Amazing experience with an array of food that exceeds expectations delighting your taste buds. Each course is a piece of art and does not disappoint. Especially nice how the talented staff explain each mouth watering course. Being of Italian descent, it was so reminiscent of growing with all the food traditions. As a world traveler, I can tell you that Pilu ranks as one of the finest dining experiences. Don’t take my word for it, give yourself a culinary adventure at Pilu!

Beautiful location, warm friendly staff, (especially the Mexican waiter, I'm sorry I can't remember his name). True Sardinian food that you will feel like you have died and gone to heaven when you eat it, truely unbelievable dishes, it's impossible to choose. Always a winner. Definitely worth more than 1 visit. Most likely my favorite restaurant in Sydney.

Wow! What a fabulous place for a long lazy lunch. We went for the 7 course menu sardo and we definitely did not leave unsatisfied. The ingredients where so fresh and the dishes just delicious. Matching wines were a great addition. Highly recommend with a group or as a relaxing afternoon with your loved one.

Fresh, thought out, delicate and absolutely delicious food. I enjoyed the 5 course lunch and every mouthful presented layers and depth of flavour. I was extremely impressed with the quality of ingredients and creativity of the dishes. I would highly recommend Pilu if you love amazing food, outstanding service with a relaxing view of the ocean. My tastebuds were dancing - can’t wait to go back!

For a 2 hat restaurant, we were able to get in at a last minute booking. They had a fixed 3 course meal but understood that we wanted to have a 2 course meal. The food was amazing! We had the squid ink pasta as entree, lamb and risotto for mains and then chocolate mouse and coffee for dessert. The team was good and flexible! Thank you.

So, this place is stretching for a four and we say that with the best of intentions. Going by our own arbitrary chart of how to score yes this place gets a four in terms of “yeah we’d like to come back and eat here again” but if we were to put the dishes together I mean there were some really lows.

We had a wonderful experience at Pili and everything was just perfect.

The location and view are stunning and and it’s a very easy cab ride from Manly Ferry Wharf.

We were really impressed with the vegan and vegetarian options available and we had the five course degustation with matching wines. Whilst the restaurant has a dedicated vegetarian menu as standard the chef had created some really wonderful dishes for our vegan diner.

The service was impeccable and the staff were very hospitable. Sometimes waitstaff can be a bit formulaic when describing degustation food and wine but that certainly wasn’t the case here; our waitress was very passionate and knowledgeable.

We will definitely return to Pilu.

We personally loved food here better than sepia, bridge room, quay, Bentley etc.

Sardinian food with modern twist in a humble way. Loved view, service, food etc 10/10.

We did classic matching wine with 8 course. All wines were fantastic with fantastic explanation from the waiters except for the organic wine. We are not a big fan of organic red wine. I think we had the worst organic wine at the quay. (All the heathy stuff bitter for your mouth indeed!)

Didn’t know ricotta spread for sardinian bread was being charged. That was the only thing we thought they shouldve mentioned it in the menu or something.

I went here for a lunch date and WOW it was absolutely gorgeous. Set in a beautiful bright old home with gorgeous views of Freshwater beach and the sparkling ocean set among blue skies. We got the degustation and lots of wine! When each dish was presented we were told a story of its origin. Amazing staff in an absolutely beautiful location. I rate my day experience here as one of my best. I can't wait to go there again.

When I visited, Pilu were having a 50% off set menu special when you booked through Dimmi. Usually the price of the 5 course menu is $125 and the 8 course is $154 so at 50% off I thought it was a good chance to try this Northern Beaches restaurant. Pilu is located right next to Freshwater Beach so on a sunny day you will have beautiful views of the beach.

I went to Pilu with my family for my sister's engagement lunch. We had excellent weather by the water and the view from the balcony room was spectacular!

Food was delicious. We shared smoked trout with creme fraiche and capers as well as fried zucchini flowers for entree. Both were delectable, especially the acidic aioli which accompanied the zucchini.

For main we had lamb shoulder with lentils and cannellini bean purée, sirloin with eggplant caponata and greens with roast potatoes. Few too many lentils with the lamb which wasn't as pink as I like but the bean purée it came with was zesty and balanced the lamb's saltiness well. Sirloin was slightly tough despite being perfectly pink but the caponata was excellent.

For dessert we each had a profiterole with a raspberry and a small chocolate tart. By this point I was too full to truly appreciate the quality but the profiterole was aerated and spongey as it should be.

Price point is high given the location and quality. However, for a special occasion it is definitely worth a try, especially on a clear sunny day when the view is at its best.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Service was perfect and there was even enough that we could take home some of the leftovers. Looking forward to round 2 tomorrow for lunch!

Wow in one word. We went at lunch time - recommended - as the views of Freshwater Beach are an appropriate backdrop to the perfect food service atmosphere. A must do for a special occasions.

We came to Pilu for a special lunch celebrating my son's birthday. It was a beautiful sunny day and the weather was just perfect. The place was spacious but intimate at the same time and all tables overlook a stunning view of Freshwater Beach. We enjoyed an amazing seven course degustation lunch and every dish was divine. It was lovely flavours from Chef Giovanni Pilu's Sardinian homeland one after another.  He even came out of the kitchen to greet and serve us our first course (I noticed he also did this with other guests) which made us feel really special. The service was impeccable and so was the ambience and the food. Thank you to chef Pilu and his team who helped made this truly a memorable lunch experience for us.

What a stunning location! I try and visit at least once or twice a year just for a nice night out.

The flat bread and ricotta to start with is mouth watering and who doesn't love a good bread basket to start the night off. 

We ordered the 5 course degustation which was well spread out, everything tasted amazing and looked stunning. 

I've never been to much of a wine fan but on my recent visit the sommelier did a fantastic job recommending a nice medium body Pinot Noir. So for next time I know what I'll be getting! 

It's a fantastic fancy night out on the Northern Beaches and is perfect around sunset!

Ravioli of baccala, potato and lemon with fresh tomato sauce and basil oil
(...solid, chunky and chewy ravioli packed full with baccala - tasting unmistakably of the sea but this is the mild and gentle sunny Mediterranean - and not at all the rough and rude Atlantic in the middle of a winter gale!)

Grilled barramundi, sea herbs, baby turnips and smoked ham consomme
(...just when you may be thinking that Pilu is all about your old country nonna's tasty everyday cooking, here comes a dish which showcases some spectacular cheffy wizardry! The grilled barramundi's skin was beautifully browned, crispy and fishysalty...but the protein underneath looked very worryingly overcooked - to the point where I was actually just beginning to get panicky! CALM DOWN, NO WORRIES!! The flesh of the fish was actually like jelly on my fork and then it melted as soon as it got to my mouth. The smoked ham consomme added rich umami flavours to every taste of the fish. The sea herbs were a crunchy and bitter contrast, but then these challenging notes were assuaged by the sweet and soothingly warming turnips which hugged and comforted everyone over...)

Roasted suckling pig and crackling with pork terrine and pistachios, olive paste, guava puree and pickled green tomato
(...one small corner of the meat was starting to dry out but this part still tasted good because of the clever provision of the guava puree condiment. The crackling was crunchy and delicious, the rest of the pork meat was meltingly tender and juicy. This pork meat, together with the pork terrine and pistachio component of the dish, were well-complemented by the olive paste, and the pickled green tomato provided a sharp palate cleanser which cut through any fattiness of the pork crackling...)

Crumbed cookie base, cream cheese, spiced pear, walnuts and ginger
(...comfort food made more interesting by the bursts of flavour from the pears, the crunch from the walnuts and the zing from the ginger...)

Seadas pastry filled with ricotta and sultanas, served with honey and dried orange
(...I was so full now, I felt like a queen bee being force-fed honey and sugar. Thank goodness for the bittersweet, hard, dried slice of orange!)

We were gifted a Red Balloon voucher so what else to use it on but a 5 course lunch at Pilu at Freshwater. This day was a memorable one more or less because we woke up at 3:30am to chase the sunrise!! Matt is loving sunrise photography and we decided to take a morning drive towards Vaucluse and capture sunrise from the lookout nearby Diamond Bay Road. We enjoyed breakfast at Bondi before the last minute decision to drive all the way to Palm Beach.

We came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and it was divine. We started with some fresh oysters and then some flat bread with ricotta mousse. Following that, we ordered 3 courses from the a la carte menu which included octopus, kingfish, lamb and ricotta cheese with filo pastry.

The food did not disappoint. Not only was the food delicious, but the view (although it was cloudy) was beautiful. Service was attentive and everyone was more than helpful with explaining the menu and drinks to us. I can’t fault it. I will be back (probably for the dinner range next time)! 😇

We enjoyed a long lunch at Pilu where we indulged in the degustation menu with 2 wine flights. The view is amazing, the service impeccable and the gorgeous old building makes you feel like you are in an original food institution of the Northern beaches. The food was beautiful the entire way through...the highlight being the Sardinian pastry filled with ricotta and saltanas, served with local honey...what a way to finish lunch! I'm not sure if it tasted or looked better. The wines were devine. Between us we tried both the white and red flight. Highly recommend.

If you're after a good feed and full belly after eating fine food, this is the place to go. Meals were hearty and flavoursome. Have never tried Sardinian food so this was a real treat since I was craving Italian. They have 3 different menus which you can almost pick and choose what you want. We opted for the 3 mains, and a side of oyster. Will definitely try the degustation next time. Service was impeccable - went there for my anniversary and the staff surprised me with a little dessert on the house.

My recommendation is to request the main hall or upstairs near the front windows for a view. And to go during lunch! We booked and were sitted in the side room. Thankfully we had views of the ocean but others did not.

What a charming experience, that really leaves you feeling like you have had  relaxed lunch in Sardinia. The service is exceptional, the dishes are rich with european flavour and the setting is quaint. The desserts need a little more work, but overall this place is a perfect for a special occasion or spontaneous indulgent lunch.

This foodie outing started with (very) late lunch booking at 2:30pm (the other choice was 12:30pm but our group would never have made it there in time). Our group made the trek out to the Northern Suburbs on a bright and sunny day with a nice cool breeze, unlike the previous day, so it wasn't overbearingly hot. Fortunately, I was able to find free street parking within 200m of the restaurant and therefore only had a short stroll down the hill to the restaurant...

Overall, the food was seriously good and satisfying for all, and I would definitely recommend their pasta and meat dishes. However, I personally don't think the desserts were quite as good as the savoury courses.

Pilu is housed in a charming cottage with sweeping views of the beach. We indulged in the 7 course degustation so we could sample the suckling pig. Overall, the food was refined and well-executed. We started with amazing housemade bread studded with roasted fennel and some crackers with tapenade, less impressive as they were quite soft. First up was the chargrilled octopus. It was smoky and tender with a pleasing kick from the spicy nduja. The asparagus and broad beans fregoala in pecorino consomme had equally bold flavours. An acquired taste, the consomme grew on me after a few sips but some of my friends found the cheese overpowering. Next up was the strozzapetri with goats cheese, almonds and capsicum puree. The pasta was a little too al dente for me (yeah, blasphemy!) and overall, paled in comparison to the other dishes. The barrumundi with roasted leeks was beautifully cooked, the flesh flaking easily and complemented by the caramelised vegetables. This was followed by the suckling pig which, as another reviewer mentioned, actually tasted like the dark meat of roast chicken. It wasn't as tender as I'd expected but I liked the clean, rich flavours of the pork. The accompanying tapenade and pickled cabbage counterbalanced the meat, while some pieces of crackling were better than others. Pre-dessert was a refreshing blood orange sorbet, sweet but with enough acidity to cleanse the palate. Lastly, the Sardinian dessert arrived with a candied orange slice perched on top. This was a fried pastry disc filled with ricotta, currants and orange peel. A simple dessert that encapsulated our meal at Pilu: classic dishes, quality ingredients and good cooking. Service from our friendly server was excellent though some other staff weren't quite as warm.

I went there during restaurant week to enjoy the half price food. The feeling after having the 7 courses meal is mixed. Some of the dishes are really enjoyable such as the octopus and the lamp. The deserts are fantastic. however the rest of the meal is below the standard of a good restaurant. The suckling pork and barramundi are so dry, taste like over cooked chicken breast. The pastas are so so as well.

Great Customer Service - HOT waiter - OUT OF THIS WORLD FOOD - from start to finish - SUPER impressed!

We arrived early as Newbies. From the moment the door opened, we felt very welcome :) We were taken to our table straight away like we were the most important people in the world.

Then POW! The waiter appeared - Hubba Hubba - not only was he lovely, he had a knee melting accent and knew the menu inside and out. He made it easy to iron out a difficult choice.

I could tell you what I had and how much I loved it but you need to get there to see for yourself!

I have read the reviews of other people, and it's quite possible that their review was an accurate description of their experience but, after today I think some people need to lower their expectations in being treated like a celebrity (just because they have money) and appreciate a good place when they find one.

All up a GREAT experience - I WILL BE BACK! :D Thank you x

Mookie has a special restaurant that is reserved for the special treatment of good friends and crew alike. It resides in a converted boarding house looking over the epitomy of a northern beach in Sydney and continues to attract locals for its fabulous lunches with a classic coastal view. Naturally on being asked where might be the best place north of the bridge to have a surprise birthday dinner Pilu sprang to mind. We arrive at the appointed time to greet good friends of the Foodie Mookie crew in a Sardinian feast and testament to that king of italian wines – Barolo. Not that Pilu’s wine list is in any way restricted – it has been recognised repeatedly as one of the finest wine lists in Australia.

There's no street number for Pilu at Freshwater. "On the beach" are the only directions you'll get beyond "Moore Road" on their website. It means we have no choice but to walk hopefuly toward the ocean, nodding at the passing surfies heading home in the opposite direction, hair damp with saltwater as they pad past in bare feet. Two hat restaurant, Pilu , is perched on a small hill overlooking the beach. We climb the winding path and go up the stairs that spit us out into an open dining dining drenched with sunlight. It's elegant without feeling stuffy, like hanging out at the holiday home of the rich relatives you wish you had.

Drawing hordes across the bridge, Giovanni Pilu has become a champion for modern Italian/Australian food with an emphasis on Sardinian cuisine, a subsect of Italian food that celebrates cheese, seafood and ‘the fruits of the land’, whilst also having a slight Arabic influence.

This restaurant was a recommendation so we took the fast ferry from Circular Quay to Manly. We walked there from the wharf along the beach, and through the surrounding neighborhood. It is a bit out of the main area but the location and view were fantastic!

I had the special which was a three course menu. The first course was a Pico pasta with a rabbit ragu. This was fantastic with a fresh pasta and perfect ragu, where the rabbit was perfectly balanced. The second course was spicy, grilled spatchcock and the chef recommended Chianti, which balanced the spiciness of the dish. Finally, the Zucotto for dessert. If you don't know what this is, I'll leave the surprise for you, but it was fantastic!

I highly recommend the trip to Manly and to Pilu

We were heading over the bridge to lunch at the two-hatted Pilu at Freshwater right on the beach. As a large island in the Mediterranean Sea, west of the main 'boot' of Italy, the autonomous region of Sardinia is known for seafood, rustic roast meats and the impossibly thin crisp bread carta di musica . Beautiful setting, amazing service, incredible food. Don't have much to say about this two hat restaurant except that my visit was OUTSTANDING. It was a bright sunny day, the setting overlooking the beach was perfect. The service was incredible; the staff really took care of us. The degustation menu was lip-smackingly scrumptious from entree all the way through to desert.

I thought I died and gone to heaven. Need I say more?

Highly recommend for the atmosphere of overlooking the beach. Service was great, food is typical Sardinian. Sardinian pastry with red sauce and slow cooked egg for main was great, honey mousse and white chocolate bundino were nice but an acquired taste with strong flavours. Would come back but would try different dishes.

Like. Went here for lunch a while ago. It's really nice to come here on a weekday when it is quiet. We devoured the oven roasted suckling pig and tagliatelle. Came back for a second time for dinner but the food was not as amazing. Nonetheless, the staff were so wonderful. They let us keep the table for a little while longer when my friends took a wrong turn on the highway and came late.

On Friday night I had the pleasure of dining at Pilu with a good friend. We both had the degustation menu with the matching wines. I have had this before on a number of occasions, but Pilu have raised fine dining to a whole new level. Apart from the pork, which was the hero dish in my eyes, everything else in the menu is new. There wasn't one dish that disappointed. Each new course was a step up from the last dish and became my new favorite dish so far. The wines were fantastic and Tim the sommelier was happy to discuss the wine and his insights into food and wines. The service from all the staff was top notch. Well done Pilu's and congratulations and thank you for a world class dining experience.

Great dining experience. Went here for dinner with my partner a few weeks ago on a Friday night, upon arrival we were impressed by the unique venue and location.

The service throughout the night was impeccable, the staff were friendly and knowledgable about the dishes as well as the wines and we were even given a small serving of the pork (the restaurants specialty) to try as we enquired about it but decided not to order.

We will return and I have already recommended the restaurant to a colleague who dined here for the first time last week and came back with similarly positive feedback.

Perfection at Freshwater. Only my second visit and my first this year, this time for dinner on cold, wet wintery Sydney Saturday. This experience was, amazingly, even better than my first. A warm welcome, hats and coats and umbrellas whisked away and we were soon offered drinks, water, and a little antipasto to share if we had a hunger requiring urgent satisfaction.

A party of five, we all opted for the seven course Sardinian degustation menu; we wanted dishes with bottarga and the slow cooked pork was a must have. The difference between the five course degustation and the seven is the pork and a green apple granita and AU$15. We figured we could handle it and were delighted that we did. All the food was spectacular, interesting dishes, well prepared. The pork was outstanding, succulent, falling apart and melting in the mouth with generous crackling that was crunchy, but not deadly on the teeth.

We did not take the matched wine option, figuring the party was large enough to enjoy risking our own choices, although we were pleased to see the size of each serve of wine given on the menu. The wine list is comprehensive and contains lots of Sardinian wines as well as those from other regions of Italy and from Australia. We did not go beyond the Sardinian section, enjoying a sparkling vermentino to start and then two still vermentinos, the first young and crisp and clean, quite acidic, and the second blended with a little chardonnay and a little ageing in oak. Both were lovely but the second was heaven. Reds were cannonau and once again delicious. So, no mistakes with the wine, for the simple reason we had very good help. The sommelier knows his list and is pleased to explain it to the uninitiated without any highbrow wine nonsense.

All in all an evening of great food and wine in a great venue with great service. What could be better?

Great views. Had less only 2 days Sydney and was recommended this by friend . Very glad we went to this restaurant it was gorgeous and the food was delicious. Sat outside on a beautiful day ! Couldn't have been happier .

Superb. Everything is top quality. The location, the room, the food, the wines and the service. My quail entree was up there with the best dish I have eaten. Mains and dessert were also impressive. Can't wait to go back despite the long drive from home.

Even on a rainy day, the view is beautiful. excellent service, especially the specific wine waiters who taste the wine to see if it is corked before they serve. great handmade fresh ricotta with honey and black truffle drizzled on top! the mains were small food, big plate (which my male companion comented on) however they are filling. kingfish was a hit. nuraghe dessert was delicious. as were the sides they bring you for free eg lemon sorbet with shaved black olives ontop (interesting but delicious combos)
