Review Chengdu Taste - Glen Waverley

Great value! The hot pot buffet is surprisingly good, it comes with a discounted price with the cheese tea as well. We ordered the tea at the end of the meal and it was so refreshing. Environment is very clean and comfy for a Chinese hot pot restaurant. I will definitely come back with friends and family.

Came here for the hot pot all you can eawt and was quite satisfied. Had to wait a bit for the broth but they've got a big variety of dishes to choose from. Tomato broth was quite tasty and especially the meat rolls and bean curd sheets were pretty good! Over all a good experience, will come back!

Expected a lot when walking in the restaurant cause the atmosphere is nice but I absolutely disappointed with the service and the food. Especially the food, I order steamed spare ribs and couldn't even swallow the second piece, it tasted so so so salty and stink. It was just so horrible. Never again.

With the all you can eat buffet, you can choose your single or double soup flavor. They have good variety of food and many kind of sauce. Cozy place to have lunch or dinner.

I have been here for a few times and never disappointed. They offer really tasty and traditional Sichuan food. Price is very reasonable for the size of the dish. Would recommend to everyone who loves hot and spicy food!

Parking: Bit difficult as it is situated in a place that's full of restaurants Ambience Your average neighborhood restaurant that's quite buzzing Food Pretty good if you like authentic Sichuan food. There is a generous use of Sichuan peppercorn which numbs your tongue. It's quite an acquired taste. Some people love it and for the rest it takes getting used to. Pricing Slightly on the higher side. I paid 40 dollars for a fish dish and two bowls of rice.

What started off as a great experience quickly went downhill. We went to Chengdu Taste and ordered the spring onion pancakes, steamed dumplings and fried dumplings. On a side note the spring onion pancakes were actually quite delicious and one of the best i've had. However, upon being served the pancakes and the steam dumplings first, i went straight away to get the sauces for the dumplings from the condiment table. One bite into the dumpling and it was barely warm inside and the skin of the dumpling especially the edges where they seal them off was cold. We kindly asked a female staff member over, who not only put her finger on one of the dumplings to see whether it was cold, but continued to ask us how long ago we had received the dumplings. We said only moments ago (i would say a max of 2 minutes, maybe 3 being generous), she proceeded to say she would go and ask the chef, but did not come back (please note, there was only about 3 other tables with other customers sitting down, so it was not busy at all, the staff were talking, polishing cutlery and eating). Not long after, a male waiter arrived with our fried dumplings, as soon as they were put down on the table, we noticed that almost every single dumpling on the plate was COMPLETELY burnt at the bottom. We kindly asked the male waiter over again and asked if he would be happy being served that as a customer, he didn't even given an answer, but clearly looked like he agreed. The boy let us know that the steamed dumplings which we were served first were given to us as soon as the chef has finished "steaming them", and didn't offer to remake the dumplings or even re-steam the ones we had already (which the waitress had touched). He said he would get back to us regarding the fried dumplings but never came back, walking past our table multiple times to serve other tables but didn't acknowledge or come back with a response. This was EXTREMELY disappointing and frustrating as out of many many restaurants i have eaten out at, they have always tried to rectify the situation, even if in a small way. We left, not only unhappy, with unfinished plates, no longer an appetite, but feeling like we were the ones who were to blame having not eaten the dumplings while they were hot (even though we started eating the steamed ones a couple of minutes after we were given them, as that was the only response when we kindly spoke to the staff. The girl at the counter who took our payment was friendly. But overall, a terrible experience and we most definitely won't be returning sadly.

Loved it, plenty of space, big selection of choices, a condiments bar where you can help yourself to a variety of sauces. Loved the dumplings and kids loved the fried sesame chicken , great value as well !

Other dishes was one of really salty another no taste at all, soft drink wasn't available. Really?🙄
Joey Zhang
Quite a good place for sichuan food, and prices are a bit cheaper than the most famous one. Taste was a bit too salty, and taste of spicy and peppery was great. Worth trying when want to have something spicy.

I hope that I have check all the “one star” reviews before walked in this restaurant tonight. After 30 minutes waiting we got a COLD steam fish dish which is supposed very warmed. No any sorry at all. Manager woman said 30 minutes waiting doesn’t mean waiting long enough. Then We had to give up and finished our dinner in other restaurant on the same street. very bad experience!
Frank Chen
Since we order 30 mins the food still not come, the staff forget to bring the dish to our table. when we ask her, she explained without any sorry and really didn't care about that. Super poor restaurant, we gave up and changed to another restaurant. I indeed wish to rate it 0 if the system allowed.

The taste is not authentic, many dishes are either too salty or too pile. The attitude of waiters are terrible too. All in all, really disappointed.
Supunshahika
Absolutely terrible. We ordered 3 dishes and 2 came in correctly one order was taken completely wrong and we had to sit for 30 mins and remind the staff about our dish and another 15 mins for it to come . And the manager VIVIAN oh my !!! Her customer service is absolutely horrendous

First glance of the menu, it was all labeled with red pepper chili. Yet having a couple taste of the dishes, it was not as hot as expected. The dishes are well made with chili, and multiple spices to give the tastes other than hot, means the dish is actually performing really well with only a tiny little bit of hotness.

They have a lot of indoor seating, and offer all you can eat hot pot. But also have many other dishes. We went with a large group of people and we were seated pretty quickly on a busy Saturday night. I had the vegetarian rice noodle stir fry which was tasty but very oily and the serving size was quite large. We also shared the prawn and chicken dumplings which were really juicy and had heaps of flavour.

2.0

This chinese restaurant is split into two with one side mainly for hotpot and the other for normal food.

We ordered the xiao long baos which were okay but meat wasn't tender.

Chicken and prawn dumpling skin was too thick and doughty, the meat was tough.

No sauces were on table and soy sauce came with the meal so no flexibility.

Salt and pepper calamari took a while to come out and although looked appetising was soggy and watery inside with the shallots no longer crispy.
Lina Zhao
The pork bun I ordered was not fresh at all, it was like it has been left overnight. And waitress provided no service at all, they were talking loudly right behind me.
Kelly
The service attitude is bad. This is a problem for the waitress. I don't understand why she can work here. The food is very good, but I hope that I will not see this poor waitress next time.
Michael Mickey Cheong
we came here many times and order
水煮鱼 not spicy, more chilli than fish
辣子鸡 not spicy after the first time we came and so much dry chilli leftover we felt like it was wasting food
四季豆 salty and amazing but not a pot
酸梅汤 sometimes has flavour sometimes taste like it's been diluted with water.
overall ok but bit pricy. plenty of other Sichuan in the area to choose from

More of a 2.5 I guess?

I didn't have high expectations so I wasn't super disappointed, but the food wasn't fantastic.

Portions are HUGE, so there is that. But our noodles had no flavor and got really tough when it cooled down. I didn't mind the silken tofu dish, the sauce was too strong, but I loved how the tofu was crunchy on the outside. Dumplings weren't great, just hard lumps of meat inside.

Oh you do get to make your own sauce though, but that always works against me since I tend to go overboard and use everything.
I probably wouldn't go back, nothing on the menu really called to me.

Firstly noticed the variety you get for hot pot is not very much for the price you pay and compared to other hot pot joints in Glenny. Secondly i had to ask the waiter to change the teacups and it had red stains inside that i could rub off. See photos attached...The major off put here is we found mould on the tofu puff and this is unacceptable. The scallops had quite a bit of sand and I found myself spitting it out quite a bit. I am skeptical of the cleanliness of the food at this restaurant and will not be returning and advising against eating here to my friends and family.
Flying Forward
This place does a variety of Chinese dishes and hot pot.

Xiaolong bao - not bad, a bit of soup inside, nice porky taste.
Panfried pork bun - only 4 in a serve. The skin is thicker than the smaller xlb, and not too crispy on the bottom either.
Eggplan tand mince pork - nice dish to go with rice. Not spicy, you get the acidity from the black vinegar.
The beans with mince pork is also pretty tasty with dried chilli, bits of sichuan pepper.
Had to ask quite a few times for the rice, even though the main dishes came out first.

Another buffet hotpot restaurant in Glen, We went there Mothers day, it got quick busy by the time we were leaving, It seems like you can never get any attention from these waitresses, had to ask several.times for a soup topup. Great selections of vegies and meat ect for hotpot !

Sitting down and finished the order almost 5:00pm. The hot pot was serviced at 5:10pm. The first dish was serviced at 5:15. Then we have been waiting for half an hour for the second dish. Not done yet, then waited another half an hour for the third, fourth and fifth. And another 20 mins for the rest three dishes. And they still forgot about the drinks we ordered. Some of the dishes are too oily. Not a good experience.

So I had all u can eat buffet. I am quite happy with the food because they have variety of choices. And soup base is also tasty. Variety of veggies,seafood,lamb,beef.. n mushrooms etc. I think it’s worth having food but u can only stay there for 2 hours for buffet. That’s plenty of time for me. But what I am not happy is with the service. I can understand staff must be busy sometimes. But some of them don’t even pay attention to the customer. And we ask some questions about the soup base but one of this staff is confuse and she gets angry because we don’t understand her. Overall food is alright, Service need to improve and shop setting is okay as well.
Food Food Food
Overall, the restaurant is average Chinese restaurant. All dishes were so oily, especially the stir fried glass noodles was so oily. The deep fried fish hot pot was interesting and tasted ok, just a bit oily again. The spicy Sichuan noodles was very light! Food portion was big and Food price was average for Chinese food!

No services at all. Me my wife and my mom came to the shop, after the waitress put menus on our table, they never returned. I had to go to the front door to ask for ordering twice an no one came to us. After 15mins we gave up and tried another cafe.

Even though I am not a big fan of oil food, I still love tasting different cuisines for my food journey and I do quite enjoy my experience at Chengdu. We try ‘the assorted veg in chili soup’ , ‘the pork intestine in chili oil ‘ and shanghai wonton soup. Everything is so oily but quite delicious. The fried is probably my favorite dish. I rate 4 mainly because of the excellent service from the waiter. He looks after us and elders next to us very well, good manner and caring. To sum this up, I recommend Chengdu for ‘not typical’ kind of food we should experience and their fantastic service. 👍🤔

really not worth it for the price, i would recommend not to even bother trying anything except for their signature chengdu dumplings (very different and worth a try), but even they get sickly after a few.

I came here for hotpot and service was fast, the food was delicious, the soup was a little less spicy than i would have liked however for the price it was definitely worth it. Not expensive at all, spent $25pp all up. I will definitely be going back.

Made a booking for two for hotpot, didn’t matter anyways as they were empty. Got given normal menu’s and not the hotpot menus. After ordering, ALL of the uncooked raw meat and veggies came out .. after waiting about 10mins with a table full of food we couldn’t eat just yet we were still waiting on the hot pots of soup. Once they did come they then got my soup order wrong, manager insisted they don’t serve the soup how I originally ordered it (half ox tail tomato soup and half ox tail herb or whatever) . I then told him that the waitress that served us took my “complicated order” with no problem, they discussed and then she came soon after and replaced my pot to my order.

Food portions are small for the price you pay and even if they are large the quality isn’t very good.

Midway through our meal we had to order another tray of combination lamb and beef for the hotpots, didn’t end up coming out until we had to ask, which by that time we’re already done eating so we had to takeaway.

Also as we paid at the register, one of the food prep guys were shaving the meat right behind the cashier without gloves .. which my partner and I found extremely off putting and just topped it all off.

Would definitely not recommend and absolutely would not come back again.
Food: 🌟🌟🌟
We ordered the original and spicy prawn wonton dumplings. The wontons were enjoyable however we found ourselves enjoying the broth in the original prawn wonton dish more as the chilli soup was a little too oily and salty for our tastes.

Service: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
We were served quite quickly and the staff were attentive.

Price: 🌟🌟🌟.5
Fairly well priced but would have preferred larger portion sizes for the specific dishes that we had ordered.
Happy Tomato
The ambience of this place was nice but the waiting staffs are not attentive. We were seated in an instance but that was all. We then waited more than 15 mins for the waiting staff to take our order. Despite the restaurant is not busy at all, and a waiting staffs of more than 10 workforce, they are nowhere to be seen. Terrible service. I give this place a Rotten Tomato.
Bun's Food Diaries
Dropped by for a late lunch and ordered off the lunch menu. For $10.80, the sweet and sour pour with rice was tasty and good value. My partner's beef brisket was good also, there was a hint of chilli oil in there but still good for mild eaters like me. The steamed chicken and shrimp dumplings were fresh and very yummy!

Decided to try this place on a whim when walking past. We ordered the stewed pork in Chengdu style and the prawns in golden egg yolk. The stewed pork was average in flavour and the meat was quite fatty. The salted egg yolk prawns were delicious. Salty and crispy. The only downside was that there weren't enough! Overall better than average.

Forgot about my meal, everyone had finished before I finally received it. Management not apologetic at all; overpriced for that you get. Wouldn’t recommend.

Good Chinese food with strong chengdu Sichuan spicy flavours, I love spicy food always :) very big venue busy location it's great for family gathering or groups of friends...staff was so busy but they have tried their best...price was mid range...2 people eat and drinks cost around $110 together. Will come back sometimes

Only tried one dish, the 'lemon chicken with rice' and i wasn't expecting much but I WAS IMPRESSED!!! It wasnt too salty (as is common with chinese food), the zesty lemon sauce punched enough flavour despite not DRENCHING the chicken in sauce.
And the batter... so crispy and flakey like I've never tasted before 😍. Probably my favourite part was that satiafying light crunch!
Judging by how this place can take a simple lemon chicken dish and turn it into something divine, i cant wait to try more from their menu.
A promising addition to the hustle and bustle of kingsway!

A bit overpriced for dinner takeaway. And waiting time about 35 mins with less crowded condition weekdays. taste of the food no complain so far.

Very yummy Sichuan and Guangdong dishes. Didn’t get to try hotpot but will definitely be coming again. Service was good and the restaurant had a good atmosphere during a Saturday lunchtime!

Authentic Szechuan cuisine at this restaurant. Ordered the Dan Dan noodles, spicy soup dumplings, corn soup, pan fried meat dumplings and spring onion pancakes. Service is efficient, portions are plentiful and located within brand new surroundings on Kingsway, Glen Waverley. Well worth a visit!

This place has replaced the old Papparich establishment. It caters for hot pot lovers and Chinese cuisine.

A friend and I went on Sunday lunch to try out their hot pot. The tables have individual induction hot pot cook tops. I ordered half and half mushrooms and Szechuan soup stock while my friend ordered seafood and Szechuan. The soup came with a small amount of the base ingredients that we chose and was presented in cute mini stock pots. The soup was well balanced and flavourful. Szechuan was not so hot as to burn the tastebuds in your mouth.

We ordered the seafood platter, beef and lamb platter, meatball mince platter, Chinese cabbage, pan fried pork buns and drinks. The seafood was fresh and didn't have any fishy aromas. Everything else was what you'd expect for hot pot. There were lots of items to choose from. For $2 per person you got unlimited access to the condiments bar.

Service was quick and friendly enough. People were queueing for a table. It has both cash and EFTPOS facilities. All up cost $95 for the both of us.

Only cons: the pork buns were a bit doughy and drinks were a bit watery.

I'm eager to go back for another round of hot pot and to try the Chinese cuisine, which seemed popular with others in the restaurant.

..........

Update 25/4/18: After this visit for hotpot I was severely disappointed with the service. I could not get the attention of any of the staff who were actively avoiding me despite making eye contact. I had to physically remove plates and bring them to the kitchen to make room on the table. I'd rather go to House of Delight where service is better.
