Review Chickilia - Glen Waverley

Thean Sim
Very tasty fried chicken wing. I ordered a medium set for four of us. The bite size of the wing is small so it was not enough for us. Food is good and tasty but small serving size (hence 4 star). Prize is slightly pricey in consideration of the serving size. The place is narrow with limited seat. I went there at a off peak quiet time in a day. Not sure if they can accept phone booking. Will still go back for the great fried chicken.

Great chicken wings and noodles. The chicken were well prepared and well fried. The only downside is the waiting time is a little longer than expected. Generally a great place to eat with a few close friends and families (the store is kinda small, so it would fit a lot of people), they also do delivery with Melbourne Food Delivery, aka Menulog.

I've had a lot of Korean chicken, but this place serves the BEST!! I could happily eat it EVERY DAY. Went there on a busy evening, and even though the staff had all their full tables to take care of, they still served us on time and with the BEST KOREAN CHICKEN so good! I will be back again for more

Cute hidden spots, Friendly staff slow at serving, and we didn't like any of the dishes we ordered. doesn't taste authentic. abit of disappointment.

Probably one of, if not the best hidden gems in Glen Waverley. Pretty hard to find, it's at the back of a convince store but oh my god was it worth the hassle. We ordered takeaway wings because we didn't have much time and even after a 15 minute! drive back home the chicken was still crispy and delicious. It's not your average fried chicken with over the top better which takes away from the meat, but rather the batter is thin but still crispy. Would come again if I even feel like great chicken.

Best friend chicken ever!! Really changed my perspectives about Korean chicken. It's a small family owned restaurant so expect to wait during peak times because they only have two people at the shop. It is definitely worth the wait as it's our favourite little restaurant we keep coming back for.

Extremely disappointed that after being a loyal customer for a long time and always pay extra for more sauce. The uncle just decided he won't allow his wife to sell the extra sauce anymore to me for no reason. What kind of restaurant cannot give out some sauce especially when the customer is willing to pay. I must say goodbye to this place. Lack of customer service knowledge and they just lost their loyal customer for good.

The fried chicken is deliciously made and a consistent, repeat order. The place is small and cozy (20 seats); perfect as an alternative to the noisy bustling nearby Kingsway strip. In terms of customer service, the lady is polite and does her level best even during peak times.

Love the chicken here! The atmosphere is really nice and owned by a lovely couple! Would go back again! One of my favourite places to fried chicken places!!
best soy garlic chicken wings & kim chi soup in town.
Food:3.5, KFC:+0.5, It is very rare I give extra points for a certain type of food, and I am giving it to their Korean Soya Fried Chicken, so juicy and crispy, I think it is even better than the one next door in The Glen Shopping Centre.. Shshhh... The rest of the food is a bit oily but taste good. If I come again, it is definately for the soya fried chicken.

My husband recommended me to try out this restaurant as he claimed that their chicken is way better than Bons or Gami, I thought that was a bold claim. However, after trying their chicken today for dinner, I couldn't agree with him more. The chicken was fried to perfection and was not overly drizzled with sauce like some other places we have tried. The only downside was that they don't offer whole fried chicken with bone, even though it was listed on the menu. Our favourite dishes so far are fried chicken wings with spicy garlic sauce, corn cheese, and tteokbokki with ramen. Definitely will go back again to try to boneless chicken but hopefully, the whole fried chicken will be available as I am a big fan of chicken with bone, as they are usually juicier than boneless.

One of the best Korean fried chicken I have had in my life. This restaraunt located in the back streets or behind a Korean grocer is a goldmine for amazing Korean chicken. Even the side dishes are amazing here and are a must get with your chicken. The pricing here is decent and is great for a medium sized group of fried chicken lovers. Compared to other fried chicken like Gami and Bons, this place is a tier above. The restaraunt itself is quite small and gives a more cosy home feel when eating and also doesn't allow for alcoholic beverages making it a more peaceful and tamed environment to eat at. The staff here are super polite and helpful and have some of the best customer service skills I have experienced. This place is a must try for anyone, 11/10 would and have recommend to everyone who's looking for amazing Korean fried chicken.

Definitely a no frills dining experience, however, I don't mind as long as the food speaks for itself!

We got the chicken wings and kimchi pancake; both of which was delicious. I definitely prefer the spicy garlic sauce over the non-spicy version, but will have to come back for the boneless chicken as well, I don't think we got enough last time and at these prices why wouldn't you try everything?

Plus, it's a bit of an adventure finding the place.

Who doesn't love fried chicken? These are fried to perfection and a lovely balance of crispy and juicy 😍 haven't tried the bonesless version yet but these aren't huge wings so they're not hard to eat.

A gem of a restaurant hidden in an Asian grocer, very small dining area. Lived in glen all my life and never noticed this place till some friends told me about it recently.
They make the best crunchy fried chicken in the area! It’s the must have dish.
Excited to come back!

There's something fun about eating delicious Korean fried chicken at a no-frills friendly eatery hidden out the back of a Korean grocery store!
The fried chicken was one of the best I've had in Melbourne - with the batter being perfectly crunchy. Not too thick or oily. The spicy chilli flavour was not insanely hot and was quite nice. The soy garlic flavour was amazing.
Good ol' corn cheese was a nice addition to the meal.
The jap chae didn't taste as good as other restaurants, and the chips were average. I'd recommend sticking with the fried chicken!

by far my favourite korean chicken restaurant. the chicken is pretty small but thats what u get with wings/drummettes but still soo tasty! its pretty hidden away and is located behind a korean grocery. only bad thing i would say is how its pretty small and how theyre not opened mon/tues :(

This is one of my favourite fried chicken place to go to 😭😭 incredible and always having a good time going with my housemate to celebrate.

Love the food here - authentic Korean and down-to-earth no frills. Located at the back of a Korean grocer! My only gripe is that the seating is very limited as they are very small. Love their chicken wings and their soups.

Absolute favourite Korean fried chicken spot! Love the Aunty there, cozy atmosphere, great food and very affordable! Always craving the hot soy garlic chicken there, love it!

A Hidden korean restaurant located behind a Korean supermarket with also a back entrance which is slightly dodgy as first sight. The place sits a few people and music plays in the background. The lady serving is friendly.

Ordered half Soy garlic and sweet chilli mild for the friend chicken. Skin is so crispy with minimal oil whilst the meat is tender.

Ddeolbokki with ramen is spicy and has a generous amount of fishcake.

Overall a great place to eat.

The location of the restaurant is quite strange and hidden behind a grocery store. I had to walk through that store in able to access the restaurant. It initially presented a very dodgy vibe and the restaurant was small. However I decided to go for it and did not regret! This might be a hidden gem in Glen Waverely.

Good service and great food for the value of the money! The wings was very nicely fried and marinated. They were crunchy and addictive! The pancake consisted with a lot of kimchi (compared to many other places) which made the experience different in a good way. The stew was ok although it lacked a lot of taste and was overwhelmed by the kimchi taste. Would definitely come back for the wings anytime! Highly recommended!

I came here last night and ordered the sausage stew, corn cheese and the garlic soy chicken. The chicken here is so good and crunchy and the army stew quite nice too, it could be more flavoursome. I really enjoyed the serve yourself kimchi they provide , the kimchi here has a very strong garlic taste which I love. My stomach was a bit upset after the meal but the chicken is worth going back for

When i come here, I always order their tteokbokki & regular wings fried chicken. The chicken was delicious!crispy on the outside tender on the inside. However the tteokbokki is such a dissapointment. Lack of season and flavour. And theres no fish cake on it anymore. In the past, they made it better then the current one.overall, the food was okay.the place is quite small and no staffs. Only the owner who served us and it takes a long time to get our food served even though the restaurant is not busy.. better improvement 🙏🏻 #BHAsFoodDiary

Lovely chicken and environment! Very affordable! Will definitely come back and try more dishes! Have a very lovely space and though small it is welcoming!

Great little hidden gem. The fried chicken is great, not too oily or dry. The kimchi stew is also pretty good. Don't judge the place by its appearance.

One of my favourite home cooked kinda feeling Korean places! Never fails to hit the mark and always appetising and satisfying. Have tried most of their dishes and they are always full of flavour and I reckon the price is very reasonable too. Although it's no longer managed by the original Meega owners, the excellent standard of KFC and dishes (like soondubu, tteokbokki, corn cheese (so good!), japchae) is still there. Small place, so small team (my suggestion is to call ahead and order take away if you can't wait) but flavour still delivers in a big way! Use to be such a hidden gem but now it's a pretty popular and known place, so make sure you come and check out what Chickilia has to offer. You won't be disappointed.

I loved this place so much! It doesn't look like much going in but it was the sweetest Korean place. I went there for dinner and the food was absolutely delicious and the service was impeccable!!

The fried chicken here is in my opinion, the best you can find out of the city. The style of chicken is different, not heavily battered but twice fried for a glass-like crispy coating. I often come here and it is very consistent. The other dishes are not really outstanding, but come for the chicken!
Dimples
Yummy crispy chicken wings. Tried the spicy soy garlic. Lightly coated. 👍🏻 Good if there no queue. Place a bit small. Not for large group gatherings.

Best Chicken you'll ever have. A bit of a wait but definitely worth it at the end. Recommend hot soy garlic and soy garlic for the chicken. 10/10
Tom
From the first bite I could tell that the owners have changed and even though they claimed that they are the same management and have the recipe as meega is a blatant lie. Even the wait for our order too 45 minutes to an hour... I used to come here for years as I have enjoyed their chicken but now the standard has dropped I'll have to look else where. Reading other people's review that they have moved to Mt Waverley I definitely need to find them as this store here does not suffice!

Chickilia's menu looks like a fast food menu. The colours and signs inside the restaurant look fast food stylee. Take away boxes are absolutely fast food in appearance, and yet Chickilia is *not fast food*. Fortunately, thanks to previous reviews I was expecting a wait, and there is one. The table next to us, it seems had called through their order ahead of time, smart move if you're wanting to get things done.

Queen's birthday Monday of the long weekend lunch. We had no-where else to be, so were happy to sit and chat. After hearing the menu, make no mistake, The Lovely Man I dine with was there for one thing, wings. So we ordered wings, two large serves in the end.

First serve was half soy, garlic and the other half hot sweet-chilli. The wait is due to everything being cooked to order, it's a little like sitting at the family table having 'mum' serve while 'dad' is out the back cooking! Water is served in take-away cups, and the tea - which tasted a bit like corn to me - was direct from the urn, though second serves were barely tepid water, no colour, no flavour, not sure what went on there.

One of my dining companions decided he was feeling more like beef so went with beef bulgogi with rice, an it was the first dish to arrive. The aroma was enticing, but I didn't taste a thing, I am confident it was as delicious as the whiffs I got from it suggested.

My selection was the bibimbap, a perfectly fried egg tops an assortment of vegetables, beef and rice. I would have happily enjoyed this on my own, but we did share.

The wings arrived on a wooden board, each flavour stacked individually. Flavour sticks every one! Faultless, the soy and garlic is what you wish the famous fast food chicken tastes like, and the hot sweet chilli is exactly that, but not so much that it blows your head off, just a hot, happy, hum.

We went back for seconds after an initial taste, that's the reason we ordered two large serves, we'd probably just do that from the outset next time.

There are some cook at the table options, there aren't however many tables. There is a friendly smile from both the woman who served us, and the man who cooked our food, there is a slight language barrier for those of us who only speak English, but that's nothing a bit of smiling and pointing can't resolve.

I initially walked right past the entry to this place, it's unexpectedly located at the back of a grocer - that is, you go through the grocery shop to get to the restaurant. Feels like a secret rendezvous! I like it.

They basically told me that they were operating the same business as previous restaurant 'Meega', which serve the best fried chicken in Melbourne from my perspective, BUT I found out that the statement they made was NOT TRUE after the first bite on the fried chicken 'Chickilia' served. Had 35mins long wait, end up portions were small, average and overpriced.

Not to be offensive but I would be more than happy to try their food even if they told me HONESTLY that they were not the same owner as previous one. It just makes me think that they were trying to attract more customers by making the wrong statement saying that they are actually serving the same chicken as Meega.

Apparently I was told that Meega has been renamed as Caveman1961, which is operated at Mount Waverley, by one of my mates who has seen my Snapchat story with the caption 'Meega is back!'

This place has some delicious wings that are moderately priced. If you order the large pack it comes with around 19 pieces for 27$. Roughly 1.42$ per wing/drumlet. Tried the soy flavour and it comes out on a wooden tray after around 24 minutes. They are crispy and have a nice taste. Not overly seasoned. One guy could probably 10 easily so you may want to have an additional side dish to suit.

The room has only a handle of tables to sit and it's in a very small back section of the korean grocery. You should book for a group or take away.

Visited this place a while ago when it was known as Meega. It has now changed owners and under the name of Chickilia. Don't be disheartened if you were a Meega lover, it is still awesome! When I come here it is literally like you are dining in a friend's house and their mum and dad have prepared a delicious and authentic at home korean feed for you all.

Understandably being a very small team I think maybe only 2-3 staff for the restaurant service is on average 30-40 minutes till food arrives but there is a sign stating so and you are aware if you have been here before. The food although not the largest in quantity is fresh, tasty and how do you say taste like a home cooked meal.
The korean fried chicken is flavoursome and unlike some other places is not too oily.I would suggest 1 large fried chicken platter shared between 4 at max if you are hungry, and 2 large or 1 large and 1 small fried chicken platter shared between 4 if you are really hungry along with some other shared dishes like the cheesy noodles to accompany your main dish.

Had a quick lunch with a friend and turns out to be a looong wait for a bowl of cold noodles, 10 small pieces of fried chicken wings $12 and mung bean pancake $15. Portions were very small and expensive. The fried chicken wasn't great and bill turns out $45 for two. The cold noodles was a rip off, no meat with just a half boiled egg and topped with cucumber for $15.

Honey soy chicken with kimchi.
If you come here pretty much just get the chicken. Probably one of the best chicken wings you can get at a good price. So easy to eat, crispy sweet skin that really sets it apart from other restaurants, although there are new owners and from what i have heard, not quite as good as the originals. Still give it a shot.
Back alley entrance that will make you question if they are really just selling chicken.

This place is a hidden gem, tucked away at the back of a korean store; so the decor if any, is no more than a store-room (4 small tables, sitting 16max) but food is a delight! Tasty korean fried chicken is (what they are known for as the name suggests) what you'll get! The other selective dishes are done well. Happy to come back or recommend to call for take away korean fried chicken :)

We were told in advance prior to ordering that the wait time would be 40 minutes so we were mentally prepared to wait. We were the last table to be seated and we didn't mind waiting as the chicken would be fresh, juicy, hot and crispy.
Oh boy did it tick all the boxes. The chicken was so succulent and juicy on the inside, yet the batter was so crispy on the outside. The chicken was cooked perfectly with no hint of pink (undercooked chicken is absolutely disgusting).
So we ordered the beef japchae and that was good too, on point. Although, it would be better if there was a bit more beef. Still, very tasty and very traditional.
Chicken flavours we got were the honey mustard and the sweet chilli. I've gotta try the garlic soy next time. Smelling and seeing it on the next table.. I had chicken envy to be honest.
Cost: $30/2
DO: The fried chicken. Nothing else but the fried chicken. Soy Garlic and Mild Spicy are my two favorites.

DON'T: Order the hot and spicy unless you can really really tolerate it. It's pretty chilli.

TIP: Blink and you'll miss it. Park your car close by in the main car par park and walk to the front of the grocery store. Then proceed to walk all the way through the shop, since this chicken shop is situated out the back.

Chickilia can be found either through the back of the Asian Grocery & Gifts Shop on Springvale Road, or from down Glenway Arcade. The interior is small, with very limited seating.

As the place is so small, there are only a few staff, including the chef.
When you walk in, you pretty much sit anywhere and go up to the counter to place your order.

Service wasn’t the quickest, but the chicken was worth the wait. The location is a bit odd especially at night when its quite dark in the alley. However, once you know where the restaurant is, it’s not much of an issue.

Check out the review of Chickilia in the blog post below.

Sneakers – I stopped in at Chickilia on Saturday afternoon to pick us up some takeaway wings and fries. I had a regular serving of the hot soy garlic wings, and they were delicious. They were super crispy with a nice level of heat. The fries were delicious also, they were cooked really well, nice & crispy with a tasty seasoning on them. I also tried some pickled radish and a soy garlic wing. To be honest the pickled radish was kinda tasty but I probably wouldn’t get it again. The wing was great. It’s probably worth noting that Chickilia is located at the back of a small Korean supermarket, there’s no way from the street you could possibly tell that there was a small Korean wings restaurant located anywhere nearby due to lack of signage etc. We will definitely be going back.

Cassidy – I LOVED THESE WINGS. I had the soy garlic ones and I wish I had them again right now. They were so crunchy, so tasty, I’m so happy we tried this place. The chips were also really good. This is my first time trying Korean wings so I’m not sure where Chickilia are on the scale compared to other places, but to me, these are the best wings I’ve had in Melbourne so far.

Cleanliness of the restaurant - 8/10

Cleanliness of plates/cutlery/glasses – n/a

Cleanliness of the menus – 7/10

Service – 7/10

Wait time for food - long

Food overall – 9/10

Ambience - 6/10

Value for money – 7.5/10

Little gem in Glen Waverley . Easily missed out but there's a sign in front of shop and behind Korean grocery.
I had take away fried chicken , took about 25min to home but still crispy n great flavour . Really yum

Although there has been a change in management, the quality of the food here is excellent (and arguably better than before). I've always been a huge fan of the fried chicken here and the soy garlic wings are so delicious with just the right amount of crispness to the golden brown skin and so are a must-try. A few new additions to the menu are also fantastic. Been a regular here for years and will continue to return again and again

This place has been an old favourite mine for years. They've recently changed owners but the original owner have ensured their authentic soy garlic chicken flavour has been passed down. The new owners are very friendly and service is top notch and genuine. Highly recommended!
DAMMIT JANET I LOVE FOOD
This tiny bright orange place offers a variety of typical Korean fare, but the fried chicken is what you should order. I was a bit disappointed that they didn’t have any original fried chicken on the menu, but the soy garlic was quite enjoyable so it wasn’t a big deal in the end.

Although it's now runs by a new owner, the food is still very good. Soy garlic chicken wings is a must-try. The chilli fragrance from spicy stew tofu is really mouth watering, and the ginseng chicken soup is a sure comfort to the stomach in these cold days. Keep it up!

This restaurant is so nice. I know that Meega is closed, but I went here again and Chickilia was still open. They still have chickens, stews, rices and etc. And it was so delicious. The qualities of foods were perfect. I really enjoyed my meal here.

A lot of delicious foods are here including, Chicken, Stews, Rices and more. 5 out of 5 restaurant. All foods here are so good and yum! Must visit Restaurant!
