Review Spicy Fish Restaurant - Glen Waverley

Matt
Dunno where the rest of the crab went - it was huge when they showed us, with a price to match, but all I could find on the plate was noodles! They didn't bring all the meals out even remotely near the same time - we're talking 15 minutes between meals for different people at the same table, and the restaurant was only about a third full. This used to be a good place to eat.

No fresh chilli anywhere to be seen! not in a dish, not in a bowl, not anywhere! Even when we asked for it! (Spicy Fish?!). The dishes were poorly prepared - for example - a dish using dried preserved mushrooms was served without adequately soaking them, so they were still quite dry when served. The pictures in the menu look amazing. Its a shame what you get served looks nothing like them.

Best mate birthday treat here, n end up paying $350 for 4 dishes plus 6 cup of mixed drink. What the repoff, grady ownership for cheating cudtomet. Totally destroyed good image of Chinese. Foods wad shifty cooked n services. Watching ur pocket before order or u will end up paying surprised amount.

Recommended to me and I recommend it for spicy food. Not only fish.

On Sunday I visited Spicy Fish - this place I have been visiting for years but I haven't dined here for a while. It's probably not as good as what I remembered it to be... I've hyped it up so much!

Still the best thing to order there are the chilli wontons. They are spicer than other chilli wontons I've tried. I enjoyed the Singapore Noodles but Alex found them to be tasteless.

The waiter was having a bad day... He got everything wrong. He gave Alex the wrong drink, only thought we ordered one plate of chilli wontons when we had ordered two plates... Better luck next time for him 😢

Alex's score was:
Food - 6
Atmosphere - 6
Service - 2

I think the other waitress made up for the mistakes made by her co-worker anyway. It's still a nice place for a cheap meal in my opinion.

The food was great, best fish soup I've ever tried, eggplant dish with scallop was so delicious, everything was perfect. Great dinning experience. @

Extremely disappointing!!!! As a regular customer, my friends and I dine at Spicy Fish every Friday or Saturday, we love the food here, but not tonight. I'm not sure whether they have changed the chef or it was the same chef cooking, the food we ordered tonight we would only rate it 0 star. The spicy chicken is so salty, just like the salt is free for the night, cold dish tofu with century egg was tasteless and the main dish "Fish" was full of muddy flavour and the meat was slimy. It's NOT Fresh!!! We can't even put that fish in our mouth, it's so stink!! This is the last time we dine in this restaurant. Good luck!

Had dinner here with friends which was just ok, the crab with salted egg was good but a bit bland, the chicken in mala was good and spicy, dumpling in chilli oil was ok, bean with mince was goooood, xiaolongbao was juicy and yummy, but the tea tree mushroom had this weird smell that my friend said was fish paste or something, i didnt like it.
Overall was good, could've been better but for $160 was a bit pricy. The service tho, was immaculate, he let us stay and enjoyed our food passed the closing time, good service worth tips ;)

I personally like this place! If you get their signature dish (Spicy Fish) then you will not be disappointed! It is a massive bowl (easily enough for 2 people who eat a lot) filled with delicious fish soaked in different types of szechuan chilli and spices. It is delicious!

Good things come in little packages. This is certainly true for 'Spicy Fish'. Ordered several dishes, though I have to say the deep fried salt and pepper bait was the highlight. Crispy, perfectly seasoned with salt, garlic and chilli flakes it was a delight to eat.

Came here, had the chilli dumplings (which were amazing) but everything else a bit average. My main issue is its too pricey. Was over $80 for two ppl!

Must get the spicy fish. Lunch menu is great with dishes all around $10. Great food, great service and doesn't get too busy. Spicy chicken is also good but have noticed quantity to have decreased over the years.

17th July 2016

My opinion of this place has dropped after a disappointing experience at Spicy Fish today. The spicy fish dish is still enjoyable and they still have some pretty cheap lunch deals.

However, my friend ordered a fried fish and there was barely any fish there - it was basically 90% batter with bits of fish, which was extremely disappointing and very stingy and deceptive compared to what the menu offered. In addition, service was clumsy and slow - the waitress forgot to give all of us the rice we ordered. Even after one of us asked for rice it wasn't enough of a prompt - every single person who ordered rice had to individually ask the waitress for their bowl of rice. No acknowledgement of error or apologies from their part.

As much as I like some of their dishes, it seems spicy fish is now added to the list of places in Glen Waverley where we will only go if we can't find space in other restaurants.

-----------------------------

13th March 2016

Came here for the first time on a Sunday afternoon with a group of 9 and was pleasantly surprised with this small Shanghai/Sichuan restaurant. Lunch prices were very cheap - can have a meal for under $10. Food was flavorful and decent quality, my favorite was the spicy fish - I mean you can't go wrong with the dish the restaurant is named after right? We also got the ox tripe entree and the double cooked spicy pork. Service was acceptable, waitress did her job but there was nothing spectacular about it. Overall we walked out feeling satisfied and would definitely be back to try the rest of their lunch menu, rather than go to Dainty (which is triple the price with only slightly better quality) if in the Glen Waverley area!
Hello. Imnikki
Despite other restaurants on the Kingsway strip being filled to the brim, we managed to grab a table for 4 during peak dinner hours on a Saturday night within minutes of walking in. I have been to their CBD branch and was not overly impressed so I was a bit sceptical. Sad to say my feelings remain unchanged. The stewed pork trotters was too dry and the shredded eel was drowned in oil and very salty. The beancurd with preserved egg and duck roll with salted egg was bordering on bland. The shredded potato with vinegar was alright. Saving grace was the steamed murray cod; steamed just right resulting in a soft and tender flesh. Meh would be the general consensus here.

The spicy wonton entree is perfectly delightful. I could've eaten the whole plate of 12 for myself and then some more. The Singapore Noodles where really tasty. I don't usually go for the Noodles but I'm glad I did this time. They went beautifully with the honey prawns, which were whole prawns (no head) lightly fried in a fluffy but crunchy batter with real honey drizzled over the top, and warmed through by the heat of the prawns. Would go again, but this time I would be prepared to eat a whole lot more Spicy Wantons.

Visited this place while on a tour of Melbourne based on recommendations from my cousin. We were not disappointed. The place was almost full but the waiter found us a table. He was very welcoming and hospitable. Service was prompt. Our drinks were out quite quickly. We had the 'house special' which was Fish in a spicy schezwan sauce which was amazing. The wontons were also spot on. The prices are a bit on the higher side but then again I haven't had these dishes in any other restaurant.

Nothing like a delicious, quick cheap eat!! You can't go past the chilli oil wontons!!! Today we shared the wontons and each had a seafood noodle soup.. It was too much for me to eat!!! Highly recommended, complimentary tea is also a nice touch (as it should be!)

Pretty decent dine in with no wow factor. We fancy our meat trial and wanted to try crocodile meat. The meat is not as tender as it was in their CBD restaurant. All other dishes were moderate in taste. Our best dish of the night was wanton in chilli oil. Above average pricing.

Visited for dinner with my friend. It's empty for a reason. Overpriced and sub-par food. I think it recently had issues with health code violations. Definitely not a spot you'd want to visit in Kingsway.

Total waste!. The food is totally horrible. Everything is dipping in questionable sauce, with very strong surgar flavor and huge amount of starch just to make dish look nice, without considering healthy eating. The fish we ordered was not fresh at all. You can tell it's been frozen for a very long period of time.
Not to mention service, which is disgraceful! Very noise as well. Never go there again, a total waste of money and a torture of stomach!

Dishes are NOT at all Sichuan style at all and terrible manager. The dining experience is total disaster! The restaurant is Sichuan and Shanghai style cuisine, but this only stops at its Manu and it's name at the door. When the dishes came, it is completely different interma of the look, and the taste is completely off. The price is very high and you would think that they are offering the authentic thing as how much they dare to charge. In short, it is the worst dishes I have tasted. No chilli at in most dishes. It is like go to a Italian restaurant who does not have any tomato sauce. It's so horrible that is so embarrassing to tell people that I gave been wasted time, money and a Friday evening at a place serving horrible cooked food!

There is no service at all! The manager is spraying a shocking chimerical on their wall to try to clean when we walked in. It make the whole room smells so bad! The manager pointed to the ery corner of the Manu when we try to give him feedback on their dish, " pictures are foe reference only". We all know the dishes does not look like the actuall dish, but, if the dish is all black when the dish should be red if it is cooked the right way-the Sichuan way.

All in all, wasted money and a night out at this place. Never go there again!

Poor service and food. The service was awful. We ordered 4 dishes and not one of them looked like the pictures. The most notable absence on all the dishes was fresh chilli - there was literally no fresh chilli on any of the dishes; in a schezuan restaurant? Crazy. When the first dish came out we actually questioned whether it was the dish we ordered and they pointed to the menu In tiny writing 'pictures for reference only'. We asked if they had any fresh chilli - i.e a bowl - nope - only chilli sauce or chilli oil. Not recommended.
Olie And Coco
Hello readers! It has been a while, I apologise- between work, gym, studying and social engagements I have had no time to be inspired, which makes me very sad. Olie and I have however been uploading Instagram photos- don't forget to follow us! (Username: olieandcoco). A place the Olie and I often go to is Spicy Fish- we've been to the China Town restaurent and the Glen Waverely one and they're both equally delicious! The best thing about this place is the Chill Wontons, I mean sometimes we only go there for these delicious steamed, spicy, flavoursome morsels - we savour every bite- mmmmmmmm. Another standard dish is the fried beans which come with mince pork these is also delicious however beware of these black seeds in them!! we still haven't figured out what they are annoyingly we haven't even asked because we're too busy inhaling our food. But beware! They leave such a strong after taste- it's quiet alarming how over powering they are! It seems to be in a few of their dishes (defi

Tasty Szechuan food. If you love hot and spicy this is the place for you!! Food is very tasty and service is usually prompt. Love the spicy wontons and eggplant/pork dish. Only negative I can think of is that the food is very oily (food is covered in chilli oil) as it is Szechuan style, so I keep visits to a minimum for health purposes.

Terrible and Wouldn't Recommend!. Hello readers, just thought i'd put this out there for any customers wanting to eat here again or try out 'Spicy Fish' at The Glen. My family and I we've been a regular customer here and the food is nice. However, no matter how nice the food is, if the service is horrible and they don't follow the health and safety conducts then I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Tonight, we decided to eat dinner here again, however, while enjoying our meal, the manager of the store decided to repaint and polish the furniture that was empty. Many customers including myself was choking on the strong smell of the paint and varnish. I asked for them to come over and asked politely for them to stop until the customers have finished eating before they continue because the smell was way to strong to enjoy any food and i'm pretty sure it's a hazard too. They refused and their excuse was because it's getting late, it's 10pm, the need to start. Excuse me, your sign displays that you close at 10:30pm, and even if you still have customers finishing off their meal at that time, you still need to wait until it is safe to continue your work. Because they refused and it seemed like a laughing matter as they didn't take it seriously, I wouldn't recommend anyone eating here.

Delish!!. We ordered spicy wontons and a pork and mushroom dish with rice and it was fabulous... Especially the wontons yum yum yum!!

Service Please. Very bad service which was a great pity as the food was good. We went for lunch and the waiter was very unhelpful. Obviously good cooks being let down by the waiter! !

Friendly and attentive service. Small, bland dumplings.

THANK YOU! Your service is a thumbs up!!. Eating at Glenny pretty often, arriving pretty late we knew our options were running low - I nearly had a panic attack caused by starvation and the sight of most restaurants starting to close. With a thumbs up the waiter at Spicy Fish invited us in with a warning that the kitchen closes in 5 minutes. Stressed and starving we ordered enough for a family 4 main dishes and 2 serves of dumplings (it was just my partner and I) they happily brought the food out quick smart and hung around patiently as we ate. We packed our masses of left overs in take away containers soon after as we felt bad to make them wait. Still with smiles, close to midnight, the staff waved us goodbye as they cleaned our table. Shredded potato in spring onion is a must try - pleasantly satisfying!! Thanks spicy fish! We will definately be back...not so late next time.

Great food - good service. Went in for dinner with 3 friends - restaurant was fairly full but got a table easily.
Good service and good portions. Food brought out fairly quick and everything was delicious - esp the spicy eggplant and the chillie chicken which had loads of sczhewan flavours and chillie. Yummy chicken fried rice and the Chinese broc with garlic was a hit too. Calamari was a tasty - but a tad oily. Parking is always an issue around Coleman Parade. WIll definitely be back for more chillie. Lol.

Great food though the dinner menu is a little too expensive. Lunch menu and take away lunch boxes are amazing value, though.

Best deep fried icecream I've honestly had! And I've sampled a number around melb. Surprisingly stumbled on this place after going for a hunt around glenny for it. Not sure bout the dishes but icecream is a must try for those who are fans!

Doesn't like it. Used to be one of our favourite eating place, but sadly not anymore. We go there for their Shanghai food e.g. dumpling, noodle etc. But the last time we went there we were so disappointed with the quality and taste of the food. They must have changed chefs!!! We won't go back.
EatToLive
Cheap and cheerful Chinese food with better service at lunch today. Pork spare rib with honey is tasty. Sting bean is also great and of course Spicy fish is a must to try. Well done!

Good little place in glen with nice and spicy food with friendly service. The menu has extensive chicken and pork selection with amazing home made wontons and noodles. Would be back for sure for the great spicy food.

One of my top favourite restaurants in Melbourne. I go there once a week usually and the food is always delicious, and the staff are really nice and polite. Their lunch value menu is really worth the price! And I must say the spicy fish, the eggplant in spicy sauce and the fresh cucumber in garlic are my absolute favourite :) highly recommend this place :)

Food is alright. Service was horrendous, simply bad service the staff intentionally ignore you. Price wise was not value for money when cheaper and better restaurants are next door and across the street.
Aier
Very salty dishes, expensive and little in quantity, definitely will not go back again

It was ordinary..steam rice was dry...prawns were ok, salt n pepper squid had thick batter...I won't be coming back again...

Xiao long bao dumpling are amazing and the white bait and calamari are favourites!

Good value deals. This place has some good value deals for lunch as well as takeaways, especially the $6 takeaway lunch packs.

Not so good!!!. Waited for almost half an hour to get our entrees. Tables around us that arrived later than us were already onto their mains. The waitress told me it was because my 3 duck dumplings take a long time to steam - well there's a first time for everything!!! When they did arrive they were very delicate and tasted different to the dumplings that i am used to - a welcome change. The turnip pastries were also very tasty and crispy without the oil saturation. Our mains took a long time again and the vegetable dish - steamed bok choy and mushroom came out first - we were forced to eat this with the rice prior to our live barramundi in chilli sauce main was served. The vegies lacked any seasoning and they seemed quite bland in a Sichuan setting - although the bok choy was very well cooked and had perfect texture. The whole fish looked good on the plate and had a nice flavour abut it but definitely was lacking in the numbing Sichuan peppercorns and for a dish supposedly in chilli sauce - it was definitely not hot at all. the only saving grace was that the fish was as fresh as it could be having been alive moments before hitting the wok and then our plate. Photos and blog will be up soon.

Never go again. The taste is just OK. But the dishes don't worth the money. The drinks are awful, tasteless. It seems the waiter can not speak either English or Chinese. He just didn't speak at all.
Decentfeed
Wouldn't go again. We ordered the signature dish - Spicy Fish (Barramundi), a cold entree of spicy chicken (口水鸡) and turnip spring rolls. The pictures on the menu are purely for illlustration puposes as on the menu there were 4 turnip spring rolls but on my plate there were only 3. The spicy fish was drowned in a sweet/spicy/savoury sauce. The flavour was OK but I think somebody forgot to scale the fish. The spicy chicken was tender and the sauce spicy and 嘛. We ordered a iced lemon tea and an iced Japanese macha tea. Both were disappointing. The iced Japanese tea was basically green sugary water. Most of the "main" dishes are about $20 which I think is expensive for what you get. The cold entrees are about $9. Service is adequate.

Spice is nice. I love how they have photos of everything in the munu, plus a chilli rating so you know exactly what to expect. Everything was spicy and tasty.
Yummy food, fast service. Will definately return!

Food is getting better here! Love the tomato soup!
Secret_chef
The menu looked really inviting, with gorgeous pictures tingling my taste buds even before knowing what they are. Szechuan dishes are known for the use of chili as a dominant ingredient, excessively in some instances.

Shanghai dumplings had a really nice meaty filling inside and was deliciously soupy - but the skin was thick. It did make is easier to pick them up, and reduced the chance of soup-loss, however its thickness generated much irk. Soft and succulent - and we
