Review The Black Toro - Glen Waverley

Joemar Mante
Very good selection of South American cuisines. The "feed me" option is our best recommendation. Pulled pork tacos was also a favourite

Always a great experience. I used to go to the one in Chapel st that unfortunately closed down. I always ask the Feed Me Banquet which is plenty of food and an amazing desert platter. The service was excellent too. Absolutely recommend it.

On a nice summer day , the ambience is good. Waiter was very helpful and friendly. Food was great — definitely try out the short rib tacos and fish tacos :))

This place is phenomenal. Went for anniversary dinner. Food was mouth watering. Service was quick and friendly . Would give 9.5. The only recommendation I would have is to upgrade the sponge cake on the dessert board as it was a bit boring compared to the rest of the menu. All in all can’t wait to eat here again.
Mark N
Service staff was outstanding, you really should try the maracuya and the braised short rib, simplistic but such amazing flavour not to mention the ribs were very tender.
Michael Boyer
Went here for dinner and sat outside under the marquee. It was a bit cold despite the heaters but much easier to hear each other than inside. Food was delicious! We opted to order our own instead of the banquet. A mixture of starters, tacos and then the lamb and pork larger dishes. Finished off with the dessert tasting board.

I was skeptical of this place as I am not a fan of tapas. Boy was I wrong - the food here is absolutely delicious and the serving sizes are not stingy. The ambience is fantastic too. My only recommendation is for the wait staff to relax a little when asking diners if they are ready to order, but I suspect this is only because they want their patrons to taste the fantastic meals that are on offer!
James Gorman
Food was nice - the feed-me option is heavy on the entrees, which I really enjoy. We booked ahead and were seated outside, and while this is mentioned as a possibility on the website, it really ought to be disclosed once it’s been confirmed because in the middle of winter it makes a difference (even with an outdoor heater). Unfortunately our experience was that table service outside was a bit sparse, and a glass of wine that I ordered sadly never arrived. Good tacos.

another western restaurant on the kingsway strip, the black toro specialises in meat!! the prices are a little steep but you get great, friendly service and high quality food every time. would recommend coming here for a special occasion or date.

We will never eat here again. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. Management should be ashamed of themselves for having zero courtesy for patrons who book weeks in advance, provide credit card details to secure the booking - only to be told they are seated outside in the middle of winter. What an absolute joke. The whole place should be shut down. Social distancing regulations were not adhered too. No additional hygiene measures. Staff willing to “bend the rules” as long as paying patrons are flexible in their overbooked restaurant and out within the hour. What a disappointment. Never again.

No cash payment is allowed during the Wuhan Virus situation, which is understandable. However, they charge you surcharge on cards, which is unacceptable. There are no means of payment without a surcharge, which is so wrong. And they don’t tell you the percentage of the surcharge after you tap your card. Before you tap the card, it only shows the amount without the surcharge, only after you tap the card, it tells you how much is the surcharge. They should put a clear sign in-store and state how much the surcharge is. Dishonest business conduct.

Started the night with a red wine sangria. It definitely hit the spot. Ordered the lamb barbocoa in banana leaf which came with pickles, salsa and tortilla. The lamb was exquisitely soft and fell apart.

The food was very average and below average customer service . We sent the tacos back as they didn’t taste fresh. There was no apology from the waitstaff and instead we were told that they taste so because they are made on sight , which didn’t make any sense . The waitstaff didn’t bother striking the tacos off the list when it came to billing . Please go to any Mexican fast food restaurant instead , they serve
better food and service .
Julia Russo
Had really good service for a majority of the night and then we were forgotten. Sat with empty dishes in front of us for over half an hour. Never got offered a dessert menu which was a shame. Couldn’t even make eye contact with anyone to get the bill. We were only acknowledged when we went up to pay.

Little place but not squishy, good space and a beautiful bar . Delicate and good tasty Mexican food. Have to try their mocktail with passion fruit !!! And the salmon tartare with fried nori is also special and fantastic !!! The tempera fish taco is so yummy !!!They also have outside sitting with heater on

Went in for lunch on a Saturday. Restaurant was pretty empty. Ordered the Guacamole, snapper ceviche, jalapeño cheese croquette, cauliflower, paprika chips and fish tacos. Guacamole was loaded with a tomato salsa which wasn’t great. The melon and cucumber in ceviche wasn’t fresh. Croquettes weren’t too bad but it is hard to dislike something made of cheese and potatoes. Fish tacos were probably the best. Didn’t get a chance to try the mains as we were already pretty full. Overall a pretty mediocre experience.
PB
Very disappointed! Food although tasty - the servings are tiny ! These guys are marking up the food at a ridiculous percentage- $16 for 4 cauliflower florets. Unbelievable!! Too expensive to return and no reaction from the floor manager when highlighted - makes you feel they already know this.?

Black Toro was one of the earlier Latin American restaurants to hit Melbourne’s contemporary dining scene. It opened back in 2012 in Glen Waverley and has just launched a second inner-city venue on the Windsor end of Chapel Street. Black Toro Windsor (formerly Shukah) is a blessing for those who appreciate well-executed Latin street food but don’t want to travel quite as far East to get it. The menu is similar if not slightly more extensive than Glen Waverley, showcasing snacks, tacos, tostadas and a selection of mostly meaty mains.

I was really excited to try out this place for my birthday. However, I was greatly disappointed by the availability of dishes for vegetarians. I ordered the corn fideos which was the ONLY vegetarian "family sized" option. For $28, I got a less noodles than you would get in a two-minute noodle box. There was some sauce mixed in but no veggies on the side.

Came here for hubby birthday dinner. The food was delicious and so fresh.
The taco was superb and dessert is yummy.
Friendly staff and good service too.

final stage of the 'feed me' option 🍦 great dessert variety. Pretty disappointed in the overall 'feed me' option though. Only get one small main for two people which isn't ideal at all 🙁 probably won't order it again but on the bright side the dessert place was good 🍦 5/10 for value for money.

After reading all the positive reviews about The Black Toro, I was pretty excited to try it!
We started with the Jalapeño & Cheese Croquettes, White Fish Ceviche and the Prawn Quesadilla! (AMAZING!)
Also pictured were the Soft Shell Tacos and Wagyu Beef Sliders.
This restaurant did not disappoint at all! Service was fantastic and quick, the food was faultless.
I can’t wait to come back!
Interesting place hidden on Kingsway @ Glen Waverley.

Staff were polite and attentive .

Service 5/5
Atmosphere 5/5
Food 3/5 (-1 for size)
Price 3/5

Small portions for mains and more like tasting plates for their medium.

Ordered their fish and beef cheeks.
Fish 4/5 🐟
Beef cheeks 2/5 🐂
The presentation was bit lacking .. spring onion strip 😂. Tough and corn salsa needs a bit more work.

Couldn't fault the flavours, very tasty dishes! However I'm a tiny girl with a big appetite 😋 would love more portions. I had the BBQ ½ Chicken but I was still hungry for more.

🤩4.5

😱Lizzie’s first impression: this is possibly one of the best Mexican restaurant I’ve been to in Melbourne. Although situated all the way in Glen Waverley, I think it’s worth travelling for.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: it was my first time trying white fish ceviche and it turned out to be so delicious - I loved the citrus flavours and the melon. We tried he prawn quesadillas and they were really different and nice - like a little cracker with a warm cooked prawn filling. The tacos were amazing - we tried the soft shell crab ones and it was really flavoursome.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: the main lamb dish was a bit of a let down - I almost rather ordering different tacos instead of a DIY - it needed some sauce as the slaw and the lamb just didn’t cut it.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place to go to for a date night or a celebration for something. I think prices are quite affordable especially for the quality
Eating Away Melbourne
Drove a solid 45 mins to Black Toro and felt exhausted after trying to find a car park for another 10 mins. Glen Waverly is really an evolving area eh...

Ordered some wine to start with and that loosen me up a bit thank god. We shared a few dishes among the three of us the prawn taco ish dish was definitely the highlight! Croquette wasn't too bad either so was the half chicken. Dessert was a bit too sweet and we made a mistake by ordering the sharing platter, it was a bit to much in the end...

Overall a great experience. Service was really quick and friendly!

Arrived to The Black Toro and left feeling that we had our experiences there filled, the vibe and food at Black Toro was great.

We started off with the Short Rib Taco, though wasn’t the best we’ve had, the favours were great, that followed along which was our favourite was the Parmesan Doughnuts, no words to describe how wonderful the flavours and texture was in this one, definitely worth it.

Out of all meals we had, I’d say that the wagyu sliders were our our least favourite with the cheese taking away the flavours of the beef by drowning if out.

The Prawn Quesadilla was a nice way to end.

All and all a great experience at Black Toro.
Remy Matthew
Good customer service. Nice Mexican joint in the suburbs. It's a bit pricey though. We loved the Chilli Basil drink, the corn and soft she'll crab tacos.. The burger and Croquettes were below average.. U really need the Mexican Chilli sauce to eat with to give it some flavor.
Srslyfoods
This area suburb of Melbourne is very eclectic and the range of cuisine is exceptional. Fast efficient service with a smile and great tasting food. Not very cheap but you get what you pay for.
Hasini
Grossily disappointed unfortunately. We ordered the Feed Me and we literally felt like the chef had chosen the worst items on the menu. After the meal, we thought maybe everything was the worst thing on the menu. Beautiful decor and friendly staff, nothing extraordinary but we definitely expected more for the price.
OverEating101
Another great option along glenn, they have a nice venue but it's a bit overpriced compared to everything else around it. Servings were also small. I wouldn't rush back here anytime soon.

They do some great corn though!
Karli Polster
The staff were lovely and so was the ambiente, but sadly not the food, not at all. We were a party of three and we all agreed on the way out that except for one of the five dishes we were served, the food was pretty much inedible. Very strange, really, given all the very positive feedback that this restaurant keeps receiving. Maybe it was because we arrived late (around 9 p.m.) and by that time the kitchen had been left in the hands of someone inexperienced? Who knows.

Nice, cosy place.

Ambience= lovely 9/10
Service= very good 9/10
Food= Feed me menu, very filling 9/10
Drinks= Nice but nothing too special 8/10

I’ll start by addressing the atmosphere. It’s lovely, illuminating and has a colourful scheme.
The service is thorough and excellent. They cater for any dietary requirements and provide in depth knowledge about the food.

The drinks are also great, varying from jarritos to beers, wines and cocktails.

The food is the main highlight and the feed me menu delivers in spades. The corn is fresh, juicy and has a lovely complimenting sauce with cheese to give more flavour.
The jalapeño croquettes are smooth, mildly spicy and addictive while the pork tacos are messy but succulent. The crab tacos are sensational and a must try, crispy and not at all oily.

Finally the pork shoulder slow cooked, with sweet apple sauce slaw and coconut rice, and lettuce is an odd combination, but works to bring in unique ideas to a flavoursome explosion in your mouth.

Overall it’s a nice mexican place. Mexican can be a hit or miss but Black Toro delivers.

I’m not going to write up a bio of what The Black Toro offer as that has already been covered countless times in other reviews. Maybe we expected too much after reading mostly positive reviews but we found it to be overpriced with very inconsistent service standards between staff. We ordered a range of dishes, none of which stood out as being particularly good quality or value. It wasn’t a terrible experience but we wouldn’t bother returning.
J
Had the set menu which was 5 dishes I believe. Great concept that you could choose and pick which set items you wanted / didn't want. The price for the amount of food is very worth it. Was so full afterwards. Everything was delicious!

A very lovely friend of mine suggested Black Toro and I’m a vegetarian so my thoughts are, ok, let’s have corn chips 😃 But the story changed immediately when we ordered. We decided to go for the feed me option, you pay $52 and get several courses. It was amazing, there are adapted my menu to Vegetarian and it was delicious, gosh never thought about it, that this place can do such a great veggie food. The service was amazing and so lovely, what a great Friday evening, thanks a lot of having us and shared such an amazing experience for and with us. P.S: On the picture you can see the Strawberry Margarita.. so deliciousssssssss

As someone who lived in California where Mexican food is very popular, I’m finding that this place certainly doesn’t taste Mexican at all, but obviously a lot better than most other Mexican restaurants in Melbourne. The food still tasted good and I think this is a good option around Glen Waverley.
Daisy
The green rice risotto was a bit boring as it was pretty much just rice with a few pieces of green vegetables. The soft shell crab tacos were very tasty. The service was pretty good as well. The aircon was a bit cold though.

Edit: the lunch set menu is delicious and very filling, but a little on the pricey side at $40 per person.
Sunny Days Melbourne
The Black Toro along the food haven of Kings Way in Glen Waverley is always full of people who seem to be enjoying their food so we decided to give it a go ourselves.

We booked a spot for 6 people and decided to go with the 'feed me' option where the chef prepares a selection of their mouth watering items. Among some of the highlights:

Jalapeño and cheese croquettes - these were crispy on the outside and cheesy (with a hint of jalapeño) on the inside. It was a great way to start our Black Toro experience.

BBQ corn - corn never tasted this good before! I loved the chipotle mayo which had a whiff of smokiness and this brought the spectacularly barbecued corn to another level

Beetroot salad - it wasn't the most attractive looking dish but it was certainly a welcome palate cleanser

Spicy pulled pork taco - I dare you to pull me away from this dish! It was fresh and tasty. The pork was well spiced and the cabbage brought a crunchy texture to this delightful dish.

Service at the Black Toro was top notch and the 'feed me' option is a fantastic way to sample a variety of their offerings.

As the Terminator once said...."I'll be back!"

A friend recommended this restaurant for their tapas, so I took my girlfriend and her parents there for them to try something new. The venue was nice and we got a table near the window. Service staff were friendly. We got the 'Feed Me' with dessert tasting plate for $68 pp to try a bit of everything.
BBQ corn was the best I have had, the smoky flavour was fully infused in the corn, mixed with the cheese and mayo = YUM! the cheese croquettes did not disappoint either, definitely up there with the corn. This was followed by soft crab taco and pulled pork taco, both were very average. Soft shell crab barely had any crab meat/taste, the pulled pork was very dry.
For the main, we were served lamb barbacoa, which came with a very generous portion size. Taste was OK, and the meat was a combination of yummy fatty bits and dry meat. It also came with coleslaw to cleanse the palate of oiliness. Not bad but missing the WOW factor as some of the other reviews mentioned.
You will be full at this point. But dessert was coming, and as someone who's not religiously into desserts, I was very pleasantly surprised by their dessert tasting plate. The chocolate marquis and the tres leches cake deserve special mentions, they were not overly sweet and the hazelnut fudge was just heavenly.
Overall great place for tapas, but choose your dishes carefully to maximize the experience. For what it's worth, the 'Feed Me' tasting plate is worth the money, but can get too pricey if you order each dish individually.

Food: 4
Service: 3
Ambiance: 3
Price: 3

Reasonable food and portion sizes. Some of the menu items were not the best and the tacos were a little dry. Staff seemed a little disoriented and did not know the menu well
RarePepeReviews
The service was really good and the food was delicious. The only reason this is not a 5 star rating is because of the price.

I would highly recommend the prawn quesadilla and the fried chicken as sides.

Went for a work function, "express lunch" option.
Called to ask whether or not they had a vegan option which they confidently assured us they catered for.
Starters were fine, the main was awful.
A big, flat, green splat of green rice on a plate-"risotto" was what I was served. It was rather sickening, not helped by the fact that it was swimming in oil and I wasn't the only one who thought so.
Please don't say you can cater for vegans if you can't.
Marsi26
We had the lunch package which was a fantastic deal. For a Sunday catch up it was great because we didn’t have to think and they easily accommodated our vegan friend. Nothing was difficult. The wine was included and we were full with just the starters. The main of lamb shoulder was too much — one girlfriend who wasn’t vegetarian doesn’t eat lamb but the serve was still generous! We took the leftovers home in a box. Our waitress Alexa was a joy ! She was attentive but not overly so and always smiled. Will come back with my boys next time!

I think a lot has been said about the quality of the food provided by this restaurant.
I will only mention the problems with this restaurant. First of all, the price. This place sort of serves small portions tapas so you need to order a lot to be full, but the problem is when you order a lot, you end up paying something close to fine dining price.
The time allowed to dine. They have two sessions for dinner, to maximise earnings. So if you book the first session, you will feel very rushed. The staff will constantly remind you to eat faster and get out of here asap. It's so rushed that you can't even have dessert. The bill will be put in front of you without you asking for it. So what do diners do? They all head to pancake parlour after they are kicked out. So I wonder why don't I just sit myself at pancake parlour to begin with? At least I can take my time to eat and chat.
Overly priced and impolite services.

Came here for dinner on a saturday night. The location is a nightmare to find parking. A friend arrived 20mins after the booking time. We were being harassed about giving the table back on time not once, not twice but three times. We gave clear instructions about bringing a baby in the booking, and yet no high chair for the baby or space for the pram was provided unless was asked. The food were just so-so... We ordered bbq corn, kimchi salmon tartare, soft shell crab tacos, spicy pulled park tacos, wagyu sliders, prawn quesadila to share between 3 adults. All these already costed $50 pp. With no drinks ordered. I honestly think the food were nothing special for the price we paid. 20 mins before we needed to give the table back, we were rejected to order dessert because we were told there is not enough time. We left restaurant unhappy. I honestly think this restaurant shouldn't kick customers out by the price they are charging and the services providing.
Love Food
Coming over to sample their ‘feed me’ tasting plate.
We pay $52pp
With that money, I am expecting something different from the other places.
Jalapeño and cheese croquette started of pretty nicely.
BBQ corn seems to be everyone’s fav.
Soft crab taco was just so so. I didn’t feel the wow factor.
Fried Chicken w aioli(Mayo) - I would love a bit more flavor in this
Pulled pork taco was ok. The pork was flavorful but not overpowering
Main: bbq chicken w rice.
I don’t like to say bad things but this dish ruins all impression.
It’s chicken on bbq. W lemon.
The chicken is undercooked as per pic and is raw on some parts. No seasoning on the chicken. It’s disappointing.
Overall I don’t feel the wow factor at all.
Alex
The food was good, the servings were small but tasty. I did feel like it was a very rushed dining experience- the waitress kept a close eye on us and as soon as we’d finished the last mouthful of a dish it’d be whisked away. A minute or so after being served our desert we were asked to leave as the table was needed for the next seating. Maybe the restaurant needs to rethink their seating times. It was not a nice feeling being asked to leave and feeling pressured to eat quickly. We had no control over how fast the food was brought out so I thought it was quite rude to ask guests to depart when the final course had just been served. Next time we’ll book the later seating, if there is a next time!

Great Spanish tapas spot on the busy strip. Food and service was great and ordered the feedme menu. Beautiful dishes and caters for all dietary requirements . Parking in the area is a nightmare so arrive in good time as it took us 15 minutes of driving around before we found a parking on a Friday night
Sebastian A
The Black Toro has a great selection of traditional Spanish food with a twist. The food brings back memories of my travels to Madrid and Barcelona.
Savvy And Lifestyle
Offering an array of flavoursome dishes in the heart of Glen Waverley. Been visiting here s few times over the year. The Waghu sliders are my favourite as they're full of flavour and always cooked to perfection. Staff are always warm and welcoming. The only problem I have is the mains are a bit on the pricey side for me.
Carly Wang
Went here with 3 other people today. Upon going inside we were shown to our seats and the server was really nice and attentive.

We decided upon getting the $40 p/head entree and main course of a chef's choice. We got three entrees each with 4 servings each including a slider, a croquette and barbequed corn. All three were average but pretty small portions.

Then the mains came. Or rather... main. Instead of getting 4 individual main dishes, we got a lamb on the bone with some sauce, a small bowl of coconut rice that would have fed myself alone and some chips. Whilst the lamb was nice, it was a little misleading just getting the one dish and calling that all our four of mains and we felt pretty cheated leaving the restaurant.

The cherry on the top was a bug on my unwashed lettuce.

Don't think we'll be back.
Flaming Goose70
Always wanted to give this place a visit but we were somewhat let down. We ordered a few small dishes: Kingfish Ceviche, Salmon Tostada and Soft Shell Crab Tacos and boy were they small. Not exactly full of flavour as we expected with Mexican food. We shared a main dish BBQ Barramundi which was also very small dressed with a few zucchini slices. We left hungry!

I've visited Black Toro a few times over the years. The ambience is gorgeous, the staff are always super welcoming and the food is incredible. We went last week and we didn't have a reservation but we lucky enough to get a table. Albeit it was outside but they have heaters so it was still a really comfortable spot. We had the croquettes and mushroom empanadas, especially the home-made chimmichurri that comes with the empanadas is to die for. Next we had the chicken and the mini wagyu sliders and eggplant taquitos. Wasn't overly amazed by the sliders or the taquitos but the rest was really nice.
SHAZ
Really good flavors, not too big of a fan of the whole sharing. Would rather everyone have their own individual plates. I think it’s fairly pricey compared to other Glen Waverley eateries.
Let There Be Food
We were extremely impressed with our evening experience at Black Toro! The corn and croquettes are a must have and they are amazing!! My personal favourite is the fried chicken wings!! They are no normal chicken wings they are delicious!! Wagyu beef burgers are the beat I’ve ever had!! The main meals are a bit overpriced for size but nonetheless they were still great meals!! We had the fish and achiote chicken. You should definitely check it out we thoroughly enjoyed it!! The desserts are also amazing!!!

Visited Black Toro after a few recommendations from a few people.
The service was excellent and the staff were very friendly.
We ordered the fries, soft shell crab tacos, wagyu sliders, chicken ribs and the pork hock for the main!
Everything was pretty delicious! The pork hock was a little bit dry which was a little disappointing since having heard good things about it! We would’ve liked a bit more sauce with the pork hock.
However would like to return a try few of the other dishes that were on the menu!
Billy Gats
Definitely not worth the money. The food was average at best. We got the feed me option which cost $100 for 2 people and they only brought out a few dishes which cost about $65 after doing the calculations from the menu afterwards. The only good thing I can say about the place is that the staff were friendly. I will definitely not go back again.
Jess
food here was pretty average. we ordered the Prawn quesadilla, Croquettes, Spicy pulled pork taco, Lamb barbocoa and the fries. everything lacked in flavour besides the fries. i think that the lamb needed like a sauce to it because it was quite dry as well

Modern twist on Mexican food! Staff are friendly but the space is small. Had a booking for 8.15 but was seated only at 8.30 ( small negative but booking is highly recommended). The food though is worth it! Absolutely Yum! We tried:
Croquettes: creamy, spicy, crispy and all sorts of goodness!
Scallops: my least favourite dish of the night, felt the herb crumb overpowered the scallop.
Mushroom empanada: buttery pastry and the dipping sauce gives it life!
Fried chicken ribs: must try! Light crunchy batter and great amount of spice. The mayo is just the perfect accompaniment.
Wagyu beef slider: not so Mexican .. more American but full of flavour. The meat was juicy!
Beef short rib taco: 10/10, great flavour, great texture and the meat was tender as! Must try!
Prawn quesadilla: heaps of prawn, the taco shell was crispy and the mayo was yum.
Peanut butter cheesecake: omg I love this dessert! The honeycomb is slightly bitter and super airy. The chocolate ice cream is the perfect balance to the rich peanut butter cheesecake. Must try!

Avoid mushroom taquitos. Pork tacos were perfect. Chips amazing. Will be back to try more. Ambiance good. Bar a bit slow. But overall worth trying.

Had dinner with friends Saturday night, place was busy but service was fast and seating comfortable. We shared the guacamole and chips, the salmon with the nori toastadas, chicken ribs and soft shell crab tacos. The guac was yum but too small a portion for how many chips we had so we asked for more and were charged $5 which i thought was pretty steep for a scoup of it. I wasnt sure if i would like the salmon but it was delicious, the chicken ribs were nice but nothing special, im sure some of the other menu items are a bit more exciting than them. The soft shell tacos however, sooo yum, highly recommend them. Overall great experience, will definitely go back. A word of warning for those considering going, give yourself PLENTY of time to find a park. It took us 30mins of driving around to find a park and as a result were late which means we had to scoff our food and go.
Stevo
This place is amazing! The food was delicious. We ordered the ‘feed me’ which had a lot of different dishes and there was plenty of food to go around. Everything was perfect. We will definitely be back!
Nat Nat
A cozy place with friendly staff. We ordered the $52 pp Feed me dish on a weekday lunch.
Slightly disappointed for the first two entree as they are quite dry and no surprise on flavor. However the mini beef burger, pull pork tacos and main fish dishes were great! The only critics would be the over powering of salt in the coconut creamy rice, would be better if they swap one of the entree to dessert.
MelG
We are so happy with the quality & taste of the food at The Black Toro. Instead of ordering mains we ordered a few small dishes to share. There was not one dish to fault. Great ambience in the restaurant. Staff were friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back here again. 100% recommend this place.
Olivia B
A local restaurant that always looks buzzing, we decided to check it out ourselves. Despite visiting on a weeknight, Black Toro still had a great ambience. Our table was slightly squished in as I was almost back to back with the other table and we got forgotten about a few times (our wine took a good 15 minutes to come). We managed to over order (as usual) but the positive was we got to try lots of items on the menu including the corn, croquettes, soft shell tacos and hard shell tacos, and the sliders. Couldn’t fault any of the dishes, they were all stunning 😍 A new favourite local for Mexican food done extraordinarily well.

very very very overpriced. for tiny tiny tiny portions of food. for some reason or another they are always packed... staff are friendly enough. atmosphere a bit cramped
Been wanting to get in here for awhile, but could never get a booking. Finally snagged one on a Monday night. Parking absolutely chockers so arrive early or build in ten/fifteen minutes to find a car park. Restaurant is small but nice with a good range of food for even fussy eaters. Staff were attentive early but as the evening slowed down, they did too. That being said, every time we caught their attention, they were quick and friendly to help. Food tasty, and authentic, we were a table of six and there was little food left over at the end of it.
The World’s My Oyster
Overall a very tasty food on the $52pp “Feed Me” options but the quantity and size is definitely on the small side. We had to go get dumplings afterwards as we were still hungry after their set menu 🤦🏻‍♀️ We came last Wednesday and sampled the “Feed Me” option as it was our first time. Interestingly, the waiter boasted it would be “plenty” of food to fill us up which was certainly not the case (read until end). The grilled corn came first and was very tasty with the mildly spicy mayo-like sauce but in my opinion I remember the grilled corn at Mamasita in the city being more flavourful. The jalapeño croquettes could not be faulted and had really creamy potato filling with well balanced jalapeños heat. Kingfish ceviche was also nice and the dressing was very refreshing and zingy (probably the acid from curing the fish). I was MOST IMPRESSED by their tacos, the soft shell crab taco had crab that was very meaty and you can really taste the crab flavour. Some sushi places which serve soft shell crab get the really skinny ones, with only the crunchy leg bits which obviously have no flavour except for the crunch. The pulled pork taco was similarly amazing, I hate pulled pork because I feel it is always sloppy and like a stew cooked for too long. This pulled pork on the other hand had a lot of texture and the taco shells (I wonder if they make these in house?) had a very pleasant corn flavour that is usually missing from processed supermarket taco shells. For the main, we were given the beef short rib which came with a side of tortillas and slaw. The beef was melt in the mouth tender and very flavourful. We loved making our own tortilla wraps at the table.

My only criticism is that the serving size is quite small. We got to try many things but most of them were only one biteful morsels like the croquettes and the ceviche. It was disappointing the feed me option only includes one main to share between two. Compared to other feed me menus e.g at Chin Chin or other places, it is common to serve one main per person? Or at least if the main was one dish, the beef rib could have came with two ribs instead of one. It was also disappointing that no dessert was included in the standard feed me and dessert was an extra $16pp. While I did enjoy the food, I did not think their feed me menu offered good value... I still can’t decide if we would have been more full if we had order a la carte. We were still hungry afterwards but the kitchen had already closed for hot food so we actually had to get dumplings after our meal! Although Chin Chin and those other places in the city charge $65pp for feed me, all the times I have been they actually keep bringing out dishes until you are full and they offer one dessert per person or at least shared dessert.

Would I come back to Black Toro? Yes since the food is very nice and I would given them a chance at their other dishes. But I wouldn’t order the feed me menu.
Good Food Good Mood
This had been on my radar for years but I never prioritised a visit, and frankly it was mostly due to the indecipherable menu. While it sure sounds authentic if the majority of words aren’t in English I have no idea what I’m ordering. But when a friend suggested dinner in Glen Waverly I thought it was finally time to try it out (my husband having been before also vouched for it). I have to say I was rather impressed. Our helpful waitress translated some of the dishes for us and they were all extremely delicious.
I was a bit disappointed to see the watermelon margarita listed on the Zomato menu was no longer available 😭 but I consoled myself with a yummy eggplant taquito. This was a perfect dish with the zing of the lemon yoghurt and crunch of fresh lettuce.
We also had the crab tacos and the prawn quesadilla. I loved that the quesadilla came with the jalapeño mayo on the side so you could adjust your level of heat to taste (mild for me!). We then went for the lamb shoulder which was a large sharing dish and a bit of a diy taco situation. This was rather fabulous if a little oily.
We finished with the peanut butter cheesecake. I wouldn’t call it a cheesecake as such as it was extremely deconstructed but it was very tasty all the same.
This wasn’t a perfect meal for me but in light of the removal of half point scoring it was near enough

This place was recommended by a friend, was impressed with the reviews as well, hence headed out on a cold Saturday night. I thought I had booked a table on zomato, but it wasn't as per their system when the staff checked. But kudos to the staff, the kind lady obliged to give us a table outside. No complains coz they've the heater turned on. The staff were welcoming n courteous.

Speaking about food, we ordered bbq corn, fried chicken and softshell crab taco. We loved all of them. The sauce literally tingles the taste bud. Plating was appetizing! We definitely recommend this place for its warm ambience n yummy food and super staff. We will definitely be back, until then relish the pics I posted 😁😁

We only had to wait for a few minutes before we were seated despite not having a reservation which I thought was quite lucky. The female service staff were helpful and polite. The food arrived in a timely manner. We liked the croquettes, the corn, empanada and the quesadilla. The sliders and tacos not so much. We ordered two appetisers, four small mains and a large main but we were told that it wouldn’t be enough so we ordered one more large main. We were already full after the two appetisers and four small mains but nevertheless it’s a chance to try their much talked about lamb. It was good but wouldn’t come back here in a hurry. What is appalling though is the rude waiter who served me when I paid for the bill. He said we’ll pray for it yeah when I tapped my card into their eftpos machine. Mate, the black toro is not Vue de Monde or Attica so don’t act so condescendingly towards your customers. That’s just poor etiquette from a mid tier restaurant. China Bar might be a cheap restaurant but I never experienced this from their wait staff. No offense to the other wait staff at The Black Toro. You guys are okay.

Really great menu that always changes here and there but nevertheless always amazing food! Highly recommend the corn, sliders and soft shell tacos!
Been here countless times for countless occasions and it’s always a treat!

The Black Toro sits snuggly in the popular Kingsway Restaurant strip in Glen Waverley and had been on my radar for some time... mostly because of the good thing I heard about the slow cooked lamb shoulder and the cocktails. It was quite well packed when we arrived for the early sitting to celebrate my mother in laws birthday. Service was courteous and prompt and our waiting staff were helpful describing dishes and suggesting quantities to order.

The cocktail list was impressive and yet again I found myself with the most girly looking cocktail on the table with the Toro Express being the most pretty. The most worthy Mexican beer in the menu was the Negra Modelo which put the coronas of the world to shame. I first had this beer in Mexico so fond memories with every gulp.

Our waiter recommended 4-5 small dishes and we obliged with kingfish ceviche, sweet corn, mushroom empanadas and the most baby but delicious beef tacos. All these dishes were delicious but on the small side. We ordered a couple of mains with one to suit the pescatarians in our group. The meat lovers at my end were frothing over the slow cooked lamb shoulder from the lamb barbacoa dish while our seafood friends enjoyed a John Dory that I’m told was delicious when all elements of the dish were consumed at once. Our waiting staff could have been a little more proactive in guiding us with our mains. The Dory was in no way adequate to consume just by itself and staff could have recommended this getting paired with one of the sides or tortillas ... it was just a lump of beautifully cooked fish and I feel they dropped the ball a little here.

We had a great Argentinian Malbec wine and all shared a nice peanut butter cheesecake for dessert. I finished feeling just satisfied but not full. I could have eaten more.

I found the set dining time felt a little rushed. Our drinks and wine came out after our small plate entrees and when we were presented with our bill without being asked and before we had finished our bottled wine.... due to initial delay in getting this to us. We were actually asked (politely) to leave well shy of a 2 hour mark and on reflection we were probably after a more meandering relaxed dining experience to that offered my Black Toro. I would also urge them to consider space here. The whole menu is about sharing but the table we were given didn’t lend itself to that kind of eating at all.

Overall a bit mixed on Black Toro. Certainly the food we had was great but our overall experience could have been better.

Have always left this place always feeling fully satiated and well taken care of. Everything I ordered was enjoyable, but I should make a special mention of the super crunchy soft shell crab taco and tenderlicious beef rib. The watermelon and mint mocktail is noteworthy too. Wait staff was very attentive and helpful to first timers at this tapas/grazing-friendly joint. Atmosphere is great for everything - big groups or date nights! Only warning to heed us that the guacamole appetiser is quite a small portion for its price.

Amazing service, my fiance unfortunately knocked her glass of spritz and they spontaneously and free of charge replaced it with a new one. We tried the FEED ME option:5 starters and 1 main. We enjoyed everything: corn, Croquettes, tacos, salmon, chicken.... for sure we will come back to try the slow cooked lamb

I visited Thursday night for a 7.45 booking. First impressions were great, the staff were friendly, and sat us down a few minutes early. The restaurant has a cool and funky vibe. We were presented with the menu quickly, given a short explanation, and a few minutes to place our drink order/peruse the menu. We chose the following dishes: croquettes, corn bread, chips, fried chicken, wagyu sliders, and pulled pork tacos.

Unfortunately we were too full to eat the tacos (hard to believe considering my girlfriend and I are big eaters). The rest of the dishes were superb. Cooked to perfection. So tasty and filling.

The croquettes were crunchy and were presented with a beautiful creamy sauce (my girlfriend told me off for trying to lick the plate - it was that good..). She also described the sliders as the ‘best she has ever had’. The bun was soft, meat was tender and juicy.

Lastly, the fried chicken and chips were straight out insane, and corn bread was flavoursome and interesting.

Well done to the very talented chefs, lovely waitress and great managers for this establishment.

Just here for a quick takeaway coffee but I very much liked what I saw and what I had. The Black Toro is a lovely place out in Glen Waverley. On a gorgeous warm day like today it was open to the street and subject to the gentle breeze. The lovely English barista/server here could teach the odd inner city server all about hospitality and service. Warm, polite and engaging she was also wonderfully skilled and efficient. The long macchiato she made or procured was a beauty and was delivered to me with a smile and a cheery goodbye. It was a cracker - a perfect richly flavoured Melbourne coffee - and gave me all I needed for the lengthy trip home. Nice place. I liked it. I’ll seek to eat here in future.

Went as a group and ordered food to share.
Food was great, with everyone enjoying the flavours and the food came out in a timely manner.
The beef short rib and chicken was a bit pricey for the sized served as “grande plates”

Best to go with more then 2 people to be able to try a good selection of the menu.

Decor and staff were pleasant.

Been here sooo many times due to the rating but always left feeling like it was so so ... so I’ve never recommended the black toro before . There was nothing wrong with the food or the service but I feel like there are a lot more Better Mexican places out there , the food was just missing something

Sophisticated Mexican in Glen Waverly. Went with as a group of four on a Saturday night - service was excellent.
We had the soft shell crab tacos - delish.
If you're looking at the mains highly recommend the lamb shoulder - very generous serving, enough meat to get 8 taco fillings.

was expecting the food to be better. Got the feed me course, but we both were still hungry at the end of it, and my wife isn't the biggest eater.

Love this place! Hubby and I routinely head there every 6 months or so for date night and are always pretty happy. I love that the menu changes and there's always something new that grabs my attention. Corn, croquettes, tacos, sliders, slow cooked lamb shoulder - it's all good. My one complaint would be the cocktail list , which could do with a revamp. Always lovely service.

Have been here many, many times for lunch and dinner. Always great food, the feed me is great, no need to choose off the menu it’s all done for you, just enjoy the company you are with. Staff are always lovely and I always look forward to the next visit.

Wasn't blown away by the food, but it's still decent Mexican! The staff were highly attentive and really hospitable. Dishes were presented beautifully. Won't be back in a hurry, but I wouldn't mind coming back in the future !

Love the food here! :) Good ambience for a romantic date night too. The pork hock was very sinful with an amazing crunch from the caramelized skin (omg) but so worth it. Also had their lamb which was pretty good but I still prefer the pork hock. Enjoyed their croquettes, corn and tacos as well. Don't miss their deconstructed cheesecake. Yum! Definitely a standout on bustling Kingsway!

I had very high expectations of this restaurant as every weekend when I walk passed it it was pack full. All the reviews appear to be great as well. I like modern Mexican food. I expect it to be full of flavours, and the restaurant to have a cheerful or colourful decor.
From the outside, the Black Toro looks sophisticated with monotone colours. That I do not mind.
My husband and I ordered the soft shell crab tacos and pulled pork tacos for entrees, followed up with ocean trout and braised beef for mains. The flavours were bland which was extremely disappointing for the both of us. We wouldn’t even call the food Mexican, perhaps just normal western food with slight Mexican influence.
The plating wasn’t exciting as well I didn’t even bothered taking pictures.
I would score the food 2.5, but the service push it up to 3.0.
We won’t be coming back again.

My friends and I tried a selection of different entree items including the beef sliders, soft shell crab and pull pork tacos, corn and fried ,chicken. Overall there was a good balance of flavours however a bit pricey in my opinion. However it was a good first experience.

The Black Toro is one of my favourite restaurants in Glenny. Situated in a very Asian suburb, The Black Toro offers a very good point of difference! Very good for a dinner date.

Friendly staff and we had $48 Feed me course. I requested low carb diet. I was very excited to go there as it it always busy restaurant and finally booked with 2 hours restriction table seat.
My friends seems enjoying their standard course and my meal was good except few dishes which was bit tasteless.

Amazing food!!!@ we had fried chicken, pulled pork tacos and the lamb shoulder...highly recommend this place....book atleast a day in advance!!!

I have dined here ages ago, but my friends and I returned the other day and opted for the feed me style menu. We were all very happy with every dish that came out! The corn is an old favourite, and the soft shell crab and pulled pork tacos were delicious. But the shredded crab on a tortilla chip, and the fried chicken were unexpected delights! I also really loved the BBQ chicken…it had to be one of the most succulent main chicken dishes I’ve eaten. I’m usually into big and bold flavours, but the subtle flavour of the chicken was perfect. We didn’t venture for the dessert as we were full to the brim, but when I return the dessert tasting plate looked divine. And I remember eating the peanut butter deconstructed cheesecake last time which was phenomenal. Staff are friendly, and a great contemporary setting, with mood lighting...would be great for a date night!

Black Toro first opened its door in 2012. Since then, it has become a formidable establishment along Kingsway, a local favourite for good food and good times. Serving up modern Latin American food, Black Toro is often at capacity so always make reservations. For a group size of 3 - 4, I recommend just getting a good selections of their tapas-style entrees 'Poco Plates' - highly recommended are the Grilled Corn on the Cob, the Crispy Softshell Crab tacos, the Spicy Pulled Pork Taco, TBT Fried Chicken just to name more than a few. The mains are very big and if you are very keen, consider the main as a share plate for at least 2 greedy people.

Black Toro now also do breakfast, which is a very nice addition, considering that Kingsway is being reinvented as a Brunch location.

We decided to go for a long drive to try out this place as we didn't mind their other restaurant, Sezar, but we regretted it. Mexican food my foot! Just adding chipotle sauce to any old dish doesn't make it mexican.

We got several of the dishes and they were all quite bland and underwhelming. Maybe they had an off Friday night based on the other reviews being mostly positive but our experience was bad.

The service was excellent.

What a restaurant
Such a variety of different cuisines - grilled corn, croquettes, chicken poblana, soft shell crab, its all incredible
One of the best restaurants in the south eastern suburbs

My wife and I had a "feed me" experience. The food was sublime, beautifully cooked, lots of flavour and with the very friendly staff it was a very memorable experience. We will be back for sure.

A fantastic experience. Food was amazing and the staff were incredibly helpful. The crispy pork hock was our favourite. We will definitely be back!

The customer service at The Black Toro was outstanding! The friendly staff assisted in recommending their favourite dishes in precise detail. Food was delicious and arrived in a timely manner - the corn on the cob was full of flavour and the spicy pulled pork tacos and wagyu beef sliders were mouthwatering. The highlight of the evening was the beef rib grande plate - it was soft and tender. Easily the best rib I've ever had! 10/10 would recommend 😊

Loved this restaurant. First time coming and we did the "Feed Me", which was absolutely delicious. Would recommend. (Also recommend the white wine sangria).

Good food! Dropped by Friday after work for a quick bite with no booking, inside was fully booked but there was heated seating outside. I had the soft shell crab taco for entree and achiote braised short rib - loved both!! The nacho tlayuda my partner had was also nice. Would like to come back for more of the menu. Staff were also lovely.

Beautiful food & great service. We made a booking but had to wait 5 mins to be seated, in that time we were offered complimentary drinks. Went with a group of girlfriends for a birthday and we ordered the surprise menu. All the food was amazing and more than enough for all of us! Only one down side is that the tables are a little small but not a big deal. Loved it!

Fabulous food. Melbourne cbd quality dining experience in the heart of suburbia. A bit cramped in the evenings so not necessarily kid/pram friendly. The desserts are amazing!

LIT⭐️!: The starters was the star of the show. The soft shell crab taco, corn cob and wagyu sliders were all jam packed with flavour. The lamb shoulder was so generous in size that us 3 girls could not finish. Customer service was great, they refilled our drinks for us and were all really nice.

NOT SO LIT: you are sure to order more tortillas as there wasn't enough for the huge size of lamb. If they had a sauce in addition, this course would be bomb!

Really loved it overall, thanks for having us! X

Absolutely delicious!!
My only fault with the place is the price range, but you pay for the quality of the food as well as the service, which it's well worth!
