ! Fish was ok. Even the salad was average , way too much Parmesan, and the dressing tasted mass produced. In fact the whole meal tasted mass produced, but priced like it's a freshly caught seafood meal . A real Shame. I wouldn't go back .

I like where this place is situated, being able to look over the river. Beautiful ambience but the food is quite a disappointment. I feel effort isnt placed in their dishes.
El
Great location, particularly if you get a table by the boardwalk and you can look out over the water / to the boats. Huge venue so great for big groups with different sections within the restaurant with funky decor.<br/>But it's pricey in my opinion - $38 for a main sized fish and chips... that's ridiculous. $22 for 3 stuffed prawns with some salad and saucer of sauce..I mean the prawns were very tasty but wow.<br/>As a side, the bathrooms were terrible.
Stazza24
Frequent this location many times a year. Received my first average tasting meal when oredering a seafood salad.<br/>I hope Joes Fish Shack isnt going to change its standards and become a place to go purelly for location & atmosphere which is always great

Love the decor and the service was really efficient and the severs were super friendly.<br/><br/>First time trying Joe's Fish Shack so we decided to splurge and try the seafood combo for 2 (definitely a splurge with what you're paying for) as well as seafood chowder (how can you not have chowder when near the ocean?).<br/><br/>Best dishes were the salt and pepper squid and the chilli mussels. The mackerel tasted a bit meh and the crayfish was a bit over done. The chowder was delicious after we added some seasoning to it.<br/><br/>Overall I think I'll stick with Kailis or Ciserellos.
Master Roshi
Been around trying fish and chips and was hoping for a wow here. The only wow was the size of the meal but the actual taste was nothing to be wow about.<br/><br/>The batter of the fish was tasteless and was pretty soggy. Get like the batter was not cooked long enough or cooked cold and so therefore was soggy. The fish was easily detached from the batter which most likely meant it was only dipped and fried cold too. The calamari were alright but stingy.<br/><br/>A bit below average for me but I've got to be fair to even take away fish and chips which are better, and cheaper...
Georgia Shepherd
If you want to go somewhere and celebrate a special occasion and have your night completely ruined buy ordering a seafood platter where the term "chilli mussels" is used loosely and is more like mussels in passata with barely a hint of chilli (apparently that's just the recipe though - silly me). Along with fish so hard you could throw it at a wall and stay in tact and where they forget the alcohol in your drink! Oh and lastly, just to top it off have the "manager" tell you that they can't actually deal with the problem properly to compensate for your terrible evening because there is "no one here with the authority to do that" (which actually translates into our bosses are cheap, don't actually care about customer service and just want your money so you won't be getting a discount on the worst meal you've ever had). Then this is the place for you!
Ryan Hinchcliffe
By far the worst establishment I have ever seen. It seemed to be everyone's first day at work. From the moment I walked in and waited to be seated to which the host stood afar and looked at me for several minutes, I finally sat down for a seafood platter that came out within 10 minutes Already alarm bell ringing I began eat with the worst microwaved mackerel I was cutting it like a well done steak, chilli mussels that tastes like tomato soup and overall horrible food. As I was eating. Was attempting to get a top up on my beverage for 30 minutes with little tables a big platter and glasses everywhere on the table it was a confined unpleasant place to be

Did Joe's To Go & are outside. Plenty of seats, great view, reasonably priced but not exciting. Crisp batter, a little oily but tasty. 40 cents if you want extra sauce.

We came here on a whim whilst staying in Freo and honestly what a delight. I ordered the garlic prawn pasta which was delicious, my partner had the chef's special seafood platter for one and my father had the paella. We were all impressed with the serving sizes and the quality of the meals. The service was great and even for a Monday night it had a great atmosphere.
Derekjoy
What a disappointment.<br/><br/>Joes has always been a go to place for me, and today was a great sunny day so decided to go and have an easy fish and chip lunch in their outdoor takeaway area.<br/><br/>What did I deserve to get food this bad?<br/><br/>$37.30 for overcooked, dry and scrappy chips topped off with frozen, overcooked squid rings. I also ordered 2 scallops and received 3, but I guess the extra one was to make up for their burnt, dry texture.<br/><br/>How can cooking frozen food be A) Even acceptable in a prime tourist area, and B) Cooked even worse than my granddaughter can cook for me?<br/><br/>Recommendation? Give this place a wide birth, they have obviously become too arrogant for the local trade.

It's been a long time since we have had a meal at Joe's Fish Shack. Good menu. Good drinks menu. Good service. Food was excellent. Would recommend.
JackieLee
Terrible greasy food I had squid drowned in oil my friend had fish and chups was just awful rubbery and no seasonings table and chairs were sticky never again
Sarah Morgan
Lovely setting but horrible food! $32 for some frozen fish, mashed potato and coleslaw that tasted pre made from Coles. No wonder the place was empty compared to Kailis and Cicerellos. Won't be going back to Joes Fish Cak!
Kenji Maratimo
Terrible, old, tired and oily food, although the Spanish mackerel was nice as it was char grilled, I've been there in 2006, 2008 and it hasn't changed, it really is just a glorified fish and chip shop that's lost its way.<br/>Service is good, the ladies were very efficient and the chips not too bad. See pics.

The view is what's keeps this place going. It is very very average but very expensive also. I love seafood and would try somewhere else next time
Chloe Anderson
Loved this place! I've never been a seafood person but I went all out and got the combo seafood platter for two - HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I absolutely loved it.<br/>Not keen on crayfish (personal preference) but everything was fresh and the customer service was great.<br/>Worth the money!
Yang Gao
Big servings, delicious food. Seafood tasted fresh, everything was crisp where needed and tender when required. In-laws from China enjoyed it immensely. Service was prompt and helpful. Definitely be coming back to this place for my seafood fix. Pricing is not on the cheap side but you definitely get what you paid for. The deep fried squid was delicious, ate them like chips.<br/><br/>Great atmosphere in a good location. Looks out onto the harbour but sealed from the elements so pleasant on a windy day. Was not busy when we were there for lunch so can not comment on staff under pressure.
Chris Quek
We took the seafood platter for two for the four of us. Was excellent and the food was so fresh. Though the platter was pricey at $135, it is worth it. Mussels were good, crayfish was tender as well. Enjoyed it a lot.
Cameron
Could not fault this place.<br/>We ordered oysters both natural and kilpatrick for entree and they were that fresh it was like they were taken straight out of the sea. We had Joe's combo seafood platter for main with the choice of steamed then chilled whole cray or whole cray mornay that we chose and it was amazing. Also came with 4 good size spanish mackerel fillets grilled, garlic prawns, salt and pepper squid that was not overly battered a bowl of chilli mussels and a paella style rice.<br/>Had a choice of sourdough or chips on the side.<br/>Chips were nice but should of chosen the sourdough to soak up the flavoursome chilli mussel broth.<br/>Only problem was that we couldn't finish it.<br/>Will be going back there again.

Pleasantly Surprised <br/><br/>I've been to all the fish joints at the marina multiple times over the last decade. Most of the time I'm less than impressed, but today Joes was worth it. The serving was enough for two people. 2 nice size fillets, cooked well in fresh oil on top of a good size serving of chips. We ordered from the outside counter at a price of $15. Our counter server was very friendly and polite. <br/><br/><br/><br/>Atmosphere: +.5<br/>Food: +5<br/>Price: +.5<br/>Presentation: +.5<br/>Professionalism: +1<br/>Other:

Not worth the money..a bucket of prawns was no better than leather. The seafood platter for one. Yuk. Bad batter and tasteless chips.. the stuffed prawn was just that. Stuffed .... yuk.
Perth Critic
Food is quite expensive for the quality and taste. Chips are soggy... First and last time here. Only the view is saving grace. There are many other choices around!

Love the casual laid back feel of this place<br/>Amazing view of the sea.<br/>Oysters were so fresh.<br/>Best chilli mussels I've had in a long time.<br/>Good portion size,<br/>Good place for family dining
Purple Anise
Pros<br/>- fantastic location<br/>- friendly, welcoming staff<br/>- very generous servings<br/><br/>Cons<br/>- very few vegetarian options <br/>- vegetarian pasta was very bland
Kekesugarball
Pleasant family experience, service was quick and friendly. The chili mussels were just so so, but the seafood platter was nice. Fried squid was tender and juicy. Excellent fresh bread! Location is fantastic.

If u go only for fish and chips the<br/>n maybe u feel same or not really compare to other restaurants. However, Sth different from fish and chips? Here we go~ Nice stuffed Prawns~Nice Seafood Platter~ good with white wine and BYO also available. Nice to seat water side with glass windows! No trouble with Birds~ My experience with this restaurant has been 5yrs. Cheers.
SweetPoison
Absolutely love this place! Change the Caesar salad to a garden every time and it's never a fuss! You sit overlooking the water and the food is well priced! Definitely a hidden gem in Freo as from what you see on the outside is nothing as to what's inside!

We've been here a few times and always enjoyed it. Nothing spectacular, but decent food and they play good music (well, I think so anyway). Three of us had lunch on a wet, blustery Friday and all ordered the entrée size Battered Fish and Chips with Slaw. there was plenty of it. I don't think I could have eaten a main course size. The fish and the slaw were fine. The chips were ok but a bit on the ordinary side. My wife thought the oil the fish had been cooked in tasted a bit past its use-by. I hadn't noticed. I had to ask for tomato sauce but it came quickly and no extra charge (some places DO charge, which I think is disgusting). Two of us ordered lemon, lime and bitters, which I thought was perfectly mixed. Some places make it too sweet - this was just right. The service was good. the young Asian girl who served us was attentive, quick and very friendly (as were all the staff we had contact with). She was constantly looking around the tables to see who needed her. The coffee was not the best. Pretty ordinary in fact. But all in all, it's a place where you know what you'll get. It's not brilliant but it's consistent and has a nice outlook over Fishing Boat Harbour. We'll keep going back.

As frequent diners at Joes we were very disappointed today. We haven't been for a few months due to medical problems. As usual  my husband and I ordered the fish and chips. The fish was so thin that it was almost transparent....far below standard. This was not value for money.<br/>On the bonus side there was a new staff member who was very attentive and friendly.
Daniel Sharp
Do not eat here. Fish is very poor quality and overcooked. You might think it's quieter than cicerellos and kailis and there's a very good reason for it. Do not go here.

<br/>I do love Joe's Fish Shack, great view, great food and even better service. :) Did I mention the cray? Amazing!<br/><br/> Although, unfortunately for my house mate and her freshly landed, from over seas, parents - their first experience at an Australian restaurant was unenjoyable. We took them here to show it off, only too unfortunately, being seated next to a lovely couple and their baby. (I understand, having a child of my own and they can be a bit loud sometimes, easily become bored, and this IS a family restaurant.) But I thought it was quiet insensitive to everybody else eating here this night that the screeching coming from the child, and the parents making no effort, I was basically yelling across the table to converse with others as was every other table in site! Maybe you could supply children activities? Colouring or puzzles? After asking for an activity set for my son and being told they have nothing...I was a little disappointed. I will say though, the food never fails... :)

Not impressed guys. If you are going to charge $135 for a seafood platter you want to make sure its top quality. No way was anything on that platter my family & I had on Saturday night was fresh. Also no chips, no salad & you are charging $135. Sorry but there is just no excuse for not serving fresh seafood especially with your location. For example the seafood platter at the Red Cray in Belmont is fantastic. That is the standard your restaurant/shack needs to be at to justify the hefty price tag. Lift your game people.
Nick Fudge
Just ordered some takeaway chips for the kids.... Worst chips ever, I think it was a combination of poor quality potatoes and poor quality oil as they tasted greasy and we couldn't eat them....about the only ones who could were the seagulls! Not sure if the takeaway is run by the same people as the restaurant but won't be ordering from them again!
Justin
Average at best. Fish was over cooked. No way prawns were fresh. They only serve lobster cold. I looked longingly toward Kalis across the way all night
Lee Mueck
Went two night in a row as I wanted the rib eye steak and the Lobster. I started with the stuffed prawns, I thought they might be tough but was pleasantly surprised as they where tender and very tasty. As for the steak, I had medium rare and it was delicious, nice and tender with nice char grill flavours. The lobster the following night was so tasty I had to stop myself from eating too fast. <br/> Service was great and staff where very helpful and pleasant to talk to. I also thought the pricing was very fair and they are huge meals! Highly recommend

I can't rate this place high enough. Was lovely the staff are very attentive and will ensure you always have drinks. The food is gorgeous we had joes combo platter for two and we shared it between four easily with leftovers. If i was rich I would go here once a week its a great place for a special occasion and has lovely views. I can't fault it.
Pasha
Joe's Fish Shack, you need to teach your cooks / chefs how to cook fish if your going to call yourself a Fish Shack. We would normally go to Cicarellos, although thought we would try this place as it was raining and there was limited seating at Cicarellos. Considering 4 out of 5 people ordered fish, and it all came out overcooked / rubbery, and in tasteless lumps.  Even the chips were average, and the salad was horrible.  All the glasses, plates and cutlery were very worn and scratched and were desperately in need of updating.  Considering your prices , I would have expected a little more.

Joe fish shack has always been the go to resturant for me and my family, we've enjoyed so many memories there. <br/>It has the most welcoming atmosphere and the food was always above average. It was honestly the most pleasant resturant on the wharf. <br/><br/>Tonight my partner and I finally got a night to ourselves and we decided to spend it at our favorite resturant. (Joes fish shack) Staff was lovely, meals came out quick. For entree we had Kilpatrick oysters the sauce was disgustingly rich, way too much bbq sauce! But that was probably to cover up the off seafood.... they tasted completely raw and just like bait. <br/> The waitress replaced our meal but just brought out more...but i was already put off by the pervious ones..... So these ones were a little better, sauce wasn't as disappointing but oysters were still raw just less off. <br/><br/>For main i had Chili Mussels which was always my fav! Yum. But this time they looked like tiny babys... I got so excited when I found an average sized mussel, shame it was all mushy and just unpleasant plus weren't cleaned at all! I left a good 3/4 of my meal..... <br/><br/>On a positive note my partner ordered steak and chips and he was very happy... I guess the trick is to just avoid the seafood. <br/><br/>

Average fish and chips and above average prices. There are better places to eat on the area - we only end up here as a last resort. Disappointing.
Jo
Servings were huge! The entrees were beautiful however the mains tasted mediocre and service was quite slow - lots of staff but very inattentive. Plates were not cleared, water glasses not refilled, cutlery not replaced. Lovely venue however not somewhere we would rush back to.

Nice ...but could have been more on the plate. While we are on holiday here we thought we would spend Saturday down in Freo strolling the markets and what better to do than eat at Joes Fish Shack right??? hmmm im not sure about that. I will have to return just to make sure the dining experience was a 1off and not the norm. Although the meal was tasty, I was very disappointed at the meal size and felt like we were being hurried through as they wanted our table or something.. not real sure what was going on. I left there after tasty salt n pepper squid and was hungry less than an hour later... wondering if I wrongly got a childs serve? and the waitress wasn't much help when I queried it upon serving our meals to us. but as I said it was tasty and will have to try again before I retuen east in a few weeks. Fingers crossed!

Exactly what we wanted!. On a nice quiet Monday lunch period we had the choice of going to a few of Perth's flashier places for Mother's Day lunch part 2 but instead chose to go all out on the big seafood platter at Joe's. Its important to not go to a place like Joe's expecting spherified sea urchin, a semi-quasi-partial squid eye reduction or deconstructed wooden boats. You go to a place like Joe's because you want good, honest, old school seafood. The seafood platter for two could be marketed for 4 people. We couldn't come close to finishing it. But it was what we would have expected and we really enjoyed it. They asked if we wanted the whole crayfish split between mornay and steamed. That was a great choice, the mornay was delicious, the salt and pepper squid was really good, the Spanish mackerel was cooked nicely and there were no shortage of mussels and no there were no beards and there was no grit. In don't watch Master Chef and critique restaurants based on some wanky idea of what it could be. I don't think Joe's apologises for it being old school seafood. Thats what you get. No complaints from us.

Quirky & Fun. Although we live in Freo it was my first visit to Joes and we really enjoyed the quirky decor and fun atmosphere of this restaurant. Our meals were huge and we all thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

WOW. 1. Fresh fish so good<br/>2. Des, our waiter, amazing<br/>3. Paid less than $100 for 2 with bottle of wine<br/>4. We'll be back!

Nothing kills the romance of Valentines Day like having to hand pick the beards, complete with bits of shell off your mussels before you can eat them because the kitchen staff couldn't be bothered cleaning them properly. Topped off with the lovely waitress approaching our table and telling me she's serving us because she was told to... Nothing to do with being a paying customer or anything. The chilli sauce for my mussels was tasty however I did not enjoy crunching the bits of grit, seaweed and shell and left my entree size mostly uneaten. Very disappointed.

Happy Dockers Table. 10 of us keen Dockers supporters went to Joe's Fish Shack last Saturday night to celebrate the start of 2015 and had a ripping time. We mainly had the crayfish as a couple of the boys were ex fishermen and we were raft in the size and quality and the price was less than we expected to pay in a restaurant. The cold wasn't too shabby either.

Cape Town feel, but Better. Coming from South Africa we are used to dining at seafood restaurants on the water, but Joe's took us to another level. The setting is unbelievable with the water right at our window close enough to touch. But it still got better, our waiter was such a friendly girl with the most beautiful smile, nothing was too much trouble. But it still got better, the food was out of this world, we eat lots of fresh seafood back home but Joe's was the best. Lots of family and friends travel to Perth so we now know where to send them for the best seafood in town.

Customer service shocker!. Been to Joe's numerous times over the last 2 years and I must admit at first all is well. Food is very nice and the wait staff are all friendly. However, the wait staff and service has got progressively worst over time. Not sure what it is but there always seems to be a lack service. More than often, you wait to be greeted at the door looking aimlessly for a staff member to acknowledge you're even there before you get seated. You are served warm tap water (fair enough you can order bottled water for a premium) but lack of service means you don't get a second round unless you ask. The waitress tonight asked how our meals were going but failed to notice our empty glass so we had to ask for another glass of water. Why not leave a carafe of water at the table? Wait staff seem to change each time we visit - maybe backpackers - who barely know how to provide good service let alone understand what you want to order. On a positive note food is always fresh, tasty and priced reasonably. It's a shame the above mentioned makes it an unpleasant dining experience when the food is faultless!

Great seafood in Fremantle! We had the fish platter for one and the fish was tender and delicious!<br/>The stuffed prawns are a must-try. Yum!
WineMeDineMe
Fantastic location overlooking the water and delicious food! My partner and I had a grilled platter for one and the fried platter for one- the flavours were fantastic, the fish was fresh and the service was friendly! We will definitely be back!

Waterfront Table and Meals the Best. Our table was right on the water with the window open we could smell the salt air, just wonderful. My husband had the steak and said it was the best piece of meat he had eaten in a long time. I went for the grilled salmon and it came with veggies, so fresh and yummy but also healthy. We had the local Mad Fish white wine and thoroughly enjoyed our first experience at Joes and will definitely go back again.

Delicious & Great Value. Last nights dinner out for our group of 10 was outstanding. We all ordered local fresh fish and all rapt with the meals, knowing what fresh fish cost we all were really pleased with our cost of a night out. Thanks to all especially our waiter.

Absolutely horrified. I have just attempted to buy kids fish and chips at Joes to go for my 5 yr old....wanting grilled fish rather than battered....cost jumped from $9.90 to $18.25! When I queried this and suggested that this was excessive they laughed at me...said I was the only one who had ever asked for grilled fish for kids but told me that I could buy a piece in the restaurant for $10...go figure. Asking for the Manager did not help and there was no intent to resolve the issue....all this in an environment where there is a concentration of similar places. CUSTOMER CARE FACTOR ZERO....RUDENESS 100. Still laughing and smirking when my husband went up to demand our money back.....this local saying never, ever again

It's a dud! Overpriced and overrated seafood platter that left us wishing we went somewhere else.

First Class. Ordered fresh crayfish and others had an assortment of fish meals, it was all first class without the price tag. Well done to all the chefs and waiters, we had a great night out.

Max. Despite the lovely location, the food is a big disappointment. Very greasy fish and chips. I peeled back the leathery batter from my piece of fish to find the meat dry and unappetising. <br/>As soon as we sat down we noticed the glassware ( wine glasses ) were smudged with finger prints. I pointed this out to a staff member who said she would bring us some more. The fresh glasses never appeared. Instead, we ordered beers.<br/>After such a disappointing main course we decided not to order dessert or coffee. <br/>The staff were friendly, but seemed muddled and the food was very ordinary. <br/>I doubt Ill be back.

Great Seafood. Brilliant lunch with the best seafood ever, waterfront location perfect.

I was very disappointed, with my recent meal of the marinated snapper. Was small, thin and very dry. When I complained I was told yes they had issues that day with their fish supplies. Over priced and disappointingly handled when I complained.

Very disappointing - whiting dry - virtually inedible. Also why do restaurants smother fresh crayfish with sauce - it wasn't described that way on the menu!! Wine list - boring! A boring restaurant with ok views. Do not bother!!

Lunch menu. Took my wife for lunch at Joes during the week. After checking out the menu we decided to try the combo platter for two. We were concerned with the selection of mackerel fillets on the platter but decided to give it a go. The food on the platter was all good but I would of liked more variety. Four good sized mackerel fillets for two people is too much. Also the bowl full of salt and pepper squid was the same, too much.<br/>I suggest reducing the amount of these and maybe adding in some oysters and scallops. The prawn skewers were very nice and the chilli mussels were ok, I've had much better in Freo. The cray tail was ok, I'm not a big fan anyway. For the dollars I would say that its not the best value platter in Freo, that would go to Clancys. But with a bit more of a range and at that quality it would be a different story

Just Perfect. Went to Joe's last week and had a thoroughly enjoyable night with fresh seafood and local wines all whilst seated over the water with the most beautiful view. Would also like to commend our wait person, Julie, she helped make our visit just perfect.

LUNCH SPECIAL $17.95 FISCAKES, CHIPS AND SALAD. The most disappointing lunch i have ever had.<br/>Came out with 3 uniformed fishcakes that looked like a homebrand product from the freezer section ( homebrand probably taste better ) they had no flavour and the most stoggy texture, didnt see any fish or potato<br/>the chips where nice but the salad consisted of limp lettuce leaves, 1 x tomato wedge, 1 x slice of cucumber and a few sprouts<br/>wont go back ever again

STUFT PRAWNS. Was taken to lunch at Joes Fish Shack for my Birthday today,6/8/14, my friend and both ordered Stuffed prawns and he an entrée of oysters. Oysters were fine, my prawns came and found they were not what i had enjoyed on previous visits. I agree withwith Jojo75s post, prawns small with a lump of stuffing at end. YUK!! Spoke to manager who said recipe hadn't changed in 15years. Well somethings wrong and I won't go there again even though they knocked some off the bill. VERY DISAPPOINTED

Brilliant Dinner. Was in Perth a few weeks ago and stayed in Fremantle, my colleagues and I went walking for a place to eat and stumbled across Joes Fish. Shack. We had the best seafood dinner of all time with really good waiters giving great service. We have another conference next year in Fremantle and I can't wait to eat at Joes again.

Our entree of oysters kilpatrick took ages to come out and when it was brought out they were like warm because my hubby had seen them sitting on the servers for the five minutes prior. Our main meals were nice but once again took a long time to come out to us which was very disappointing due to the fact that the restaurant was very quiet. I won't be rushing back to Joe's.

Overcooked dry snapper - shame would have been a nice piece of fish if cooked correctly. No salads on plate except coleslaw. Felt very "yellow food" like
Jojo
Let down. Went for lunch, looking forward to the stuffed prawns. They were tiny prawns and the stuffing was pretty much just breadcrumbs. Nowhere near as good as they used to be.

Im not a reviewer. Have to admit I am not a reviewer, but we were so impressed that I have to. Meals were impressive in presentation and size as well as taste. Sure on the higher price side, but for quality and meals that size there were no complaints. Staff were helpful and efficient, yet we didn't feel rushed. My Grandparents last night in Perth (from NZ) and they were grateful to end on a high note. Thanks Joe's, we will be back.

A food disapointment. Have been to Joes many times and have never been even slightly impressed with the food. We keep going back in hope that it will improve because of the great location. Had grilled snapper last night, should have went next door to Kailis and ordered there traditional fish and chips for $12 would have been a much better cooked piece of fish.<br/><br/>Think we are done with Joes - Great location below average food.

YUM and FRESH!. Went to Joe's a year ago and the fish and chips was average so was a bit reluctant to return. Went last week and I am still thinking about the delicious food we had!! It was so fresh and tasty and I was really impressed.

Food over cooked. Went to dinner with my wife Sunday 7 PM. We have been going to this restaurant since it opened and have always enjoyed the food and dining experience. However, on this occasion both my wife's grilled spanish mackerel and my snapper were both dry and over cooked. Chips were not freshly cooked and coleslaw was also unremarkable. For some $28.00/meal this was not acceptable. I think we have moved on from this restaurant after many years and won't be back.

Lovely restaurant. Had a dinner with family and friends at Joes Fish Shack and it was a great experience. The staff were so friendly and tried hard to accommodate our big group. We ordered Joe's Combo Seafood Platter for Two as main. It was unbelievably big and tasty, nicely presented, and it can easily feed two young families. Beverage was also great. Very quiet so we could talk easily without shouting like in other restaurants. Would love to come back another weekend. I suggest advanced booking to get a better view.

Will dine here with a discount .... I used to stay away from Joe's because of it's pricey menu. Finally ready to try something new and armed with the Perth entertainment card - 5 of us went to dine here. Due to higher prices but wanting to try a range of food, we decided to share a large seafood chowder, joes seafood platter for 2, joes grilled platter for 1, coleslaw side and a mix salad side. We were offered complimentary bread (with yucky margarine!!) which we saved for chilli mussels included in all seafood platters. <br/>We had a hard time finishing everything !!! The portions were huge (hence the price). The food quality was ...slightly average. Mackerel was dry, skewered prawns were ok, chilli mussels had good flavour but was slightly over cooked, crayfish was coated with salad cream/mayo so it tasted like prawn cocktail and I had better chowder elsewhere (kaili's to be exact). We ordered 6 teas/hot chocolates and a dessert. <br/>The total after 25%discount was 35$ per person! I thought that was a real bargain for so much seafood. Coupled with seats facing the water- it was a good night. The food was a average but the portions, service, price (with the discount) and venue made up for it.

Had lunch on Saturday 15th March - for birthday celebration. Very dissappointed. Scollops were not scollops - but reconsitituted meat - chewy, smelly, very dry.....

Stewart. Very disappointed with the seafood platter for one, 1fish 1stuffed prawn(very dry ) and some calamari rings . No mussels no scallops no crab basically no variety. Talking about cutting costs this would be the first restaurant I know that serves margarine instead of butter with bread. Ordered a kids chicken skewer for my son don't bother unless you want leather it was so dry I could even suggest they re heat food. Some wonder but each to there own .

Solid seafood. No nonsense seafood, reasonable prices, attentive staff, that's how dining out should be. Me and my wife always enjoy the fish @ Joe's

Fantastic!!. We went to Joe's three times over the last four days while staying in Fremantle on our honeymoon - all three times we had excellent food, and fantastic service from all the staff! would definitely recommend Joe's to anyone.

Relaxing and very Freo lunch. I have'nt been to Joes for a while. Enjoyed lunch today. The salt and pepper calamari was tender and tasty. The portions are generous and I am glad I opted for the entree size for main. Great views over the Fishing Boat Harbour. Friendly service, good ambience. I will be back.

CEO. Took my key staff for lunch and it was great. The dish i had was the best salt and pepper squid i have had for a long time. The staff were also great they engaged us and chatted. All our food and drinks came out promptly and so all up a great lunch and experience.
Yum
Nice Fish. We had the barramundi and the salt and pepper squid both of which were very nice. The fish was cooked perfectly. The chips were great and the coleslaw hit the spot. Service was attentive and professional.

BEST SEAFOOD IN FREO love t.... BEST SEAFOOD IN FREO<br/>love this place so much its the best service in all of fremantle the staff are always friendly, helpful. Good value. Hadn't been to Joes for many years - loved it so much every time we came for years, but had had a few "iffy" meals there and there has been so much bad press about it via friends that we had avoided it for years. Had family friends from UK in Perth recently who were en route back to London from a regional centre and just wanted to have a Freo day before they got on the plane. So we ended up at the Fishermans Wharf early evening and they chose where they wanted to eat. Joes it was.... we had the beer battered fish and chips and they reckoned it was the best they had ever eaten... and I have to agree! So I will be going back to Joes again very soon. Portions were huge - perhaps I might need the kiddie size next time - and the fish was delectable and perfectly cooked.... chips to die for.... and the service was spot on. Guess the negative press has been noted and Joes has improved.

A true Favorite. Joe's is an old favorite of mine, visited for a few different Christmas lunches towards the end of 2013. Over all it was a relaxing and enjoyable experience every time. Seafood Chowder is amazing, Steak is always well cooked and bonus points for presentation. Our group of friends usually get out to Freo every 3 months (purely a distance constraint) and this is the venue that is the preferred location to dine.
LGFantastic
Great food and experience. We drove to Freo on Friday 20th Dec and lucky for us we found a park outside Joe's Fish Shack and we decided to go in and try it our having never been before. I am a seafood lover and my hubby is steak and vege but he was very surprised to find his steak cooked to perfection and classes it as one of the best ever and it was $32 (better cooked than Char Char Bull) I had the tasmanian salmon which was fantasic and the mash so smooth and yummy. My only suggestion would be to have a sauce with the dish. Loved my yummy cocktails and the view. Staff were very friendly and attentive and it wasn't an issue we didn't have a reservation. We will be back and I will bring a seafood lover with me so I can try the seafood platter for two- just loved the look of the 3 tier stand and quite a few diners had selected it and they were enjoying it. Thanks for a great experience :-) I thought the prices were reasonable with good portion sizes.

Fresh WA Crays. Not many places sell fresh WA Crays so we were rapt to get the reall thing at Joes Fish Shack. Simply steamed and served natural, so good!

Perfect View. Yesterday was our first visit to Joes and the meals were super. What really topped it off were the views over the water with the added bonus of a pod of dolphins swimming around the harbour. Brilliant!

Nothing to Rave About. We decided on the spur of the moment to head to Fremantle for dinner and drove all the way from Kalamunda to dine at Joe's however both myself and my daughter were extremely disappointed with our mains. My grilled fish was dried out and tough! It was like a very old piece of fish. My daughters was much the same, over cooked and dry :( At least the sticky date pudding was ok. Won't be going there again.
Skull Dug
Quite good fish and chips. The place is rustic surfie culture but is getting a bit tired

My favourite resturant! Friendly great service and never disappoints! Freshest fish cooked to perfection!' Thank you

Reconsidering. Just thought I check Urbanspoon for the ratings on the place. OMG, my husband has booked this place for my birthday, and from the reviews I am not sure if I should take a risk and still dine here on Saturday
