Review Grumpy Sailor - Fremantle

Kim Armstrong
10/10 definitely recommend!! I hate bagels - but this bagel OMG!!!!!! It’s amazing - the bread and seeds, so perfect and heated so everything is warm. I never buy coffee because I have a very specific long black with oat milk and nobody ever gets it right. I always make coffee at home This coffee is the best I’ve ever had at a store. And my fresh orange juice is bomb too Larger coffee really is large :) Got the $10 special with the orange juice

Nice busy atmosphere and busy interior, really adds a feeling like something is going on here all the time. Great deals on bagels, spread & coffee. However if you stray from that, the the menu does become pricey for what it is and the quality. Stick to a coffee & bagel for maximum value here.

Found this place randomly walking through Fremantle. They have a huge menu, a bagel lovers paradise! Almost every combination of bagels you can think of (you can even make your own creation!) They also offer all day lunches just incase you want something different for breakfast. Their own blend of grumpy sailor beans was really rich and smooth, in the neighbourhood of 5 senses imo. The cafe decor is fun and quirky with mismatched furniture and a vintage feel. They also sell their own apparel in store to support small businesses in Nepal. Great staff and service, definitely a place where you want to hang for a while.

Very accommodating to us with our baby. Allowed us to use the staff toilets and helped us heat up the milk. Good food. Good price. Lots of shady clean tables. Very friendly staff.

Looking for some quick food and coffee, we were fortunate enough to come across this little gem. There was a display full of bagels and then another display of other tasty looking things. Being on a trip from Brisbane, Perths severe lack of lactose free milk (not soy or almond milk but actual lactose free milk) had disappointed but these guys had it. They also had soy and almond and rice and others I don't care to remember. They made a very tasty coffee and the bagel was very well thought out and tasty. The gent serving us suggested I get my coffee and bagel as a meal so that it was cheaper before he added a little extra for a large. The place has a nice quirky feel, a fairly reasonably sized library and a tip jar that is donated to the children's hospital. All up I think this us a great little place and I wish it was in my home town not on the opposite side of the country.

The bagels were fantastic, the fries were top notch, and coffee? Ahhhhh-mazing! Warm place, nice ambiance, super welcome staffs and not the mention great value for such tasty foods and drinks! I might as well give them 7stars!

We enjoyed the breakfast and coffee here. The service is great. Would recommend it.

I like this place it's quirky in a quieter location than the anonymous other larger place in the area. Foods good uncomplicated well priced you can sit here on your own or with others. I always like to have brunch here when I'm in Fremantle. Yes the coffee is very good

Best coffees in Perth! the large mugs are the perfect size and the big breakfast omg! I love how I could stuff all what was on my plate into the bagel and smash it :) it's such a kickback relaxing cafe I'm coming back this Saturday lol

I am over here on holidays all the way from Canada. My best friend took me here and I absolutely love It! Amazing bagel sandwiches and fries aka chips! I also love the great lattes and atmosphere this place has! I will definitely be back before I head home.

Fourth time here, and as per usual the food and drinks are awesome, and the chips have got to be the best in Perth by far :)

Brilliant location just off the cappuccino strip. Quietly peaceful great coffee, best long mac I have had In WA, very well priced food, quality not compromised either. Good luck with your venture we will surely be back! Our new favourite

Great little tucked away place. Cool feel to it and even cooler staff and DAMN, your toasties are great. Doing the simple things right, definitely going to be my new regular for sure.

I love this quirky, vintage style cafe. The coffee and cake is great and staff friendly. The teddy table numbers, board games and books just add to its appeal.
Regina Titelius
Great service, friendly and relaxing atmosphere and yummy eats and drinks. A great example of what makes Fremantle a unique and buzzy place
Kelly George
Love the coffee, love the atmosphere, friendly staff, tasty bagels.
Freoman
Lovely fresh shop in a renovated corner of Freo. Moved recently but still has the same bagels and Coffee. Pleasant food and drink.

Awesome coffee and yummy bagel

Been here a few times now and will be back again. Always amazing service and food, some of the best gourmet bagels around and great coffee. A cute little cafe too along with a book sharing system. The hangover bagel is a go to favourite.

Stumbled across The Grumpy Sailor while walking towards the coffee strip. Was pleasantly surprised to find a kid friendly cafe with good coffee and food. Would definitely recommend if you have young ones or plan on parking up at a cafe to read a book, etc.

Good size to the bagel burger, it kept me so full I missed dinner! Lovely vibe to the place, nice to look through the books while waiting for our order. the chips are super good!! The smoothie was average, so-so, no complaints but no compliments either. The quesadillas on the menu only said two pieces came however we got three which was a pleasant surprise! We also had to leave before we could finish the chips and the staff were helpful and nice about getting a takeaway container and I even asked for a cup for my smoothie and got poured for me aha

I eat here almost every day during the week...amazing coffee, bargain lunch deal, delicious food and the BEST staff! I'll keep on coming back here and absolutely recommend for your next coffee and bite to eat. 👍💖
Krisco
Pretty crappy they say open till 4.30 yet they shut the doors a lot earlier. Especially when you travel across Perth just to get a bagel. Not very impressed
Finleyhimawan
Afternoon coffee at this place is quite chill. The menu is quite extensive for someone who wants to have quick lunch or breakfast. Looks like they also got a few gluten free selection of cakes too. But we had some coffees and cakes and they are lovely. The coffee is more on the weaker side so for those who likes stronger coffees might want to add more shots. But nevertheless good coffee and good place to chill so it's a good Sunday afternoon spent!

Very generous portions at a reasonable price. Really nice food and relaxed atmosphere. Service can be up and down at times so be patient or go somewhere else if you're after a quick breakky.

We loved it! We both had a bagel special which was a loaded bagel and a coffee for $10. We upgraded the coffee to large for an extra $1 each which is great value! The bagels were delicious, the coffee was yummy and the service was amazingly fast and friendly. Really great value, lovely atmosphere is lovely and food is delicious!

Great coffee, great bagel....…......................

Small little shop at the corner of the street..........................................
KutsikFood
Great place to kick back in relax in one of their couches and grab a book to read. They even have a swap or buy library, its fabulous! They remember your order whenever you come in (If you dont change your mind all the time, like I have been as I make the change from long mac to long black!) Their coffee and a bagel deal is the best deal in freo currently $10 and fresh and in-house made bagels, yum! They have recently (this week) opened up a 'sister' shop opposite target and near oxfam which is more for a 'drive by and grab your coffee style' as its a much smaller premises. Great service and friendly staff.
Chantal
10$ coffee and bagel deal! The bagel is so delicious!! Will be back :) the coffee is great as well and the staff are so friendly! And dog friendly :)

Early in the New Year I came here to shake of the “going back to work blues.” It was one of these hot mornings with the city to bake, and I had thought Freo would at least have the doctor, but not on this morning. It is a casual and friendly café with a so Freo feeling about it; maybe the recycled furniture and bookshelves filled with all sorts of books. It’s off the beaten track from the cappuccino strip, but it is well worth a trip here. What a find, and lots of regulars come here; I can see why. Order is at the counter, and the order was taken by a cheerful and friendly staff member. I went with the Spanish style baked hot pot and a long Mac. My coffee arrived quickly and was very good. The brekkie took some time, but when it arrived it was an amazing pot of goodness served with a smile by another friendly staff in a cast-iron pot and came with a toasted bagel. It had a nice chilly kick to the beans, perfect for waking up the buds. Egg was baked perfectly and still had its golden lava once I cut into it. And the toasted bagel was excellent too; I don’t normally hunt out bagels, but this was really good and different to the usual offerings. The pot and bagel were super filling and unfortunately I was unable to finish it all, but it was amazing. Wonderful friendly and genuine service in a delightful Freo café with really good brekkie and coffee. Definitely recommend a detour from the strip!
Wakeusup
Very disappointing:( Excessive amount of salt on the chips made them inedible. The fish was some imported, frozen horribleness. The salad dripping in oil. A cute place though, with its own 'library'. The coffee was good :)

Got a vegan bagel, vegetarian bagel, and a coffee to take away. The $10 bagel and coffee deal is amazing! Both bagels were absolutely delicious, though the vegan one could do with a little extra kick of flavour. Will definitely be returning to this cosy venue.

The Grumpy Sailor's relaxed atmosphere was apparent when I strolled in this morning after parking right outside. Nothing fancy, but it's nicely set up for diners inside to relax and read the papers, while seating is available outside.
Smiling staff, plenty of prepared food options available early morning, and a good coffee to send me on my way. The bagel and coffee deal ($10) is great value but I'll be going back to the Grumpy Sailor because of the ambience.
LittleGirlBigFood
I think the grumpy sailor is a good concept but they really need to put the prices down a little. For a bagel joint it is too expensive. The coffee is very good.
Zoodle
Quaint, cute, inviting, not pretentious, fresh, delicious bagels! Need I say more?
$10 coffee and bagel lunch special is very worth it.
Amy
Came with a friend during my work lunch break. Such a lovely little place. I got the lunch special, a bagel and coffee for $10. The davies bagel (vegetarian one) was delicious! I loved the sun-dried tomato spread on it. Coffee was good too. Will definitely return👌
Karen Gan-Fong
What an awesome place. Love the food, menu variety, ambience and service was top notch. We went for lunch for a friend's birthday, and not only did they give us a yummy oat slice on the house, but were also happy to help us with the cake we brought, knife, candles, plates etc.
Sam Cutri
Had lunch with my wife and little one. I had the flaming bird bagel and she had the turkey with cranberry. Food was great and the coffees were just as good. Decor has a quirky feel to it with a book exchange to boot. Will definately be back to sample more morsels.

As one of many places in Freo to get a coffee this place does nothing to help itself and gain customers. Came here just before 4:30pm (the closing time said 4:30ish) and was told they were closed. Fair enough...but at least offer take away food and/or coffee. If the coffee machine was just clean fine...but there was plenty of food in the cabinet which could have been offered as take away (and there was still customers in store). A place that has really good coffee (like Lenny the Ox) at least offer something when they're closing but this place (which is nothing special) doesn't really do much to get and/or keep customers. Not worth it. Go somewhere else.

$10 bagel and coffee special is a good one! Good coffee here, enjoyed the bagels - toasted a bit longer would have been better. I'll be back for a good value lunch break.
Ben Goodman
all i've had here is bagels. I'm sure they probably do other things here, but i'm not sure because i come in with bagel tunnel vision. so get some bagels here and be happy, trust me.

After hearing and reading about the famous $10 coffee and bagel, I thought I'd come try it for myself. All I can say is wow, what great value that also comes with quality. Very hard to find that combination together. We ordered a salmon, caper & cream cheese bagel and a chicken pesto bagel. We had them cut in half so that we could try half of each. It was the best bagels I've ever had, hands down. The coffee was good too, not the best I've had but a lot better than most. They also have a great book program.Great atmosphere, great service and great bagels. Will definitely be back for more!
Ally Harris
Yes! Haven't tried the coffee but had a simple rosemary bagel with olive tapenade- delicious. Plus the staff were very accommodating and friendly, knew I had to get back to work and were extremely conscious of my time. Thats so nice. (didn't give it a higher rating only because I didn't try much of the menu so can't comment on a lot of it, but the small thing I had was nice)
J Smith
What a bargain $10 small coffee and an amazing tasting bagel! This place and hush used to be our coffee run spot when i worked in freo. Tucked away and cosy decor. Coffee is a good but grabbing a bagel from this place was the highlight! The bagel options are always extensive, exciting and fresh. Bagel itself is great quality and legit!
Cornflakegirl
Great little cafe. Coffee and a bagel $10 the nephew had that I had quiche and a juice. Staff are friendly decor is great come on ur own for a chill or with a friend for a catch up. Books to read and ur 'number' is a soft toy. Really what else could I ask for

Found inbetween the cracks of Fremantle, Grumpy Sailor is a true hidden gem. Its interior is quite spacious with cozy sitting areas and the entertainment of a reading corner full of good titles (which you can also purchase), a small play area for the little ones, and free Wi-Fi.

It has become my customary place to study, relax and go before work as the food and drinks are reasonably cheap, the atmosphere is cheerful and inviting, plus the coffees are the best in Freo!!
Littlemisspiggyeats
10 bucks for a regular coffee and bagel of your choice? How.GOOD.is.that? And no they are not your dodgy cream cheese and snowpea shoots. I had a smoked salmon toasted bagel and my soy cap. I had such lovely service from all three staff members with the manager walking up to me to say your coffee wont be long littlemisspiggyeats. This gem is tucked away from the hum drum of the main drag and a great space inside and out to eat. I will be back not only for the 1990's prices but for good old fashion service.

$10 for a fresh bagel and coffee! Heck yes! Visited The Grumpy Sailor for the first time this Saturday and was greeted with friendly smiles and an explanation of the menu and cafe concept. The staff were so lovely and helpful and really made me feel at home in the cozy cafe. I opted for a pre-made salmon bagel however you can make your own for an extra $2. Bagel was warm and doughy after being toasted and all the elements were right on. I wasn't a fan of the coffee-too hot and milky for my liking. But I would definitely come back for another lunch special and a chat with the friendly staff :) Bonus points for spelling my name right on the coffee cup ;)
Wags Out West
The grumpy sailor is currently my favourite lunch spot in Fremantle. It’s located a street behind the Cappuccino strip on quite a busy corner so you do have to contend with some traffic noise. Its quite large indoors with a reading corner well stocked with books to sit and read. They also have a kiddie area with plenty of toys. They have a mix of mismatched tables and chairs outside with some rather rickety coffee tables so I wouldn’t suggest you tie even a small dog to a leg. For an added bonus they offer free wifi.

Love this place! Stumbled across the Grumpy Sailor (little hidden away) and thought I'd give it a try. Great coffee, friendly staff and very reasonably priced! Come to Vic Park!

This cafe used to be housed at the front of the New Edition Bookshop and my friend and I used to frequent the store, constantly so we could muse over the books whilst drinking coffee, pots of chia and ordering bagel with cream cheese, after bagel with cream cheese. I love this cafe and I am so glad that they moved to their own store and did not shut down entirely. These bagels taste authentic, the coffee is great, the free hotspot wi-fi is convenient and the little bookshelves that they set up around the room keep their customers occupied.

Best coffee in freo. What a hidden gem! hidden away from the hustle bustle of the strip in paddy Troy mall is the grumpy sailor. The best coffee in Fremantle, and the bagels are the best anywhere! Real bagels not bread rolls.
Great service, a great place to chill out and escape over an awesome cup of coffee! Will be back.

Best Bagels In Perth!. I'm from New York where bagels are a necessity of life. I've been searching for 3 years since being in Perth for REAL bagels. TGS is a dream come true. It has a great atmosphere, friendly staff and, of course REAL, I REPEAT, REAL BAGELS of excellent quality. I highly recommend dropping by for a nice relaxing environment and a read of the Celestine Prophecy :)
Damien
Awesome coffee and amazing bagels - can't get a better start to the day!
Richard
Great coffee. Right up there for the best coffee in Freo.Have'nt tried food though the bagels look really tasty. Friendly staff.
Coffeequeen
I was definitely not grumpy after my late lunch here!! Top 5 cafe's in Freo for shizz! Lovely staff that aren't too busy for a little chat. Coffee is usually pretty great. Had their salmon and cream cheese bagel today, I eat this style bagel every time I find one in a cafe and this was my fave by far! Lettuce and cucumber for extra crunch. GENIUS! The atosphere here is so lovely too. A good book and good coffee make for grrrreat day :)
Isobel
Great coffee and lovely staff. This place rates in my top 5 places to get coffee in Freo plus you can browse New Edition while you're at it.
Mrs.Foodie
Awesome Coffee!. I have been a HUGE fan of this place for a long while. The staff are lovely, the service quick and efficient and I must say their coffee is one of the most consistent in flavour and preparation throughout Fremantle. The bagels are lovely and fresh, especially the salmon and capers which is delicious. Seeing as it's attached to the New Edition bookshop, it has managed to successfully combine my two loves, thereby making it my favourite place to haunt. Thank You guys for creating a space I will NEVER tire of!
Nibbler
Slipping.... I used to be mad keen on their coffee but recent staff changes have seen this place sliiiiide to being fairly average. It's now struggling to stay in my Freo Top 5. (Top 3 = 1) Hush, 2) Chalkies, 3) Blink.
Cantante
Worth a stop. Great coffee and the artichoke or turkey/cranberry bagels are to die for. (I' d never really had artichoke before) Sit out the front and hear the music from the record store over the road and watch the world go by, it's really Freo.
C
Tops.. Great coffee, bagels & cakes. Staff are friendly and passionate about what they do. Best priced short macc in town!
Allergic To Gluten
Gluten Free Cookie and great coffee. I am a regular ... for a reason...
i just love my coffee...especially when my fav barista is working...
plus being gluten free THE almond and ginger mini cupcakes are soooo yummy...irresistable...
For fussy coffee lovers...this is a place you should try!

Awesome atmosphere! Great coffee! Delicious nutella & cream cheese bagel!
Elle
Best coffee in Freo. Best atmosphere. I love the fact that you can sit there for hours chatting & won't be bothered or harried to move on by the staff.
Unhealthy Appetite
Best coffee in Freo. Nice little place that really does make the best, and most reasonably priced coffee in Fremantle. Fantastic service as well.
Katherine Hunter
This is a favourite hangout of my friends and I, nipping in for catchups over pots of chai or short traditional macchiatos - definitely our favorites. The salmon bagels are amazing. My friend loves the nutella bagel. Friendly staff who are easy to chat to. Love this place :)
DearMr
Awful coffee. Awful service. What a pity cos it's a cool looking space. Nice little cakes. Again, what a pity. Maybe get your staff trained properly? Teach them how to serve or communicate with customers?
Common.courtesy
Got recommended here. Mehhh... So so... Don't know if it was the coffee or the 'too cool for school' service. It's become a trend in Freo hospitality for some reason. Sad...
Food101
Horrendous customer service. Today i had an awful experience here with very bad service even by Perth standards. After ordering a cappuccino and clarifying that they do normally make them with a proper head of foam (as i've had a run of getting foamless caps lately), i was given a flat white with chocolate dusted on top. Initially i let this go but after scraping away the chocolate i found the weakest cap ever beneath. Basically the colour - and taste - of a latte (or coffee flavoured milk).
Taking it back to the counter and politely explaining the issue, I requested a mac for a replacement. The barista's rude reply was that he wouldn't replace it and if i wanted another coffee i would have to pay. His attitude was that i had ordered the wrong coffee ! Go back to barista training mate - A latte resembling a flat white with choc dusting does not a cappuccino make in anybody's language.

Especially disappointing as i was with my mum so we'd bought 2 coffees plus food.

I voted with my feet and left to get coffee at one of Freo's REAL coffee joints. (And was met with both a great coffee and customer service at Hush by the way)
Laura Bishop
Best coffee in Freo. Love this place. Coffee is VERY consistent and service is always friendly and pleasant. Great nibbles too, in an awesome setting. Buy a book while you're there :)
Evie
Amazing coffee and service! The staff are always friendly and go to the effort of remembering your name. I come here everytime I'm in Fremantle.
Emilia
Best coffee and bagels in town. Literally obsessed! if you dont know this place.....u should!
cant start my day without em'
Mrsginger
Superdeliciousyumyum. Keeps the promises of amazing coffee, cakes and bagels, all worth trying!

Fave coffee in Freo. Awesome every time

Carolyn Karnovsky
I'm not usually a coffee drinker but even I can't resist a coffee by the expert baristas at Grumpy Sailor. They do a mean bagel and their sweets are to die for. Look forward to spending another lazy few hours there next Sunday..
Saul Karnovsky
Best coffee & cheescake EVER!. Love this place!

Coffee is outstanding and the food is super tasty.

Try a bagel then a slice of cheescake - OH YEAH!

Thanks Grumpy's :D
Koolkat1956
The Grumpy Sailor - best coffee & bagels. Tucked inside New Edition bookstore on High Street Fremantle The Grumpy Sailor oozes cool decor, sweet blues & jazz & you'll find the best coffee in Freo (maybe in Perth) and great bagels made fresh every morning. Try the vegetarian version or if you're feeling fishy go the smoked salmon. Finish off with a home baked cake or cookie.
Leave your troubles at the door, relax & enjoy. Keeping it simple works a treat, give the boys a try, you won't be disappointed.
Jsh_eastman
Amazing!. I called in for a coffee and I must say..... This place has hands down, the best coffee I have ever had in Perth.

The staff are excellent and the place has a cool layout and feel. I'll definitely be back.
Foodprints
The Grumpy Sailor is a little coffee shop inside but at that the front of New Edition Bookshop. So keep your eyes open for the New Edition bookshop sign and you'll find it. It's only open for breakfast and lunch but don't expect a full blown cafe with kitchen and hot food. It's a lot more simpler but its perfect that way. You can order a coffee and go for a wander around the store. The baristas and bar people are great because they'll find you when your coffee is ready. And the coffee is really good =)
Rhianna May
Eat some cornbread so that the coffee doesn't create a hole in your stomach lining and begin to ponder if you will ever be able to sleep again.

Collector teaspoons, shortbread and great caffeine. This is the beginning of a long, beautiful friendship.
