Review China Bar - Glen Waverley

imoniquee
Busy on a Friday night obviously, came at 10:15pm and no seats available. Waited around for 10 minutes and a table became available. Service good and fast. Waiter was really nice. | I put a low rate as this is a CASH ONLY restaurant but there are no signs anywhere to advertise this. Was intending to pay with my phone so didn’t bring my wallet, walked 2 blocks to find ATM’s but none had tap. Had to then walk in the opposite direction to our hotel to get my wallet to then go back to cash out and finally return to the restaurant. So tip, always carry cash 🥲 or ask - As in this a case, there was no cash only advertising.

Return visit for late supper. This restaurant open until late night which suit to our need and lifestyle. The place is neat and clean tho it depends on customer high turnover. It has clean toilet for both gender. We ordered flat noodle with egg soup and prawn dumpling, accompanied with hot chinese tea. It was nice experience. Definitely recommended.

Found this eatery in Glen Waverley which serves good roast meat. We tried their roast duck and roast pork which served with white rice were simply delicious. I don't mind going there again to try their in-house speciality food. I gave only 4 stars for my rating because I was a little annoy when the staff at this place spoke loudly among themselves which kind of affecting the nice amber. Wish they could have tone down their volume.

This is definitely the best place when you’re craving for Chinese food. They have a large menu and would really recommend the crispy pork. The place is clean and nice ambiance where the chef can be seen in the front.

Firstly this review is not about dining in, but takeout. Throughout the process of sorting out the order, the payment and working through difficulties, China Bar Glen Waverley handled everything exceptionally. Specifically Ryan was an immense help and went above and beyond to make sure everything suited our needs. The service was amazing and we were kept updated if anything arose. The food itself was great. All our guests complimented the taste. For the number of servings we ordered, the quality remained consistent. The kitchen did a great job! Would definitely recommend China Bar Glen Waverley to anyone hosting a party and looking for takeout dim sum. All in all, the service was excellent and the food was very good. Ryan was a great help and made it very smooth. Highly recommend to anyone looking for takeaway catering.

Food is amazing and comes in big portions. Customer service is very pleasant and friendly. Definitely recommend coming here for lunch and dinner.

The food was great and service so quick.

Went here after a let down at another Chinese restaurant. They had covered outdoor seating. The food arrived real fast. Unlike some other places, they actually had all dishes on the menu. We had a very satisfying meal, for a very reasonable price (and had food leftover to takeaway as well). The Hainanese chicken rice was excellent, as was the satay chicken skewers and well pretty much all the dishes.

China bar opens late so it offers an option for a late night meal, quite affordable and you can get some good choices of chinese bbq meals.

Food isn’t mind blowing but it is accessible and cheap.

During the lockdown they had specials for roast duck for 50% off which I think was amazing. The roast duck tastes really good and the portions are good.

However, don’t expect the service to be the same, waitresses are kind of rude sometimes and busy. They also don’t accept CARD payments so... gotta bring some cash !
Ordered dried wonton noodles for takeaway. Noodles taste like water (no sauce), no roasted duck as advertised, no side soup. This is not my first time having such bad experience with this China bar. Do not go to Glen Waverly China Bar!
Craig B
I think the pictures talk for themselves. $18.50 for this tiny bit of overcooked sweet & sour pork. Was all hard and overcooked. Seriously bad.

If you come to China Bar, you should know what to expect by now. It might be a quick lunch, or a late night eat, but you get a cheap and relatively satisfying meal (depending on what you order).

* Two roast on rice - what could go wrong? Very safe bet and I'm surprised at the meaty portions of duck they served up. The roast pork still had a bit of crackle to it, and was chased down with a bit of rice doused in the herbal light soy sauce.

* Wonton beef brisket noodle soup - huge portion of egg noodles in a light broth. The brisket had the hell cooked out of it so it was soft and gelatinous. The wontons were exactly like the pork and shrimp siu mai I also ordered, but in a different shape. Meaty, plump and excellent with a bit of the smokey chilli oil condiment.

When you need to find a place that opens late night in Glen Waverly, this is probably your only option.

It’s not the best compared to other asian restaurants but it works well for a late night meal.

7/10! These guys make some TERRIFIC classic dishes! ☝🏽 always been a fan of their roast duck and crispy pork 🤤 beautiful, juicy, chunky pieces of roast duck with tasty, fatty skin and great portion sizes! 👌🏽 also their char kway teow is 🔥 portions are always great! 🙌🏽 the price has crept up in recent years however still good value for money 💰 the food tastes brilliant! 😉 excluding the comparison of your higher end chinese and asian spots. GREAT FOOD, GOOD PORTIONS, CHEAP, QUICK AND CONVENIENT! 🙌🏽 can't ask for much more at 12am 😉

We ordered 3 noodle dishes for dinner. The portion is good. The quality of the food was not even average. Noodle are too salty, we have to dip them in water in order to eat it. Wontons have a weird texture and flavour. When relate our dishes to the waitress there was no reaction. Won’t recommend anyone to come here.

I tend to come to China bar under sufferance because my husband likes it and it’s open late so if we happen to be doing a late night Netflix marathon that requires sustenance but don’t want to entirely bust the diet with McDonald’s China Bar is our best bet.

Hubby always gets a chicken stir fry dish. We didn’t see it on the menu on this occasion (think they may have changed them) but they managed to customise anyway which was great. I get a seafood koay teow pretty much every time. I want to try the honey chicken but when it’s that cheap I figure the quality can’t be too sky high so stick to the safe option of noodles. They have pretty decent flavour considering how inexpensive they are.

Be careful when you order the roast meats. Today I ordered char siu and roast pork. I swear eating raw salt is less salty than the meats. Seriously, don't you guys taste test your cooking???

When I tried for the first time in china bar, it was not good
The other day i ordered duck noodle soup
And after that whenever i crave for duck i go to china bar
Vivian
Not bad in terms of this franchise . The wonton soup although has a lot of msg is quite tasty and the wonton has a good filling . Use to love the taro drink here but they got rid of it .

China bar has been everywhere since a long time, I guess it’s there for a reason. Was not surprised with the food quality, it’s just like any food court standard, the food taste plain. However good part is the late night opening, nice for people who have to stay up late and have some food on 2am.

China Bar in glen Waverley is great. Best Chinese this side of Shanghai. We just wave for the girls to come and get our orders and its all good. Mongolian beef is a fave and satay chicken skewers are delish. Try cashew chicken for something different. Been here a million times over the last 10 years or so and it never disappoints. Keep it up China bar.

Average food located on the hub of Kingsway Glen Waverley, the food and flavour lack here the service is bad they can't even speak English half of them so I don't understand what they're saying... It's not really clean inside sometimes I've noticed but the black bean is nice. Just a convenient location.
Streaky Eats
Had the BBQ pork bun and crispy roast pork and roast duck rice.

The BBQ pork bun was alright, bun was soft though slightly too mushy and may not be the best looking one, as the filling wasn't the black or red variant, taste was there nevertheless.

The crispy roast pork and roast duck rice were average for me, not getting much flavour out of the skin, fat or meat.
TimInMelb
A little on the expensive side for a buffet/ all-you-can-eat meal - but you won't regret it as you can't beat the variety here. Most of the food here is of quite ok quality. My favorites here are the Chinese yum cha dumplings, sushi, curry dishes, and of course the desserts. Mind that it can get a bit noisy and busy there.
Stephanie Papazois
Small outlet on heart of kingsway, gets busy inside due to limited seating. Standard chinese fare but pretty vast menu, so lots of options for everyone. You pick your items and order with a pen and notepad at the table and waitress confirms order at the table before putting it into the ordering system. Been here a few times and the meals come out pretty quickly. The portion sizes are decent and the meals taste fairly average, but it’s always consistent.

This is one of my daughter’s favourite restaurant if we happen to be around the area. The serve is usually quick, the service is good and the food is delicious. It can get crowded sometimes but we make sure we arrive early and can pick a good seat for my little one.

This is a staple food place for me when I get hungry after finishing late night work since it’s still open until after midnight. Food is the usual asian rice plus chicken, noodles, pork, dumplings and veggies. Food serving is big so the meals are filling. Their fried rice options are the best sellers. One order of fried rice can feed 2-3 persons and can be ordered alone since it has a number of chunks of chicken, pork or prawns depending on which you order. For the drinks, I highly recommend the taro shake with coconut milk.

I went there to have a quick lunch with my mum and my daughter. I ordered 3 lunch meals and a longan drink which is $5.40. The food is pretty good but the drink we got wasn’t a longan drink. It was a lychee drink which was a dollar cheaper. We didn’t mind that we had the wrong order but tried to explain to the staff. She gave us a strongly confirmed it’s a longan drink they use a fresh longan. We tried the fruit itself again still pretty sure it’s lychee. Growing up in the country where we grow longan and lychee for more than 30 years we know the difference!!! We didn’t want to make it a big deal just $1 different. Went up to pay got 1.5% surcharge on a saving card. Alright China bar. You’ll never see us again. Very disappointed!

So I'm starting to feel that not all China Bars are created equal. I ordered a roast duck and roast pork on rice for lunch time takeaway. I was provided with extra chilli sauce on the side and cutlery. The meats tasted a bit dry and there didn't seem to be that much meat as well. Service was slightly on the slow and cold side even though there were very few customers in the joint. Given the almost unlimited choices on Kings Way, I don't think I'll be hurrying back to China Bar anytime soon.

Came here around midnight as it was one of the only open stores in glen on this weeknight. I used to frequent china bar years ago and I must say it has improved tremendously. Although the small and tight interior hasn’t changed, the quality of the food has drastically improved. Not only has the quality become better, the prices have remained cheap and very reasonable. I ordered Peking duck with noodles for around 14$ (approx) I couldn’t even finish it!! The portion was huge and the duck was beautifully seasoned. Will be returning here when in search for a late night feed
Stephanie Collard
Pretty disappointing having a 1.5% surcharge on a savings account!! stop ripping people off I understand everyone has charges but put your prices up dont charge a illegal surcharge. we go here twice a week but tonight has changed my opinion.

Decided to eat at China Bar after the concert as there was nothing else open around our area. Ordered our food which was normal however the reason why I give a 1 star was cause they forgot my sweet and sour pork and made me wait over 40 minutes which obviously my partner had already finished. During the span of 40 minutes I had asked three different girls where my sweet and sour pork only for them to tell me “their still making your order, wait 5-10 minute” and when I asked for a refund they said the cook was already in the process of making it and just apologised.
Will never be coming back.
Spicelog
Crowded but always good. Very Fast service. Great food. Great prices well. Great range of Asian dishes to choose from. Always a go to place when I'm in that area.

If you are looking for fine dining with tiny, delicate portions of food that looks more akin to artwork then China Bar is not the place for you. Nor is this the place to come if you want your waiter to double as your shrink and BFF.

However if you are after great tasting Chinese street food at a good price, then this China Bar has it in spades.

After a long day of travel we arrived at China Bar as late night dining options were limited. The menu options available are your standard fare Cantonese/Shanghai food consisting of rice, noodle (dry, fried and soupy) and a whole host of dumplings.

We had 4 dishes and they were all great in their own right. The chicken laksa had a divine soup, it was a heavenly way to warm up on a cold stormy night. The prawn fried rice was flavoursome with generous sized prawns. The prawn dumplings were a decent size with good rice wrappings. Finally, the Shanghai dumplings were as juicy as they are supposed to be.

The dishes came out in the order of whichever was cooked first, which was fine by us as we were sharing. It meant that the food was piping hot when we got it, which I appreciate.

So if you are looking for inexpensive Chinese food, China Bar in Glen Waverley is for you.

Bad customer service. I ordered take away, I paid, waiting for the food. Asked the staff 1 simple question, the staff did not care to look at me and just said yes. I ordered Soy chicken, there was 1 obviously been hanging there for hours, color already changed, a new one next to it, the staff chop the old changed color one for me, I asked the staff about it, and the staff just ignore me. BAD BAD VERY BAD

My girlfriend and myself use this for a quick Chinese food fix, service is unbelievably quick, reasonably priced and tasty too, great for dinner on the go or just a casual night out.
Mon
Pretty good Chinese. Nice touch with the addition of actual prawns in the fried rice. Pork buns were good- very sweet and a little doughy but still yum. Cost for what you get was good and I'd definitely be back for that reason.

By far nothing grand or fancy - another cheap Chinese eat along Kings Way in Glen Waverley. That recognisable sticky table from a humble eatery. The interiors are simplistic, and the food is somewhat similar. Relatively cheap and meals come out quite quickly. A bit on the oilier side.
Willtravelforfood17
This place is great for late night supper after karaoke! Surprisingly the best dish here and the dish I always eat from here is the mee goreng. It is flavourful and cooked well. Other dishes are average.
BreAH
My favourite China Bar in Melbourne. Good prices. Quick service. Yummy and fresh food. Friendly staff. Loud and busy place but has a nice vibe.
Leanne Dando
One of my favourite lunch spots for Roast pork, Soy Sauce Chicken, Fried Rice or even their Crispy noodles. The only bad thing is, it is a hit and miss with how good the Pork is. When it is fresh, it's AMAZING! When it has been sitting there and dry, quite yuck - Overall I keep going back
Charles Singh
One of the better China bars. The food is great at a good price. Service isn't the best however the food makes up for it. Venue can get a bit cramped. Would recommend
Larry Ma
Horrible chicken rice at an expensive price. The city one makes better chicken rice than here for sure.

Just trying this out of curiosity and money wasted

Cheap chicken with no special seasoning, rice was too wet and bland, chicken soup was oily and sauces were being blended too fine... The only up side is
Nothing missing, unlike previous experience from another shop nearby. But heck this is a very bad chicken rice... $7.90 would be more appropriate
Cindy
A place to have a quick meal. It is a very normal restaurant. I like bbq pork and roasted duck on rice. Service is not good. The restaurant looks a little bit old and oiled.
Jennitals
LIT!: fast inexpensive Asian food with generous proportions. Love how they have late nights. Either a late night means we end up at maccas.. or China bar haha

NOT SO LIT: can't say food was mind blowing
Gdkf
Ate some of the yummiest fried rice at this China Bar!! Food came out fast and fresh, what one comes to expect from these restaurants. Crisp Pork was also a winner. The dumplings were average though. I wouldn't bother ordering them again.
Annie Zhou
For a late night dine in, this wasn't a bad choice! It was super packed at 10pm on Friday but service was speedy and efficient. They almost forgot my order but it was delivered quickly after I reminded them. We had the hainan chicken, crispy hainan chicken rice as well as the pork on rice. Nothing too complicated and servings massive, but good for a hearty simple feast.
Chuck
One of those quick serve quick eat places that you can rely on for good food, good service and good price. Perfect for a quick bite when you are time poor but still hungry for a sit down meal
Raymond "Gary" Nguyen
It's China Bar. Everyone probably knows by now. A Chinese restaurant that opens up quite late, so it is nice to pop in when you're really hungry late at night.
The Whippeteers
This review is for the Char Siu.....kinda rhymes hey?

What is it? "Char siu (Chinese: 叉燒; Cantonese Yale: chā sīu; literally: "fork roast") is a popular way to flavor and prepare barbecued pork in Cantonese cuisine. It is classified as a type of siu mei (燒味), Cantonese roasted meat....These shops usually display the merchandise by hanging them in the window. ." - Wikipedia.

Hasn't Glen Waverley changed? Back in the day......way back......hanging ducks and pork in the front windows was UNHEARD OF. Now it is common, and welcome!

But!?!?!?!?! Previous char siu from here has been superb. Yesterday's was not. Around 33% of it was FAT! Unusable. Inedible. Left The Whippeteers feeling......RIPPPED OFF!

Had been a regular customer of China Bar over the years but most disappointed with recent experience. Brought overseas guests to Glen Waverley and spent $100 for dinner for 4 persons. We ordered a pot of Chinese tea and was served with one tea cup. We requested for one more tea cup but was charged additional $1 WITHOUT any addition of tea bag or water to the tea pot. Then I asked for another cup and the girl said I have to pay another $1 arguing China Bar is charging tea on per head basis. I asked if this is so, why no additional tea bag or water added to teapot to account for consumption of an additional head. It ended up my guests had to share one tea cup with his wife because we felt in principle not fair to be charged $1 more. Ridiculous money-oriented service and embarrassing with my overseas guests. I now decided to skip China Bar.

Great for a late night meal where usual fast food won't cut it.
While the manager has a constantly bad attitude from the countless times I've been here, the staff are quite nice especially given how busy it is.

I love the chicken and mushroom fried rice and the haianese chicken, with the sauces that come a long with it. I always get the sauces on the side no matter what dish I have.
T
The only reason I go here is when there is nothing else (to be honest)! It is always open and the food isn't always terrible. Dumplings were good that I had here 2 weeks ago! But.... Lemon chicken I had the other week was awful!! So up and down tbh.
Pjayasinhe
Got a severe attack of gastro after having fried noodles with sea food. Other than for 2 prawns everything else was pork and chicken. Suspect it was from the chilli oil. 3 days after still suffering. It was past midnight when I ordered the food and had to pay a surcharge as well. Strangely the waitress wanted me to pay the money before the order was done. Not seen that anywhere before other than taxis and filling stations after a certain time of the night. Will never go there again.
FoodforThought
China bar serves surprisingly good roast duck and pork. There was a generous serving of meat (and noodles - although you can't tell from the photo because there was just too much meat!) and the flavour was just right.
CCC
Always a quick but delicious and fresh meal here. The parking can be difficult but well worth the trouble. Staff are also friendly, and the meals are extremely well priced. We paid a 10% surcharge last night though due to it being late, which I suppose is understandable but it would have been nice to be forewarned.
Dave Stroud
Great food, never disappointed after walking away from this place. Good assortment of different Asian foods and of a really high standard. Have recommended this place to many friends!
Nay Nay
I use to eat here before there was so many Asian food options! Great in terms of pricing the food is quite average and its very mainstream if anything!

5% Card Surcharge? No ty. Ill go somewhere that pays tax.

Dont support businesses that dont support Australia.

Real rip off.

Even with 50$+ bill they have a surcharge!

Edited from below: they got rid of a lot of menu items - especially the amazing Satay Beef Sizzling plate. very disappointed. Tried the Beef Hor Fun the other week. nice but not outstanding. Green tea Mango Smoothie is luckily still so good.
--------
China Bar at Glen never fails. Satay sizzling plate is always a go to or Singapore Noodles. Tried the Beef Black Bean tonight which was nice. They have some yum cha dishes too like bbq pork buns and scollop dumps. Order a Green Tea Mango smoothie when there. Will not disappoint!
Dolly The Explorer
China Bar is always a winner! Although the food has gone down hill lately, whenever we feel like quick Chinese we end up here. Food is super quick and usually very tasty. Yum!!!!
Donna Braden
A cramped restaurant that offer a range of dishes that come out quick. The staff are kept busy and a simple raise of your hand gets their attention. The food is pretty average but the best thing is the take away crispy pork or char siu - a little over priced but yum.
Givan Kulasinghe
Absolutely pathetic service. Waiting staff rude all the time and doesn't really care as they are always busy. Even the chef showed my grandma the finger while cooking fried rice.
JustASlice
I really like China Bar. They've had a few menu changes over the years but always seem to deliver nice food.

If you like dumplings, they've got a good variety. The fried shanghai dumplings, sumai, steamed pork buns and steamed pork and prawn are winners in my book.

Haianese chicken rice, special fried, chicken laksa and chicken curry are all very tasty as well (the only gripe I have is that I am yet to get some succulent breast pieces in my curry- always legs and drumsticks).
There is an array of interesting iced drinks/smoothies on the menu (and displayed along the wall of the restaurant. I haven't yet been game enough to find out what the combination of a lychee or avocado smoothie mixed with spicy chicken curry would be an I don't think I really want to but, again, the smoothies are especially popular!

If you're looking for a quiet spot, I'd go elsewhere, this place is loud, smokey at times and tables turnover pretty fast.

A great spot for a bite before/after a movie at Century City or a casual Sunday dinner.

Try it.

J.a.s. x

Take away volume is only half compared to others, still charges $11.80, will never go again.

Now despite what seems to be a common trend oft he reviews, this is actually one of my favourite places to eat in Glen. I always get the Nasi Goreng (highly recommend) which is amazing, a few of my friends also have said that they enjoy eating here. The prices have gone up the last few years though, used to be about $9.50 for a dish now it's closer to $13/$14 which is still not overly expensive. But that's just my 2c take it as you will.
Heidi
This is a good place to stop in for s quick bite before going to the movies. I had the fried flat noddles with sliced beef. It's nothing special, but the food is still reasonable and quite cheap.
"JT" Jeffrie Trika
The main issue with Chinabar is consistency, unlike McDonalds they controls everything, hence it tasted the same anywhere you go.

Each Chinabar shop Chef determines the taste of those dishes.

At the end, it's a cheap quite good fast food, this shop is not the worse of them all.
Atieh Sangtarash
The food is midrange, service is not good. My friend and I sat outside and the waitress saw us but ignored a couple of times, they bring the food so fast, as its all ready, it was very oily and the portion is big.
MF
We usually eat the omellete with rice which is nice, and sometimes also ordered chicken and mushroom fried rice.
food here aren't special nor authentic but its okay for fast lunch meal.
Signor-Gastronomico
Good food, not too expensive, fast and tasty, I like their Seafood and rice dishes, wontons are also nice. Staff are attentive. Vast menu though, and as I'm not well versed in this cuisine and I'm never sure which dishes to get next! Nice place to come with friends.

UPDATE: we tried recently their seafood Char kway teow, which was really nice. Also I tried their lemon chicken. Very crispy and well cooked chicken, however the lemon sauce was overpowering. (As I'd never tried it before) but I think I got used to it. The accompanying rice was really good. I would get these two dishes again. A good late night meal.
Sachin Krishnan
Tried the crispy hainan chicken and rice. Nice plate with chicken soup, bowl of egg rice, and a nice leg and thigh piece of crispy chicken and some salad on side. The chicken was perfect moist inside and crispy outside the sauce was delicious a bit sweet would have loved a bit more heat. The rice was a nice combination sticky and fluffy. The sauce on side was good as well. All in all a good Chinese quick service.
Mysteriousguy
Shit service and food is too hot. And their soup taste like water. WATER.
Melbourne Foodie Lover
food was good, its good if u have a few friends so that you can do a tapas style dinner and share everything, food quality is good and service is fast will have to come back soon.....
Anita Persico
Ok, what can i say, we were craving dumplings in a hurry! The dumplings came out fresh, fast and tasted delicious. What more could you ask for? Well let me tell you. ... our Shanghai dumplings came out raw still unfortunately. Opened it up and there it was, half pink inside still. Lucky we looked before popping it in our mouth. The waitress was great though and whipped it away from us and made a fresh 'cooked thoroughly' new set. Over all, reasonably priced and fast which is what i liked. Much better being satisfied here than a place like Mc Donalds.
Gavin Southern
The place you go to when you can't think of anywhere to go. Good food, cheap, sizeable meals. The food comes out fast.
Close to the station and cinemas
Ross Lorenzo
A late night legend. Move over maccas and the colonel since China Bar opened it has been a spot to indulge our midnight cravings for years now. China bar offers a selection of Malaysian, Chinese and Singaporean dishes. Our absolute goto's are Roti Cannai Beef, Indian Mee Goreng, Roast on Rice, Hainanese Chicken Rice plus their multiple dumplings. Just like my other reviews on Chinese food its not about the venue nor the service nor the smile on anyones face... if you're looking for that go somewhere else but if you're looking for full flavored deliciousness come to china bar. They're open when you need them the most ... in the middle of the night. Perfect after the club or pub :)
Pam
The opening hours and quick service is good but they've recently reduced and limited their menu which is a shame. But it's not that bad for a quick and cheap meal fix.
On the plus side, they're always packed.
HeraldSun Reviews
Always quick to be seated, always have food out super quick and always to the same standard. It's what you expect all the time, tastes great, never better never worse, and what more do you want for the price you're paying. It's terrific!
Katis_32
Being open late is the only good thing. Staff rude and talk asian right in front of you which is kinda rude. Its the mcdonalds of asian food. Cheep n fast. You get what u pay for
Luke And Hannah
Great Chinese food opens late when you need it. Out go to dishes are salted fish fried rice, crispy fried noodles and their BBQ with rice. Free hot tea is also a plus!
Luke Spiezia
The food here is incredible. Generous portions and great prices. Very friendly staff and you can see the chefs cooking through the windows. The dining area is bright and very good to look at. When eating, you can't help but feel relaxed and happy.
Eugene Lim
One of the only places to eat late at night outside of Melbourne CBD. Great place to go when you are hungry at 1 am in the morning. The food is average, but still edible.
Brod Asakura
One of the many many China Bars dotted around Melbourne. It is what you expect from a small branch of the China Bar. Quick, cheap and with the right choice, actually not too bad. I've found the Hainanese Chicken Rice to be quite decent. Unfortunately can't say much for the rest...

Used to be the best chinese- now the worst I've ever had. My husband and I used to love this place- great food at great prices. It started to go downhill once they changed owners- has gone from our favourite chinese to the worst chinese we have ever tasted. Such a shame that it has gone up in price with food I wouldn't pay $1 for. Will never go back and are extremely disappointed

Loved our family dinner!. First time I have been to China Bar and the whole family loved it.
Great service, fabulous food and awesome prices.
Something for everyone.

Terrible service. terrible service. rude waitresses. do not go here!!!!!!!!

Worest service I had never seen before: the waitress forgot to add our order and we waited there for more than 20mins and no sorry at all; no hot water provided even I said it is for medical reason.

Curry Chicken and Rice. 3 pieces of curry chicken on the bone plus steamed rice just simple but works
URQA
Worst service I've ever had in my life along with the worst meal I have ever ate almost un edible wouldn't feed to my dog
Eunicecabarubia_12
Worst customer service ever!. Waitresses need to learn better English to get orders right. Customers should be compansated for the faults of there staff! It's disgusting how management did nothing to ensure 100% customer service was being provided. The man in charge was no help at all and did nothing about our order being mixed up and forgotten. He needs to re evaluate his customer service skills before he blames his staff for there doings. It was obvious that they haven't been given the correct training due to his incompetence. He was very rude and implied that I didn't know what I had said to the waitress because it wasn't on the order sheet. He needs to ensure if there are issues that the customer leaves happy by all means. He failed to do so and for that he needs to be reviewed on his capability to run this shop. He showed no customer service and was rude upon arrival. His shop is chaotic and there is no smooth system in place to limit mistakes. This was evident by three incorrect requests we had made. Worst customer service I've received and management was disgusting.

I must have walked past so many China Bar franchises whilst in Melbourne that the name appears to be no stranger to me. I can be a fan of certain franchises such as Starbucks, McDonalds or Krispy Kreme but mainly because these brands have characteristics that lures me into their premises (now, how about that free wifi or attractive Hello Kitty toy?). And so, whilst I am not an avid fan of franchised businesses, I cannot disagree with their purpose in the community. For me, China Bar turned out to be a life saver especially when there's nothing edible in the fridge and most restaurants have shut for the day. Service is decent, do not expect a lot of attention but you will get what you need. And food arrives pretty quick at the table so your starving tummy doesn't have to wait too long. Dry noodles ~ Roast meat combination ~ roast chicken, roast pork and barbequed pork are the regulars here. Meat was a little dry but nevertheless, it did satisfy my craving and was sufficient for us at an affordable price. Plenty of meat to go around, especially for the carnivores out there. Stir-fried vegetables ~ a decent feed.

Food was not good, duck and pork very fatty and dumplings cold - had to send back.. Would never eat here again unless last place open and starving!!!

Over priced and Over it ! formerly regulars. The rice was oily and full of MSG, food quality was poor, our dish came with rice but charged us 6 dollars extra per person to make it fried rice. it would have cost us under $12 to order that as a main. service was terrible. NOT GOING BACK

I am 32 and I haven't been back to the Glen Waverley China bar since high school, came with a few friends and colleagues and my wife last night because the colleague needs a quick meal, after the experience, it reminds me exactly why I haven't been back for a good 14 years.
Service is virtually non existing, well, which isn't a major issue, I actually don't mind the system where you write your order on a piece of paper and give it to them, however we need to ask for more water on a not so busy night and time, apart from that, there is no other verbal communication with the waiter required.
Now comes the critical part, food, almost everyone on the table is dissatisfied with the food. I ordered black pepper beef with rice, well, you would thought this is full of flavour, nope! The beef was completely tasteless, it just didn't blend in to the black pepper sauce, well, I should say it did because even the sauce is quite tasteless, even an amateur chef can cook a more tasty ginger and shallot beef than that! Portion is ok though.
My friend ordered the Singaporean noodle, apparently it is too sweet, WTF? My friend can hardly eat half of it.
The other friend ordered prawn omelette on price, the omelette looks so dry and flavourless, plenty of rice but not enough sauce to bring up the flavour, it took him a while to finish (with tons of the chilli sauce they provided). The other friend ordered the combination noodle soup, his comment is also not enough flavour.
Wife's laska noodle wasn't too bad, I had a sip of the soup it was tasty.
It is strange to find such big quality difference under the same banner, while China bar buffet has such excellent food and service, its noodle and rice bar francise is lacking the quality and standard and probably consistency (maybe other ones are better? I don't know) and honestly the price is not that cheap compare to other better quality Chinese cafe style restaurants.
I don't think I will come back again, nor the other China bar noodle bar francise, look I think it must doing some right so it can have so many francises but for me, but with that sort of food quality, just not worth it.

Needs improving.. Ordered an entrée each (springs rolls), main dish each plus bowl of steamed rice to come with one of the mains (curry). The first item ready was the steamed rice - it was taken back as other food not ready. Then my main (sweet n sour chicken with steamed rice) arrived along with the other bowl of steamed rice. A couple of minutes passed and the curry was bought out. Half way through our meal and the spring rolls arrive. They need to understand an acceptable order in which to bring food out. Also, I was not happy to watch the cooks handle food with bare hands - I only hope they are regularly washed!

Change the attitude!. Came here regularly, quality of food was getting really better. However, after last night I will not come back. Me and my boyfriend waited patiently in the que. A man behind us pushed his way to the waitress and all of the sudden the waitress seats them before us! She was unaware who were waiting, not paying attention to the customers at all. Then she turns to us and says there are no spots left. Not the first time they are rude.

Recently they've raised the prices and killed the courtesy. Overpriced food loaded with MSG served by rude waitresses that barely understand you.
Oh and if you ever do order takeaway make sure to grab your own cutlery and serviettes because they sure as hell won't put it in the bag for you.
Gotta love china bar

No good. Service was unfriendly and food far too oily!

One of the worst chinabar branch. Have to say it has put me off chinabar totally. We ordered hokkien mee and it was the smelliest, tasteless thing ever tasted. I thought it was me, but my friend pushed the plate away at first bite. So when i asked the waitress if thats how it taste like shes like yes. Naturally, i had to order something else. She said id still have to pay for the hokkien mee and i said id still have to order something else because its inedible so the whole dish went to the bin (or got recycled). Springrolls were also oily. Chicken sweet corn soup was mediocre and the other dish we ordered, black bean chicken with rice was not bad but pointless after the bad taste of hokkien mee. Service was not there, however it was busy, but food came out real fast. Wont be back anytime soon.

Nice Laksa. I have been to this China Bar a few times and i have never had any issue with service, i may not get a smile from every staff member but if i flag them down they are happy to deal with me so i really have no idea why everyone is complaining so much. It's the kind of restaurant you go to get some nice cheap quick Chinese food, pay then get out.
I usually go for the seafood curry laksa and it is always really nice. I enjoy there dumpling options too, and although i've had better at Yum Cha in other places they are still nice dumplings. Also love the taro and coconut smoothie!

I've seen better customer service in strip joints/brothels.. I had to go to work in an hour so I decided to eat here, I must've waited for 5mins so I decided to use the bathroom but a worker went in there and occupied it, so I waited and the waitresses were doing the most pointless tasks like folding takeaway napkins, by that time, half an hour had already passed and the waitress finally came out, when I came back to my seat...MY MENU WAS ALREADY GONE! I waited for another 5mins, until I just got up and left because the waitresses seemed occupied with important stuff like refilling tea for the attractive guys a couple of seats away.

Good place for a late late night meal on the south East side of town..

What I didn't like was the quality.. Not tasty at all.. Ordered the beef flat noodles, spicy n salty fried prawns n beancurd pork roll.. Ok food.. The only highlight was the avacado n mango smoothie - delicious for $4.50!
Will go to some other place next time.

China Bar a good mixture of Asian food, they were fast with the service and the food was freshly made. I would give it an 8/10.

Good food but ok service. The food is great, it doesn't take too long and the short male manager has attitude issues and doesn't answer questions.

Sneaky pricing. We went to eat today with some friends and on front door the price for lunch was $30.00. After eating after paying the bill, I noticed that they charged me $35.00, there must be a mistake so I asked why the price was higher by $5.00 per person, the answer? "Because it is Christmas week" What sneaky SOB's I will never eat here again
