Review Mexican Kitchen - Fremantle

AJ Aristei
I took the girls for shopping and brunch in Fremantle. But we couldn't decide which cafe or restaurant to go to on the cappuccino strip ?? We decided on the 'Mexican Kitchen'.. and we're delighted by the colorful decor and the fresh Mexican cuisine. Because of a staff shortage during the pandemic, we were encouraged to order by their app. I thought this may slow things up, but the meals came out very quickly. Try it!!

Had the Beef and Chicken Soft Shell Tacos and the Jalapeno Poppers. The tacos were fresh, with light cheese and tomato to balance the flavours. The slow cooked beef was delicious, even had a few good chunks in there. The poppers were also amazing... couldn't get enough of it. Top quality food and service from this joint.

Richard takes great care of his customers and the food was awesome! The FoH staff were super friendly, the atmosphere was fun, and I'm looking forward to next time. Thanks guys!

Staff is really friendly. Portions are big, vegetarian options are available. Taste and quality of food is general, cheap Margarita on Sundays.
Aldrin McWeen
No flavours, dry and bad taste, didn't enjoy the meal, jug of drink was full of ice only, over crowded, sitting very close to each other, parking is another issue. Friendly staff. Big serve but not appetizing.
Alex Suzanne
Delicious Mexican food, jalapeno poppers are ACTUALLY SPICY!!! All the servers spoke Spanish and were really friendly too. I drive an hour to eat here and never leave disappointed

There was some debate at the table as to whether it's ok for a restaurant to serve things past their best before. šŸ¤” Does the restaurant think it's ok? Do they just not know? Pic taken on the 29th, drink expired on the 28th. The rest of the food was good though, but prices are a bit high. For the price I'd rather eat at Emily Taylor or Gypsy Tapas personally.

Came here after a water through Fremantle Markets and boy was it busy! Had nachos for two, with chicken and avocado. It was a *monster* portion which was great. Nachos usually get old after the first layer or so, and although it was absolutely delicious - cornchips salted to perfection- the middle and lower layers were not melted and as delicious as the top layers. Not sure if it's right or not but the mango cocktail tasted of just lemon and citrus tequila to us... For someone who was expecting a mashup of doritos and cheese, this was a pleasent and enjoyable surprise. 4/5

I was here the same night as the below person , lonnnng wait for dinner and was stifling hot downstairs ... Had to have my meal removed but won't go into details .. Thanks to lovely waitress who not only gave us a discount for delay but comped my meal entirely ... Will have to try again ... :(

Everyone dropping by Fremantle should have a strawberry margarita and chilli con quesco at the Mexican Kitchen. It's the best!
Donna Sevallos
This place has been great everytime we go. Love the dips.

Extremely dissatisfied. After waiting over an hour for our food the food came out so slowly with some being finished before others got their meal. The food was tasteless and stale. The chicken was so dry. Didnā€™t realise Mexican could be stuffed up so badly. Wouldnā€™t recommend this place to anyone.

Fluatas and chorizo tacos are awesome
Kuruppted
Ordered the fish tacos and chorizo tacos but got sent pull pork ones. They were quick to replace it with our original order and allowed us to keep the wrong order too which was nice. The fish taco was really good and the quesadillas were flavourful too. The nachos on the other hand was a major disappointment. Found the place slightly pricey for tex mex but overall was a pleasant experience.

Good food & friendly staff. We were happy with veg option but would need more variety. The mocktails were amazing. Must try nachos black bean itā€™s yummy.
Perthfoodie1269
Very overpriced for what you get, salsa was tasteless and extremely watery, and guacamole very bland as if they only seasoned with salt and nothing else. They have good specials but thatā€™s the only reason I would come here
Missy
Friendly wait staff and even though it was a very busy evening we didnā€™t have to wait too long for food! We would recommend the Grande Enchilada & the El Coyote burrito. My mum was also stoked with her free birthday cocktail (that was huge). Weā€™ve been here 4-5 times now & will continue to keep coming back.
Lisa Waine
Underwhelming to say the least. Had to keep dodging about to catch the eye of a waitress, any would do. Food was nice but no kick. Where was the heat? Corn chips were stale. Overall disappointing. šŸ˜’
Emme
Very cute atmosphere but never had a worse meal out. Seven friends of mine went out for dinner and not one was satisfied with their meal. Would not recommend.

I always joke with my partner that this is the worst restaurant in Perth. Iā€™m sure itā€™s not but itā€™s the worst one we have been to. It is really a shame as the place itself is SO cute, it has such a lovely cosy ambiance and it is in a prime location along Cappuccino Strip. But the food is truly shocking.<br/><br/>First up, chips and salsa. Usually itā€™s hard to go wrong here, but the salsa tasted as if it was made from canned tomatoes two days before. Then we got guacamole, which was so old it was almost brown. Or maybe they just used half bad avocados. Whatever they did, it was so bad we couldnā€™t eat it. I feel thatā€™s pretty inexcusable as it is not hard to make a good, fresh guacamole. Actually itā€™s nearly impossible to make a bad one.<br/><br/>Our main meals were what really topped it off. The beef was like rubber, the vegetables were old, and all the dishes tasted like they had just dumped expired El Paso seasoning on them. It was a shockingly bad meal. <br/><br/>It also didnā€™t help that the staff were unhelpful when I asked about gluten free options and overall seemed pretty miserable to be there. Maybe they had eaten too much expired salsa on their lunch breaks. <br/><br/>I really, really wanted to like Mexican Kitchen and I actually went back a second time, thinking maybe they were just off that first day. The second meal I had there was even worse than the first one. I can confidentially say Iā€™ll not be eating there again nor recommending it.
Keira Renfrey
Only thing going for this place is the location. Found the service to be poor and the food even worse. Would not recommend. Such a shame in such a bustling place as the cappuccino strip.
Sumit Arora
Great little spot,<br/>Excellent service and good food.. great variety of food and beverage <br/>Tables a bit too close to each other but nice ambience overall. <br/>Lovely and friendly staff. <br/><br/>

Had been wanting to try this place for a while. Mexican is one of my fave cuisines... however as is typical in Australia, Mexican food is not done right and this place is no exception. The food was very average, they really only have the location going for them. Wouldn't recommend.
Georgia Heath
This is such a funky place! Ate downstairs and thought it was an awesome atmosphere! The food was DELICIOUS! Will definitely come back again and the staff were lovely also!
Yvonne Bruce
Really friendly staff. Quick service and very fresh tasty food. I had fajitas and my husband had the quesadillas. Good atmosphere. Loved the decor! <br/>Definitely recommend it!

Been here a few times and the food has varied. Perhaps it's been a different cook, but the most recent visit was so-so. The best part was an enchilada and the famous fishbowl cocktails.Ā <br/><br/>Near the top end of the budget, especially if it's a night out with friends, so we don't visit this place too frequently. It has some pretty decent mexican food but depending on who the cook is, it can vary in quality.<br/><br/>The serving staff, however, have always been exemplary and make you feel very welcome. The ambience in the downstairs seating area is wonderful, with sombreros lining the walls and great music playing when it's not too busy (when it's packed you can't really hear it). The candles along the walls are a great touch at night time, and the tequila bar on the top floor is excellently stocked. The bartender is quite knowledgeable, so if you have a question just ask!
Peckas
I ordered the chicken and almond Enchilada as a main dish and was unsatisfied to say the least. The enchilada was very small and tasted rather odd. The side of beans looked very unappealing and tasted like something out of a can. However I did enjoy the spicy rice.
Jesso
cute underground mexican - arrived at 9pm after a late flight knowing it was closing at 10, hoping for a quick feed and catchup with friends & waitresses were rushed to get our order in before the kitchen closed to ensure we were fed! 4 people, shared a range of 5 dishes all great and a jug - i find $40 incredibly overpriced for a jug/fishbowl, could at least be like other places that give money back if you don't keep the bowl
Emerald
Love Mexican cuisine so had to check out the bright place that is the Mex Kitchen <br/><br/>Staff were really friendly and helpful <br/>Food....poppers were good.<br/>Baja Fish Taco...tortillas rubbery - needed to hit the grill first, totally fell apart from moisture white trying to eat , still good tasting. <br/>Nachos... half price on Wed, but so bland, dry. <br/>Guacamole....mission chips and average guacamole - had browned and lacked freshness. <br/><br/>But....its a nice atmosphere, service good, sizes good
Ancke Nienaber
Despite the food being average; the waiting staff are not very friendly. <br/>I was disappointed in the rushed nature in which the waiting staff come to and from my table. They took my food from me when I had not finished it and didn't even ask if I was done. <br/>It's a pitty that a restaurant with such a nice decor atmosphere does not cater with good customer service.
Sam Jackson
Wait staff are lovely as are the drinks but the food is so fucking gross don't bother. The food is dry and obviously not fresh. If it was priced reasonably maybe it could be justified but literally anywhere else in freo would give you better food for less.
Sonya
Have been here a number of times for lunch but came for a big meal on Saturday night. There's no bookings allowed but arrived just before 7 and got a table for two relatively easily. We ordered a small Mad Mex nachos to share to start. Really tasty but most of the nachos has to be eaten with a knife and fork as they fell apart so easily. For mains we had the carne burrito and combination fajitas and ordered waay too much as the servings are very generous! There were just some small changes I felt could be made to both dishes such as the rice being physically in the burrito and having extra sour crĆØme and then the wraps in the fajitas were quite small so you couldn't fit all the filling inside. The prawns weren't the nicest quality either.<br/>Besides this we had a really enjoyable night and loved the eclectic Mexican themed dĆ©cor!
Doc
A great spot for friends to meet; many affordable meals & the decor is awesome. Food can be a big average, though - ie my friend got the mex nachos, which were just overpacked with shredded meat. Highly recommend their fajita dishes though! You get large portion sizes for your money & the value is often on par with the cost.
Frankie
Came here some couple of months ago and got the macho. The chicken was minimal and also smelt like fish and tasted wierd but not chicken. Not sure if it was off and was ill the next day. The tacos my girlfriend got were average and the guacamole was average too. Chips were nothing special. The girl that served us was really nice and welcoming. I wouldn't return here.
Erin Dickson
The food is always great, and there are a few options for vegetarians such as the veggie fajitas and a couple of the quesadillas. The decor is cute and rustic and the place has an almost "dive" feel which adds to the ambience. Usually the service is excellent although the last time we were here the waitresses were sitting off looking bored which is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, I feel like even if it's quiet you should be keeping yourself busy - just a personal preference
Chels Badger
Really good cocktails.<br/>It's expensive but the meals are huge so worth what you pay for them. The nachos could easily feed two people without a worry.
Angela.sikaloski
Amazing cocktails šŸ™ŒšŸ¼šŸ™ŒšŸ¼šŸ™ŒšŸ¼šŸ™ŒšŸ¼ Chilli con quest dip and the chilli con carne dip are to die for!!! Meal servings are HUGE! Great value for money. Kitchen Nachos are so yum, my favourite, but the re fried beans are always very dry and I can never find the chilli con carne that's supposedly in it?
Sandhya1814
Portion size is huge here! I ordered 2 soft tortilla of fish and black bean, was full by the end of it! Didnt even get an entree thankfully as i hate to waste my food. But the food was amazing. My only issue with this place that i gave it a low rating is because of its service. The wait staff didnt look after my friend and me at all, we had to get our water on our own and call her many times. She seemed more interested in other things. We wont even informed abt the specials or the promotions they were having for Thursday. But overall, foods good and my tummy is happy! šŸ˜

Always a special on the menu worth dropping in for! Have always had dinners downstairs and mex kitchen always seem to be able to accommodate for big and small tables really well! On this occasion though popped in for a quick lunch and was met with a welcoming smile, some cocktail specials, nachos and a quesadilla which were all delicious.
Mimi
Great place to dine out! But the nachos were terrible! The worst nachos I have ever had in my life! No sauce, no avo, old dry chicken that tasted like paper! Plus I've waited for a plate of nachos for an hour! Not going there ever again!

Came here for dinner last night with the family. Little princess had been pestering for a Mexican meal and we thought to give this place a go. We have been going to its neighbour next door, Capri, for meals and have walked past this place whenever we are there. We arrived just before 7pm and were fortunate to get a table near the windows where we could get fresh breeze to cool us on a hot evening. This place got really busy after as groups of customers kept pouring in and many were ushered to the dining area in the basement. We ordered a regular macho nachos, a grande enchiladas and a steak and de pollo fajitas. We didn't know how big the servings were and thought that a dish each plus nachos would be enough. We were wrong. We over-ordered. There were 3 of us and we should have skipped on one of the fajitas. The nachos servings were big. Melted cheese on corn chips with olives sprinkled on top and there were minced chicken meat sandwiched between the nachos. This could have been a meal on its own. When the rest of the meal came, the small table where we were at was too small to fit all the food plus the drinks and the plates given for each to roll the tortillas. Not an issue though as we moved the drinks onto an empty chair.Ā  The tortillas were soft and that made rolling them really easy depending on how much stuffing you put in them. Each dish was well cooked, the rice were fluffy enough and the meats tasty. Little princess loved her meal last night. She liked that she could roll her own tortillas and putting whatever stuffings she wanted. We couldn't finish our meal and had to pack the rest home.Ā  The wait staff who served us last night were friendly and pleasant to deal with.Ā  It was an enjoyable meal for us and we will definitely come back again.

Went with a group of 8, we just ordered the entire EntrƩe menu and passed that around between us.<br/>Food was flavourful and in generous servings. The EntrƩes are the size of mains!<br/>Fishbowls are typical of what you'd expect.<br/>Service was friendly and had the foresight to bring the dishes out over the evening instead of all at once.<br/>Will go again.
Melanie Cook
Amazing amazing food - so delicious (mouth watering good) - portions were quite large so be careful to not over order. Great service, and great atmosphere! Good value for money. Highly recommend!
LittleGirlBigFood
Great margaritas . Great food. Relatively authentic but not the same as in California and mexico. Close to though. I recommend for younger adults party's who like a good drink.
Rochelle
I really enjoy dining at the Mexican Kitchen. The decor is fun, the staff are always friendly. I've never had a meal I haven't enjoyed, and usually just order the Taquito's as they are always delicious. I also really enjoy the cocktails. So much choice which is great. <br/><br/>Looking forward to my next meal at the Mex!
Steve Brewster
The Con Queso is unreal, literally could live off of it.<br/><br/>Margheritas are really good, the tommys is amazing.<br/><br/>Authentic Flavour, huge portion sizes, great atmosphere & accomodating staff.
Sally Carr
I came here and thought I would be able to get some chips and salsa and relax in a good location! Boy was I wrong!!<br/>Chips were hard and definitely not homemade. Salsa was lacking flavor and I had to ask for lime and salt to make it edible!<br/>We also ordered tacos, taquitos and had rice which all weren't tasty at all.<br/>I wouldnt eat here again, the cook really needs to add more spices and love to the dishes!<br/>So sad as great location and staff were nice!<br/>Way over priced tho chips and salsa $12!?!<br/><br/>Extremely disappointed.<br/><br/>
The Iron Fist
Best Mexican Food In The World. The Chicken Macho Nachos are the bomb and their Chicken Enchilada Is a 10. Definitely The Best Place In Freo.
MJ Amerito
Nice place. Food is okay, but hard to rate highly when price is taken into consideration. It's very expensive for the ingredients used especially for the vego options all being bean based. Wait staff are lovely. I got the wrong meal and they were very helpful in fixing it up.
Fresh Prince Of Bel End
As a big fan of Mexican cuisine, this place has a terrific atmosphere and tasty menu. Great value for money in terms of food quality and portion size. Not the most authentic Mexican restaurant but very tasty enchiladas :) Shame I live so far away from it, but I do intend on returning next time I'm near Freo.

Went here last night (Saturday night) with 5 friends. Service was great, they sat us at a table almost immediately. Our waiter was lovely and polite. The food is so affordable with HUGE servings (even their 'entree size' options were massive). Some servings were so big we couldn't finish so our waiter happily put it in a take home container for us. And they do split billing with no complaints. So impressed with this place, will absolutely be back!!
Joe
We were very disappointed with the quality of food, and felt like idiots paying $70 for our meals that we wouldn't feed to our cat. The nachos were terrible, the chicken tasted like canned tuna and the tortilla chips were a soggy pile of mush. The rib eye steak was dry, tough and bland, apart from the flavour of blood that also soaked into the bed of rice.
Ben Goodman
I like all the stuff on the walls and the atmosphere downstairs. The nachos are not great but they are huge serves. did not rate the tacos at all tbh. great drink options tho
Conor
We went on a Tuesday night for half priced nachos. For $12, the plate was enormous and I couldn't even finish half of them. The chips were topped with beans, slow cooked beef and vibrant salsa. We also got a fishbowl cocktail to share which was called the Freo Doctor. Nice and strong, so we got our money's worth. But the best part of the night were the trio of dips for entree. We had the tomato salsa, refried beans and guacamole, with an extra cheese dip as well. All were delicious and came with ample corn chips. I could have had just chips and dips as a meal. Great Mexican that leaves you truly satisfied
LS
Very underwhelming. The Nopales Quesadilla had almost no white cheese, with the filling primarily containing green 'no pales' (cactus) and one piece of capsicum. The avocado salsa verde was lacklustre. Large serving but thats where the positives ended. For $21 it was terribly overpriced whilst being a huge let down. The guac, cheese dip and salsa was nothing outstanding, but the cream cheese stuffed jalapeƱos were great.
THE ILLUSIVE FEMME
Tasty Mexican in Fremantle, not the most authentic but you always have a good night out at the Mex. Great cocktail list, staff and owners are lovely and want you to have a good time! Love the Quesadilla with Chicken. The Chilli Con Queso dip is also pretty good and can't pass up the Fajita Board!
Mo Loves Chilli
Waited 1 hour for an entree nachos!!<br/>Lack of flavour <br/>Charged for sour cream<br/>Waste of time!!!<br/>Only thing going for this place are the pleasant waitresses, unfortunately that doesn't make me feel like coming back anytime soon
Dave Howie
Had mexican here and found the meals were huge. Myself and my partner each ordered a meal...she ordered the nachos and i had the enchiladas. We finished the enchiladas however couldnt quite get through the nachos. Both meals were really tasty as well, with a good amount of spice. Our new default mexican restaurant in Perth.
Sara Chloe Jones
THE WORST MEXICAN EVER! Friendly staff and all, but very average food! Meant to be mexican however it wasn't even hot! P.S get a cleaner in those toilets ASAP, I think some one got the lucky dip!
Lauren Gillies
Best mexican ive ever had, i regulary come here for the fajitas. Mocktails are also amazing. Great ambiance and decor. Always leave full and satisfied
Kiwifella1987
Only good thing about this place is the location. Was there a while back and I wouldn't recommend. The chicken was more like tuna from a can, the nachos were horrible and the burrito wasn't anything to write home about. And then the staff member told us "no one else has a problem with the food", seemed a bit arrogant when 6/6 of us were unhapppy with our meals.
CiderCraze
Was in Fremantle and decided to try something new. Mexican Kitchen is definitely a pleasant surprise. Love the decor and the service. Portion is huge and we thoroughly enjoyed our dishes.
Gemima
I'd come back just for the atmosphere. That being said only in the downstairs area. The food served is always the same, something to rely on if you know what you want. The mexi plate is a winner for me and grande enchilada for my partner. Never miss out on the chilling con queso!! The tacos and nachos aren't so flash
Laura_dawn89
Went downstairs! Really like the decor! Entree was a deep fried tortila with chicken in it! Was pretty tasty! Main me and my main man got a sizzling fajita dish each (i got beef he got chick) was very good! I really do love that way of eating! Sharing and making your own! Coconut tequila cocktail was delicious! Cant wait to go back!
Bahweep Granahweep Ninnybong
have been here several times, food is usually the same. either not that great but not that bad either. so average marks.<br/>prefer the downstairs seatings. but lunch sometimes outdoors. YMMV may vary dependant on specials/time of day.<br/><br/>overall, have had a lot worse and no major complaints so far.
Dpizzy
Disgusting food that was just microwaved and reheated. It gave me a stomach ache and just the thought of this place now makes me sick. Do your self a favour and never eat here.
Brekkyboi
Nachos half price Tuesday's will always be a hit. Used to work there myself, and you can always count on one of Singh or Simran's dishes!!!!
Fred
Went for the half price nachos on tuesday service was ok as was the food nothing to rave about. For what we paid it was as expected. I wouldnt go and pay full price for the nachos.
Emma Gough
Staff and food *thumbs down*. My husband and I were seated. No one took a drinks order for us while we looked at the menu. We clearly were ready to order and the staff were standing around chatting together. Finally after forcibly making eye contact with one of the girls our order was taken. Our drinks weren't brought to the table. I had to ask for someone to bring them when they didn't arrive with our food. The prawn fajitas were yummy. The chicken tacos, awful, the tacos were stale. When we got up to pay, I stood at the cashier for a few minutes before someone appeared to take our payment. She didn't even speak to me, just stood behind the register and told me what I owed. Only after she took my money and was handing me the receipt did she finally say, "how was your meal?" I said it was fine and just suggested that maybe a plate to accompany the fajita ingredients to actually make your fajitas on would be helpful. I was told rudely, you could have just asked for one. I wasn't worried because I just shared a plate with my husband. But it was the response to the suggestion that made me think, if you didn't want feeback, why did you ask?! Definitely won't recommend and won't be back.

Overall, a good experience. My colleague & I sat downstairs and we had prompt & friendly service from the waitress. I loved the colourfully painted walls and bright decor. Would be a great place to go with a group for a celebration. It is far from the best Mexican food I've had but it was still delicious. We shared guacamole with a generous serve of corn chips (nothing worse than not having enough!) and I had the chilli bean burrito which could have used some guacamole on it so I just added it from our entree leftovers. I enjoyed myself so if you're not too much of a Mexican food snob, they get everything else right. Give it a go before you judge :)
Shannon Pearce
Terrible. I use to love this place, def wouldn't recommend to anyone. 5 bad meals out of 5, pretty sad when we all ordered something different!

Not great. My partner and I were visiting Fremantle for my 45th birthday. We were having a great weekend. I love Mexican food. Unfortunately we were made to feel like criminals. The waitress asked for a card in case we did a runner because we were sitting at an outside table. My boyfriend is black, I am wondering if it were just me eating alone, would they have asked for my card. We should have just left then and there but I really love Mexican food. Anyway, I wish we had left. The nachos were extremely disappointing. I make nicer nachos at home. Mexican Kitchen nachos had no flavour. No Mexican spices. Mainly a big plate of nachos with cheese. Couldn't even eat half it was such a dry argument. Won't be going back. No other cafe in Fremantle asked for a card as a security bond that weekend and we dined outside at every single one of them. The mojito cocktail was very disappointing also. Tasted like I was drinking a can of solo. Nothing special here.

Hit and miss. Dined here for saturday lunch, staff are very nice nd helpful but by george this place is a hit or miss!! Have dined before and the meals have been fine but this time my husband and I ordered one beef and once chicken taco, soft shell. It came out so watery it was disgusting! I squished down the meat and all this liquid leaked out. The shells fell apart and the whole inside was cold.<br/><br/>The waitress was very nice and asked me how things were and I told her, and she offered to replace, but you know once you eat something disgusting you kind of want to get the heck outta there. She didnt charge me which i thought was a nice gesture.<br/><br/>Would I eat here again, absolutely not after that experience.
Mezza999
Mexican. Nacho's are big but not enough mince!<br/><br/>Punch bowl drinks are awesome thoe
Jamienslade
Good service, bad food. Portion size and service were excellent.<br/>Same cant be said for the quality of the food. Tomato paste and olives did not enhance the lack of flavour of the nachos. The bean puree on the side of the enchilada was tasteless, and the crunch of the almonds didn't make up for lack of flavour.<br/>The nopales in the quesadilla tasted like they were pickled.<br/>There was no option to enhance the spiciness of any dish.<br/>The drinks menu didn't list the alcohol content of the beers, while not illegal, it didn't differentiate between mid and full-strength beers.
LifestyleByLily
I like the setting and the menu, there is an option for everyone.<br/>I had the Chicken Quesadilla, it was delicious and filling! <br/>Overall, a pleasant visit!

Was here on a Thursday night. The food was great. Service was fast and friendly. <br/>It was a bit crowded with the tables so close together, but it is a small place. <br/>I had beef burrito, and the beef was so tender and flavourful. <br/>My friend had the vegetarian burrito and it was so colourful and fresh looking. Would recommend this to someone for a casual meal with friends and family.

Good night out. We fancied a bit of Mexican thought we'd stop by. Seated immediately, drinks were out in a flash. Huge choice from the menu. We started with three dips (guacamole, salsa, chilli con queso) which were good, especially the cheese dip which the waitress suggested. Based on another review we wanted to try the Mushroom Flautas, which were really nice but much bigger than I had thought they would be. The portion sizes here are massive. By the time our mains came (Santa Clara, Burrito Colorado and Mad Mex Nachos) we were all stuffed. My husband thought his nachos were a bit dried out, but not so much he didn't like them.<br/><br/>The delightful waitress packed up our leftovers to take home with no fuss. She gave us wonderful service. We'll be back but will order less next time. Think our eyes were bigger than our stomachs last night...

Being vegan it's terribly hard to eat out and Mexican is no exception HOWEVER! today took hubby for lunch and the staff were lovely and helpful, menu offered vege, vegan and meat dishes. For the first time in ages I actually felt full! <br/><br/>I had a vege tortilla with rice and beans and avocado dip...beauty!<br/><br/>Hubby had burrito with chargrilled beef, avocado dip, rice and beans and he loved it. <br/><br/>Had the most delicious salad too. <br/><br/>Was an absolute treat, thanks guys.
Cornflake_enchantress
>>. Everything tastes like fish. That was the worst buerito I have ever had.
Sunshine
Gross!!! Save your money. Such terrible food & service. Didn't receive cocktails ordered ended up cancelling drinks as we had all attempted to finish our meals and we're ready to move on... Bad food, bad service, bad toilets, bad dining choice... Go elsewhere!!
Sharonincalgary
Disappointing. My husband and I hardly get a chance to go out for dinner so, we were pretty disappointed when we ate at this restaurant. This was the worst Mexican food we have ever eaten at. The service was awful and the drinks were really expensive. My husband had the tacos and they had so little meat in them. After eating here, we started making our own Mexican food at home.
BD
Fantastic. If you have a hankering for mexican food then look no further. Went on a Weds and had the beef fajitas special and nachos. Fajitas were delicious, lots of tasty tender beef strips and a good amount of lettuce, cheese, sour cream and sauce. Nachos were huge but not just a pile of corn chips, the cheese beans and sauce were layered through the stack as they should be.<br/>Not sure why the number negative reviews... honestly this was just what we were after !!!

Inedible. This has been our Mexican "fix" of choice for over 20 years. The menu changed several years ago and I lost my old favourite, Pollo Chicken (half a baked Mexican style chicken)....yum! Then the place went off for a while but came back again a few years ago. One of our friend's new boyfriends is an affection-ado of Mexican food and we had no hesitation in recommending the Mexican Kitchen to the happy couple. Bad mistake, our friend, who is no mean cook and knows about food came back with the inedible verdict. One mouthful each and it went back to the kitchen, no apologies, no refund, narda. So they left feeling pretty peed off. We gave it a try this weekend hoping it was just a bad night for them or they were being too picky.....we're easier to please. Wrong, it was utter crap and truly inedible, well you could eat it if you were desperate, be it will be a long time before we are that desperate. Goodbye dear friend, we'll be back again in 5 years to see if you reinvented yourselves again. Or maybe not. I feel sorry for the chatty and nice waitresses who deserve a better fate than irate diners.

Give it a miss. I'd have to say this is the most critical review I have ever written but honestly have to say there are enough Mexican places in Freo now to give this one a miss.<br/>Went there last week for a quick bite before the movies and my friend and I ordered two nachos. Me the chicken, her the vegetarian. Priced between $20-$24 thought the upper end of the range but the size was excellent for the price. If only it had been edible!!! These were both the worst nacho's we have ever eaten. There is no point in piling up the corn chips if the sauces (what there was of it) are so sparce and dry that you might as well have opened a packet of CC's and enjoyed it more. So disapointed. Its a competitive market guys, you need to lift your game

After waiting 1.5 hours for food we left without eating very disappointing.

I love how they have 3 types of fish tacos and by that I mean that the fish beef and chicken tacos all taste like fish and if you haven't had enough fish tasting food then get the nachos because all the nachos taste like fish too

What a DISGRACE!!!. We attended the Mexican Kitchen to celebrate my nieces 18th Birthday Party, and from the onset our waitress, who looked as if she had the weight of the world on her shoulders, was patronizing and condescending...everything seemed to be an effort for her.<br/> <br/>At one point, she, the waitress, motioned to our group to keep the noise down and eventually came over to our table and said ā€œplease keep the noise down as there are other patrons here, not just your group"..Why?....because we were singing Happy Birthday!!!...REALLY!!...Admittedly, it may have been a little loud, but who doesn't sing Happy Birthday with some gusto.<br/> <br/>The food was substantial, but subpar, it tasted as if it had been reheated from canned goods and with very little taste/creativity.<br/> At the end of the evening we were met with the cashier to finalise the bill, who I can only surmise, had also been to the same patronizing/ condescending school of disdain for restaurant patrons as her colleague, the waitress, where upon some members of our party who were inspecting the total bill discovered that someone, had increased the meals on our already expensive tab, with additional items, that we in fact had not even ordered or received, which she eventually removed, begrudgingly I might add, but with a great performance and pushing her rhetoric..."well someone must of had it" and ā€œsomeone has to pay for itā€ with a great amount of confidence and conviction displayed only from an individual who may have attempted this in the past.<br/> <br/>A special night that was completely ruined by Two (2) individuals........NEVER AGAIN!!!!

I did not like it here because my chicken nachos tasted and looked like tuna it was weird and my fish tacos didn't have much flavour it was weird

Went here at 835pm on a Sunday night of a long weekend to be greeted at the door and told the kitchen was closed as it had been a crazy night and there wasn't much left?!?! She then pointed us in the direction of another Mexican restaurant, ridiculous! Typical Perth :$

Used to be an old favorite but not anymore. Such a shame. Has the chef changed? No flavor, so so bland! Cook better nachos myself. And $22 for nachos with no guacamole? Pretty steep guys! 2nd bad experience in a row. Won't be back. Go to mad mex instead.

Best steak fajita ever! Drinks are AMAZING. But the nachos and mince meat? EUCK. Don't even bother! Stay away from those 'delicacies'<br/>I used to go here all the time, I think it's more just a place for a fish bowl or two and some of their average warm guacamole!

A few amazing dishes hidden amongst some pretty bad ones. Firstly the margaritas are delicious but it's difficult to stuff those up. Tried a few things on the menu and found that the mushroom flautas (mushrooms rolled in tortillas and deep-fried, yes, tastes as amazing as it sounds!), the quesadillas and the black bean tacos are all great. Most of the other vego options are less than amazing. The rice is always dry and bland so I generally avoid anything served with them. The potato enchiladas are pretty horrible, being just wrapped up potato with way too much cheese on top, very little spice or flavour. Recently tried the vegetarian kitchen nachos and was fairly disappointed (well, until I got to the soggy part at the bottom and then my love of chilaquiles took over). Tried the dips once, wouldn't order again. Frankly, I've got my favourites and it's enjoyable when I'm out drinking in Freo and just want some food that isn't a kebab and I get to have a jug of margaritas to share. <br/><br/>Also, what's with the "side salad" of shredded cabbage and large chunks of chilli? That's just like some kind of nasty practical joke...

Disapointing. Was hoping to get some decent Mexican food last Friday when we stopped in for lunch as this seems to be hard to find in Perth (can anyone help with suggestions??) but unfortunately this was not to be it.<br/><br/>The waitress who served us throughout was great, friendly without being fake and was helpful, didn't need to take notes of our orders either which is usually a good sign that someone knows hospitality. <br/><br/>Fell a bit flat with the food though. The margaritas that came out were huge but you could definitely taste that cheap booze was used. We ordered a taco each to start, I had fish my partner pork. The fish was SO hot whereas the pork wasn't at all despite the pork mentioning spicy sauce in the menu and the fish didn't? They leaked heaps of liquid over our hands and plates too, not sure if the meat needed to rest before serving or what. We had the 'Flautas' rolled tortillas with beef, deep fried. These were the highlight but even then not amazing. Served with large portions of sour cream and salsa they were okay. Lastly the nachoes...YUCK. They came with 'special nacho sauce' which just tasted liked pureed tinned tomatoes or a jar of pasta sauce, bland, not heat at all, no flavour at all for that matter! Black olives throughout and we ordered a side of guacamole - again bland, needed a big squeeze of lemon juice and maybe some diced red onion or jalapenos. Plus the sauce is mixed in with the chips and then seemingly baked with cheap cheese on top so the corn chips that aren't sticking out the side are all soggy :( didn't even eat half of these was quite gross.<br/><br/>Went to pay, a different waitress served us here which was a shame as she was a bad as the other was good, barely made eye contact, didn't great us or ask how the meal was - a shame as I was happy to share my views - and instead just told us the price, didn't even check the items we had or anything. Not even sure if she thanked us or what...not good at all.<br/><br/>For $73 for lunch (yes including cocktails but still...) would expect much much more. Very disappointed as had hoped this would become our local.

I'm in conflict as to whether or not to hit the 'like' button. Service was great and staff were accommodating and very friendly. BUT the food, this was questionable. My mother and I shared nachos (which were average). I had a burrito which I enjoyed, but my mother's fajita beef was extremely, extremely tough. Prices are quite high. <br/>Although the service was perfect, I think ten food leaves a lot to be desired. Nonetheless, wonderful Mexican atmosphere to the place.

Worst nachos. Food mediocre, lacked freshness, for the main meal I ordered beef nachos and they were horrible, left in the heat for so long cheese was burnt and browned and not nicely melted and the jalapenos had dried out attached like dry glue on the nachos . Towards the middle of our meal, the waiter came to find out as if we had finished as she was keen to take the plates away. not a very nice place to diner if you are after a good mexican meal.

Unhappy with food. Wouldn't recommend this place, the chicken burrito tastes and looks like it has tuna in it. my friend ordered nachos, they were also terrible very dry chili con carne
LGFantastic
Nice meal. We enjoyed our food, it was a busy night and staff were rushed but I like the cellar atmosphere - very cosy.
Richard
Half price nachos Tuesday night worth a visit but food quality can change each visit.
Carrie
Terrible food. Very Over priced. Staff unfriendly.

If you want Chicken Nacho's, this IS the place!

Cat food kitchen. Heard really good reviews for this place so thought we would give it a try. Never again. Ordered chicken burritos only to find that the so called chicken was shredded tuna cat food. Couldn't eat it, spent the first 10 minutes wondering if we had ordered a tuna burrito. Pureed tuna and rice. yum. But the wraps were good ;). Come here if you like nice wraps and tuna cat food.

Don't do it very disappointing .<br/>Family of four , we all left our dishes beef was tough ,chicken was tough and the kids burritos were meant to have no chilli and neither one of my boys could eat there dinner because it was to hot for them .<br/>Staff arrogant with service.

Fairly ambivalent about this. Had a very good margarita (only $10 on Sundays), but the food was pretty average. No vegan options at all, so I opted to have black bean tacos without the cheese or sour cream. The soft tortilla was a bit soggy, and there was seemingly little effort put into making up for the omitted ingredients with more of what was on there. The black beans were fairly tasty but more salsa would've been great. More vegan options, please - or vegan substitutes for the veggie options available. More guac, salsa, verde, or even jalapeƱos ... Surely doable? The service was very friendly, though, and the interior was cheerfully kitsch.

Food was cold, very average, and it took 25 minutes to prepare! Just for a taco! Chicken looks cooked not grilled, and it didn't taste good. Not intending to go back.

Food was average at best and overpriced. We ordered con queso (which was quite good) and some soft tortillas to share and ended up dropping it all over the table as we did not receive any side plates and were practically ignored when we tried to hail our waitress. We eventually got some ourselves from a side board, perhaps it shouldn't be table service? Our Margarita jug has little to no tequila in it and just as a side note, I'm not a prude but the waitress was wearing bottom skimming shorts with heavily ripped and laddered black stockings underneath...not a good look

Must go!. I love this place, the decor is cool and the food awesome, servings are generous! I first had the tacos here and have had them every time I've been back. Finally got my die hard Zapatas friend to join me to show him what real mexican food should taste like and he loved it. Loved the chicken fajitas and can't wait to taste the rest of the menu!
