Review The Ajrak Restaurant - Fremantle

Harper Olase
For the first time, I ate snacks and paid attention to them for a long time. I liked Milk Yellow-wrapped Honey Fork-roast. Burning wheat was really tired of me. The whole service was very good and the empty dish of tea was withdrawn immediately. Continuation is obviously not a grade of speed and first serving. Finally, we embezzled several pictures of netizens, the same thing, different photography technology

The food was nice and fresh. We will try it again for sure.

Absolutely loved the food here. One of the best Indian restaurants I've tried in Perth. The vindaloo's flavour was well balanced and the chicken nihala was cooked nice and tender. The portions were big and generous. The staff was also very friendly. Will definitely be back. Did not expect much at first when we made the booking as there were a few bad reviews floating around the web. Definitely don't believe everything you read on the web. The chef proved them wrong this time.

Excellent flavoursome curries that are hard to find on anyone's else's menu. Great buffet too! If I want well-made, unique tasting curries, this is the place I visit. Best in town

Well i ordered food through UberEats so i wont be able to comment on service and ambiences

The food i had ordered was the aloo tikka, lamb briyani, chicken nihari and pilao rice. I loved the aloo tikka and the chicken nihari, very flavoursome and well balanced. The Pilao Rice, smelled so good and it was really tasty. The lamb briyani wasnt anything special though, felt like rice mixed with lamb curry.
Overall, i enjoyed my meal in the comfort of my home 😁 was satisfied!

I went with my 10 friends for dinner and enjoy a lot specially with Nihari and qorma .The taste was amazing and reasonable price . Nice background music and friendly staff .will plan for dinner again .

Had a great meal, at a terrific price. Every dish was flavourful and interesting. I went with friends who had been there before and are connoisseurs of Freo's best eateries, and was a little surprised at the unprepossessing appearance of the place. Not hipster service, but efficient, pleasant and polite. Quiet enough that we had both a great meal and a very good discussion over dinner. I'll go back, and recommend it to all.

Dined in with my other half using a Scoopon for an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner that was advertised as offering over 40 dishes of entrees, mains and desserts.

Arrived at prime dinner time (6.45pm). We were shown to the dining area and despite having reserved (and later confirmed) a table at least 2 weeks in advance, discovered that there was no designated reserved table.

We were not provided with any service whatsoever, and had to ask about the drinks that were provided with the deal, and the actual deal itself. We were told to help ourselves to drinks in the fridge.

On our first visit to the buffet, there was barely any food available - Just remnants of dried up fried potato slices. Assuming that the buffet would be refreshed fairly promptly, we returned to our table to await the next 'round' of food.

On our subsequent visits to the buffet throughout the next hour and a half/two hours, there was barely any food that was refreshed, and if there was, due to the number of people partaking in the buffet, the quantity of food was severely inadequate to cater for a full (or even any) seating of buffet patrons. The bain marie was kept fairly much empty throughout the night, despite having a restaurant full of patrons dining in specifically for the buffet.

My other half was fortunate to try a very small portion of the butter chicken, lamb rogan josh and beef curry on offer, however, I was only fortunate enough to try the dried up entrees and an insignificant portion of beef curry. There were only leftover sauces of the curries on offer throughout the entire night.

My other half wanted a second portion of food, however, returned to the table with an empty plate.

We were left unattended the entire night.

The table beside us stormed off in disgust - We witnessed the male patron purchasing take away from another establishment in the same street.

This meal was to celebrate a birthday - We left severely and bitterly disappointed and angry, having wasted our hard earned money and a special birthday occasion. Appalling, dismal and not impressed. Firmly not recommended.

From what i can see in the reviews probably a blessing we didn't eat there anyway... i purchased a scoopon late last year and just went to book in and apparently it's 2 weeks expired so i can't use it. How very unAustralian, being a business owner myself if somebody has paid for a voucher the customer is given the service. My cash hasn't expired, they are still able to use it!! Really disappointing and detrimental to your business not being accommodating to new customers.

My partner and I used a scoopon/groupon (can't remember which one it was) for the buffet here. First of all the place looked a bit tacky but hey, some of the best meals I've had have come from tacky looking places. I was looking forward to some good Indian food but boy did we leave unhappy. So, reasons I'm not a fan of here. A cockroach ran across the reception desk when we arrived, ok no worries this could happen anywhere I thought.... not a problem. I found the service non existent, we were told to pick a table and then we weren't spoken to again. Staff didn't even come to see if we wanted drinks or anything. Some of the dishes I just couldn't stomach and it was nothing to do with spice/heat. No music or anything on in the background, I don't want to here every single tables conversation.... I found it quite awkward. So anyway, we couldn't wait to leave. Very disappointing.

This was my 3rd visit to this lil eatery in Fremantle. It was the 1st time we tried the buffet and the food wasn't up to the mark. I was told that 8pm was late and next time we should visit early. Restaurant was 1/3 full and the available dishes in buffet were just OK with nothing special to be mentioned.

We bought a scoopon and made bookings as required. This was for a buffet. Not sure if the other good reviews using scoopon was for the buffet. We arrived on time as per our booking. From the time we arrived, up to an hour later into the meal, half the buffet trays had no more food left. It was just some leftover curry gravies. No white rice, no saffron rice! Each time they add some naan bread it was gone within 2 mins. This is because there so many diners and all waiting for the bread and rice. There were some beef curry but no chicken curry was replaced until more than an hr later. And the chicken was cold! We were not served any Papadams (altho' we did notice other earlier diners had a basket). We were not served any tea or soft drinks as promised in the Scoopon. No choices of dessert at all. We have tried several scoopon with Indian restaurants in Perth and they were all great. This is the most disappointing scoopon deal we have ever had.

We went on a Tuesday night with a Scoopon voucher. Ajrak would have got a 0 from us, but it deserves 0.5 star for the variety of dishes, and 0.5 star for the complimentary bottled mineral water on every table (from Coles, but I suspect it may have been a refilled bottle, top appeared to be loose....).
Everything else, sadly, was pretty dismal. The young guy who greeted us (manager? waiter?) was friendly, and was keen to get our feedback when we left, but his clothes were food-stained, not a good look.
Plenty of seating, but only one other table with 3 diners while we were there, and 1 table laden with dirty dishes when we arrived, and still laden with dirty dishes when we left (??!!). The 2 staff appeared to spend the whole time chatting out the back, oblivious to the table which desperately needed its food scraps whisked away.
The food? Huge variety, most of it semi-congealed or virtually desiccated from obviously quite some time languishing in the bain-marie, which was inadequate for the job of keeping the food warm. Half the dishes were lukewarm at best (some were actually cold), a few were warm, borderline hot, NONE were hot.
Taste? Pretty bland for Indian food, although the vindaloos, which were not really "Indian-hot", were spicy enough to get our noses running slightly.
Dessert was a couple of sad-looking gulab jamuns in a cold bain-marie, the other table partook but we weren't game.
The decor was neat, but the whole place looked like someone had started renovating then ran out of puff halfway through. There were 2 bookshelf speakers perched high up near the ceiling, but not a peep issued out of them all evening.

The young guy, to his credit, took on board our comments re the lukewarm food (he asked us what we thought of the food as we were leaving, so we suggested he do something about the tepid dishes next time). If they get their bain marie sorted, and spend a bit more time being more attentive to the customers, then perhaps the Ajrak would be worth a visit in the future.

Definitely not recommended if the food and service don't improve.

Authentic pakistani food. Their breakfast is a must try with authentic pakistani poori chanay and halwa. Awesome people and good service too.

I can make better indian food at home. Disappointing!

Delivery was right on time and the food piping hot. I ordered the Aloo Paratha, Goan fish curry and Shahi Paneer to have with rice. The Shahi Paneer was a standout and I would happily order again. The others were good but not outstanding (so little fish!). Impressed by the Menulog experience - great option for home delivery in the Freo/Bicton/Palmyra area.

Authentic, quality, no nonsense restaurant. For anyone who really hates restaurants that try to be a concept rather than an eatery, this is the place for you. This is a wonderfully unpretentious place and runs rings around many more expensive curry houses in Perth. All the food I have had is fantastic. I particularly recommend the vindaloo and chicken nihari if you like food with a bit of punch. The staff are friendly and efficient. It's inexpensive and it's BYO (it's even just across the road from the Bottle shop which is an even bigger plus). Thanks guys and see you again soon.

Wonderful tasty meal. Had a superb meal at the restaurant last night. Delicious taste and very fresh. Also very reasonably priced and BYO. Would give it highest recommendation
Jennyrobb10
Great food and service. Ordered 6 different starters, 7 main meals and beads with a group of friends. Every dish was beautiful. Great service and BYO was an added bonus.

Fantastic flavours. Really like the flavours in both curries we tried. Although not enough of the tender beef in vindaloo container. Overall, it was reasonable value, friendly service and free delivery on time. Will try again...

Looking past the decor the food here was absolutely delicious, bursting with flavour and served with an authentic smile. We were using a scoopon and were refreshed to be greeted and seated as a full paying customer. Its BYO so deliberated over the extensive but varied menu with a glass of my favourite red. For entree we choose the Chicken Haleem (a slow cooked chicken and lentil stew/soup) which was a highlight of the evening and of course....onion bhajis. We scoffed that down with the complimentary popadoms and it was great timing for our main's to arrive of which consisted of chicken tikka masala, butter chicken and two homemade garlic naan's perfect to dipping in the sauce. Both main's were mild but full flavoured and tender chicken. Perfect
The Gaz N Laz
Definitely not the worst Indian restaurant in Fremantle. Goan fish curry could have been cooked out more, but the beef madras was lovely. Don't let the surrounds fool you about the flavor.
Grandpa
Yummy. We ordered 4 different curries and they all taste yummy. Service was very good the waitress always had a smile on her face.
Tushar_r_panda
Nice restaurant good food. Would hightly recomend the shahi paneer and royal fish korma.

The chicken biriyani needs improvement. In desserts the gulab jamun was awesome.

Would definitely recomend it to friends. Thank you.

Great flavoursome cooking!. As with other reviews, look past the decor! We had a lovely meal here, the best flavoursome curry that we've tasted in Perth. We had a Scoopon, we'd like to think the entrees might have been a bit more generous in size had we not had the voucher, otherwise they did seem pricey. We'd recommend Ajrak to our friends and we would return, delicious.

We bought a scoopon for 4 people to Ajrak and were not disappointed. Dont be fooled by the tired decor, the service was friendly and polite and the servings were more than generous. We couldnt actually finish our meals because there was so much food! It was also exceptionally tasty. Will definitely be back! Our new local.

Give The Ajrak a Go. Friendly local. Indian & Pakistani dishes. 4 of us in our group tried Meat Samosas & Chicken Tikka for entrees and Lamb Saag, Beef Potato & Beef Korma - all delicious. Saffron rice was light & fluffy. BYO makes for an inexpensive pleasant evening

Great Indian food. Four of us went to the restaurant for a birthday dinner using a Scoopon voucher, we booked a Wednesday night.
We were greeted straight away and taken to our table, it was quiet but the aromas coming from the kitchen were pleasant.
The voucher was for a 3 course meal each, we started with Meat Samosas, Onion Bahjees,Chicken Tikka they also gave us some Poppadoms to eat while we were waiting. For Mains we had Garlic Naan bread, Rice, Lamb Rogan Josh, Beef Vindaloo, Chicken Korma & Prawn Jalfraizi. The food was very tasty & brought to the table quickly, the staff were very friendly we had a great night & would recommend this restaurant for anyone who likes good Indian food.

Amazing food and hospitality!. My husband and I dined on a Scoopon voucher and Ajrak exceeded our expectations. What a hidden little gem! We tried meals that we never had before, full of flavour and cooked to perfection! This family owned restaurant offers great food at great prices with a friendly service. Living close by this will be our new local favourite!
Perthfood
Excellent Indian restaurant with great service!. We had dinner at Arjak and was really impressed with the food and service! The garlic nan was the yummiest we've ever had and unlike some we've tried, was done just right--no burned charcoal bottoms! The curries were absolutely delicious, especially with their extra fluffy Saffron rice. We finished off with their ice cream for dessert and was amazed by the generous serving. Many restaurants give just one block but we got 3 blocks each. The pistachio ice cream was especially good. They also gave free bottled water.

Highly recommended!

Delicious food! would recommend. Food was delish, very very filling and there were vast array of options. Even the naan bread was special. Was quiet when we went, could of used some background music. A little bit of a wait for food but worth it for the taste.

Worth a visit. Went on a scoopon voucher, wasn't dissappointed, left feeling very full. We tried the Butter Chicken, Mango Chicken, Roghan Josh & a beef dish, rice, garlic naans, and deserts which were all delicious. Would recommend this restaurant, we will definitely be going back :)

Went on a Scoopon - they are a great way of trying new places at low cost in case they disappoint. This place did not. Friendly service, great food, large portions. The Pakistani chicken dish was unique and my Favourite. Only slight criticism was it was a bit chilly so my partner had to keep her jacket on. 1 liter bottle of complimentary mineral water and no BYO charge would make this place great value even without our Scoopon. Will return

Julie. Great restaurant. Fantastic service, excellent food, good sized servings. Chicken Korma was yummy. Will definitely go again.

Simple Indian. We purchased a scoopon voucher for 4 at $65. It included 4x entrée, 4x main, 2x rice, garlic naan & 4x desserts. Complimentary water & papadumps were also given. Huge serving for for little cost. Great incentive for a start of a new business, I probably wouldn't have tried it otherwise. The staff were lovely, the cutlery/plates were clean, and the tables were dressed nicely. The food was thumbs up for what it is worth. Give it a go.

Good Food, worth a vist. We bought a scoopon for this retaurant and really enjoyed our meal last night. The food was so tasty and service was excellent.

Tasty food but what about the toilets??!!. Food is tasty, plentiful and good value for money---a bit on the spicy side, so check dishes with staff before ordering. Friendly staff, free bottle of water and pappadums upon arrival.
However, of considerable concern is the state of the toilet which is positively black and toxic-looking! Please rectify before I would consuder eating here again

Not for food snobs but worth the trip to Freo!. Four of us tripped down to South Freo from the northern ‘burbs to try the Arjak since hearing quite a few people talking about it.

The exterior of the place isn’t very appealing at first but hey, it’s what is inside that count’s. I have never been one to worry much about dĂ©cor so long as the place is clean, the lighting right and the food and service great. It is here.

We forget about the menu and asked for the owner to just lay it all out for us, and wow! Everything was plentiful, tasty and filling. This isn’t 5 star but it is certainly value for money and well presented. Every dish is a winner.
We didn't want food that was too hot and spicy, and they delivered on that request, but we were informed that if hot and very hot and spicy is to your liking they will accommodate. I noticed someone made a note that the food here was not spicy or hot enough, but most westerners don't like hot spicy food and these establishments try to cater to western tastes. One only has to ask.

The ice creams are fantastic and a great palate cleanser.

The staff work hard and the service is pretty casual which is nice. A bit of a wait on some items but we had the evening to spare so it was typically sub-continental, nice and un-rushed. Gave us plenty of time to talk, drink and enjoy our conversation.
Meals are better spread over a long time like they are in Asia, Southern Europe and the middle east. You can eat more and not feel bloated!!!!!

BYO without corkage is a winner, so is the complimentary bottled water, especially if there is a few of you dining.
These guys are just starting out and I love to see people make an effort in a new business, and the crew at Arjak really try hard.

We will be back!
Deepa1802
Tasty food. The exterior of the building is not very appealing but it's quite classy on the inside. A quiet relaxing environment, yummy food, nice customer service-the perfect ingredients for a great lunch with my hubby. I bought this deal on scoopon and I don't regret it at all. I recommend the garlic naan with prawn masala! Will surely come back.
The Ajrak
THE AJRAK RESTAURANT would like to apologize to few customers who came to dine in on Sunday 28th Sept 2014.
We are sorry that we could not make you happy. We are not justifying ourselves for late service but we would like to mention that few of our staff members did not show up that day and we served about 111 customers that day with short of staff. However, we managed to cope up after a couple of hours and tried out best to serve our customers efficiently.
@debjohn67: We want to compensate for the inconvenience you had and would like to request you to visit our restaurant again so that we can make up for it.
Regards,
Manager,
The Ajrak Restaurant

Worse Indian Restaurant Ever. I bought a Scoopon deal at The Ajrak for four people which included Entrée, Main Meal, Dessert, 2 Naan, 2 Rice and Pappadams all for $65. We booked for Sunday 28th September at 5.30pm On arriving the exterior building doesn't look the best, but not being hindered by this. The interior not the best neither. However the table and crockery were clean.
We sat down and there was only one other table with customers, the so called waiter provided us with a bottle of water and Pappadams and took our order which was Entrée to be served with main meal only. The service was excellent so far. Our Entrée arrived at around 5.50pm, it was good food. It wasn't to last.
At 6.30pm we still had not received our main meal and the Entrée dishes hadn't been taken away by this time several more tables had been filled. Time now 6.35pm and still waiting for main meal. Husband went upto the front desk and asked how much longer our meal would be as nearly an hour had past, stating that it should have arrived with the Entrée. The so called waiter said It would be about another 10 minutes as now there was a lot of customers. Hence my husband quoted that when we arrived the place was empty. Our Meal arrived at 6.45pm.
Not sure if we even had the right order one Chicken Tikka Masala which had that many vegetables I thought it was a vegetarian meal. Husband supposed to have had Beef Madras but it was Dark Green and tasted like a Korma, he chewed though something that had this liquid inside which he said tasted like disinfectant, our Son had Butter Chicken which tasted very powdery and far too sweet. Rice was ok. We asked for our Naan Bread which never arrived. Didn't stay long enough anyway. Very poor service. Will never go again.

Must Experience this Indian Restaurant!. My family and myself ate at this restaurant last night, we are from an Anglo Indian background so we have eaten at many Indian restaurants around town and I must say the food here was absolutely delicious, the tandoori chicken was a must to order and as is the rest of the menu, the prices are really reasonable and the service is second to none!, I could say thou that the décor for an Indian restaurant wasn't up to scratch, it would be nice if they had more Indian memorabilia so you would get more of the feel of that you were eating in an Indian restaurant but I would say the food makes up for it as well as the polite and professional service, it is a must to go place if your after some spicy, tasty Indian cuisine.
I wish the restaurant the best of luck and for sure we will be going back there again in the near future!
Regards
Leon

Tasty food, great service. My wife and I had a great meal
Location is good, easy to get parking
Decor, atmosphere is fine, was fairly quiet night we went
Service was great, very friendly and attentive
Food was really good and couldn't be faulted - very tasty
We will be back - great to find a very good local restaurant

WOW AMAZING FOOD YOU MUST GET THERE. We dined here this evening, from the minute we walked in the service was exceptional, we loved the waitress she was so helpful and efficient, nothing was a problem, and neither there should be...
the food was outstanding and large portions, we had to bring some home.
We had 2 wonderful entrees boasting flavours I have not experienced before..
The Lamb Madras and Prawn Madras both delicious.
The garlic Nan one of the best I have ever had..
And the Saffron rice very fluffy..
I kept waiting to fault something but there was nothing to fault.
Possibly one of the best Indian meals I have ever had...and I have had a few..
I wish these guys success, they sure do deserve it..
The chef and Maitre'd were very friendly...

GET THERE SOON..they are offering a Scoopon deal at the moment..do it, you won't be disappointed

Very disapointed. Below average food. Service was OK. With so many Indian Restaurants in the Freo area, I was keen to try this new entrant. I bought some takeaways and have to report the food was well below average, quite bland with minimal spice, very ordinary at best. The place is usually empty, so you can't grumble about the service. You would be well advised to go elsewhere if you like "spicey food" and depending on your budget you could spend a little more and go to the Copper Chimney (superb and authentic Indian food) or spend less and go to the Darbar or Mother India for a far better feed. I Love Indian food and hope these guys can lift their game as more competition is never a bad thing, but they must produce authentic taste and not pander to the bland palate.

A New Gem in Fremantle. This is a family owned restaurant that really has the personal touch, the owners are warm friendly people who are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their menu, which is certainly not run of the mill Indian fare. I had the Chicken Nihari consisting of chicken on the bone in the most delicious spicy gravy, accompanied by plain rice and a chilli naan, just superb. My wife is still taking about the Chicken White Korma and I have no doubt we will be back very soon and on a regular basis. If you want an authentic and varied Indian food experience, do yourself a favour a pay a visit to the Ajrak, in my opinion the best Indian food in WA.
Narayani
The best Indian food. The Ajrak has the best Indian food I have ever eaten - and I've lived in India! The menu is varied with many dishes not served elsewhere. The staff are friendly, the service excellent, I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. They haven't gone to town with the decor but that is part of its charm.

Amazing food amazing people who own the restaurant. I so enjoyed my meal thank you so much

Friendly owners, good variety of vegetarian dishes. We tried the mango prawn (best ever!) and vegetable curry (a bit too spicy for my daughter, otherwise quite tasty)... Highly recommended!!

Exceptional Dine in experience I ever had in Australia. We have been to many restaurants before but I have to admit the quality of food in price is unbeatable in a city like Perth, i went there sunday night, Haleem and Nehari are only available at Ajrak in whole Perth, chicken tikka was juicy and properly BBQed, chicken Biryani was pretty good, Pistachio icecream was fantastic, papadum was crispy, all in all it was a five star experience, service was speedy and staff was very friendly
we would love to go back again.
Penny Odiam
Great quality food and service!. Delivery is super fast and they do not charge extra for it. Food is above average, malai kofta serving is a little small for its price, naan lacks yeast or rising agent. Aside from these few minor details, the Chicken is very nice and tender always! Love this place, will continue to order from here.
Vivekr490
Find Elsewhere!. Visited the restaurant after shopping in Hampton Road Fremantle. The staff were pretending nice giving artificial smile. Guy at counter smells bad, but food , service and hygiene was appalling. The food was salty, and re-heated. the sauce pots unclean. The food is not normal Indian food. Just by calling Indian Restaurant or being Indian didn't give Indian flavour. Not really a quality place for family meal.
I will say "Find Elsewhere" there are many Indian Restaurant better than this one.
Paul Murphy
Just WOW. I've never liked Indian food and didn't think id ever change my mind. Then this place rocks up and blows me away with the unreal quality of food. Such authentic currys with fresh beautiful spices, fluffy rice that's just perfect as a side dish and the best naan bread I've ever had. If you haven't tried this place, you're missing out. 10 out of 10
Danielle
Really impressive food. The best curry in Perth according to me. Don't be put off by the humble decor, makes it all the more authentic.
ChibiMatty
Nice stuff, nice people! A great place with quite a few different things on the menu that you won't see anywhere else.On the out-set, it may seem very similar to the standard Indian restaurants you see popping up around the place in Perth, one that caters well to the British expats throughout the suburbs. And the fare here has similar kind of stuff. Your choice of chicken, beef or lamb, available in the usual range of curry-styles: vindaloo, saag, korma, tikka, butter masarla, madras, rogan josh. You know, the usual stuff. There is the choice of chicken or lamb biryani and a range of naan-roti's.
But, don't let that stop you.
The most important thing about this place, was that the food TASTED GOOD. I was especially happy, that unlike some of these Indian restaurants opening lately, ALL THE CURRIES ACTUALLY TASTED DIFFERENT. I'm sorry I'm using capitals, but I have to emphasize that I really DID like the food here.
One of the things I noticed too, was that the rice wasn't bland, the saffron rice actually had a nice flavour and I can only assume the rice was salted a little bit; which is a nice touch that a lazy cook usually wouldn't bother with.
The only small gripe was that the food took a little longer than usual to arrive, but I won't begrudge that in an Indian restaurant; usually this means that the food will taste good, and it did.
From what I could taste, no short cuts in the cooking. No insipid curries here, that you may find in the run-of-the-mill Indian shop, where they all look and taste the same and only have a difference in colour.
Could it be, that because the new owners have experience in Hyderabad, one of the great centres of sub-continental cuisine, that the food has a difference in taste?
You can find a couple of old Pakistani favourites, haleem and nihari on the menu here. It was great to have these dishes. Again, it was something different which sets this place apart from the usual fare. (And the nihari was nice and hot too) There is also a white korma on the menu, alongside the usual korma, plus a mango chicken.
For any Anglo-Indian readers, I also had the Malayi tikka kebab, different to the usual tikka kebab, and it tastes very much like the filling in a chicken khati roll.Anyway, I like this place, and the people who run it; it's still early days yet, so maybe there'll be more diverse things to come in the future!
SashimiForKate
The new signage and paint work outside made us venture inside, we only live a couple of doors down so we thought we should support our local takeaway.
Yummo delish! Paneer tikka~hot style, lamb korma, saffron rice, raita and garlic naan were just the thing for a lazy Saturday evening takeaway. Very yummy and the woman who took our order was friendly, warm and welcoming. I think we'll be back!
