Review Pho 97 - Glen Waverley

Eelaine Wong
Been a couple of times now. It's just what Glen Waverley needs, a Viet eatery! Tasty comfort food. Grabbed a good lunch special today: honey pork viet roll and a strong iced coffee. The broken rice dish was very satisfying too. Thumbs up.

Reading the reviews I think I should perhaps update the internet on current situations: 28th Feb 2019 1) Tea - some reviews seems to make a deal out of this so... ummm whatever. Still no tea but water is provided. 2) No they've stopped bringing mains before entrees as far as I can tell. 3) Owner's son who waits is rude/lost. We got the wrong order and we were met with a "so you want me to take it back?" Like ***Duh*** ... if I didnt I wouldn't have called you over mate. 4) Entree portion sizes are for mice. 5 spring rolls vs what is it 8 at springvale? $9 Nem Nuong is 4 pcs see photo below 5) Pho - reg size - is definitely dearer than Springvale but I think its a decent size. Rent in Glenny is much dearer so I dont blame them for charging more. In summary it's OK. Flavour is good. Obviously got past the teething problems some people are complaining about but some still remain. Slightly increasing portion sizes might help.

Bloody good pho!!!! This place was previously workshop Bros. Same owners I was told. Will definitely be back for more.

Pho was delicious, especially when the rare beef is fresh and the texture is more juicy than the thinly sliced ones from Springy. The price is good for the portion and you are satisfied unless you're a big eater. The Buffalo Wings are also packed with flavour and every element on the dish is quite harmonious. Best Pho place thus far at the Glen.

The large pho was indeed large as expected. We ordered the rare beef and received the rare beef with meatball and tripe instead. It was still quite tasty. We also ordered the lemon chicken vermicelli and it was very tasty but for roughly $14 only had four bite sized pieces of meat in it. Overall I’d come here again and split the pho with a friend again.

Good service. Rare beef Pho soup is good. Space age atmosphere. Nice music!! They new, so one little thing - Vietnamese meals come with tea thermos and the Pho soups should have more on the plate. Im sure they will balance that out. Wifi would be good.

Not the best pho but still tasty... I asked for basil as there weren't any in the plate of bean sprouts (it had two leaves and we ordered two phos) and waiter said they've run out. Funny that because our spring roll, which was fresh and quite good, arrived not long after on our table with a good sprig of basil 🤔🤔🤔 I sort of understand since we came in close to last call for the kitchen but still... just wanted some basil

Delicious, freshly cooked, home style Vietnamese food. Good service and reasonably priced. The fresh salad greens and purple cabbage make a delicious addition to the Pho garnish plate!

Really tasty grilled pork rice vermicelli bowl. Pork was grilled perfectly and friendly staff.

2.5/5 to be fair. Nothing special, even a bit hard to finish and a bit pricey compared to other Vietnamese restaurants. No comeback for me.

The spicy beef noodle soup (aka bun bo hue) had pho noodles instead of the usual round rice noodles. Made the dish hard to eat. The banh cua (crab noodles) had a great flavour, fried soft-shelled crab, round rice noodles and fish cakes. It is a great dish to try if you're adventurous and want to try something different.

Really authentic and fresh soup for the standard pho and tasty chilli beef pho too. Servings were abit small for the price which was on the higher end compared to other phos I’ve had. But worth the try regardless.

The place is a casual restaurant and great for a simple meal

Ordered a tofu banh mi from here... and I came with pate in it.

If I ordered something vegetarian it obviously means I don’t want pate. Put two and two together.

I couldn’t eat my meal and simply just left.

Had a quick lunch at pho 109. I ordered the tomato rice with chicken. Loved the pickled carrot and cucumber. Rice was ok but it didn't really have much taste. The chicken was very overcooked. Some bits were burnt, hard and stringy, you could barely eat it.

Instagram @flabnbone_food

I was so excited to see a Vietnamese restaurant open up so close to home but was throughly disappointed . I ordered the soft shell crab noodles and the noodles were undercooked . The noodles itself is suppose to be chewy and is my favourite part of this dish. The soup itself was extremely salty . There wasn’t much of it either . Prices are also very high, would rather use that extra money on fuel to drive an extra 15 to Springvale

Satisfies cravings but nothing too special, especially when Springvale is a short drive away for authentic pho. Servings were quite large, and reasonably priced for the glen waverley location. the broth is quite salty and they only gave half a wedge of lemon. I did enjoy the texture of the noodles, they were a little thicker with a bite to them.

After a weekend of sheer carnage in celebration of a family members marriage, we decided the best way to heal our bodies was with a good bowl of pho. Newly opened on the 5th of May, we arrived to a very busy and bustling restaurant with nice ambience and aromas. There is a running joke in most Asian communities that the less ambient a restaurant is, the better the food and Pho 109 has great Ambience, and decent enough Pho.

Whilst you shouldn't compare nor expect Springvale, Foostcray or St Albans quality Pho in terms of authenticity and flavour, it definitely is a satisfying bowl. We ordered the Beef special, or the Pho Dac Biet. Meat portions and noodle size itself is a little smaller than most places, however the broth was quite rich in taste (albeit a little more watery than aforementioned). The flavours nonetheless definitely went down well, and satisfied some deep cravings within.

Decent enough Pho, not the best in the world but much better than in CBD. A classic demonstration of modern takes of Pho- satisfying as hell!

Food: 3.5/5
Service: 3.5/5
Ambience: 3.5/5
Value: 3.5/5

Overall: 3.5/5

IS this place still open? I just tried placing a phone order and Number is DISCONNECTED??? Why???? Best pho in Glen Waverley, terrible, just terrible
Lucky Star
Atmosphere not great. Pho was average. The fresh ingredients for the pho was questionable. The veg spring rolls were not bad. There are much better pho places around.

I ordered the bun vermicelli with lemongrass tofu and my friend ordered the com tam aka broken rice and the spicy wings.

Interior of the restaurant is nice, staff are attentive and the food was good.

The bun vermicelli was filling, the noodles and the lemongrass tofu were both cooked to the perfection. I thought that the flavour of the spring rolls had a unique twist to them, making this dish a little special.

Only thing, this dish would need is more sauce and more vegetables. But saying that, I’m sure they would refill your sauce.

Will come back to try more of their dishes someday!

Decided to try this pho place in Glen Waverley with the family one night. Pho 97 has more of a modern Vietnamese cuisine, and is slightly pricier than your traditional pho shop.

We decided to try their Bun Bo Hue, the Mini Pho, and the Pho Bo Dac Biet. The noodles were all cooked very well this time, although my friend said it was very over cooked and mushy the last time he came. The broth is cloudy as opposed to your traditional clear soup, however the flavour profile was pretty nice. My favourite would have to be the Bun Bo Hue.

We also got a 3 Colour Drink and Vietnamese Iced Coffee. The 3 Colour Drink was quite disappointing - it was extremely sweet, and the green jelly was half-frozen so it was hard to chew. However, the Iced Coffee was good - very strong coffee flavour with a nice bitterness, and not too sweet.

Location-wise, it’s pretty convenient as it’s situated in Kigsway, a central food location, and only a small walk from Glen Waverley station. They do have a 10% surcharge on public holidays which we were not notified about until we were paying for the meal.

Overall, a relatively decent place to have pho in Glen Waverley, but if you want the best I think you’d be better off getting the authentic stuff in Springvale!

I had the chicken pho. The broth tasted good! Setting felt a bit out of place in regards to decor. Food took longer to come out than expected, but overall a pleasant experience.

Came here for lunch with my partner. We contemplated the pho but decided to try the banh canh cua (crab noodle soup) and broken rice.
My partner didnt seem to like the crab noodle soup as such, leaving a third of noodles behind saying that the soup wasnt hearty flavour as it should be. He alao got it as a lunch set which included springrolls and a vietnamese iced coffee. Iced coffee was perfect balance of sweetness and aromatic coffee. The springrolls were a bit dissapointing with just two placed on a plate with not lettuce or dipping sauce. When my broken rice came out, i personally didnt like idea of soup bowl being placed on my food plate. It qas also missing the nuoc mam (dipping sauce). When i asked the waiter for fish sauce, i was given then the pure fish sauce in a bowl. Guess i cant complain too much because i got given what i asked but i thought a vietnamese establishment would know what condiments are generally served with what dish. The actual quality of dish was average, nothing stand out enough, expecially i felt like the pork chop and meatloaf lacked a lot of flavour.
Overall it wasnt bad and we may come back if we ever craved vietnamese food enough not to drive to springvale.

- Food (3.5/5)
- Service (4/5)
- Ambiance (3.5/5)

Overall the food seemed to be of decent quality with the spring rolls bring the highlight. The pho was underwhelming as it seemed to lack flavour and was quite oily. With so many other food outlets in GW and Springvale just down the road this restaurant doesn’t seem competitive. The ambiance seemed a little half baked but this might be because I associate it with the previous tenant, Workshop Bros.

To be Honestly I have never met a waitress with SO rude attitude,Bring My mum and kid To the restaurant in a Morning at 11AM,we did not even Eat,I was SO surprised that the surly waitress can be SO rude To customer, left with unpleasant words. would not Recommend this restaurant to pho lovers we rather drive 15 mins To springvale.

This place is decent if you're craving for pho or broken rice. I'm giving it 3 stars based on the overall price and food quality. The place is located in Glen Waverley and there are many good and cheap Vietnamese restaurants around the area. I just think it's not competitive enough apart from its location and the restaurant ambience.

We decided to try the place out today. We got the lemongrass pork vermicelli and the minced pork vermicelli. They came with spring rolls and salad which were presented well and tasted good. The lemongrass pork tasted better than the mince pork. A downside is that we wished they served a bigger portion of meat. We also got the spicy buffalo chicken wings which only came with 2 pieces and salad for $9 so it was expensive and passable.

Had the combination beef pho, spring rolls and spicy buffalo wings. The spring rolls and wings were great, but was a bit disappointed with the pho. My bowl was quite greasy on the outside and the soup was really oily as well. Not much substance.

Quite expensive for what you get.

Flavour, texture and ingredients are perfectly there for what you would look for in a hot bowl of pho.
Young and polite staff.
Will come back to try other food on the menu.

Had the pho. Average tasting. But the small serving size was the most frustrating part. There was very little beef slices. Small serving size that's quite expensive for what you get.

It was a Saturday morning at 11.10am and already this place was starting to fill up!
We were met by a surly waitress who probably required a mild attitude adjustment. Loved the one page menu - simple yet has all the regular suspects.
The spring rolls were meaty and well fried. The noodles were almost perfect and we loved the tasty soups - both the beef and spicy bun bo hue versions.
The background music was great. The decor was warm and attractive.
My one other gripe was the lack of satay sauce on the tables - a must for me when I have pho.
So all in all, the food was good enough for me to want to return in the near future and the negatives were all cosmetic.
P.S. - the front of house staff are super important guys. First impressions count.

It my first time trying Pho at Glen. Found out the people are nice and friendly but disappointed with the foods. I am okay with price "$13" for one medium bowl, but why there are only a few slices of beef? 🤔 Get back to Springy where it's almost the same price but double meats and noodle. Hope this comment can make any developments.

RIP Workshop Bros, will be missed but its replacement is sooo good. Yes it’s marginally more spenny than Springvale restaurants but this is Kingsway, and this is really good quality Vietnamese food. You can tell the conservative number of menu items let them focus on perfecting each one. The pork meatballs are to die for, definitely recommend ordering them.

Only one month open and yet Pho 97 seems to have bedded itself in nicely providing flavoursome Vietnamese dishes with a cool tunes and really friendly waiting staff. The one page menu has a heap of variety and also the odd special of two to help mix it up.

Tonight we started with a classic Vietnamese drink that out waiting staff admitted to growing up with. The three colour drink came with shaved ice, pandan, mung bean and red bean all swimming in a sweet coconut. Like a layered trifle in a cup with some amazing textures going on.

For entree we had the chicken and prawn spring rolls with all the trimmings, the Nem Nuong (Honey glazed pork balls) and the special prawn and pork dumplings in a chilli oil sauce. The absolute standout was the Nem Nuong which was full of flavour and juicy and was amazing wrapped up in lettuce with fresh mint. We had this dish recommended to us and so glad we tried it. I also really loved the chilli oil dumplings which had a satisfying chilli kick.

For mains we just had to try the pho and I chose the rare beef. The biggest of bowls arrived with a medium intensity of flavoured broth, shoots, basil, plus fresh chilli and lemon juice which I gladly added. I slurped this amazing dish up but it was so big I couldn’t finish it.

The lemon chicken bun bowl had amazing lemongrass flavoured chicken, vermicelli, fried shallots, fresh veggies and peanuts and the pour over sauce packed good flavour also. I only got to try a little of this as my wife took ownership of the dish and declared this her favourite. I’m sure she will be back for this dish in the future.

Our last main was a goodie also. The salt and pepper crumbled chicken ribs were Pho 97’s fried chicken option and came with fresh salad and red rice which both accompanied the pepper and
chilli coatings on the chicken nicely. Some seriously delicious chicken on this plate.

We really enjoyed the freshness and flavours of the dishes we tried tonight and the kitchen turn around time was impressive especially considering how short a time Pho 97 has been open for. Would definitely recommend.

Thanks so much for inviting us in.

Late Sep: Had a simple takeaway again as the previous experience is really good. Still love them 2nd time around.
Early Sep:We order takeaway and are pleasantly surprised, all food tasted good. Some food may be a bit saltier than my preference, but my friends and family had a wonderful dinner.

This place has all the classic Vietnamese dishes, loved the broken rice, in fact, best one I've had when compared to the others in CBD, Richmond, Springvale. Pork chop cooked over charcoal, a nice touch and different to all the other Vietnamese restaurants. Enjoyed the meal with an awesome ice coffee.

Classic Vietnamese dishes presented with a touch of class. All familiar flavours done very cleanly. Beef pho is meaty, sweet, strong on the herbs and packs a punch. The bun, beef on the skewer lacked smokiness that the charring suggested but the spring rolls were smashing. Taste to price ratio I'd go to Springvale or Richmond still but great for GWave.

This place used to be Workshop Brothers. The interior is still the same. We ordered bun bo hue and prawn and chicken spring rolls. The spring rolls were delicious and piping hot and crispy when they hit the table. They came with some lettuce leaves, mint and pickled carrots so we wrapped them up and dipped them into the sauce and they were delicious. They were $9 for 5 spring rolls which were on the pricey side though. The bun bo hue was very comforting. I have never had it before but the stock soup was well-balanced and very tasty. There was quite a lot of meat and pork trotters and ham - more than the noodles. I would have preferred more noodles than meat though. The pork trotters were really delicious and falling off the bone. It came with really spicy fresh chilli and we asked for chilli oil as well. We had to ask for tea as none had been served but the tea was good tea and fragrant. I will come back and try different dishes next time. Ps: best part is they don’t have extra credit card charges!

Worth the drive!
Tasty food (we had beef pho, broken rice and spring rolls) and killer 3 colour drink! Ratio nailed :) Good looking space!
Will be back :)
Prior to the change, when it was still 'Pho 97', I was never disappointed with their aromatic pho broth, generous serving sizes, fresh meats quality and friendly staff.

However, it looks to of changed ownership and with that, a new menu. The menu has the old favourites as well as some new Cantonese inspired dishes. The issue is none of it really stands out anymore.

The pho is definitely smaller in size, the broth was not hot enough, the beef was rough and appeared to be cheaper thin beef slices you would get for hot pot at home. The broth itself did not have the same warming aromatics as you know pho to be.
For those who need a bigger serve, you do have an option to upsize for $5 extra. However the pho is already $13.80-$14.80 (depending on you meat).

The beef combination crunchy noodles were similar to your typical Chinese takeaway noodlebox. A positive to this dish was that it wasn't overly oily.
Lovely place and nice food. I had Bun Bo Hue, 90% the same to the taste in Vietnam 👍. I will visit this restaurant again next time to try the Pho. When I was there, the aroma of the Pho was so nice and so tempting 😋

Was excited about this new pho place in glenny. We order the lunch special with springrolls and drink. The pho broth was very average got both chicken n beef. Springroll were average. vegetarian one was better than the meat springroll. The softshell crab noodles were the only stand out from the rest. The staff were friendly and music was good.

Newly opened and quickly becoming popular among the locals.. I came here to sample the vermicelli noodle with springroll. There is a selection of either lemon grass chicken/beef/pork grilled meat on stick, tofu or nem nuong (pork glazed pattie). I chose the lemongrass beef to accompany my bowl. It also came with salad and a few springroll pieces. The lemongrass beef was fantastic! For $13.9 lunch, it was refreshing and satisfying. A tiny bit higher in price compared to other vietnamese restaurants; but given the prime location, can’t complain. Service is friendly and reasonably fast. It was a full house at lunch time and my order came within 15mins.

I had a good meal with my friend here last night. Flavour in the pho was nice, and a good serving size too. The spring rolls were good, but I wish we got served more than 5. Also ordered the 3 colour drink (not photographed), which had good flavour too. Staff took a while to serve us, but other than that, overall good experience.

Finally a pho place in Glen Waverley. Menu has a good range to satisfy your cravings of all sorts. Good value for money, delicious pho and viet ice coffee. Will come back to work my way through the other items on the menu... And maybe give the 1kg pho challenge a go :D
