Review Mojo Mama - Geelong

Mexican Food with Modern Touch Tried this place since I was craving for Mexican food. The restaurant wasn’t busy when we walked in. The staff was friendly and helped us deciding since we weren’t too sure what to order. The food came out hot and well presented. It did taste pretty good. They have nice beer collection to choose from. Overall it was a nice experience.

Average. The chicken wings are bland so there's really no need for the sour cream drizzle. It washes them out. There's no real speciality here or meal that has a feeling of authenticity. Some of the foods aren't even inherently Mexican. The main and dessert I'd come especially to try were both unavailable. The brisket is rather nice though. Very well cooked, though not exactly mexican. Interior is sparcely and randomly decorated as if the owners didn't have a clear vision on their theme. Feels very hit and miss.

Wow really tasty! First we thought it's quite pricey but the plates are a lot bigger then the usual Mexican sharing plate-size... Really delicious with a lot of flavours and filling

Best Mexican food in Geelong.. by far! Other restaurants aren't even close!

The mains were large and tasty, as were the tacos.

Fantastic restaurant with a big menu that caters for all (Mexican) tastes. You can go big, small or share. Very reasonably priced. Everything tastes delicious. A really good drinks menu with a lot of varieties I hadn't come across before. Perfect for bigger groups as it has long tables and also caters for kids, which is a bonus, including colouring in and kids menu. Staff are friendly and accommodating. We have come here a few times now and would happily recommend to anyone coming to Geelong. It is a spot you don't want to miss.

This was a little gem of a find. It is relaxed dining with great specials. The food is tasty and not drowned in cheese as some mexican restaurants can be. I went on a Wednesday enchilada night $20 for a beer and a lovely meal, you can't go wrong but do get a starter to shair. I will be back to try more of the menu

The food here is reasonable but not remarkable. Our nachos were lovely, all choices for kids meals were very ordinary, the corn and zucchini fritters were a highlight and the tacos were really nice. The most disappointing thing was that one of our children received her meal half an hour after everyone else's meals were served; when we raised this, she was served the wrong meal before another wait, and then finally the correct order. In other restaurants, we would have not been charged for this meal, but this wasn't the case. We received polite service, however we were ignored for ten minutes (and couldn't get anyone's attention) after saying that we needed a few more minutes to decide what to order. Our plates were also not collected for a long time after we had finished. If you're after fresh Mexican food and don't mind lax service, this is a good spot.

We’ve been on the hunt for some good Mexican food and Mojo mama provided just that.

We ordered the chicken, crispy pork and pulled beef taco. Each taco was filled generously but the tortilla wraps broke from being soaked in meat juice which made it hard to consume and got messy. The beef quesadilla was enjoyable, meat wasn’t dry, simple filling with a nice crispy tortilla.

One of the better Mexican restaurants we’ve been to, nothing spectacular, just simple flavours that work and would return to try their other dishes.

Great Wednesday night work related meal! Nice, basic Mexican food. We shared nachos, which were fairly pedestrian but the soft tacos were lovely. Three each. We had prawn, pork and squid, pumpkin and black bean versions. Very nice! Desserts were exceptional. My beloved had panacotta with fairy floss and toffee, I had the peanut butter caramel milkshake! Loved the food.
Really great place for some food!

The service by the waitresses was warm and friendly.

My wife and I had the banquet and it was a very filling meal!

Great Tacos. The beef brisket was delicious.

Pretty good waiting times for food- although we did come early before the main dinner rush.

Would definitely recommend to friends and return myself.

Delicious, cheap food and relatively vegetarian/vegan friendly- there are two options in soft tacos/a quesadilla/one main course/range of entrees and desserts available. Highly recommend the black bean soft tacos. Lovely service but beware and clarify twice if you don't want cheese/want something vegan.

The enchilada was ok, looked fancy but the taste was a bit bland. The pulled pork burger tasted good, but impossible to eat without getting it everywhere. The cocktails didn't seem to have any alcohol, just juice. We asked the waitress to change the margarita, she took it and brought it back without any change. If you are going there do not order any cocktails. What you will get is expensive salty water with mashed ice. The waitress undercharged us (she gave us someone else's bill) and when we did the right thing and alerted her to the mistake, she didn't bother to apologise or thank us.

Love that tacos. The prawn and chorizo and sweet potato fries are easily my favourite. I have eaten at this restaurant numerous times and it never disappoints.

Not an extended menu but have to say the best Mexican in geelong and I have eaten at all of them. Serves are big and prices are reasonable. Three taco choice was amazing, and everything was home made. Definitely my fav Mexican place now. Service was great too.

Awesome tacos!. Frickin amazing tacos and great selection of mexican beers, definitely hit this place up.. Maybe a tad pricey tho, if they brought it down to an even $5 a taco I'd be happy with that.

Great every day restaurant with quality food and good staff

Walked into this restaurant last nite xcited to try, waitress looked & saw us walk in & she turned & walked the other way & so did we. Will not attempt again, we thought if this is how service starts is will not be good

Mexican with a difference.. I LOVE my Mexican cuisine. If you are a fan too, then make sure you get down to Mojo Mama. Don't expect stodgy cheesy dishes though. Mojo Mama offers up tasty food that has a delightful freshness and spicy hit.

It really was different to a lot of the Mexican cuisine i have had previously. It was a nice change. Don't get me wrong, i do love my cheesy Mexican, but the Mexican i had at Mojo Mama's was incredibly tasty. Fresh clean flavors and nice hints of spice were packed into every offering. The servings although generous, are probably not as large as some of the Mexican dishes offered elsewhere. But having said that i was satisfied and did not feel hungry afterwards.

Mojo Mama is a great option for Lunch or Dinner. Great modern atmosphere, and Service was excellent. The menu perhaps was a little limited, but I was happy with the selections offered. I enjoyed my meal and look forward to eating there again soon. Give Mojo Mama a try, I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

It's great Geelong has a Mexican street food restaurant! Hopefully this place can improve so people will keep going back for years to come. I love the tacos, however most of the other food I've tried is very average or below. Food seems to be a bit hit or miss too. The place lacks atmosphere, largely due to the decor; there's just been no effort to make it great. Most of the staff lack enthusiasm too. Hopefully it improves!!

This place rocks. Food is amazing, staff are getting it together. Fresh tasty mexican feats.

Great menu ideas, good execution, but service and timeliness needs sharpening. It's fantastic that Geelong finally has a restaurant that serves fresh and well-cooked Mexican food. Having visited several times now, we've tried most of the menu items and have enjoyed the majority of their offerings, however it's clear that Mojo Mama are feeling the pressure of bigger dinner services.
Firstly the food - the prawn and chorizo taco, the beef taco and the pork taco are the three to try. Soft breads filled with tender meat and crunchy slaws or salads and dressings - you can fault them on a warm night. The chicken taco is dry and cold, and the squid needed more pieces within it.
The brisket main is well seasoned, melt-in-your-mouth and falls apart with a touch of the fork. Served in a pool of rich, spicy Mexican-jus(?), crispy chat potatoes, fresh salsa and a wad of chipotle butter that melts atop the beef. This main is well worth the $24! The pork belly is similar in texture, one visit had a crispy crackling but the next visit was soggy however the frijoles and salsa were perfectly matched with it. Their sweet potato fries with jalepeno mayo are great, nachos even better, and street corn is a must! But the plain chips and salsa are underwhelming.
The quesadillas are good but not that filling - order a side or entree+dessert... Oh and their desserts are spot on! Loved the special ice creams they serve but their crepes are delicious too.

Tip: choose a quieter night to dine here
To the staff/management: ensure that you're well staffed to ensure positive service experiences

Bad Service, Cold Tacos. Very disappointing with a nearly hour wait for the tacos, which came out cold.

Wow! Finally some decent Mexican food in Geelong!. I can't believe there are bad reviews about the food here (disgruntled fans of other Mexican eateries perhaps?) but the food here blew my socks off! *Finally* the kind of Mexican food I've been desperate for in Geelong for so long.
I will admit that the service isn't as good as the food, but wow.... The food! (The service could be improved by wait staff that were just a little more on the ball).

We had the banquet and for the price, it was amazing. The starter of corn chips/salsa was basic but delicious, the tacos were perfect (I could have eaten a dozen of those bad boys...) and the main - I chose the braised brisket (with crunchy yet soft-in-the-middle potatoes) - perfection. After the corn ice cream, we were stuffed to the gills but my dining partner and I cannot recommend it enough. Fresh, vibrant and delicious.

Best sweet potato fries!

So close yet so far. Mojo mama is so close to being amazing, I think they just have a few teething issues they still have to work out as they are still so new!!
Food was yummy ( street corn is a must try) although when busy can be very slow.
Wait staff very helpful with a some what confusing menu for someone who doesn't understand most of the items!
The biggest downfall for me was we were STILL waiting for our drinks after we had almost finished our corn chips and they were ordered as soon as we sat down.
Short staffed maybe that night?? they all looked like they were running around frantically!!
So close guys, I think it can only get better as time goes on!!

Great food great value. Had a great meal at mojo mama. We had the sweet potato chips and corn cobs to start which were absolutely delicious! For main we had a variety of the soft tacos. The fillings were really flavorsome and generous. The whole menu was really affordable, much less than you would pay at any other restaurant I can think of in Geelong. I found the staff to be pleasant and helpful unlike other reviews.

Amazing, fresh, vibrant flavoures. Chicken and pork tacos are Definetly my favorites. Great menu nearly everything is gluten free, very affordable and staff where lovely, fast and attentive. Can't wait to sit outside over summer enjoy a few coronas and some delicious Mexican. Well done guys!!

Can't stop thinking about those tacos!. My Friends and I went to Mojo Mama on the weekend and were delighted to find a great fresh menu. I had three tacos, the best was the pork but they were all delicious! My friend who is gluten intolerant was so happy to find just about everything on the menu was gluten free. All in all a great night with delicious food!

Not worth the risk, go elsewhere. Very disappointing. I usually give a restaurant the benefit of the doubt but given the number of things that went wrong and the previous reviews, I think it's safe to say avoid at all costs. Such a shame as Geelong could do with a top Mexican place.

What was good: Beef taco

What was not good: poor table service, bland food, overpriced, wrong orders, food was served luke warm and overall uninspiring atmosphere.

Agree with a previous review, could make better Mexican at home with my friend Old El Paso. Such a shame. Won't be going back.

Save yourself the trouble. If you enjoy waiting an hour and a half, think sugar syrup drinks are ok and get a thrill out of receiving the wrong order this is the place for you! Also since when does Mexican food come garnished with flat-leaf parsley? (waitress said it was a coriander parsley mix but she was telling fibs). Sorry Geelong you'll have to keep waiting for good Mexican.

Wost Mexican Ever!. Very disappointing experience. We booked a table for 7:30 and arrived to find it hadn't been cleared. When we sat down we were ignored for 20minutes without menus. We found our own menus shortly thereafter laughing about the bad table service. Another 10mins pass and a waitress finally came to take our drinks order. PS don't get the "frescha water" drink thing...terribly sugary, pretty much just strong cordial. By 9pm we were still waiting for our mains. When they came out, the order was wrong, they were cold but we were so hungry ate them anyways. The food was terrible and an interesting choice of parsley (not coriander as advertised not he menu) was incorporated into each dish. When I pointed out the the waitress that there was no coriander in the meals and it was instead parsley, she insisted that it was normal and that a mix of the two herbs was used in all their dishes. Need-less-to-say parsley does not compliment Mexican food...AT ALL! Terrible service, terrible meal, terrible ambiance and overpriced food. Definitely give this one a miss!

Bad vibes. It is very interesting to note that the same person owns this restaurant and also Black Bull. ThIs restaurant is a very poor cousin to the other and does not have any atmosphere. Menu choices are very limited and staff refuse to alter any menu item even slightly. Wil not be going back, my home cooked Mexican is 100% better than this.

Love it! The food is fresh and delish! The combinations in the tacos are an explosion in your mouth! Yum! I've always been too full to try the popcorn icecream...one day I will because it looks awesome! My advise to people who want hard shell tacos and nachos...stay home and make them yourself! These flavours are 1000 times better than that deep fried crap smothered in cheese
Tay
So So. Firstly the place does not resemble a mexican restaurant at all neither does the menu in my opinion , they don't have nachos and when we asked if they could melt cheese on the corn chips in the nibbles section the waitress looked confused and said no sorry :/ also no hard shelled tacos which I find strange .... weird music playing the whole time and id give my meal a 3/10
would not come back

Bday dinner.....a big disappointment.. Was so disappointed, ordered banquet, nibbles- corn chips for 4 people with salsa, had one taste each of salsa, and it was gone, such a small dish of salsa for 4 people.
Main meal- Pork belly, it was so stringy I could not chew it, good crunch on the crackle.
The large table behind us left, and waitress cleaned table, with a couple of large sweeps of the cloth sweeps all the left over food onto the floor. Normal way I thought would be to sweep into cloth and dispose of it. Now I understood why the floors looked so filthy. Next people at this table get to grind more food into the floor. No atmosphere at all, really boring looking place.
Over all a totally boring experience for my bday.

Loved the food! Especially the pork taco. Service was ok and didn't have to wait long. Definitely will be back.

Such a great opportunity to have an authentic Mexican street food restaurant in Geelong- such a disappointment. Average food, awful atmosphere. So disappointing when such greasy things are going in G-town.
Melissa
Our table ordered soft tacos, which took well over half an hour to come out. When they did, they were cold but we were so hungry we ate them anyways.

Staff were slow to take our order and the post mix in the drinks was bad which made the soft drink flat.

We were planning on having desert there too but after the dismal dinner we went to Black Bull next door for desert who didn't disappoint.
Beth
Great food- strange interior. First impressions of Mojo Mama were a bit odd- the restaurant interior doesn't reflect Mexican street food at all. It felt a bit like a pub bistro.
The food was great though. reasonably large servings for the prices and it was fast despite the restaurant being full.
The beef brisket was spot on with a really rich sauce. The tacos were also really tasty but unfortunately the tortillas they use go super soggy and fall apart.
Sweet potato fries were awesome as well.
Friendly service too.
For all the food we tried we were really happy with the bill. Definitely an affordable night out.

We ordered the 5 different flavours of tacos and they were all delicious. My favourite was the prawn n chorizo... Dessert was also nice too.

Good tacos and good service but some of the rest of the menu needs work
