Review Wonton House - Glen Waverley

Paul Prakongsunt
My first visit at WH on Kingsway and I am satisfied. My initial impression is their service like “wow everyone here is nice and accommodating.” Food is great especially their wontons. The price is reasonable too. Overall, I would love to revisit more often and try some other menu. Highly recommended 👍

Mixed feelings about this. Visited Feb 2022 on a weekend. Normally I don't like talking about service being bad because it isn't important when it comes to these kinds of restaurants (it's not exactly fine dining), but I think it has to be said that the service was especially cold and unfriendly. Staff looked like they were run off their feet and because it was so busy, they just didn't care anymore. The food was above average. Congee not too salty and they didn't just dump msg in there to make it taste good. Ditto the Noodles. Tripe was so tender. The 油条 was like re-heated cardboard (def avoid). Ox tongue was tasty and they didn't skimp on the actual meat like some places. Overall would recommend for a tasty meal.

The food is ok. Although the lobster noodle didn't taste very nice, only got half a lobster and the meat was frozen so dry and flavourless. So wouldn't recommend that dish. The other dishes were ok. Drinks alright. Waitress did get the drink order wrong by one even though we verbally confirmed. Could have happened anywhere but was a little annoying having gone through the order a twice.

I have been exploring and trying rearaurants in Kingsway every weekend, and last Saturday I finally happened to taste the wonton from the Secret Kitchen's express company. Without a doubt, the wonton were beautifully delish. The skin was soft, the filling and the sauce was awesome. I also tried other dishes, which were lobster noodle and the seafood hor fun. I would say they tasted not bad at all, although not considered the best I've ever tried. The price was decent and the staff were neither helpful or helpless. I guess, customers who eat there are already aware with the menus and the situation, so they can set the expectation. For me, I would definetly want to come back here for the wonton.

If you are looking for authentic Hong Kong style food, this is the restaurant you should try. Such a consistent Hong Kong style food quality restaurant for decade. Since the restaurant closed in CBD, this is the only one left in Melbourne. Their wonton and congee always on high quality and exactly what's offer in Hong Kong. There are 2 huge whole prawn per wonton with little bit of pork. There are hardly ever any restaurant had such good quality. Wonton is huge and price us very reasonable too. Sampan congee is another food that also taste exactly like in Hong Kong. Server with deep fried wonton skin for crunch. Congee is very soft and with lots of authentic ingredients too. Such a joy to enjoy all these food. Worth the drive from another side of the town over an hour. Plenty of tables inside. And plenty of parking nearby. Train station is just at the corner with walking distance. Will definitely come back again if possible. Price is very reasonable with this quality of food.

Overall, good fast service for food that will fill the tummy but won't break the bank. We had their "Signature Wonton in soup" and Char Koay Teow. Al dente egg noodles swimming in hot lightly flavoured broth with nicely cooked wontons are a comfort food to many. Their version is OK except for the slightly gamey pork taste. As for their CKT, it was almost encased in egg (see pic) with palpable "wok hei" and adequate chinese sausage. Just a tad more bean sprouts and addition of pork lard bits would've improved the dish.

I got the roast duck and pickled vegetables soup noodles. I didn’t like it but I put that more towards me not liking the flavours. Partner got stir fried rice noodles with egg gravy which he liked and I really liked the Shanghai dumplings. The service was quick and the waiter and waitress were very polite.

Love the food here! Always quick and efficient and the taste is great!

The food is very average. Nothing special to remember. Lobster noodle was more for display as the lobster was hard to eat and mostly shells. Other dishes were not up to standard.

Didn’t have any issues with customer service. We were seated quite quickly even considering Covid restrictions.
We ordered a few dishes and left nothing behind.
Wontons are their signature dish, would definitely recommend them.

We were one of two tables at the time, the food took around 15-20 minutes to come out. Once food came out, one order was wrong and took another 15mins to come out. All the dishes were nothing more than average. Service was also lacking
Molly_chick
Whipped into here a few times on the way to the city and always have found service nice, food excellent and fast. Reasonably priced as well. Can't believe it only has a 2.5 rating. Enjoyed our meals each time

Came here to try the lobster noodles one lunch time and whilst the noodles were good, my lobster was not as meaty as I’d expect. In fact most of its body was rather empty which was disappointing. Wasn’t as busy as I thought it would be for a weekday lunch crowd. Popcorn chicken was alright.

I can go again☺️

On the way past the restaurant, attracted by the advertisement posted outside, ordered a drunken chicken set meal, soup head is very sweet, the chicken is also very tender, side dishes can be in a little bit of reinforcement, wonton is so so .....

Ok for quick fix. Food bit oily.
HungrySquirrel
I usually order the signature wonton noodle when I come here. Salted egg custard bun is good. So is the siew mai. Everything else is quite average.

Came here with the family based on a recommendation. Lobster noodle lived up to the hype!! Crispy chicken wings were a hit as well! Will definitely come back again.

Wonton, yumcha and Asian culinary experiences; we had high hopes coming here after a rowdy weekend and were left satisfied, however not entirely optimistic.

Service here could be a little better, with simple things such as providing bowls, plates and clearing out our table when food was finished in an orderly time. We don't blame them though as it was quite busy, however similar restaurants seem to have no issues in this department. Regardless, we ordered a sleuth of dumplings and their signature wonton soups! The wonton noodle soup was decent, just not as exquisite as we would have predicted. The dumplings too were satisfying, albeit lacking that extra mile and aroma that other places have- that traditional yumcha taste. That's not to say it wasn't bad- however when the custard buns were the overall favourite dish in an array of so many other dumplings, some concerns may be raised.

Satisfying feed nonetheless, perhaps not one of the more memorable yumcha or wonton experiences though.

Food: 3.25/5
Service: 2/5
Ambience: 3/5
Value: 2.5/5

Overall: 3/5

A decent local small restaurant serving the Hong Kong popular dishes. Friendly staff and fresh food, a lovely place for lunch or casual dine out. Kids friendly.

Great atmosphere great food loved it especially the dessert, ordered the lobster bit overcooked but it was still okay to eat, will come back again

As a wonton soup fan I had to stop by here for a signature wonton soup. A great broth! The Xo fried rice was also really nice and had some good flavour and hit of chilli

We enjoyed the savoury last night, my favourite is the congee with century egg. Service is ok.

Then we had desert, it ruined the experience! We ordered the toast with strawberry and chocolate ice cream on top. Ice cream taste divine then we noticed a yucky aftertaste on toast and strawberries. We figured it’s the black syrup (chocolate according to them it was) it tasted mouldy and expired... we told them about it and the lady tasted it herself. Their excuse poor quality brand!!! What enraged me is that they actually charged us still?!???? Half the price for the mouldy desert they served. What????

This was about the only place open, apart from waiting at China Bar, when we visited on Christmas Day. We left with a bad taste in the mouth, not just from the food, but also the experience. First, the lady, who's apparently the manager, drifted away without saying a word in the middle of taking our order - how rude! The chicken wings were undercooked - we showed her the reddish flesh. The chicken curry was watery, which she said was Hong Kong style, and was mostly bones anyway as per my son. Our Singapore fried noodles (or Fired Noodles as per the menu) were passable - you could taste the curry powder separately. Give it a miss!

3.5/5 Went out with a friend for the XO lobster noodles - the flavour was good, but don't expect a large amount given the relatively cheap price.
Cindy
Dined in today and the prices were very reasonable on the menu. I ordered the pickled vegetables and shredded duck noodle soup. The portion size was small and barely any duck in the noodle dish. A little bit disappointed with the experience but it is definitely a cheap meal for a family. For the 3 of us it cost $40.40 for 3x noodle dishes.
Sunny Days Melbourne
Wonton House is a great place for wonton noodles - served dry or with soup. Their wontons are always fresh and bouncy. I'm a fan of their egg noodles - almost always cooked to the right consistency.

This particular branch of Wonton House has a pleasant environment highlighted by old school Chinese red coloured water flasks, hanging birdcages and faux greenery which all add to the relaxed atmosphere.

Service here, as always, was quick and efficient.

I wouldn't mind moving in to this Wonton House one day.....

This place doesn’t honest to treat customer. The meal is terrible and chef doesn’t dare to comment their way of cooking. The lobster noodle stuck with a lot of glue coating and no gravy of the noodles and tasteless. We didn’t eat the lobster noodles and complain about it and still charged the price. That is why I take it away and took photo and put on review.
Valerie
Been here for many times. But today we wanted to try something different so we ordered noodles with lobster with xo sauce. Very salty. And there was hardly any meat on my lobster!! It was so disappointed...
Foodandwinefan
Visited this place with a friend from out of town, the staff were friendly and attentive and the servings were good size for price. Flavor was a little flat but nothing chili oil can’t fix! You can’t go wrong with noodle soup in winter!
Maki Eats
I come here for their tea set quite often because of the economical prices! Even though there is limited variety, it is rather cheap for what you get! I recall paying about $16++ for 3 dim sum 🥟 dishes & a drink of your choice! The dim sum is quite ordinary, nothing fantastic, but nevertheless tasty! Most options for this particular promotion are steamed dishes, so none of the fried dim sum choices. 😭 This promotion however is only available between certain times in a day. ☹️ A very good deal in my opinion!

Duck and lettuce congee. Don't be fooled by the nice menu picture showing big pieces of juicy duck. What you'll get is thingy sliced scraps of duck meat, maybe not even a quarter of what is shown in the picture. Texture and flavour were good.

Wonton noodle soup. Not sure why this is their signature dish, it is below average in serving size and flavour.
Munchk1n
Not too sure why this place has such a low rating. I’m currently chowing down some pork congee, stir fry noodles in superior sauce, Chinese donut and popcorn chicken. Everything is delicious. Service is good. Chinese donut is a bit on the oily side n not worth $3.50... but when ur having congee it’s a must! Can’t comment on other dishes but I’d happily come back n eat the same thing again !

3.5 ...3 for food, 0.5 for the fast service, love the lemon flavoured water, a small touch to details. The manager must have very good managing skill. The problem here is that the food is too common and simple here. The promotions maybe worth me coming again, however the noodle soup costing $12+ is on the higher side. Nevertheless the wantons are filled with whole sized prawns. Definately Hong Kong style cafe, a lots of varieties of food. Look out for their promotions, may be much worth it.
Flying Forward
Very casual noodle house, you should come in when you want something straight forward and homely. Wonton egg noodles, congee are the stables and being an off-shoot of Secret Kitchen, you can also find a small selection of dim sum.
The beef and black bean thick rice noodle - the flat wide rice noodle had a decent wok char, and came with a thick sauce. Nothing too exceptional or negative about it.

Has been consistently good the few times I’ve been. Will be my go to for HK authentic food in Glen Waverley.
Ordered stir fried beef with rice noodles and partner ordered Traditional Hong Kong style fried noodle in superior sauce & a side of fried squid. All dishes were on point 👌🏼 particularly love their chili oil, enhances the dish’s flavor but does not over power in spice.
They deserve to be rated better. Best of luck to them.
Hungry Panda
This place seems to have gone downhill a bit since opening. Went here recently and the food was bland and had next to no ingredients in them except for the noodles / rice themselves. I ordered the fish congee, and the broth it was cooked in wasn’t even flavoured. They just chucked in a few pieces of fish into plain congee so there was absolutely no flavour, not even ginger in it. My sister ordered the CKT where they hadn’t bothered to fry the egg through the noodles, but rather put an omelette looking thing on top, and there was nothing in it except for a few strands of vegetables and a couple of pieces of sausage. Granted, the CKT noodles had a decent flavour to it (or maybe anything would’ve tasted good next to my bland congee) but it definitely was not worth the price.

Overall, unless you’re eating their signature wonton dish (I assume it’s the one good thing there?), don’t bother unless you want to waste your money on plain fried noodles/rice with no flavour and no ingredients.

Thing I find with Chinese restaurants is during the pilot phase, they super perform and overdeliver and then over the course of time, everything slowly declines. Usually in quality and quantity of food. Service is pretty much non-existent in this category and it's accepted.

I really enjoyed the wonton soup, deep-fried squid and beef brisket noodles. These are quite stock-standard dishes and one can't really stuff them up. Given your restaurant is called Wonton House, there is an expectation it's their signature menu item. So far they've been able to sustain that. However their click bait lobster noodle was a bit of a disappointment. It was bland, tough and looked very different from the picture.

Anyway point is somethings are good, some not quite.

Under New management, services are good and waitresses are very friendly w smile!👍🏼👍🏼 love the Wonton, got 3 prawns inside each taste really like Hong Kong style! ❤️❤️ noodles in soup are great, not soggy!
Milk tea and ice lemon tea are superb! Must try!
The place seemed busy but had some space free so we waltzed in on a busy weekend. Servers seemed quite brusque and disinterested. I'm sure they were just busy and trying their best but it made for a fairly cold reception.
Food was served very quickly, but was mostly bland or cooked poorly. The prices of the dishes and quality of the food indicate that the place is run similar to a fast food franchise, with meals being reheated or prepared well in advance. Acceptable for the price, but feels quite out of place on Kingsway in Glen Waverley. Although perhaps that's the point, maybe they're trying to be the cheap and fast alternative to the increasingly up market restaurants on Kingsway these days.
Overall, acceptable food but nothing special and seems out of place. Unlikely to return.

I really hate how all the Chinese restaurants in Melbourne seem to find it hard to maintain their quality of food. This place is the same, they start off not bad and then the quality of food just declines rapidly. Their signature Wonton noodle soup, the soup is like diluted soy sauce, so bad. The prawn and pork dumpling is worse then the ones you buy frozen. Will never be back, you might as well have instant noodles, at least it's cheaper. Looking forward to their closure.
Bun's Food Diaries
Very average food. The pork buns tasted no different to the frozen ones you can get at asian supermarkets. Prawn dumplings were okay as was the chicken feet but I have certainly have had better.
The pork and century egg congee was kind of bland with very few century egg pieces, it didn't look as plentiful as it did in photo in the menu.
Didn't have too much time for dinner, so chooses this wonton house on the kingsway. We were so lucky to get the last table. The duck porridge was tasting and very fast but less duck meat. My son was happy with his wonton noodle too. Nice and quick services.
Spunk_a_rooney
Come in if u want to have the world's worst dumplings. We got click baited so badly. It said world famous wonton. Personally I feel that they were absolutely terrible. The soup was not pleasant. We also ordered the shanghai soup dumplings which were under average. Beware that it is cash only although we are living in 2017. The only okay thing we got was the chicken wings even though they were a bit salty but at least edible.

The Lobster noodle lunch special is a massive fail! I don't think it's a lobster that's number one, number two it's Extremely salty but the noodle is tasteless.... I would never order this again
Willtravelforfood17
I had the sampan congee and my partner had the wonton noodles - the food was OK. My partner liked the wonton noodles as he said the broth was tasty and sweet and the noodles were al dente. I liked the milk tea as it was fragrant and not too sweet.

Came here because I was craving some lobster noodles. I have been here before and ordered the lobster noodle with xo sauce and it was nice. However, this time I wanted to try the lobster noodle with string onion and garlic. I thought it was okay and personally the xo sauce one was nicer. On top of the noodles, we also ordered the fried chicken and wonton deal for 9.95. I thought that was nice too! :)
Vanessa
Ordered wan ton noodles. Very salty. Massive diarrhoea for the rest of the day. Hubby too. Will not recommend this place at all. So many options in kingsway.
Katrinabates98
Does anyone know how many BBQ pork buns you get for $7.50?? Just wondering as I want to get some but don't want to spend $7.50 for just one.

Agree with the other reviewer.. we dined at Wonton House. The restaurant serves simple hawkers style meal. The signature dishes are wonton and the like. I would recommend the seafood wonton soup. The service is fast and efficient during our visit. Overall, we think that the food is reasonably priced.

LIT!: Wonton house has a mint layout and the side dish of fried calamari was crispy and the calamari wasn't chewy. 💥⭐️

NOT SO LIT: however, the wonton soup was a bit toooo salty! The lobster was the worst dish we got. Wouldn't recommend it though i really wanted to like this place

Mu husband is Cantonese and he said the wonton noodle is pretty nice . It's good enough for me already , the wonton is filled with plenty of prawns. Reasonable price , very friendly service!

An utter dissapointment that left my mouth with an odd tingling sensation. I ordered the sweet & sour pork. The pork was heavly covered in batter and it had been over cooked so much that the pork was grey. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Wonton House is one of the newer kids (having opened mid-March) on the Kings Way strip of restaurants, replacing Dessert Story, I believe. Sometimes, I find it a bit hard to remember what used to be where!

The staff were friendly, but mostly stayed near the counter chatting amongst themselves unless they were called by one of the other diners. The overall service was slow, and the dishes were nothing too special.

Check out the review of Wonton House in the blog post below.

Can't stand the fact that they ask you order and pay first at the counter when there's hardly space for one person to walk. Is it that hard to get the person sending food to you to take your order?

Theres no space at the counter, and it's so dangerous and unhygienic with food being put on the counter where one can stand and just cough into it.

Food wise, generic like the one in city and box hill where there's a selection of congee, wonton noodles plus a small selection of dim sum.

The menu photos showed soup noodles as dry and it came of course is soup - we'll talk about confusing.

The spicy ribs set was a huge set, to my surprise, and well worth the money they charge you. Recommended for a hungry eater who just want plenty of meat and rice.

Tried one of the special mango tango drinks. Disappointed as it's just a lazy mix of ice blended cordial with some jelly in it. It felt like a half hearted attempt and imitating what is done really well at bubble tea joints.

I haven't tried their porridge but will do so. All said this is the only of two Hong Kong style joints in the glen area so I do hope it survives for variety's sake!
Notevenpicky
Yet another average spot to eat. Can't complain, can't praise. Though I have to say the very first time (grand opening) when I ate here the wonton soup bowl was a lot tastier, not sure what happened already... and would not recommend the lobster noodle either, had it last time it was oily and tasteless. Overall it's edible but would not come back since it's already going down hill from the first time I came here and it's only been a few months.

Finally, after 7+ years of the Sichuan craze in Melbourne, there is a Cantonese place being opened (migrated) in Glen Waverley. So sick of chilli and oil...

This wonton house has the same menu as the one in the city. The wonton remains tasty, with lots of pork and prawn fillings. The broth is clean, clear, smooth, and goes well with the noodles. The chicken ribs (deep fried with chilli and salt) was excellent, freshly cooked, crispy, crunchy, and the portion has returned to 2015 size (it got smaller in 2016).

Good to see Cantonese food is still alive in Melbourne.
TellYouAsItIs
New little place that has replaced Dessert Story along the Kingsway strip. Come here if you enjoy a side of diarrhoea approx an hour after your meal. Mmmmmmmmm! Diarrrrehoeaaaaaa!
The Whippeteers
THE QUICKEST LOBSTER IN TOWN! No joke, it took no more than 5mins to cook up a lobster tail, noodles with XO sauce and plonk it down for "The Whippeteers". Dang fast!

We also had Char kway teow (CKT) and someone had a craving so we finished with Sweet/Sour pork with rice.

The CKT and pork dishes were probably the best. Especially was the pork yummy.

The XO LOBSTER tail was a bit tasteless......also couldn't taste much XO.

Service: minimal

Venue: they've tried A LITTLE to give it a few nice touches, but it doesn't really come over as anything more than an OK CHEAP EAT.

Ps in case you're wondering where the Taiwanese dessert place has gone, Wonton House has now replaced it!
Cookielessvee
Ordered the crispy fried noodles and wonton noodle soup. Fast service and food comes out quick. Nice, lively interior and music. Crispy noodle has a generous amount of topping, flavoursome and the sauce is drenched in the noodles just right. Wonton soup is alright, has a strong bokchoi soup taste to it. The lychee drink is sweet and tastes like it came just right of the can.
The Foodie's Wife
As a family, we ordered the beef combo noodles, lobster noodles, wonton noodles and the wonton soup. I have to say the prices are very reasonable, the wontons were yummy, the lobster was okay (considering the price!). Overall, a pleasant meal and we are likely to return. Too bad they don't have enough bowls though, as the waitresses were very eager to remove them from the table as soon as we were done (ok, maybe they are just overly efficient, haha!)
David
We had the Samoan Congee and the Lobster Noodles in XO sauce (which was a limited time offer). The price was reasonable and the food was enjoyable. The Sampan Congee looked a bit plain, but had peanuts, sliced duck pieces, jellyfish, fishcake, squid, and spring onion which was just filling. The lobster noodles had a really great taste but a bit hard to eat.

The decoration looks really good and it was nice that they put effort into having lemon infused in their water, instead of just plain tap water.

Overall definitely a nice addition to the other dinner places available in Kingsway and worth a try.
