We ordered takeaway from this Japanese restaurant. The place has bar and normal seating inside .
We ordered the chicken katsu bento which came with a generous amount of sides. The pasta was light and the seaweed salad was full of flavour. The rice itself was well flavoured and surprisingly had bits of meat mixed inside. The katsu was well battered wand crisp but the bottom half was slightly soggy haven't being left on the shredded cabbage

Been to a number of spots in Melbourne that do omakase and can confidently say that this is the best one to date! Not only do you get one piece per fish, you get two whole pieces per fish for pretty much the same set menu price at any other omakase.
My favourite was the first fish (can’t remember what type) but love it when certain cuts are seasoned with just a bit of salt or yuzu. So simple yet so flavoursome. The aburi pieces are good too but nothing outstanding. Was my first time eating eel as a nigiri piece and enjoyed it. However that cheesy oyster - it’s a no from me. Worth trying, but I would not be ordering that as an extra piece.
Chefs were friendly, attentive and patient while I took a photo of each serving before savouring; our plates were frequently changed too, which I appreciate so much!!! (no doubt a clean plate free of sauce or leftover rice photographs way better). I’m glad the chef took notice of how quickly I went through the ginger on my plate and generously topped up. Highly recommend this place; worth the travel and hope to come back soon.
There is a reason why you need to book ahead, and every seating seems to be full. You know what to expect, and you are never disappointed.

Shira Nui has been on my list to hit up and seeing as work was super close to it, it was definitely a lunch break kinda place. Luckily for me, there was a lunch menu and lunch only had two sessions, 12-1PM and 1-2PM which meant, we had to leave on the dot. We visited on a Friday lunch and boy oh boy were we glad that we made a booking because it was jam-packed! We were seated immediately and as the minutes ticked by, more and more people came in and a few people were turned away due to how busy it was.
A "No Soya Sauce" Review.
None of that hand-rolls and sushi sushi, Shira Nui is a great location in the suburbs if you don't want to travel to the CBD to eat great Japanese food. But this review speaks for the omakase.
We indulged in the omakase using our life savings, but it was totally worth the experience. 9 types of nigiri X 2 and you get 18 carefully crafted pieces, each served and prepared fresh by the chef at a good pace. Each type of nigiri served in the order that it was - was not overwhelming as each piece is served to introduce the next and refresh your pallete from the richness of the last. It was more than enough to eat. Waiter staff were polite and helpful to omakase patrons. We hope to return for the omakase, as it is different every once in a while.
We came here for dinner the other night and loved the service and food here. We started off with the entrée sized sashimi plate and the cheesy oyster sushi which is priced per piece. The sashimi was fresh but we LOVED the cheesy oyster sushi the most. We then ordered the beef tataki and the miso sea perch, the beef was sliced thin and the salad below was extremely tasty. The miso sea perch was by far my favourite, the mjso creamy and the fish was cooked to perfection- I wish this dish was larger
We decided to visit this popular Japanese restaurant in Glen Waverley the other night. Shira Nui is always extremely busy - we called in the day before and managed to book a table for us on a Thursday night at 8pm.
Although the food is quite pricey here, it is very delicious and high quality. The sashimi was extremely fresh, and the unagi was to die for. The only thing I would say to pass would be the tempura prawn roll as it was a little bit bland.
Will have to come back to try more dishes!

I came here for dinner for my birthday and it was great. The sashimi was really fresh and the sushi was delicious and flavourful. The tempura was a little oily but otherwise quite tasty. The beef tataki salad was also great but a little bit too salty at the bottom where the leaves were soaked in sauce.
The service was friendly and efficient, and they were patient with our questions. The restaurant is quite small so it's necessary to book a table.

Went to shira nui tday for their value lunch sets & they are so value for money! There was a good selection of sets to choose from ranging from the under $20 to $27! Each set comes with an appetizer & miso soup & the portions were so generous! It is no wonder that this cozy establishment is always so packed during lunch. We ordered the unagi don and the sashimi lunch special which came very promptly. I had the sashimi salad which consisted of thick chunks of tuna, salmon & kingfish sashimi which was freshly cut by the chef. There were also thinner slices of tuna and salmon tossed in some sort of salad dresssing to go with the fresh greens. This set came with an additional chawanmushi and a bowl of rice. The sashimi were very fresh and I could not believe I was only paying $25 for this quality. The chawanmushi however was the star of the show for me. It was so delicate and soft, exactly like the texture of silken tofu. By the time I got through 1/2 of what was in the set I was already pretty full! Shira Nui really has such bang for the buck lunch deals that are worth every penny! I recommend booking though as they are always so busy even though we got lucky today and had a seat without making a booking prior.
I've been coming to Shira Nui for the last 5 years, usually for lunch, and have never been disappointed. The Chirashi Lunch Special and Sashimi Lunch Special are my favourite.
The sashimi is always fresh, make sure to try the omakase if you can. The omakase menu range is smaller than other places I've been to but you get two (generous) servings each.
Everyone I've recommended the restaurant to have all been impressed.
If you want to the authentic sushi experience without travelling to Japan, this is the place to go. Second time here to try the omakase- excellent experience. Chef and staff very friendly, seafood quality fantastic. Omakase portion is also very generous, definitely worth the price.

It was good awesome in Glen Waverley area and fresh sashimi but it wasn’t as much as variety mainly salmon salmon salmon . We always come for dinner with friends . One time we came late than the booking time , till next section even we haven’t finish our meal even we still ordering drinks the staff still kick us out 😂, but it’s fine we were late tho .

Shira NOICE. Fresh, flavoursome, professional, homely, delicious - let's break it down for you.
Fresh: Sashimi and sushi are super fresh - as Missy Elliot would say, these dishes can "work it" (is this reference too outdated?). The sashimi is full of flavour and has a beautiful, even almost creamy sort of texture. Almost surprising how good the quality is for such a small establishment.
Flavoursome: I must admit, I have only come to Shira Nui for its lunch menus, so I can't speak for a lot of its dishes - but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The chirashi zushi lunch special comes with appetisers and chawan mushi (steamed egg) and they are goooooooooood. The latter in particular shines with its creamy egg, perfectly salted with soy sauce, with hidden tasty treasures of seafood at the bottom. Like mouthfuls of a warm hearth (idk man, there's something very homely about the texture and flavours). Perfect set up for the chirashi bowl, with its beautifully seasoned rice and decent variety of sashimi.
Professional: Great service. Small establishment so it feels pretty intimate and you're well looked after. Reservations are a must as it's often booked out.
Homely: Intimate in atmosphere, homely in flavours. There's something personal and careful about the way the dishes are made - could it be... love ?!
Delicious: Try it for yourself. The price is on the upside and depending on your stomach size, you might not be completely full, but the quality, the flavours, the calm.... Slow down. Give yourself a treat.

Ordered the rice bowl and soba noodles with tampura.
By far the best Japanese food I have tried in Melbourne. The rice was perfectly seasoned (wish I knew how make it like this at home) and the sashimi pieces were all fresh and delicious. The tampura batter was light and crispy and perfectly highlighted the natural flavours of the prawns, eggplant and sweet potato. The soba noodles were just right adenta and the soup was what you would expect from a good restaurant in Japan. The sides were also delicious. Very worth the price for lunch and the quality you get.
Unforgettable. Omakase sushi set delivers a unique taste and experience. I highly recommend Shira Nui for those sushi lovers out there. You must reserve a table in advance as they are often booked out. Upon entering, the restaurant resonated a welcoming vibe and a set out resembling a Japanese sushi bar. Behind it, the head sushi chef prepares and entertains as we watched the art of making a sushi. I recalled the salmon melting in my mouth as I sat there appreciating that moment - a rare experience for myself. Shira Nui, definitely worth the value with the food quality exceeding the high end sushi restaurants.

One of my favourite Japanese restaurants in town! Not only is the omakase great, but also the small dishes. Particularly love their steamed egg, agadashi tofu and tempura. I'm a frequent customer for their omakase - quality is great but I would suggest the restaurant to avoid serving too many grilled fish/seafood sushi coz one time it happened that all of the courses are grilled.
Even though Shira Nui has been around for years, it continues to serve up exquisite and consistently brilliant Japanese fare.
Everything is freshly prepared and each bite is mind numbingly delicious! The lunch deals here are exceptional value. Booking a spot well in advance is a must, to avoid disappointment.

Can't be better! Perfect Japanese restaurant, the oyster sushi is a surprise, and I have never had oysters that are so creamy and non-fishy smell. Also seaweed wraped sushi is kinda speciality here. I ordered the OMAKASE, which costs $100 per person, a bit expensive for causal dinning, but would be a perfect place for important dinners.
Possibly the best dining experience I’ve had in years...... fresh ingredients prepared skillfully by seasoned chief, the staff members are lovely.
Shira Nui is a neighbourhood gem in Glen Waverley. When one craves good Japanese omakase, you can always count on Hiro-san to serve you delicious and fresh sushi. And one always listens attentively when he says "with soy sauce" or "without". I have frequented Shira Nui more times that I can remember, every time that I have been here, I always have the omakase - the grilled wagyu beef sushi just melts in your mouth and the last course is always a delight, their baked oyster sushi...YUM!
Strongly recommend to make a reservation even for lunch! I was rejected once for walk-in lunch, then I successfully made a reservation a few days ago before the second time. Friendly staff, impeccable service, cozy interior, ask for the bar table if you wanna see the chef handling with the sushi and sashimi. Tried the nigiri and chirashi lunch set, they both come with a miso soup and a small plye appetizer dish. The fish quality was alright, but still not a lot of strong fish taste, im a bit disappointed that the sushi rice didnt have enough vinegar taste for me. But the overall food quality worth the price of their lunch set...so can give it a try but dont give too much expectation.

Friday date night with hubby. We’re looking for some nice food to end our night. Heard a lot about this small Japanese restaurant in busy Glen Waverley. We try our luck without reservation before 7pm. Got bar seating and decided to their sushi Omasake.
For $90 per head they serve around 11 types of sushi, each come with 2 sushi! I got pretty full after the 7th; equivalent to 14 pieces of sushi.
Like the one wrap with seaweed, never had it anywhere else in past experience.
A very satisfied dinner, would definitely come back for quality sushi.
They do make the best sushi among all eastern suburbs, even when comparing to the CBD areas, it’s still a really good choice for sushi lovers. Their ingredients are always fresh and skills of chefs are incredible. To be honest, the food they serve is even better than the ones I had in Japan. However, it is a small place, so you will have to book a table for sure. Btw, average of a dinner is $100 pp. if you are first time here, try their set course.
This popular little Japanese restaurant is an absolute gem in Glen Waverley. Taken here recently on a date and the atmosphere, service and the food was all delightful. Staff were attentive and the food arrived without much of a wait. The food itself was presented well and tasted wonderful. I had the chirashi zushi lunch special which was probably the best set on the menu. My date had the yakiniku beef set which wasn't too bad either. We both thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it was surprisingly how inexpensive it was, less than 25$ pp for lunch. Make sure you book before you come as it's always full. I will definitely be coming back here soon.
Have been multiple times for the omakase. Each time you walk in you are greeted with the traditional Japanese welcoming.
The omakase is a 9 course nigiri, each course has two pieces of nigiri for you to enjoy. It is the most divine sushi in Melbourne, there is so much thought and perfection in each nigiri. You may not notice, but the timing, and type of sushi is all very well thought through. You always start with the lighter nigiri and finish on the more heavier tasting courses. One of my favourite courses is the creamy oyster, which just melts in your mouth.
Service is highly attentive, the waiters/waitress always make sure you have been taken care of. The sushi chef's make sure you your ginger and wasabi is refilled when you are running on low. Service is exceptional and extremely detailed, they always say thank you when you leave.
Would highly recommend and definitely worth the travel.

Excellent Japanese cuisine specialising in sushi/sashimi but also with a nice selection of other dishes. We decided to leave the sushi for another visit when we would have more time to sample the full selection that is served two portions at a time freshly prepared over the course of the sitting.
We started with a dish of gyoza which was unlike any I have had before but was very good. It had a crisp crust and a textured filling with nice flavours. I then tried the miso grilled sea bass as a main which was as fresh as you could get anywhere and cooked to perfection. Afterward a richly flavoured desert of green tea creme brûlée finished a satisfying meal.
I will definitely be back. The food was beautifully presented and the service friendly and professional. The quality of the food justified the expense which was a little on the high side.

Went here for my birthday last November and had the omakase at the sushi bar. Authentic as you can get and with friendly and professional staff. Good choice of plum wines and whiskey. Snapper nigiri with salt and lemon is the best thing I have ever eaten.

Omakase dinner review.
Came here for a celebratory dinner and was not disappointed. The omakase special is a 9 course sushi dining experience for $90 per person. You are seated at the bar where you can watch the sushi masters make every piece fresh for you. Each sushi course gives you 2 pieces per person. The sushi master will put the pieces on a small plate Infront of you and tell you when he recommends it to be dipped in soya sauce or not.
On our night we were served the following:
1. King dory
2. Pink Seared salmon
3. Marinated salmon wrapped in seaweed
4. Grilled beef
5. Shell fish
6. Seared tuna
7. Seared ocean trout
8. Marinated king fish
9. Grilled oyster.
Each sushi was perfectly seasoned. We could not fault any of the ones that were served to us. The grilled beef was so tender that our teeth went through it like butter. All the fish was fresh and beautifully prepared. The oyster for the oyster sushi were grilled in its shell and then transferred onto the rice bed. Hands down the best sushi we have ever had!
And no... we were not hungry after eating 18 pieces of sushi each.
Top tip - the pink ginger is considered a palate cleanser so have a small piece between each sushi course.

😍😩 The Chirashi Zushi don special comes with chawanmushi, miso and refreshing sides! The chawanmushi was like a silk pillow and complete melted in my mouth.
The Don comes with a variety of sushi and Eel! As you can tell from the picture, their servings are extremely generous for it's price! The sashimi was amazingly fresh, the eel was delicious and the tamago complimented the dish well. The rice below it is sushi rice which was seasoned very well.
TDLR: Definitely worth the price and is the freshest sashimi I have had in Melbourne. If you aren't a fan of sashimi, they have simpler dishes such as soba noodles which were also amazing. 10000% recommend Shira Nui if you're around GW. Hope to try the Omakase one day!!!
Went there for their famous omekase!!! Gotta remember that you need to booking they only accept 12 people - 14 people on each session. $90 per head you will got 6 with couple complimentary. Taste wise, still really good, the chef will told you which one need to eat with soy sauce and which one don’t. But for myself I don’t put any soy sauce at all. As I want to taste all the ingredient. If you don’t get the omekase session, you still can dinning and order one or two from the omekase selection.
I went to try out this place purely on the great reviews. No booking but was seated Immediately. Great service with knowledgeable staff. I was wanting sushi and the sushi definitely a highlight. Along with the well cooked meat this place was of a high standard
Recently came here for both dinner and lunch and i would highly recommend coming here for their lunch specials. For under $25, you get a super filling and fresh lunch set! You will need to make sure to book in advance as they often get busy.
For dinner however was quite expensive for what it was. We had a table of 4 girls and ordered about $140 but was still left hungry and reluctant to order more due to the high prices. The nigiri sushi were very good but the karage chicken, eel sushi and miso eggplant were quite mediocre.
Overall, definitely recommend going for the sushi/sashimi options!
It’s Tuesday night and it’s getting busy around 7. Lucky we get in early right after 6 to have a counter seat for 2. All food are amazing! Can’t wait to come back and try the other food from the menu!
Food and service both very good. The restaurant is very busy so suggest booking ahead if you’re going to come Thursday - Sunday. Sit at the counter if you can so you can watch the sushi magicians weave their magic. Only reason I didn’t score a 5 was due to price, it’s pretty costly so if on a tighter budget suggest going elsewhere.

Probably one of my favourite sushi restaurants in Melbourne, and they are killing the game right now! The nigiris are so fresh and the quality is reasonably high, especially the salmon. Everything else was done efficiently and at a reasonable time. Don't let that small plate fool you, it'll make you full pretty quickly.

Shira Nui is definitely a favourite Japanese go-to for me! The quality is superb yet the price tag is so affordable! I highly recommend the omakase (book beforehand). The food quality is consistent and service is exceptional. While it’s not part of the omakase, I always order a chawanmushi (steamed egg) on top. The broth and flavours are aromatic and rich, perhaps to the point it seems ridiculous for a supposedly humble and simple egg dish. One of the best I’ve had in Melbourne! If it’s not obvious... Repeat customer/fan over here.
Amazing food and amazing service for the price of quality sushi. Always happy after eating at this restaurant! Just make sure you book in advance and come on time, they are quite busy and might need the table for another booking. Overall would come back time and time again for my sushi cravings 😋

Probably my best Japanese experience in Melbourne so far. From the friendly service to the amazing food. Get the Omakase at the bar, rare beef, oyster, marinated kingfish and salmon with seaweed is a must try.
Best sushi in Melbourne. Need les to say more. Sit back and enjoy the omakase. If you havent had the opportunity to sit at the counter, do so. On about your 5,6th visit the true identity of Shiranui comes out. The grumpy man behind the counter doesnt like customers, but know how to make awesome and divine sushi. Typical for great sushi chefs keep pride of food.
We came here for the omakasi a couple of months back and we were blown away by the quality of the fish. Every dish was of supreme taste and the sushi chefs worked tirelessly while it was clear they enjoyed their profession. Will be back.
Definitely make a booking for lunch! These guys are pretty popular with the locals and for good reason. The lunch menus are great value whereas I find the dinner menu a bit overpriced. Desipte our service being a bit inattentive, the quick and delicious food serivce outweighed this.

We ate the sushi and sashimi moriawase, which was enough to share between 2-3 people, and each had chawan mushi! The chawan mushi is probably the main reason I'd come back, the taste just feels like home combined with the ambience and friendly staff!

The lunch menu is great value and always has you leaving with your eyes, taste buds and stomach satisfied. Everything is presented beautifully and tastes as good as it looks. My personal favourite is the sashimi special($22) and I always enjoy the chawan mushi as its very silky but packed with flavour. The sashimi is fresh and delicious and the salad which accompanies it compliments it very well.
The staff are always polite and friendly. Decor isn't fancy as such but has a Japanese feel to it and I love sitting at the bench for a truely authentic experience.

We always have a great time at Shira Nui. They are solid authentic, very good quality Japanese food in Melbourne. The service is always attentive and friendly. This place may not be as flashy and funky like those insta-worthy restaurant but the food quality really worth what you are paying for.
Japanese authentic cuisine. The menu is streamlined. Friendly and polite staff. Fresh sushi, light, crispy tempura. Good size portion. Try the plum wine tasting with three flavours: green tea, plum and brown sugar. Very nice. Matcha cream burlee was so creamy, went very well with ice cream and caramelised fruit. A satisfying way to finish the meal.

*Grilled King Fish Head - takes a bit longer than usual, but the fish comes out incredibly juicy with beautifully crispy skin. The fish itself has a wonderful flavour, really well worth the wait.
*Chirashi Zushi Lunch Special - loads of high quality fish cut at a really nice thickness, allowing it to have great texture. I love the full set with mini spaghetti, chawan mushi (silky smooth), and miso soup.
*Katsudon - really comforting dish with sweet soy and egg. One of the best and authentic Japanese restaurants in Melbourne.
Katsudon.. best ive tried in the world. Hmm...All foods of high quality. Decor dated and tables can be hard to get but the food is always amazing!
Great price for authentic, delicious Japanese food and lovely service ❤ Love how the music is nice and gentle in the background. This seems like a really good place for a good catch-up and they do have an alright wine list, including plum wine tasting 👌
We ordered the sushi and sashimi platter (which was HUGE!), agedashi, yose nabe udon and the tempura. I love how the fish is fresh (does not have fishy aftertaste) and how generous they are with their ginger. I think we asked for more than five plates of ginger...I just love the soy + ginger combination too much 😂 Next time you want to try some good Jap food, book a table here. Won't disappoint :)
Very fresh sashimi, great little place for friends catch ups. Everything was good but eggplant with miso was a touch too salty. Regardless, I'd still highly recommend this place. (Make sure you book ahead as it's a small restaurant)
Been here 2 weeks in a row for lunch and probably will go again this week. Absolutely fabulous japanese food, a rarity in Melbourne, let alone in Glen Waverley! I live 30minutes away but would drive here for lunch, it is that good.
