Review Sakuratei - Geelong

Ricky “SuBw00FeR” Mirovic
This place is fantastic. Food is freshly prepared you can sit and dine-in if you choose too, plenty of space and comfortable. Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back for sure.

Went there for take away dishes. A very busy restaurant. A lot of take away orders. Restaurant is clean and tidy. Had a look into the fridge, a good variety choices of drinks and wines. Order came in time. Went home surprised found out that they gave us a free sushi. The rolls are decent sizes and full of fillings. Sushi rice is good flavoured. The only thing is sashimi tuna is not fresh. But everything else is good.

First time I had Japanese Cuisine, a nice clean venue, went there in the lunch hour. A very busy and thriving business. I was seated down with minimal waiting, table service was excellent and meals were efficiently served. I could not complain about the meals and on paying the cashier explained that I was entitled to a 25% rebate through the Victorian Dining Program, which I have claimed.

This place definitely has the best sushi in Gtown, not only is it fresh but the serving size is very decent. The mains menu is also delicious. Grouse spot a quick casual dinner.

Really nice japanese that we stumbled across while in the Geelong area. Probably ordered way more than we needed but was great being able to take the rest home! Staff were really nice and could tell it was a popular place due to the amount of traffic coming in and out. Highly recommend!

Have been served twice the wrong meal, once to home and today was inside. Knew we had the wrong food and still charged us after telling them about the mistake. Have lost ongoing customers 1 to 5 times monthly of 5 people. Sadly very unimpressed with the attitude stating we were wrong when ir was the assumed young family member on school holidays making a mistake. 1st bad review I've done in years, haven't been this angry with poor attitude for q long time.

Very uncomfortable experience. We found bugs in the vegetables. Replaced meal arrived with bugs as well. Manager kept insisting I show her my phone to make sure I deleted the photos and would not leave us alone until we “deleted” photos. Agedashi tofu had burned bits of food as the oil in the wok wasn’t changed. Manager apologised as the kitchen was very busy, however we would have preferred waiting longer over receiving rushed food.

I went in expecting to have a nice Japanese food. The sushi actually tasted great, it was big and tasty. However, the Japanese pancake and Yakisoba that I ordered were a total fail. They didn't look and taste like what they should be.The staff was really friendly and attentive. I might go back..only for a sushi though.

I think the photos speak for themselves. Fresh and delicious food. It was a great meal. Highly recommended!!

They should be more hygienic with everything tables, chairs and kitchen (including staff uniform, gloves etc).
Was the second time that my husband and I went to the restaurant because the first time I didn’t have a good experience with food but I thought they’re 4 start maybe today is a bad day but nop at all. The food isn’t fresh that should be and the place needs a good cleaner.

Don't want to be rude but as soon as we pulled up and entered, we wanted to turn back. For a 4.1 rated restaurant the decor was really outdated and the chairs and tables were old. One of the dishes we ordered was a mix sashimi which only the salmon seemed somewhat fresh and edible. After eating for 20 minutes, our stomachs began to feel weird and we felt nauseous. After leaving we still felt nauseous the entire night. We tried a variety of foods from the sushi rolls, to the Udon noodles and side dishes like cheese and corn spring rolls and crab and cream croquettes. These 2 side dishes especially tasted really funky and odd, we weren't sure if the cheese they added simply didn't go with the corn or if it was something else. Very unusual. The only thing that I somewhat enjoyed was the agedashi tofu but even with that the broth was very bland.

A no frills restaurant with delish food. We had the bento boxes - very generous in size, the sushi rice and gyozas. Just tast good food. 3 ppl we paid $50 altogether. Such good value

The servings at this restaurant were large and prices very cheap. We got 5 dishes and a drink for 3 people for only $60.20. We are very pleased with their friendly service. Wode selection of Japanese alcohol and beverages including many varieties of Sake, ramune soda and others. Miso soup and water was also complimentary. Worth every cent.

Kind staff, delicious food and great pricing!

This restaurant is simple and humble with its lay out but the service is quick and efficient. The sashimi is always fresh and the serving very generous. Great place to get those Sushi and sashimi cravings fulfilled!

Hi! We have been here a handful of times now mostly out of lunch peak time, so after 2pm and for dinner twice. Please keep in mind this is no five star restaurant but the settings are appropriate, the food is fresh due to a big turn over, service is great and fast. Going at these times we get a seat and the staff are prompt to get water for the table. We have tried a range of starters, bento boxes side dishes and sushi or hand rolls and have no complaints, as I said the high turnover is the key to freshness and that is evident here. I am a big eater and I find the servings slightly larger than most other Japanese places I have tried for the price. If you want that quick Japanese fix, no frills but fresh I am happy to recommend and we will be back without question.

Don't forget to click "FOLLOW" if you like my honest and how I saw it review.

I came here with my friend after work and it had great reviews on google review (4.5/5 stars). I don't think I will ever come back again. I ordered futomaki and okonomiyaki while my friend ordered katsudon ramen. The katsudon ramen looked nothing like the photo and the taste was mediocre. The futomaki had ingredients missing from it. It was missing bean, mushroom and Japanese pickles; 3 out of the 6 ingredients listed on the menu. I was greatly disappointed. It had a whole lot of carrots inside which dampened the taste. One positive thing about the futomaki was the rice. The sushi rice was spot on. The okonomiyaki was more like an egg pancake. It smelt strongly of fried eggs and just looked unappetizing. I did not like the way they served the okonomiyaki sauce on a side plate. It was very difficult to get a good ratio of the mayonnaise and the soy sauce as when I tried to pick up the okonomiyaki it fell apart.
Positive: - The sushi rice was really good- Waiter was nice- At least we got a seat
Negative: - Don't take a photo of the food if you are not going to prepare the dish just like the one in the photo!!!
- Missing half of the ingredients in the futomaki
- Too much shredded carrots in the futomaki

Conclusion:
It's obvious that the people who prepared the dishes did not know much about real authentic Japanese food. Try looking up a photo on the internet of how a real okonomiyaki is prepared and how it's suppose to be plated. I don't think I will be back at this restaurant and I now know not to trust google reviews.

i had read the reviews for this place and being a foody from Melbourne i wanted to try this so called hidden gem. in all honestly it can stay hidden. i ordered the tempura bento and my wife the chicken and beef bento.
my bento was huge (double of everything) but tempura was thicker than beer batter and had not been drained at all. after 2 mins all items in my bento were swimming in 5mm of oil at bottom of each section in bento. yuk. my wife's chicken had no flavour or seasoning and the beef curry had been so badly watered down and ruined a nice tasting curry. service average as took 5 mins for the table to be cleaned and place is poorly presented. i can't believe somebody on here compared this place to Melbourne.
try Samurai on Glenferrie rd or uzu japanese in Caulfield.
never again

Love the delicious Sushi that is freshly made. Best place for Japanese Bento box, Ramen and sake menu. My partner was disappointed that the fish cake is missing in the Ramen but the broth is full of flavor. Their dishes are an absolute value for money.

Very good food and friendly people. The food served is delicious! Best Japanese place in town. I highly recommend the sushi which is freshly made.
Alex
Best japanese in geelong, hands down. Very consistent in quality and service. The bento boxes are really good value, but the handrolls are always good for quick takeaway
Info
friendly staff, good service and plenty of choice. Seafood pancake and tofu steak are must try. Very busy place. Good but still got room to improve.

Food is AMAZING! Friendly staff. Ambiance is humble and inconspicuous which betray the lovely food they offer but if you don't care about the way the place looks, it shouldn't be a big deal. It's just the best Asian food we've had in Geelong. Rice rolls (cooked tuna "sushi") and their vegetarian bento box (which is not even on the menu) are our favorites. If we could rate them 10 stars, we would!

Recently went here after craving a Bento Box. My craving was not satisfied... Unfortunately the Sukiyaki Beef Bento box was very dull and tasteless. The small amount of beef on offer did not have the Sukiyaki flavour I was craving and I had to add soy sauce to give some sort of flavour. The single spring roll was cold and the salad (2 X lettuce leaves) was floppy. I'm not sure why they also include a side of pork with this bento, perhaps some fresh sushi or a seaweed salad would have been more suitable, and is common in other Bento's. Won't be coming back as other dishes served in tables around me looked very similar.

What a treasure. Simple decor and brisk fuss free service. The food spoke for itself. Great flavours, ample sized meals and a wide menu. Enjoyed the chicken teriyaki and mixed sushi & sashimi platter. We will definitely be back.
Lauren
Excellent Japanese.
Really tasty fresh sashimi, beef tender full of flavor. Eel and rice delicious too.
Edamame, seaweed salad, Gyoza, great too.
Excellent service, very accommodating and fast service of food. Looking forward to returning.

Best Japanese in Geelong and better than many I've been to in Melbourne. You would never guessed if from the decor or exterior. So happy to have found a good local. Hidden gem ;)

All the points go to the friendly staff. Food is less than average. We ordered a sushi and sashimi platter which took more than half an hour to arrive. The fish slices were too thin and the tuna had already fallen apart, a sign to show it wasn't fresh enough. The sushi rice was too mushy, not enough( or wrong kind) sushi vinegar to season the rice. Cooked meals might taste better and apart from us all the other people there were having cooked meals.
I think the people was definitely ran by non-Japanese who don't have a thorough understand for Japanese food.
Still a good place to have a quick bite after shopping in Coles but not if one wants to have proper Japanese food.

Such a gem of a restaurant. This restaurant is fantastic value! Good quality Japanese food, really good price. The hand rolls are great, and the rice bowls are fantastic. Try the katsudon or one of the bento boxes

Yum yum!. A frequent visitor of Sakuratei and i'm never disappointed! Cheap, delicious food!! Highly recommend the japanese fried rice!! Flora (the owner) is absolutely lovely and makes me feel welcome every time.

Greatly Disappointed!. As we entered the restaurant at nearly 3pm on a Monday, it was quiet and we were quickly seated and served.
The menu looked sufficient, though not extensive and the cost was enticing.

We ordered Spicy Salmon Rolls, Tori Galic Yaki Rice, Salmon & Avocado Roll and Prawn & Avocado Roll to eat-in.
And regrettably ordered 2x Tori Don and 1x Gyu Don for take-away.
Once again, service was very quick and the food came faster than expected and seemed well presented.

However, it was impossible to pick up any of the Spicy Salmon Roll pieces as they all completely fell apart and were badly constructed.
I was happy that the Tori Galic portion seemed large and the first tasting of the sauce gave a good impression - though it strangely tasted like carbonara sauce for pasta (which I do love, though it'd be more like fusion at a Japanese place). But the chicken was not tender, but dry and after mid way through the dish it I really lost my appetite for it. A positive though is that with the rice, they do provide complementary miso soup which was okay.
I requested for the other hand rolls to be cut up and they were easy to pick and eat without falling apart. The portion of salmon in the roll was generous, BUT it was definitely not fresh! The prawn roll was mediocre.

The Take-Away Order:
There is little to say about this, than to advise that there was nothing appetising about take-away from here. I guess it doesn't help that it wasn't for immediate consumption.

SUMMARY:
[The Good]
* Plenty of seats (@ 3pm)
* Quick service
* Good prices
* Free miso soup with rice meals
[The Bad]
* Not fresh
* Poor standard of preparation (i.e. pieces fell apart)
* Taste = 3.5/10
* Not designed for take-away or to be re-heated (containers were also not microwaveable)

CONCLUSION: Will NOT be visiting this place again.

Best Japanese in Geelong!. We come here at least once a week. Always delicious food and great customer service!

Terrible tempura, seafood ramen is not nice with rubber fish, scallops not cleaned, raw carrot. I followed the votes on this website and got bad experience. Sansai restaurant in Pakington street is best tempura and noodles in Geelong
Sk
Delicious. We were driving from Melbourne to Lorne but craved some Japanese for lunch. This place didn't disappoint with its wide menu, fresh sushi, noodle broth and rice dishes (all comes with miso soup). Affordable, friendly and casual vibe. Highly recommend!

Quick and easy. Large menu to choose from and they bring the meals out quickly. The staff are friendly, too.
The bento-boxes are very delicious and all their meals are good value for money.
Gordon Ramsay
Best Japanese restaurant in Geelong. I recommend this place, Staff are friendly and welcoming, the food tastes amazing along with great prices.

Exceptional. Excellent Japanese food at very reasonable prices and their party platters are delicious.

Great Sushi handrolls. One of the best Sushi hand-roll places in Geelong. Always fresh and a decent size. Great customer service.

This is very average japanese food with very slow service and poor technique. Ignore the hype, if you want genuine japanese food, go elsewhere. Agadashi tofu was overfried in the wrong sauce, a vege curry was no more than a plate of zuchini with a splash of tasteless curry sauce and the yosenabe large but with cold scallops dropped in. Out of five- maybe 2. Wont be back

I live very nearby and had never been here although it often seems busy. Decided to head in for lunch with a friend yesterday & it was an absolute find! The food was delicious, service was very good & all came in under $30 for a mammoth feed! Will happily be returning for my fix of Japanese from now on!

Best Japanese in Geelong. By a mile!

Incredle food and good service, definite must try.

Nice. Simple little Japanese take away place. The people are friendly and the food is what one would expect from a restaurant / take away style shop. Would go again.

Ate here sometime in 2011 and don't remember much about what we ate except that it was bad enough for us not to return since.

Sakura Tei Sakura yeah!!!!. Ive been a consistant customer since they opened, first class sashimi, bento meals and hot dishes, a very accessible menu aswel, you dont need an interpreter to find out what you are ordering, Two big thumbs up, !!!
The BEST tonkatsu bento i have EVER had.
And at about 12 for a bento, and sashimi dishes on the money, Nori rolls are 2.20, unstoppable!!
El Dartos
My favourite place to eat out. Cheap, friendly efficient staff and generous servings.
Mariska
Eat there once a week . Friendly staff and awesome food
Queen Bee
Best Japanese restaurant in Geelong by far!!! Food is fresh and very tasty - had the teriyaki eye fillet and it was amazing!!! Prices are reasonable and service is attentive. Hubby and I were very full after our dinner (inc beers) and it only cost around $60. Def return again.
Julia
The people here do not speak English, our waiter did not understand what we were trying to order and couldn't answer basic questions such as, is one serving enough for one person. Definately wont be back. The japanese on ryrie st is much better and cheaper too.
