We have been coming here for many years for the no frills yum cha items. This place has seriously cheap but good food. The service is never stellar but in terms of value for money, it cannot be beaten.
Today, we had a number of items to takeaway. The custard tart was probably one of the best I have had in Melbourne and at less than $2 a piece, the price added to its deliciousness. The pastry was flaky and crispy while the custard was sweet and of a perfect consistency. The sticky rice was not gluggy and had a lovely combination of dried shrimp, Chinese sausage and spring onions. The other usual suspects were also very tasty and cheap - chicken pie, glutinous rice puff and radish cake.
We also purchased a couple of boxes of their stuffed bean curd skin rolls - these are amaze balls when eaten with rice or noodles.
The interior of the restaurant was a bit drab but it just added to the quaint yet satisfying experience!
Want some great yum cha with reasonable price? Try this place and you will comeback despite running out of money or not 😂. We called 5 dishes and they are all really nice. Definitely comeback for more.
What I recommend: Prawn Dumpling (full of filling with freshly smell), Chicken Feet (good seasoning and tender), BBQ pork bun (really nice dough with tasty filling) and sticky in lotus leaf (well balance between stickiness and dryness, strong lotus scent and great flavoured)
What I think you maybe consider: The pork bone in black bean sauce (which is good for me but can be salty for some people)
What I’m not impressed: The prawn rice paper roll (taste fine, but the prawn flavour is not strong/fresh enough)
What I extraordinarily like: the soy and chilli sauce (extremely flavoursome!!), and the available frozen yum cha that you can bring home.
A great place for Yum Cha!
pretty legit dim sum they have there!I'm from HK and their dim sum got that Hkie flavour in them!
I would go there every weekend for their food!!
A decent place for yum cha! We had the congee (porridge), siew mai and you tiao. The you tiao (fried dough stick) goes well dipped in the congee (my favourite combination), although we found the congee quite bland. The siew mai was nice though and it has prawns inside!
Good selection of dim sum at reasonable prices. You have to self serve for tea, cups, bowls, sauces and utensils. Service can be quite slow and you’re often ignored more than noticed until you flag the staff. A lot of people get takeaways than eat in. Favourites are the egg tarts and char siew sows. Wide selection of frozen dim sums and paus for sale too.
Small and mainly frequented by the Asian community I see. Immensely enjoyed our steamed dumplings (prawn; scallop; crab and prawn; and pork ribs in black bean sauce). They also sell containers of frozen dumplings etc (full freezer on display) which we bought some of to steam at home. Will be back!!!!
My wife and I were pleasantly surprised by the quality and genuinity of food in this little, super-busy place. In spite of its size, this tiny restaurant is well organised and it does not take long to be served.
All the food is made on the premises (the kitchen being bigger than the dining room). Our yum cha was one of the best we had in Melbourne. We will certainly go back.
A definite five for the very nice home made food. A top yum cha, which is difficult to find today in Melbourne. The place is unbelievably busy and does not take reservation for lunch: one understands why when arriving there. The parking space is adequate. We will certainly return either for lunch or dinner.
Love this place , it’s really dingy inside but the food is really authentic and it’s open til late so you can have dim sum for dinner too! They also cook seafood dishes as well as clay pots and sautéed vegetables . My favourite part of this place is the frozen dim sum area where you can purchase your faves and take it home , my fave is the chicken with sticky rice
Humble and familiar are the words I would use to describe Hong Kong Dim Sum. Upon entering, you’ll find that the place is quite old and a bit worn down but this shouldn’t deter you from eating their fresh selection of yummy dim sum. Their food is quite limited, so if you’re after variety, this place might fall short on that. Otherwise, the dim sum is delicious and comforting. I always order the Pork Siu Mai, prawn dumplings, bean curd pork roll and curry puffs. The dim sum here is of great quality and is always consistent. One of my favourites is their curry puff- the pastry crumbles as you bite into it whilst the filling is smooth and tasty.
Although I’ve never tried it, you also have an option of purchasing some of their frozen dumplings, which seem pretty popular with the customers. Overall, this is a not so fussy casual restaurant with fantastic food, never disappoints me.
Came here as a big group of 10, we ordered so much food we had to be rolled out of the restaurant. A friend ordered all the dishes for us from our usual sweet and sour pork to a delicious steamed fish with ginger/soy, seafood hotpot, steamed broccoli with oyster sauce. I liked how we could purchase our favourite yum cha dishes frozen to enjoy at home. Will be back to try all the other dishes!
Cheap and authentic hk dim sum food. Not exactly the cleanest place. Dine in or take away the frozen dim sum.
The fried combination dumpling is large with a generous amount of stuffing.
Egg tart is well glazed with multiple laters of pastry.
The cheong fan and har gao is decent with large prawns.
Sui mai is kind of plain lacking taste.
Good value for money.
Definitely one of the best place to have breakfast or brunch, specially when you want a taste of nice and not pricy dim sums. It’s not the best dim sum I must say, but comparing the quality and price, it’s a great place to visit.
getting a bit pricey lately but still arguably the best ++ most traditional place for dim sum in melbourne. the chong fun, chive dumplings, lotus leaf sticky rice, congee, red bean sesame balls and egg tarts (my mumma swears these are better than any of the ones in the cbd) are all MUST try!! a bit dirty with self serve cutlery and an unlimited supply of free, piping hot chinese tea, it’s as authentic as it comes.
If you are looking for cheap yet quality authentic/traditional chinese dim sum, here is where you should be! Been here for a few times, it never disappoints me. Although the interior is quite shabby, the food is amazing and freshly served/steamed upon your order.
Must try their char siu bbq pork puff, so so so flaky outside and flavourful. Two of us ordered 6 items, it was only $27!
Store opening till 2am for dinner menu, but dim sum serving till 6pm only.
The food is tasty, flavoursome and good quality for its price. It is cooked and served pretty quickly and seems authentic. Food recommendations are the mud crab and scallops. Serving sizes are generous and
I'd say service is average and the waiters and waitresses are polite. The restaurant is relatively small and usually quite busy. It may be loud and cramped at meal times and sometimes it might be hard to find a seat.
I'd recommend this as a quick Yum Cha place for anyone who'd like to eat some Hong Kong style food.
I've been here quite a few times as a casual dining location for a quick bite. Popular for its yum cha, their lunch meals are perfectly created and is delicious but can be a hit and miss based on streaming (and over steaming as this would cause a loss of it's texture). I've tried their frozen yum cha and each variety are traditionally made for the home's steamer/steam oven. Their dinner menu has a variety of Cantonese, all well cooked and delivered sizzling hot. Their ambiance is very casual; it can feel cramp and noisy during lunch sessions but seem fine during dinner sessions as they close frozen food sales at this time.
Food: 🌟🌟🌟.5
This is a cheaper yumcha option in the heart of Glen Waverley. We ordered a variety of dim sims to share and were happy with the flavours of the freshly steamed options and the authenticity of the dishes served.
Service: 🌟🌟🌟
The interior is reminiscent of the local cafes in Hong Kong and the service what you would expect in this type of establishment. However we were pleased with how quickly the food was served and the range of options available to take away.
Priced: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Fairly well priced for the quality of the meals served. We would come here quite regularly for a quick yumcha experience.
(🌟🌟🌟.5 overall)
Been there for both dim sums and late night meals (had fried wontons, spring rolls, special combination fried rice and fried Singapore noodles). Both were so wholesome tasting and not overly salted with noticeable amount of MSG. Quite generous use of ingredients too that doesn’t make you feel like they’re being stingy to make up the cheap pricing. Absolutely loved the rice porridge and shrimp dumplings too. This is some OG Chinese goodness that would truly warm up your body and soul when you crave it :)
generously sized dim sum. well made and delicious and very tasty. always packed.
hard to get a seat. in fact would really love to see them improve on their seating which i find too cramped and hard to move around.
One of my favourite places when visiting Glen Waverley. Their dim sums are cooked fresh to order and you can also purchase some to take home to cook yourself.
I always go for their congee as well as their white sugar cake. Very reasonably priced. Their takeaway precooked dim sum dishes are also good.
Definitely more on the basic side in terms of self service Chinese tea and filling in an order form to order before you get your dishes but well worth a visit for those who loves dim sum.
The food during the day is cheap and pretty good and the staff are all lovely. In the evening the food offering is a lot more serious. I get noodles here multiple times a week as good and reasonably priced. But for something more serious the Boss and head chef certainly knows how to cook great seafood! The crab, oysters and scallops are very good in particular the crab. And at 1am even better! 😊😬🙌🏻🦀🦀
if you don't like making reservations and prefer early yum cha in Melbourne ( 9am start compared to 11am everywhere else ) then I definitely recommend this little cafe/not restaurant. Service is well standard being Chinese but food is definitely good the dim sum's put most of the yum cha restaurants to shame in Melbourne ( I have been to plenty and yes that's only my opinion )
prices are fair. Food not the freshest but beggars can't be choosers sometimes. I would go back simply because this....9am,cheap,tasty, no reservation
Had the usual steamed yum-cha stuff (Siu Mai, Har Gow, chives and crab meat dumplings, bbq pork buns, sticky rice and pork century egg congee). Simple yun-cha menu, none of the fancy stuff but the dishes we ordered were very tasty. I would give it a 4 for food.
No table service as you have to order at counter and grab your own cutlery. That's not such a big deal, just keep that in mind.
My main issue was the location of our table. We sat right next to some boxes and the wall and mirror were off-putting as they needed some cleaning. But looking around it was the worst table they had.
Other than that, if you want to kill your craving for some inexpensive and "standard" yum-cha, then this is worthwhile checking out.
Went for some dimsum with a group of friends :-) The food there had a pretty generous portion and we were satisfied with the pricing $12 per person. Food was pretty good despite it being slightly oily (it’s fried afterall). Really enjoyed it!
Especially liked the fried youtiao wrapped with chee cheong fun!
There were only a few seats so it wouldn’t really be convenient for a huge group. Despite that, the 8 of us still managed to sit at adjacent tables.
Edit: service wasn’t that great, had to go up to the counters to grab a menu and ask how we could order
I usually come here for supper and to satisfy my late night cravings for dim sum. Their food is pretty good and decently priced. Would love to come here again some time soon.
I love this place because it's really reasonably priced. It's not the most fancy yum cha place and weekend mornings always has a line, but the food is really good! I always get the basics sui mai, har gow, chicken feet or spare ribs but my favourite dish there is cheong fun with fried donut.... yum!
Came here for crab noodle with 2 friends. The mud crab was very cheap; at only $21 a pound. Although it was cheap, the flavour of the sauce had too much of a ginger flavour which was overwhelming. We also got pipies in xo chilli with Chinese doughnut which tasted amazing and had no sandy bits in it.
Great for a quick cheap yum cha if you're not looking for anything too fancy. Or if you're into congee their pork and century egg congee is the best I've had in Melbourne.
Came for dimsum lunch, it was alright but not too spectacular. Service was a little off, waitresses were busy chatting at the cashier when I came up. Some food was good, but not spectacular. Enjoyed the tofu skin rolls, porridge and some of the rice paper dumplings (cheong fan). Price also not too expensive.
Cheap, quick no-frills dim sum during the day. Not an ideal place to go to if you're wanting a fancy yum cha experience or if you're new to the cuisine and would like to see what's on offer before you order. If, however, you have a craving for some prawn dumplings of pork sui mai, this is the place to be! The decor leaves something to be desired and you may have to wait for a table but the turnaround is relatively quick.
Don't be discouraged if you can't read the Chinese menu signs plastered on the walls, the dim sum menu is available in English and the staff are friendly. Just grab a form and a pencil from the register, choose the quantities of your selected items and you'll be eating in less than 10 minutes.
If you really enjoy it, you can purchase from a large range of frozen take-home packs.
If you are a fan of yum cha! Go to Hong Kong Dim Sum for authentic sim sum, bring them home frozen and heat them up 15mins ready to eat with restaurant quality.
When you walk in you definitely get the Hong Kongnese feeling haha The restaurant is your modern Chinese restaurant, quick service, friendly staff - My partner has been here on numerous occasions and he told me we had to get the xo pipis with Chinese doughnuts, so we did! Smaller portion but the sauce was seasoned so well, I couldn't get enough of it. We also got the custard buns (fav), nicely flavoured and not too sweet and not that fake custard taste you get in other custard buns.
There have two owners operate in morning and evening session. The prawn & pork siew mai and har kao is my all time favourite when I am carvings for dim sum at night . The highlight of this restro is their pipi w XO sauce & Chinese donut, crabs w noodle base (Singaporean style ). Definitely coming back to try out the congee w crab 🦀 .
I'd visited Hong Kong Dim Sum many times during my uni days to pick up some of the hot dim sum behind the counter, and had even been for yum cha once or twice. From what I've gathered about the dim sum, the frozen and refrigerated stuff is good for buying and steaming at home. The eat-in yum cha menu contains limited choice compared to the full scale restaurants, so it's better to come here for more of a light yum cha meal. The hot dim sum behind the glass counter is only worth eating when fresh in the early morning.
They also do proper Chinese dishes at dinner time, and set up the shop like a restaurant. So it's bit of a jack-of-all-trades establishment. I went for a late dinner there recently after hearing good things about the food for some time. We were scrounging for somewhere good to eat that was open at 9.30pm on a Sunday, and I was ecstatic to find that HKDS were open until 1am. I thoroughly enjoyed most of what we had, especially the sweet n' sour pork. They had used tender pork ribs, used just the right amount of batter thickness, and had gotten the flavour down really well. The tung chai veggie was some nice green spinach-like veggie, bathing in some tasty preserved beancurd sauce. The pipis with Chinese donut were yummy, though the sauce needed a bit of a stronger flavour. Only the crispy duck with taro let things down. The amount of duck to be found underneath the excessive deep fried yam was not worth the money payed. The duck was nicely crispy, but to the point of being very dry. This combination of sparse dry meat underneath an overkill of deep fried yam left a disappointing and less than wholesome taste in the mouth.
There's definitely some quality and more unique food available here for dinner (and supper) so I will be back.
Delicious, tightly wrapped dumplings. Plenty of choice and excellent value. I tried congee for the first time here and enjoyed it muchly. Make the trip or pop in before a movie
Hubby and I ordered xo sauce pipi with chinese donut and crab with noodle base, meals came with complementary soup like all other catonese restaurant, price is fair, service is reasonable, have to come back.and try their dim sims next time.
Frequently here for breakfast, this is a place to me if you are an early bird. This is in part in around Kingsway/Glen Waverley, few or none of the Chinese eateries are open for breakfast. Another reason to come early is because parking is often a pain in Kingsway.
This place is pretty much a no fuss eatery. You queue up to place your order, get your own utensils and tea, find a spot and you are pretty much ready to finish the last bit of the process, i.e. to eat. Price-wise, it is a tad lower than your full service yumcha places littered around the southeastern suburbs here in Melbourne.
Generally, we go for the tried and tested. So, we will find ourselves digging into among others, the chicken feet, bean skin pork, spare ribs, the charsiew bai, siew mai, spring roll, lotus leaf glutinous rice and the occasional porridge. There are occasions where we ventured out of our comfort zones but we did find the other dishes delectable or suit our taste buds.
This place will get crowded after 9.30am, so be prepared to wait for a table.
And if your appetite for the dim sum is not diminished after your hearty meal, you can also head to the freezer corner and grab some of those that you have enjoyed and savour them at home. We have tried this a few times and the experience is mix. For some of the dishes, it tasted alright when eaten at home but for the others, it just doesn't feel right.
If you are around the vicinity, it is recommended that you come and experience the food for yourselves. I think it will be worth it. It serves, in my opinion, authentic HK dim sum, minus the rude staff and the rowdiness of the place you typically experience in similar joints in Hong Kong.
You very rarely put good and cheap in the same sentence with food but I guess this is one of them. Good quality Dim sum at a cheap price. It can be crowded and busy but it is also a store that sells direct to public in take away and heat at home packs. Quite a good variety of food but if you can be bothered to bring it home to steam do so. Staff do not really care a lot and even though they ran out of chilli the care factor was zero. Felt sorry for the two elderly couples that complained to no avail. Must give it a try as their shark fin dumpling and siu mai rate quite high in my books. Their congee is also very acceptable and popular. People that arrive late afternoon might find it a bit watered down. Would come again on a sleepy weekday.
If you are after basic yum cha fix, without the hassle of pre-booking and don't mind pre-paid and order your dim sum at the counter then this is the place to go.
Other everyday go-to yum cha restaurants charge you much higher price for similar quality of food. And unless you go to those fancy Chinese restaurants otherwise there aren't much different between Hong Kong Dim Sum and others, beside there are no table cloth here, and you have to get your own tea and gather your bowls, cutleries from the counter.
So now comes the food; I have tried all of their dim sum, most of the times they are good, but sometime not so good it's depend on the chef on the day I think. So it is lack of consistency, and no quality control whatsoever. One thing that I will stay clear of would be the prawn dumpling in soup, I have tried it few times and don't like it the filling don't taste fresh.
I rarely dine in here, but the dim sum take away is awesome! You wouldn't normally expect frozen dim sum to taste so good, but they do dim sum really well and it's really fresh. You can see its popularity as take away frozen packets & pastries sell out pretty quickly. I love their siu mai with scallops that isn't quite traditional and the egg tarts have really flaky pastry. The Chinese sugar donuts are nice too.
Authentic hong kong dim sum. Glutinous rice very good. Also chive and prawn dumpling is a winner. Take away bao is also worth buying. Cosy warm much cleaner than years ago
This is usual dim sum spot because its cheap and cheerful and not too far from home. I have had been here many times over the years and generally their dim sum is great. After going there this morning the experience was ruined a bit because our load of dim sum was under cooked and not hot enough. Its usually jam packed on the weekends.
The Internet and WI- FI went out AGAIN at RMIT????So of of course I could not be fucked waiting and waiting for it to go back on. RMIT said that by 3pm it will be back. What did I do? I went out for lunch in Glen Waverley and a bit of exploring. Here Glen Waverley is an Asian student's favourite cheap suburb. It is far from uni but it has all the cheap Asian food which is know to be great for foodie students like myself.
Dim sum means ‘touch your heart’ and the food you find here may well do just that.
But...don't feel like eating out? HK Dim Sum offers restaurant quality frozen take away yum cha. Just steam them at home on some baking paper and in minutes you'll see why this tiny, yet bustling, eatery does such good business. Open till 2am!!!
The price is a bit cheaper than eating out and it's fun to DYI every once in a while. (You can also eat in of course).
Have been revisiting my old haunts lately and HK Dim Sum was definitely on the list. Came here for dinner and wasn't disappointed. The food are still consistent but so is the lack of service. In their defence, it's hard to get anyone's attention when there's only two persons on duty. But when you do manage to flag someone down, get your order and whatever requests in quick and it's all straightforward tasty food from there onwards. Typical Asian efficiency at its best. The fried pork chitterlings is one of the best in Melbourne; crispy on the outside and chewy inside. The lamb hotpot is a big bowl of delicious soupy tender lamb with bamboo shoots, red dates, water chestnut, garlic and veggies - perfect for the cold days ahead. The crab is pretty affordable but the sauce is a bit under-flavoured. The dim sums are available until 8pm so if you get cravings for them for dinner, you know where to go. Due to its size, the place fills up really quickly during lunch and dinner time but do not let this deter you. Great affordable food with minimal fuss.
This is a really dingy looking Chinese restaurant and looks like its nothing much, but the food here is consistently good, and is very authentic. I like taking away egg tarts from here, and I've also come here on several occasions for dinner. This is my preferred place for Chinese food in the Glen Waverley area. It's less salty and greasy than every other place I've been to, and the ingredients tend to be better in quality.
Authentic and nice dim sum. They have a basic selection and do it really well, unlike some of their big restaurant counterparts where they have variety but fail to even get basics right. Tight seating so get in early.
our typical place if we want to eat dim sum, we love their glutinous rice dumpling filled with mince meat, but this could be hit and miss as a few times we got it, the glutinous dumpling still raw on the inside.
the phoenix feet was okay, but i rather avoid their ribs in black bean, it was mostly fat and cartilage, no meat.
The waiting for a table wasn't fun, but the food is cheap and quite nice. The combination porridge was interesting and flavourful. Service is nonexistent but it's admirable with the type of cliental they have to deal with
Great dim sims for very cheap price and steamed on order, much better than those overprice dim sims filled with MSG from the CBD, it is also a good place to go for late night super however, the staff can be quite rude sometimes and the service definitely needs improvement, would recommend.
Good tiny shop wiz many fridges inside and first time sort of surprised me when I walked in. There sell take away frozen dim sims and u can order in shop and stream for u at the moment. However the quality isn't very reasonable for dim sims honestly, in general, intermediate upper Hong Kong yum cha restaurant for Saturday night!
Hong Kong Dim Sum BOX HILL - the freshest and best yum cha to date!. Fresh ingredients, plump prawns, perfectly steamed dumplings and all reasonably priced. You won't get yum cha restaurant service or atmosphere here, just the delicious dumplings in all their glory. Very swift service with free Chinese tea. You can also buy their frozen dim sum to take home.
The decor is not flash but as long as the food didn't disappoint, that is what mattered. The majority of main dishes were $12-$18. Our most expensive dish we ordered was the pippis ($22). The selection of dishes on offer were quite varied and they stuck to mainly traditional Cantonese combinations. Most restaurants would charge more than $20 for a standard main dish of equal portions. We ended up paying $25 per person between 8 people. We were happy with the execution of their dishes and would happily return.
Like. Service is friendly, food is really good, the food took a little while to come out but the quality of the food just absolutely made the wait obsolete and it was so fresh and tasty, definitely coming back here
Friday Nights. Me and the hubby started going to Glen Waverly every Friday night since we just love the vibe there and checked this place two weeks ago and fell in love again. Went the next Friday night and the love grew more. Its a nice place. The food is simply presented and warms your heart. Thank you Hong Kong Dim Sum for the lovely food and kind service.
Who would have thought?. This place is a hidden gem in Glen Waverley. I never thought I would try this place until my workmates took me. I was so surprised at how authentic it tasted. Considering there's china bar and all the other malaysian/chinese places in Glen Waverley. You definately get what you pay for at this place. The quality of the food and the pricing is very good if you get take away. It is a little expensive if you do eat in but either way if you like your real tasting chinese food this place if gold! Always tastes fresh :)
Love the dumplings here. Best in South Eastern Suburbs. Favorite is the prawn and pork. Great Value.
Great value. One of the cheapest dimsum places I've been. Although there aren't many choices compared to other dim sum places, but the price is cheaper. It's definitely worth a try!
Best dumplings this side of town! Not the most attractive place but always busy and with good reason!
